I may have messed up here, not sure. I started a page on William Roy McGregor, then when checking for potential inbound links found there were several other people with a similar name. The article "William McGregor" referred to a football manager, while others were a politician, Governor of Newfoundland etc. which (my bias) seemed more important. So I moved "William McGregor" to William McGregor (football), and turned William McGregor into a disambiguation page, then into a redirect to William McGregor (disambiguation). Starting to clean up, I find that the football article is a featured article. Should it be moved back? If you think it should, please go ahead. If not, I will clean up links to the disambig. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 18:23, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- As far as I can tell, you've done everything right. There doesn't seem to be a primary topic (one person with greater notbaility than all the others combined), so William McGregor should be a dab, William McGregor (disambiguation) should redirect there (I just switched them round), and all articles listed there should have a hatnote, use:
- --Oh, and that redirect link is deliberate. It helps with fixing dab links. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:32, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks - I just didn't want a crowd of angry football fans after me! I will clean up links to the disambig. Aymatth2 (talk) 18:37, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- Cleaned up - no more links from mainspace or main portal pages. I had no idea there were so many football articles, and so much repetition in them! Happy to say five of the links should have been to the Canadian politician or the Queensland governor. Aymatth2 (talk) 19:26, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- There are few things more popular than football on Wikipedia! I wouldn't be surprised many of those are a bit of a walled garden and probably one editor's group of pet articles. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:39, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Proposed move
Hi HJ, I'm wondering you you be able to help me. I noticed you moved John Rocha (fashion designer) to "John Rocha". I propose that Victoria Square Shopping Centre (Belfast) also ought to be moved to "Victoria Square Shopping Centre". Would you be able to move this the correct way? Or if you disagree, feel free to say why. But I think stating Belfast is unnecessary since there is only on such centre. Cheers --NorthernCounties (talk) 21:04, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- It would seem to be a good idea to move it there, since the disambiguator is unnecessary. Since Victoria Square Shopping Centre doesn't currently exist, it would probably be better for you to be bold and move it. The only reason I'm hesitant to do so myself is because I don't like to give the impression that I'm acting in some sort of "official" admin capacity . HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:34, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick response. And I understand your hesitance, I've now moved the page accordingly and it can now be found at Victoria Square Shopping Centre. Cheers again, --NorthernCounties (talk) 23:24, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Take a look... but if you're gone for the night, I'm inclined to cutting this block to time served. Courcelles 00:57, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- It's 1am. I'm too tired to properly evaluate an unblock request, but I trust your judgement, so do what you think is best. I also blocked the IP they were edit warring with (last entry in my block log), just so you have all the facts. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 01:01, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- Cool. I'm going to leave the IP blocked, as their edits were promotional, just not vandalism. (I tend to be inclined to cut first-timers a break in these cases, where the revert was likely right and the editor just got a touch too enthusiastic.) Courcelles 01:11, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- You probably would have noticed anyway: I left a note of disappointment about this block at User talk:Courcelles. --Pgallert (talk) 08:59, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
If you have a moment would you please take a look at this
Hello HJ Mitchell. If you have a moment, and the inclination, would you please take a look at the thread that I started here Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Thoroughbred racing#Problematic edits. I apologize for bothering you with this but I know that you are a conscientious admin and I am bumping up against a couple of things. First, I get a sense that the Thoroughbred project has become dormant and I don't know how long it will be before someone responds to my message. Next based on the edit history and the number of deleted articles that this editor has created we seem to have (at best) a young fan who is playing around here. Lastly, I am trying to fend off the sandman and I just could not find a message board that seemed appropriate to pass this on to. Please let me know where best it would have been to express this concern and I will use it in the future. Of course if you do not want to deal with this that would not bother me at all and, again, my apologies for dumping this on you. Thank you for your time and best cheers of the season. MarnetteD | Talk 05:00, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- OK. Why don't you start by explaining what the problem is, bearing in mind that I know nothing about horses! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 15:55, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- Apologies for not being more thorough as my eyes were drooping. First off the Blood-Horse magazine List of the Top 100 U.S. Racehorses of the 20th Century definitely shows on page five [1] that they listed Man o' War number one and Secretariat number 2 so the 2nd, 3rd and 4th edits that they made on Dec 8th Special:Contributions/Zenyattathegreat introduced deliberate factual errors. A check of the earlier Dec and Nov edits shows that they all had to be reversed as POV or inaccurate info. Sadly no one took the time to warn them after reversing those edits. There last two edits yesterday were to create this article Top Racehorses In History which has no sourcing and looks to be a vanity list stating the editors opinion about this. A look at the editors talk page User_talk:Zenyattathegreat shows that they have created at least two other articles that have been deleted so they are aware of that situation. Fortunately, the new article has been tagged so it will likely be deleted a week from now. Having typed all of this I guess my main concern was that there be more eyes on this editors entries in case they continued on with their editing after I had gone to sleep and, since I could not think of another message board to leave my concerns on and knowing the time difference between us I knew that you would be back here to check things while I was still sawing logs. Thanks again for your time. MarnetteD | Talk 16:46, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- Forgive my ignorance, but is there any way that those edits could have been an honest mistake or that he thought he was correct in making them? It's not the typical kind of addition of profanity type of vandalism. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:41, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- I doubt it. All of their edits have had to be reversed and they have inaccurately changed numbers before including this one [2]. I suspect that this is a youngster who is using wikipedia as a plaything but that does just as much damage as profanity vandals. Why I think it's an attack page.
It's a page consisting of unverifiable statements about the Elizabethan period followed with insinuations of daily activities and personal information. [Quoted material removed per instructions for CSD:10]

Pending Changes
I've noticed that fewer and fewer pages with pending changes are turning up to be reviewed. I also see that no consensus was reached in the discussion about the process. It said that pages protected by it prior to the review would remain protected. What's happening with it? Is it being phased out? Are new pages being added? Are pages being removed? If the answer to the last two questions is no and yes then eventually there will be no pages carrying this protection; so what will happen then? — Fly by Night (talk) 21:18, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
- I have no idea, and I'm pretty sure nobody does. As I understand it, there was a trial and, months after the trial was supposed to be finished, there was a poll. There had to be a clear consensus in the poll to continue the use of PC, which there wasn't, but Jimbo vetoed it. Personally, I think it has i's less than ideal, but it has some uses, so I occasionally put articles on it when it's viable alternative to semi-protection. It seems to have got faster, though whether that's developer intervention, less articles on it so less strain on the server or just my imagination (or a combination of the three) I have no idea. Basically, if you can make a case for PC instead semi, I would think most admins at RfPP would at least hear you out. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:07, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
- What did Jimbo veto? The poll, or scrapping it because of lack of consensus? I agree with your earlier comments. I've searched high and low and I can't find a definitive answer. I thought it was just me being dense; but, for once, maybe not :-) — Fly by Night (talk) 15:46, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

IP account
Hi Harry. You already blocked User talk:138.162.8.58 in September. This account is used for a monumental amount of vandalism and sock puppetry, and has already accumulated more final warnings. I am gathering information on what might be a major SP (which I'll need your help on later) concerning this account and a registered user, so could you consider blocking this account again in the meantime based on the complaints alone? Cheers, --Kudpung (talk) 02:51, 11 December 2010 (UTC)

Mediation help
Hi HJ Mitchell. I've remarked your contributions to the ITN template, and I appreciate your work as administrator done there. I just want to ask you for a little mediation on the candidates page where unfortunately the user Crnorizec persistently states something without citing reliable sources, rejects reports covered by media, uses confrontational tone and apparently plays with the rules. I tolerated this and tried to improve the relations with him, which was obviously refused. Best regards.--Kiril Simeonovski (talk) 21:55, 12 December 2010 (UTC)

Questions
Dear HJ Mitchell, Let me first thank you again for clarifying this fact. I will try to learn more.
- I have two questions:
- 1- What is the correct idea in this talk page about BCE&CE vs. BC&AD ?
- 2- Is there a chance for me to be given this feature? *** in fact *** (contact) 19:34, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
- I have two questions:
- Hi. 1) Since BCE/CE is the established format in that article, you'll need to establish a consensus to change it, but you're unlikely to get it because no format is more valid than the other, so there's no reason to change it. 2) Maybe, but you'll need quite a bit of experience at reverting vandalism. Thanks for protecting this page on the 9th. The IPs from Ireland have picked back up with their insertion of unsourced info so if you could protect it again for a few days it would be appreciated. The thing that is sad is that in one of its incarnation the editor did find a source for including this style of info on a different article [4]. As ever thanks for your time. Rollback permissions for experienced user
Good evening, HJ. I recently supported the nomination of Paralympiakos at WP:RFP/R. Based on this user's experience with pages that are frequently the subject of vandalism, I suggested he apply for rollback on his talk page. The discussion of rollback permissions is on hold for your feedback. If you could add your input, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your time.--GnoworTC 06:45, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- The ball is in his court. His request was declined because he needs to take it up with me if he wants rollback again. He's quite welcome to come and discuss it with me and if he can convince me that he won't misuse it for a third time (he's had it removed twice), then I'll consider it. - Well I'm not going to protect it again because it's just come off a two-week protection and you've gone and reignited the same edit war that necessitated the protection last time. I'd suggest you knock it off and discuss it on the talk page or you'll end up blocked. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:52, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Unite Against Fascism
Hi HJ,
First of all, thanks for your attention to the page - it really needs admin oversight, and even if you are unable to focus on it, I hope another admin can. Alas, I'm not sure that asking us to discuss things amongst ourselves will be effective, as communication on this issue has basically broken down. There are two issues here, which seem to me (at least) very clear.
- One, and the easier one to deal with, is that the introduction of the contentious material has been allowed to stay, rather than the usual default BRD position of it not staying until consensus is reached.
- The second issue, which really needs admin attention (or some kind of arbitrator) is what I and other editors see as a violation of some fairly well set-out sourcing principles, namely, that labelling (first sentence descriptions) need impeccable sourcing, and that the editors on the UAF page who are inserting the material are absolutely not following this. Moreover, this appears to be a pointy edit battle inspired by their dislike of descriptions on other pages of far or radical right wing groups. (the sourcing they've suggested for the dispute at times has been genuinely farcical) I hate to get all edit-history about this, but they've a goodly collection of blocks for POV edit warring amongst themselves, while those opposing them are (myself included) reluctant to go above 1RR, let alone 3RR. If I'm going about this in the wrong way, I'd appreciate that feedback too.VsevolodKrolikov (talk) 16:41, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- I would ppoint oout that I have stated in the past (and currently) that I am against all non self applied labaling iin either intro or info boxes (and indead in articels where thier opinoons are being sourced). My objection is that if we allow labels to be applied because a majority of RS that have expressed a view have called X this then we apply that accross the board. I would also point out that 'the other side' have cherry picked sources (and then complained when its been pointed out they support the terms inclusion). Have mis-represented RSN consensus and have consistantly assuemed bad faith. Neither side (and I include my self in this) have exaclty a stearling record over this issue. I think thats the point made at ANI, both sides need to calm down.Slatersteven (talk) 17:11, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- I understand the point you're making, but, as I said at ANEW, it's not plausible to use a "block the lot of'em" approach here. Sometimes it's tempting to say you can all bugger off for a few days and sometimes it works, but I think it would only postpone the bickering and edit warring until the blocks expired. If talk page discussion is proving fruitless, then some sort of formal dispute resolution might help. You might think the dispute has got further than where third opinion would be useful (or your might think it's worth a try), or perhaps some from of mediation or an RfC? You've got a week of full protection, so it's not really urgent. You might want to explore the options over the next few days. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:35, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Process question (eventually)
Thanks for your note - I'll ask a serious question, which I hope doesn't come across too negative. There's a lot of things to think about when deleting a Prod, and I've tried to do a decent job. I check to make sure the original editor has been notified, or, if not,t hat there is an acceptable reason for not notifying. I try not to take the rationale for granted, but check to make sure (at least at a cursory level) that the article really isn't very good. I check what links here, so I can take care of other links to the article. There are some things I do not do - if the article doesn't make a reasonable assertion of notability, I don't independently look into it. That's what the notice and the week is for (I handle CSDs slightly differently).
I check to make sure there isn't a blunder on the date, for example, if the notice went out on the 14th, and it is the 14th, something is wrong. I haven't run across such an example yet. However, what I do not do is check to ensure that it has been seven days to the hour. That's what computers are for. I assume the posting isn't manual but handled by a bot or something administrative system. I don't know who is in charge of that. Do you? Because it makes no sense to ask an admin to check the time stamp, when a computer can do it. If the system is not working, it should be fixed.
I do note the message says " The following articles have been proposed for deletion for around 7 days" with "around" in bold. I don't know why it says that. One possible reason is someone figured out that the posting was sometimes too early, and didn't want to fix it, so changed the message. But the message makes no sense if our rule is that at least seven days must pass. We either need to amend the rule, or amend the process. When an article appears in the list, absent some malfunction, it should be eligible. This seems so obvious, I find it hard to imagine a disagreement, but it wouldn't be the first time I've proposed something that seemed obvious, yet some disagreed (I think editors should be notified, but I failed in my attempt to make notification mandatory.) Is there any reason why you think articles should appear in the list that are not yet eligible in terms of time?--SPhilbrickT 19:44, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- I believe User:Cydebot creates that list at midnight UTC. It's intended as a list of all PRODS expiring today (meaning they could have anything from a few seconds to 23 hours and 59 minutes left) rather than a list of expired PRODs. WP:PRODSUM has a chronological list of PRODs with the time of their expiry and there's Category:Expired proposed deletions, though that requires constant checking, so it's kind of a case of whichever annoyance you're willing to put up with. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:02, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Dojarca at AE
I strongly disagree with your comment at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement#Result of the appeal by Dojarca. Please see my comment here: Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Enforcement#Discussion among uninvolved editors about the appeal by Dojarca. -- Petri Krohn (talk) 20:05, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- The only comment I see from you in that section is directed at Fut. perf., not me. I'm not sure what you'd like me to say when your comments and mine are on different matters—I explained why their edits were disruptive, you're talking about their socking. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:16, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- You seem to be commenting on the socking issue, and your comment appeared after I started writing my statement, at that time directed to Future Perf. In fact, In my comment I ask that a specific example of an inappropriate edit (socking) be presented. -- Petri Krohn (talk) 20:43, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- Using more than one account to participate in the same discussion without publicly disclosing the connection is sock-puppetry. Whether that's what they meant to do, I reserve judgement, but it's what they did and it's clearly against policy. To put it in context, I have an alternate account, User:Whisky drinker, but I make the connection abundantly clear, so if I were to edit in the same discussions as I do with this account, everybody can tell (from the signature and the userpage) that there is one person behind the two accounts. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:54, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- My argument is that I cannot find a single case where the two accounts have participated in the same discussion. (They share some time-separated edits in uncontroversial articles.) Two unrelated discussions in WP:AE is not "the same discussion". What MathFacts did was forgot to log out before commenting on the Dojarca case, thus revealing his alternate account. That may be stupid, but not sanctionable. -- Petri Krohn (talk) 21:22, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- P.S. – For what its worth, MathFacts did "publicly disclose" that he is Dojarca. -- Petri Krohn (talk) 21:26, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- OK, A) diff please, where did he declare the connection? B) this edit is by the sock in the AE appeal regarding the master and C) you are aware that my name doesn't appear anywhere in the block logs of either sock or master, aren't you? This isn't "my" block, but I'm intrigued enough that I'll listen to any argument that the accounts weren't being used abusively. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:38, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

How to get a discussion on a discussion page?
Dear Mr. Mitchell, Here is an response and edited text to an edit I am trying to do. user talk:D c weber . A question for you is, what is the procedure to get a discussion going? I put my edited copy on the discussion page of Talk:Tests_of_general_relativity#Tests_of_general_relativity_theory last month , but no one responded. So, I added a POV-section tag to the page so that it would flag the section as open for discussion. D c weber (talk) 17:49, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- My suggestion would be to contact a few of the people who were reverting you the other day on their talk pages and point them to the talk page and ask for their input. You might also want to let User:Favonian you're doing that. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:55, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
- Dear Mr. Mitchell, I have 2 related questions, 1) I was blocked because I put a label of POV-section on a section that had discussion commencing on the discussion page. Isn't the purpose of the label to let readers know that there is a discussion going on on the discussion tab? Was I incorrect to add the label or was the administrator user:Favonian incorrect to block me?, 2) In the discussion, the administrator user:Favonian is now telling me that there is an organization, called "NPA", that is not a reliable source. But, the main Wiki premise at [WP:RS]] is that "Wikipedia articles should be based on reliable, published sources, making sure that all majority and significant minority views that have appeared in reliable, published sources are covered". (emphasis on "all" and on "significant") Question is, how & who defines what a "significant minority" is? Are there "significant minorities" that are banned from Wiki (& so not considered part of the "all")?D c weber (talk) 13:52, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
Just want to clear the air
Hey HJ. Just wanted to clear the air, or start a conversation to do so since we've bumped into each other a couple times over the past couple days. Been hopping back on Huggle as of late and doing my best to fight vandalism. As time has gone on, I've been deferring more and more to the anonymous editor's apparent good faith edits, even if unsourced. In fact, I've been trying to toss out a fair few welcome templates to try to spread the love. I understand your disagreement on Paralympiakos' nomination for rollback. I hadn't seen the withdrawal of those privilege's prior to nominating (despite lots of edits via huggle, sometimes I don't know how to use the logs pages as well as I should). I appreciate your contributions and your quick follow-up when you're online. If there's anything that you think I can do better, please feel free to let me know. Hope you're having a great day!--GnoworTC 19:39, 15 December 2010 (UTC)
- The message is appreciated. :) I don't yet have a strong opinion on Paralympiakos' rollback, but he's very unlikely to find an admin who would restore it without him discussing it with me (because most would consider it discourteous to reverse my action without talking to me). Obviously I'm inclined against restoring it because I removed it in the first place, but he's more than welcome to come here and discuss it with me. Anyway, you have a good Christmas.
