[edit]The Manual of Style for Thailand-related articles (the original discussion regarding which you were involved in) has been in limbo as a historic proposal for quite a while. Discussions are taking place at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Thailand#Updating the Manual of Style in hopes of developing the page into a usable guideline. A major issue being discussed is the naming of articles on Thai royalty, which so far has relied on the status quo, but lacks clear community consensus. Raions
[edit]Hi, I noticed that you moved a lot of Ukraine locations to new names. I am not an expert on the Ukraine so I have no comment on the name changes except that you changed many of the Raions to "Raion" and many to "raion". It is not proper formatting that some should be capitalized and some should not, so could you please rename some of the articles so that they are all one way? Move request for Talk:Isarco
[edit]Hello. Could you move Talk:Isarco to Talk:Eisack? In 2007, users voted there 5.5-1 in favour of "Eisack", with 2.5-1 against "Isarco". Despite the quite clear outcome of the discussion and the vote above, though, the page had been unilaterally moved by User:Icsunonove on 27 September 2007, who was incidentally the only one who had voted against "Eisack". Bogd Khan
[edit]Hi, I think this whole 'emperor' and 'khan' business is all a bit misleading. His position was more like that of the Dalai Lama in 1911-1951 Tibet, I'd say. I.e. he was really not just a political, but also (maybe even more importantly) a religious figure. In my opinion it is therefore better to just refer to him by his title, and then usually I prefer Jebtsundamba Khutughtu because this is what he was all the time, as opposed to Bogd Khan which he only became in 1911. 'Bogd Khan' has the extra problem that before 1911, it was the title used for the Qing emperors in Beijing, and is occasionally used as such in old literature (Przhewalski and the like). P.S. I really think your edits are generally alright, even if I sometimes might sound a bit different. In the case of Mongolia, it often is a bit difficult to tell fact from fiction. Sukhbaatar statue
[edit]Hi, may I ask where that info about the Sukhbaatar statue replacing his mausoleum is from? If this refers to the statue in the center of Sukhbaatar square, this one was already there before the goverment palace was extended. Although it got a new paint also around 2006. The statue is just not visible on that old picture on the government palace article because of the angle. The statue is in the center of the square, the mausoleum was closer to the northern edge. The government palace was extended southward, that was the reason why the mausoleum had to go. Btw. google earth shows the construction site. Regards, Yaan (talk) 19:39, 30 January 2009 (UTC)

I received your e-mail about the Ortisei name change. According to Wikipedia:Naming conventions, we must use the name that most English speakers would most easily recognize. The editors in favor of the move provided evidence that Ortisei was the most-used name in the English-speaking world. One editor initially disputed that, but his concerns were addressed in the further discussion. No other editors provided valid points based on Wikipedia policy.
You also asserted that a majority of votes is required. This is a common misconception. With the exception of a few processes, English Wikipedia does not work by majority vote. For the most directly applicable guideline which deals with this, see Wikipedia:Polling is not a substitute for discussion, especially the section on Deletion, moving and featuring. You should also read WP:Consensus (particularly the section marked Participating in community discussions). For a guide on how administrators determine consensus in discussions, you should read WP:Rough consensus; while it is concerned with deletion, the same logic applies to most discussions.

I'm asking because I began working on it myself and was following the list on Raions of Ukraine. I have noticed some variations in the names (here). If the Imperial Warrant is to William Steinway and not to the company Steinway & Sons, I think we should move the sentence to the article about William Steinway. Italian Villas etc
[edit]I have reverted your pointless edit here [2], which I have only just spotted. Making images so large that the text is sandwiched into a narrow column is demeaning to the article, as is making pictures explaining a minor point of architecture larger than the lead image which actually concerns the subject. I spend a great deal of time finding images to explain points, you making them so large that the point is lost, or out of proportion, is less than helpful. Teatro Regio di Torino
[edit]Hi. I've just noticed that you moved the title of this page to Royal Theatre of Turin and I'm wondering why - I've never heard it referred to by that name. I've had a look at List of opera houses and I can't see many other houses whose names have been translated into English. In my experience, English speakers refer to most opera houses in countries where the local language is French, Spanish, Italian, German by their local names - La Scala rather than The Staircase, La Monnaie rather than The Mint, Theater an der Wien rather than Theatre on the River Wien, Opéra-Comique rather than Comic Opera, Teatro Real rather than Royal Theatre. The few exceptions are very well-known houses with generally recognised English names (e.g. Vienna State Opera) and names in Scandinavian, East European, Far East, etc. languages - see here. I sometimes wonder - I am not going to touch the article - but hell in 1975 (?) they were panicking about the same issues - when I was regularly visiting the place in 1985.1995.1996 - there were issues which the Indonesian government was aware of - any NGO consultancy/UN Body from outside of Indonesia never gets anywhere with their advice - even if the Indonesians put armed guards (which I encountered after the bombings in the 1980's) - all archeological sites in java have the same problem - the people are poor if they can lift it - the biggest miracles in Javanese archaeological history is when gold hordes and the candi i used to live next to - actually survive discovery... tourism in the end will destroy all the sites - with help from the government - oops sorry - I just remember my best experience of Yogyakarta - the rainy season - Borobodur and the other monuments need umbrellas to last even another 100 years - the thing was they were covered by either earth or vegetation in the past to protect them from the elements - prettying them up for tourists is a kiss of death for the stone SatuSuro 15:35, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

Removal of images on New York City Subway station articles
[edit]I don't understand your removal of images in multiple station articles' infoboxes. Some of the pictures you are adding are better, some aren't. Can you move the images to the gallery section instead of removing them entirely? Please enlighten me on your rational.

This one is the same subject as the one it replaced, but different cropping; Mis-titled caption
- what you see as "blurred" trains, I see as dynamic images where the train is clearly moving. These were taken without a flash, in order to give a better impression of the station as it appears to the human eye (apart from the moving train of course). By using flash, the composition of light, colour, etc. completely changes in the image and stops becoming a true depiction of the object (speak: station) itself. The images of stations should not only show the platform, but also the train IMO. Commuters can also be shown. But I frankly find an image of a station devoid of trains or people flat and boring, there should be some kind of action in it to give an overall better impression of what normally goes on there. - Ok, I see your point on the quality of the two images that were taken with a flash. I don't have the same opinion on moving trains.
- I'm dropping my support of the 68th Street-Hunter College pic.
- I don't think the flash use on the Rector Street image significantly degrades that image. There is some slight reflection of the flash on the column and wall tile. I don't support your opinion that every image must include people and/or trains. The system is vast and varied, these "empty platform" pics can be included, but shouldn't necessarily be the infobox pic.
- I still like the Wall Street (Lex) pic. I don't think the station name has to be included in the pic in the infobox. (Many stations have pictures of street stairs in their infoboxes.) If the station name is not in the picture, it should definitely be in the file name though.
- Caption on the 4th says... "The Lexington Avenue upper-level local station, opened in 1918." A good picture needed for that article, but not what is depicted. A better caption would be "A station mosaic name tablet on the upper level."

- Ok, I see your point on the quality of the two images that were taken with a flash. I don't have the same opinion on moving trains.
- 1st image: use of flash, no train to be seen and not much of the rest of the station either. 2nd image: Flash used again, no people, no train, nothing dynamic about it. 3rd image: I kinda like it as well, but the name of the station cannot be seen unlike the replacement. I don't remember if I took the Rector Street image with a flash, I don't believe I did. (The original image was darker than the posted one, my editing may have sucked.) But I tend not to use a flash in my pictures (at least my most recent ones) because they do throw off the lighting. The reflection that "destroys" the image comes from the lights on the left. That's one of the common problems I face that I can't avoid. See File:Grand Street BMT Canarsie SB platform.jpg for example, which would be better without the reflections. I only stated taking subway pictures recently, and I am realizing lighting is a major factor in producing good-quality images; I apologize if my photography is not as good as yours.
In response to dynamism in images, there are plenty of images that don't include people in them, and that's the preference of many photographers in the subject. Take a look at the pictures at nycsubway.org and you'll find many of them don't include people. It is the station that should be the focus, with people or without. For a good example of a moving-train picutre, see File:NYCSub 7 Vernon Jackson 3.jpg, which was nominated for Featured Picture but was rejected due to a lack of educational value. - Close. The gallery isn't blocking the box on the right, but it is forced down on the bottom of that box. And I doubt that the type of software or the monitor I'm using matters that much. I've had some of the same problems when I've used IE 7(as you can see in this edit, of Pavonia-Newport (HBLR station)) and bigger monitors than this. Embassy naming conventions

- I didn't particularly care for the older names of those articles, but I would still suggest building consensus before you move hundreds and hundreds of them. That's a lot of work to do to have them all undone. And I disagree that there in any name for them that is not OR (your formula included) since an "embassy" refers to the mission and not the building, be we have foolishly wrote articles about buildings (I have brought this up many times to no end). --Kevlar (talk • contribs) 23:53, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
- Allow me to illustrate. Canada House and Macdonald House are buildings. The High Commission of Canada in London (or even better ...in the United Kingdom) is a mission. This is the pattern I have been trying to get all of our articles to follow, to no avail. Hello! May I also say that titles are a better way of disambiguating the articles, if a person is say searching for Elisabeth of Poland, Queen of Hungary, they would see several women with their dates of birth and death and it is unlikely they'd know which one to look at. Emir or Emirate?
[edit]I just expanded Zazzau Emirate from a redirect to a stub. Then I spotted that you had just expanded Emir of Zazzau from a redirect to the stub! I suppose technically the Emir and the Emirate are different, but am not sure that there would be enough content to justify two articles. No strong feelings. Comments? - For now, I will redirect the Emir to the Emirate and keep on expanding. It can always be split out again later. I have a feeling the Emirate article should be split: Zazzau Hausa State and the successor Fulani State, perhaps better called Zaria Emirate. I will see how much content I can find and maybe split later.
- I have been haphazardly trying to create basic entries for the traditional states and their current rulers. What I find is that most states whether in the north, west or east do not follow strict inheritance, but the ruler is appointed by a council of kingmakers from one or more royal families (there may be two or three families). A person could be "royalty" as a member of a royal family, but not a "ruler". Nowadays there is a fashion to appoint a "traditional ruler" for every small community, regardless of whether it was ever an independent state. With these, the governor just picks a leading figure, usually a politician, so a person could be "ruler" but not "royalty".
- I have been vaguely thinking of breaking down the traditional states into type categories. Obvious ones are Yoruba, Hausa 7+7, Other emirates, Other. I suspect this does not work... Aymatth2 (talk) 17:50, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
Complicated and interesting. Nigeria is far more diverse than Europe, and had sophisticated states like the Bornu Empire and Ile-Ife when Europe was in the dark ages. Well, you and other users said that a cross or something else is preferable to the Jesus face image, so I just changed it to "Three Crosses.jpg" under the grounds of WP:BRD: there is no consensus, but many people are against the current Jesus face image, so I made the edit to facilitate more discussion and move towards resolution of the disputed image. Carlaude just wrote that I should not go against the consensus by posting a different pic, but there is no consensus for the Jesus face image! He further stated I should revert the image or he will. Should I revert the image, or should Carlaude allow more discussion instead of reverting my image? This is my first time doing WP:BRD, and your comments on the talk page would be much appreciated.

Flag of Burma
[edit]The new version of the file is mostly fine, but the emblem became little asymmetrical and squished in the last round of tweaks. I've reuploaded a slightly cleaner version of the new rendition. As for the ratio, the 9:5 ratio was not set down until the 1947 constitution. British Burma's flag was at 1:2 and the Konbaung flag probably didn't have a set ratio (and if it did no record of it survives). It would be anachronistic to put the State of Burma flag in this ratio. I've changed the image back to 2:3 since that corresponds to the photo and the FOTW image based on the photo.
