New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023

Hello Extraordinary Writ,

New Page Review queue April to June 2023

Backlog

Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.

Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.

Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.

You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.

Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).

Millat Times

@Extraordinary Writ hope you will be fine. I have prepared this article Draft:Millat Times can you give your feedback and suggestions if any changes require. Mh21production (talk) 15:31, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

Hello again Mh21production. A few things: First, make sure the draft is written neutrally. Phrases like Millat Times is known for its fair and fearless Journalism, committed to providing accurate, unbiased, and informative news and content to their viewers, and renowned for its effective reporting are a bit too opinionated for an encyclopedia article—try replacing them with basic factual statements. Second, you'll want to make sure more of the article is cited to reliable sources, particularly ones that aren't associated with Millat Times at all. If a given fact or event hasn't been mentioned in those kinds of sources, it probably isn't worth including. Finally, notability is a concern: an article about this site was previously deleted for lack of notability, and I'm still not seeing the in-depth coverage from multiple independent reliable sources that articles need. If you can find some articles in other trustworthy news outlets about Millat Times, that would be helpful; otherwise, it may not be noteworthy enough for an article at this time.
By the way, are you being paid to create this article (or any other article)? If you are, it's important to let us know so you can make the required disclosures. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 00:16, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your Response, no I am not getting paid for this or any other articles, I am writing these articles to help the community and promote truth and unbiased information to the world. Mh21production (talk) 11:08, 12 July 2023 (UTC)

MfD result

Concerning your close of the Lab leak essay MfD, did you consider the !votes that supported keeping but blanking the page? It seems reasonable to me that all delete !votes could plausibly be read as implying support for blanking, which would produce a super-majority for blanking. But we have an editor at the page insisting that your "no consensus" close means that not only the page must be kept but also its content must remain visible. Could you possibly clarify this aspect of your close? Thanks. Newimpartial (talk) 10:56, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi Newimpartial. Blanking was only mentioned by two editors out of ~40, so I can't really say the MfD reached a consensus one way or another on it, even if I use the "delete + blank" formula. My close certainly doesn't preclude blanking, but now that multiple editors have reverted, you probably shouldn't do it again without consensus, either on the talk page or (not that I would recommend this) in another MfD. As for "affirmative consensus to keep disputed content", I don't think WP:ONUS applies outside of mainspace, so the usual "preserve the status quo" WP:NOCON rule would apply, at least in my opinion. Please add to the Wikipedia Deletion review (The main reason: because there is no consensus on the AFD)

Hello! Dear Extraordinary Writ

I, as a Wikipedia user with the username "90AA123", am reaching out to you with a request. Question from YAKSH75 (11:26, 18 August 2023)

CAN WE MAKE ARTICLE ABOUT COMMEN PEOPLES --YAKSH75 (talk) 11:26, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello, YAKSH75, and welcome to Wikipedia! To be eligible for an article, a person needs to have received in-depth coverage from several reliable sources: books, news articles, trustworthy websites, etc. (See this page for more information.) If the person hasn't received this sort of coverage, unfortunately you won't be able to create an article about them. This can be a complicated rule to apply, so if there's a particular person you want to write about, let me know their name and I'd be happy to give you some additional feedback. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 01:01, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
HI Extraordinary Writ
Name of the person is Vaibhav Santosh Naik .Let me know abkut it if there is any possibilities to make this person's article on wikipedia.
Waiting for valuable relpay... YAKSH75 (talk) 06:44, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
Apologies for the delay, YAKSH75. So, as I said, we need reliable sources to talk about a person in detail before we can create an article about him. I spent some time searching the Internet for sources discussing Mr. Naik, but I wasn't able to find anything: he seems to be a fairly young musician who hasn't attracted much attention from the media yet. Unfortunately this does mean that it's too soon to for him to have an article at this time; if you do try to create one, it will almost certainly be deleted. Sorry if this is disappointing, but maybe there's another topic you'd be interested in writing about? Let me know if you have any more questions. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 06:49, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
HI Extraordinary Writ
Thanks for your valuable reply. If there is any query about anything I'll inform you.

HI Extraordinary Writ
Name of the person is Rishi Singh Let me know abkut it if there is any possibilities to make this person's article on wikipedia. Waiting for valuable relpay... YAKSH75 (talk) 06:00, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
Hello again YAKSH75. This is a somewhat trickier one because Singh did get a lot of news coverage from reliable sources when he won Indian Idol. Usually that would mean he'd be eligible for an article, but it's a little more complicated here since one of our guidelines discourages articles about people known for just one single event. It's possible that an article about Singh could survive, but I think deletion would probably be the most likely outcome. You can try creating an article if you want, though: the instructions are at Help:Your first article, and I can answer any questions you have about the process. Another (probably better) option would be to edit Indian Idol (Hindi TV series)#Season 13 to provide more information about Singh. That way, Wikipedia readers can still learn about him even if he doesn't have an article of his own. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 07:04, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

Question from Phenix912 on In-N-Out Burger (14:30, 27 August 2023)

Your article on In-N-Out has listed an incorrect store number. The second store opened was on Arrow Highway in Covina, not Azusa. I have emailed In-N-Out to confirm my information. If I am correct how can I update the article. I am registered member of Wikipedia. Or is there a way you can update this information. I look forward to a response. Thank you, Phenix Besl --Phenix912 (talk) 14:30, 27 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi Phenix912. Looks like you're right! The Wikipedia article originally had the correct information, but someone came along in 2018 and changed it (here's their edit). New users can't edit the page directly at the moment, so I've just undone the change for you to restore the correct version. Let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks for noticing this mistake! Extraordinary Writ (talk) 19:57, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much. The second In-N-Out is where my love of their food began at 5 years old, and I’m 62 now. I live in Oregon, and Redding, California used to be the northern-most In-N-Out, almost 4 hours away. That was my first stop of my trips to California. I was so happy when the moved into Oregon!
Thank you so much for your prompt response.

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Question from Elotor (10:53, 1 September 2023)

Hi!

I noticed that a link to a reference in the article about Heegner points was no longer valid and I edited it: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Heegner_point&diff=prev&oldid=1173259036

Should I also edit the same link in the french version of the article? I see that there is an archived version of the link there: https://archive.wikiwix.com/cache/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.msri.org%2Fcommunications%2Fbooks%2FBook49%2Ffiles%2F01birch.pdf

Thanks --Elotor (talk) 10:53, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Elotor, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm not an expert on how things work on the French Wikipedia, but if you want to, I'm sure it would be fine to replace the broken "lire en ligne" link with the new version—just make sure to leave the archived version as a backup. Thanks for noticing the error, and let me know if you have any other questions! Extraordinary Writ (talk) 22:09, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
Oh, actually, I misunderstood: the French Wikipedia has a special way of archiving links, so you can just change the URL and a new archived version will be created for you automatically. (That's much more convenient than how we do things on the English Wikipedia....) Again, just go ahead and make the edit—the archiving should take care of itself. Thanks for the Support

Hello, I appreciate your support during challenging times. I recently had a block on my account, but it was lifted yesterday. I have a request regarding two articles I created, namely Cheruvayal Raman and Paliyam Satyagraha, which were deleted under G5 criteria. I want to emphasize that all my past edits from this account were made in good faith. Could you please consider restoring these two articles for me? Akevsharma (talk) 06:46, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

Welcome back, Akevsharma! Both restored. Glad to see you were able to get unblocked—hopefully you'll be able to continue the work you were doing before. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 07:22, 16 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Fras Haji Omer, and welcome to Wikipedia! Yes, writing about a topic you're familiar with is a great idea. I recommend starting by editing some articles that already exist (creating a brand-new article can be challenging for new editors), but it's up to you. This page is a good way to learn the basics, and if you have any other questions or want advice about any specific articles or topics, feel free to let me know. New pages patrol newsletter

Hello Extraordinary Writ,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

It actually happens more than you'd expect. Question from Avila2308 (17:42, 4 October 2023)

Hello. I was asked to edit a wikipedia for someone, a boxing trainer. He isn't on wikipedia itself but is on everybodywiki bio's...are these two different things and if so, how do we create his wikipedia and to show in google searches. I cannot find him on wikipedia on google nor on wikipedia itself..so, I assume he doesn't have a page.

Thank you, Kristina --Avila2308 (talk) 17:42, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi Kristina. You're correct that Wikipedia and EverybodyWiki are not the same: they are separate sites run by separate people. The main difference is that (as the name suggests) everybody can have a page on EverybodyWiki, whereas Wikipedia, as an encyclopedia, has more selective standards on who's eligible for an article. To determine whether someone's eligible for a Wikipedia article, the basic question is this: have several independent, reliable sources (books, newspapers, trustworthy websites, etc.) written about the person in detail? For most people, the answer is no, and that means they're not eligible for an article on Wikipedia. If you think the answer is yes, then you can start going through the process of creating an article: see this page for an overview of the process. (Note that if you're affiliated with or employed by the person, you do have to declare that.) Let me know if you have any questions or if you need any help deciding whether the person is notable. REFUND

Hello, Extraordinary Writ,

Just a reminder that when you restore an article at REFUND, please be sure to make an edit to the page, if it was a CSD G13 deletion, and remove any deletion tags if it is a Soft Deletion through AFD or PROD. This didn't happen with David Shankar and Benisha Poudel so the article creator removed the AFD tags. Both articles have subsequently been renominated so they currently have new AFD tags but the situation caused confusion in one of the AFDs for one editor who thought that the article creator simply removed the AFD tag and that the article had never been deleted. Thanks for all of the good work that you do! Liz Read! Talk! 00:14, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

Thanks Liz. Usually the script takes care of that for me, so I'll have to see if I can figure out what went wrong here. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 00:42, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from Louis1070 (15:52, 9 October 2023)

Hello, I would like to write a page for the Tout Finira Bien band, existing since 10y, who just released their 3rd album. Could you help me? --Louis1070 (talk) 15:52, 9 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Louis1070, and welcome to Wikipedia! I see you've already created a page on the French Wikipedia, so I think you'll find the process very similar over here. One difference is that the English Wikipedia doesn't let brand-new users create articles directly: instead, you can use the "article wizard", which will show you how to create a draft and submit it for another editor to review. You might also want to look at this page, which provides helpful information about the expectations for new articles. Make sure to include good citations: they can be in any language, but they do need to talk about the band in detail and be from trustworthy, independent sources. Let me know if you have any questions. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 06:05, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your request.

Best regards,

Notice of apology

Everyday, at about 05:00 (UTC), my internet modem restarts. This Y my address is dynamic. This attempt is not an action of evading any previous blocks. Although it is true that I edit pages about software, I am aware that there is another user in the country I am currently living in vandalizing entertainment-related pages. Furthermore, this isn't the first that I have been scapegoated as a "TV Vandal".

I mainly came to your talk page to apologize about my behaviour in WP:AN as well as in Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2023 October 11. If possible, please advice me a list of options on what I could have done to avoid such conflict in the future. Signed 197.1.151.162 (talk) 05:25, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

It does look like I made a mistake (apologies), but it doesn't really help your case: you've been blocked for disruption plenty of times yourself (e.g. Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1127#Block evasion at Talk:Windows 10 version history), and clearly the problem is continuing. If you really want to continue contributing, you need to wait out whatever blocks you're subject to, preferably create an account to avoid further confusion, and edit in a way that doesn't involve rude edit summaries, repeated reverting, or any of the other problematic things you've done before. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 05:56, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
That was me. I can recall that time when I asserted on the deletion of white spaces. I stopped making such edit-requests after I thoroughly read and understood this. And, correction, that was the only time I deserved the right to learn a lesson and to be punished. However, I still don't understand Y that was considered disruptive, although unintentionally.41.230.145.60 (talk) 06:12, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
I also still don't understand Y my address keeps changing, like this one. I have a poor network connection now.41.230.145.60 (talk) 06:15, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
I realize that the "TV vandal" never leaves edit summaries. If I were not to leave an edit summary (including a period), then I may be accused of being the "TV vandal". I will consider your suggestion and not make absurd edit summaries after this onwards. I also apologise to wikiCleanerMan for beating about the bush and continuously reverting to my preferred revision.41.230.145.60 (talk) 06:45, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Question about recent mentor change

Hi there Extraordinary Writ. I recently got a notification that you've set another user as my mentor and removed a previous mentor. I was not aware of having a mentor previously, nor am I aware of any issues I have been involved with that would require special attention at this time. Additionally, the new mentor and I do not work on pages about even remotely similar topics, so I'm a bit confused what is happening. I was hoping you'd be able to shed some light on what was going on. Thanks! Superlucer (talk) 05:19, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi Superlucer. Mentorship is a program that automatically assigns new users ("mentees") to experienced users ("mentors"), who can answer any questions the new user might have about the basics of editing Wikipedia. You can ask the mentor a question on this page, but if you don't have any questions, feel free to ignore the notifications: this system is just a potential resource, not anything to worry about. (Mentors occasionally have to be removed when they disappear for long periods of time or get blocked, which is what happened to your previous mentor; apparently this produces notifications for all the mentees. The mentorship system is pretty new and still has some problems that need to be worked out.) Happy to answer any questions you might have about this (or anything else). Extraordinary Writ (talk) 05:58, 10 October 2023 (UTC)
I appreciate the response and the explanation! All of that makes sense, especially with the system being new and having some kinks to work out. Thanks for your help! Superlucer (talk) 20:42, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from Gjfyfyf (15:46, 18 October 2023)

how to get backlink --Gjfyfyf (talk) 15:46, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello Gjfyfyf. On Wikipedia, our goal is to create an encyclopedia—not to help people profit financially. Readers are looking for useful and unbiased information, so adding links to promote your website is not allowed, and those who do it repeatedly may be blocked from editing. Please consider using social media, paid advertising, or some other means if you want to draw attention to your website. Thanks for your understanding. Editing Andrew Jackson

Thank you so much for taking on the editing of Andrew Jackson! I jumped in to help out quite a while back, reducing the length by 4.4K words, broadening the references, and addressing the issues of balance that were raised so that they are currently not a topic of discussion. But that was all I could contribute. As you see, it needed more support.

The work you have done to date is already a great improvement. If you need any minor support, let me know, but it seems you have everything under control. It'd be nice to see this article as a "save" in FAR. If it is, it'll be because of you. Appreciatively. Wtfiv (talk) 16:33, 22 October 2023 (UTC)

Thanks, Wtfiv! Obviously you've done the lion's share of what needed to be done here: I'm just putting another coat of paint on the house you've already built, so to speak. Feel free to let me know (or just revert) if you think any of my changes are moving things in the wrong direction. Looking forward to seeing it kept at FAR! Extraordinary Writ (talk) 19:23, 22 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello Extraordinary Writ,

You recently offered a statement in a request for arbitration. The Arbitration Committee has accepted that request for arbitration and an arbitration case has been opened at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Industrial agriculture. Evidence that you wish the arbitrators to consider should be added to the evidence subpage, at Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Industrial agriculture/Evidence. Please add your evidence by November 8, 2023, which is when the evidence phase closes. For a guide to the arbitration process, see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Guide to arbitration.

For the Arbitration Committee,
~ ToBeFree (talk) 01:09, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

While I appreciate the terseness constraints on edit summaries, I didn't add anything boldly. I corrected an addition to make it more closely match what I believe existing policy to be. Had there not been a bold edit, a response would have been unnecessary. In this case, I believed a modification more useful to a subsequent discussion than a simple revert en bloc, such edits are encouraged by WP:BRDR, and you'll note my comment on the talk page recognized the strong possibility (inevitability?) that someone would do that later. Jclemens (talk) 04:55, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

I'm not sure that's really a meaningful distinction, but either way, no worries. Personally I'd support something broadly similar to your wording, but given how contentious this is whenever it comes up, it really needs to be resolved at the global-consensus level (as I've said before). Extraordinary Writ (talk) 05:12, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

How to revert changes properly?

Done! Thanks for letting me know, Kbelyavs88. In this case the method described here worked, but other times the unhelpful edits have to be fixed manually. If you run into a similar problem in the future, feel free to just let me or another experienced editor know. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 06:47, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello

How I can insert my images to my page ? --Dharmendra Kumar (DK-JALALABAD) (talk) 07:45, 27 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello Dharmendra Kumar. When you're editing the page, there should be a button toward the top that says "insert". It opens a menu that includes "images and media". If you click that button and choose "upload", it'll walk you through the process of adding an image. For copyright reasons, you should generally only upload pictures that you took yourself (with some exceptions). If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello Extraordinary Writ:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 1000 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Chesebro

I rewrote the sentence about the 1960 Hawaii electors and removed the reference to what Nixon said about it. I don't know that there was anything wrong with it before, but it wasn't maybe the best way to reference how Chesebro used that precedent in his memo.

Chesebro used that precedent as a key part of his argument that Jan. 6 is the only deadline that matters for counting electoral votes.

I don't understand why you flagged the photo for deletion. Utahredrock (talk) 02:34, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

Thanks, the Hawaii section looks better. As for the mugshot, it ran afoul of our fairly strict rules on using copyrighted images: with a few exceptions that don't apply here, non-free images can't be used to depict a living person since it's possible to get a freely licensed image instead (even if that image doesn't currently exist). Extraordinary Writ (talk) 02:55, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
Is a mugshot from Georgia copyrighted? I honestly don't know, but it doesn't seem like it would be. Utahredrock (talk) 03:08, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
Works of the U.S. federal government aren't copyrighted, but "the works of most state and local governments are subject to copyright", including in Georgia. (See here for similar thoughts.) Extraordinary Writ (talk) 03:30, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for that link. The main point is that people can't use a photo like that for profit. Betsy Rosenblatt, a professor at Case Western Reserve University’s School of Law, said the "First Amendment makes a lot of allowances for things like parody, newsworthiness, commentary and criticism."
OK, I get if there's any question, which seems to be the case here, then Wikimedia wouldn't want it. Those articles (it linked to a second article) don't come out and say what Georgia or Fulton County's policy actually is. They mostly speculate that people probably can't use such images for profit.
Any thoughts on where I can get a usable photo of Chesebro? Utahredrock (talk) 03:45, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
Yes, legally speaking it'd probably be fair use, but Wikipedia chooses to take a much harder line on fair use than the law requires (which goes back to the Wikipedia:Non-free content page I linked earlier). I haven't been able to find any freely licensed pictures of Chesebro, unfortunately. It's possible one will show up as the case progresses, but otherwise the only way would be for someone to take a picture of him and upload it here. (I realize in practice this means the article will likely go without an image, but for better or worse, that's what the community has decided it wants in this situation.) Extraordinary Writ (talk) 04:17, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
Got it. Thx. Utahredrock (talk) 17:51, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

Lakshmin, I can restore this page if you want me to, but it clearly does not meet our minimum requirements for articles about organizations, so if I restore it I will also start a deletion discussion, which will probably lead to its being deleted again. Let me know what you'd like me to do. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 02:27, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
Sir, if no obligation, only then I would request you to restore and I will satisfy min requirements as soon as possible and also add-in more relevant content and references to this article to keep improving it. Lakshmin, I've restored it for you as a draft at Draft:Shantmanas, where it won't be at risk of deletion for a while. When you're ready, you can submit it for review by clicking the blue "submit your draft for review" button, although it will still need in-depth coverage from reliable sources to be accepted. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 03:39, 27 October 2023 (UTC)

  • Following a motion, remedies 3.1 (All related articles under 1RR whenever the dispute over naming is concerned), 6 (Stalemate resolution) and 30 (Administrative supervision) of the Macedonia 2 case have been rescinded.
  • Following a motion, remedy 6 (One-revert rule) of the The Troubles case has been amended.
  • An arbitration case named Industrial agriculture has been opened. Evidence submissions in this case close 8 November.

Adrija Roy

Thanks a lot Sir/Ma'am for closing the DRV of Adrija Roy. Sir/Ma'am we have recreated the article and need a favour from you. Sir/Ma'am we are not any paid editors. We are just a group of editor friends who create new articles of Hindi television actors. So can you please check the article we created on Adrija Roy and tell us if there are any more changes to be made in it? 117.251.229.253 (talk) 10:52, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

It looks like the article has been nominated for deletion again, so I'd just suggest focusing on the feedback of editors in the discussion. If you can find any other high-quality sources (preferably from somewhere other than the Times of India) that discuss Roy in detail, adding them might be helpful, although you should only add the best ones rather than just including every article you can find. Message from Manishsen1

Why this page is rejected? Manishsen1 (talk) 17:08, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Manishsen1, it looks like your draft has been declined because there aren't any trustworthy sources that talk about the newspaper in detail, which is a minimum requirement for Wikipedia articles. If you can find any high-quality sources about the newspaper, feel free to add them; otherwise, it probably isn't eligible for an article at this time. Question from Mr Fixer False! (03:22, 17 November 2023)

Hi! I'm a novice editor, and likely won't edit much however I do genuinely want to help if I have the free time. So, I have one fairly simple question to ask. How do you identify when a article needs a change and/or is incomplete? --Mr Fixer False! (talk) 03:22, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Mr Fixer False!, and welcome to Wikipedia! Pretty much any article can be improved in some way or another, and one of the best ways to help is just to make minor improvements to pages you're already reading, even if it's as simple as fixing a typo or rewording a sentence. That said, if you want to find articles that are in particular need of help, this page has some nice lists that are updated pretty frequently. You can also try the Task Center, which has several activities that are suitable for new editors. Let me know if you have any other questions! Extraordinary Writ (talk) 08:22, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from OldhouseguyLLC (21:15, 26 October 2023)

Hi - this is the first time I am doing this and am quite overwhelmed. I created a draft and hit the publish button since there was not a button save as draft. The article is "Charles Lewis Lane". Most of the information came from his obituary. Can I footnote all the obit info or do I need to totally re-write it? --OldhouseguyLLC (talk) 21:15, 26 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi OldhouseguyLLC. Don't worry, you're doing fine. Despite the name, the publish button actually does just save it as a draft. You can still access it here at this link, and there should be an "edit" button toward the top for you to make any more changes. Footnotes are just fine too. I've edited the draft for you to adjust the formatting; if you want to add any more footnotes, there should be a "cite" button at the top when you're editing that'll walk you through the process. (If you get stuck, just let me know.) One other thing: to show that Lane is significant enough to deserve an article, it'd be helpful if you could find one or two more sources that discuss him in detail (newspaper clippings, books, trustworthy websites, etc.) and cite them in the draft too. Let me know if you run into any other issues or have any more questions. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 04:12, 27 October 2023 (UTC)
Hello - I think I have most of the info entered. I would like to change the title to "Lewis Lane" since this is the name he went by during his career. I have a lot of information on him including a photo of his composition "Fragments" that I took at a local museum. Some of the information is in announcement cards. OldhouseguyLLC (talk) 20:52, 16 November 2023 (UTC)
Nice work, OldhouseguyLLC! I moved the page to use the shorter name, added the image you uploaded, and made a handful of other minor changes. If there's anything else you have questions about, feel free to ask. Otherwise, if you're ready for the draft to become a regular article, let me know and I can take care of that for you: it definitely meets the requirements. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 08:08, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
That sounds great. Yes please submit it for me. Thanks! OldhouseguyLLC (talk) 18:59, 17 November 2023 (UTC)
Done, OldhouseguyLLC—see Lewis Lane. If you found this interesting/enjoyable, I hope you'll consider sticking around: almost any article can be improved with some digging on Newspapers.com, so people who know how to use it effectively are really valuable! Bayshore Global Management

Hi. I noticed Bayshore Global Management has been deleted because it was created by a banned user. I am thinking of creating the page again as its a big family office. However I want to see the contents of the deleted page first before I consider doing so. I don't want to waste time researching this firm only to find out its inherently non-notable. Can this be done? - Imcdc Contact 13:02, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Suwon15 on Love All Play (TV series) (10:19, 25 November 2023)

hello, I wanted to add the details for part 12 of the Ost but it appears the page is in coding I'm not familiar with. Is there a way I can just enter the info as text? thanks! --Suwon15 (talk) 10:19, 25 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Suwon15. If you want, you can just tell me on this page what exactly you want added—I'd be happy to take care of it for you. The coding actually isn't as complicated as it looks, so you might want to try copying the previous entry and making the relevant changes, but I definitely understand if you'd rather not. Advice

Greetings Extraordinary Writ. I was looking for an active administrator and I saw that you recently edited WP:ANI. Regarding this situation, see User talk:TheMovieGuy#Plagiarism and copyright issue with plot summary. This editor has not responded to my message regarding a copyvio but has continued editing over days. Could you advise me how to proceed in this situation? Thank you. starship.paint (RUN) 08:33, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Thanks Starship.paint. I've left another message in the hope of getting a response at some point. The main question is whether it's just a one-off incident or a long-term pattern. If there's nothing beyond occasional mistakes, we can just treat this as a warning and move on; if it's a long-term pattern, a WP:CCI may be necessary and, if there's no engagement, possibly a block. I don't have time to dig through their contributions right now (it's getting late here), but if you notice any other copyvios, feel free to let me know. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 09:10, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks very much Extraordinary Writ. It doesn't seem to be a long-term pattern, the editor's main interests are movies (that they have presumably watched) and adding information about movies seems not to be copied. I'm guessing this is a book not read, but the editor doesn't seem to have edited too many articles on books. starship.paint (RUN) 10:52, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
We now have what seems to be a satisfactory response, Starship.paint, and I've revdelled the problematic material, so I don't think there's anything more to be done here. Thanks again for the message. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 08:26, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Indeed. Thank you again Extraordinary Writ. starship.paint (RUN) 09:15, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Why was this fancruft nonsense undeleted?

Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2023_October_27#SSSniperWolf And how in the world, if the intention was to allow in back into draftspace, did it get out in mainspace? I see no explanation for either action, and no rational argument offered by the requester and their supporters. I only realized that this was undeleted when another incessant question at RSN. The undelete should be undone if possible...and frankly, the article salted if I had my druthers. Banks Irk (talk) 00:24, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

Also, I see that the "undeleted" article talkpage has no link to the five deletion discussions, and all history is gone on both the article and talkpage. Banks Irk (talk) 00:31, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Banks Irk, the history here is extremely convoluted, but I think this is the gist of it: one admin signed off on undeleting the old draftspace version, it was rewritten, and Alexis Jazz moved it to mainspace after another admin took it off the title blacklist. I didn't actually undelete/unprotect anything: by the time I closed the DRV, all of that had already happened. My best suggestion at this point would just be to send it back to AfD (for the sixth time...I know, I know) if you don't think the new sources are adequate. The old AfDs do seem to be linked at the top of Talk:SSSniperWolf—is there somewhere else they need to be? As for the history, there wasn't much interest at the DRV in undeleting hundreds of revisions, heavily edited (and some oversighted) such that it's not at all clear which are the most complete, but if there's anything in particular you'd like restored, let me know. Thanks for the explanation. I understand. I now realize that the AFD template only shows up on desktop view, not mobile, so my mistake there. I'm not invested enough in this to actually start a sixth AFD...I guess I am just exasperated and exhausted by the incessant RSN questions about ridiculous proposed sources desperately seeking a basis for notability of one YouTuber's feud with another YouTuber. Banks Irk (talk) 01:07, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Extraordinary Writ, I can confirm that's pretty much the gist of it. (except for what Cryptic already pointed out below about the blacklist entry)
While helping with WP:SSSniperWolf sources overview, Davest3r08 posted many questions on WP:RS/N. As I'm generally not actively watching RS/N nor WP:HOUNDING Dave, I was unaware this was happening at all.
When I asked "another incessant question" on RS/N yesterday it wasn't to establish notability for SSSniperWolf. The source in question provided a new factlet, and it's a partner of GameStar, the "best-selling German-language magazine focused on PC gaming" according to that article. Either way, after their comment I feel sufficiently discouraged from ever asking about the reliability of a source for the SSSniperWolf article ever again. I'll just use my own best judgment from now on.
And I don't even like SSSniperWolf..Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 09:49, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Alexis Jazz had already moved it to that title when I unblacklisted it. The blacklist doesn't affect pagemovers anyway. —Cryptic 04:33, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Yes, you're right—apologies. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 05:12, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
So, you're telling me that because AJ has pagemover rights, they were able to recreate a deleted and salted article simply by recreating it under a new name, and then moving it back to the salted title? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! Does no one else think this is insane?Banks Irk (talk) 22:53, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Well, the other factor is that the title wasn't fully salted: it was only extended-confirmed protected, apparently to allow the possibility of recreation through WP:AFC. Had it been set to admin-only, Alexis Jazz wouldn't have been able to move it there directly, although there are still ways of doing it indirectly. Our policies on recreation (like WP:G4) are actually much more lax than many people realize, which reduces the amount of hassle in some cases but increases it tremendously in others (like this one). Personally I'd support tightening G4 at least somewhat, but those proposals have been shot down repeatedly over the years, alas. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 00:37, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
I'm seriously thinking about taking this to ANI rather than another AFD. It's absurd that an editor who loses a AFD battle (for the 5th time) so badly that an article is not merely deleted but salted can so easily bypass and game the process like this. My dismay is tempered only by my admiration for such a clever exploitation of rights that I believe no one imagined could be utilized so cleverly and nefariously. Banks Irk (talk) 01:03, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
To be fair, there are quite a few sources that postdate the AfD and are at least arguably reliable/sigcov, so it's not entirely unreasonable to think notability had changed, and Alexis Jazz did go to DRV first and get at least tepid support for recreation. ANI isn't likely to want to get involved here—it'll just lead to more unproductive back-and-forths. Up to you, though. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 01:20, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
You're likely correct that a trip to the dramaboards is unlikely to be productive. Since I doubt that starting a 6th AFD would be worth the effort, why would I be deluded into wading into the ANI briarpatch? Banks Irk (talk) 03:50, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Banks Irk, It's absurd that an editor who loses a AFD battle (for the 5th time) so badly that an article is not merely deleted but salted can so easily bypass and game the process like this.
Just noting that I hadn't actually participated in any of those 5 AfDs.Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 09:09, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
The blacklisting would have taken precedence over the salting; it restricted creation to admins, pagemovers, and template editors, while the edit-confirmed salting allowed just about any remotely established editor. (And the blacklisting applied to every namespace, and of course covered all the various miscapitalizations.) There wasn't even any need to recreate at a different title and then move; Alexis Jazz could have just created the page directly. There is a big warning message, though, and any pagemover/template-editor who deliberately recreated a blacklisted title with content as problematic as the reason it was blacklisted would very quickly have the permission revoked.
So far as I can find, the only related pages that were salted to administrator-only - which was not redundant to the blacklisting - were Draft:Sssniperwolf (logs) and Draft:SSSniperWolf (logs); the missing puzzle-pieces in the latter, which skips directly from Deb's admin-only salting to Alexis Jazz's move to mainspace, are at yet a third capitalization, Draft:SSSniperwolf (logs). —Cryptic 02:48, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Sorry for any contribution I may have made to this mess. Deb (talk) 12:20, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Re G4 laxness specifically, I am still embittered, eighteen and a half years later, about how the current "substantially identical" wording came about. G4 used to just read "Reposted content that was deleted according to Wikipedia deletion policy. ¶ •This does not apply to content that was undeleted according to undeletion policy." In a very, very broad sitewide RFC that was almost entirely proposals for new criteria, the rewording to what's essentially the current version was stuck unobtrusively in the middle (example pre-closure version), by which time very many voters were suffering from fatigue and banner blindness, and variously didn't see that this was a change to a current criterion rather than an entirely new one, or were mostly concentrating on the cosmetic parts of the change (like not applying to previous speedies, which of course could still be speedied for the same reason again instead of G4). There were plenty of support comments like "To [sic] many VfDd articles are recreated, then endlessly re-debated" and "In practice the only difference between the current and proposed wording is that the proposed system would allow a slightly different repost to be deleted, but that does tend to happen already. Seems like a trivial change to me." that make it clear that people thought they were broadening G4's applicability rather than narrowing it. —Cryptic 03:28, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
That is illuminating, and utterly maddening. Thanks for the background. The idea that a deleted and salted article can be resurrected completely out of normal expected process is insane. Banks Irk (talk) 03:42, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
Fascinating...I hadn't seen that RfC before, so thanks for sharing. I always find it enlightening to hear the real backstories of policies that are now treated as if they came down on stone tablets from Mount Sinai. It's interesting that while even pretending to follow policy as written occurred to you in 2005, because that gap between policy and practice is of course exactly what's happened with G4, and in a way it's served as a sort of immune response against the unrealistic "substantially identical" standard. Perhaps someday we'll bring policy and practice back into line, although I'm not holding my breath. Extraordinary Writ (talk) 09:26, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
