Administrators' newsletter – December 2017
News and updates for administrators from the past month (November 2017).
- Following a request for comment, a new section has been added to the username policy which disallows usernames containing emoji, emoticons or otherwise "decorative" usernames, and usernames that use any non-language symbols. Administrators should discuss issues related to these types of usernames before blocking.
- Wikimedians are now invited to vote on the proposals in the 2017 Community Wishlist Survey on Meta Wiki until 10 December 2017. In particular, there is a section of the survey regarding new tools for administrators and for anti-harassment.
- A new function is available to edit filter managers which can be used to store matches from regular expressions.
- Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is open until Sunday 23:59, 10 December 2017 (UTC). There are 12 candidates running for 8 vacant seats.
- Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.
- The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative is conducting a survey for English Wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works (i.e. which problems it deals with well and which problems it struggles with). If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be emailed to you via Special:EmailUser.

- Synchronicity, you started scheduling within minutes after I put the final touches on "Space Seed". - Dank (push to talk) 15:23, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
- You probably want to add something like "see article history for attribution" when you schedule. We got a series of complaints a while back that we weren't crediting other people's work properly when we schedule. - Dank (push to talk) 17:02, 19 January 2018 (UTC) (No need to change what you did, just add that wording going forward). - Dank (push to talk) 17:03, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

- (talk page watcher) Assuming you're talking about Feb 28, if you don't run Trump Martin Keamy might be a good choice—that date will be the 10th anniversary of the first appearance of the character so you have the much-vaunted "date relevance", and it's as uncontentious an article as could be imagined. ‑ Iridescent 18:45, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
- Thank Iri, yes it's the 28th. The problem here is that NPOV is a moving target ... what people think is "balanced" one month can seem imbalanced after the political winds shift. If we can find words that are bland without coming across as dodging the issues, then I won't object, as long as Victoria and Epicgenius are okay with it. - Dank (push to talk) 19:31, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
- I confess that I don't see any "Donald Trump" article scheduled anywhere... Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 19:59, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
- That's because it hasn't been scheduled yet - it's just the 28 February listing at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/pending. Dank's working on getting a neutral blurb with the nominators before I do the finalization/paperwork. Ealdgyth - Talk 20:01, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

unwanted page moves
Hi Ealdgyth! I am writing because I asked montanabw for a big gun. She said you were, but I probably one had a 50/50 chance of you weighing because you so busy. And that's totally fine. No guilt trip or expectations...just ignore if too busy.
Some of us were talking through the new PBR tour name issue on the Built Ford Tough Series when an anonymous user kept making unsourced changes that changed the whole meaning of the article to be about the new tour name. So I requested page protection and got an admin involved for my trouble. They took over, putting full protection on the page (montanabw talked them down to semi-protection), decided the article needed its name changed and started a name change request-all before I could respond or put forth a case like you would in a resolution board. They also reverted my last edit on the Professional Bull Riders to that same probable troll's edit, so humiliating. montanabw reverted back to mine. She's a such a treasure. But anyway, can you look at the move request? Talk:Built Ford Tough Series If you don't agree, that's fine..really. I absolutely don't expect you to agree just because we know each other. I want what's best for the article. But it is telling that an IP was created who then posted in the discussion that I was deceiving editors. And yes, I was a bit brusque in the talk page sometimes. For over a week now, I've been dealing with an incredible amount of anonymous users for that area. Thanks!
One little thing. I thought montanabw convinced them full protection was only for serious issues when she posted to their talk page [[1]]. But I just checked and it's still locked for everybody except admins for a week. Isn't that way too harsh? There was no serious edit warring going on. I don't know any other admins to ask. dawnleelynn(talk) 21:12, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

- An RfC has closed with a consensus that candidates at WP:RFA must disclose whether they have ever edited for pay and that administrators may never use administrative tools as part of any paid editing activity, except when they are acting as a Wikipedian-in-Residence or when the payment is made by the Wikimedia Foundation or an affiliate of the WMF.
- Editors responding to threats of harm can now contact the Wikimedia Foundation's emergency address by using Special:EmailUser/Emergency. If you don't have email enabled on Wikipedia, directly contacting the emergency address using your own email client remains an option.
- A tag will now be automatically applied to edits that blank a page, turn a page into a redirect, remove/replace almost all content in a page, undo an edit, or rollback an edit. These edits were previously denoted solely by automatic edit summaries.
- The Arbitration Committee has enacted a change to the discretionary sanctions procedure which requires administrators to add a standardized editnotice when placing page restrictions. Editors cannot be sanctioned for violations of page restrictions if this editnotice was not in place at the time of the violation.
