Barnstar

[edit]
A Barnstar!
The Barnstar of National Merit

For you excellent work on Indonesia articles in recent months, and particularly for your initiative taking sorting out the presentation and organisation of the Indonesian History series. Keep it up - remember, millions can see your work.

Biography Barnstar

[edit]
The Biography Barnstar
For your hard work of creating new and already-in-high-quality biography articles of Indonesian revolutionary heroes: Soeprapto, Sutoyo Siswomiharjo, D.I. Panjaitan, M. T. Haryono, S. Parman and Ahmad Yani which had been missed in years in Wikipedia, not including other bio-article: Gatot Soebroto. Keep up the good work! — Indon (reply) — 08:45, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Seconded by me! Noice work. --Merbabu 11:20, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's the curse of wikiediting. Merbabu once shouted that wikipedia is too big. Yes, the more you dig, the more holes you find. ;-) Actually, if there's a good communist-history barnstar, I'd like to give it to you, but I'm afraid of labeling you as such. — Indon (reply) — 13:10, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

DYK: Gatot Soebroto

[edit]
Updated DYK query On 21 October, 2007, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Gatot Soebroto, which you created or substantially expanded. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

About religion & school, it's common (in my time also) that non-christian students study at a christian school and vice-versa. They are not actually a strict religious school, compared to pesantren, but just an ordinary private school run by some religious organization. The sentence "Despite being muslim, he enrolled in a catholic school" therefore is loaded one. The school itself is run by a catholic organization but it does not similar with the interpretation of catholic institutions in western countries. Hope that clears up. — Indon (reply) — 10:26, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Elections

[edit]

No worries. You've done excellent work creating the articles - I don't think many other Asian countries (if any at all) have a full set. пﮟოьεԻ 57 13:29, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS Were there ever any elections (even if limited to certain stratas of society) during the colonial period? I don't know if Indonesia had a territorial assembly like some British colonies. пﮟოьεԻ 57 13:35, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks very much for the information. Perhaps something to that effect could be added to the Elections in Indonesia article. пﮟოьεԻ 57 16:06, 20 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help...

[edit]

Hi David

I found this article Sumenep Trunojoyo Airport. I think it is a hoax created by a known hoax creator. from google. Can you find any non-internet info on it in Jakarta? Ring one of the airlines? I'm sure it's a hox, but it's on google. --Merbabu (talk) 12:42, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

...and another issue you might like to contribute to - asking you is kinda full circle (ie, Transition to the New Order). here. --Merbabu (talk) 13:01, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lol at Friend - coincidently I have it opened at page 104 re Suharto. I also used it a fair bit in Indonesian National Revolution. What are your concerns re Friend, apart from the laugh at p. 196? Note, the candle on the table obstructing view of the TV, while there is clearly electricity on - also, the women on the left with her feet up. lol --Merbabu (talk) 05:00, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Davidelit - sorry, I just reverted your most recent edit to this article as "vandalism", which I now see it's not - your edit had been to revert the most recent change by an anon vandal. Unfortunately in eliminating his witty and charming "all your base are belong to us" you reinstated an earlier piece of vandalism (the Monty Python quote in the infobox). I've got rid of both now (and reinstated the correct motto that the vandal had deleted) - sorry for the unintended slur against you in the edit summary! GS30...

[edit]

I might be doing some adjusting to this article. Please keep an eye on it for me and change as you need. Essentially, I'm trimming a bit from Transition to the New Order and didn't want to lose anything. Although it has a longish list of refs, most isn't in-line cited. So, if I place anything in GS30 with a cite tag, feel free to cite it or delete it. cheers.

PS, love all the photos - more please. :-) --Merbabu (talk) 13:56, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Further, there are some [citation needed] tags in Transition to the New Order. Do you have that info at hand? --Merbabu (talk) 14:33, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that it would be good to keep you as free as possible to do your normal edits. DOn't get involved in the issue - rather, I will put some cite tags in and direct you specifically to them. Do what you can. :-) --Merbabu (talk) 03:30, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your good work - mudah mudahan hari libur tak terlalu meganggu'ed by WP! - Btw I was having a diff over whether dutch actually influenced grammar (rather than vocab) over at the dutch empire arts this am - I would be very interested from your perspective as to whether it was even the slightest possibility that actual grammar - ie sentence structure and internal grammatic logic - might have been influenced by the interfering londho!? I argue from my experience of fieldwork 11 years ago that such a claim is - not poss - but from your perspective - am i wrong? If you go in Yogya to the DagAdu shop in Malioboro mall they play furiously on puns between dutch english javanese of all levels and indonesian - my feeling that such wordplay is with vocab and not specific grammatic structure - any comment would be appreciated - on wiki or off _ cheers SatuSuro 04:22, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Expletives ommitted - one wonders - the airline thingo is fraught with possible hoax/fraud issues for a start - and the enthusiasm for lists which i noticed while living in yogya in an www free world in the early 90's suggest to me that the english challenged members of the wp indonesia indonesia will be thrilled and attracted to them like - well the metaphors are deleted as well - maybe there should be a separate project wp indonesia lists - it would probably be the largest wp on wikipedia (did i type all this?) oh boy lest i offend any further any later reader of this - it is true they love em - probably need to put a cap on the size and the number - merbabu will be apopplectic when he reads this - oh well out with the flak jacket and the teflon head gear nd the ear plugs - and change user name soon maybe :| SatuSuro 10:57, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is the old problem of honorifics which good javanese like so muchy - would you agree to a change to the name of article to plain old HB for encyclopediac purposes? (we dont have sir or the hon in front of oz names - why do the javanese get away with their hangups?) - your creating the divert for HB' IXs various spellings - I would have thought a move to plain old HB would be much better - and leave the honorifics to within the article SatuSuro 08:33, 11 May 2008 (UTC) Fine - may try in a day or so - no realy big deal but its the creep - as things like that slip in (the HB's of earlier numbers have no such appelations in art titles) and the world is created in the eyes of the eds who put it it - and ignore wp:mos convetions. must tell you off wiki someday my relationship with Nyi Loro Kidul on that one and a magnificent piece of theatre with knowledgable javanese academics and my big mouth oz style - but not here - and later - cheers SatuSuro 08:45, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe you misunderstood? "Awakening"

[edit]

Hmmm. Strange remark on the Indon National Awakening page. Did you not read thru the comments? There's a big diff between a page titled Renville Agreement and one titled an Awakening. "Renville Agreement" is something any party can use; ditto for Yalta or the Russian Revolution or what have you. An "Awakening" is itself the biased word applied to a very complex period of history. Surely you see the difference. And moreover, it's not a term which all people use--e.g. "The Renaissance" is a hugely ideological and problematic term, but we all know it, use it, and are (probably) stuck with it. "Indonesian Natinoal Awakening" has no such cache, reification, or convenience. Instead it purges and sculps a massive historical swath according to a very narrow nationalist theme. As I said before, this cultivation of "Indonesia," "Indonesians," and so forth is arguably the most important aspect of the history. But "awakening" is a very dicey term to use. I hope that makes more sense. Sorry if I didn't make my case more clearly before. Best, Smilo Don (talk) 04:48, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

English use in Indonesian article + Barnstar

[edit]

I saw the discussion here, and I strongly support the idea. I hope this continues to a vote to ultimately decide the date format used in Indonesian-related article. But there is problem: Indonesians (except me and some small number of people) uses American English, which means if this proporsal is agreed, then we will have British date format system and American spelling. To be honest, I'd rather have it entirely in British English than American English.

Also, I'd like to give you barnstar. It is kind of embarrasing that I, an Indonesian, have much smaller contribution than you in Indonesian topic. I got to admit that I now make more edits to political topic relating to your country (UK) than Indonesian-related topic combined.

Ha. Don't worry about it. The correct location was Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of programmes broadcast by TV ONE (Indonesia), which I probably should have included in the edit summary. In the future, the easiest way to get the right page is by clicking the link that is shown on the article's page in the AFD template that is added by {{subst:afd1}}. Besides that, there were no problems. And I hope you don't think that I'm constantly watching you :-), I just periodically check the AFD page, and if there are mistakes I try to fix them myself. Oh is he not? I was asking about this map, an Indonesian province vector map. However in that image only borders and coastlines are represented as vectors, and not provinces. For example in this map, each US state is a vector (shape) and thus it is easier to colourise the provinces to represent some data, for example, election results (like this one). Arkwatem (talk) 06:22, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm I see. How did you colour the provinces? Paint bucket? It must have been tedious, since there are many islands here and there. Thanks! Arkwatem (talk) 07:25, 12 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

There's a well respected Australian journalist who gives his 'insights' into Indonesian history because he lived around Jakarta for a couple of decades. The problem is that he assumes popular attitudes were and will be the driving forces for RI decisions. Javaneses culture had little to do with Sukarno's motives before, during and after the Pacific war, and had little to do with collaborations between the military, Bechtel, Exxon, Freeport, NewMont, and the new political parties. Political and economic leaders make most decisions for their own interests, and not the public's; the public on the other hand are subject to the education and media publications they have experienced for ten or twenty years. It is Jarkarta which has shaped Indonesian beliefs and offical hisory, not the other way around.

There are serious academic publications outside of the US Jakarta sphere, but these are not popular with people who have been taught to believe the approved history. Try Penders and Bernhard Dahm as examples; or better yet, read through the newspapers and other periodicals being published at the time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.106.228.67 (talk) 00:16, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lucky. In here, I can only access TVOne with very low quality. I believe you used to say that our positions are opposite of each other. I am Indonesian in UK, and you are British in Indonesia. Well, UK will have election soon on 4 June 2009 - normally I don't sleep, just like last year's local election. About the 4th, 5th and 6th place, I did try to add it, but it seems complicated. Hello! Thanks for the comment. I was following the model of United States presidential election, 2008 when I added the election day section. However, seeing as there was nothing much to report, that section is probably unnecessary now. Perhaps we can just add the bit about KPU taking an official time period to count the vote results and would not announce the official tally until 9 May. This will give a nicer chronological flow to the article. Arsonal (talk) 18:22, 15 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Poverty a defining feature of Indonesia?

[edit]

Hello Davidlit, user:Caniago seems to enjoy his statement that "poverty is a defining feature of Indonesia". I have been trying to explain that : 1) It is useless to oppose natural resources and poverty, since there is no example of economic succes based on natural resources and 2) Indonesia is categorised by the World Bank as a "lower middle income country", the UNDP ranks the country 109th in terms of HDI and the CIA World Factbook says that it has a Gini index of 34, meaning a much less unequal wealth distribution that for instance the US. But Caniago keeps on undoing my efforts. Since you have the same position, I will stop squabbling about Indonesia. After all, the facts are there (I do research on the country, which I visit every year), so if Wikipedia doesn't want to take these facts into account I won't insist :-). Translations

[edit]

Hi there; given that you may have little spare time at the moment, if you do have any would you care to add WP:PNT to your watchlist? There are usually a few pages there written in Indonesian which need a native English speaker to translate them properly. --Anthony.bradbury"talk" 11:04, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Supersemar

[edit]

Hi Davidelit! I wanted to let you know that I have found a scan of the other version of Supersemar. It is uploaded in the Commons. Cheers! Arsonal (talk) 08:57, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'll see if I can find out for you. Cornell's library is pretty comprehensive, and maybe it has this version in some of the official government publications. It also has 30 Tahun Indonesia Merdeka so I can verify that it is different. I've been meaning to go back there anyway. Cheers! Arsonal (talk) 14:34, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Jealousy in the supreme - cornell library crawling is not on my itinerary, unfortunately I'll be passing by amtrak train sometime in late august but cannot afford the stop time or money wise :( SatuSuro 15:38, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well let me know if you need me to look up anything. I'm more than willing to help while I'm still here. :) Arsonal (talk) 16:05, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, thanks for the offer. Anything you come across on the 1959 dismissal of Suharto as Pangdam Diponegoro, the 1957 local election results (in which the PKI did very well) or the 1st October 1965 edition of Harian Rakyat (with the pro-G30S cartoon) would really be of service to Wikipedia. And of course, if you discover the original of the Supersemar :-D Hope you don't regret your very generous offer... Davidelit (talk) 16:37, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'll see what I can do about the other requests. Do you have specific sources I could possibly try to find? I found a Supersemar copy released by the Ministry of Information on 28 March. This text is also slightly different. I'll send you a copy later. I'm thinking the scan I uploaded previously was another copy made later during the Suharto era. I'm gonna have to check if I'm able to get another copy of the document because some of it is in the Annex and non-circulating. So many versions floating around! Also, I'm wondering if you have the Pambudi book referenced in the Supersemar article? Arsonal (talk) 17:53, 26 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A gift

[edit]

Ask and you shall receive: [3]. (Sorry for the large file size, 43 MiB.) Included are photos of:

  • Supersemar as released by the Ministry of Information on 28 March 1966. These are only two pages of a booklet that contains other official documents that followed up on Supersemar, mostly authorized by Suharto, including the arrest list of 15 ministers and the names for the Second Revised Dwikora Cabinet.
  • Communist Party of Indonesia data for the 1957 local elections and related information from:
  • Hindley, Donald (1964), The Communist Party of Indonesia, 1951–1963, Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, pp. 222–229, 263–266, OCLC 264434.
  • van der Kroef, Justin M. (1965), The Communist Party of Indonesia: Its History, Program, and Tactics, Vancouver: University of British Columbia, pp. 91–93, OCLC 1059066.

I have found the call numbers for a microfiche archive of Harian Rakjat. I will look at these next time to see if I can find what you want. Cheers! Arsonal (talk) 05:29, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So apparently the (Friday) 1 October 1965 issue of Harian Rakjat has nothing on G30S. I suppose news didn't travel that fast back then, so everything about G30S is on the (Saturday) 2 October issue. I scanned you the entire front page (with several parts blown up) in a PDF here. I'm not sure if those were the cartoon images you were talking about because I found no cartoons on the 1 October issue. These cartoons are published weekly on Saturdays to summarize events from the previous week (Sunday – Saturday). The notes on the collection says Harian Rakjat was banned on 16 July 1959 (if you didn't know that already). Enjoy! Arsonal (talk) 20:22, 28 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suharto

[edit]

Did the GS30 take over the Palace? Ricklefs uses the term "commanded" which is inappropriate according to our esteemed GA reviewer, and another source I have says "take over". I thought the insurgents didn't actually enter. PS - a photo would be great. Your mission, should you choose to accept it... --Merbabu (talk) 16:07, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

re spelling - most of my sources use English/Aust spelling and these are now the majority of the article's cites. It just grated me that the article was in one language and the sources in another. --Merbabu (talk) 16:13, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OK - I've now added a rather convoluted explanation of what was occupied, etc. DO you think it is correct? Do you think it could be better worded - feel free. --Merbabu (talk) 16:23, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to get this article ultimately to FA. What do you think it needs? Is it kind of in the correct direction? --Merbabu (talk) 16:31, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your feeble NGO Leftist drivel is being reverted. You will kindly respect a native of the country's position on their own history as far more valid and holding greater weight than your own marginally educated and highly biased pro-Australian view. Neo-colonialism and smug moral superiority masquerading as freedom of speech" or "balanced reportage" remain equally ugly. I suggest you keep your op-ed Leftist (uncorroborated by any peer-reviewed document or reputable organisation) moralising to yourself. My edit...

was not vandalism, but removed anti-atheist POV. The two words ("still-existing") that I removed suggested that atheists are somehow expected/supposed/scheduled to disappear in Indonesia).--130.237.199.85 (talk) 13:48, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unusually I find myself disagreeing with David on this one. But have I missed something? Although the anon editor could have provided a better edit summary. --Merbabu (talk) 13:53, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I stand corrected. I removed it entirely on the strength of the edit summary. Davidelit (talk) 14:22, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'm glad that this wasn't about bad faith on anybody's part. I know that in this imperfect world of ours, it's a bad idea to write ironic edit summaries and edit as an IP at the same time, but sometimes I'm too irritated to help it.--130.237.199.85 (talk) 14:34, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Returning to your original point - atheists are most certainly supposed to have disappeared in the late 1960s when being an atheist meant being a communist. This, together with the fact that all Indonesians are expected to follow one of the six authorized religions and that religious faith is a precondition for many jobs, arguably justifies the "still existing" in the article. I've been here 13 years now, and I've only met one. And he's already left the country! Davidelit (talk) 14:44, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This issue belongs in the article Religion in Indonesia, and if you do have a reliable source about the dynamics of the atheist population in Indonesia during the 20th century, then such info would be very valuable in that article (ditto for communists, though this would belong in Politics of Indonesia). Even in these articles, implying the future disappearance of these groups without a reliable source making that precition explicitly would be OR and highly POV: declining numbers is one thing and disappearance is another. And given the conditions that both you and the article describe, it would only be possible to discuss the number of open or self-professed atheists.
But back to the point - in the article that I edited, the context of the sentence was the argument that obligatory monotheism in the Constitution violates the human rights (freedom of conscience) of atheists. The exact number and the way it has changed through the century is completely irrelevant for the legitimacy of that argument. Worse still, adding such claims in this specific context actually implies that it is somehow OK to violate the rights of atheists, because there are so few of them and they'll soon disappear completely anyway.--130.237.199.85 (talk) 16:43, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't disagree with any of your points, and have not re-reverted your change. Incidentally the Constitution of Indonesia only guarantees the right to have a religious belief, not to not have any. Davidelit (talk) 16:52, 12 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I re-did the resignation section. Could you please cast your eyes over it? It could handle a few more details. What do you think?

ON a related note, I moved three whole paragraphs about the 1996 PDI drama into the section above. 3 paragraphs on an article about Suharto's life is a little excessive in my opinion. --Merbabu (talk) 01:46, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • then moved Bandung Institute of Tecnology to Institut Teknologi Bandung including talk page.
  • then made Institut Teknologi Bandung and talk page redirects to Bandung Institute of Technology preserving the edit history. Gnangarra 10:49, 24 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PKI 1957 and political parties

[edit]

Hey David. I found some more data about PKI's performance in the 1957 local elections (though this one focuses on Java). This is in Robert Cribb's Historical Atlas of Indonesia, which has pretty nice charts and maps for many things. Also, I noticed you were the one who created {{Infobox Indonesian political party}}. Would it be possible to add a parameter for a party's dissolution to use in articles like Indonesian Democratic Party? Arsonal (talk) 05:19, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is a fact. It's still a good thing you rollbacked the edit, but remember; I have reverted the rollback, and I wish you to prevent any more rollbacks with that edit, since I am still trying to find a link to the fact itself. I will not consider this as a violation of WP:OWN. Boeing7107isdelicious|SPRiCh miT meineN PiloteN 08:24, 8 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
