Juvenile heron

Re: File:Ardea sumatrana - Daintree River.jpg. This image is a juvenile, so I have removed it from the infobox. See discussion at Bird 1243. Snowman (talk) 21:08, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Commons only has two images of this large species including your new photograph, which is a welcome addition. If the article was a bit longer, your image should be shown in the article as well, but the article is only a Stub and it does not have much room for extra images. I have added a signpost template at the bottom of the Stub to commons, so that both images can be easily assessed. I have searched Flickr and Picasa Web Albums using several different search terms without finding any more Commons friendly photographs of this species so far.Snowman (talk) 08:34, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pop up blind

[edit]
Taken in a blind, the bird came to within 7.5m or so

Hi JJ, Just wondering where you purchased this from: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Pop_Up_Blind_with_Camera.jpg Cheers, --58.175.33.226 (talk) 11:58, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • From this guy. The design isn't perfect (I wish the window would open a little lower and it was lighter), but it is fairly well constructed etc. JJ Harrison (talk) 22:08, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • Cool thanks; and how effective do you find the blind is? Do you combine it with recorded bird calls? --58.175.33.226 (talk) 00:42, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
      • Very effective. Provided you set it up when the subjects don't see you, then they will come very close. Recorded bird calls are only really going to work for territorial species (some honeyeaters for example), I rarely make use of them. Some observation can often suggest good spots. Geolocating your IP address suggests you are in Canberra or Queanbeyan, if this is true, then given how dry much of the bush is, setting up near a waterhole or other source of fresh water might be your best bet for bush birds. JJ Harrison (talk) 09:57, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
        • Thanks for the advice! Few more questions: I know this will depend on many factors, but how long do you need to sit and wait in the hide before anything interesting comes along? Are we talking 30 mins, 2 hrs, 1/2 day? In terms of choosing a spot, what other things do you look for? You mention it's important for the bird not to see you set it up, so I'm guessing it would be futile to spot the bird go to where it was (before it flew off upon seeing you) and then set up there and wait? Also is it necessary to have the hide semi-"submerged" in surrounding bush or can you just have it more or less in the open? --58.175.33.226 (talk) 00:34, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
          • I meant that if you set it up whilst the birds are close, then the noise and so on will probably flush them. It probably doesn't matter for many birds if they see you put it up from some distance away. The kingfisher above would have seen me put it up from about 25 meters away. Scaring the birds off to plonk down a hide is unlikely to be a successful strategy (you'd probably have to wait longer if they come back at all), you are better off making observations, then putting it down strategically when there is a gap in the action. Some birds, like robins or kingfishers often have favorite perches, setting up at one of those when they go elsewhere is probably a reasonable bet. Flowering plants, such as Grevillias, Banksias or Hakeas are often a good bet for Honeyeaters and lorikeets. The waiting time varies hugely, the kingfisher was maybe 1.5 hours to get that shot, but I spent about 2.5 in the hide. I had to wait about an hour for File:Rhyacornis fuliginosus - Doi Inthanon.jpg, whilst other times action can occur within minutes. If you pick good spots you shouldn't have to wait too long. Linking instead of transcluding at FPC

[edit]

Hi JJ, I was wondering if you think that File:Tako to ama retouched.jpg would also require regular linking instead of transclusion. I am waiting for a translation of the text before nominating, but I don't want to cause too big a stink. The image itself is more explicit (and weirder... octopi) than the current hentai nomination, but significant in the development of the tentacle pornography genre and a notable work in and of its own right. Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:16, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • If you have to think about it, then it is probably better to link rather than include a thumbnail. It is just so people don't get surprises at work/university/... I would do so if you nominated that image. JJ Harrison (talk) 10:18, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Cas, and am happy to help try and push it to FA. Also that photo of the honeyeater is outstanding! Sabine's Sunbird talk
I've also got some OBP videos too, but I haven't uploaded them, since once encoded to ogg at reasonable visual quality they are above the commons file size limit and have stupid bit rates. I really wish we would hurry up with h264 video support, but I don't really know where to raise noise about it. I might see if I can cut shorter them at some point to make them fit. I was very pleased about the Honeyeater - I'm not sure that bit of behaviour has ever been photographed before. JJ Harrison (talk) 23:05, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Urgent etiquette question about draft dodger photograph

[edit]

Dear J.J., I wrote you a couple of days ago letting you know that I changed the caption of the draft dodger FPC to meet your conditional support requirements. This query is for something else, though. I wrote the (elderly, non-Wikipedia-savvy) creator of the photograph, Laura Jones, and she sent in a support of her own. But I am afraid she has also apparently been contacting people she knows and they have just now sent in a couple of supports. I am about to email her and tell her to stop (if she is in fact responsible for this). But I also want to keep the photo from being penalized because of the actions of an obviously excited older person who is uninformed about the rules here. Do you have any suggestions as to how I might accomplish this? If so, I'll follow them ASAP. Thanks so much. - Babel41 (talk) 07:01, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for this. I was kind about it, and she understands. Babel41 (talk) 18:55, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

FYI: Used your media file

[edit]

This is a courtesy note. One of your audio files is featured in a new commercial eBook in Apple’s iBooks store: http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/dr.-kemps-kids-love-bugs/id497852225?mt=11

I’ve contributed images to Wikipedia for over seven years now (including several POTD and Featured Images) and I designed the WikiSpecies logo. I respect your work here and the CC-BY-SA license we all labor under.

I know commercializing Wikipedia work is tricky and so I’ve taken great pains to follow your CC-BY-SA license requirements. I also plan to donate 10% of my proceeds to the Wikimedia Foundation directly. This is the very first self-published e-book created with Apple’s new tools and sold in the store.

I’ve given your file a credit line in the “Image and Video Credits” section starting at page 24 as required here: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_Creative_Commons_Attribution-ShareAlike_3.0_Unported_License

This compilation features many of the finest Wikipedia media files in their exact form and not as derivative works. See: http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Verbatim_copying_under_the_GFDL#Making_verbatim_copies_of_images

If I did alter your work -- such as cutting out an insect part or adding a video sound track -- I shared a Share Alike version of the new media in a DRM-free format and listed the web address in the credits section.

Thank you very much for uploading your work to Wikipedia and releasing it for the world to use in enriching educational formats.

Thanks for your support on the FP. I'm intrigued that you say the angle of view is "just slightly wider than any readily available rectilinear lens". I thought a rectilinear projection could only stretch to about 110° - 120° horizontally/vertically. That image is 180° diagonally (not sure what it is horizontally, probably about 170°). I didn't think there were any rectilinear wide-angle lenses that could go beyond 122° diagonal, and they have their distortions too. Even if stitching a panorama, Hugin doesn't recommend going beyond 110° for rectilinear. Perhaps something exotic on a large format camera?? Colin°Talk 16:24, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

1D IV

[edit]

Hey JJ!

Just had a look at the EXIF on a couple of your latest and was interested to see they were taken with the 1D IV - a new purchaser or a loan/hire? How are you finding the AF vs what you had on the 7D? As it happens I recently bought the 5D III and the AF is superb - massive improvement over the 5D II :) Any reason you went with the IV rather than the III? --Fir0002 04:57, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yeah, I was wondering the same thing... why the 1D IV? I guess the FPS would be pretty useful but the 7D was no slouch there either. It's funny though, as far as AF goes, yeah the Mk III is better, but I never found the older 5D's AF was that bad. I tend to use the old-school centre-AF point only to precisely focus, then re-frame and shoot, except when shooting something moving obviously. But for moving subjects, I tend to find it still gets confused by background objects (when using the full 61 AF points) and doesn't track the subject flawlessly. I've tried a couple of the preset AF modes and none of them seemed better than the other. Oh well, still happy with it. What are you shooting subject-wise these days anyway? Nothing that you're sharing with us, anyway. :-) Ðiliff «» (Talk) 14:30, 22 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Oh so you've finally upgraded Diliff? Must be loving the MP boost for your superpanos ;) Yeah look the 5D II AF was fine for relatively static objects but fell apart for moving objects. Also it was a bit slow/laggy in terms of FPS/shutter-lag which the III is a big step up. In terms of what I'm shooting, it's more or less same as before, but I just don't get the time anymore (something I'm sure you can sympathise with!). Birds in particularly have been a bit of a focus over the last few years... Was testing out the III AF on some galahs in flight the other day and was getting really good results - was using a single expanded AF point with +2 AF pt auto switching, tracking sensitive -1, and accel/deceel tracking +1. Still only really beginning to learn the AF system but looking very promising... And I have too shared some photos of late! :P --Fir0002 12:11, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • I purchased it, but second-hand in good condition. Uni has been too busy, so I'm not shooting anything, excepting monthly Pelagic trips. I was booked for one tomorrow too actually, but had to give it a miss because of exams. I've got ~7 more to go before the year is out. I think the 5DIII is the better camera for many purposes, just not what I am predominantly interested in shooting. As you mention, the FPS is pretty useful, resulting in more in focus frames and better poses (especially useful when you only get one shot at some passing bird). There are some other motivations too:
  1. It turns out 1D bodies can drive USM motor in the the super-telephotos (300 f/2.8, 500 f/4..., but not the 70-200s, 100-400...) twice as quickly as the prosumer bodies because of the bigger, higher voltage battery (source was Chuck Westfall in some interview I think). This makes for a big focus speed difference with my 500mm, which was a bit sluggish on the 7D, but is now about the same as my 7D/400mm f/5.6 was.
  2. The 1D4 can focus at f/8, so it has about 10% more reach than a 7D, and 50% more than a 5DIII, taking into account different sensor resolutions.
  3. Proper weather sealing is also very important to me. There is a lot of spray on those pelagic trips, I usually get drenched (in wet weather gear) by a wave at some point. I've already had a problem with the 7D after using it in heavy rain for 5-6 hours. It was as if the shutter button was half pressed all the time (precluding all settings adjustments or photo previewing). A hair dryer fixed it, but that is still pretty irritating when on a trip.
  • Once locked on, I think the 1DIV is a little more accurate (meaning % of in focus shots in AI Servo) than the 7D for big things, but a lot better for small things, in the viewfinder. The 1DIV locks to everything on much faster though. Because of the reach issue, if I got a 5DIII, I would use the 7D most of the time anyway. So I would have to keep the 7D, raising the effective cost of that purchase. I may pick up a 5DIII or 5DII in a few years. Given that I would have the 1D available, I don't see a real advantage to the 5DIII over the 5DII though. The 6fps or fancy autofocus aren't really needed for portraiture or landscapes. For most things I'd probably recommend a single expanded AF point. I only use the full spread of points when it is difficult to keep the subject in the viewfinder. JJ Harrison (talk) 01:46, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Interesting - would be great if you could dig up the ref for your first point, first time I'd heard of that... Makes sense though I guess... I remember you saying you got your 500mm second hand as well - where are you buying from? Ebay? --Fir0002 12:11, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • How much did the 500mm set you back? Ended up getting the "cheap" ($135) EF 50mm f/1.8 and getting a 430EX II SpeedLite ($372 + 3 years extended warranty for $59) for $566, could have went grey or second hand but needed it on the day and have some cover if anything went wrong. The 50mm and the flash did very well IMO File:Tim Storrier at the launch of Gallery 43 at the Wagga campus of the TAFE NSW Riverina Institute.jpg. Bidgee (talk) 12:30, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • I couldn't find the original source with a quick search, but here is the same thing for 1DX (which shares the 1D4 battery) vs 5DIII. This is the sort of difference I saw with the 500mm between the 1D and 7D, but no noticeable difference in racking speed with my 70-200, nor I suspect a 400mm f/5.6. Cost for 500mm was $6k, which is a lot, but the new super telephotos are so expensive that I doubt it has depreciated at all yet. I view the real cost of camera equipment as the total depreciation whilst I have it. In that sense my 7D, also used, cost $350 for 1.5 years use. I usually buy from eBay. The best strategy is to find auctions ending in the middle of the day, when everyone is at work, and snipe them at the last second, if they are inexpensive. The other tactic is to abuse the poor search. For example "70mm - 200mm" will not show up when someone puts in the usual "70-200mm". Of course, there is usually no warranty, and greater risk with such a route, but there is also no immediate depreciation on equipment. I think that a good flash is indispensable personally. I wasn't a huge fan of the 50mm f/1.8 on a crop body (had it, sold it again) - it was uncomfortably long for me, but it is the perfect length for portrait stuff you have been doing. JJ Harrison (talk) 14:25, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
        • You're not wrong on lens prices! Tim loaned his 400mm while he did the rowing, it is a great lens (even if it is heavy and large) but the cost had my jaw dropping to the floor (even second hand)! I'll no doubt have to do a few second hand purchases for lenses to replace the kit lenses. Next on the list is some wide angle and telephoto lens (around 300 to 400mm) but going to be awhile I think! Bidgee (talk) 14:43, 23 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
        • The 50mm is a great lens for what it is (dirt cheap), and Bidgee, that's a pretty nice portrait for f/1.8. It's best at f/2.2 - f/2.8 though, I find it shows a bit of coma at f/1.8 and the bokeh isn't great (although it does look pretty creamy in yours). I use the 85mm f/1.8 on my 5D and it's even better (although more expensive) wide open - unbelievably sharp and pretty faultless at f/1.8. A bit long for that sort of portrait lens on a crop body though. Ðiliff «» (Talk) 08:03, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
