Good work

[edit]

Good job providing citations here. Welcome. -Shootbamboo (talk) 23:42, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from MadmanBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Story Pirates, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: The Striking Viking Story Pirates. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. MadmanBot (talk) 21:14, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • The name of the organization changed, page The Striking Viking Story Pirates now a redirect. Doprendek (talk) 21:51, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • That's not how we change article titles; you can't just copy and paste text from one title to another, because it then lacks the article history and thus the attributions to editors. Don't do any further work on it until I fix it. postdlf (talk) 22:13, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • Ok, it's been fixed. You can resume editing at the new title Story Pirates now, and please read Wikipedia:Moving a page so you'll know what to do the next time. postdlf (talk) 22:23, 17 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
          • I only did this after making a fairly long search through the reference sections, trying to figure out how to rename an article. I never would have guessed that the procedure was called "Moving an article". I'll go out on a limb and guess that I'm not the first person who had the same problem. FWIW, I had avoided renaming articles for a long time (like, years) for this reason; I went ahead on an article that wasn't of tip top importance (well, except maybe to the people in Story Pirates). Although I do vaguely remember doing it long ago, but forgot the procedure, and couldn't re-find it in Wikipedia how-to . So also FWIW, if I had to name one glaring problem with Wikipedia right now, it is the organization of how-to procedures, and the organization of the reference section in general. My browser is full of bookmarks to to pages in the reference section that I've learned I may never be able to find again if I have to start de novo. Oh, and while I'm at it, I suspect that one reason Wikipedia categories have a tendency to end up looking like this is because there is no easy way to go through existing taxonomic trees to find where to put something. Or maybe there is an easy way, and it's just too hard to find the how-to. ;) End rant. Doprendek (talk) 19:31, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that you've added some links pointing to disambiguation pages. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

No, this is done on purpose

[edit]

The problem is that the titles of the linked articles are wrong (existing article "Medicine ball cabinet" should be titled: Medicine Ball Cabinet, existing article "Hurston-Wright Legacy Award" should be titled: Hurston/Wright Legacy Award). Rather than put the incorrect spelling in the other articles, I created redirect pages. I know there is a way of renaming articles that involves creating a new article or something... but I can never find the correct procedure in Wikipedia's help procedure, and it would actually create more redirects, unless I went back and corrected spellings in all linked articles.

Hi. I had to head off a couple of rather harsh edits, especially in the lead. I reverted 2. I thought to forstall any further edits which removed article material, I would put a cite needed tag just to shut them up. Totally concurred with wording and content. Unsure how much you have contributed, but it is a good and informative piece on a little-visited subject. Cheers! Irondome (talk) 21:35, 11 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on George Henry Tinkham requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Years in Hawaii

[edit]

Would it make more sense to re-structure and rename Category:Years in Hawaii (and establishments, disestablishments, etc.) into Category:Years in the Kingdom of Hawaii, Category:Years in the Republic of Hawaii, Category:Years in the Territory of Hawaii and then Hawaii to clarify? There's a few debates about the Holy Roman Empire and Germany based on the same reasoning so it would make sense for a series of CFD discussions. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 21:53, 16 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Bots

[edit]

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Looking for editors to help with an Asian Pacific American edit-a-thon in Honolulu

[edit]
On Oahu? Edit Wikipedia or Wikimedia sister projects? You are invited to help the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center with an Asian Pacific American edit-a-thon in Honolulu this September.

Aloha!

Last summer I moved to the Seattle area after 14 years in Kailua on Oahu. I immediately fell in with the Cascadia Wikimedians User Group as it formed, joined its board and became its first president as well as the GLAM representative for Washington State.

Recently, Adriel Luis, Curator (Digital & Emerging Media) at the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, contacted me about setting up an edit-a-thon like the previous Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon. In addition to discussing one for Seattle, he wrote:

As I was working two jobs while I lived on Oahu, I did not have the opportunity to meet your or any other Wikipedians at the time. Hence, the reason why I am contacting you now.

If you would like to help, please contact me through one of these methods:

A tag has been placed on Crónica Digital requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about web content, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. [edit]

You have the right to request speedy deletion of categories you created yourself, but there's no rule against having this category, even if the director doesn't have his own article. In fact, I think the category is all the more useful because of this, as the purpose of categories is to tie related articles together, and it might be hard to otherwise navigate from one related article to another. Thanks for creating Florence Gladwell, Doprendek!

BioTronics

[edit]

FWIW, I removed the prod because I was able to source a bit about the company (i.e. not a scam or hoax). Is it notable? Hard to say. It's not mentioned a lot on the web, but for a company making a non-revolutionary testing product a decade ago, that's not surprising. No objections if you take it to AfD.--Fabrictramp | talk to me 02:53, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New Challenge for Oceania and Australia

[edit]

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! Cheers.♦ --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Re your comments at this link, the template on Talk:Worksoft is stating that an old article at Worksoft was deleted after discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Worksoft. The template serves to point patrollers and others to the previous deletion discussion in case a newly-created version has the same issues. In this case, the old Worksoft article appears to have been about the company at https://www.worksoft.com/ rather than the Chinese company you've redirected the title to. Pharmaceutical companies aren't chemical companies

[edit]

Chemical Industry reads- "comprises the companies that produce industrial chemicals. Central to the modern world economy, it converts raw materials (oil, natural gas, air, water, metals, and minerals) into more than 70,000 different products.

The plastics industry contains some overlap, as most chemical companies produce plastic as well as other chemicals."

Pharmaceutical drugs aren't industrial chemicals....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 20:36, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@WilliamJE, it's a pity you didn't read Chemical Industry more carefully before posting this. See sciences], where it makes clear that pharmaceuticals are one type of chemical product. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:06, 16 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl: It's a pity that you didn't check out this 'excluding formulated products such as pharmaceutical drugs and coatings' and why[2] it is based like that....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 18:36, 16 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl: Talking about that life sciences section[3], it is totally unreferenced. Also at the end of the page is the list of chemical companies not one of which is pharmaceuticals....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 19:19, 16 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • BrownHairedGirl (talk · contribs) WP has it otherwise. IN MULTIPLE places. Plus a major magazine on the field differentiates between the two. Oh and BTW, why are we here? You came to this old thread. I pointed you to an old thread that was deleted not here. Plus it was about this editor insisting to put Industry established categories plus Companies established on category pages when Industry established is a subcategory of Companies established, not whether the production of pharmaceuticals and production of petroleum products are the same type of business. We can both safely say this is a manufacturing company but why does this editor insist on putting this pages like 'Pharmecutical companies established in ???? in both manufacturing companies established and Companies established for the same year? He's avoiding the question and making personal attacks. What does that say?...William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 20:21, 16 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

wesfarmers

[edit]

clearly in the lead sentence was created as a farmers Co-operative in 1914 - it did not become a conglomerate until after ceasing as a co-operative in 2001 - this is explained in the text of the article - cheers JarrahTree 13:51, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • hmm well I don't think this should matter. You seem to be saying, should this describe the company *at the time of establishment* vs what it has *become*? If so, watch that you aren't opening a can of worms that will involve a mass turnover of existing predominant practice. I've done a lot of company establishments-year categories, and followed existing practice, where the clear preponderance (to the point where I couldn't think of an exception) was, No, it describes what company has become. Yes this is potentially ambiguous and yes it logically contradicts say "Company place of establishment" which is always the place at that time, but hey. Although more narrowly to your point "conglomerate" is NOT NECESSARILY distinct from a co-operative; "conglomerate" is descriptive, while co-operative is a legal form. Note in the Wesfarmers case they expand into media as early as 1924--so they are now fitting a description of a conglomerate although they presumably still have the co-operative form. Even more to the point: Are you sure the existing descriptor of Wesfarmers at the time of its inception ("to be focused on the provision of services and merchandise to the Western Australian rural community") doesn't already fit the definition of "conglomerate" (which merely means one business with holdings in diverse industries)? More generally, note that company descriptions in wikipedia categories generally don't track the legal form--with the exception of "Holding companies" for some reason, and it wasn't me who started that one. "Conglomerate" is sort of a special case since it is not an industry per se; I assume it was added (again, it wasn't me) to category descriptors to spare wikipedians from categorizing every damn industry in the particular conglomerate. That being said I'm not one who's against including companies under multiple industry categories where this makes sense (and again this followed existing practice on my part). What I HAVE been trying to do is get companies' years out of some generic "Companies" category dump and into subcategories which may be of some use. Doprendek (talk) 15:23, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In answer to your argument - It does matter Wesfarmers was a notable and significant western australian historical co-operative. From trying to understand your long reply, Wesfarmers as a cooperative deserves a separate article from the conglomerate JarrahTree 09:06, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • No, not really. What is the distinction you are making between a co-operative and a conglomerate? Co-operative is a legal form, conglomerate is a description. As I pointed out, one can even argue that it was a conglomerate from its start. Doprendek (talk) 16:22, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm here because I have just been struck by another alteration by you. I have to say that (like the edit you have just made that brought me here) the last sentence above tells me you are confused. May I suggest you read your sentence beginning "No, not really" again and perhaps you will understand how strange it is. Incidentally conglomerate was a fashion that came in in the 1970s. Why are you taking it back to 1914 - I suppose just because you have established your own literal understanding of the terminology. A similar odd misunderstanding by you brought me here. Do you have much knowledge of the sphere in which you are editing? Eddaido (talk) 11:10, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • No, I am not confused. No, a conglomerate is not a "fashion," it is a description of a type of company where multiple, often disparate industries are included under one ownership structure. Yes, I do not apologize for using a "literal understanding of the terminology"; that is because I believe words (and concepts) mean something, and are not open to whatever meaning one wants to give them. No, however, it is not "[my] own" definition, it is the definition of a conglomerate. Oh, and Wikipedia is an international site, defintions are not supposed to be determined by, for example in your case, the history of corporate forms in the United States; in fact one might say that conglomerates are the rule in major enterprises in Japan and India (to give two examples), and have been for some time, certainly in Japan. Doprendek (talk) 14:48, 22 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well you are and you are also causing confusion by removing a vital part of the English language known as context. Your lack of knowledge is displayed again in your latest answer. Would you try to edit articles about nuclear fission or brain surgery when you are no specialist? Fine if you are - say - an experienced medical journalist but dangerous if you are not. Context, my friend, context — rip it out and you're lost. Eddaido (talk) 02:22, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's it, you've shown yourself to be nothing but a troll, just quit bothering me. Doprendek (talk) 04:16, 23 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Is this how it works?

Today, while editing, and without making any changes in preferences, my wikipedia edit bar (which had appeared for years) disappeared, and will not come back. Also, a number of functions which again I had been using for years, related to categories, disappeared. I vaguely remember that I had set preferences related to categories; when I went to my preferences, though, nothing allows me to set/change these. I used to have options for e.g. speedy category deletion and others, but they are gone. I have received no notice of a violation or a rights change. I have tried a preferences default reset with changes back to previous preferences from scratch with no luck. Doprendek (talk) 03:26, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doprendek, can you be more specific? what exactly were you seeing with the category that you're not seeing now? –Ammarpad (talk) 07:55, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
They were there so long I'm trying to recall. There were I believe four 'call for deletion' template buttons, categories and articles, each with both a speedy and regular option. I also remember setting preferences just for stuff dealing with categories, and I can't find these now. This was a long time ago, though. Doprendek (talk) 18:25, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The delete options I remember as being in the menu options that include 'Edit source' and 'Move'; they were abbreviated, I think 'category for deletion' was 'cfd' maybe? Doprendek (talk) 18:29, 12 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Probably the "old" Twinkle - now it's different, you activate it in the Gadgets section of your preferences. Ronhjones  (Talk) 19:09, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Doprendek, what you are describing has never been in the edit window for me. It all appears at the top of a page among the tabs, Any skin I use has tabs at the top. If you find tabs, the one that says "Page" has a drop down list for Move, History, Delete Page, Protect Page, Watch Page. Other tabs at the top are CSD (Speedy deletion), Prod (Prod for deletion), XFD (Nominate for Deletion), PP (Protect Page), Tag (Maintenance tags), Last (show most recent diff) and Unlink (unlink backlinks). It sounds to me like you're looking for your tabs. No sources to establish the existence or notability of this informal grouping of three educational institutions

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
