October to December 2012 Milhist Peer, A-class and FAC reviews

The Content Review Medal of Merit
By order of the Military History WikiProject coordinators, for your devoted work on the WikiProject's Peer, A-Class and Featured Article Candidate reviews for the period Oct–Dec 2012, I am delighted to award you this Content Review Medal. AustralianRupert (talk) 10:18, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm still a bit puzzled by your close of that AfD. Since when is "redirect" not a valid outcome of a deletion discussion? This is the first time I've come across that kind of reasoning, and I could not find anything regarding this in the deletion policies, either, so I'd really like some clarification in that regard. --Conti| 10:37, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

  • I've already given an extensive reply here, which you may like to read. In short, the article in question had no chance of being deleted, and as such an AFD (especially one as contentious as that) was essentially moot. If there were clearer lines or one side had substantially worse arguments, a keep or redirect outcome could have been possible. This discussion, however, was pretty much bound to be closed as no consensus. As I said in the close, a redirect discussion on the talk page may be of value. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:42, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
    • Ah, missed that, thanks. Your closing remarks gave me the impression that AfDs in general could never have a "redirect" outcome, and in that case I would have quite strongly disagreed with that. That the consensus for a redirect just wasn't clear enough in this case certainly makes a lot more sense. --Conti| 11:01, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

DYK for Two (film)

Hello. Recently you have promoted a DYK for Two (1964 film). I am not sure whether it was intentional but neither original ALT or ALT1, which was actually passed, has been promoted. The one in prep3 is with different wordings. Just curious. - Vivvt • (Talk) 14:59, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Ok. So would you like to go with the currently promoted hook or ALT1? - Vivvt • (Talk) 15:04, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
I prefer ALT1, if you are ok with it. - Vivvt • (Talk) 15:08, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the update. - Vivvt • (Talk) 15:19, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Your Featured picture candidate has been promoted
Your nomination for featured picture status, File:Judith Leyster - Self-Portrait - Google Art Project.jpg, gained a consensus of support, and has been promoted. If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates. Armbrust The Homunculus 23:06, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Crisco, I was hoping you could handle this one. The Background section has gone from all quotes after the first two sentences to something better; I'd like you to decide whether it's far enough, as I've hit my limit here. Thanks, and my apologies. If you have time, I was wondering if you could look at the final (Turkey) hook in Prep 4 to gauge whether POV is an issue. And since I'm definitely not welcome there, Template:Did you know nominations/Make the World Move‎, where the Background section is said to be rewritten from the imported version, and I'll let you judge whether the changes are enough. (Yes, I think I'm getting closer to burnout. I'm going to do something else for a while. Many thanks for your patience.) BlueMoonset (talk) 00:36, 14 January 2013 (UTC)

Indonesian Cineman Award
For your high quality work on Indonesian cinema which astounds me; when I initially created the list of Indonesian films I never imagined it would be possible to even get some of the older movies beyond start status let alone to GA quality. ♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 12:40, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

The consensus in this discussion seemed to me to either be keep or no consensus (there was a 7-5-2 split in keep-delete-merge). Please reconsider your close, particularly considering we have a whole category of articles dedicated to such pages.—Ryulong (琉竜) 02:53, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

I've waited for what feels like a suitable length of time for a response, so I've requested DRV to take another look.—Ryulong (琉竜) 06:42, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Very classy Ryulong, giving a working man 4 hours to get back to a reply he hasn't even read yet. As I noted at the close, the keep !votes were not based in policy and, per WP:AFD, the process is not a head count. The strength of the !votes matters. For what it's worth, iff the other article is kept I would be glad to give anyone the text from this article to merge. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 11:44, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
You seemed very quick to respond to others so I was not sure what was going on. My apologies. Also, as I state in the DRV, I'd rather create List of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers characters than merge everything to List of Power Rangers villains.—Ryulong (琉竜) 12:38, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
Usually, but these past few months have found me out of the house a lot more (although getting to the point where I can get published outside Wikipedia, in my chosen areas). The list you suggest is quite possible (although would you have Yellow Ranger / Pink Ranger etc. with their different incarnations, or the specific person?) and I'm surprised it's a redlink. I'd strongly suggest limiting it to main characters, considering the rotating cast at times. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:43, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
It's been a practice to have separate articles for the good guys and bad guys (don't ask why). Also I'd have the list set up to eliminate the standalone pages of Jason, Trini, Billy, etc. (the only problem being when characters appear in more than one differently named season), unless they can be considered notable on their own through the various sources I found that I also posted in the DRV (because you don't need 10k worth of links from google scholar on your talk).—Ryulong (琉竜) 12:54, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
LOL, no, I don't. That would be a good idea. The lists for Buffy is another one which confounds me. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:56, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
Well that's been ongoing for 16 years and there's a course you can take or something. Plus primetime adult dramas get more coverage than Saturday morning cartoons and their ilk.—Ryulong (琉竜) 12:58, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
True enough. I've yet to do an article about a fictional character, mostly because the subject area I work in doesn't usually have much coverage of them. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:02, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
It's easier with the Japanese characters as there are 4 monthly publications that talk about them constantly. Old American ones are difficult.—Ryulong (琉竜) 13:05, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
  • If only it were that easy... Indonesian characters are nay impossible unless we have specialist publications (I think the titular character of Sitti Nurbaya may be worth her own article, but don't have the sources to back that up) — Crisco 1492 (talk) 13:11, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
Well it helps that my topic area ends up overlapping with the toy market and there are a ton of hobby magazines in Japan.—Ryulong (琉竜) 13:13, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

List of unreleased Britney Spears songs

I'm a bit baffled as to why you closed this discussion as a "keep" when there was no policy-based consensus for that course of action. Many of the keep !votes were from users who were bitter that the article was delisted earlier this month, and as such their !votes held no weight to the discussion at all. The first user's !vote stems from WP:ITSUSEFUL for people to understand the artist's career, and shows that he/she didn't bother to look back at User:Richhoncho's analysis of serious sourcing issues such as copyright and WP:SYNTH violations. The WP:PERNOM !vote from the next user is not convincing in the slightest and he/she made no attempt at a decent argument for keeping the article. The next !vote stems from WP:ITSNOTABLE with no real substance, so no weight can be given to that. The last two users' !votes show that they didn't bother to look at the sourcing of the article or the deletion concerns, as the majority of these "sources" were policy and other violations. Overall, I do not think that there was a consensus to "keep" this article, especially because editors failed to address the issue pointed out by User:Richhoncho, which was that the majority of the article's sourcing fails WP:Policy. This is why Afd is not a headcount, but an analysis of the policy-based consensus. Also, the article was delisted from WP:FL for the very reason of dead links being unable to be replaced. "Trying the Wayback Machine to rescue them" is out of the question. Till 08:46, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Crisco, I've almost selected this a couple of times, but there's that "expansion needed" template on the Filmography section (which lists seven or eight films). Is this a problem? The article was created with the template.

Does the template preclude DYK promotion? If so, should it be temporarily removed while the article finishes its DYK journey? Thanks for any thoughts on this: the rules deal with unexpanded sections, but not with sections that have some material but need more. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:16, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

  • I'd temporarily remove it (and have done so). The DYK rules say the article should look reasonably complete, so I think having tags like that are theoretically capable of stopping a promotion. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:11, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

DYK: no queue; one prep

Crisco, I've just filled up a prep set (it had two hooks in it), so it can be checked and promoted at any time. That time does need to be soon—despite the midnight set being posted two hours late, apparently because of a similar lack of queue (or prep), the bot will try to promote in just under three hours (and complain in under an hour).

I'm busy this weekend, so I won't be able to make up any more sets for about 24 hours, and maybe not even then. I hope some people are around to take up the slack. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:54, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

It wasn't my intention to revdel the edit itself, just the edit summary. The edits themselves are offensive, but not mind-numbingly horrifying, and I'm a supporter of transparency first. I just wanted to get the edit summary off of the history page. Thanks for letting me know, though! :) m.o.p 09:11, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Re: Signpost question

Hey, not sure where you wanted me to respond so I'll post my Signpost bit here.

It was with great difficulty that I tried to narrow down all of the Featured List promotions of the year down to a bare few, and in the end rather than just one I came up with four that I found particularly interesting in their subject matter and impressive in their construction. These are: List of Olympic medalists in art competitions, for capturing a realm of competition I think most people do not know existed; List of chronometers on HMS Beagle, for a fascinating deep dive into a niche area that was of great importance at the time; List of battlecruisers, as one of the capstones of the incredibly massive and long-running Operation Majestic Titan project; and my personal favorite for the year, Timeline of the far future, for the sheer scope of the far-flung events it covers.

--PresN 23:55, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

I'll come back here tomorrow (hopefully) with a blurb for Signpost. I need some time to go through the FLC archives and refresh my memory. Giants2008 (Talk) 01:36, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

Okay, here goes nothing...

Many high-quality lists came through the featured list process in 2012, and I had the opportunity to review many of them. My personal favorite among 2012's promotions is Boden Professor of Sanskrit, a unique list on a University of Oxford position. The list is not one of the longest to be promoted last year, but the research behind it is impeccable and the backstory behind the creation of the position is interesting even to those who know nothing about the Sanskrit language, like myself. In addition, the work on this list led directly to the creation of a spin-off article that achieved featured article status. Boden Professor of Sanskrit shows that featured lists can be every bit as well-researched as longer articles, and that lists can be more than just a bunch of data-filled tables.

Giants2008 (Talk) 03:48, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

DYK prep to queue promotion needed in next 75 minutes

We've got another case of empty queues and a full prep waiting for promotion... though, some to think of it, it's your set, isn't it. Hmm. I've just finished a prep set myself, but I built it with hooks that are more appropriately run at the expected time (16:00 UTC; daytime in the US and Canada, with late afternoon in Europe). At any rate, it's (past) time for me to call it a night, so the prep set after the one I finished is someone else's to deal with. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:42, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

  • Sorry I wasn't quick enough and we nearly just collided—and also that I turfed out the final P1 hook for a QPQ issue so soon before the whole set would have been promoted. Hadn't realized the set was up against the gun. Thanks for fixing things, and I'll reduce the number of bios in P1 in a moment (there are five). BlueMoonset (talk) 23:56, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

  • Last night, eh? I'm waiting for this to settle down before taking an axe to it. Like at Sudirman, some context is necessary, but too much is too much — Crisco 1492 (talk) 04:16, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
    • http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Suharto&curid=217513&action=history - I mean look at it - 2 separate number ips doing the same thing - is it a sock...., is it a bird..., no its..., (fill in the space i suppose) settle down ?, nah you have it wrong sir, the narrative continuity is lacking... it needs just another mention of the crisis in... (fill in space again).. sats 14:27, 26 January 2013 (UTC)
      • This is okay, and an edit I'd do myself. This was just overload and I've reverted it. Our friends are geolocating from Britain, Japan, and Jakarta so I think it's either being rerouted or there are friends working together.15:45, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

FYI regarding a DYK

I hope it's okay, but since the DYK nomination got a little messed up and the bot missed the credit, I added the dyktalk template to Talk:Nycticebus bancanus and Talk:Nycticebus borneanus. – Maky « talk » 22:14, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

The King and I is at FAC

Hi, Crisco. The King and I has been nominated for FAC. I see that you have reviewed FACs in the performing arts area before. It would be great if you could take a look at the article and give comments at the FAC. Thanks for any time you could spare! -- Ssilvers (talk) 00:28, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Need another third opinion

Hi there Crisco, thanks for your help with Template:Did you know nominations/Henning Hauger. I was wondering if you could help out on another nomination aswell. I bumped into Template:Did you know nominations/List of notable visitors to Tsitsernakaberd, when building a prep-set, and could not promote it as the hook wasn't written in the article and backed up by a reliable source. So basically, I have been trying to get him to propose another hook, while the nominator ignores my review and puts the , to get another reviewer along. I orIginally wanted to find another hook, but I find it hard to help a guy who have a somewhat aggresive tone against me. What do you think I should do with the nomination? DYK nomination of Ratna Moetoe Manikam

Hello! Your submission of Ratna Moetoe Manikam at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Rosiestep (talk) 21:21, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

DYK for Enam Djam di Jogja

The DYK project (nominate) 08:03, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Crisco, can you let me know if I'm offbase here or not? The two-article submission had two QPQs submitted with it, both by Nvvchar. One of them, the Indian one, I recognized: it was an article I had considered for promotion the other night, but had to reject because it had only 1363 prose characters, among other issues. So I did something I've never done before, and posted a ? icon along with the question of whether QPQ credit should be granted, under the circumstances. (I also had a question about the Idaho rivers list, which while 1583 prose characters, spends a good chunk of that talking about sources and units used in the list table, which seemed to me belonged in a non-prose key of some sort. I've now posted to that article's review as well with a ? icon.)

Oddly enough, I'd just had a fairly new DYK contributor, SagaciousPhil, ask about a similar issue on my talk page: he'd just had one of his reviews (a tick) given a ? by DivaKnockouts, who said that the hook wasn't really accurate and suggested a change to it to make it accurate (adding one key word, as it happens, but it seems to have been a necessary change). The question was whether this addition counted as something for which it's appropriate to claim a QPQ credit. I think it could be, depending on how much checking went into it, though I'd never claim one myself under the circumstances.

Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:09, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

  • For the first one, I agree with you that Nvvchar should not claim it because it seems (s)he didn't do much looking at the article. For the second one, I'd allow it to be claimed but remind the user to be careful in checking hooks. Everyone here is human (I think, although there are some who claim to worms or raptors or the like), and we can all miss things. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:13, 27 January 2013 (UTC)
  • I appreciate the quick response, and the point-of-view reminder. This is yet another reason why I prefer reviews that state what was checked. (Incidentally, I'm not actually a moon. Not that I ever claimed to be...)
I don't though hehe! Crisco can you find anything sources for Arbir, I can't.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 23:02, 27 January 2013 (UTC)

Well done on the Darah GA, if you want to work on more let me know.♦ Dr. ☠ Blofeld 22:52, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Crisco, can I ask you to take a look at this one? I'm really not sure what ought to be done here; are the sourcing issues germane? One way or another, it's been three weeks, and I'd like to get this moving again. If it does need action, please ping Piotrus on his talk page, since he doesn't seem to notice developments on his nomination templates. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:22, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

  • Thanks for looking. I've just checked, and make it 424 characters based on the one secondary source out of 1700+ total, or less than a quarter of the article. Did you want to deliver the bad news? (In a completely unrelated matter, one of the prep areas will need to be promoted within the next five hours... ) BlueMoonset (talk) 02:51, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi, Crisco. This comment of mine didn't get posted before that subsection on the Talk page was archived:

Thank you, sir! You have single-handedly restored my faith in the admin corps with your kind response. --108.45.72.196 (talk) 17:14, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

I haven't forgotten about this. If you're still interested, I can start working my way through it - but I'll be slow. Dunno if you ever opened a PR or not, but if you'd prefer to go that route that would be fine. I had intended to read it eventually but couldn't get to it when you asked earlier. Anyway, let me know your schedule and what works best for you. Truthkeeper (talk) 02:18, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

  • Oops, sorry to hear that. I've missed a lot. Anyway, let me know if/when you want another set of eyes. I'm in a reviewing mood because I'm not writing much at the moment. Truthkeeper (talk) 02:26, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

George Ronan

Hi, Crisco. Ensign George Ronan was killed on the site of what became Chicago on 15 August 1812 during the worldwide conflict of the Napoleonic Wars, which in the USA we call the War of 1812. There is substantial evidence that Ronan was the first graduate of the United States Military Academy to be killed in combat, and editors have gathered citable evidence to this effect. Thanks for taking an interest in this article, and I guess I'm here to ask if you have any more questions, as your earlier questions were good ones.Bigturtle (talk) 03:10, 29 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi Crisco, I saw that my nomination was rejected. Could you please give me a couple of days to re-phrase the article completely? This is my first wiki contribution and I was not aware of the exact rules regarding close paraphrasing. I understand that somethings need to be reworked upon, but the contents of the article are definitely worth the main page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prachi.chitnis (talkcontribs) 13:57, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Request for peer review

Hi! Since you are a veteran in film-related (and many other) featured articles, may I please request you to opine in the peer review of the film Mother India. If you have shortage of time, can you at least read the lead, and see if it is interesting enough (and error-free)? Of course, we'll be elated if you read the whole article and provide feedback. I am particularly worried about the theme section since IMO that lacks a good flow. Thanks a lot in advance. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 00:01, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

  • Hi! thanks a lot for your effort. We are answering the peer review page gradually. For some points, I will have to refer to Chatterjee book. I have the book, but I may not be able to do it over the weekend. Please continue your peer review, We'll address all the points. Some of my replies need your re-look, as I have posed some questions for your further suggestions. Regards, and again, thanks a lot. Bye the way (just curious), did you find the lead interesting, or at least, not-too-boring?--Dwaipayan (talk) 06:34, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
  • It was okay, but I'll have to finish reviewing the article before I can give further comments about it. I'm working on my thesis right now, but after I've done that for a couple hours I'll get back to the review. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:36, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Cause for the record I'm taking it as a Third Language. Not very conversational with it, though. Cheers. Bonkers The Clown (Nonsensical Babble) 09:18, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
  • Aplologies, I have yet to hone my comprehension and conversational Indonesian skills to an advanced level. Currently, I speak like how a local child speaks. :P You something something and you something something for six years in Indonesia? Haha, I probably would stick to English for the time being. • LoL. "I'm fluent enough, yes. I've lived in Indonesia for six years now." Interesting language to learn. The grammar is, in its way, both easier and more difficult than English. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 09:44, 2 February 2013 (UTC)
