Question

[edit]

Enough. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:27, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Why did you make these edits, removing these articles from their Good Topic statuses? Those edits would have gone unnoticed and mess up the Featured Topic process. GamerPro64 16:25, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@GamerPro64: for precisely the reason that I stated in the edit summary to which you linked: — Please use only categories which actually exist. See WP:REDNOT. The topic categs to which they had been added did not exist. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:28, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I forgot to make them. I could have at least been messaged about that. GamerPro64 16:29, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@GamerPro64: If there were infinite hours in the day and I chose to devote even more of them to cleaning up Special:WantedCategories, then I could indeed identify the editor responsible for every such error and write a customised message. But there isn't so can't.
May I suggest that you take a wee step back and consider how much nicer it would have been for everyone if instead of ignoring the edit summary, you had chosen to either just finish whatever you intended to do with categorising these FAs and move on, or alternatively come here and say something along the lines of "thanks, BHG, for fixing my error. Now cleaned up". --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:37, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You didn't actually fix any error. You removed piping of these articles being part of Good Topics. I had to put them back into the talk page and then make the categories to remedy the issue. I didn't even know about these removals until I looked through them while processing another Good Topic nomination. GamerPro64 16:43, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@GamerPro64: I did fix an error: see WP:REDNOT:

A page in any Wikipedia namespace should never be left in a red-linked category. Either the category should be created, or else the non-existent category link should be removed or changed to one that exists.

I don't know why you continue to ignore REDNOT, since it was linked in the original edit summary and linked above ... but whatever the reason, it is becoming annoying. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:47, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
PS @GamerPro64: you statement that I removed piping of these articles being part of Good Topics is untrue. These articles were not in any good topics category, because you had not added them to any existing good topics category. I am sure that was a good faith error on your part, but when you come here to repeatedly accuse me of having broken something, I do need to point out that this was your error. If you want to treat this as a blame game, please stop blaming me for your error, and accept responsibility. But better still, please stop looking for a culprit. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:03, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm just saying that the piping should not be removed because it would screw around with the Good Topic process. GamerPro64 17:06, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sigh. @GamerPro64: The only screwing around with the Good Topic process was the addition of the page to a non-existent topic category.
As above, I assume that was a good faith error ... but I have had more than enough of you complaining to me about efforts to fix your error, so I am closing this discussion. Feel free to come here to discuss anything else, but this discussion is over.
Have a nice day. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:26, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reversion of page move of List of game manufacturers

[edit]

Hi, I'm new at this, so just trying to understand what happened, in the tidy up of List of game manufacturers I changed the categories to somthing that didn't exist, hence the reversion (my mistake). But it also reverted the page move as well. Is that because the category change and the edits are considered the same edit as the page move. in future should I just do the move and wait for the bots to sort it all out or try to clean up as the special page says? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sciencefish (talkcontribs) 18:05, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

So having looked at the logs, it seems you did revert the page. I'd like to understand why it was reverted. I read requested moves, and reached Making an uncontroversial move and then be bold, having checked the requiremnets. What was my wrong step, thanks.Sciencefish (talk) 20:45, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sciencefish

I found the page because the non-existent categories which you added showed up in my search: https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/30916

So I reverted[1] the recategorisation.

I then looked at the renaming, and it seemed to me that there is a case to be made that the producers of board games are better described as manufacturers. It's not my field, so I haven't formed a clear view on it ... but I do think that the choice terminology needs discussion.

So I reverted[2] your page move.

If you still think that the page should be moved, feel free to open a WP:RM discussion. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:34, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. I understand your reasoning, if isn't clear to those not in the industry, it should be more clearly defined. I will open a WP:RM discussion. Sciencefish (talk) 12:47, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, @Sciencefish. Please remember that en.wp page titles are chosen per WP:COMMONNAME. The language of the industry does not carry special weight. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:49, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thank you for fixing that mistake. It's just that i could have sworn that category was in blue when i added it to the page (instead of the red that usually marks non-existent pages). I apologize for the trouble and thanks again. OmniFrieza994 (talk) 14:58, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Indonesia navboxes and LGBT military templates

[edit]

Just letting you know that during your cleanup of Indonesia related template categories, you have added two Indonesia template categories to Category:LGBT military templates. This has been fixed: Special:Diff/985327816. —andrybak (talk) 11:41, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ooops! Thanks for the fix, andrybak.
I think I was trying to use other template categories as the base, but screwed it up mightily. I am annoyed with myself for not spotting how badly I screwed up that one. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:29, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies. Talk: John Roberts the most recent section, Administration of Presidential Oath, 2009. Aineireland (talk)

@Aineireland, that is part way there. A link to the page, but not the actual discussion. I presume that the discussion you mean is at Talk:John Roberts#Administration_of_Presidential_Oath,_2009. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:59, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cultural infrastructure

[edit]

Good morning. What is your opinion on Category:Cultural infrastructure by century of completion? Cultural infrastructure sounds like fringe terminology to me and the category tree becomes quite complicated.

For example: Category:Buildings and structures completed in 1911 -> Category:Infrastructure completed in 1911 -> Category:Cultural infrastructure completed in 1911 -> Category:Music venues completed in 1911.

It would probably be more intuitive to have music venues as a direct subcategory of buildings and structures. Marcocapelle (talk) 11:01, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Error in AWB edit

[edit]

Hi BHG, I think something went wrong in this edit. DexDor (talk) 08:34, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, DexDor, for the fix.[3]
I didn't tell AWB to do that. It was some quirk of AWB's WP:GENFIXES, which I didn't spot. Luckily, it's a very rare usage, so I'm not concerned about a wider issue. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:38, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi I have a sandboxed article more or less ready for submission (see link above) - How do I move it into an area where it can be assessed - there are several editing issues I think I want to tidy up too - many of the citations might be better embedded as links, but I've only recently thought this and need now to work out how to do it without resetting all the links again - any help would be appreciated. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sonamerg (talkcontribs) 12:42, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Sonamerg, I have added a banner heading to your sandbox. At the bottom of that box there is a big blue button which allows you to submit the draft for review. Hope this helps. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:03, 3 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you & a quick question

[edit]

Thank you for dropping by my Sandbox page & correcting the categorization error! I am very new (clearly).

I have a question regarding the page I am drafting in that sandbox, if you could provide some clarification I would appreciate it greatly. If not, no worries! Thank you for your time!

I am hoping to create a page for a local microbrewery, Imagine Nation Brewing Co. (INBC), since I noticed it doesn't exist, and since I noticed similar pages about other local breweries do exist (e.g. KettleHouse Brewing Company). While researching I came across this page from another Wiki about INBC. It's a fully fleshed out and well researched, and seems to have originally come from Wikipedia at some point. However: it is misnamed (Imagine Nation *Brewing*), and I cannot find an old Wikipedia page for either that or the correct name. (I also checked Deletionpedia fwiw.)

I hope to create this page b/c I think the work the brewery owners is doing is fantastic, and it ought to be archived. Is there any reason I can't use that page, update the references & polish it a bit, to create a page here on Wikipedia? Was it originally a page & deleted for some reason?

I know this is a lot, but Wikipedia is a very overwhelming project to get involved in & any guidance would be much appreciated.

Many thanks, NotARealCowboy (talk) 22:19, 26 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@NotARealCowboy: at the foot of that page on the other wiki is a helpful link to https://en.everybodywiki.com/Edithistory:Imagine_Nation_Brewing which includes the reason for deletion from Wikipedia: "Submission is about a company or organization not yet shown to meet notability guidelines". See WP:NCORP. – Fayenatic London 09:16, 27 November 2020 (UTC) (TPS)[reply]

Does it matter? It appears that you are cleaning up the categories on a redirect that I moved from article space into user space and have tagged for deletion. The redirect had been in article space from the name of a song to the album that the song is in. The redirect is now in a temporary state, tagged as both G6 and U1, waiting for an admin to delete it. It isn't a redirect TO a draft. The draft isn't even a draft any more. I accepted the draft. That is, I moved the redirect from the song name to the album into user space so that I could move the draft on the song into article space. You are giving first aid to a wounded animal that is awaiting the mercy bullet. Thank you. Robert McClenon (talk) 05:58, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Robert McClenon
Long time no talk. Hope you are well.
I am just removing from content categories all pages in the user and user talk categories. I work off https://petscan.wmflabs.org/?psid=17430705 and try to clear it.
If I was an admin, I'd just delete your redirect. But since I can't do that, I just clicked the script, to at least remove it from cntent categories. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 06:13, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Timnit Gebru

[edit]

Hello, I'm not terribly familiar with Wikipedia processes so I hope you don't mind that I'm reaching out to you, as you've had some involvement with the Ethiopian Scientists category, and might know the right process for this.

Timnit Gebru is currently involved in a controversial severance from Google. Her page seems to be the subject of a back and forth edit war between describing her departure as a resignation or a firing. (This is a matter currently contested by both parties, as reported by mainstream media.) How could this article be submitted for consideration for protection? Cyanurea (talk) 21:24, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Cyanurea
If you think that protection is needed per WP:Protection policy, then make a request at WP:RFPP. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 07:28, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Irish Senior Counsel

[edit]

Hi BHG, the Category:Irish Senior Counsel was created in August 2020. What should its relationship be with Category:Irish barristers? I thought it was a duplicate but others disagree. Should it be a sub-category or something else? Spleodrach (talk) 11:46, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Spleodrach
a Senior counsel#Ireland is a higher rank of barrister, so Category:Irish Senior Counsel should be a subcat of Category:Irish barristers. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:05, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oneupsmanship: This painting turned the friendly rivalry between Edward Redfield and Elmer Schofield into
a feud. Schofield was a frequent houseguest at Redfield's farm, upstream from New Hope, Pennsylvania,
and the two would go out painting together, competing to capture the better view. Redfield served on the jury
for the 1904 Annual Exhibition of the Carnegie Institute; at which, despite Redfield's opposition, Across the
River
was awarded the Gold Medal and $1,500 prize. It was not until a 1963 interview that the 93-year-old
Redfield revealed the painting as the cause of the 40-year feud between them. Schofield may have painted it
in England, but a blindsided Redfield knew that it was a view of the Delaware River, from his own front yard!

Categories: death and / or suicide by year

[edit]

Recently an editor has been making hundreds of category changes in biographical articles in which they remove the Category:[year] deaths and replace it with Category:[year] suicides. For example [5] I first noticed this because it happened in an article that happens to be on my watchlist. I reverted their edit because I thought that (for example) Category:1933 deaths was a standard biography category and should be there regardless of the means or cause of death. That's how I interpreted Wikipedia:Categorization_of_people#N anyway. I've been poking around the WP documentation and asking people and eventually got to this page via the WP:Teahouse. So unless something has changed I gather from your comment that the practice of categorizing biography articles with "YYYY deaths" is "longstanding and stable". Do I understand correctly that it's appropriate also to categorize by "YYYY suicides" where applicable? Thanks, HazelAB (talk) 13:21, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Category templates

[edit]

Hello. Due to the outcome of this CfD I think you might need to update {{Category U.S. State elections by decade}} and {{Category U.S. State elections by year}} as they no longer function properly for the Washington DC categories (see the mess of categories it produces at Category:1870s elections in Washington, D.C. or Category:1978 elections in Washington, D.C., plus the categories are now sorted under "e" in e.g. Category:1978 elections in the United States by state). Pinging HandsomeFella in case they can help sort it out, seeing as they requested the category moves. Cheers, Number 57 13:53, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hope you are well and enjoying a well-earned break.
I have made temporary fixes to both templates, until you have time to do them properly. – Fayenatic London 15:24, 27 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've expanded the template content for DC now, so it looks much the same, but using navseasoncats instead of your tailored nav box with ifexists tests. It's not elegant, but it works. – Fayenatic London 14:12, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'm writing an article on this concept, and I thought you might have some perspective on it. Cheers! BD2412 T 21:52, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Lionel Pearson and William Crosfield

[edit]

Would you have any idea how best to track down any evidence that Lionel Pearson and William Crosfield are related? I think Crossfield (an MP for a couple of years) was the maternal grandfather of Lionel Pearson based on the mention here, but maybe not as 'William Crosfield' may have been a very common name. The connection would be the daughter named Bertha (mother of Lionel). Carcharoth (talk) 09:52, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

British MP categories

[edit]

Hello, BHG. It's been a while. While doing some recent work on Lord Lonsdale's ninepins, I noticed that Category:Members of the Parliament of the United Kingdom for English constituencies by constituency, Category:Members of the Parliament of Great Britain for English constituencies are incompletely and incoherently split up by (traditional) county. As the obviously best-qualified person to ask, do you think it would be worth the effort to continue breaking the GB and perhaps the UK category up by county? [edit]

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Category:2010_in_Indonesian_sport - Indonesia is in Asia/Southeast Asia - and not Oceania - I must apologise, I cannot see how to get Oceania out of the template that you used - it would be appreciated if you could give a clue - thanks. Re - https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Category:2010_in_Indonesian_sport The question was in a talk page message above, I have not had a message from anyone as to why or how Indonesia is claimed to be in oceania, and how the 'template' that you use can be queried, I would be only too pleased to receive a message as to why such an occurrence is inflicted on Indonesian sport... Thanks for your reply - this brings back memories of the editing climate of ten years ago - the chances of getting that qualified and established unharrassed is like, well, it is fundamentally incorrect in many ways, which makes editing eastern indonesia material problematic due to the varying geographical and political domainsbut I can see the issue of melanesia and oceania of western new guinea gave the earlier editors and excuse. bit like the indian ocean being on the shores of tasmania, or one of the previous american presidents superb border relations between canada and mexico have never been better... hmmm... JarrahTree 00:44, 13 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JarrahTree, I am not very pleased with how this has gone.
I wasn't around when you posted your previous message on my talk, and I only caught up with this issue when I was catching up on old notifications and undid[6] your revert[7].
First, your revert should have included an edit summary explaining why you reverted.
Secondly, a quick check would have shown you that all the other "YYYY in Indonesian sport" categories are also in both Asia and Oceania, so there was no reason to make 2010 an exception. Worse, by removing the template from 2010, you ensured that changes to the template would no longer update that page.
Thirdly, before you reverted, why didn't you check the head article Indonesia?
Per WP:CENT, discussion about this should be centralised, probably at Talk:Indonesia.
I am surprised that an experienced editor like you is going about this in such an odd way. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 01:12, 13 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies for the disruption, of course you are correct at every turn above. Indonesia project is moribund to say the least. There is really nowhere the issue could have been adequately discussed, as the Wallace Line really trumps the issue. The curiosity as to a number of issues were not spelt out anywhere, and you are quite right to be annoyed. There wont be anything like that again, and thanks for your accomodation and outline of my misdemeanours. Experience and comprehension of procedural correctness is quite a different discussion. Years in Sikkim

[edit]

Category:Years of the 20th century in Sikkim redirects to Category:20th century in Sikkim but Template:Year in country category is ludicrously complicated making it hard to see where to apply the fix. Timrollpickering (talk) 10:23, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Timrollpickering
Template:Year in country category is necessarily complex to accommodate name changes and colonies/decolonisation. The complexity is justified to allow its simple use in 37,597 transclusions. However, my invention of {{Resolve category redirect}} will allow me to radically simplify it one of these days.
As to this particular case, I have fixed it in these two edits:[8], [9]. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:38, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

category Mysore state

[edit]

Hi! Mysore state is the old term.. It is now just Mysore district. Vikram Vincent 13:06, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Vikram Vincent, yes it's the old name, and in this it is the correct name. The category is called Category:1969 establishments in Mysore State, because taht was the name in use in 1969. So I have restored[10] Christ University to Category:1969 establishments in Mysore State.
See Category:Establishments in Karnataka by year, which uses Mysore until the name change in 1973. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:16, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
LoL Mysore still exists :-) It is around 100+km from this institution's location. The reorganisation of States took place in 1956. Vikram Vincent 13:22, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Utterly wrong, @Vikram Vincent.
Mysore State was renamed in 1973 to Karnataka. It does not exist as a separate entity. You appear to be confusing the state with Mysore district.
And when engaging in a collegial discussion, please refrain from LOLing.--BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:26, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Vikram Vincent: Thanks you for striking the LOL.[11] But the only thing which is "genuinely funny" is your stubborn refual to recognise two very simple facts:
  1. that in 1969, the state was called Mysore State
  2. that Mysore State is not the same thing as Mysore district.
However, your decision to pursue your delusion in 3 different venues is not funny at all. It is disruptve timewasting. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:41, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Closing the discussion here since you removing India related categories has wide spread ramification. Vikram Vincent 14:54, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is no place for humour. Everything is very serious here and we are all terrifically important. [1] 18:07, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

BTW I am thankful for all the great work you are doing since I do see it in several of the pages Ive watchlisted over the one and half decades :-) Best! Vikram Vincent 18:09, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that, @Vikram Vincent. But I have to say that your disruptive forum-shopping across 4 venues is a very perverse way of showing that thankfulness. This could all have been handled much more quickly and easily in one venue if you had simply continued dialogue rather than repeatedly opening yet another discussion based on yet another of your misunderstandings, before I had time to write the reply which explained it.
I am sure that you mean well, but your approach to dialogue is highly disruptive. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:32, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cyprus–Turkey relations category

[edit]

Hello, I'm having trouble fixing the Cyprus–Turkey relations category page. For some reason, the map of the two countries highlighted doesn't show up and the main cat description still remains even though I removed the main category template. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 18:06, 18 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi WikiCleanerMan
The map won't be displayed unless it exists. Feel free to create one if you like.
As to the rest, I am not sure what you are trying to achieve. The template {{Foo–Bar relations category}} does everything that's needed in nearly all cases. In this case, I have removed[12] everything except the template. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:11, 18 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It didn't occur to me that the categories were already there prior to my edit. That was the issue. Thanks. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 20:16, 18 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Korean categories

[edit]

Hello, BHG,

You know more about categories than anyone so I thought I'd bring this category conflict to you, because you'll know what to do. Editor Yinweiaiqing has been very active lately, creating historical categories for mostly Korean, but also some Chinese, occupational categories. This has resulted in a lot of parent categories showing up on Special:WantedCategories list the past week.

So, I've been creating parent categories for these Korean calligraphers, mathematicians and artists, no problem, until I get to Category:Korean people by century and occupation. You'll see that Yinweiaiqing has been classifying nationality as "Korean" while previous category creators have labeled it "South Korean". Now we have Category:Korean people by century and occupation and Category:South Korean people by century and occupation.

I think I will have to change the subcategories in Category:21st-century Korean people by occupation to Category:21st-century South Korean people by occupation but what should be done with the 20th century ones when Korea was separated into North and South Korea in the 1950s? Should we have Category:20th-century Korean people by occupation or Category:20th-century South Korean people by occupation? Thanks, in advance, for your help. Liz Read! Talk! 21:24, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Liz
I think that for every category which applies post-partition, the solution is to have a "Category:Foo in Korea" with subcats "Category:Foo in North Korea" and "Category:Foo in South Korea". That's what we did in Ireland, and it works well: see WP:IRE-CATS.
So in the example you give, Category:20th-century South Korean people by occupation should exist and be a subcat of Category:20th-century Korean people by occupation. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:32, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
If I'm reading WP:IRE-CATS correctly, this means we should keep 21st-century Korean people categories as well. This gets into a political question because, as far as I am informed, Korean people think of the North/South division to be a political one but that "Korean" culture and history encompasses both countries. Liz Read! Talk! 23:03, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like you have already tackled some these categories which is appreciated. Liz Read! Talk! 23:05, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz, yes I have done quite a few over the years. And yes, keep 21st-century Korean people categories as well.
It's a political/cultural/historical issue, and the advantage of the WP:IRE-CATS stype of structure is that it respects all POVs. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:13, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
