Recent changes
- When searching for edits by change tags, e.g. in page history or user contributions, there is now a dropdown list of possible tags. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [1]
- Mentors using the Growth Mentor dashboard will now see newcomers assigned to them who have made at least one edit, up to 200 edits. Previously, all newcomers assigned to the mentor were visible on the dashboard, even ones without any edit or ones who made hundred of edits. Mentors can still change these values using the filters on their dashboard. Also, the last choice of filters will now be saved. [2][3]
- The user group
oversight
was renamedsuppress
. This is for technical reasons. You may need to update any local references to the old name, e.g. gadgets, links to Special:Listusers, or uses of NUMBERINGROUP.
Problems
- The recent change to the HTML of tracking changes pages caused some problems for screenreaders. This is being fixed. [4]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 March. It will be on all wikis from 3 March (calendar).
Future changes
- Working with templates will become easier. Several improvements are planned for March 9 on most wikis and on March 16 on English Wikipedia. The improvements include: Bracket matching, syntax highlighting colors, finding and inserting templates, and related visual editor features.
- If you are a template developer or an interface administrator, and you are intentionally overriding or using the default CSS styles of user feedback boxes (the classes:
successbox, messagebox, errorbox, warningbox
), please note that these classes and associated CSS will soon be removed from MediaWiki core. This is to prevent problems when the same class-names are also used on a wiki. Please let us know by commenting at phab:T300314 if you think you might be affected.

Administrators' newsletter – March 2022
News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2022).
|
|
- A RfC is open to change the wording of revision deletion criterion 1 to remove the sentence relating to non-infringing contributions.
- A RfC is open to discuss prohibiting draftification of articles over 90 days old.
- The deployment of the reply tool as an opt-out feature, as announced in last month's newsletter, has been delayed to 7 March. Feedback and comments are being welcomed at Wikipedia talk:Talk pages project. (T296645)
- Special:Nuke will now allow the selection of standard deletion reasons to be used when mass-deleting pages. This was a Community Wishlist Survey request from 2022. (T25020)
- The ability to undelete the talk page when undeleting a page using Special:Undelete or the API will be added soon. This change was requested in the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey. (T295389)
- Several unused discretionary sanctions and article probation remedies have been rescinded. This follows the community feedback from the 2021 Discretionary Sanctions review.
- The 2022 appointees for the Ombuds commission are Érico, Faendalimas, Galahad, Infinite0694, Mykola7, Olugold, Udehb and Zabe as regular members and Ameisenigel and JJMC89 as advisory members.
- Following the 2022 Steward Elections, the following editors have been appointed as stewards: AntiCompositeNumber, BRPever, Hasley, TheresNoTime, and Vermont.
- The 2022 Community Wishlist Survey results have been published alongside the ranking of prioritized proposals.
An arbitration case regarding Skepticism and coordinated editing has now closed and the final decision is viewable at the link above. The following remedies have been enacted:
- Rp2006 (talk · contribs) is warned against a battleground mentality and further incivility.
- Rp2006 is indefinitely topic banned from edits related to living people associated with or of interest to scientific skepticism, broadly construed. This topic ban may be appealed after six months have elapsed and every six months thereafter.
- A. C. Santacruz (talk · contribs) is reminded to remain collegial in editing and interacting with others.
- Roxy the dog (talk · contribs) is warned to remain collegial in editing and interacting with others.
- GSoW is advised that a presence on English Wikipedia, perhaps as its own WikiProject or as a task force of WikiProject Skepticism, will create more transparency and lessen some of the kinds of suspicion and conflict that preceded this case. It could also provide a place for the GSoW to get community feedback about its training which would increase its effectiveness.
- Editors are reminded that discretionary sanctions for biographies of living people have been authorized since 2014. Editors named in this decision shall be considered aware of these discretionary sanctions under awareness criterion 1.

Since you were the one who blocked Yazidis are not Kurds, I wanted to tell you that I suspect that the same sock has returned with Zazas are not Kurds. I would appreciate if you took a look at it. --Semsûrî (talk) 17:32, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

This sock appears to have returned [5]. Still removing content from their favorite article [6]. Restoring maps [7] [8]. Magherbin (talk) 01:48, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

Persistent disruption
A few months back, you blocked KIfanboy for abusing multiple accounts. Shortly after the block, this account appeared, which has many overlapping edits at the same articles, sometimes just a few hours apart. In addition, KIfanboy continues to ignore pleas from others to seek help with moves, which they keep bungling, leading to a drain on community resources with discussions like this one. Thought I'd run it by you first since you've looked at this account recently, thanks. --GoneIn60 (talk) 06:27, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- GoneIn60, yup, behavior and magic pixie dust both say they're the same person. Blocked again, indefinitely this time. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:02, 11 March 2022 (UTC)
Summary
Hello GeneralNotability! Apologies for sticking my nose in where I don't belong. However, I noticed something. When you revdel something under RD 5, it cites "Under other valid deletion policy" with a link to WP:DEL#REASON, however all the reasons there (except for the 2nd one) appear to refer to deletion of articles and not deletion of content with RD. I understand that there is WP:BEANS and WP:DENY (Deny applies mainly to vandals and not giving them attention, however really that concept could also be applied to something that may be revdel'd) however I'm not sure if this would really be the best palce to link to, unless I'm misunderstanding what it's saying. And it's not just the stuff you most recently rev del'd but every other time I"ve seen RD5 used. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 03:27, 11 March 2022 (UTC)
- Also, I apologize for the mess I caused. I had a lapse of better judgement (doesn't excuse me from what I Did) and in hindsight I probably shouldn't handle stuff like that when I'm tired and/or not at my best. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 04:57, 11 March 2022 (UTC)
Query
Hello, GeneralNotability,
I was puzzled by your message on Juggyevil's talk page that he wasn't under a checkuser block when the block notice states that he was blocked because he was found to be a sockpuppet and has operated multiple accounts. That says "checkuser" to me but I didn't want to discuss this on his talk page. Thanks for any clarification you can offer. Liz Read! Talk! 04:41, 11 March 2022 (UTC)
- Liz, it's a block made by a checkuser, but it isn't a checkuser block - CU blocks will always be explicitly called out as such (usually with the {{checkuserblock}} or {{checkuserblock-account}} templates in the block reason). Blocking for abuse of multiple accounts is something any admin can do. GeneralNotability (talk) 15:08, 11 March 2022 (UTC)
FYI
Hi, GeneralNotability. 65.94.138.239 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) reminds me strongly of Tyciol. You blocked the IP on the English Wikipedia, but he is still editing Wiktionary and Wikiquote.[10] Cheers, gnu57 14:21, 12 March 2022 (UTC)
Could you look at Talk:James Shupe as a functionary please?
Hey. I was wondering if you might be able to take a look at the situation over at Talk:James Shupe with your functionary hat on. User ElisaShupe says they've sent an email to the WMF for proving their identity. Would you be able to chase this up so that we can verify if changes are needed to the article? Thanks. Recent changes
- In the Wikipedia Android app it is now possible to change the toolbar at the bottom so the tools you use more often are easier to click on. The app now also has a focused reading mode. [11][12]
Problems
- There was a problem with the collection of some page-view data from June 2021 to January 2022 on all wikis. This means the statistics are incomplete. To help calculate which projects and regions were most affected, relevant datasets are being retained for 30 extra days. You can read more on Meta-wiki.
- There was a problem with the databases on March 10. All wikis were unreachable for logged-in users for 12 minutes. Logged-out users could read pages but could not edit or access uncached content then. [13]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 March. It will be on all wikis from 17 March (calendar).
- When using
uselang=qqx
to find localisation messages, it will now show all possible message keys for navigation tabs such as "View history". [14] - Access to Special:RevisionDelete has been expanded to include users who have
deletelogentry
anddeletedhistory
rights through their group memberships. Before, only those with thedeleterevision
right could access this special page. [15] - On the Special:Undelete pages for diffs and revisions, there will be a link back to the main Undelete page with the list of revisions. [16]
Future changes
- The Wikimedia Foundation has announced the IP Masking implementation strategy and next steps. The announcement can be read here.
- The Wikipedia Android app developers are working on new functions for user talk pages and article talk pages. [17]
Events
- The Wikimedia Hackathon 2022 will take place as a hybrid event on 20-22 May 2022. The Hackathon will be held online and there are grants available to support local in-person meetups around the world. Grants can be requested until 20 March.

Hello, I have decided to recreate a CSD'd local description of this file. My reasoning is explained on their talk here and was just wondering if I should note this action anywhere since I do not want to appear as if I am trying to hide any actions taken. Terasail[✉️] 20:45, 18 March 2022 (UTC)

New Mario Kleff user
Hi. Could you take a look at Draft:Mario Kleff? It's a brand-new user creating a new draft for a previously deleted article that was a subject of undisclosed COI, whose previous author you blocked last year. One edit doesn't exactly seem like grounds for an SPI, but maybe you'll have a better idea of how to deal with this. --Paul_012 (talk) 10:01, 23 March 2022 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) I also notice a new user had edited a related article (one of the few remaining related to MK, after several deletions) a few minutes after registering.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 00:54, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
- Paul_012, Rocknrollmancer, don't see anything that clearly ties this draft to the past versions other than the subject. Pretty clear puffery, of course, just not something I can easily tie back to the last group. GeneralNotability (talk) 00:59, 28 March 2022 (UTC)
