Help request: very simple image thing

Hi. As you can see on this talk page of this article: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Talk:Wahbah_al-Zuhayli#Photo I wonder if you can help get this image to the English Wikipedia of this biography from the Arabic one. Thanks. DivineReality (talk) 03:06, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, as Anachronist already informed you, that image seems to lack the proper licensing to be used. See Licensing Andre🚐 03:35, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look

I notice that you added some good content, but the essay has undergone a number of changes, and I now wonder about the proper location of that addition. Please take a look, and feel free to integrate it where it fits best. Also, feel free to improve that essay. It addresses some very important concepts that the community really needs to understand, accept, and incorporate as a formalized modus operandi.

With certain revisions, it could be used as the basis for an article. It is related to Ideological bias on Wikipedia. -- Valjean (talk) (PING me) 18:55, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

American Academy, or the New Gilead

Trump has made the opening salvo in the elimination of the Department of Education, calling for the creation of the "American Academy", a kind of educational online version of Conservapedia written by far right extremists, who will offer online degrees for brownshirts to work in the federal government. Note, this is the beginning of the final push of a two-prong attack for complete control of education, followed by a reorganization of the military. Once those are complete, the seven mountain mandate of Christian nationalism will be complete, and the US will be a theocratic republic. The GOP already has control of business, religion, and the media. They are in control of the courts but do not have control over education and the military just yet. Viriditas (talk) 03:37, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I thought they have that already. It's called PragerU. Why would a conservative use government money to do what the private industry can do cheaper and shabbilier? Andre🚐 03:38, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This question actually comes up a lot. As it turns out, whenever the GOP comes into a new admin, government spending goes up, not down. The elimination of the department of education is a money grab for private industry, mostly cronies of the Trump family and the wider network, who stand to make billions cutting services and raising costs. It’s the same grift they always pull. Don’t forget, the vast majority of wealthy businesspeople who support Trump rely on government contracts, kickbacks, subsidies, and aid. It’s socialism for the rich and rugged capitalism for everyone else. Viriditas (talk) 03:41, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I think you may be right about most of that, but I don't think the Wall Street financier people are actually going to give the fundamentalist wing what they think they are getting. They want to cut spending and reduce taxes for the wealthy, and will pretty much promise whatever they can to get that done and not necessarily follow through on it. Also, don't forget that Trump failed to repeal the ACA and only barely accomplished the tax cut agenda while failing at most everything else he wanted to do legislatively, and this Congress is going to be even thinner of a majority than the one Trump had in 2016. Andre🚐 03:47, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wall Street, venture capitalists, and Silicon Valley are on board. The whole "cut spending and reduce taxes" thing is a bit of smoke and mirrors. The GOP will cut taxes on billionaires and raise them on the rest of us. They have admitted that. As for cutting spending, I would invite you to look at all the attempts to cut spending in GOP admins since Reagan. It may surprise you. It turns out, that contrary to conventional wisdom, it’s the Democrats who cut spending after every GOP spending spree with a Republican president. Look at the data and you’ll see it for yourself. It may also surprise you to learn that the vast majority of Democratic programs actually save money, which is one reason the GOP is always against them. It turns out that the GOP plan is always about enriching themselves and disenfranchising and impoverishing the rest of us. Viriditas (talk) 03:57, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Although I think you are right about the GOP writ large, and while that is probably true and I haven't researched any budget numbers, that probably is mostly military spending that conservatives spend more on I'll guess? E.g. Reagan in Latin America, Bush in the Middle East, etc. The main things they want to cut are domestic "entitlement" programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the EPA, the NIH, CDC, NOAA, and the DoE. They also tried to cut stuff like the NEA. Any vestige of New Deal or Great Society stuff. Whereas they will spend more on military adventurism in the Middle East and Latin America. At any rate, Congress controls the purse. I don't see any change that Trump wants to enact will be easy and may not happen at all before midterms neuter him. I told you that would result in a contentious discussion. AnonMoos (talk) 23:48, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, and may not lead to any consensus, but I do think the issues are worthy of discussion, I think there is a valid concern about WP:TITLESINTITLES and WP:PRECISE, and sufficient sourcing to support what I proposed. Arbitration motions regarding Palestine-Israel articles

The Arbitration Committee has resolved by motion that:

Motion 1: Appeals only to ArbCom

When imposing a contentious topic restriction under the Arab-Israeli conflict contentious topic, an uninvolved administrator may require that appeals be heard only by the Arbitration Committee. In such cases, the committee will hear appeals at ARCA according to the community review standard. A rough consensus of arbitrators will be required to overturn or amend the sanction.

Motion 2b: Word limits

Uninvolved administrators may impose word limits on all participants in a discussion, or on individual editors across all discussions, within the area of conflict. These word limits are designated as part of the standard set of restrictions within the Arab-Israeli conflict contentious topic. These restrictions must be logged and may be appealed in the same way as all contentious topic restrictions.

Motion 2c: Word limits

All participants in formal discussions (RfCs, RMs, etc) within the area of conflict are urged to keep their comments concise, and are limited to 1,000 words per discussion. This motion will sunset two years from the date of its passage.

Motion 5: PIA5 Case

Following a request at WP:ARCA, the Arbitration Committee directs its clerks to open a case to examine the interaction of specific editors in the WP:PIA topic area. Subject to amendment by the drafting arbitrators, the following rules will govern the case:

  • The case title will be Palestine-Israel articles 5.
  • The initial parties will be:
  • Aoidh will be the initial drafter
  • The case will progress at the usual time table, unless additional parties are added or the complexity of the case warrants additional time for drafting a proposed decision, in which case the drafters may choose to extend the timeline.
  • All case pages are to be semi-protected.
  • Private evidence will be accepted. Any case submissions involving non-public information, including off-site accounts, should be directed to the Arbitration Committee by email to Arbcom-en@wikimedia.org. Any links to the English Wikipedia submitted as part of private evidence will be aggregated and posted on the evidence page. Any private evidence that is used to support a proposal (a finding of fact or remedy) or is otherwise deemed relevant to the case will be provided to affected parties when possible (evidence of off-wiki harassment may not be shared). Affected parties will be given an opportunity to respond.
Addendum

In passing motion #5 to open a Palestine-Israel articles 5 case, the Committee has appointed three drafters: Aoidh, HJ Mitchell, and CaptainEek. The drafters have resolved that the case will open on November 30. The delay will allow the Committee time to resolve a related private matter, and allow for both outgoing and incoming Arbitrators to vote on the case. The drafters have changed the party list to the following individuals:

The drafters reserve the right to amend the list of parties if necessary. The drafters anticipate that the case will include a two week evidence phase, a one week workshop phase, and a two week proposed decision phase.

The related Arbitration enforcement referral: Nableezy et al request has been folded into this case. Evidence from the related private matter, as alluded to in the Covert canvassing and proxying in the Israel-Arab conflict topic area case request, will be examined prior to the start of the case, and resolved separately.

What's the story behind the change? I'm hoping the story is long, humorous, and convoluted, as most Sunday stories tend to be. Bonus points if there's a shaggy dog involved. Viriditas (talk) 21:31, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No humorous or entertaining story I'm afraid. This is actually one of the last places on the internet where I was still using that alias which dates to the mid-90's, and I've stopped using it practically everywhere else. On a whim I figured I'd take advantage of the rename, since Wikipedia is one of the few sites that can do it easily. Didn't mean to cause any consternation. Have kept all the redirects and the sig in place so there shouldn't be any confusion. Andre🚐 21:39, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There's many potential jokes in there, my friend. I get it, you're not in a humorous mood. Viriditas (talk) 22:07, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're right, there's always material to be found. I'm finding my thoughts weighed by the cabinet pick narrative. Just watched the new Have I Got News for You. The prospect of another pandemic with RFK Jr at the helm is not buoying the spirits. Andre🚐 22:09, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you saw SNL last night. They killed it with the cabinet picks, although I have to say that they need to stop letting Alec Baldwin guest star in the sketches since he always finds a way to mess it up. It's like he has a few drinks before getting on stage and just calls it in while the other cast members are taking it seriously. The resurrection of Dana Carvey is fantastic, and I'm deeply upset by my liberal brethren who can't stand that he does such a great job making fun of Biden. Viriditas (talk) 22:13, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it was an OK episode. I love Dana Carvey, have enjoyed his work since the Bush 1 days, and I think his Biden is better than Jim Carrey's -- I'm not kidding around! By the way -- and Maya Rudolph and Andy Samberg were great this season -- but I agree they could have picked someone better than Baldwin for last night. But Sarah Sherman as Gaetz was good. And I can see that podcast bit returning. Andre🚐 22:17, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I still can't get over Sherman as Gaetz. Absolute genius. My two favorite people right now on the show are Sherman and Marcello Hernandez, who seems to be rising as a star. The Wicked sketch was so damn funny that I watched it twice. I have to say that it was a bit disturbing to see Andrew deWaard's research on financialization being demonstrated in real time, as the commerical tie-in to Wicked was clearly promotional. deWaard argues that this is one reason why Hollywood has been pumping out crap for the last decade or so. Financialization, argues deWaard, can be blamed for less creativity, as it seeks reliable revenue streams that discourage new and different content from emerging. Viriditas (talk) 22:21, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I had the good fortune to see Wicked on Broadway with Idina Menzel, so I don't think the film will live up to that. But it looks ok. I agree I wasn't a fan of it being a tie-in, there was also some kind of Allstate ad with the Please Don't Destroy guys. If Sherman and Hernandez' stars are rising, I think the PDD guys seem to be on the Lorne rehash mill after a disappointing film release. I watched the cut from air Charli XCX sketch with them and was also pretty underwhelmed. Sherman's definitely going places though. Andre🚐 22:26, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think what I love most about Sherman is her sense of timing, and how all of her body movements are coordinated with what she says, not just in an old-timey, campy theatrical style, but in a way that reaches out to the audience and forms a connection. That's seriously hard to do, and she pulls it off like a champ. Was that Carvey as Al Pacino? He out-Pacino-ed, Pachino! That Allstate ad was crazy. Good for them for taking risks but it was way out there weird. Viriditas (talk) 22:32, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agree about Sherman, she's a real talent. Yeah, that's one of Carvey's go-to impressions, a throwback to his own failed Hollywood vehicle. I'm really enjoying this second act he's getting. I think the 86-92 is one of the golden ages, possibly superior to the original 1975 era. Andre🚐 22:37, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This was comedy gold. Cut for time. Viriditas (talk) 22:48, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I heard that an ad for Wicked mistakenly linked to a website with "wicked" in the url, that was actually a porn site. --Tryptofish (talk) 19:08, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it was on the back of Wicked doll boxes for children. The URL linked to Wicked Pictures instead of WickedMovie.com. I don't really get how an error like that could even happen without some kind of quality control, but it's an easy error to make. Viriditas (talk) 21:25, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, the wrong kind of "dolls". As for marketing errors happening, there's also how the Chevy Nova sounded in Spanish-speaking countries. --Tryptofish (talk) 21:59, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're playing with fire, my dude. I have heaps of Chevy Nova stories to tell. Viriditas (talk) 22:22, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
One often assumes large corporations would have good quality control and sensible review of compliance... and one would often be very, tragicomically wrong. Andre🚐 23:00, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The media in general is incompetent and beholden to corporations who do not have our best interests at heart, particularly when it comes to public health. Look at all the E. coli outbreaks in the US in just the last several months, from onions at McDonald’s to California carrots. Not a single one of the hundreds of articles on this subject ever once discussed etiology, pathogenesis, the necessity of public health rules to prevent outbreaks, the safety and hazards of fertilizer and farm worker sanitation facilities, or the risk of contamination by farm animals. Not a single article other than "throw your carrots out" and see you next month when the Trump admin rolls back more public health measures. Absolutely insane. Viriditas (talk) 23:19, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Very true. Organic carrots to boot. Here I am extolling the virtues of organic food and they're making me look silly. Plus RFK Jr eating big macs. Ugh. Andre🚐 23:28, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well isn’t this bitch fest just grand.
