DYK for Salah Asuhan (film)
On 23 November 2012, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Salah Asuhan (film), which you created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that the use of nature in Asrul Sani's 1972 film The Misfit has been compared to works by Japanese directors? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Salah Asuhan (film). You are welcome to check how many hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, quick check) and it will be added to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page. |

Need admin for DYK queue
Crisco, I'm sorry to bother you directly but I pointed out the problem with the lead hook in Queue 6 on the DYK talk page about 12 hours ago, and the hook has neither been fixed (I left a suggestion) or pulled. One or the other needs to happen, since part of the hook is unsourced, and is only alluded to in one of the article's image captions. BlueMoonset (talk) 15:03, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

DYK queues empty; need to promote one within 2.5 hours
Crisco, in case you see this soon and the queues are still empty, it would help a great deal to promote at least one of the three prep areas to the next queue before 0800 UTC. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 05:26, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Frank's Cock just promoted
Crisco, I just put the Frank's Cock DYK being held for World AIDS Day into Prep 4, which I chose because that was the only slot where the article would run at some point on December 1 everywhere in the world. That does mean that in Canada, where the film originated, the west coast only sees it midnight through 0800, but I thought it was a worthwhile tradeoff to catch the wider community (including, obviously, Indonesia). It can certainly be moved to a later prep area once one becomes available, if you'd prefer. Let me know, and if you want I'm happy to move it to the next prep area. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 22:31, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Commons
I see you are also at Commons, so I'm asking your help. I've nominated an image for deletion. File:Colonel_James_Bowie_painting_in_the_Alamo.jpg Info at Commons says I didn't fill in everything needed, and I'm unsure how to proceed.
This file is a hoax and needs to be removed. It's not just simply mis-identified. The fine print on the image makes it look like the Alamo has ths painting on their wall. The Alamo is run by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas who would certainly know this is not Jim Bowie. An unregistered editor uploaded it on Commons and put it on Jim Bowie in March 2012. I removed it from Bowie's page.
The image I'm asking to be deleted is, in fact, one of the most famous and widely distributed images of Davy Crockett. You can see it on the cover of this Book. It needs to be deleted rather than re-named, because it's been Photo-shopped to make it look like an old postcard identified as Jim Bowie.
Thank you for your help. — Maile (talk) 23:37, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

Sy terinspirasi
Kak, Alhamdulillah, kak. Sy terinspirasi oleh artikel kakak Andjar Asmara. Itulah yg membuat sy terpikir utk membuat artikel pendek (AP, nama lain Artikel Pilihan=Featured Article) jalak suren. --Adi.akbartauhidin 14:52, 1 December 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adi.akbartauhidin (talk • contribs)
- Wah, kalau burung saya kurang tahu deh.
--Adi.akbartauhidin 15:05, 1 December 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adi.akbartauhidin (talk • contribs)

Pied Myna
Believe me, I've had more unorthodox requests on my talk page, some of which are physically impossible ;) Google Translate adds an extra dimension of fun, but the article is obviously based on the English, which helps.
- The lead doesn't adequately summarise the main text
- Distribution is confusing, there's actually more under Taxonomy than than Distribution, it needs a clear description of the range on the lines of "breeds in south and southeast Asia from India east to Indonesia. Introduced to..."
- There is nothing about the habitat except "near water". Trees? Bushes? Grassland?
- Under Behaviour, it might be worth separating breeding and feeding
- Predators and parasites is a section that's worth adding if there is enough content, but it's often surprising difficult to find RS predators, let alone parasites
- Gracupica should be italicised
- Neither version explains or links the Sema Nagas
- I'll have a look in my starlings book later, can't get it yet while the household slumbers

- Distribution and habitat: Expanding west into Pakistan... spread into Sumatra aided by deforestation... habitat is lowland open areas with scattered trees near water, often near human habitation... often at sewage farms and refuse tips

Terang Boelan
Congratulations on this article's promotion. As reward (or punishment, depending on what you think of the TFA system!) I have scheduled it for the next available TFA slot, on Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 14, 2012. Let me know if there's any problem with this. DYK is almost late... again
Crisco, normally I wouldn't write you in the middle of your night, but I see you posted a few minutes ago... There are a couple of finished preps, and one needs to be promoted in the next 90 minutes. If you can, that would be great. Thanks! BlueMoonset (talk) 22:29, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

Bugle interview
Hi Crisco. The Bugle runs a semi-regular interview series where we ask various editors to discuss a particular topic. Our next interview aims to bring together editors working in areas of military history that are perhaps under-represented in the English Wikipedia, for instance Indonesian history. Would you mind adding your views to the questions here? Our goal is to despatch this edition prior to Christmas, so if you can respond in the next two weeks, that'd be great. Thanks/cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 13:30, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

citation question
Here's a situation not anticipated by template:citation: an old magazine article is reprinted in a modern book. How would you recommend I handle this?
<ref name=Scudder>Scudder, Samuel H. "Look at your fish", originally published in ''Every Saturday'', April 4, 1874, 16, 369–370; reprinted in Erlandson, David A. et al. ''[http://books.google.com/books?id=mOawndGmMsIC Doing Naturalistic Inquiry: A Guide to Methods]'', Sage Publications, 1993, pg. 1–4</ref>
The rest of the citations are coming along nicely. With the exception of Worley and some wikification I think they're good to go.
GaramondLethe 08:45, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
- This particular one could easily be done manually. If you want to do it with a cite template, I'd do it like this: <ref name=Scudder>{{cite journal|author=Scudder, Samuel H. | title=Look at Your Fish |journal=Every Saturday |date=April 4, 1874 |volume=16| pages=369–370}}, reprinted in {{cite book |url=http://books.google.com/books?id=mOawndGmMsIC |title=Doing Naturalistic Inquiry: A Guide to Methods |year=1993 |pages=1–4|publisher=Sage Publications}}</ref> — Crisco 1492 (talk) 16:25, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
- Aha! Got it. Thanks! GaramondLethe 00:10, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
Main page appearance: Terang Boelan
This is a note to let the main editors of Terang Boelan know that the article will be appearing as today's featured article on December 14, 2012. You can view the TFA blurb at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/December 14, 2012. If you prefer that the article appear as TFA on a different date, or not at all, please ask featured article director Raul654 (talk · contribs) or his delegates Dabomb87 (talk · contribs), Gimmetoo (talk · contribs), and Bencherlite (talk · contribs), or start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests. If the previous blurb needs tweaking, you might change it—following the instructions at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/requests/instructions. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. The blurb as it stands now is below:
Terang Boelan is a 1937 film from the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Written by Saeroen, directed by Albert Balink, and starring Rd Mochtar, Roekiah and E. T. Effendi, Terang Boelan follows two lovers who elope after one is nearly forced to marry an opium smuggler. The film was shot in the Indies and Singapore, and was partially inspired by the 1936 Hollywood film The Jungle Princess. It was aimed at native audiences and included kroncong music, which was popular at the time, and several actors from Balink's previous work Pareh (1936). Terang Boelan was a commercial success in both the Indies and abroad (under the title Full Moon), earning 200,000 Straits dollars in British Malaya. This success revived the faltering domestic film industry and inspired films aimed at Malay audiences in Malaya, creating a formula of songs, beautiful scenery and romance that was followed for decades afterwards. Modern critical reception of the film, which has been lost since at least the 1970s, has generally been positive. The Indonesian film historian Misbach Yusa Biran described it as a turning point in the history of Indonesian cinema for its catalytic effect on the industry's growth. (Full article...)

Crisco, could I ask you to take a quick look at this nomination? The reviewer has AGFed the hook because the sourcing is in Indonesian; under the circumstances, given how much else needed to be fixed along the way, I'd feel happier if someone who read Indonesian could give a final check to confirm the hook's accuracy. List of beaches of Indonesia
Hi Crisco. I just added four more references for Gandoriah Beach. One from the TEMPO magazine, one from Amazing Indonesia (unfortunately the host looks blog-like? not sure about it?), and two from books (one a Minangkabau Encyclopedia, other a research on Minang culture). Crisco, can I ask you to take over this one? Frankly, I don't have the taste for pursuing it, and I'd like someone else to handle the "is it at 5x or not" calculation, if it's necessary. I've found so many A5 violations lately that it's getting discouraging, and I'd like at least one taken off my hands.
On a completely different note, Template:Did you know nominations/Vanderbilt exoskeleton was pulled from the main page by TParis after an hour and three-quarters for sourcing issues. My question is: do we leave it as "promoted" on the theory that it's had its chance and blew it, or do we pull it back and see if it can be corrected before throwing it back out. (I'm trying to remember whether there's a time period after which we don't bother to rerun it.) Thanks.
(I don't think you know about Wikipedia:Did you know/Removed as a place to record whenever a hook is pulled back from the main page, a queue, or a prep area. I'm pretty sure I've been adding your hook removals to the list for the last little while, and while I'm happy to continue if I see one that hasn't been recorded there, it's probably best if you do the additions yourself.) BlueMoonset (talk) 00:57, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- Wow, lots of questions:
- I will look into it, but Piotr has to recognise that rules are rules. We already have something for uncited stuff: it is counted no matter how bad the original article.
- If it's MEDRS I can't comment in much detail (don't get that policy, to be honest, as it's well outside my area) but I would not be averse to letting it have a go (i.e. a rereview). Not sure if Fast CoExist is reliable.
- That's my fault, I keep forgetting we're supposed to do that. I'll try to do that if I have to pull one from prep / queue. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:46, 13 December 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry about the long list. Thanks for taking over the Magnates; I really appreciate it. I'll also leave Vanderbilt for you to rescue or not as you decide. Just in case you're around
the next DYK promotion is supposed to be in about 25 minutes, and the queues are bare. The bot has already warned everyone on the talk page, but no response in 90+ minutes, so I'm hoping you or someone else can show up and get things moving again. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 01:09, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- As you can see, Orlady did a manual queue-and-main-page a couple of hours later. However, she did not empty the queue afterward, so Queue 3 still has (as of this writing) the same Van Helsing lead hook and set as the main page has, and unless someone intervenes and blanks that queue and moves the next queue to be loaded to Queue 4 (which needs to be loaded from Prep 2), the same set of hooks will be loaded from that same queue by the bot in another six hours. I've asked both Orlady and Shubinator to clear the queues if they see my messages, but I think Orlady's retired for the night, and I have no idea whether Shubinator will see my request or not. I'm hoping you see this in the next few hours... Thanks as always! BlueMoonset (talk) 04:58, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- Looks like Orlady got it (about 20 minutes ago, so as I was getting home). Sorry, I seem to have been supervising tests when you pinged me (8 a.m. my time). — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:36, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- My timing is definitely impeachable. ;-) Do you think, now that she's emptied Queue 3, you could reset the next queue to be loaded so it's Queue 4? And, if you'd like, load up Queue 4 from Prep 2 so we have something ready to go? I won't be around overnight to sound the alarm in four hours... Up to you: I know it takes time to do all the necessary checks while bringing a set from prep to queue. You definitely want to make sure I didn't screw up in checking the prep set! ;-) Um, if that's you moving Prep 2 to Queue 3 again, could you move it to Queue 4 instead? It's odd to have the same queue be loaded up twice... BlueMoonset (talk) 05:45, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- Fair enough... not sure how I'm supposed to organise which queue is loaded first though. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:49, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- Actually, come to think of it it doesn't really matter. The bot should update from queue 3 with no problem. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:52, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- Ah well. It's always a bit strange when the even-to-even and odd-to-odd mapping between prep and queue gets broken: normally, every third run through the prep set the preps and queues have the same numbers, while the rest of the time they're four or two away. When it gets like this with even to odd and odd to even, nothing maps properly, and I keep having to doublecheck until things magically straighten out through another error. I'll survive the discombobulation somehow; the important thing is that there is a queue ready to go. Thank you so much for getting that set up. BlueMoonset (talk) 06:30, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- You're welcome. I've been thinking that the numbers are just making it confusing. Why not "Q RED", "Q BLUE", etc., to make it clear they are in no particular order? Oh well... — Crisco 1492 (talk) 06:41, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Need advice
I've been dealing with a user that appears to be a single-purpose account for self-promotional editing on a particular doctor's work. The account failed to disclose this COI at most articles (though it did at a few), and has acknowledged sock-puppeting from IP addresses on a relevant talk page to argue against removal of his journal article. I've undone a lot of this account's damage (its main objective was to adjust Wikipedia articles to state, based solely on a paper he co-authored, that Franklin D. Roosevelt probably had Guillain-Barre Syndrome rather than polio), but the editor continues to rage and has accused me of threatening and harassing him. You can see more detail and diffs at Wikipedia:AN/I#User:Dagoldman.
Users will be users, but what's frustrating is that so far I can't get anyone from WP:COI/N or WP:AN/I to look at this user's behavior, despite starting threads at each. I'm not CANVASSing for your involvement, but I did want advice: what forum would you approach for an issue like this? I'm tired of dealing with this guy and his sock puppets alone, and I'd love to hand the baton to a neutral party and take a long WikiVacation. What's the next step when no one picks up the phone at AN/I? -- Khazar2 (talk) 13:56, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- I'm surprised, actually. Maybe it's the holidays? Mind you, his additions were a long time ago (four years+) and have not entirely survived. He doesn't seem to have edited the Roosevelt pages recently — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:03, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- Also, the blocking policy is for ongoing stuff. If it's four years ago, there's no immediate danger so no block. Sorry. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:07, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- No problem; I don't really want him blocked. Mostly I just wanted someone else to 1) per Dagoldman's request, look at if I was in fact harassing this user and 2) explain to the user our policy on COI and sock puppets. I realize he's no longer actively editing, at least under his name, but doesn't sock-puppeting apply to talk pages as well? He's still active at Talk:Franklin D. Roosevelt's paralytic illness as of 12 hours ago, and for years he appears to have been blocking all removal of his research without (until his slip last night) disclosing his COI and the fact that he was the Wiki article's primary author. -- Khazar2 (talk) 14:21, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- Oh, and thanks so much for looking at this! -- Khazar2 (talk) 14:22, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- Darn, you're right, I missed that. I'll drop a friendly warning. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 15:43, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Thanks!
Thanks for pulling together a DYK prep set. I noticed you've already picked up one of the ones I couldn't because I either reviewed it or proposed an ALT; there are another half dozen or so out there, so if another one or two fit your current set for balance and daytime appearance, that would be great. Bingung
— Crisco 1492 (talk) 05:50, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
- Sekalian, kak. Kirim salam buat kak Jim F., mungkin tanpa dia, sy ini bakal kekurangan di sana-sini pada semua bagian artikel Pied Myna sy mulai dari pembuka hingga penutup artikel sy. --Adi.akbartauhidin 06:14, 19 December 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Adi.akbartauhidin (talk • contribs)

Tomcat7
I have mentioned your name over at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Tomcat7. I have filed the RFC/U against Tomcat7 for multiple issues including edit warring and adding false references to articles. I know this may seem a bit strange, as you did just recently warn him about edit warring just after he removed my warning. I've taken it to RFC/U. ChrisGualtieri (talk) 16:49, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
- Looked it over, replied on your talk page. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 22:34, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, I posted a bit on my talk page and I posted on the article talk page. Probably this stems from a confusion of the words and a run on sentence lacking clarity. Unfortunately, Tomcat7 has edit warred after an RFC/U was opened about his edit warring. Your name just came up because you warned Tomcat7 about edit warring (albeit at a different page). I quickly moved to discourage any bringing of the Golden Eagle matter up, it is a content dispute at this point. It is not a conduct matter.
