Feedback on Vector (2022) conversation

[edit]
The slides to our latest Wikimania presentation

Hello! As a member of WikiProject Usability, I wanted to draw your attention to a conversation currently underway on WP:VPR (see the beginning of the discussion) around adopting Vector 2022 as the new default skin.

The Web team at the Wikimedia Foundation has been working on Vector 2022 for the past three years, collaborating with the English Wikipedia community as well as other wikis to ensure that the skin performs better qualitatively and quantitatively for readers and communities than the previous Vector skin. The goal of the new skin is to create a more welcoming and easier to use experience for readers and editors across the wiki. For more details, see our new FAQ.

For the past couple of months, we have collected thoughts from the English Wikipedia community on what changes need to be made to the skin prior to it being considered ready for deployment. Our next step would be to start an RfC to assess whether the community considers Vedtor 2022 ready.

Prior to the beginning of the RfC, we wanted to draw your attention to the current conversation and encourage your feedback on the skin.

Our results from Vector 2022 at a glance
  • The sticky header makes it easier to access tools that editors use often. It decreases scrolling to the top of the page by 16%
  • The new table of contents makes it easier to navigate to different sections. Readers and editors jumped between sections 50% more than with the old table of contents
  • The new search bar is easier to find and makes it easier to find the correct search result from the list. This increased the amount of searches started by 30% on the wikis we tested on
  • The collapsible sidebar allows readers and editors to choose whether they want to see the main menu or not. Our testing shows that this allows people to better focus on their current task - reading with a collapsed menu, or editing with an open menu
  • The language switching menu makes it possible to switch languages without scrolling
  • The user menu collects all user links in a single place, making it easier to understand what each link does. In testing, 71% of surveyed editors reported positive experiences with the new menu

Vector RfC closing

[edit]

Hi. Just wanted to let you know I have hatted Wikipedia talk:Requests for comment/Deployment of Vector (2022)#When closing this RfC.... While I appreciate the thoughts presented, suggesting other editors' comments be disregarded is unlikely to move the discussion forward in a productive way. Mini scule image caption

[edit]

Hi Awesome Aasim! Thanks for your nice note regarding our recent small edit to the "mini scule" page. Our edit wasn't actually a test, but we understand that it perhaps looked like one. After spending about 5 minutes staring at the image (with friends doing the same!) trying to find a mini scule, we elected to edit the caption of the habitat image to indicate that there are no visible mini scules in the image, to prevent confusion for others. We applied a touch of humor by using the phrase "mini scule not included" (as in "batteries not included") to convey this fact.

We're fine with whatever you think is best, although we do think it's best to have a note indicating that there are no mini scules visible in that image (unless, of course, we are mistaken). In today's far-too-serious world, a light touch of humor might help us all. :) 99.165.47.46 (talk) 04:22, 27 October 2022 (UTC)

Margot Kidder revision reversal

[edit]

Hi Aisem - I am unclear why you think my edits were not neutral, and believe you are confusing what I wrote privately in explaining my edits, to what the actual edits were. I only stated in the actual edits 2 facts: 1) Margot Kidder came to Crawford to protest the war in August 2005 and 2) she took issue with being called a Democrat and corrected folks by saying she was a liberal or a progressive. In the PRIVATE box where I thought I needed to justify how I knew this info, I indeed wrote things that were not for public consumption. But my actual edits were factual, neutral, and pertinent to her legacy. Her page said she was at Standing Rock to protest... how is that different than my saying she was at Camp Casey in 2005? The page also says (and cittes sources, as did I) that Margot called herself a liberal. These days both parties have evolved to have at least 2 contingencies (ie Conservative Republicans, Maga Republicans, Lincoln Republicans, Democrats, Progressives, Democratic Socialists, etc. - NONE of those are biased. They are self-descriptors.) Margot was a QUITE outspoken person. Perhaps you are too young to remember her clear public persona of loudly correcting anything she didn"t agree with. She did not like being called a Democrat and would jump to correct anyone who called her that; she was consistently clear that she voted Democrat but was a Liberal or a Progressive. Again, please discern what I am communicating privately to you, and the very neutral, factual 2 data points I clarified in the body-text of her page. This woman is dead, and these are two points she would want to be remembered for - and these 2 points are factual and unbiased. I can't for the life of me see how anyone could think they weren't, especially as they are completely congruent with what is already on her wikipedia page. Please reinstate my 2 minimal edits. 2600:1700:F5E0:6530:45CE:F071:D12A:AF48 (talk) 03:10, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for reaching out! I think the specific problem was you did not add a reliable source, we can't use syntheses or draw conclusions based off of the article text or the sources. Please see WP:NOR. I also am not sure about the relevance of the edit to the encyclopedia article. If you'd like, you can put that edit back after addressing these issues. I occasionally make mistakes, just like everyone else, so it is good that you communicated with me that I might have messed up. :) Aasim - Herrscher of Wikis ❄️ 03:27, 1 November 2022 (UTC)

Athaenara

[edit]

I know that this was well meant, but posting it on the talk page of a long-time (now ex-)admin who is barred from replying was a poor decision. It comes over as deeply patronising and only just skirts the advice at DTTTR. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that bigot is gone from here, but your post reads like gravedancing as well as being horribly condescending. Perhaps you might consider removing it or at the very least editing it? YMMV, of course. — Trey Maturin has spoken 20:32, 4 November 2022 (UTC)

Hey Trey Maturin - thanks for the concern! We all make mistakes, and "I should not have done this" runs through people's heads when they see that they done goofed, which is why we have a block appeals process. We do not block solely because we believe a user to be acting in bad faith - we block because the current conduct suggests that leaving a user unblocked would result in significant troubles to the project. It seems as if Bbb23 reverted with the reason that "editors should really leave this Talk page alone" yet that has not stopped people from commenting. If the community really does not want people to make counterproductive comments on that talk page then page protection is the solution. Aasim - Herrscher of Wikis ❄️ 17:31, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
I’m going to, at this point, assume that there’s a language barrier here and that you are unaware of how intensely patronising your talk page posts of late have been. Good day to you. — Trey Maturin has spoken 19:41, 5 November 2022 (UTC)
That was not my intention, if it was taken that way that explains why my last two edits were reverted. Anyway, have a good day @Trey Maturin. :) Aasim - Herrscher of Wikis ❄️ 19:43, 5 November 2022 (UTC)

It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:25, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

Speedy template sandbox miscategorized as a speedy candidate

[edit]

Hello. I've recently seen you experimenting with speedy deletion templates. Unfortunately, the experiments resulted in Template:Db/sandbox being miscategorized as a speedy deletion candidate.

Please consider solutions to this. I propose adding a parameter to the module, encapsulated noinclude tag, so that the templates themselves are not mistargeted. NasssaNsertalk 05:30, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

@NasssaNser Fixed. Thanks :D Aasim - Herrscher of Wikis ❄️ 05:45, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
