WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question from Game0saur (15:49, 28 February 2024)

Hello, I want to try editing because I noticed a page on the extinct animal Agialosaurus was rather short, I gathered all the knowledge i could but when I went to start editing I was rather intimidated, may you please explain how I can start editing before I make a mistake? --Game0saur (talk) 15:49, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

@Game0saur: hi; sorry for the delay in getting back to you. In general I'd suggest being bold and making the edits; if you make any mistakes I or another Wikipedia editor would be happy to help you fix them. I'm not sure what in particular you're worried about messing up; if you let me know, I can point you to more specific guidelines regarding that. Elli (talk | contribs) 19:30, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from ElijahOLOWO (19:27, 6 March 2024)

Hi, i have been trrying to publish an article for the past 5 days but it keeps getting declined --ElijahOLOWO (talk) 19:27, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

@ElijahOLOWO: thanks for reaching out. You need reliable, independent sources with significant coverage of the subject to demonstrate notability, and none are present in your article. Elli (talk | contribs) 19:32, 6 March 2024 (UTC)

Help with image maps

Hi, I know you hav created a lot of election image maps and I was curious of you could please create ones for the 2020, 2023, and 2024 secretary of state elections along with the 2022 and 2024 state treasurer elections. That would be a major help. Thanks. Coolxsearcher1414 (talk) 00:04, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

@Coolxsearcher1414: thanks for reaching out. Will try to do so in a bit though I am somewhat busy. Elli (talk | contribs) 20:18, 9 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Ignat.Lolov (17:11, 27 February 2024)

Hello! I have registered here very recently and started editing just a few days ago. I tried to add a trustworthy source to this article - https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Christian_Democrats_(Denmark). Apparently, the visual editor failed to convert the source properly because the template has some red lines (it is reference 16). I would really love to avoid getting these annoying red notifications, so is there any tip on how to deal with it? Best regards! --Ignat.Lolov (talk) 17:11, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

@Ignat.Lolov: thanks for reaching out! If you edit the page and click on the reference in visual editor, you should be able to modify its details. Particularly, the "first" field currently contains 18 nov 2021 kl 10:07 Artiklen er mere end 30 dage gammel Del artiklen Del artiklen Facebook Twitter E.-mail Kopier link /ritzau/ -- you want to change that to the actual first name of the author (make sure the "Last name" field is also fixed). Elli (talk | contribs) 17:16, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
@Elli, many thanks for the clear instruction! I will go to the article about the Christian Democrats and try this option out! Ignat.Lolov (talk) 17:12, 11 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from LiamKorda (15:05, 16 March 2024)

Hello, I would like to know about how can attach the both the top tables and both the bottom tables together, respectively in this article. Is it it even possible ? LiamKorda 15:05, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Omuirgheasain on Clan Morrison (14:56, 17 March 2024)

Hello. I changed the plant badge for Morrison from driftwood, which was incorrect, to driftweed, which is seaweed. There is still a footnote that links to driftwood, how do I remove that? Thank you, Melissa --Omuirgheasain (talk) 14:56, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

Well apparently the article that said the plant badge is driftweed is outnumbered by other articles stating it is driftwood so I edited it back and have no further questions. Thanks! --Omuirgheasain (talk) 15:03, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello, how can I move the page I wrote from sandbox to Wikipedia, please? --Sai160221 (talk) 19:19, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

@Sai160221: thanks for reaching out. Once you are autoconfirmed, you can use the move page feature. However, I've noticed that the page you have written is not in English. As this is English Wikipedia, all articles must be written in English. If you want to write in Tamil, you can contribute at Tamil Wikipedia. Elli (talk | contribs) 19:36, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
Hello Elli,
Thanks a lot for your prompt response. Is auto confirmation made by Wikipedia and how long it takes please? I will translate the content to English. Can I use the same login details to access the Tamil Wikipedia or should I sign up separately again? Thanks Sai 2A00:23EE:1CF0:3135:98D9:2ADA:11A1:A1B6 (talk) 21:21, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
Also when I create a page in Tamil can I create the wiki page directly instead of sandbox for I have practiced it well today and have created and edited pages already a few years back? Thanks 2A00:23EE:1CF0:3135:98D9:2ADA:11A1:A1B6 (talk) 21:23, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Elli,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

WikiCup 2024 April newsletter

We are approaching the end of the 2024 WikiCup's second round, with a little over two weeks remaining. Currently, contestants must score at least 105 points to progress to the third round.

Our current top scorers are as follows:

Competitors may submit work for the second round until the end of 28 April, and the third round starts 1 May. Remember that only competitors with the top 32 scores will make it through to the third round. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs. As a reminder, competitors are strictly prohibited from gaming Wikipedia policies or processes to receive more points.

If you would like to learn more about rules and scoring for the 2024 WikiCup, please read Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Question from Ignat.Lolov (16:56, 8 April 2024)

Hi, Elli! I have just found out that there are some archived versions of dead pages, which are stored on the WebArchive Machine. I tried to insert several of them in my edit about a danish politician through the visual editor. It seems that the editor's citation tool does not recognize the archived webpages because it keeps asking me to insert these sources manually. Is there any guide how to do it? I am a bit confused with the webarchive template because it is somehow different from the standard one for citing news webpages and what not. Cheers! --Ignat.Lolov (talk) 16:56, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

@Ignat.Lolov: I'm not familiar with the exact problem you're having as I don't use VE much. Would suggest reading Template:Cite web#Using "archive-url" and "archive-date" (and optionally "url-status") for webpages that have been archived -- please let me know if you need more help getting this to work. On 15 April 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 2023–24 Caddo Parish sheriff election, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the 2023 election for sheriff in Caddo Parish, Louisiana, was rerun after an initial margin of one vote? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/2023–24 Caddo Parish sheriff election. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 2023–24 Caddo Parish sheriff election), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Question from RedDrum1824 (19:57, 27 April 2024)

Hello Elli. Thank you for mentoring me. There are two pages that I attempted to Edit, and my changes were reverted. The edits were to add images to info-boxes on election information pages. One reason appears to be that the images I added to the pages were flagged for more documentation to show the images were appropriately licensed. I believe this has been addressed through follow up with a photo editor and sending copies of releases from the professional photographers hired to provide the images. The images are still available in Wikipedia Commons. There was a second reason stated for reverting the posts - "the 5% rule." I discovered a Wiki page that seems to explain it: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia:Five_percent_rule. After discovering the rule, I have researched polling data that shows 5% of registered voters plan to vote for the candidates that I added. My plan is to share this information with the editor who reverted my changes before I try again. The pages I am editing have tons of data, formatting challenges, real time updates, and I'm sure people like me trying to help but making more work for people. I am very sensitive to this challenge and I want to be sure I'm going about my attempt to contribute the right way. Anything you suggest I do differently? --RedDrum1824 (talk) 19:57, 27 April 2024 (UTC)

@RedDrum1824: thanks for reaching out. I took a look at your edits and for upcoming elections, the 5% rule usually applies regarding the previous election to that same office (so for example, if Libertarians got 6% last election, you'd include their candidate this election). Whether pre-election polling of 5% is sufficient for candidate inclusion is disputed but the general consensus seems to be against.
As for the files you uploaded to Commons: the ones with permission sent in appear to have had that permission accepted, so I think you're good there.
Please let me know if you have any more questions. Elli (talk | contribs) 04:16, 28 April 2024 (UTC)
Elli - very helpful. Thx. I'll work within these parameters. RedDrum1824 (talk) 08:05, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 May newsletter

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.

The following scorers in Round 2 all scored more than 500 points:

The full scores for Round 2 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed during Round 3, which starts on 1 May at 00:00 (UTC). Question from Waitformebro (18:07, 29 April 2024)

Hi Elli, How are you? I have a few things. I was wondering if I have to edit all the suggested articles I get or if I can search to find something to edit I'm more interested in? I'm also just a school student and I'm interested in getting more practice on these editing and citing skills. further, I'm working to become a writer in the future so this might be a good way to get practice. Do you have any suggestions or tips? Thank you so much, have a great rest of your day! --Waitformebro (talk) 18:07, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

@Waitformebro: yeah you can edit any page you like; the suggested ones are just suggestions. I'll note that Wikipedia has different standards and expectations compared to what might be present at your educational institution, but at the same time I do think it's good practice. I don't have any general tips but if you have specific questions feel free let me know. Elli (talk | contribs) 18:09, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks Elli!
I do have a few quick questions. I'm exploring Wikipedia right now and I can't find a 'create' or 'search to edit' (or anything like that) button and was wondering where that might be. Also with this editor version of Wikipedia can I still view pages and search for things like before? And when I do edit a page would I get feedback on how I did or how I could improve on what I do?
Thanks so much! Waitformebro (talk) 18:24, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
@Waitformebro: there's no separate "search to edit" function; you just search and navigate like normal. And yes reading and searching works the same. When you edit a page, you don't usually get feedback, unless someone has a problem with your edit. If you want me to review particular edits you've made, feel free to ask and I'll let you know what I think. Elli (talk | contribs) 18:30, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

Whether to take your advice seriously

Per discussions at Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2024 April 26, the two cover arts of You'll Never Get to Heaven (If You Break My Heart) have been deleted without opposition.

If you feel deleting those covers was a mistake, please contact the deleting admin (Fastily) or have those deletions reviewed at WP:DRV. Otherwise, why take your advice seriously that you gave me, i.e. telling me to discontinue replacing cover arts, if you're unwilling to challenge the deletions? @George Ho: I wasn't notified of those FFD's and honestly am not interested in fighting with you about every cover art of every song. Well, then I insist that you don't tell me anymore to stop. All right? George Ho (talk) 03:38, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
@George Ho: again, this isn't something I want to spend time debating. You know that I think you should stop such edits, and when I see edits you make that I find problematic, I will challenge them. My intent isn't to hound you, though. That doesn't mean I agree with your edits, just that I have better things to do. Elli (talk | contribs) 03:53, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
when I see edits you make that I find problematic, I will challenge them. How else will you challenge my edits then? ANI? ArbCom? Also, I don't have to invite you to FFD discussions, including ones I started, right?
My intent isn't to hound you, though. That doesn't mean I agree with your edits, just that I have better things to do. I dunno. Your intent to challenge my edits make what I'm quoting self-contradictory, eh? George Ho (talk) 07:03, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
@George Ho: no, you don't have to invite me to discussions (though you should have notified me of the discussion for the files I challenged your CSD's on).
Your intent to challenge my edits make what I'm quoting self-contradictory, eh? No. I am not going to look through your edits regularly and challenge anything I find objectionable, but if I happen to come across edits from you that are problematic, I will challenge them. This is how I interact with basically everyone on the project.
Do you want me to take you to ANI? Elli (talk | contribs) 07:10, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
(though you should have notified me of the discussion for the files I challenged your CSD's on) I can't help wonder why you've not participate in FFD discussions as much as you want.
Do you want me to take you to ANI? Not necessarily. Actually, I really think you didn't have to challenge my edits just because you think general consensus wouldn't go along with my edits. WP:EDITCONSENSUS and/or WP:DISCUSSCONSENSUS should help you decide whether or not to challenge them.
If edits I made aren't challenged, then consensus (favoring edits on certain articles) would be implied... right? I took this as true in certain cases. Since you're not willing to challenge the deletions, I can imply "no contest" from you this time.
Honestly, my issue with "general consensus" is their high emphases on rock songs and classics that still attract later generations to this day. The editors never seem to care much about perspectives of consumers from the past and intent of those who distributed singles in the vinyl era. Even WikiProject Music/Album/Songs members seem to be fans of rock or highly-popular classics or first-run contemporaries... or Madonna? George Ho (talk) 07:49, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
this isn't an area I care passionately about. If the area you were referring to is cover arts or music, then why trying to follow what you assume is usual "consensus" and then challenge my edits?
Again, if you're not that passionate, then try to stay out of my hair please, including areas that I'm interested in. All right? George Ho (talk) 15:04, 4 May 2024 (UTC) Striking out my shameful comment; see more at ANI (diff). —George Ho (talk) 00:39, 8 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from PrinceofPunjab (11:45, 15 May 2024)

Hello,

I wanted to ask that If a source website is asking for cookies does that means it should be removed ? Also, do website necessarily needs to be related to the subject of the article or a simple news article who also confirms the information will also work ?

Thank You. --PrinceofPunjabTALK 11:45, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

@PrinceofPunjab: hi. No, a website doesn't need to be removed because it wants to set cookies. Also not exactly sure what your second question is asking. Independent secondary sources that contain significant coverage are preferable, but passing mentions of some details can also be fine, so long as the detail is noteworthy enough for inclusion. Elli (talk | contribs) 22:14, 27 May 2024 (UTC)
@Elli I asked the second question due to this edit by an user who removed a source from Sports news website of a major newspaper claiming it was asking for cookies and therefore only tennis related sources be cited in this article. I tried conversing the user but they are just set in their ways. PrinceofPunjabTALK 04:34, 31 May 2024 (UTC)
@PrinceofPunjab: yeah, that site (part of The Hindu) appears to be reliable and whether it asks for cookies or not has literally nothing to do with it. Elli (talk | contribs) 13:09, 31 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from A-Ousadden (19:54, 15 May 2024)

Hello. I created this account for the only purpose of renaming the English page about Theodore Kaczinski, because I find it disrespectful to his memory to call him first "Ted". His nickname refers to his illegal activities but as he is presumed to be one of the brightest human beings ever born, he deserves more than that. I do not find it fair as the nickname "Ted" was the one the FBI gave him. It would be nice if you could remove the nickname for the title page and the paragraphs that use it abusively. --A-Ousadden (talk) 19:54, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Question from Aspen85 (13:27, 1 June 2024)

Hi! I am pretty new to Wikipedia and all but,I was wondering, how do those 'blue words' on the pages actually become linked? I tried it on a page which needed links but it didn't work. Could you kindly tell me how exactly do those words get linked? --Aspen85 (talk) 13:27, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

@Aspen85: ah, I see the issue. You attempted to use the entire URL of the page when adding a link, but you should actually only use the page title (do [[Terraform (software)|Terraform]], not [[https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Terraform_(software)|Terraform]]. I've fixed it for you at Platform engineering. Please let me know if you have any more questions :) Elli (talk | contribs) 13:42, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much! Aspen85 (talk) 13:04, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Actually I have another question. When I clicked on the Platform engineering link, I had noticed that half of the page was gone including the Terraform link. Can you tell me why this happened? Aspen85 (talk) 13:10, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
@Aspen85: if you look at the article's history, you can see the different edits people have made. Not all of them had edit summaries so I can't tell you why all of them were made, though; you'd have to ask those editors. Elli (talk | contribs) 13:13, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
I have typed a message on to the page, and I had found out it was copyrighted. There was a comment suggesting to remove the legal part of the page. I have a teeny tiny question about that. Wouldn't we be making the page illegal if we removed the copyright part? Aspen85 (talk) 14:17, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
@Aspen85: external copyrighted content isn't allowed in Wikipedia pages (except in very narrow circumstances), so removing that content is necessary. Elli (talk | contribs) 14:20, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Got it. Thanks for letting me know. Aspen85 (talk) 14:21, 2 June 2024 (UTC)

Question from Bookworm8142 (18:22, 1 June 2024)

Hello! I not-so-recently edited https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/365.bank,_a._s. and https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Chrysochus_cobaltinus I would just like to get some additional feedback/advice as well as some tips on how to improve.

These were my first edits ever to Wikipedia, and although they were modest, I'm actually kinda proud :D. However, because they were my first edits, I will gladly accept any help you can give me.

This is a repost because my previous mentor did not respond, nor offer any guidance.

Thanks again! --Bookworm8142 (talk) 18:22, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

@Bookworm8142: thanks for reaching out! Your edits look alright. The only issue is that on Chrysochus cobaltinus, there usually shouldn't be links in the bolded text in the lead (MOS:BOLDLINK). Also, make sure you aren't linking too much (but I don't think you did in that edit). Elli (talk | contribs) 13:16, 2 June 2024 (UTC)
Thanks a bunch! I will make sure to double check if it's bolded next time. I was worried about the overlinking but what I tried to do was to see if there was already a link with that information, and if there was, to avoid relinking it.
Thanks again! Bookworm8142 (talk) 15:43, 5 June 2024 (UTC)

I'll be going to bed shortly, and if I leave it until the morning it will only be appropriately premature, which wouldn't do at all. Welcome to the corps, I look forward to working with you. Question from Hrspks (08:46, 4 June 2024)

Hello! I started on Wikipedia because I noticed a couple of articles missing from the Hungarian site, that I wanted to translate. I also see many opportunities for the opposite, there is a lot of information about Hungary and it's culture that is not translated to English. I would really like to translate some of these, but I do not yet have permissions to add translations to English Wikipedia.

What are the steps for getting there? I did start making edits adding information to English Wikipedia where I can, but I don't understand the process that well. --Hrspks (talk) 08:46, 4 June 2024 (UTC)

@Hrspks: hi! I'd suggest making more minor edits first, to get somewhat acquainted with how editing works around here. You could also expand Hungary-related articles we have without doing a direct translation; I think this would help you understand the article-writing process better, which is a good thing to understand before doing translations of articles from other languages.
Please let me know if there's something specific you'd like help with. Elli (talk | contribs) 04:33, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
