Hello Graham,
My father is legally blind. I am curious to know what tool allows you to note a change in spelling which does not affect pronunciation.
Any response should be right here.
From Toronto, Varlaam (talk) 05:06, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Varlaam, my screen reader JAWS allows me to review text character by character by pressing the left and right arrow keys, so that's how I notice spelling changes that don't affect pronunciation. Does your father use, or have any interest in, computers? Graham87 05:24, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- We are both engineers and he's a computer science prof.
- Ergonomics is a long-time interest area of his; he is often more current than me.
- The lab where I worked after university had a speech synthesis project, amongst others. But that was before you were born.
- Back in the 1980s there was a lot of interest in trying to use computer technology to allow people to participate broadly in society when they had been isolated up until then.
- But back then, would anyone have imagined a sysop who can't see?
- I really really doubt that.
- Things have come a very long way, and that's a good thing. Varlaam (talk) 06:35, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- P.S. I worked for a little while in Australia. But that was in 1988 in Sydney. I have very fond memories. Varlaam (talk) 06:37, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- Wow, I'm fascinated by some of the older speech synthesisers; I used to do a lot of work with DECtalk. Are any of your old lab's projects mentioned in Klatt's History of Speech Synthesis, by any chance? I see computer accessibility (for blind people at least in home devices) as more of a pendulum than something that's always improving. When home computers had been using DOS for a while, there was a lot of demand for DOS screen readers, and some of them developed into quite amazing programs. Then Windows came along, and it wasn't until about 1998 that there were any really good Windows screen readers, as it took that long to figure out how to make Windows accessible for blind users. We're seeing the same thing now with Ajax; technology for the blind hasn't quite caught up with programs like Google Docs yet. Graham87 08:27, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

< span > in article titles
I'm contacting you only because of our previous correspondence--maybe you can direct me to the appropriate resource. All of a sudden, I am seeing article titles (not just the ones I've been working on) appear like this:
< span dir="auto" >Maria Montessori/< /span >"
(i.e., with the markup codes showing; spaces added here to keep the markup from rendering in this message)
Occasionally in the past I have also seen a glitch with tags showing; I seem to recall that this was documented somewhere.
Thanks for any help you can offer. Dave Ayer (talk) 14:49, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- Replying here, or would you be watching _my_ talk page, since we're corresponding? (Still getting up to speed here on the conventions.) Any way, it was the StumbleUpon toolbar, per suggestion at Village Pump. Thanks! (BTW, your nowiki explanation confused me at first, since it rendered out without the nowiki--making it appear that interpretation could be turned off using just quotes. Now that I'm editing, I can see what you meant.) Dave Ayer (talk) 15:05, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
Paul Wiggins - Paralympian
Hi, I've collected information to develop an article for Paul Wiggins, Paralympic athlete from Tasmania. There is already a Paul Wiggins profile on wikipedia for a NFL player - what is the protocol in this situation? Also I've noticed that some of the links in images are directing the NFL page so once I have an article online I'll try to change this. Thank you Melissa Carlton (talk) 00:57, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for your help with the Paul Wiggins article, it's coming together nicely. I'm not sure how to link to the same reference a number of times without having to repeat it in the list of references. Could you please help me with this or point me in the right direction? Thank you Melissa Carlton (talk) 09:51, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue One - Recent news from the Teahouse
Hi! Welcome to the first edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!
- Metrics are out from week one. Week one showed that the need for Teahouse hosts to invite new editors to the Teahouse is urgent for this pilot period. It also showed that emailing new users invitations is a powerful tool, with new editors responding more to emails than to talk page templates. We also learned that the customized database reports created for the Teahouse have the highest return rate of participation by invitees. Check out the metrics here and see how you can help with inviting in our Invitation Guide.
- A refreshed "Your hosts" page encourages experienced Wikipedians to learn about the Teahouse and participate. With community input, the Teahouse has updated the Your hosts page which details the host roles within the Teahouse pilot and the importance that hosts play in providing a friendly, special experience not always found on other welcome/help spaces on Wikipedia. It also explains how Teahouse hosts are important regarding metrics reporting during this pilot. Are you an experienced editor who wants to help out? Take a look at the new page today and start learning about the hosts tasks and how you can participate!
- Introduce yourself and meet new guests at the Teahouse. Take the time to welcome and get to know the latest guests at the Teahouse. New & experienced editors to Wikipedia can add a brief infobox about themselves and get to know one another with direct links to userpages. Drop off some wikilove to these editors today, they'll surely be happy to feel the wikilove!
You are receiving The Tea Leaf after expressing interest or participating in the Teahouse! To remove yourself from receiving future newsletters, please remove your username here. Sarah (talk) 16:04, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
you messed up
When you moved Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss to elsewhere by mistake, then realized it and moved it back to its proper place again, you forgot to re-add the page protection someone else put there to keep IP addresses from vandalizing it, like the one I just reverted did. If its linked to on the main page, then the article will get vandalize. Please restore that protection. Dream Focus 05:31, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

YouTube links
Hello Graham87, you are right, but note the details and my last remark in the following text, concerning the Pollini link from YouTube in 'Schubert's last sonatas':
- Admittedly, since there was no copyright violation in my country which has very rigorous restrictions concerning that point, I did not check explicitly whether in the USA or the UK this would be different. Inspite of the YouTube's staff final agreement to accept this very long Audio of the Vienna performance as a Video (usually only 10 Minutes or shorter), this noncheck of mine of a possible copyright violation in the USA, Canada or the UK was a definite fault, and if you were true I herewith thank you for the reversion and will rigorously follow your 'not to ...' advice in all cases in future. Sorry! - Nonetheless, in the Wikipedia rules concerning the "case-to-case inclusion or noninclusion of Youtube links to the external links, an explicit and most visible hint to the fact should be added to the Wikipedia rules that a no-copyright violation in a particular state does not automatical imply a non-violation also in the US or the UK. If possible, please take care of that. -- Again with regards, Meier99 (talk) 11:42, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Fixing Vandalism edit
Thanks for your input - I wasn't aware that there was any protocol regarding reverting vandalism. I was, however, expecting to see a 'revert vandalism' button or some such so made do with what I could when I couldn't find it! You'll note I'm only an occasional Wikipedian and only edit when I spot something untoward or add something of interest to me! Having read the revert help page, it does seem to me to ba a rather convoluted way of reverting. Perhaps the reason I missed it?!
Thanks again. Fenners (talk) 11:09, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Adminship Process Interview
Dear Graham87,
My name is Jake Crawford and I am a student at Michigan State University working on an exploration of the Wikipedia adminship process. I am posting here to ask if you would be willing to answer a few questions about your experiences being a Wikipedia administrator.
Would you possibly have the time for a ~30 minute Skype interview some time in the next week? The interview is for a Wiki-Project Management class at MSU and is completely anonymous. While we would be using your Wikipedia user name to keep track of responses, your name will not be used in any of our reports.
If you are able to speak with me, please respond or email me at crawf279msu.edu to schedule a time. I would greatly appreciate your input and time.
Thank you!

Alt text
Graham, may I trespass on your time to ask for your opinion on alt text? Seeing on your user page that you are blind I hope you won't find it tiresome if I ask for a steer on what is most helpful in alt text. Some users think it correct to add long and detailed descriptions of the image; I incline to keep the alt text as short as I can. If your preferred method of access to Wikipedia includes alt text, may I ask for your guidance on what is actually helpful to a blind user? Best wishes. Tim riley (talk) 17:29, 31 March 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you - that's most helpful advice, which I'll make sure to follow. Best wishes. Tim riley (talk) 11:55, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
Passion for peace
My preparation for the Holy Week was a translation of a table of the movements of Bach's St Matthew Passion, found on de. Now a friend noticed about the background colours: "Using colour that way isn't a good approach; it's lost on the blind and on things like Google, causes difficulties for people with various forms of colour blindness or a need for best contrast due to other vision issues, and it messes up the edit box something fierce. Black, white, and grey is goodness. Lurid colours are for advertising (cf lipstick)". I would like to change it, what's your advice? I would like to change to something showing very clearly where choir I, II, "both" and "both in unison" are active, four different modes that means. This includes the soloists, for Bach there was soprano I, soprano II etc. Perhaps two columns, connected where both? The movements with "both in unison" should stand out most. Something else I would like to show more clearly is where a chorale is present, whether as a cantus firmus, a chorale fantasia, in an aria or a four-part setting. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:43, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks for your comment. Please look again, I inserted an extra column for everything connected to the Gospel, which includes the turbae, so in a way they would not need a colour, if chorus in that column it's turba. What do you think? Should it be explained? - Dr. Blofeld supplied three articles on poets over night! I read there: "Mir hat die Welt trüglich gericht't" (The world has judged me deceitfully), can't help thinking of some friends, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:58, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Australian Paralympic Swim Team
Hi there - hope all is well. I've been away from Wikipedia for a few weeks and am just getting back into it after a busy time at work. I created a draft article on the Australian Paralympic Swim Team and submitted it for review. It came back as declined due to copyright violations. I'm wondering if you can have a look for me and help me with it? Or should I refer it to the help desk? I have tried to contact the reviewer with questions but have not received a reply. It seems to be mainly around the first sentence which I am happy to change but I can't seem to access my article to edit it. I got the information from the APC website - as it turns out, this is the exact same wording as on the IPC site. My wording is different to these sites and I have provided a reference to the APC site but I may need to change it further. My article is located here: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Australian Paralympic Swim Team Appreciate any help you can provide thank you Melissa Carlton (talk) 09:00, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Graham, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I have to admit I was a taken aback when the article was declined - I put so much time into the research! I guess I'll need to make some changes to the first sentence and resubmit the article and see what the next reviewer thinks. Not sure what other options are available. I haven't heard back from the reviewer but I think next time I'll go straight to creating an article rather than working on a draft. Thanks again Melissa Carlton (talk) 09:37, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, I changed the first sentence and once I got started I couldn't help myself and added a bit more detail to the general intro with details about Matt Cowdrey. I'll pause for a bit and see what the reviewer says when he gets back to me. I would love to list all of the team members that have represented Australia - the IPC records only show medallists so I was hoping that people might be able to add information. I do have a list of Sydney 2000 swimmers tucked away that I can use as a reference. At this point I can only find reference to one swimmer at the 1960 Paralympics - Daphnee Cenney.Melissa Carlton (talk) 10:14, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks!

Thanks for pointing out English variants
You recently posted on my talk page asking me not to change words from one English variant to another.
First, I would like to thank you for being polite (I honestly was a little hot-headed at first and wanted to start a flame war against you).
Secondly, I would like to thank you for pointing out that I shouldn't change words to another English variant.
Lastly, I wanted to say it was actually an honest mistake that I made (I never knew focussed was an actual English word; I thought it was a typo).
Thank you, and keep it up! :)

Thank you for improving the Joan Armatrading article
Thank you for improving the article on Joan Arrmatrading after my edits to the article yesterday (Wednesday 3 May). I must say that I think the article is a lot better presented now. I had not realised that her programme on guitar favourites had had its earliest broadcast in 2009! I see that you removed the bit on her appearance on The One Show - I can assure you that she was on the programme (I saw it myself yesterday) and I can let you know should I manage to find any sources for this information. I've got another question about histmerges. I did another one, Yarmouth (CDP), Maine, and everything looks pretty good to me. The only problem is that the second earliest diff in the history looks a bit off because it's a redirect. I've encountered your work now twice in the NewPagesFeed Patrol (specifically Animal Farm and Andromeda (mythology)). I see 2 options, changing the importer script to mark as patrolled, or go back with your account and click the "mark as patrolled" so that they don't show up in the NPFeed list. Could you withhold from doing more imports until this is resolved with the New Pages Feed as your process as it exists creates more work for the New Pages Patrollers? Thanks Hasteur (talk) 13:15, 8 June 2012 (UTC)
A kitten for you!
Thank you for the work on Marge Kõrkjas. The copy edit was really well done, especially considering the level of random sourcing I used, and the problems I had in dealing with translation. (The program gave the local currency as Euros, translated her last name to rush, and translated Paralympics as Olympics.) Beautiful work. :D It has now been nominated for DYK.

- Yes, I agree. Having an Estonian speaker would make it much better. On the list of things I did not want to do today, take an article about an Estonian Parlaympian to DYK. :) Your copy edit is much appreciated. Heard good things about your Wikinews contributions too. :) --LauraHale (talk) 09:27, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
Your edits!
Hello, hope I didn't start something by removing located in pleonasms. Not particularly ugly, but they do go when I am editing an article for any other reason. Cheers Crusoe8181 (talk) 09:53, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
Cape Sorell
Thanks for that - it is still about 4 articles wanting to break out of that - now that trove is here it might just be possible - when it first was edited it was hard to unravel all different things - the waverider bouy, the lighthouse, the horse tram, and the horrible little gap known as hells gates, have been there on a boat on a very calm day - would not want to be there in weather like we have in perth at the moment... Re: Tech Report
Oh, good point about the "now"s, I've updated the preload template I use. I've also copied in Rcsprinter, who handles the BRfA stuff, but I'll try to keep an eye out for it too. Incidentally, dates on Tech reports are conventionally mdy, although I appreciate that's never particularly obvious. Regards, - Jarry1250 [Deliberation needed] 09:56, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia Help Survey
Hi there, my name's Peter Coombe and I'm a Wikimedia Community Fellow working on a project to improve Wikipedia's help system. At the moment I'm trying to learn more about how people use and find the current help pages. If you could help by filling out this brief survey about your experiences, I'd be very grateful. It should take less than 10 minutes, and your responses will not be tied to your username in any way.
Thank you for your time,

DYK for Marge Kõrkjas
On 18 June 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Marge Kõrkjas, which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Estonian Paralympian Marge Kõrkjas was awarded 100,000 krooni (about 6,400 euros) from the government following the 2004 Summer Paralympics? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Marge Kõrkjas. You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Saudi Arabia women's national football team
Hi. I'd like to take Saudi Arabia women's national football team to WP:GAN now that it has survived an AFD. Understanding the team doesn't actually exist but there is a fair amount of coverage on its non-existence, could you please give the article a good copy edit before I nominate it? :) --LauraHale (talk) 00:05, 19 June 2012 (UTC)
Nazim Erdem
No problem! :) The paragliding fact in Nazim Erdem was interesting, sources were available so it was easy enough to get it DYK length. You did most of the work on it. :) Good work. :) --LauraHale (talk) 20:54, 19 June 2012 (UTC)
apert.org
Hello
Graham87,
I am responding to your question: which page on Apert.org contains the figure 165000 and it is the "what is Apert Syndrome/Definition".
Here is the paragraph from the Sear's site "www.apert.org"
Apert Syndrome is a genetic defect and falls under the broad classification of craniofacial/limb anomalies. It can be inherited from a parent who has Apert, or may be a fresh mutation. It occurs in approximately 1 per 160,000 to 200,000 live births. Apert syndrome is primarily characterized by specific malformations of the skull, midface, hands, and feet. The skull is prematurely fused and unable to grow normally; the midface (that area of the face from the middle of the eye socket to the upper jaw) appears retruded or sunken; and the fingers and toes are fused together in varying degrees. Apert syndrome is named for the French physician who first described it, E. Apert, in 1906. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tweissberg (talk • contribs) 22:53, 19 June 2012 (UTC)
Apert Syndrome from Seattles Childrens hospital
Apert Syndrome in Children
Graham, you do see the larger figure ( 160.000) in the article relating to children born with the condition. I am myself the parent of such a child, and am confident the larger figure is the more accurate. Are you personally familiar with Apert Syndrome?
Apert syndrome is a very rare condition estimated to occur in one of 45,000 to 160,000 live births. Apert syndrome is an autosomal dominant condition, meaning that only one parent needs to have an abnormal gene for the child to inherit the disease. The children of a person with Apert syndrome have a 50% chance of passing this mutation on to their children. In most cases, Apert syndrome arises from a sporadic or spontaneous mutation, meaning that the parents are unaffected and that the child is affected as a result of a new mutation or defect in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) gene, which is on chromosome number 10. Increased paternal age has been noted to be a risk factor for Apert syndrome. Males and females are equally affected. Mutations in the FGFR2 gene also cause other craniofacial malformations such as Crouzon syndrome. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tweissberg (talk • contribs) 23:03, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Kyrra Grunnsund
Hi Graham, I came across Kyrra Grunnsund in the BLP PROD category, I know you have an interest in Australian Paralympians, so I wondered if you might be interested in saving it from deletion. I can't find any reliable sources myself, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. Australia at the Winter Olympics says that he was the first official competitor in the Winter Paralympics for Australia, but the ref for that is a dead link. There's also info from a likely unreliable source that he was awarded a medal of the Order of Australia.[1] Good luck! Quasihuman (talk • contribs) 15:08, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
- I don't mind at all Graham, and good job saving that article from deletion! Quasihuman (talk • contribs) 11:20, 22 June 2012 (UTC)
Question you might be able to help with
Hi Graham. I responded to your post at User talk:Tweissberg and having taken a glance at your userpage, I thought you might have some valuable input on a post I was involved with at the help desk. I don't know that it's a major issue at all, but I like to follow-up when the opportunity presents itself. Please refer to Wikipedia:Help desk/Archives/2012 June 14#What code does media wiki use for bold and italics or where would I go to find out. Any thoughts? Thanks.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 17:28, 21 June 2012 (UTC)
Kyrra Grunnsund
Hi. I nominated the above article for DYK. If you're copyediting it, can you please make sure it stays longer than 1,500 characters of prose so it stays eligible? :) Also woot! More DYK credits for you and the new contributor. :D --LauraHale (talk) 13:02, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

Could you please hold off on editing the Ellie Cole page until I'm done going through it and copyediting? It makes it very difficult to review the article when it's changing in the middle of my review. Also, this is an encyclopedia and "so" is not an informal transition that is not appropriate for higher level prose. Canadian Paul 14:19, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
- Either of those words would be fine, personally I feel that consequently would be better but whatever. Anyhow, I'm done for now, thanks for waiting! Edit away! Canadian Paul 14:35, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
- Kudos on your solution to the "and so" problem. I just noticed that there seem to be two concurrent GA Reviews for Cole, which is probably why you and I tend to be at cross-purposes at times with the article! Canadian Paul 23:45, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
