Vandalism?

Quite frankly sir, it is not my fault that you have such a low grasp on Norse mythology. I myself am from Oslo, Norway, and I'm sure I know more about my homeland than you do. The fact that you reverted my edit shows your incompetence. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.186.168.203 (talk) 02:36, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

As a mere resident of New Jersey, having reviewed the edit in question, my lack of in-depth knowledge of Norse mythology was no impediment to identifying your edit as vandalism, in all its epicness. Alansohn (talk) 02:47, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Epicness—NICE! Think we need a (non dict def) entry for it. Some references

"Notable alumni" of minor league teams

Hi. Another editor, NatureBoyMD, has come up with what I think is a good and thoughtful template and conditions for a "notable alumni" list for a minor league team that interests him. See [1]. I thought that before he finalizes it, it/he might benefit from you taking a glance at it, and giving him any comments that you may have, since I could see it being used for other minor league teams (its better than anything I've seen), and you are a baseball editor whose views I respect. Feel free to leave your comments on it for him on my home talk page at the above url, as that is where he and I have been discussing it. Thanks.--Epeefleche (talk) 05:34, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

STOP INSULTING THE WIKIPEDIA! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 147.252.234.42 (talk) 15:49, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

You needn't worry

You needn't worry that I'm seriously plotting to assassinate troublesome categories. For one, I'm not a bureaucrat, nor would I want to be one, so I can't satisfy my own stated pre-requisites for perpetration. Secondly, it would of course be an affront to the principle of "consensus", which (at least until further notice) is foundational. Thirdly, it would surely result in the perpetrators getting banned; nobody wants to be banned. Fourthly, I couldn't handle the media attention. Fifthly, what would my auntie Kay think? Lastly, there are not enough knives in all the world to properly finish the job on the category tree. Good Ol’factory (talk) 21:21, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm worried. I'm very worried. I've already seen the damage that can and will be done to those who dare to disagree, even without all the knives sharpened. Trivializing the Holocaust and child molestation, and now turning the Night of the Long Knives into a sick joke, is a rather disturbing precedent for any administrator, even one whose not a bureaucrat. Alansohn (talk) 21:27, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Relax, Alansohn. It was a passing joke—whether or not it's "sick" or not, I'm unsure—I'll have to get a fecal sample from it to know for sure. :) Just to clarify, I don't have a problem with users disagreeing with me on issues as opinion-dependent as the existence of a particular category. You can choose be "very worried" about all of this if you want—don't misunderstand me as being bossy or ordering you not to—but my suggestion would be that life is too short and for most people there are probably more important and relevant things to spend your "worry time" on. Possibly of concern to you

I was looking at a user's contributions and quite by accident I saw that the user had edited User talk:Alansohn2. Is User:Alansohn2 anything to do with you? If not, we might want to take further steps, as there's a possible risk of impersonation due to the similarity of your names. (The new account edited a page on NJ and also posted a warning on a user talk page, which is why I thought it might be you experimenting with another account, but if not this increases the potential confusion problems of a user using this name.) Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:23, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Fort Lee is about 5 miles away, but it's not me. There is a genuine possibility that its could be someone else with the same name, which would be quite a coincidence but far from impossible. I'd keep an eye on the account. It doesn't appear to be someone trying to spoof my edits, but the person could be close enough that some of our edits might overlap. Alansohn (talk) 02:20, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Let me know if you run into any trouble from it and I'll help if I can. Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:48, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
You are so sneaky, Alansohn, selecting such an unguessable name for your sock. Good sleuthing, Good Olfactory! Keep up the vigilance! Bongomatic 02:56, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Huh, wha? I never thought of this as a "sock" problem at all. Had this been the "real" Alansohn's other account I would have assumed, based on the accounts edits, that he was simply experimenting with using another account. My concern was actually that another user was trying to impersonate our fine editor here. If you're just mocking me for the sake of doing so, Bongo, I'm now going to laugh along .... (ha ha ha cough cough gurgle...) Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:53, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
I think that Bongo was joking here, as was I. No gurgling necessary. Alansohn (talk) 20:39, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
I thought probably that was the case—I tried to laugh along and then it got stuck in my throat ... I can dish it out but I can't take it ... Good Ol’factory (talk) 20:51, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

DRV of the Wrangler categories

I'm unhappy with your comment about my "concocting an excuse" to close the Second Wrangler category as "delete" because I put my personal views above process. You may have missed my comment that I closed the 2008 discussion as "keep", so I don't know why you think my views accord with the outcome. Please retract your remarks. Regards, BencherliteTalk 11:54, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Are you planning to reply? Or do I have to raise the matter elsewhere, given your prima facie assumption of bad faith on my part? BencherliteTalk 18:24, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Just so we're entirely clear, this is the diff I'm talking about. BencherliteTalk 18:26, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
I hadn't seen your earlier note. I will review and make a determination as to what modification would be appropriate to more accurately reflect your actions in closing this CfD under discussion. Alansohn (talk) 18:31, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

When? You've been doing plenty of editing since I left the second message, let alone the first message, and I'm disappointed that you haven't given this a higher priority. BencherliteTalk 09:36, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
I had been trying to word my response and hadn't had a chance to stop by DRV. I have replied and made it clear that I do not believe that you "concocted" anything, rather that there was a misapplication and misinterpretation of Wikipedia policy in closing the CfD in question. I hope this addresses your concerns. Please feel free to respond further either on my talk page or at DRV. Alansohn (talk) 12:33, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for removing any suggestion of bad faith. The reasonableness of my closure is clearly something upon which people can, and do, differ, and so I don't have any remaining issues with your comments. Regards, BencherliteTalk 14:21, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello! By any chance can you help with making this a DYK? I am not sure how to add these things, but I think this referenced fact would be a good one to include. Best, --A NobodyMy talk 17:55, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

This would have been a great candidate for a hook, but the article doesn't meet the qualifications for DYK. Per WP:DYK, an article must be new or have been expanded fivefold within the past five days. As this article is a rather old one, and has not met the expansion requirement, it would not be eligible. I'll be happy to take a look at any new / newly-expanded articles. Alansohn (talk) 18:09, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
Okay, what about with this? As you can see I expanded the article considerably? Needing a bit of help

Spotted a comment on the Bernards High site saying that a reference is needed for the citation of J Geils as a grad. A while ago I saw the 1964 yearbook with his picture in it -also know people who knew him - & recently saw the following on the internet:
_ June 6th, 2005 BERNARDS HIGH SCHOOL in Bernardsville is celebrating its centennial this month. One famous graduate from the Class of 64 is John W. Geils Jr. Retired librarian and teacher Mary Elizabeth Young who worked at the school for 41 years, recalls J.Geils: QUOTE: "always wore nice slacks and tie and a white shirt and jacket," Source: Bridgewater Courier News - Bridgewater,NJ,USA http://www.funkyjudge.net/geils_newsround_2005.html

- so where does this bring things? no, it is not quite an ironclad reference- but it would seem that it does lend substantial support - what is the protocol in a case like this? and how should this reference be noted? as a total novice, I plead ignorance in regard to these details & and admit to a concern about making a hash of things- If an action is warranted & if it is rather straightforward & you would do it - that would be great & I'll watch & learn. JinNJ (talk) 03:59, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

The item is a single sentence quoted on a blog from a newspaper article. While I am familiar with the paper, and I would accept it as a source if I could find it, I have been unable to find the original article. Another search of Google / News / Archive also finds nothing. I don't doubt that he attended, I just can't find a satisfactory source to support the claim. Alansohn (talk) 18:40, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

The issue is not the hood scoop. It's the edit that changed Curt Simmons to Richard Simmons that is vandalism. Alansohn (talk) 00:14, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

hello and tank you for the message you left me on the talk page. i would like to inform that originally i did give a proper explanation for why i removed the content however my original edit was reverted by a more misinformed user who did not know the content was misleading and as such the edit that you deleted was just my reversion of the respective user's edit (pretty confusing, huh?), and there is a topic in talk page regarding the respective content since last month. while i appreciate the you doing your part to help improve wikipedia i would like to give you a friendly piece of advice: please check the discussion page and the edit history before randomly reverting edits. thank you very much for your time and have a nice weekend.Adijarca (talk) 07:15, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Hello Alansohn. Your reasonable start for this article has been overtaken by new contributors who may not yet be familiar with our standards. Someone has begun a discussion at WP:COIN#Polypill and Polycap about the editing of Drmaseeh (talk · contribs). If you have any time yourself, I wonder if you feel like pruning out any of the excessive material? (bold text, etc.) There might be a copyvio in there, judging from the language used. Recent edit to the page Polygamy

This is regarding your message at User talk:75.72.217.46 regarding this edit to the page Polygamy. I am obviously new to editing and while reading the article came across a typo so thought of fixing that. I did not give a detailed description as the fix was self evident but after getting a message from Tiderolls I re-edited and this time I gave a detailed edit description. But now I notice that the page has been reverted and I am given a warning. I would appreciate if you could could look into the page and see for yourself that I was just trying to fix an error. Cheers :) Umnmathtutor (talk) 03:03, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Image reversion VIA FP9ARM

There is no reason to revert this image. The image that was added is no different to the one that was originally there, the person who added the second image is obviously just wanting their own images on the page. 67.193.221.128 (talk) 02:57, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Thankyou. I'm guessing that it got your attention because there was no edit summary. If so the mistake is mine. Autism

Did you not read the reference? And I quote: "a DSM-IV diagnosis of Asperger's disorder is unlikely or impossible.". Hoax. Plain and simple. Please read the details before calling controversial papers "vandalism" if there is a lack of scientific consensus then perhaps it shouldn't be on Wikipedia at all. In case you didn't see it the first time [3], also [4] provides a layman's introduction. 129.97.134.80 (talk) 22:52, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

While you are quoting a reference to support your claim, the article I read does not use the word "hoax" or claim it as such. The article questions the diagnostic criteria established by DSM-IV for Asperger's. If you are going to expunge any mentions of Asperger's or refer to it as a hoax, you will need to rebut the thousands of other articles that treat it as a rather real condition. Do not remove any content without discussing it first on the talk page. Alansohn (talk) 23:58, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Just to make sure you don't get into an edit war under false assumptions. The IP you just warned for removing sourced content is a static one who regularly removes questionable content that is always being added by the same COI SPA. See my "Note for vandal fighters" on the IP's talk page. --Hans Adler (talk) 15:31, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up. The content removed seemed more than plausible and the lack of an edit summary coming from an IP editor made it appear as vandalism. With subsequent edits to the article, I now understand why the content was removed. Alansohn (talk) 15:33, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
It's a strange situation. The content looks more than plausible, but Grockl has in the past been making claims that are totally over the top, so I tend to err on the side of caution and decline to accept anything without bulletproof sourcing. --Hans Adler (talk) 18:52, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

April 2009 block

Alansohn, I've blocked you for 31 hours for violation of your editing restrictions. You've recently been uncivil to other editors at a number of recent CfD and CfD-related discussions, including most recently [5], [6], [7], [8]. Judging by your past comments to me about the editing restrictions you've been placed under, I can understand that you will probably not view this block as legitimate. Anyone can be misunderstood a few times and appear to be uncivil when no incivility was intended, but you're exhibiting the same pattern of behavior that originally led to the restrictions and the subsequent blocks. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:04, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

These admittedly trenchant remarks of Alansohn's seem to me to fall within the usual 'cut and thrust' of cfds. I've been called worse myself (usually by Otto) in cfds in the last few weeks. And he is now benefitting only Dunkin' Donuts franchise-holders. I appeal for clemency on his behalf. Occuli (talk) 19:05, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Diva Zappa

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Diva Zappa, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

I suggested over a fortnight ago that I didn't feel that Zappa was notable enough to have her own Wiki page and used the notability tag. No-one has made any effort in establishing notability and when I have searched for her on Google, I found little that suggested anything other than very minor claims for notability.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Hi Alansohn

Nightlife in Ulaanbaatar is for the most part restricted to the hotels, and thus reserved for foreigners and the few Mongolians, in one way or another, to get past the doormen. The best-attended bar is in the Ulaanbaatar Hotel, which is the city's largest hostelry. This bar opens at 10 p.m. and it accepts only American paper money; since a can of imported beer is a dollar and a half, there is a problem about change. in lieu of Silver, patrons receive packets of bubble gum. While I was there, the patrons included a BBC television crew, several print journalists, foreign diplomats, staff members of United Nations agencies, circus talent scouts, oil prospectors, an investment banker from London, a British agronomist, an American Peace Corps official, a South Korean highway engineer, a Dutch veterinarian, two English trekkers, an American promoter of outdoor-advertising signs, and hunters of both the rifle and the bow-and-arrow variety.

December 2017

Let's make something perfectly clear: you started a discussion that asked "Is Yahoo Sports a reliable source?" You didn't start a discussion that asked "Should this tertiary source from the Yahoo Sports High School blog be used instead of the secondary source that it points out and links to?" If you start an RfC on that, it will be relevant to the edit that you're now trying to force on the Millville High School article. If you don't know how to start an RfC that's that specfic, let me know and I'll be happy to start it for you. Thanks. Rockypedia (talk) 17:39, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

Rockypedia, every participant saw your argument and rejected it. The source is reliable and verifiable, and supports the claim being made. It's time to move on as you appear to be living up to your reputation. Alansohn (talk) 17:41, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
This is a lie. Nobody rejected my argument that the tertiary source is redundant. You put forth a premise that I was arguing that all of Yahoo Sports was not a reliable source, which was a lie. I was pointing out the the source was a blog piece and only linked to a reliable secondary source. You set up the straw man, and when I pointed out that I wasn't saying all of Yahoo was not a reliable source, you conveniently ignored that. No one has commented on your use of a blog as a source, because you never asked that question. Set up a real RfC and then get consensus, and your edit will be valid. However, I think you already know what would happen, because that's the reason you set up the straw man discussion in the first place. Rockypedia (talk) 17:48, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
The argument was made by you that a blog at Yahoo Sports can't be reliable; that argument has been summarily rejected. I see that you have done nothing other than delete articles and disrupt content. Try doing something productive and learn how to be a useful editor. Maybe another WP:ANI case might be more successful. Alansohn (talk) 17:53, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
Again, you're lying. I made the argument that that particular blog post was not considered a reliable secondary source, because it's a blog post AND because it merely points to the reliable secondary source, with no research of its own. Why you're insisting on including it would be baffling, except that after dealing with you over this one edit, and being contacted by other editors that you've bludgeoned into submission, I'm pretty sure it's only about WP:WINNING at this point for you. Unfortunately, in this case the source is not as good as the secondary source that's already there, so there's no reason for it to be there. Rockypedia (talk) 18:05, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
Again, you're living up to your reputation. While your first approach was a failed attempt to WP:ANI, I went to WP:RSN, raised the issue, heard from multiple uninvolved parties, saw your issues directly rebutted and responded to that consensus. I put the source into the article in the first place because it addressed a specific claim and I reinserted it on that basis and based on the consensus reached at WP:RSN.
If you believe your own bullshit about my "lying" -- as you've claimed on several separate occasions in separate violations of WP:NPA -- start another case at WP:ANI. If you believe that you have a case above and beyond the one that was rejected at WP:RSN, start an RfC, but be forewarned that you will be hit directly by claims that you're forum shopping.
The choice is yours, but I hope that you will stop edit warring. Alansohn (talk) 21:15, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

Re: Jeremy Glick: Saddle River or Upper Saddle River

Hey, there does seem to be some discrepancy between sources, however, I found this one: [9] which states Glick was born in NYC and raised in Oradell, NJ, and says he attended the Saddle River day school. I also found this [10] which also states Oradell as a location he grew up in (not 100% sure if it's credible). If there are conflicting sources then perhaps the information should not be included until we find various sources that are consistent with one another. What do you think? Tinton5 (talk) 21:00, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

  • Tinton5, thanks for the original edit to Jeremy Glickand for the additional research. It could be Oradell *or* Saddle River *or* Upper Saddle River, but it could be more than one of the above. No source appears superior, so we should try to reflect the totality of the sources. Alansohn (talk) 23:27, 13 December 2017 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors December 2017 News

Hello copy editors! Welcome to the December 2017 GOCE newsletter, which contains nine months(!) of updates. The Guild has been busy and successful; your diligent efforts in 2017 has brought the backlog of articles requiring copy edit to below 1,000 articles for the first time. Thanks to all editors who have contributed their time and energy to help make this happen.

Our copy-editing drives (month-long backlog-reduction drives held in odd-numbered months) and blitzes (week-long themed editing in even-numbered months) have been very successful this year.

March drive: We set out to remove April, May, and June 2016 from our backlog and all February 2017 Requests (a total of 304 articles). By the end of the month, all but 22 of these articles were cleared. Officially, of the 28 who signed up, 22 editors recorded 257 copy edits (439,952 words). (These numbers do not always make sense when you compare them to the overall reduction in the backlog, because not all editors record every copy edit on the drive page.)

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 April; the theme was Requests. Of the 15 who signed up, 9 editors completed 43 articles (81,822 words).

May drive: The goals were to remove July, August, and September 2016 from the backlog and to complete all March 2017 Requests (a total of 300 articles). By the end of the month, we had reduced our overall backlog to an all-time low of 1,388 articles. Of the 28 who signed up, 17 editors completed 187 articles (321,810 words).

June blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 18 through 24 June; the theme was Requests. Of the 16 who signed up, 9 editors completed 28 copy edits (117,089 words).

2017 Coordinator elections: In June, coordinators for the second half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 moved back into the lead coordinator position, with Miniapolis stepping down to remain as coordinator; Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators, and Keira1996 rejoined after an extended absence. Thanks to all who participated!

July drive: We set out to remove August, September, October, and November 2016 from the backlog and to complete all May and June 2017 Requests (a total of 242 articles). The drive was an enormous success, and the target was nearly achieved within three weeks, so that December 2016 was added to the "old articles" list used as a goal for the drive. By the end of the month, only three articles from 2016 remained, and for the second drive in a row, the backlog was reduced to a new all-time low, this time to 1,363 articles. Of the 33 who signed up, 21 editors completed 337 articles (556,482 words).

August blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 20 through 26 August; the theme was biographical articles tagged for copy editing for more than six months (47 articles). Of the 13 who signed up, 11 editors completed 38 copy edits (42,589 words).

September drive: The goals were to remove January, February, and March 2017 from the backlog and to complete all August 2017 Requests (a total of 338 articles). Of the 19 who signed up, 14 editors completed 121 copy edits (267,227 words).

October blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 22 through 28 October; the theme was Requests. Of the 14 who signed up, 8 editors completed 20 articles (55,642 words).

November drive: We set out again to remove January, February, and March 2017 from the backlog and to complete all October 2017 Requests (a total of 207 articles). By the end of the month, these goals were reached and the backlog shrank to its lowest total ever, 997 articles, the first time it had fallen under one thousand (click on the graph above to see this amazing feat in graphical form). It was also the first time that the oldest copy-edit tag was less than eight months old. Of the 25 who signed up, 16 editors completed 159 articles (285,929 words).

2018 Coordinator elections: Voting is open for the election of coordinators for the first half of 2018. Please visit the election page to vote between now and December 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Thanks for participating!

Housekeeping note: We do not send a newsletter before (or after) every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Corinne, Tdslk, and Keira1996.

Civility

As I've said before, I have no problem with you voicing your opinion, but the constant incivility, condescension, assumption of bad faith, and now profanity has got to stop. You don't own Wikipedia WP:OWNERSHIP and should be familiar with WP:Civility--Rusf10 (talk) 20:02, 23 December 2017 (UTC)

Rusf10, in this edit at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bill Zanker you made the rather explicitly abusive threat that "I have now noticed that both you and the subject of the article live in the same town. And to be honest with you, the article List of people from Teaneck, New Jersey should not exist and neither should about half the articles on that list." Now you're shamelessly violating WP:HARASS by following through on that threat, starting with mayors and now working through other people on the exact same list you've targeted in your threat. If you think that trying to delete articles merely because the person has come connection to a place that I have connection to is not in and of itself a violation of the basic norms of WP:CIVILITY you are far more screwed up than I ever imagined. Stay the hell of my talk page and get a life that doesn't involve rather disturbing stalking. Alansohn (talk) 20:12, 23 December 2017 (UTC)

Mode share articles

Hi Alansohn:

The more I think about it, the more I think putting New York metro data in the Newark article is just wrong. I hope you don't mind if I ask a favor. I would like to know about any recent secondary sources on mode share if you run across them. thanks, Oldsanfelipe (talk) 19:09, 26 December 2017 (UTC)

Oldsanfelipe I've seen such data in the past and I've been trying to search for it myself since I left the message for you on your talk page. Thanks for the note and for your additions on this topic. Alansohn (talk) 19:14, 26 December 2017 (UTC)
Sunday January 14: Wikipedia Day NYC 2018

You are invited to join us at Ace Hotel for Wikipedia Day NYC 2018, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference as part of the project's global 16th birthday festivities. In addition to the party, the event will be a participatory unconference, with keynotes, plenary panels, lightning talks, and of course open space sessions.

And there will be cake.

We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from educational and cultural institutions interested in developing free knowledge projects.

10:00am - 6:30 pm at Ace Hotel, 20 West 29th Street in Manhattan

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 18:41, 27 December 2017 (UTC)

John Renna

When you are free can you add the image from https://www.newspapers.com/clip/16115706/john_pasquale_renna_jr_may_19_1920/ to his article under a fair use license? I can only add images to Wikimedia. --RAN (talk) 18:59, 30 December 2017 (UTC)

I haven't clipped it yet, do you have access to Newspapers.com? https://www.newspapers.com/image/222785307/?terms=Andrew%2B%2BRuotolo for Andrew K. Ruotolo , when you have time. --RAN (talk) 05:03, 31 December 2017 (UTC)

  • I don't have access to Newspapers.com, which has many sources in that intermediate, pre-Internet / competitive newspaper era of the type that would establish broad notability for many of the subjects we're dealing with. Depending on finding sources only on what can be Googled leaves people who made their marks in the 1950s to 1970s harder to source. I will upload the Renna source later this morning.
Keep up the great work on expanding articles. The best response to rampant deletionism isn't voting keep at an AfD, it's adding the sources that show a topic is notable and convinces others. Alansohn (talk) 12:56, 31 December 2017 (UTC)

Here is the clipped version, which you should be able to see: https://www.newspapers.com/clip/16133528/andrew_keogh_ruotolo_jr_november_5/, I will also add it to Familysearch, and add the link to Familysearch at Wikidata. Familysearch also allows fair use content. --RAN (talk) 14:03, 31 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of people from Cherry Hill, New Jersey, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Matt Bush (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Peter A. Appel AfD Discussion

Alansohn, Thanks for your note. I’m struggling to justify spending the time required to be a useful contributor. My initial experience in the Appel AfD discussion was very frustrating. I clearly made some rookie mistakes but was taken aback by the condescension and hypocrisy of some of the editors I encountered. And the decision to delete, when no consensus was the obvious call, just highlighted for me how subjective and random these decisions are, particularly when they are close. Not sure I want to participate in a system where the rules are so ambiguous and so many of the other participants have their own agendas and biases. Bernice McCullers (talk) 01:02 3 January 2018 —Preceding undated comment added 06:03, 3 January 2018 (UTC)

  • Bernice McCullers, having a connection to one and only one Wikipedia article is a very two-edged sword. You feel strongly about the article, but what happens to it feels personal. The broader your editing interests, the more satisfying editing can be and the less it feels that anything that happens to the article is an attack on you. Takes it easy, look around and find some broader areas of interest. Let me know what I can do to help.

High Point Regional High School

Hi, could you please explain this edit? Correcting mistakes doesn't constitute interference. And the point of {{sic}} is to mark something in quoted text as being an accurate quotation and therefore not to be 'corrected'. But this instance is not in quoted text at all. — Smjg (talk) 13:09, 2 January 2018 (UTC)

Correcting mistakes? Where is there a mistake? Alansohn (talk) 17:38, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
Exactly where you added one. I don't understand your question. Moreover, you made that edit, so regardless you must know why you did it. — Smjg (talk) 18:01, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
I don't understand your statement that you are "correcting mistakes". What mistake are you correcting? I'm looking through the entire article and I don't see anythng that needs to be corrected. In this case, you made that edit, so regardless you must know why you did it. Alansohn (talk) 18:47, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
What are you talking about? The edit I posted a link to is one that you made. And it shows the mistake you added quite clearly. If it wasn't you, it would appear that someone else has gained access to your user account. — Smjg (talk) 22:27, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
I keep on looking at the edit that I made and I still see no mistake. What mistake are you talking about? If you are "correcting mistakes", why not state what the mistake is that you believe you are correcting. Alansohn (talk) 01:32, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
Two things:
  • The phrase "comprised of" is incorrect. OK, so this is disputed, but it's much better to use language that is undisputedly correct.
  • You used {{sic}} for something that isn't in a quotation.
Furthermore, I didn't feel the need to go redundantly into the specifics here, as you could see what was changed by viewing the diff page. And the basic question I asked is why you made the edit. Whether you think it's a mistake or not is irrelevant to this question. Also, what on earth do you mean by "avoid copy editing interference"? — Smjg (talk) 18:52, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
Smjg, the basic question is why *you* have made the edit. Reviewing your user page, it's apparent that the issue is that you -- based on your personal beliefs and quaint local dialect -- believe that the term "comprised of" is a "mistake". Here in the United States, we don't believe that to be the case. We proudly state that "the United States is comprised of 50 states" and sometimes extend "comprised of" as a warm greeting to friends, neighbors (never "neighbours") and other various and sundry passersby. In the UK variant of the common language that divides us, you use spellings such as "kerb" and "centre", while Americans write "curb" and "center". Per WP:ENGVAR, it's inappropriate to impose these changes on an article, especially where there is a strong national connection. As the schools here are firmly anchored in the soil of the United States and as there is no objection to the use of "comprised of" here in his country (perhaps due to the far lower levels of grammar prigs who believe that it is wrong to split infinitives, dangle a participle and other such nanny state prescriptivism), I see no reason to treat uses of "comprised of" as a "mistake". I'm guessing that Lynne Truss would be 100% on your side, but that support should be limited to articles where a strong UK connection exists. I can assure you that I won't be updating UK-based articles and inserting "comprised of"; I hope that you will observe the same effort to avoid copy editing interference. Alansohn (talk) 19:13, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
Are you saying the "be made up of" meaning of "comprise" doesn't exist in US English? It does according to most if not all the OneLook listings. On this basis, the first subsection of the section you've referred me to applies, so your edit is the inappropriate one. — Smjg (talk) 23:59, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

MOS:NUMS, WP:SELFPUB

Hello Alansohn -- Last night I started getting a bot-edit as I was publishing articles. It would, apparently, check for references with the same base URL as the subject. I either had to edit the article, or confirm that they were to stay in. Most of what I edited out were claims that would have been troublesome to verify elsewise, to wit: "best in the state" and similar claims.

As to MOS:NUMS, it appears you want me to use AP style: spell zero to nine and use digits for others. I prefer the Chicago style: zero to one hundred. It appears that MOS:NUMS allows the spelling of any two-word number. All numbers zero to one hundred can be described in two words or less. I hope that is okay with you. Thanks for watching out for me. Rhadow (talk) 15:48, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

  • Rhadow, I agree that you have to be careful for promotional claims sourced to the article's subject, but the nature of the details included here meet the criteria of WP:SELFPUB; I am curious to know what bot is detecting these references with the same base URL as the subject. Numbers from 10 to 99 *can* be spelled out using words per MOS:NUMS and I would support writing out numbers in articles where the details are being added. However, there appears to be no reason to change two-digit values from numbers to words in cases where there is a consistent standard that already exists within an article. Alansohn (talk) 16:17, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

When I see it again, I'll take notes. Rhadow (talk) 16:32, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

Come on

Alansohn, you know there is no way this edit summary is true, and I'm disappointed you think you can pull the wool over my eyes in this way. "Integral part" is horse shit, and you know it. Drmies (talk) 20:53, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

  • Drmies, please allow me to return the favor of a reply to your horse shit that "'Integral part' is horse shit, and you know it.".
If, as in this edit, you believe that the classic novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn set in Williamsburg is "trivial", that is horse shit. If by that edit you meant that it (and other easily sourced content) must be deleted because it was "unverified", you have never read WP:PRESERVE and that too is horse shit. If you believe that changing citation formats doesn't violate WP:CITEVAR,again, horse shit. If, as in this edit, you believe that brief quotations included in references must be removed, more horse shit. If you believe that this edit with a meaningless one-word edit summary of "more" in which thousands of characters of brief quotations were removed is justified by policy, yet more horse shit. If you believe that Template:Cite_news doesn't include a quote parameter that is designed and intended to display "Relevant text quoted from the source" and that is used in tens of thousands of Wikipedia articles as an "integral part" of our encyclopedia, we are dealing with steaming mounds of horse shit.
If you are a Wikipedia administrator and believe that you have some privileged access to my thoughts and can be arrogant enough to believe as in the above edit that it is acceptable to violate WP:NPA, that is total horse shit. Feel free to refactor your horse shit comments above and start a mature and productive conversation on the topic at the article's talk page and get consensus for your position that brief quotations must be removed from references. Alansohn (talk) 21:21, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
    • Yeah, if no secondary sources make hay of the fact that this or that novel is set in this or that place, it's trivial at least for our purposes. Have a great day, Drmies (talk) 23:38, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Heinie Benkert

On 21 January 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Heinie Benkert, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Good afternoon! I saw your edits on the aforementioned page, and you mentioned "updating" some refs. I'm curious why you formatted it the way you did, when I already had it as {{Cite web}} or {{Cite news}}. That being said, I'm also wondering if you have any resources on the city that could help, as I'm interested in improving the article, which will be my first for a city in NJ. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:03, 29 December 2017 (UTC)

While I appreciate this edit updating the city council members, I didn't appreciate you changing the format of the reference. I intend to improve this article in the future to become a Good article, if not featured article, and for that, the citations need to be in Template:Cite web format. That being said, I do see you editing the city article a lot. Would you like to collaborate on any articles city-related? I have updated City Hall recently, I intend to write an article about the Music Pier, maybe the Boardwalk. What do you think? I also have an article that's under construction for List of mayors of Ocean City, New Jersey. Do you have any information on any of the missing mayors? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:17, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
Hurricanehink, there is so much work that could be done on the topics that you've listed and I hope to be able to help you collaboratively with that effort. I've been involved with other GA efforts, where there were no changes needed to citation formats. The changes to citation format conflict with WP:CITEVAR and should be unnecessary, even for GA status. If they are indeed required, they should probably be the last changes made, rather than the first, with the focus being on adding content and sourcing any material that needs referencing. I should certainly be able to help with mayors. Let me know what I can do to help.
I notice that I had not replied to your previous message, which seems to have arrived with some other messages that caught my focus before I noticed the previous message. Sorry, but I'm glad that I was finally able to reply, albeit belatedly. Alansohn (talk) 02:42, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. You're right, I may have violated WP:CITEVAR with my edits, apologies. I thought using the template was a requirement, but it turns out it's not! I'm just used to adding them, so when I was adding content, I went with the citation method I'm used to. It's the citing method I've used for over 10 years, so apologies from this old user for not following the rules. I can change back the citations if you want, or I can continue to convert them over. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:03, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
Hurricanehink, the general rule seems to be to maintain a consistent citation standard in an article. There's no reason to change them over, unless they're outliers from the prevailing standard, but old habits die hard. If the main focus is on adding and improving content, then we're probably headed in the right direction. Again, let me know if I can help with expansion efforts. Alansohn (talk) 16:14, 23 January 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, agreed. I'll check in the Ocean City Library this week to see if I can get the List of Mayors page completed. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:16, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Also, I didn't want to start a new thread for this, but I saw User:Alansohn/New Jersey municipalities in alpha order. I wanted to point out that Princeton borough and township merged. I wasn't sure if that list was more historical or not. I appreciate all of the work you have done for New Jersey articles! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:04, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

I created that back in 2011, I think related to Census data. I'm not sure that I need it for much else, but the Princetons are merged everywhere else, especially where it matters. Alansohn (talk) 23:07, 23 January 2018 (UTC)

Your recent editing history at Mater Dei High School (New Jersey)‎ shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Doug Weller talk 15:25, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

  • Doug Weller, my recent edit history shows that I've added sources to address concerns raised by previous editors about content that his been in the article for almost seven years; your recent edit history shows that you simplyrefusing to address the issues raised about failing to comply with WP:BRD. Yur patently bad faith claim of "edit warring" only undermines any credibility or legitimacy that you might have at this article. If you won't discuss issues and prefer to do your edit warring via template, you accomplish nothing. If you want to discuss the issue, head to the article's talk page. The conversation is over here if this is the best you can do to legitimize the removal of sourced content without discussion. Alansohn (talk) 15:31, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
It's not a bad faith claim, you're at 3RR. BRD isn't even a guideline. I've raised the general issue at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Schools#When is it appropriate for material about a teacher sexually assaulting a pupil to be in the school's article. That it happened isn't a reason to include it in the school's article unless there is evidence that the school was at fault. And you haven't shown that. Doug Weller talk 15:41, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

DYK for Walter M. D. Kern

On 1 February 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Walter M. D. Kern, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. Hello. Why did you revert my edit where I added Esther E. Baldwin to the Marlton, New Jersey page in the Notable People section? She was born in the town, and I included a ref to a RS. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:32, 15 February 2018 (UTC)

GOCE February 2018 news

Guild of Copy Editors February 2018 News

Welcome to the February 2018 GOCE newsletter in which you will find Guild updates since the December edition. We got to a great start for the year, holding the backlog at nine months. 100 requests were submitted in the first 6 weeks of the year and were swiftly handled with an average completion time of 9 days.

Coordinator elections: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2018 were elected. Jonesey95 remained as lead coordinator and Corrine, Miniapolis and Tdslk as assistant coordinators. Keira1996 stepped down as assistant coordinator and was replaced by Reidgreg. Thanks to all who participated!

End of year reports were prepared for 2016 and 2017, providing a detailed look at the Guild's long-term progress.

January drive: We set out to remove April, May, and June 2017 from our backlog and all December 2017 Requests (a total of 275 articles). As with previous years, the January drive was an outstanding success and by the end of the month all but 57 of these articles were cleared. Officially, of the 38 who signed up, 21 editors recorded 259 copy edits (490,256 words).

February blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 February, focusing on Requests and the last articles tagged in May 2017. At the end of the week there were only 14 pending requests, with none older than 20 days. Of the 11 who signed up, 10 editors completed 35 copy edits (98,538 words).

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Corinne, Tdslk, and Reidgreg.

WikiCup 2018 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the competition, with 4 points required to qualify for round 2. With 53 contestants qualifying, the groups for round 2 are slightly smaller than usual, with the two leaders from each group due to qualify for round 3 as well as the top sixteen remaining users.

Our top scorers in round 1 were:

  • United States Aoba47 led the field with a featured article, 8 good articles and 42 GARs, giving a total of 666 points.
  • Germany FrB.TG , a WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points, gained from a featured article and masses of bonus points.
  • India Ssven2, another WikiCup newcomer, was in third place with 403 points, garnered from a featured article, a featured list, a good article and twelve GARs.
  • United States Ceranthor, India Numerounovedant, Minnesota Carbrera, Netherlands Farang Rak Tham and Romania Cartoon network freak all had over 200 points, but like all the other contestants, now have to start again from scratch. A good achievement was the 193 GARs performed by WikiCup contestants, comparing very favourably with the 54 GAs they achieved.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! Page move?

Wouldn't a more appropriate title be County executives of Atlantic County, New Jersey be County Executive of Atlantic County, New Jersey? Seeing as it is a political position such as Mayor of..., Governor of,? Djflem (talk) 20:47, 26 February 2018 (UTC)

  • Djflem, that might well make more sense, the only question is the timing. Alansohn (talk) 16:39, 27 February 2018 (UTC)
    • I yield to your discretion. Meanwhile, would at User:Djflem/CEHC and make changes/suggestions? Needs work. Djflem (talk) 14:49, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
    • Djflem - CEHC is a start, but it needs additional expansion. It's hard to believe that one bitter editor with an axe to grind is pointing a gun that forces the creation of articles like this one. And to think that this all started because I voted to Keep an article he thought should be deleted, to which he did the natural thing by stalking me to my place of residence and starting to delete all articles related to my hometown. Pure spite should never be a reason to delete articles. Sorry that you now have to bear the brunt of this editor's rampage against me and the entire state of New Jersey. Alansohn (talk) 15:27, 28 February 2018 (UTC)
Sorry for stalking, I agree with Djflem's title for the page, that the capitalized E looks better. However, if you check the AfD, I've listed a whole bunch of similar pages with different naming conventions and it seems to be lowercase e when plural (executives) and capitalized when singular (Executive), so it's really how you want the page to go, Alansohn. In the end it works both ways, but if @Djflem: is making a page in the same category we should at least have consistency across the NJ pages. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 18:58, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
Semmendinger, I agree on the title and I'd move it once the AfD is closed successfully. Thanks for the suggestion. Alansohn (talk) 21:04, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
Along the same theme. User:Djflem/CEBC. Would like to float ths article, but would appreciate feedback (edits if you're inclined}. before doing so. Would like to avoid problems, if you know what I mean.Djflem (talk) 17:45, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
Djflem, I had been about to create an article along those lines when I saw your draft. I will take another look at the CEBC draft article, but it appears to be as strong, if not stronger, than other such Wikipedia material that has received support from the community. You have my full support to move ahead at your timing. Alansohn (talk) 18:11, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
Semmendinger & Alansohn. Bergen County Executive is up. Improvement/wikifying welcome.Djflem (talk) 08:15, 15 March 2018 (UTC)
Semmendinger & Alansohn Hudson County Executive is up, needs checking, if you'd be so kind.Djflem (talk) 22:42, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
Hudson looks good; I'll make a few tweaks. Semmendinger and Djflem, Essex County Executive is now live and would benefit from a few more pairs of eyes. Anyone for Mercer? Or willing to past odds on a backlash? Alansohn (talk) 02:59, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
Semmendinger & Alansohn. Went live w/last of series: Mercer County Executive: could likely need some further research/refs, expansion. Question, one linking article on one person is very weak. Do a redirect right away or let it play out?Djflem (talk) 14:33, 23 March 2018 (UTC)

IBAN Violation

Information icon There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved.

I don't see any way this is not a violation of your interaction ban. Can you justify it? --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 03:28, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
SarekOfVulcan, the response I made was to Bearcat, with whom there is no interaction ban. If the IBAN means that one editor WP:OWN's every AfD that that editor creates with no opportunity to participate in any manner, I have never seen that condition stated. Alansohn (talk) 05:26, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
SarekOfVulcan, the terms stated above in th Interaction Ban notification state: "The purpose of an interaction ban (IBAN) is to stop a conflict between individuals. A one-way interaction ban forbids one user from interacting with another user. A two-way interaction ban forbids both users from interacting with each other. Although the interaction-banned users are generally allowed to edit the same pages or discussions so long as they avoid each other, they are not allowed to interact with each other. Editors subject to an interaction ban are not permitted to: 1) edit each other's user and user talk pages; 2) reply to each other in discussions; 3) make reference to or comment on each other anywhere on Wikipedia, directly or indirectly; 4) undo each other's edits to any page, whether by use of the revert function or by other means; 5) use the thanks extension to respond to each other's edits." These terms have been and will be complied with. There is no ownership right stated regarding AfDs or any other pages in the terms stated. Alansohn (talk) 05:31, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

Your post was clearly a "reply to each other in discussions" because you addressed the arguements for deletion, citing the same page as used to justify deletion by the nom. In my view every post on an AfD is a reply to the nomination. Further the discussion that lead to the IBAN specifically discussed the IBAN would stop you from commenting on Rusf10's AfDs. Since you take such a terribly narrow view of IBAN we shall propose expanding the scope. Legacypac (talk) 06:07, 2 April 2018 (UTC)

Making the same point? Rusf nomination was one sentence, Bearcat's reply 189 words in length and involved his interpretation of NPOL. Same point? Yep if you believe a hill in Wales and Mt. WikiCup 2018 May newsletter

The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
  • Republic of Texas Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
  • India Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
  • United States Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
  • San Francisco Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
  • South Carolina Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs

So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! DYK for Essex County Executive

On 24 April 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Essex County Executive, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that when the first Essex County Executive was elected in New Jersey in 1978, The New York Times described the position as "considered by many to be second in power only to that of the Governor"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Essex County Executive. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Essex County Executive), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

June 2018 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2018 News

Welcome to the June 2018 GOCE newsletter, in which you will find Guild updates since the February edition. Progress continues to be made on the copyediting backlog, which has been reduced to 7 months and reached a new all-time low. Requests continue to be handled efficiently this year, with 272 completed by the end of May (an average completion time of 10.5 days). Fewer than 10% of these waited longer than 20 days, and the longest wait time was 29 days.

Wikipedia in general, and the Guild in particular, experienced a deep loss with the death on 20 March of Corinne. Corinne (a GOCE coordinator since 1 July 2016) was a tireless aide on the requests page, and her peerless copyediting is a part of innumerable GAs and FAs. Her good cheer, courtesy and tact are very much missed.

March drive: The goal was to remove June, July and August 2017 from our backlog and all February 2018 Requests (a total of 219 articles). This drive was an outstanding success, and by the end of the month all but eight of these articles were cleared. Of the 33 editors who signed up, 19 recorded 277 copy edits (425,758 words).

April blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 15 through 21 April, focusing on Requests and the last eight articles tagged in August 2017. At the end of the week there were only 17 pending requests, with none older than 17 days. Of the nine editors who signed up, eight editors completed 22 copy edits (62,412 words).

May drive: We set out to remove September, October and November 2017 from our backlog and all April 2018 Requests (a total of 298 articles). There was great success this month with the backlog more than halved from 1,449 articles at the beginning of the month to a record low of 716 articles. Officially, of the 20 who signed up, 15 editors recorded 151 copy edits (248,813 words).

Coordinator elections: It's election time again. Nominations for Guild coordinators (who will serve a six-month term for the second half of 2018) have begun, and will close at 23:59 UTC on 15 June. All Wikipedia editors in good standing are eligible, and self-nominations are encouraged. Voting will take place between 00:01 UTC on 16 June and 23:59 UTC on 30 June.

June blitz: Stay tuned for this one-week copy-editing blitz, which will take place in mid-June.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Corinne, Jonesey95, Miniapolis, Reidgreg and Tdslk.

WikiCup 2018 July newsletter

The third round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it to the fourth round had at least 227 points. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • South Carolina Courcelles, a first time contestant, with 1756 points, a tally built largely on 27 GAs related to the Olympics
  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with two featured articles and three GAs on natural history and astronomy topics
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with a variety of submissions related to transport in the state of Washington

Contestants managed 7 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 120 good articles, 1 good topic, 124 DYK entries, 15 ITN entries, and 132 good article reviews. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 458 GA reviews, in comparison to 244 good articles submitted for review and promoted. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process; several submissions, particularly in abstruse or technical areas, have needed additional work to make them completely verifiable.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Re: Thanks

Thank you for the kind words Alan! I have to extend my thanks to you for doing tireless editing work that the general public might not notice. My friend's philosophy is, "If not me, then who?" I feel the same philosophy about Wikipedia. Someone will eventually fix up these articles, but there are only so many editors, and so much time. I'm happy to edit articles about my own back yard. I plan on using what I learn from my articles to build a political campaign one day. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:05, 11 July 2018 (UTC)

Have to chime in, Alan don't kill me, but it really is a pleasure to work with you Alan and improve various pages across NJ. You are a terrific editor here and I thank you very much for all your hard working efforts to make all kinds of improvements to this site. I am in the midst of starting new pages related to NJ, if you are all interested in participating feel free. Hurricaneink I want to thank you for your continuous efforts as well and I hope to collaborate with you improving/creating new pages in the future. Tinton5 (talk) 00:37, 13 July 2018 (UTC)

Blocked 1 week. --SarekOfVulcan (talk) 00:39, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

SarekOfVulcan, gain, the violation was inadvertent and was removed. I got the point and now that I know that the editor is back I will be far more careful. I had spent months checking edit histories of every article I edit to make sure that there is no potential violation. Seeing a lengthy gap, my guard was down and I missed it. I can assure you that I couldn't tell you who had nominated any of the last dozen articles I voted on, even with a gun to my head. I will be far more careful in the future. Alansohn (talk) 00:41, 15 August 2018 (UTC)

  • Hi Alan. I have closed the ANI thread. Your topic ban has been extended indefinitely. Note that you may appeal this at WP:AN in the future, and requesting a standard offer unban (after six months with no violations) would be a good way of going about that. As Rusf10's corresponding topic ban is still set to expire, the community has granted you an exception to allow you to respond to any deletion nominations where you have created or significantly contributed the article in question. In such situations, you will be allowed a single statement of any length as long as it is content-based and not personally directed at Rusf10 in any way. This is not to say that Rusf10 will be allowed to harass or bait you, but if you feel that's happening you'll need to report that at AN or ANI and not violate the terms of the IBAN. See the ANI thread or the updated IBAN at WP:EDRC for details, and let me know if you have any questions. Regards, Swarm 14:16, 19 August 2018 (UTC)

WikiCup 2018 September newsletter

The fourth round of the 2018 WikiCup has now come to an end. The eight users who made it to the final round had to score a minimum of 422 points to qualify, with the top score in the round being 4869 points. The leaders in round 4 were:

  • South Carolina Courcelles scored a magnificent 4869 points, with 92 good articles on Olympics-related themes. Courcelles' bonus points alone exceeded the total score of any of the other contestants!
  • Hel, Poland Kees08 was second with 1155 points, including a high-scoring featured article for Neil Armstrong, two good topics and some Olympics-related good articles.
  • Scotland Cas Liber, with 1066 points, was in third place this round, with two featured articles and a good article, all on natural history topics.
  • Other contestants who qualified for the final round were Marshall Islands Nova Crystallis, Republic of Texas Iazyges, Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack and United States Ceranthor.

During round four, 6 featured articles and 164 good articles were promoted by WikiCup contestants, 13 articles were included in good topics and 143 good article reviews were performed. There were also 10 "in the news" contributions on the main page and 53 "did you knows". Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Some content you added to the above article back in January appears to have been copied in part from The New York Times. Copying text directly from a source is a copyright violation. Unfortunately, for copyright reasons, some of the content had to be removed. All content you add to Wikipedia must be written in your own words. Please leave a message on my talk page if you have any questions. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 18:15, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Diannaa, while I am certain that your claims of copyright violation are false, in your roles as judge, jury and executioner, you have also removed any of the evidence of the alleged crime. Solely based on what I've recalled, this would hardly be the first time that you have taken an absolutist stand on perceived copyright violations in a circumstance where the claim was unjustified. I'm sure that you believe that you are correct, but you leave no mechanism to challenge your alleged thought crimes. Alansohn (talk) 19:23, 2 September 2018 (UTC)

Please remove edit

Mr. Sohn, My name is Steve Grayberg. I am working with the Pompton Lakes NJ Mayor and select council members to try to improve the Borough’s on-line presence. According to edit history, you have placed an edit about a specific newspaper series earlier this year on the Wikipedia Pompton Lakes general information page. Having looked at some of your work, we recognize that you are a prolific Wikipedia contributor, and that you mean to improve the information available through this medium.

However, please understand that to most people, placing an edit about a specific newspaper piece in the middle of a general article containing, geography, history and census information, appears more like vandalism, or at least bad faith. We ask that you remove this edit (#27) from that page.

If you feel strongly that the information is needed, then please find a more relevant place for it. Thank you.2601:41:C101:82C0:D12D:AA8A:A696:E246 (talk) 19:24, 11 September 2018 (UTC)Steve Grayberg, Pompton Lakes resident.

2601:41:C101:82C0:D12D:AA8A:A696:E246 - Mr. Grayberg, I appreciate your efforts on behalf of the municipality, but you should definitely review the limitations placed by Wikipedia's policy on conflict of interest, which are intended to deal with this exact type of issue relating to the tension of what should be included in an article about a place. I don't see any reason to remove the details regarding contamination, and its health impacts, related to the defunct DuPont facility, and I'm certainly not sure that it would be considered "bad faith", let alone "vandalism", to include the material, which is most certainly encyclopedic. After further consideration, I have moved the material from the lead and placed it in the history section, which includes other details about the plant. Alansohn (talk) 18:06, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
Notice

The article Intel Schools of Distinction has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This article is clearly a leftover from earlier times. A big corporation gave an education grant for a couple years. No indication of general notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. This month will also feature on our agenda, upcoming editathons, the organization's Annual Meeting, and Chapter board elections - you can add yourself as a candidate.

We will include a look at the organization and planning for our chapter, and expanding volunteer roles for both regular Wikipedia editors and new participants.

We will also follow up on plans for recent and upcoming edit-a-thons, museum and library projects, education initiatives, and other outreach activities.

7:00pm - 9:00 pm at Babycastles gallery, 145 West 14th Street
(note the new address, a couple of doors down from the former Babycastles location)

We especially encourage folks to add your 5-minute lightning talks to our roster, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues! --Pharos (talk) 20:42, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

User:Doriden edits

Do you think we should report this editor for constant disruptive edits? Tinton5 (talk) 12:41, 17 September 2018 (UTC)

  • Tinton5, I think that this editor is incredibly misguided, but I'm not sure what to do next. The failure to communicate makes matters worse, but the edits do seem to be based on reliable information, though I have no idea what the sources are (none are ever provided) or why the editor insists on bizarre formatting (Such As Using All Initial Capitalization). I'm scratching my head, but I'd like to find a way to reach out to this person, correct the issues and turn out a productive editor.
I also want to thank you for all of the work you've done adding material, sources and categories. Kudos to you! Alansohn (talk) 16:03, 18 September 2018 (UTC)
My pleasure, and many thanks to you as well for the same things. I have a question, when you added info to Anthony DeAngelo, along with other biographical pages, adding in their hometown of Sewell, part of Washington Twp, Gloucester County...whereas the Sewell page says it is part of Mantua Twp. Should this be corrected as well as proper category placement? I know that Sewell borders Washington Twp, unless the two overlap. Though the Washington Twp page does include Sewell as part of the town. We have a little contradiction here. I just wanted to clarify this. Tinton5 (talk) 02:37, 21 September 2018 (UTC)
  • Tinton5, I saw that same contradiction. The article for DeAngelo had placed him as being from Sewell, and based on that he had been placed into the category for people from Mantua Township. But the sources for DeAngelo explicitly place him in Sewell and in Washington Township. The Washington Township article lists Sewell as one of the ZIP codes that serves the community. I did my best to find a source (or sources) that places Sewell as covering both Mantua and Washington Township, but I have been unable to do so (though I did find a letter to the editor that argues that Washington Township should have its own ZIP code and mentions Sewell as one of the ZIP codes for Washington Township). I think that the needed change would be to indicate that Sewell covers portions of both Mantua and Washington Townships, but the right sources are needed for that.[page needed]Again, thanks for seeing that same paradox that I had seen. Could you voice your opinion on the map matter, which is half and half at the moment and needs a kick in one direction or another. IWI (chat) 08:31, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

Hi, regarding this edit: https://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=Haddon_Heights_Public_Library&action=history

There are many other NJ public libraries just like this. Are you planning on merging all of those with their respective municipalities? TiMike (talk) 03:11, 1 October 2018 (UTC)

Alansohn, Thanks for the superb explanation! – TiMike (talk) 16:03, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

Do you have access to that? They had a free weekend, so I clipped like 40 articles. I only found out about it like an hour beforehand so I was just rushing. I've found more I would love to see clipped.
