Many times Warnings of manual of Styles

I haven't been warned many times since May 15. I was making good-faith edits (It was not grossly inappropriate per the relevant Manual of Style.) at the 2004 Summer Paralympics article. I was 76 years older than you. 99.229.41.79 (talk) 11:40, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Request to review Neonatal bowel obstruction

Thanks for continually reviewing the articles that I have contributed to. Meanwhile, I have created the article Neonatal bowel obstruction and have significantly contributed to it. I would insist you to review it. The article requires further improvements and you can definitely contribute to it as well. DiptanshuTalk 03:37, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Pigiz

Hi Graham, I've only now discovered the talk page.... Well as it happens I'm a bit slow to realize how things works on the net. I just wanted to thank you for having written on my talk page, that I've just discovered, about the work I did on Cathy Berberian. Thank you. As you have seen I've added just a few words on the Dvd section I've created yesterday. What I wrote previously was just too much, sorry. :-) But I do hope that at least the year the series was produced and the title of the part 5 concerning Berberian will be mantained. Many thanks again. Ciao. Pigiz — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pigiz (talkcontribs) 16:22, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Cathy Berberian

Hi Graham, yes now it sounds much better :-) I'm simply going to take away a very small thing: it's "A thousand and one voice", "one voice" singular, which is "una voce" in Italian. I'll take away the final "s". Ciao. :-) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pigiz (talkcontribs) 10:31, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

1,000

Yes indeed it is "one thousand" and I've already substituted with it your "1,000". It's better the word, don't you think? Well my English needs some improvement.... :-) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pigiz (talkcontribs) 14:56, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

1,000 again....

Now I understand better. Then it is "A thousand and a voice" the Italian meaning of "Mille e una voce" is that in a single voice there are also one thousand different voices, and that is what the composer Luciano Berio said about the voice of Cathy Berberian, hence the title. So can I take away that 1,000 now and replace it with the exact version that you already suggested in your previous message and I overlooked? Sorry about all this but as I've already written my English needs some adjustement..... :-) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pigiz (talkcontribs) 15:23, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

sorry

I've told you I'm a bit slow to undersdtand things, especially if they are in another language, is that correct now, the signature, I mean? Let me know, please? Buona notte to you too. :-) Pigiz (talk) 15:27, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

Classic 100 Countdown

Hi Graham,

Can you help with Classic 100 Music in the Movies (ABC)? We are missing our expert User:GFHandel. He has retired! Whiteghost.ink (talk) 00:46, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, Graham. I was struggling with the markup and of course, it all moves on very quickly. Thanks especially for solving that footnote problem. I just changed the sequence of columns so that film came before work because the film was the more important component so I put it second (after the composer).
Check out the music - unsurprisingly, many pieces are very dramatic and others quite moving. You might make some new favourites there, although many of the films use excerpts from already well-known pieces. Whiteghost.ink (talk) 01:35, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

VPP fix

Hi Graham. Thanks for all your years of service volunteering here at Wikipedia. I saw you tried to fix my sig at VPP. I appreciate the help. I should note, however, that it wasn't a sig ~~~~ in the traditional sense. It was a timestamp ~~~~~ for RFC bot (talk · contribs), which it uses to determine when to add/remove the {{rfc}} template and also to determine what goes in to the summary listings at WP:RFC. I've put it back as a timestamp for obvious reasons and thought it would be courteous to leave you a note about it. Best. 64.40.54.12 (talk) 06:49, 9 June 2013 (UTC) p.s. could you reply here as I have a dynamic IP and may not see a reply on my talk page. Thanks.

Translation - > Requests for page importation

Note by importing administrator: Not done; either write the translation as an actual article or put it in your userspace. Graham87 16:39, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Your answer on Wikipedia:Requests for page importation does not surprise me at all.
What surprised me was that I was guided to the "Request for page importation" when I started to look for ways to have a translated article. Thus I gave it a try, its a failure. Something is wrong in the guidelines for translated articles. I am sure some people devouted much time to help translate pages. But I did not find the proper ways. Sure enough I could just write a new article with all formating and add it to the English Wikipedia (I did that for Alfred Ilg). Could you give me a hint for a machine helped translation - sure enough I have to edit the final product by hand. Teeschmid (talk) 20:36, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Regarding this, you may be interested to know that I discussed the matter with him. As noted in that discussion on his talk page, one of his problematic editing styles is that he substantially duplicates article content...including a whole article into another article. Also, if you reply to this, I'd prefer that you reply here on your talk page as to keep the discussion in one spot. Flyer22 (talk) 03:42, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Chuck Smith merge

Hi. Because I have Chuck Smith (pastor) on my watchlist, I saw your various deletions and moves. However, it is not at all clear to me what you actually did. It seems to have something to do with merging the talk page with that of User:Chuck SMITH. However, it seems quite clear to me that the two are not the same person (the user graduated from college in 2001 and works on video games and Esperanto, while the article subject has been a pastor since 1947), though there are a couple early messages on User talk:Chuck SMITH from tbc and from Wesley that apparently think that they are.

Anyway, I'd appreciate it if you could explain what you did. Thanks, --BlueMoonlet (t/c) 19:56, 25 June 2013 (UTC)

P.S. Go ahead and reply here. I like to have my conversations all in one place.

They're most definitely not the same person, but the Wikipedia user Chuck Smith edited in the days when Wikipedia had no namespaces, so his user page was at the title "Chuck Smith". Here's a copy of it from the Nostalgia Wikipedia. Its history was later moved to Chuck Smith (pastor). That is why I decided to merge some of the early edits of the talk page about the pastor with User talk:Chuck Smith. I actually did a similar operation on the article several years ago. Respect

I hope this doesn't come across as patronizing, because it's certainly not meant to be - your technical ability never ceases to astonish me.

@Scott Martin: Thank you very much for the kind words. Graham87 02:31, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Hello, please don't move pages by cut and paste, as you did at Dryden (disambiguation). It fragments the page history, making it more difficult to determine who wrote what. If you can't rename a page yourself with the move function, add {{db-move}} to the target title and an admin will delete it to make way for the page move. I've fixed the history at the Dryden disambiguation page, but if you have done other cut and paste moves in the past, let me know and I will fix them as well. Graham87 06:16, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

You left the above message on my talk page about this one.
Sorry - but all I can say is "it weren't me, mister!", as you will notice if you have a another look at the "history" tab.
Looking at all the work you had to do to restore the status quo I appreciate why you left the message, but honest, it really wasn't me! I suggest you contact the real culprit. --Soundofmusicals (talk) 07:37, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
@Soundofmusicals: Yes, it was you who did the cut and paste move. The action was probably a good idea; the method was not. Graham87 08:12, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
With all due respect I can't even work out when or where I ever moved this page - neither of the two links in your post above are at all helpful - did this happen recently or a fair while ago? (like September last year?). Or are the "histories" still rather misleading, even after all your effort to get them back on track?
The only recent edit I did I immediately self-reverted when I realised it was unnecessary. All this involved was a bracketed "(especially)" before THE John Dryden's name (the which I cut myself as I realised there was little or no point to it). I must admit that I have reached the age where I no longer feel any real confidence in my memories of even what I did this morning - much less a good nine months ago; and in any case there seems little point in arguing the point - especially as you are (if I understand you correctly) not accusing me of doing anything "naughty", but only doing something clumsily. The worthwhile point is that "Dryden" on its own redirects to THE Dryden (John Dryden the poet) - and that this has a hatnote referring to the dab page (Dryden (disambiguation). "Dryden" going straight to a dab is almost as bad as "Beethoven", or "Shakespeare", or "Chaucer" going to a dab. The man is infinitely more famous than anyone else called Dryden. If I'm right - no need to apologise; if you're right - sorry, but I didn't mean to, honest. I may be a senile old codger but I don't do nothing naughty on purpose, not here anyway. --Soundofmusicals (talk) 09:27, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
You moved the page last September; both the links above show your page move – the first link is where you moved the text and the second link is where you made a redirect to the author's page – but I appreciate that might be a bit hard to spot because of all the history switching I've done). Fair enough about the move though ... some people start disambiguation pages in crazy places and problems like that can remain unfixed for years and years, as you've seen. Apology accepted ... I know it's not always obvious what to do in situations like that. Graham87 09:36, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Restoring missing edits to Derek Ross's user page.

Gee whiz, Graham. Way to make me feel old. I knew I'd been editing Wikipedia a long time but when Graham87 restores missing edits from 2001 to your user page, it brings it home. Vuly Trampolines

Hi Graham, thanks for bringing the conflict of interest point over the page to my attention. I am a friend of an employee of the company, certainly, but this is not the main reason for me creating the page. There has been a lot of media interest in the company over recent weeks (on Channel 10 news, articles in the Courier Mail, Weekend Australian etc) and therefore I read the wiki article on notability and have assumed this makes the company notable enough for inclusion. I had a look at their existing page which was deleted and I agree was completely promotional. However, I also note that other trampoline pages like Springfree Trampoline are written MUCH more promotionally than the one I wrote! Do you see a way we can have a page on Vuly Trampolines, do you believe that national media interest gives it notability? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stoddski (talkcontribs) 12:23, 29 June 2013 (UTC)

Question

I see you've deleted an article I created. It would have been nice if you'd given me a heads-up. I could have explained any concerns you might have. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. Is this usual procedure on Wikipedia? Malke 2010 (talk) 02:29, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

What are you doing to the article and why? Are you allowed to make such drastic changes without any discussion? Malke 2010 (talk) 02:36, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
Do you know anything about the subject? And having the acronym is pertinent and I don't see where it's not allowed on Wikipedia. Malke 2010 (talk) 02:46, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
You've put the article to a redirect and wiped out my credit for having created the article. You've put it to a redirect that was in the section to HPS in the hantavirus article. I've asked another admin to take a look at what you've done. Malke 2010 (talk) 03:16, 8 July 2013 (UTC)
It matters to me as I'm sure it would matter to any volunteer editor. The redirects created should just go to the article I've created. The redirect histories will be there but I will still have credit for creating the article. Also, you've not answered my question. Do you know anything about the subject? Just because you're an admin, doesn't mean you aren't required to discuss matters first. You've taken it in hand to just do something that wasn't causing any problems on wikipedia. You were clearly aware that I'd just created the article, you could have opened a discussion on the talk page. This seems an abuse of the tools. Malke 2010 (talk) 03:32, 8 July 2013 (UTC)

Got your ping

Hey, Graham, just wanted to let you know that I got your ping and read your message in the edit history. You're welcome for what little I did; I'm not too happy about it either, but as I think we've all said by now, there are bigger fish to fry. :) It wouldn't have been out of policy to delete the redirect history and then just move the page to the new title without a histmerge; db-move does cover that. I liked your solution better, as I don't see any real reason to delete the history, but doing so seemed like the easiest way to end what was really an absurd argument (that was starting to get nasty) and not outside of policy, so I figured it was for the best. Thanks, Writ Keeper  13:11, 9 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Graham87, Wow! Since 2011? How did you do THAT. I'm fascinated. Please explain. Thanks.

Red links refer to pp. that don't exist. Pls explain how they help WP grow. Don't understand. It seems more logical to me that if someone thinks a person or thing deserves an article, and is motivated enough to begin one, they should go for it. I was told when I started getting involved with WP (and as you, learned, I read a lot of stuff in WP) that red links were "faulty" and should be de-linked. I also find that most of the really excellent, well-cited pages have no red links. Anyway, look forward to your response.--Classicfilmbuff (talk) 21:42, 14 July 2013 (UTC)

The guideline WP:REDLINK says that page name should be redlinked "to indicate that a page will be created soon or that an article should be created for the topic because the subject is notable and verifiable". The guideline further says: "do not overlink in the mainspace solely for use as an article creation guide. Instead, editors are encouraged to consider Write the article first, or to use WikiProjects or user spaces to keep track of unwritten articles. Articles should not have red links to topics that are not likely to have an article". In short, page names that are unlikely to get an article any time soon should not be redlinked unless you plan to write it yourself. -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:50, 14 July 2013 (UTC)
Hi there, so if it's controversal, why would you you decide unilaterally to go back 2 years and revert all my edits of which, let's say, half of WP editors would approve? And certainly, many, if not most, of the red links I removed (like titles of obscure films) referred to "topics that are not likely to have an article." Just seems like a strange thing to do. To follow guidelines, it seems, one should have to analyze each instance and make an individual judgment about whether the subject deserves a red link or not. Personally, I agree with Ssilvers' argument. Oh well, I'm not invested in this, really just curious. And wish I hadn't wasted all that time trying to clean up articles in this way!--Classicfilmbuff (talk) 20:53, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
Hi Graham, thanks for educationg me on the redlinks. I'll now take your opinion into account if I consider de-linking in the future. Not sure what you mean by undoing indiscriminately but whatever. Some good tweaking on the GG p. Don't see the reason for all of them but generally good stuff.--Classicfilmbuff (talk) 16:55, 16 July 2013 (UTC)

Activating Africa

Dear Graham87

You have put your name down as being interested in attending the the Activating Africa panel that will take place on the Sunday the 11 August in the Jockey Club Auditorium (just before the Closing Plenary). If you are working on a project related to Africa, please see the email below. If you are just interested to attend, then we look forward to seeing you there!

The idea behind the panel is to set out the need, see what is going on across the continent, and discuss what is possible in the immediate future. Here is the submission page to refresh your memory. There are two problems that this panel presents: One: there are too many stories that need to be told and discussed that make it difficult to give full representation of the landscape in 90 minutes; Two: given the costs involved, and the scholarship system, there are not enough people from Africa attending Wikimania to make sure everything is covered, and all the people, ideas, thoughts and realities heard.

With this in mind we want to shake expectations and make the Activating Africa panel a version of Pecha Kucha [www.pechakucha.org]. This means that 6 presenters present 20 slides, with 20 seconds per slide (this works out to just over 6 minutes per presentation with another 3 mins for questions for each presentation). The joy of this format is that we can ask people who are not at Wikimania to send through pre-recorded presentations (and, possibly, link up with them via skype to answer questions). Tech-willing, we will also investigate if there is a way we can make the whole session live. This format extends the conversation beyond just the people who managed to get scholarships to attend. As an extension of the panel, we will also create an Activating Africa website that allows for the conversation to extend beyond Wikimania, and back to Africa.

Here is the structure for the session:

  • 10 minute intro – setting the stage about why Africa needs Wikipedia, and especially why Wikipedia needs Africa.
  • 6 x 20 slide x 20 sec presentations of projects or wiki-relevant experience that have or are taking place across Africa.
  • 20 minutes debate on the future of engagement in Africa – this will include 2 minute (max.) presentations about projects that are planned or ideas for future projects.

If you wish to present a project you are working on that is based in or relevant to Africa, or an idea for the future, please can you submit your topic via this form:

The deadline for submissions is the 31st July. Speakers will be notified on the 2nd August. All cyber or remote presentations need to be sent to Isla [info@wikiafrica.net] by Friday, 9th August.

We look forward to receiving your submission if you are interested; and please do feel free to share your ideas, suggestions and thoughts on this with us. Also, be sure to send this out to as large a network as possible so that we can make sure Africa is truly represented. please do email Isla on info [at] wikiafrica dot net Islahaddow (talk) 12:06, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

role button

Hi Graham, I'm not sure how accessible the following site is to you, I fear it will be poor, but there should be an HTML example with 3 tables in the 4th quadrant. I'm curious if the 2nd example is keyboard accessible (should be, but has no action) and still identifies as a header as well. I'd also like to know if the 3rd example is recognized as both a header and a button or (as I presume it will) as just a header. Worst case scenario the 3rd table might register as none of those, which would be really bad. I would prefer to implement the 3rd table. If table 3 behaves according to the worst case scenario, I would implement table 2. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 20:25, 5 August 2013 (UTC)

Hmm, that truly is a shame. Once again it seems that progressive enhancement is not possible and I need to go with a graceful degradation strategy. I have updated the case to add actual events to the headers, just as with table sorter, but instead they will present Alert screens. The intent is that it should be clear to you that the header doubles as button (to change sortorder) and that using enter will present the alert. All three headers have these JS events. On table 1, it should be a click only event, that should not be executable to you with pure keyboard access (requires click), unless you have configured your JAWS to map all clickhandlers automatically. Table 2 should be able to trigger the alert from keyboard, but it might not identify itself as a button, just as a header. The third table should present itself as a header with as secondary role button, but I think we can conclude this likely isn't properly supported by JAWS. Thanks for helping out, i'm going to be slowly documenting these kinds of things for developers on mw:Accessibility_guide_for_developers. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 09:20, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
OK, the header in table 2 should be focusable and thus reachable with tab, whereas the definition of table 1 is not required to be reachable with tab. So if the click action is accessible for you there, then it is indeed smart interpretation of JAWS, but it might be presented differently by other screenreaders. I also realized I made a critical error in table 3, by using "header" where I should have used "columnheader" as the primary role value, I wonder if it makes a difference in the updated example. I won't be at Wikimania unfortunately, but good luck ! —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 12:00, 6 August 2013 (UTC)
This has now been merged into the codebase and can be previewed on our beta labs before it is deployed. After a bit of practice with this, I think I'll be trying to add some more ARIA sugar. I'm going to be adding labels to the various navigation landmarks, implement the aria tablist controls for the Special:Preferences page and then take on the collapsible elements in the navigation landmark and the collapsible elements. I'm not sure how long that is going to take and how enthusiastic other developers will be about it, but I think it is important, and using VoiceOver I can already identify some areas that would greatly benefit from it. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 09:27, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi Graham. I don't believe you've ever actually edited this page, but it seems only fair to notify you that I've nominated the Nostalgia Wikipedia article for deletion. I hope this isn't seen as canvassing; it's rare that we have the luxury of one of our own being the most knowledgeable person there is on a given topic, so I think your input (either to the discussion, or improvements to the article itself) would be quite helpful. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 23:49, 12 August 2013 (UTC)

A Million Ways to Die in the West

REPOST FROM MQS TALK PAGE Do you think you could perform a history merge? A Million Ways to Die in the West was originally here. The whole issue with User:Captain Assassin! is currently under scrutiny here and it makes sense for the history at A Million Ways to Die in the West (film) to be merged. Having an unnecessary redirect also isn't necessary, which is why I request this history merge. Rusted AutoParts 21:01, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Elevator music may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry, just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
  • Some [video game]]s have used elevator music to add comedic effects into the game. One example is in ''[[Metal Gear

Split article?

A bit music for you: Wolfgang Katschner and his Lautten Compagney played a great concert! I found that en-WP has the conductor, whereas de-WP has the orchestra, and - perhaps a little fast, moved the conductor to the orchestra. Now we have wrong cats, BLP etc., sorry. I almost feel we should have two articles, and the conductor should have the older history. Can you do that? I remember you worked miracles ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:00, 18 August 2013 (UTC)

Kurt Gödel

Hi Graham, hope you made it back from Hong Kong safely. Just curious: I noticed the inconsistent byte count of the first two revisions of Kurt Gödel in 2001---Does that fall into your category of interest, and can it be fixed? Cheers, Pgallert (talk) 09:49, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

No need

I was looking at recent changes and I discovered that someone had created the page Destkop Wallpaper, which appears to contain gibberish (to me). What should I do? George8211 (talk | contribs) 16:55, 22 August 2013 (UTC)

Someone's made the page into a redirect. Solved. George8211 (talk | contribs) 17:22, 22 August 2013 (UTC)
@George8211: yep, sounds fine to me as well. Graham87 01:06, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

Ministry of Synonyms

Hello there. + Graham87 (talk)

Very nice to meet you.

I sort of put the clue in the job title. I was originally examining alternative spellings to Wikipedia and Encyclopedia. My original intention was to insert an entry such as:

Wikipaedia: A classic contemporary English spelling and synonym of Wikipedia.

Originally, there was no entry or redirection but being half-Scottish I found these spellings on the Scots Leid pages. Subsequent searching on Google and Wikimedia (with combinations that included Britanicca) led me to the Takeover Entry. I had included Encyclopaedia Britanicca due to it's Scottish historical roots. Hope this didn't bore you too much and feel free to edit my reply... Yours Jimmy.Plus (talk) 12:32, 24 August 2013 (UTC)

Hello again. +

Thanks.

In view of my cross-border situation and the potential of a humourous "re-takeover", I would have to recommend an alternative entry as follows:

Wikipaedia: A traditional Scottish and English spelling and synonym of Wikipedia.

I would also add the following references:

Reference 1. The History of the Encyclopaedia.
Reference 2. The History of The Encyclopaedia Britanicca.
Reference 3. The History of the English Language.
Reference 4. The History of the Scottish Language.
Reference 5. Scots Leid.
Reference 6. Wikipaedia.
Reference 7. Creating your own Synonyms (Ministry of Synonyms).

The re-takeover is complete...we are then only dealing with artefacts. But then I'm biased. I love Wikipedia... Yours Jimmy.Plus (talk) 22:32, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

missed

Thank you for moving our sad list, which started as a private area of mourning, to a better name. Before making it more public, please read it's talk, with the objections to missing banned users. We do. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:32, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

Hi Gerda, thanks, but I wasn't going to take any more action on that list, if that's what you meant by "making it more public"? Whether certain banned users are or aren't on the list is not my concern. Graham87 06:49, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
Well, I wasn't too precise, the "more" was wrong. Missing Wikipedians doesn't list banned users, we do (actually that's how it started), in silent opposition ;) - So I wonder if it should appear on the other list at all. - See also the last topics on my talk. I felt "sick" (in one heading) when I - not familiar with arbcom proceedings - was sure we had another one. The sickness is over, the case is not. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:16, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
I don't see why it shouldn't be noted on the main list; The see also section of a project-space page is often a good place to list alternative views. Graham87 08:49, 31 August 2013 (UTC)
