An award for you!
The Rajinikanth Award of Excellence and Bravery | |
Rajinikanth, as an actor, is known for his larger-than-life persona with exceptional confidence and charming optimism. Your efforts to bring Portsmouth to GA status indeed is a notable victory. Though the article's quality was debatable, your efforts were not. I give away this award to you too; I gave this to many exceptional editors in the past who have accomplished such hard tasks. Cheers! Pavanjandhyala (talk) 05:32, 1 October 2016 (UTC) |
- Thank you so much, Pavan! It's always an honour to receive a Rajinikanth award! Portsmouth is definitely the biggest thing I've done on here, and I'm glad that I made the choice to leave behind the obscure video games and move onto something more worthwhile. This is not the last "big article" I'm going to promote though. More to come! JAGUAR 11:58, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
A barnstar for you!

Cliff Clinkscales FA nomination
Because you spent some time helping it reach GA-class, I thought you might be interested in helping Cliff Clinkscales become a featured article. If so, please head over to the nomination and leave your comments. TempleM (talk) 23:58, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
- I will take a look at it soon, but I'll be a bit busy for the next couple of days. JAGUAR 14:24, 9 October 2016 (UTC)

Adrian Moss (basketball, born 1988) GA nomination
Hello, I recently nominated the Adrian Moss (basketball, born 1988) article for good article candidacy, and I was wondering whether you could take a look. If you have the time and interest, please go ahead and start the review. It is rather brief, so it should not take too long to check out. However, please prioritize the Cliff Clinkscales featured article nomination that I told you about before. TempleM (talk) 21:51, 12 October 2016 (UTC)
- I will take a look at Cliff Clinkscales shortly and will review Adrian Moss afterwards, I won't be long! JAGUAR 11:28, 13 October 2016 (UTC)

Please change your approach to GA reviewing
I've undone your GA promotion of Swaziland at the 2012 Summer Olympics. While you checked the article for grammar and typos, you apparently didn't check whether the sources supported the claims and whether the facts weren't simply wrong. I've listed a number of serious errors in the article which I found through a first reading of it. Please, when you do GA reviews, start with fact-checking. A well-written but incorrect or unsupported article should never be a GA. Fram (talk) 08:50, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
- I actually did spotcheck the sources on the first lot of GANs yesterday but last night I got so tired that I must have skimped on Swaziland's I think. I'll take another look at it. JAGUAR 17:42, 17 October 2016 (UTC)
British English usage
Hi Jaguar, can you create a similar template like what you did on Malaysia article {{Editnotices/Page/Malaysia}}, for Sabah {{Editnotices/Page/Sabah}} and Sarawak {{Editnotices/Page/Sarawak}} just like in the US state of California {{Editnotices/Page/California}} that using American English. - No problem, all done once again. I'm more than happy to create others if need be. I think a lot of African and Asian countries could also use the templates if they use British English too. JAGUAR 16:43, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

Eega
Eega has become a FA finally, Jaguar! I am so so happy for that. Just want to share this with you and others. :-D Pavanjandhyala (talk) 14:57, 22 October 2016 (UTC)
- Well done Pavan!! Hopefully this brings on a good winning streak of successful FAs! JAGUAR 12:14, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
- Haha, Jaguar! That cannot happen. When Eega's 1st FAC was happening, i faced a personal loss (you were self-blocked then). I lied down for nearly two months and you did review one of my GANs, Oopiri. This is the 2nd FAC of Eega. Though it is great enough to have a successful streak of FAs, it is also foolish enough to expect that to happen. You know why ;-) Pavanjandhyala (talk) 12:19, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
- I completely understand; I have more failed FACs than successful ones so I know how it feels. Just when you think things are going well the nomination could take a turn for the worst at any moment. FAs are risky but then again they are meant to showcase the best articles on Wikipedia! JAGUAR 12:27, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
- Exactly. The first FAC was like that. Five supports came quickly and i thought i would win. Then two opposes, and this tragedy. I never cared about the oppose; with proper help from that party, things would have been amended which is sure to happen considering who they were. But after the loss, i felt that i may not handle this with certain patience and dignity which it actually requires. So, i withdrew it. So, how are things going with you these days? Pavanjandhyala (talk) 12:31, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
- I'm sorry to hear that, it can be disheartening when you lost out of a FAC which you thought was going to be successful. It's happened to me twice. I'm doing OK, thank you, I have a FAC open at the moment but I'm waiting for it to close successfully so I can hurry up and nominate Portsmouth! I took out a grant with the foundation and I have to make the most out of the books they gave me, so I'm anxious to see if it will pass or not. JAGUAR 12:56, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
- I am feeling better now, and am doing well. Watching some good and bad Indian films (non-Indian too; loved Brooklyn and The Intouchables but am feeling numb after the recent Batman vs Superman film). Mostly on GAs now, though none are actually ready at the moment. All the best for your FAC, and since Corinne has copy-edited Portsmouth, I'm sure the prose shall be very better now. I am sure about that. Pavanjandhyala (talk) 13:07, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
- Batman vs Superman is meant to be terrible from what I've heard! I stay away from superhero films myself, they're not my preference. I like watching Indian films, and the other day I actually watched a North Korean film! I actually haven't watched that many English language films lately. If there are any other enjoyable/clever Telugu films I'll be glad to watch them :-D JAGUAR 13:10, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

- @Pavanjandhyala: please forgive me, I've only just seen this message!! Yes I remember seeing the film weeks ago, I really enjoyed the narrative. It was also quite impressive to balance out a romance and comedy, something I find American films fail at. I should try to watch a film all the way through in one sitting the next time, though... Portsmouth
Hello, Jaguar. This is a courtesy notice that the copy edit you requested for Portsmouth at the Guild of Copy Editors requests page is now complete. All feedback welcome! – Corinne (talk) 00:51, 23 October 2016 (UTC) |
As you can see, I copy-edited the entire article, not just the two sections you mentioned in your request (I had forgotten about your request to copy-edit just the history and culture sections). One of the last things I did was to make the punctuation after initial "In + year" phrases consistent. Most had commas, but some didn't, so I added the comma on the ones that were missing one, even though I prefer no comma. My impression is that writers of British English prefer the comma. If, by some chance, you also prefer no comma after initial "In + year" phrases, let me know and I'll remove them. (I've checked, and learned that the comma is optional – either way is all right – but it is important to be consistent, whichever style is chosen.) – Corinne (talk) 00:55, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for copyediting Portsmouth, Corinne! I'm strongly considering nominating it at FAC soon, so a fresh copyedit was needed throughout the whole article. I'm not sure if the comma after "in year" is British English or not, sometimes I find it appropriate to add one and other times I don't. I think we'll stick with the comma. I know that things are hyphenated more frequently in British English but sometimes I skip them altogether. By the way, South East England is always capitalised – as with all other English regions like North East etc. Thanks again! JAGUAR 12:17, 23 October 2016 (UTC)
Final FAC
Since you were the reviewer of Bradley Cooper for GA, I would like to inform you that it has been nominated for FA in case you want to provide a review or a source review which you usually do. No problem if you cannot.

What is "User did not have a podium finish" in GA cup?
I was just passing by the archives of GA cup held in the past. In judging criteria, I observed this sentence — User did not have a podium finish — I don't know what it means. i also see that in 2016 cup finals User:Sainsf was not awarded the first place stating the same reason, thought he scored highest number of points. Could you please explain what it means? Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 02:43, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Krishna_Chaitanya_Velaga, "user did not have podium finish" means that they did not come in at least third place. A podium usually consists of three places; third, second and first, so MPJ-DK and J Milburn were in fifth and fourth, respectively. Sainsf won the 2016 GA Cup, did he not? I don't know why his colour isn't gold. JAGUAR 20:46, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
- Yeah, that is why I am confused. I has the highest points count, but the colour was update, though the second and third were. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk • mail) 00:24, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

WikiProject Good Articles's 2016-2017 GA Cup
Greetings, all! We would like to announce the start of the 4th GA Cup, a competition that seeks to encourage the reviewing of Good article nominations! Thus far, there have been three GA Cups, which were successful in reaching our goals of significantly reducing the traditionally long queue at GAN, so we're doing it again. Currently, there are over 400 nominations listed. We hope that we can again make an impact this time. The 4th GA Cup will begin on November 1, 2016. Four rounds are currently scheduled (which will bring the competition to a close on February 28, 2017), but this may change based on participant numbers. We may take a break in December for the holidays, depending on the results of a poll of our participants taken shortly after the competition begins. The sign-up and submissions process will remain the same, as will the scoring. Sign-ups for the upcoming competition are currently open and will close on November 14, 2016. Everyone is welcome to join; new and old editors, so sign-up now! If you have any questions, take a look at the FAQ page and/or contact one of the judges. Cheers from 3family6, Figureskatingfan, Jaguar, MrWooHoo, and Zwerg Nase. We apologize for the delay in sending out this message until after the competition has started. Thank you to Krishna Chaitanya Velaga for aiding in getting this message out. To subscribe or unsubscribe to future GA Cup newsletters, please add or remove your name to our mailing list. If you are a participant, you will be on the mailing list no matter what as this is the easiest way to communicate between all participants.

Jaguar, your recent promotion of your own hook to Prep 3 was reverted by Mandarax. Since you seem unfamiliar with how DYK works, you should know that it is considered a conflict of interest for a nominator to promote their own nomination, or for the promoter to be the same person as proposed the promoted hook or approved the nomination. You also did not do the promotion correctly, which would have been a problem even had it not been your own hook.
The hook will be promoted in due course—there is currently a backlog of over 80 approved hooks, or over 10 days worth, so it may take a week or even two. Please be patient. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 19:06, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks BlueMoonset. It's been over a year since I last nominated something at DYK and I'm unfamiliar with the process. I thought the nomination was sitting there for too long and I got worried, but it's comforting to know that it will eventually reach the queue. JAGUAR 19:55, 10 November 2016 (UTC)

GA noms awaiting review
Hi Jaguar! Firstly let me start off by saying how much I think your work here means to the project; reviewing over 500 GA noms! I remember you as the reviewer who passed my GA noms of Talk:Gianluigi Buffon/GA1 and Talk:Andrea Pirlo/GA1 this past summer. I thought you did a great job with the reviews. We know how long it can take for GA noms to be reviewed, and I was randomly reading your user page and suggested "so if you want a GAN or FAC review done, just ask, I could probably make time for that". Now, I know we're all busy and everything, but I would really appreciate it if you could review some of my noms if you have some spare time :)...Like the last noms of mine you passed, these should be in top shape and shouldn't take to long to review. I and User:Messirulez will be around to make any adjustments ASAP. My noms are Roberto Baggio, Alessandro Del Piero, Paul Pogba (these three are relatively old from July/August), Sebastian Giovinco and Francesco Totti (these two are relatively new from November). Again, if you time, I would really appreciate it. Select at your leisure. Thank you!! Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 20:19, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Vaselineeeeeeee, thanks for the kind words! I'll be happy to take a few of your noms, or hopefully all of them. Bearing in mind I think I was doing that GAN sweep this summer which explains the shorter than usual reviews, but your articles were in great shape anyway so there weren't many issues to raise! I'll reserve a couple tonight and should start reviewing them in the morning. I'm just 200 more reviews away from being the most prolific reviewer on Wikipedia LOL. JAGUAR 22:14, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you for your assistance! That would be quite an achievement, best of luck! Regards, Vaselineeeeeeee★★★ 22:44, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

DYK for Burning Rangers
On 20 November 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Burning Rangers, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Burning Rangers was among the last five Sega Saturn games released in America? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Burning Rangers. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Burning Rangers), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

ysrnry.co.uk down
Something went down with Your Sinclair Rock n Roll Years and the whole site has been down for some time. Wanted to give you a heads up as it broke a lot of my links too, though it looks like the Internet Archive can fill in without gaps. GA reviews
Hi, which harvref error, had a look and didn't see it? In unrelated note, beware of the stats dump of 2015–16 Bengaluru FC season. That's a WP:NOSTATS violation, their age, where they're originally from is not relevant to the season events, it's for the players article. Check the various GA season articles at WP:Football. Stats dumps are widespread, but GA should never have them, appearances and goals are the only thing related to the season.--Threeohsix (talk) 22:21, 24 November 2016 (UTC)
- Hi, if I recall correctly I think there was a broken harvref at the very bottom of the article, but I can't remember. It's a very minor issue though and shouldn't have interfered with the review! Thanks for telling me about the WP:NOSTATS violation, I wasn't aware of that. I'll let Coderzombie know. JAGUAR 14:42, 25 November 2016 (UTC)

There will be two options for what we will do next in terms of Round 2 depending on the results of this poll.

I question your GA reviewing
Hi. There are 95 citations on Trump University. How many of those did you actually read to verify the content? You passed the article without suggesting a single change, which I also find odd. Please explain. Chris Troutman (talk) 03:46, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
- Hi. If I recall correctly I verified all of them, as I usually do. It's a well written and comprehensive article which met the GA criteria. It doesn't necessarily mean you have to write suggestions if there aren't any to make. If you question it feel free to submit it at GAR, but I'm sure it's fine. JAGUAR 19:28, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
- Passing by—verification of sources isn't in the GA criteria, though it's a nice courtesy. I would think that there are other breadth issues here, though, with a topic of such political import czar 18:43, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

Sing (Annie Lennox song)
Hello:
I happened to do a GOCE copy edit today of Gypsy (Lady Gaga song) by the primary author of Sing (Annie Lennox song). This prompted me to check out the latter article. There were a number of issues with it which, in my humble opinion, should have been dealt with before it passed as a GA - see [1]. I just wanted to remind you, for example, that unless the caption to a photo or illustration is a sentence fragment, the text requires a period after it. Regards Twofingered Typist (talk) 20:50, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- Hi. Sorry about that, I wasn't aware that a GOCE copy edit was still in progress when I took the review. I'll take another look at it just in case. JAGUAR 20:52, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
- There wasn't a GOCE in progress. As I said, I happened to look at it after I'd done Gypsy (Lady Gaga song) which was in the GOCE edit cue. I guess I'm not clear on the GA process but it seems to me, as I pointed out above, that an article with as many issues as this one had should not be given a GA designation until they are fixed. Or is that not the case? Regards. Twofingered Typist (talk) 20:45, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
N64 exclusives
Got tired before I could finish rating the rest 😉 I see some topics and get excited, but invariably whenever I delve into the details, I find that I'd be mostly writing GAs on crap games (known for either middling reviews or for lazy development). And I can't honestly defend wasting time writing those when there's so much more important stuff to do czar 17:58, 13 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Czar: I thought of that too. When I saw a new potential good topic I got excited, but then I realised that around three quarters of that list would be Solar Jetman all over again! I'm not so worried about reviews (if there's enough content), but writing a mandatory background section for each individual article wouldn't be worth it IMO. In other news, I'm working on bringing the Wipeout series to GT status, and should be done with that fairly soon depending on my off-wiki life. Next I'm planning to complete the DKC good topic. I have no ideas regarding another collaboration at the moment... JAGUAR 18:09, 13 December 2016 (UTC)

On 1 January 2017, WikiCup 2017 (the 10th Annual WikiCup) will begin. This year we are trying something a little different – monetary prizes.
For the WC2017 the prizes will be as follows (amounts are based in US$ and will be awarded in the form of an online Amazon gift certificate):
- First place – $200

- Category prizes – $25 per category (which will be limited to FA, FL, FP, GA, and DYK for 2017). Winning a category prize does not require making it to the final round.
Note: Monetary prizes are a one-year experiment for 2017 and may or may not be continued in the future. In order to be eligible to receive any of the prizes above, the competing Wikipedia account must have a valid/active email address.

Also, earlier this month I did a GA Review (Talk:Trinity War/GA1) but that was before I joined the Cup - can I add that Review to my list? Shearonink (talk) 02:22, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Shearonink: hi, sorry for the late reply – I've been a little busy off-wiki. MrWooHoo has made you a submissions page. I'm afraid that your review of Trinity War won't count as it was undertaken before you joined the cup, but given the laxity of this year's cup it's safe to say that even a couple of reviews should secure you into the next round. On your submissions page, just add the name of the article you're reviewing and a judge will mark it for points. Please let me know if you have any more questions. I'm sure they meant no harm but I noticed that one of the GA Cup participants has signed up for a Review but hasn't touched the GA subpage - Talk:Second Battle of Bapaume/GA1 - since December 12th. WikiProject British Empire
Hi. Why have you tagged Aubrey Swanepoel for this project? Are all indivduals born in South Africa in 1980s in scope for this project? Thanks. Lugnuts Precious bodily fluids 14:47, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Lugnuts: thanks for spotting that, I've just removed it. That was among the very few articles I tagged for the British Empire project for BLPs (as it begins with 'A'). I've long since set AWB to skip all biographies of living people, and anybody to do with sports too. The only people who should be included in the project's scope are those who were involved with colonial affairs and who were born in the colonies etc. Again thanks for letting me know. There shouldn't be any more sports related people! JAGUAR 14:51, 31 December 2016 (UTC)

Conventions and the British empire
Why are you labelling all kind of conventions as part of the British Empire wikiproject? I would guess those are outside the scope? What are the criteria you use? L.tak (talk) 15:06, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
- WP:BE's scope generally considers any article related to the British Empire to be a valid topic. All of the conventions I tagged had British African colonies participating in the conventions, and they were also categorised under them. If you feel like this is wrong, please let me know and I'll remove them (or you can remove them now if you like). Do you want me to skip all articles relating to conventions from now on? JAGUAR 15:10, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
- OK, I've added anything to do with "conventions" to the skip list and will remove any stray ones. I still think it's related to the scope though as the UK was a signatory to all of them... but if you think it's best, they can be removed. JAGUAR 15:15, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
- Well, the problem is: if it for every country involved it should be added to a wikiproject, then some have over 100, and that's contraproductive. We had these issues with I believe other countries in the future, that were "autotagged" and then removed, so it seems a recurring problem though... L.tak (talk) 15:19, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks, I see your point. If that was the case then hundreds of countries' projects would need to be tagged - I didn't think of that! I've added anything to with conventions and treaties to the skip list, so we won't see this problem again. JAGUAR 15:22, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks, that would work, I guess (I know nothing about automated editing) could you also revert the changes made yesterday? Tnx, and a good 2017! L.tak (talk) 09:09, 1 January 2017 (UTC)

- OK, I've added anything to do with "conventions" to the skip list and will remove any stray ones. I still think it's related to the scope though as the UK was a signatory to all of them... but if you think it's best, they can be removed. JAGUAR 15:15, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
I am curious
as to why you added a British Empire tag at Cantonment Burgwin? Almost any reason will do, but for the life of me I can not think of one. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 22:32, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
- Oops, thanks for spotting that. I removed it. No idea why it was categorised under the Thirteen Colonies! JAGUAR 11:01, 1 January 2017 (UTC)
