hi, im sorry but i dont know how to fix the page. I just added MASH to the actors credits but the year is also wrong it should be 1980...apologies

It's great that you wanted to add his M*A*S*H credit, but overwriting his Gunsmoke TV movie wasn't the correct way to do it. Editing tables can be challenging. If you need help editing a page, please use the associated talk page - in this case it's Talk:Pat Hingle. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:24, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Page: Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to George Jackson (songwriter) may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page. List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:sisters Elzina, Ruby , Emma Lee, and 3 brothers Willie, Montana, Douglas. [Indianola, Mississippi]], Jackson moved with his family to Greenville at the age of five.

This was not a false positive. You added references below the {{reflist}} template, not above it within the article text itself; that did cause an error because the template can only display footnotes defined above it. Frze fixed that, but the footnotes should be moved out of the references section altogether and should instead be put immediately after the statements they're cited for. If a Wikipedia page does not allow me to display my hard earned accoplishments and someone else can delte my entries, then it's time for my whole page/entry to be deleted. This all started because there was a notice that my page needed links, which I tred to add. After years of having no problem, this is just too much trouble. These confusions is not worth it. Thank you

Wikipedia is not the place for self-promotion. You provided not a single third-party source for all your hard-earned accomplishments; thus they were removed. Also, you do not own that article; it seems that you do satisfy Wikipedia's guideline for notability; thus we will have an article about you even if it doesn't look the way you would like it to look. You should also take a look at our guideline on conflicts of interest. Writing about yourself is not a good idea. Huon (talk) 00:44, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Comment/question: mathematics like n>1 is interpreted like mistake. :-( (and the smiles too) :-( EdwardGoldobin (talk) 00:25, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

These are known issues. The bot keeps an eye on <> because they're used for HTML tags where a mismatch can easily make half an article vanish from sight. That's vastly more common on Wikipedia than the mathematical use. Smileys are much rarer still; I expect a "smiley detector" that wouldn't have false positives of its own would be exceedingly difficult to program and not worth the few smileys within articles. @MrCellular: Because that would require a very high level of AI. Also, it can't detect existing problems, only those which are caused by the edit. Also, there are a lot of false positives, so it is always better for a human to go through them. --Mdann52talk to me! 11:05, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Is this a joke? I mean are you serious with your last sentence? Are you like Siri? MrCellular (talk) 12:02, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

I have no idea what Siri's stance on this issue is, but it's a fact that there are quite a few false positives, and having a human look at the issues pointed out by the bot is far better than the mayhem the bot would cause on its own. Huon (talk) 23:36, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Weglinde (talk) 13:15, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

The bot checks only new edits, not articles, and it produces a notification only if a new edit adds mismatched brackets. So technically you could deliberately add a mismatched bracket to a page to have the bot point out all issues on that page, but I wouldn't recommend that. Instead I double-checked the old bot messages; all seems to be resolved now. Huon (talk) 23:36, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
@Weglinde: A930913 just pointed out that there is a way to check a page for remaining mismatched brackets: Here. Huon (talk) 00:00, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Comment/question: I've raised this issue before, apparently to no avail, but I'll try again. BracketBot notices appear in my talk page at a section with the title ==<Month> <Year>==. If that section does not exist, and BracketBot creates it at the end of my talk page, that's fine. But when BracketBot insists on leaving all further messages within this page section, even after the page has moved on with other discussions, it makes it VERY hard to find the later notices. Can you please update the BOT to place new notices at the bottom of a user's talk page? Perhaps with a new heading "Notes from BracketBot" or something like that? Thanks! See Template:Infobox football biography. Page: The original reason for reviewing the issue in question was the article on The English Patient (1996; movie) that had a distinction from the British Oscar equivalent which The English Patient page was linked to the BFI top 100 films article which then used a url source that shows up as an error message--page not found. But the url on the BFI website had been updated and when that was used to update the reference that is when the error message came up with Wiki

Diff:

Comment/question: The way the current BFI article is set up is that it states what were at the time the list was established as the top 100 British films So when links are to that page it is to an older list that at some time may be reissued with the latest top 100 filmslist. So the article should probably be changed to the BFI's top 100 films list"s" and the table in it used to track the rank of each movie on each list. I believe I left a note on the talk page about this to get a consensus about it. But I am concerned that if there are other articles that link to that article then how is it possible to identify all the links so that as part of the project the links can be updated? I suggested this because there is an American Institute of Film top 100 lists article with a table that includes each succeeding list. So that article will have a continuing value whereas the BFI article stays at the issuance of the original list.

The bot has roughly a 50-50 chance of getting something like this right: Should it consider the outermost bracket mismatched, or the innermost? I agree that when the bot gets it wrong it's both confucing and possibly a lot of work to find the true error, but I can't think of a way to guarantee better results without giving the bot a full understanding of wiki syntax, and even that wouldn't help if it were merely parentheses in text. I mean, suppose in an article one reference link may have multiple referable issues In fact, the same reference needs to add again and again in different paragraph of the same article. In such case, in this https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Isabelle_Eberhardt article I saw, each reference is being used by a common identification / name. Only first time the whole reference is adding, but wherever it needs again, there only using the ID/common name/identification code and that’s all Please, let me understand this process. Because, I am intended to create some new articles having philosophical value. In those, I need such an option to avoid repletion of any same reference.

With best regards…

Sufidisciple (talk) 12:33, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

@Sufidisciple: See Help:Referencing for beginners#Same reference used more than once. In short, the first time you use <ref name="Some name">Text of the footnote</ref>, and you can refer to the same source again via <ref name="Some name" />. Don't forget the slash at the end, though, or things will be misinterpreted badly! Huon (talk) 18:53, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Meatsgains (talk) 00:32, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

There was one reference in the "external links" section. {{reflist}} will only display references above it, so moving the sections into the preferred order had the side effect of no longer displaying that reference and producing the error. Since that reference wasn't all that necessary anyway, I have removed it. Huon (talk) 00:59, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

The bot notified you about a mismatched curly bracket which you since removed yourself. However, I don't quite understand your reasoning. You want to add a link to stad.com because they display the name incorrectly? That doesn't make any sense to me. Sources in the article are very, very poor, with most of the government sites not mentioning the village at all, for all I can tell - I couldn't get either the postcode website or the 2001 census to give any results for "Meethari Marwar" (or for "Mitri", for that matter). I have removed the surplus parenthesis. Huon (talk) 21:31, 12 February 2014 (UTC)

I was warned that a edit of mine produced a URL error. Given I have edited a bunch of URLs it would be much helpful if you had pointed out exactly what triggered the error detection algorithm.

Note that he report page / template is completely obnoxious, it turns a relatively simple task, writing a report, into a scary thing, with a big, huge, box on the top of the page overlapping some mysterious text that may or may not be important (apparently it is not, « [...] then clickest thou mouse pointer towards thy "Save Page" button, who registering the click, shall send it. Amen.»?! Really, that is report instructions?).

Nabla (talk) 14:35, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

The error will show up in red on the article in question, usually either in the references section or, for more severe errors, in the place where the reference itself is. See here. For at least some of the errors the bot will notify users about it may be difficult to point out which part of the edit caused them, but for URL errors and the like that should be possible.
The report page is the standard edit window, with a custom text that's supposed to hide what you normally see when you edit A930913's talk page, but obviously doesn't quite (thanks for pointing that out!), and some stuff for archival purposes. Huon (talk) 22:51, 17 February 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. Oh! Good thing there is a silly box, so we do not need to see the text beneath it, though I actually was more worried about the pre-loaded text. (Hmm. let's see... where do I sign to exclude this bot from ever again writing anything on my talk page...) - Nabla (talk) 23:56, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

Marvin Ruder 20:00, 7 January 2014 (UTC)

Sorry to butt in. @Ruder.marvin: You are correct the syntax is valid, but commons:File:Außenansicht des Gymnasiums Athenaeum in Stade (Quelle- "http---www-bundesfinanzministerium-de-Content-DE-Standardartikel-Themen-Oeffentliche Finanzen-Foederale Finanzbeziehungen-Kommunales Zukunftsinvestitio 2014-01-05 15-00.jpg is a really awful file name which is likely to cause confusion. I suggest you request a renaming there with commons:Template:Rename, for example with the code {{rename|Außenansicht des Gymnasiums Athenaeum in Stade.jpg|1|Source should not be part of name|user={{subst:REVISIONUSER}}}}. Otherwise the first Commons editor who comes by may choose a more suitable name. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:23, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

@Joanna R. Williams: Thank you for fixing the bracket issue. However, that article's sources need quite a bit of cleanup. Many are not the independent, reliable sources we should be using. This in particular includes blogs and Wikipedia itself. It looks even worse than it is because the "last=" and "first" parameters of citation templates are meant to refer to the author of the source, not the article's subject - I doubt Prudden wrote the NYT article about her own death, for example, but it looks as if she did. Huon (talk) 21:02, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

Hello, thank you for your support and help in this endeavor. I have a couple of questions and wanted to check with you first before I make changes. Are you saying that it is not a good idea to use a Wikimedia link as a citation? Also, I did read that personal blogs should not be cited and are you saying the blog that I cited from a University still comes under this category? Would it be best for me to stay away from blogs altogether? I do understand that I have made a mistake with some of the citations by not putting the name of the author of the article in the proper space. I think I got confused when I could not find the author of the piece and thought I should put the subjects name in. Should I leave it blank when no author is listed? Or should I not use the citation if I can not find an author? Thank you very much for your help. I appreciate it. Joanna R. Williams — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joanna R. A Google search is not a good indication of notability. Furthermore, lists such as the one you edited usually should only contain entries we have an article about. Since you have an obvious conflict of interest when writing about yourself, it's probably best not to edit (or write) articles to add content about yourself, but to propose changes on the relevant talk pages so that uninvolved editors can take a look. Wikipedia content should be based on reliable sources that are independent of the subject, such as articles in newspapers and reputable sports magazines. Neither the South-South Nigeria Rugby Football Federation article nor the main Nigeria Rugby Football Federation article satisfies this standard. My suggestion would be to first improve the article on the national federation, not the one on the zonal federation. You should also take a look at our guideline on conflicts of interest. Writing about a topic you're closely associated with is not a good idea because it's difficult to maintain a neutral point of view. Huon (talk) 00:38, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

@Scotsrocker: Roman numerals are usually displayed by letters - I, V, X, L, C, D, and M. Why would you name Charles 2, "Charles 11"? At the very best that would be ambiguous. Bgwhite fixed the problem of the surplus curly brackets. The ">" the bot mentioned were actually false positives; BracketBot keeps an eye on those because they're used in HTML tags, where a mismatch could make half an article vanish. Using them as "arrows" or even as "greater than" will then cause BracketBot warnings about a potential mismatch. I believe there is a tool on the toolserver that can duplicate BracketBot's bracket analysis for a specific page on command, but I can't find it right now, and I dont't think there are remaining problems on that article that would require such a tool.
