Reliable sources discussion

I've started a discussion about the OARDEC summary reports at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard#Reliability of US military summary reports. AfD for Mullah Rahmatullah

[edit]

The article Mullah Rahmatullah is up for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Mullah Rahmatullah. Fram (talk) 15:29, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Mullah Rahmatullah requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Richard Epstein

[edit]

Why did you move the page? Do you object if I move it back? He's by far the most notable Richard Epstein, and thus Wikipedia MOS conventions are that he should be at the Richard Epstein page rather than it being a redirect. THF (talk) 14:37, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I moved him because the previous disambiguation of "Richard Epstein" and "Richard A. Epstein", was inherently ineffective and confusing. Both men could be described as "Richard A. Epstein". And, among the links to these two individuals, about a dozen of them pointed to the wrong "Richard A. Epstein".
I created a disambiguation page, and piped about fifty links.
So, are you suggesting the disambiguation page should be at Richard A. Epstein (disambiguation)? Geo Swan (talk) 15:18, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
At the moment, my preference/recommendation would be (1) Richard A. Epstein (disambiguation) should redirect to Richard Epstein (disambiguation); (2) Richard A. Epstein should be moved to Richard Arnold Epstein or Richard Epstein (mathematician); and (3) Richard Allen Epstein should redirect to Richard Epstein using the current {{dablink}}. THF (talk) 15:27, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I had already moved Richard A. Epstein to Richard Arnold Epstein.
Your approach has the problem where people who only know the Mathematician will link to Richard Epstein, without realizing that that link is for the lawyer. The advantage to the current approach is that a periodic check of any articles that link directly to Richard Epstein were clearly made by individuals who weren't aware that there are two Richard Epsteins. The disadvantage to your approach is that periodic checks of the what links here button will provide a much longer list of articles to be checked. Geo Swan (talk) 19:39, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's a problem for any same-named person where one is several times more common than the other, but isn't a celebrity. E.g., Michael Dobbs (which is the example in WP:DISAMB). The primary article is the law professor, who is linked to many more pages, not the mathematician, who is most notable under a pseudonym. The wikilinker is supposed to be checking their links to ensure that they're going to the right page. THF (talk) 20:46, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Dobbs example however is not a good match, as Richard A. Epstein gives the appearance of being sufficiently uncommon that worrying about disambiguation seems unnecessary.
Yes, contributors should check each wikilink they make, to double-check that it is to the appropriate page. But, realistically, they don't a significant fraction of the time. Pantograph and Pantograph (rail) are frequently confused. Pantographs used for powering rail vehicles are so much more common than the original use of pantographs. Every couple of months I check the "what links here" for pantograph, and find multiple instances that should have linked to pantograph (rail). Fixing these requires human judgment. Tonight I found over fifty instances. It took over an hour to fix them. Fixing the instances where someone doesn't check they have the correct Richard Epstein could also be time-consuming. This will be an order of magnitude less work if both Richard Epstein and Richard A. Epstein are redirects or disambiguation pages -- as then we know they were linked in error.
As to which one is the more notable, no offense but the current state of more links to Allen than Arnold may merely indicate that more lawyers have contributed to the wikipedia than mathematicians. Geo Swan (talk) 04:20, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
