Matt Olsen undeletion

[edit]

Hi, if Matt Olsen is in the news, can you find some refs for the entry, which currently has IMDB only? I can't find any, unless you're thinking of Matthew G. Olsen who is in the news. Cheers. Hairhorn (talk) 20:39, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Hairhorn:, you are correct, it is Matthew G. Olsen who is in the news. But he is not known as Matthew G. Olsen. He is known as "Matt Olsen", so when the article on Matt Olsen, the voice actor, is deleted, with no steps taken to help readers find the article on the notable counter-terrorism expert... well readers were not well served.
  • As I reminded everyone, elsewhere, WP:PROD says {{prod}} can only be used once, per article. You lapsed from this policy when you placed a second {{prod}}. The administrator who completed the deletion lapsed by not noticing your mistake.
  • I created Matt Olsen (disambiguation), it has an entry for Matt Olsen, actor. If that entry was to Matt Olsen (voice actor), a red-link, the entry could have a blue-link to the Sly Cooper article.
  • If you had raised your notability concerns at AFD, then when I went to expand the Matt Olsen article, when Matt Olsen, counter-terrorism expert was in the news again, and found a red-link, the "What Links Here" button would have taken me to the AFD discussion, where your nomination would have made clear that the article you were nominating for deletion was about Matt Olsen, the voice actor, not Matt Olsen, the counter-terrorism expert.
  • If you aren't noticing that articles you are {{prod}}ding were subject to an earlier {{prod}} you aren't giving those articles enough attention. If you don't look at the history of an article, how do you know that its current inadequate state isn't due to vandalism?
  • Please be more careful, in future. Geo Swan (talk) 04:55, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, sorry, please have a look at the relevant PROD policy, particularly the line "This [prodBLP] does not affect the regular prod process, which may still be used on BLPs, including BLPs from which the sticky prod has been legitimately removed". And I fail to see how readers are served by recreating the entry for a non-notable actor simply because an existing entry has a similar name. This calls for a redirect, non an unencyclopedic entry. Hairhorn (talk) 13:33, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am guessing you see yourself as a hard-working quality control volunteer? I am guessing you appreciate it when others praise your quality control efforts.
You write "And I fail to see how readers are served by recreating the entry for a non-notable actor simply because an existing entry has a similar name. This calls for a redirect, non an unencyclopedic entry."
I strongly agree with the section I put in bold. But consider, how was any good faith contributor to know that the deleted article on "Matt Olsen" was about a not particularly notable nobody -- not the highly notable counter-terrorism official? That, in my opinion, was largely on you. Other people made mistakes in handling the article about Matt Olsen, the voice actor, but, the way I see it, the most important mistakes were yours. So, I am going to repeat my encouragement to learn from this, and be more careful, in future.
When both the not particularly notable voice actor, and the counter-terrorism official were both generally known as Matt, there is no way the not particularly notable guy should have had pride of place, at Matt Olsen. There should have been a disambiguation page, disambiguating hatnotes, disambiguating redirects. The article you nominated for deletion should have been at Matt Olsen (actor), Matt Olsen (voice actor), Matt Olsen (Sly Cooper series), or reasonable equivalent.
