OMG

Many many happy returns of the day! How old are you now mr. Potter? Well I hope you are having a blast with your friends. When you come back, can you come to my talk page and check whether I installed Miszabot III correctly there? My talk page is becoming unmanageable nowadays. :( And I'm pretty stupid in setting up these things. — Legolas (talk2me) 14:39, 17 December 2010 (UTC)

Considering retirement

Hello HJ! It's been over 7 months since you became an administrator at this wiki. You've managed to do thousands of admin actions (most of them successful), even if you've been criticized for several others which were more or less good.

Well, as you may already know, 2010 is leaning towards its end. Several well-established users have retired, which is unfortunate, as we need more contributors to grow as a project.

HJ, I've lost interest in writing Wikipedia. Nowadays I'm more interested in reading Wikipedia. I feel much more comfortable with doing tasks that only require the mouse, rather than tasks that require writing on the keyboard. I've lost interest in content editing. I'm not making as much edits per day as I did a few months ago. The amount of users that have retired or are currently on a wiki-break makes it hard to have anyone to contact with – but because of that, it's great that I can still contact you!

HJ, I still appreciate the amount of time you've put on helping me become a good and enthusiastic editor – that's excellent. However, despite my comments on your talk page (which you probably appreciate) etc, I can't think of anything that suggests this project grows with me. I haven't managed to get a GA, FA, etc. Nothing.

HJ, for the above reasons, I'm considering retiring from Wikipedia. Not just because of those reasons, but also because I'm having school-related issues that I need to spend more time on rather than on Wikipedia, and the amount of disputes I have been involved in during my first (and maybe only) year as a Wikipedian means it's no longer as fun to write Wikipedia as I earlier felt. HJ, I would like you to know that if I decide to retire, that's my choice, not yours or anyone else's.

Whether I decide to retire or not, I hope you continue to be a great administrator. Best regards, HeyMid (contribs) 11:44, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Your recent use of RevDel on the move log

I see that you have receently (yesterday at 21:17 UTC) hid some entries from the move log(1, 2,3, but not the entries of the correction. If you think that the target name needs hiding, please hide this information on the return rename (and the appropriate entries in the page histories); if not, please restore the "action and target" part of the edit, as the problematic URL is only in the "edit summary" part. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 06:53, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Christmas Card
Christmas is here! (refresh)

File:Wikisanta-no motto.png

Hello my fellow Wikipedians. I wish you all Safe Holidays, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year.

A Tribute to all contributors:
You keep the content of Wikipedia going and active and mostly right. You're the backbone; that technical personnel back up, and without you, we would lose our jobs. You also have to deal with some of the trials we put you through, but you're doing a great job. So again, Thank you and have a Merry Christmas. -- DQ (t) Merry Chrismasand a Happy New Year!
A Tribute to Rollbackers, Account Creators, Reviewers, and Autoreviewers:
I know your positions the best as I have most of the above stated. Wikipedia would be a trash dump of foul language, sockpuppets, legitimate people who can't create accounts or edit pages, and no additional content being added. Cheers to everyone who helps Wikipedia like this (and doesn't turn bad) who doesn't mop, but scrubs the floor. Now, make sure to take a break and go do some stuff with friends or family. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas. -- DQ (t) Merry Chrismasand a Happy New Year!
A Tribute to all Administrators:
Administrators, you're well appreciated as you mop up the floor and help the non-admins not have to clean up more messes. Your tools along with your judgement are great assets to non-admins. I am suprised how some of you don't just walk away from all the constant harassment and drama. But thank you for sticking to your post and remember to get some sleep these holidays. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas. -- DQ (t) Merry Chrismasand a Happy New Year!
A Tribute to all Oversighters:
Your job doesn't come to a halt with the holidays, you're always on 24/7 call. You're the police out there making sure that you are showing there are people out there protecting us. Your contibutions could be the difference between a very serious threat on ourselves and safe holidays. So thank you for taking on the hard task. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas. -- DQ (t) Merry Chrismasand a Happy New Year!
A Tribute to all Checkusers:
Your job doesn't end just with the holidays, like I said to oversighters above, so your always on 24/7 call. You're the investigators, CIA, FBI, CSIS, and other investigative organizations, constantly protecting us and our environment. We may not see your contributions all the time, but we know there is someone out there looking out for us and protecting behind the scenes - even when we don't know what's going on. So thank you for taking on the hard task. Thank you and have a Merry Christmas. -- DQ (t) Merry Chrismasand a Happy New Year!

Again Safe Holidays and Merry Christmas. -- DQ (t) Merry Chrismasand a Happy New Year! 20:11, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Tajik + AE

Hi. It's come to my attention that Tajik (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) is under a 1RR editing restriction. IMO, he's violated that restriction in an edit war that spans several articles: Languages of Afghanistan (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views), Dari (Persian) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views), Afghanistan (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views), in a multi-sided edit war in which no one has clean hands (you can see the smackdown I gave the editors here. While I don't want to aid one side of this dispute, can you please confirm for me a) that he is still on parole (he is maintaining that he was informed it was only 1 year in length, but I don't see that), and b) your second opinion that this is a parole violation. Magog the Ogre (talk) 19:26, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

I have reasons to believe that User:Tajik may be using an alternative way (some kind of proxy IP changer tool) to edit Wikipedia articles using an account other than his main (Tajik) one. He is obviously active in Wikipedia all the time (you could say 24-7) but his main (Tajik) account only makes very few edits. One wonders what does Tajik do if he's always active in Wikipedia but not editing much? It appears to me that everytime Tajik got involved in a dispute with someone, strangely these IDs popped up to strongly support his view (Sommerkom (talk · contribs), Alefbe (talk · contribs), Chartinael (talk · contribs), Cabolitae (talk · contribs), علی ویکی (talk · contribs),JCAla (talk · contribs), Inuit18 (talk · contribs)), they all think and edit the same articles as Tajik. I know some of these names are connected but to file so many ISPs is not worth it.--Lagoo sab (talk) 23:25, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
Feel free to ask for IP-checks or whatever tool necessary. I did not have and I do not have any sockpuppets, proxies, or whatever. And I have nothing to hide. However, at least be fair and notify all other users that you have mentioned, if you think that they are sockpuppets or proxies. And please maintain civility. It seems to me that you only want "counter" this with your baseless accusations. Tajik (talk) 23:43, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
Notification is not mandatory, and may, in some instances, lead to further disruption or provide a sockpuppeteer with guidance on how to avoid detection.--Lagoo sab (talk) 23:58, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
I am not using any other identities to edit wikipedia. This paranoia is insane. Lagoo Sab is truly not accepting editors that differ in opinion. Chartinael (talk) 23:50, 21 December 2010 (UTC)
Me not have problems with 99.99999999% editors. It's just Tajik who started attacking my edits and then you popped-up and began supporting his view. In fact, you did not even consider 1% of my view. Why are you acting as if you are professors at Afghan studies and now you're following me everywhere, which is just annoying. Edits such as this indicates that you are Persian (or Tajik), because westerners don't use such phrases.--Lagoo sab (talk) 00:06, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
Please read over WP:CIV before you go any further. Casting aspersions about an editor's ethnic origin and accusing them of socking without backing up your claims is not just uncivil, but wholly unproductive in building an encyclopaedia. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:42, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
  • I'm sorry I can't be of more help, but, as far as I know, I haven't had anything to do with Tajik since I was newly minted. The dispute I waded into seven months ago ended when the other party was indef'd for socking and I haven't kept up with him since, so I'm afraid I've no idea what, if any, sanctions he is under. The only thing I can suggest is search for his username on arb cases and the AE archives (there might also be the odd ANI thread). HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:42, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
Jesus Christ guys, how did the fact that I chewed you out and then swore at you on two different pages not give you the impression that you need to stop following each other around and sniping at each other? Magog the Ogre (talk) 00:47, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
While we're here, how about full protection of those articles and/or blocking both these guys? I'm going to block the next person who makes an unconstructive comment in this thread. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 00:53, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
U iz srs admin; srs biznis admin stuff. Anyway, that seems to stop the conversation dry. :) Magog the Ogre (talk) 03:29, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
Oh I nearly forgot to say: I don't really want to protect the page because I feel like the editors are misbehaving, and we should be dealing with it on a case by case basis. I don't like to protect unless really necessary; I definitely prefer to block. Magog the Ogre (talk) 03:33, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
Seems to have had the desired effect! I completely agree with you on blocking vs protection, though the latter can be easier in the case of multiple edit warriors. Regardless of ArbCom restrictions, these guys have both engaged in blockable behaviour so if it continues, that would seem like the way to put an end to it. Appears unstable - two editors are excising any use of the words "left wing" to descirbe the organization - including excision of RS sources using the term. As they had not proposed any such revisions during the time the article was protected (normal procedure), I am left with the impression that they think no one will deter such excisions. I had an account User:Mag41, which I used before. I do not use that account now, can you delete that account? Or should I redirect the user page and talk page of that account to my existing account? Thank you. Novice7 | Talk 13:42, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Accounts can't be deleted. Usually when editors get new accounts and they retire an old account, they redirect it to their new account or place some sort of template on it. Some editors also get these old accounts blocked as well. ~NerdyScienceDude 13:49, 24 December 2010 (UTC)

Armenia-Azerbaijan 2

Sorry, I was under the impression that all editors were restricted to 1RR on all articles concerning Armenia-Azerbaijan, broadly contrued.

I did find this:
Notice: Under the terms of Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Armenia-Azerbaijan 2, any editor who edits articles which relate to the region of Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran and the ethnic and historical issues related to that area in an aggressive point of view manner marked by incivility may be placed under several editing restrictions, by notice on that editor's talk page. This notice is to inform you that based on your edits, you are hereby placed under the following restrictions:

  • 1. Revert limitation (formerly known as revert parole). You are limited to one revert per page per week, excepting obvious vandalism, and are required to discuss any content reversions on the page's talk page.
  • 2. Supervised editing (formerly known as probation). You may be banned by any administrator from editing any or all articles which relate to the region of Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Iran and the ethnic and historical issues related to that area should you fail to maintain a reasonable degree of civility in your interactions with one another concerning disputes which may arise.
  • 3. Civility supervision (formerly known as civility parole). If you make any edits which are judged by an administrator to be uncivil, personal attacks, or assumptions of bad faith, then you may be blocked for a short time of up to one week for repeat offenses.

My apologies for posting here on your talk page, I will post this on the enforcement page. --Kansas Bear (talk) 21:39, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi HJ! WP:TFD#Template:Sockblock (or Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2010 December 21#Template:Sockblock) has been open since December 5, and has been relisted twice, with additional comments from only one more user. I see consensus for merging the two templates mentioned there, which I've done now. If you can, could you take a look and see if you can do anything about it? (e.g closing it) Thanks in advance! HeyMid (contribs) 23:24, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

your discussion doesnt seem to have a continuing conversation. well, consensus can wait forever. i support an inclusion, just not broadscale. a limited version (and a rare) event can easily get consensus. at the very least we can agree.(Lihaas (talk) 04:41, 29 December 2010 (UTC)).

  • I'm more used to the Vector interface than the MonoBook one, and it's alot nicer, but it has compatibility issues – like alignment issues, and the "rollback all" tool doesn't work in the Vector interface. HeyMid (contribs) 23:03, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
some of my scripts and buttons disappeared when things went Vector - I'm sure most of them would still be there in drop down menus and so forth. But why bother to find out when the design philosophy was obvious and the way back to Monobook was easy? I knew Vector wasn't for me as soon as I sussed out that it was for those who want an uncluttered interface and are happy for everything to take an extra click or two. But Vector does have the advantage that you know when you've been logged out, and it could be a good recruiting slogan to get IPs to open accounts. ϢereSpielChequers 23:40, 29 December 2010 (UTC)
I wonder if it did have any effect like that. I can see the advantage of a tidier display, but vector doesn't really tidy anything. It's a bit like the teenager who "tidies" his bedroom, but actually just hides everything in the wardrobe! I like my buttons where they are, chaotic as it is. User talk Editnotice

i dont know if you remember this User talk:Lihaas/Editnotice but it was at your behest and i thanked you for getting to know about it. However, it just dawned on me that User:Kevin McE apparently clearly vandalised the page (and theres a warning for refactoring talk pages) purely on his whim. I have warned him, but i feel it may very well mandate a higher leel warning from an admin perhaps. ps- i see youve also runaway from ITN - nowadays it goes hours/days without an update. ;)(Lihaas (talk) 02:07, 31 December 2010 (UTC)).

I remember. There's not much I can do about it, though, because it happened months ago (back in September), besides which, admins have no greater power to issue warnings than anyone else, though, obviously, we're the only ones who can act on the warnings. I haven't run away from ITN, I'm just less active on Wikipedia at the minute. I'm sure my activity levels will pick up before too long. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 03:32, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
I'm really wondering where everyone really am. HJ is like the only one I can talk with right now, because everyone is seemingly busy at the end of the year. HeyMid (contribs) 14:23, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
It's new year's eve, I expect most people are or will be (depending on timezones) out celebrating or getting ready to go out. I have a nice bottle of single malt I'll be finishing off in a few hours! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:26, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Some users (such as TFOWR) stopped editing in November, already. I don't know whether this is also in some way related to Christmas/New Year's eve, but it's also sad that we've lost several good contributors this year. HeyMid (contribs) 14:30, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Let's look back, shall we? Anyone remember dffgd? How about Tommy2010? Or The Thing That Should Not Be? Fastily also left. There are probably more that I can't think of off the top of my head. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 14:34, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
It's a shame, but people come and go all the time, it's just part of life. We've also picked up a lot of good contributors this year. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:38, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
And then we have a recently indefblocked editor. HeyMid (contribs) 14:39, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
(ECx2)Ya, I remember when Fastily left, the essay he left on his Talk Page, with the amount of fighting that goes on here, It's not surprising. I have thought about going to Huggle, at least until Wayne Slam gets his Huggle back because our anti-vandalism side is Weak. Tofutwitch11 (TALK) 14:40, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

Knowing this, I might have to go back into the field, so to speak. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 14:43, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

A whole bottle of single malt (god knows ive done that before (nearly))? peeps tried to rip me off on a 12-year old...i strongly said no! ;)(Lihaas (talk) 04:54, 2 January 2011 (UTC)).

Image vandal on Asking Alexandria

We have a vandal uploading innaporpriate images through Commons and placing them on here. Their only offense was torwards the article for Asking Alexandria, but may not stop there. I've already warned them, if Commons has a warning feature perhaps you can take care of the person's vandalism-uploading there and be sure to delete the images. • GunMetal Angel 22:27, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

How is the image inappropriate? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:30, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Ummmm, take a look at their crotches??? =S • GunMetal Angel 22:34, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Oh my... Not sure how I missed that the first time! I've indef'd them here and requested deletion of the image on Commons and reported them to the Commons equivalent of AIV. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:42, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, since you're from the UK I bet you've heard of that band. Personally, I've met them all and they didn't have big gray dicks hanging from inbetween their legs when they stood up, ahaha. • GunMetal Angel 22:45, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

I've never hear of them actually, though if they're a proper rock band, they'd probably be flattered by the pic! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:48, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Aha, well they're a type of metal actually, ya know the kind with screams, breakdowns, guitar solos, singing parts and then fast parts again, aha. Knowing them, they'd laugh themselves silly if they saw that. Hmm, well thanks again. Have a good one. • GunMetal Angel 22:51, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Looks like they should borrow the socks used by the Red Hot Chili Peppers in a couple of their posters ("Fight like a Brave" and "Abbey Road Spoof" to name two.} BTW I forgot to get here to wish you a Merry Xmas last week HJM so let me take this moment to wish you a happy and safe New Years Eve and best wishes for 2011 both on wiki and off. MarnetteD | Talk 22:53, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Why thank you, and a happy new year to yourself, as well. In just over an hour, I'll go up to the pub for a drink or three and a good chorus of Auld Lang Syne! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:56, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, but I'm from the US and it's 3:00 p.m., precisely right now, so the fun doesn't start until about 3 hours. So happy New Years to you all and have a safe drive home. =) • GunMetal Angel 23:00, 31 December 2010 (UTC)

UTC-8, that's the West coast isn't it (if I remember correctly from my trip to San Francisco)? HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:02, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
You are right about the location (though parts of Nevada like Las Vegas are also in that zone). When I was young I fantasized about spending this night at the North or South Pole. I mean every hour you just move a few feet to the left and start partying all over again. Fortunately, my liver is now to old and messed up to survive that :-) Happy Hogmanay. MarnetteD | Talk 23:18, 31 December 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I live in a town close to Vegas, it's a small but comfy place that well, isn't too great. Umm, we like to call it Pah-dump. And yes, Asking Alexandria actually did come to this small little town for a music festival one day during the summer of 2010. • GunMetal Angel 09:24, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Hogmanay greeting

Thank you very much for working with me in 2010 to make the encyclopedia a better place. Regardless of any disagreements we may have had, I want to wish you all the very best for 2011. I look forward to working with you, and I hope for health and happiness to you and your family in the year to come. I therefore send you this glass of the cratur, so you can celebrate, whether it is Hogmanay or New Year's Day where you are. Warmest regards, --John (talk) 04:58, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Happy New Year!

Hello there HJ, just wanting to wish you a happy new year! Cheers, mc10 (t/c) 07:07, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Thank you and a thought

Thank you for commenting on AE in the request involving me. I may not completely agree with your reasoning, but I do appreciate you taking your time to look into the issue nonetheless. On a parting note, here's a mini-essay I wrote that you may find interesting. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 01:42, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Geller

Hi dude, the user I reported at 3RR is straight back into it, I reverted back to the stable and left him a note on his talkpage asking him to move to discussion and he just reverted again, thoughts? Off2riorob (talk) 16:20, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

I've blocked them for 72 hours. Any more of it and the block durations will get significantly longer. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 16:39, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks Harry, he really needs to discuss on the talkpage in the thread I opened. I am actually not even involved in the subject. But serous allegations deserve discussion - basic issue is anti muslim or anti islamist, another user also objects to the alteration so some discussion is clearly required.

Hmm, not the blocked user I predicted. I'll get to it in a minute. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:03, 2 January 2011 (UTC)

Barnstar!

The Administrator's Barnstar
HJ Mitchell is hereby awarded this barnstar for cleaning up the mess at Category:Wikipedian usernames editors have expressed concern over! HeyMid (contribs) 19:14, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks! The challenge now is to stop it becoming such a mess again! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:17, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Awesome! :) HeyMid (contribs) 19:18, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Why cant this place have Pornstar badges, too? I'm gonna complain... HalfShadow 19:19, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Now that would be an incentive to clear out a backlog! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:20, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
I don't know, should the blocked accounts be removed from that category? HeyMid (contribs) 19:24, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Also, how did you remove the TOC from your user page? HeyMid (contribs) 19:27, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Yes, because they're no longer an active concern, but KingpinBot will remove them when it next runs if there are any left. And, I don't think I did, it was probably a stalker, but I think {{NOTOC}} does that. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:29, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, I'm the one who left the blocked ones in the category. I believe in technology and automation. :-) KrakatoaKatie 21:12, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
As long as they don't take over the world! ;) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:20, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Oh, I didn't understand that HJ's user page doesn't have enough headlines for it to have a TOC. HeyMid (contribs) 21:20, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
