Draft categories
I see you remove draft categories like [1]. WP:DRAFTNOCAT says they can be disabled by wrapping them in {{Draft categories}}. That makes it easier to restore them if the draft is moved to mainspace, and reduces the risk that the author adds draft categories again. You can add it as an option in "Wiki markup" below the edit area with this in your common JavaScript:
// Add custom CharInsert entries per [[Help:CharInsert#Customization]]
window.charinsertCustom = {
"Wiki markup": ' {\{Draft.categories|1=\n+}}\n',
};
Mark all the categories before selecting the option to automatically wrap them. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:12, 7 May 2023 (UTC)
- I came to say this as well. Its a more constructive edit for those drafting new articles. Ncwfl (talk) 20:14, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for using {{Draft categories}} now. You don't have to spend time looking for better categories. Most drafts are never accepted and bad categories do no harm when they are deactivated. If a draft is actually accepted then the reviewer and others can improve the categories. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:59, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
- Nothing has changed from before. There is no obligation to always just disable categories on drafts rather than removing them; rather, it's always conditional on various circumstances. For instance, if there are only a couple of categorized drafts to deal with, such as when I'm incat-searching Category:Living people a few times a day and find two or three drafts, then it's no major imposition on my time to just wrap categories in the "draft categories" wrapper — but when there are a hundred categorized drafts to deal with all at once, such as when I'm working with the weekly "Polluted categories" report, it becomes an unacceptable burden to have to spend anything more than a few seconds on any individual page. It's not a task I do because I enjoy it, it's a task I do because it needs to get done — so it's a task I always have to be able to reduce to the fastest wham-bam-next option that gets me in and out of any given draft in the absolute shortest amount of time possible.
- For example, draft creators don't always place categories at the bottom of the page: sometimes they place categories somewhere in the middle of the page, and I've even seen pages where people have placed several separate bundles of categories in multiple different places in the same draft — meaning that attempting to disable the categories instead of just hotcatting them out would require a significant time commitment of searching for the category declarations. So if it would take longer to wrap the categories than it would to just rub them out with HotCat, then I simply don't have any responsibility to take the longer option, especially if and when I have 100 other drafts to also get through.
- And it's not at all true that people are less likely to remove the draft categories wrapper than they are to readd categories that have been removed, either — I see both things happen, and in fact editors removing a draft categories wrapper that had already been on the page is slightly more common than editors readding categories that had been outright removed.
- Further, it is not a good idea to just leave bad (redlinked, inappropriate, overly generalized, etc.) categories on a page in disabled form — because that does create problems further down the line if an AFC reviewer accepts a draft without the necessary category adjustments, or if the draft creator tries to bypass AFC review by just moving the draft themselves. The question of whether "most" drafts get accepted or not is not relevant at all: if even one draft out of 1,000 gets mainspaced with any bad categories still on it, that's still one more categorization error that has to be fixed again than was actually necessary. So my job is not to leave bad categories on the page, and that's not a thing I'm ever going to do — even when I am just using the draft categories wrapper, I am still not going to leave bad categories on the page just because they're not currently causing any problems — if there's any possibility that they will ever cause any future problems, then I have to fix that now rather than leaving any possibility of future problems open.
- So the bottom line here is that I need to always be able deal with any categorized draft in the fastest "no more than ten seconds on any given page" manner possible, because there are all kinds of reasons (number of pages to be dealt with, weird placement of categories, preventing future problems, etc.) why it can become a longer and more tedious task than anybody should have to put up with. Sometimes wrapping them in the draft categories template is fine, sure, but sometimes just ripping the categories out with HotCat still has to be an option — and since we do not have any rule that merely disabling categories on draftspace pages is always required and removing them outright is forbidden, this really isn't a thing I should have to keep explaining or defending. I mean, sure, I'd love it if there were a way to just prevent user and draft pages from showing up in mainspace categories in the first place, so that nobody actually had to spend any amount of time on getting them pulled out of categories at all, but as long as it's still a task that has to be looked after manually it has to remain a task I'm entitled to reduce to the absolute shortest amount of time I can possibly spend on it. Policy 713
Hi there, I noticed you were apart of the LGBT in Canada work group and I was wondering if you could do an article rating on Policy 713? I've added everything I could find and published it to the mainspace, if there's any part of the article I could improve on feel free to let me know. B3251 (talk) 22:00, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
WP Radio Stations
Hi there. I noticed that you are one of the earliest, if not the earliest, editor to join WikiProject Radio Stations that is still active, so I thought you might be the best person to ask – are you or anyone else considered a “coordinator” for the project? I ask because I would like some “official” guidance related to the thread I started recently on the talk page there but wasn’t sure who to ask as the project page doesn’t list anyone being in such a role. Furthermore, I wouldn’t mind leading an official effort to establish some standards for that stuff, but I didn’t want to step on any toes (nor do I know whose toes I might need to worry about). — Garrett W. {☎ ✍} 02:08, 16 May 2023 (UTC)
User-facing categories
Hello Bearcat :) !
I hope you don’t mind, but I have a question. When fixing the categories on a Wikilove template I had made, you mentioned the fact that there should be no “User-facing categories” selected for a template. Would you be able to further explain to me the differences between user-facing categories and ones that are okay for use on a template? I hope I’m not bugging you by asking. I just want to not make the same mistake again, and I can’t seem to find the answer anywhere.
Thanks for all the help! 4theloveofallthings (talk) 20:08, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

AfC draft: "Hendrik Quast"
Hello Bearcat, I saw that you checked my draft. Thank you! I'm pretty new here and saw that you have a lot of experience. Do you think I should cut out all German references? If you have any recommendations before I submit the draft for review, I'm happy to revise the article. Have a wonderful day! ArtAndLiterature (talk) 17:37, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
LGBT culture in Puerto Vallarta
Hi, Bearcat! Not sure how familiar you are with Puerto Vallarta, but I've nominated LGBT culture in Puerto Vallarta for Good status and I was wondering if you might be interested in reviewing the article before the nomination gets picked up. I'm hoping this entry could be the first GA focused on LGBT culture in a specific locale. Any feedback or article improvements are appreciated. Either way, happy editing! ---Another Believer (Talk) 21:42, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
WP:DRAFTNOCAT
Hello,
I agree that draft articles should not have working categories (WP:DRAFTNOCAT). When you encounter categories in a draft article, rather than removing them outright, it is better to disable them by adding a colon between the opening square brackets and the word Category, like this: [[:Category:2001 insurgency in Macedonia]]
so that they can be restored if the article is approved. That's what I did at Draft:Battle of Lipkovo 01:58, 1 June 2023 (UTC) Eastmain (talk • contribs) 01:58, 1 June 2023 (UTC)
- I already addressed this the last time I was approached about this, it's even still visible on this very page a little bit further up. Sure, there are sometimes reasons why just disabling categories on drafts is appropriate, but there are sometimes reasons why removing categories from drafts is appropriate as well — for example, there's no value in leaving redlinked (i.e. nonexistent) categories on a draft in disabled form and then having to revisit and reclean the same redlinked category again when the draft gets moved to mainspace, and when I have to clean up dozens and dozens of drafts in one shot, wrapping all the categories adds up to a significantly longer time investment than just clicking the minus signs in HotCat does. (It may not seem like much longer from the perspective of one page, but it does turn into an excessive time burden when you're looking at dozens of pages.) I already do (and always have done) both things in different circumstances, and there's absolutely no rule that I'm not allowed to make any judgement calls. Again, I've explained the reasons above, so I won't get into all of them again, and you can read the prior discussion above — but we do not have any rule that categories on drafts must always just be disabled and can never be removed outright, and frankly I'm getting really tired of people repeatedly getting up in my grill about something that isn't a rule. Request to undelete One Day Alive (band) page
I am writing for the deletion of One Day Alive to be reviewed. The page was edited (by unknow person) and multi cites were taken out leaving only like 2-3 cites. I will edit page to add more cites. I am proposing to reenlist page as they currently have a record contract with a subsidiary company or Warner Brother Music. They also have a record coming out being produced by the guitarist of Saving Abel. I understand that the "charting" is not Billboard but I will cite everything else that I can. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Webbelot (talk • contribs) 14:56, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
Why Niko Omilana shouldn't be deleted
In response to the comment left on Niko Omilana's wiki page, he was a popular YouTuber before attempting to be a politician, being a prominent member of the YouTube group Beta Squad with fellow YouTuber Chunkz. He recently made a video series called The Biggest Menace with YouTuber JiDion. He's also featured in multiple Sidemen videos. Whilst the draft still needs expansion before being submitted, the draft shouldn't be deleted. Silverdashmax (talk) 06:05, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
