Template-protected edit request on 29 June 2020

At the category creations part of the code: Line 329(not exactly sure, true condition for third nested if statement), seems a pipe character is missing: is to be changed to - Timbaaa -> ping me 02:01, 29 June 2020 (UTC) Apply edit specified by Andrybak.- Timbaaa -> ping me 13:08, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

Timbaaa, there appears to be a related problem with the "Wikipedians in the United States" category because it now shows at the bottom of my user page as "Wikipedians in" (no country name after). I think this is all connected somehow to a new category that was created yesterday (see: https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Category:Wikipedians_in). I hope an admin or template specialist can fix this. Cordially, History DMZ (talk)+(ping) 06:10, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
History DMZ, Exactly, that's what led me to finding this. You can see the same thing in the above section #A 2nd custom header?, just above the code block. - Timbaaa -> ping me 07:03, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
@Timbaaa and History DMZ:, the issue stems from the fact that the Category:Wikipedians in (page name ends with "in") exists, it has been recently created by User:Anzio Langeveldt, which introduced a bug in this template. I'll prepare a fix in the sandbox. —andrybak (talk) 12:15, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
Fix is ready: Special:Diff/952105484/965103537. Also, I've replaced template other with more appropriate category handler. The unused parameter |demospace= has been replaced with new parameter |demopage=, which is needed for category handler. —andrybak (talk) 12:26, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
Andrybak, It still creates a stray text "" when the parameter |location= is not used. Check this diff [1]. - Timbaaa -> ping me 12:42, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
@Timbaaa: this is an issue with live template Infobox Wikipedia user. If you test , the issue should be resolved. @Template-editors: please apply Special:Diff/952105484/965103537. —andrybak (talk) 12:46, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
Andrybak, Ahh, I understand. works fine. - Timbaaa -> ping me 12:52, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
I've added a small improvement. Please apply: Special:Diff/952105484/965106475. —andrybak (talk) 12:53, 29 June 2020 (UTC)

@Timbaaa and Andrybak: it appears that the problem has been partially solved. After purging all related pages and templates, the *country* parameter (not location parameter) still produces the broken category "Wikipedians in" (minus country name) in my user page. I believe that Anzio Langeveldt's newly-created category (https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Category:Wikipedians_in) may need to be speedily deleted for the issue to be fully solved. Cordially, History DMZ (talk)+(ping) 01:55, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Update. I've found a temporary solution to the aforementioned problem:
  • If the user answers BOTH the location and country questions, then the category "Wikipedians in country name" does appear correctly.
  • If the user answers the location question (but not the country one also) = OK too.
  • BUT remember, if the user answers the country question (but NOT the location one also), then the category appears broken/incorrectly as "Wikipedians in".
Cordially, History DMZ (talk)+(ping) 12:22, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
Fayenatic, I'm not an expert in this technical area, but based on Andrybak's first comment, the creation of the category page "Wikipedians in" introduced the bug in this template. I think that we should try deleting that new category page and see if it all goes back to normal and if indeed the category ceases to be produced. Cordially, History DMZ (talk)+(ping) 08:30, 12 October 2020 (UTC)
@History DMZ and Andrybak: Thank you! I deleted it and made null edits on a few member pages, and confirm that it is no longer generated. – Fayenatic London 12:24, 12 October 2020 (UTC)

XWilliamson101, if you want to copy/paste this infobox, all you need to do is select the code presented under the Usage section (it starts with {{Infobox Wikipedia user <!-- INFOBOX FORMATTING --------> ) copy it and paste it wherever it is needed (presumably your talk page). Suggestion to change "Preferred pronoun" label —> "Pronouns"

Hello there! I use this template on my User page. Thank you for maintaining it!

As noted at Preferred gender pronoun#Terminology, there is some disagreement over the use of "preferred" when referring to personal pronouns. Some say the "preferred" implies that people are not obliged to use them, and increasingly, people are referring to them as simply "pronouns". It seems sensible that Wikipedians who use the ({pronoun}) parameter might want to have it read simply Pronouns.

Another editor seems to have made a similar request back in 2017 when the field was added.

Thanks, RoxySaunders (talk · contribs) 20:18, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

As no-one has opposed this suggestion for 4 months, I request that the "Preferred pronoun" label be changed to "Pronouns" per the above. Thanks. GreenComputer (talk) 18:10, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

Keep in mind, no one agreed to it either. Personally, I'm indifferent about whether it gets changed or not, but there needs to be more discussion before a consensus is reached. --Diriector_Doc├─────┤TalkContribs 18:20, 8 August 2021 (UTC)
As no-one has opposed the change in 4 months, WP:SILENT would seem to apply (I believe the change would fall under the section on WP:TPECON titled Changes that require at least some discussion, or at least several days passing with no one commenting on your proposal). Multiple userboxes

On a regular PC (15.5-inch, zoom 100–200%), one userbox is displayed on top of each other regardless if they are separated by <br /> tags. In mobile view (on the same PC screen), if the userboxes are separated with <br /> tags as instructed, they display one apiece vertically aligned to the left side of the screen. If the userboxes are not separated with <br /> tags, then they will display two abreast vertically aligned to the left side of the screen.

As far as I can tell (since I don't actually have a mobile device), if this latter option is employed, it fills up the display better instead of leaving a large empty space on the right. A mobile view link is at the bottom of this page, or add .m into the address bar (en.m.wikipedia.org):

I propose it should be considered whether the template's doc should make mention of this rather than explicitly specify separating the userboxes with <br /> tags. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 20:53, 31 July 2021 (UTC)

Mobile format of pages can be viewed by adding ?useformat=mobile at the end of the URL. For instance, the view of the userboxes above in mobile here. I think the <br /> is used to keep them center aligned. – The Grid (talk) 21:35, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
Not done: edit template-protected is usually not required for edits to the documentation or categories of templates using a documentation subpage. Use the 'edit' link at the top of the green "Template documentation" box to edit the documentation subpage. * Pppery * it has begun... 14:31, 10 August 2021 (UTC)
Thank you, Pppery, except I didn't apply Edit template-protected to this thread, I applied Help me because I was inquiring about why the template's documentation was written the way it was. Please reply with your evaluation of my observation as I originally typed. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 03:16, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
To answer the question of why the documentation is written the way it was, the sentence about separating userboxes with breaks was added by Motevets in Special:Diff/979567017, claiming that without break tags, the userboxes don't centre properly. I'm not able to reproduce either visual effect on my browser, for what it's worth.

If you want to edit the documentation to more clearly specify what happens with and without <br/> tags, then I see no reason why you shouldn't go ahead. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:38, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

Based on your reply, I tested it again, replacing the sample userboxes with direct transclusions of . In this test, they still aligned left, but stacked vertically one apiece. The only difference <br /> made was to add a small gap between each userbox rather than butting them up against each other, bottom–top. In light of this, I will adjust the documentation tomorrow (Pacific DST). Thank you for your confirmation. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 04:11, 15 August 2021 (UTC)
That sounds good to me. I assumed that folks would want their Userboxes to be centred, but giving more information is probably better. motevets (talk) 17:30, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

I've been having issues centering anything inside the Infobox. It would be nice if the userboxes could align two abreast and center aligned if there's room, stack one apiece if there isn't room (depending on display and zoom), but still centered. Within the Infobox for different zoom and display modes, I haven't managed to center them (Infobox parameters for appearance above the box such as |title=, will allow for centering with the infobox frame, but won't allow table formatting). Has anyone got the contents inside of an Infobox to center to the box frame, and if so, how? That is pertinent to this discussion. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 20:06, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

Template-protected edit request on 8 September 2021

I would like to update label108, which is the link to the edit counter, converting it from an external link (with the flag on the right), to an interwiki link (see m:Interwiki map at Meta-Wiki). This should avoid the need for the magic word urlencode:, but it might be good to leave that part in.

Current value

  • Edit count
    Edit count

Requested change

  • PATH}}|Edit count

Question: Should the proposed conversion to an interwiki link continue to use the switch |PATH, or should this change to |WIKI? — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 08:25, 8 September 2021 (UTC) (edited 08:53, 8 September 2021 (UTC))

I'm going to ignore your question for a hot second and ask one of my own - why is this necessary? Primefac (talk) 09:58, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
@Primefac: I can see exactly why this is useful. It removes thy little symbol indicating that it's an external link. Their usage can always be subject to skepticism, but if it's not there, it means that it's a trusted site, ut just some random link. Yes, the change is pretty small, but it also looks nicer. That's my take, anyway. --Diriector_Doc├─────┤TalkContribs 14:45, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
@Diriector Doc: I really don't think that the symbol means that a site isn't trusted, just that it takes the reader to an external site. If a link can't be trusted then it should not be put on Wikipedia in the first place. ―Jochem van Hees (talk) 20:39, 8 September 2021 (UTC)
@Primefac: I wasn't trying to say it was a sketchy site or anything. I know what the symbol means; that it's an external link. My point with the lack of symbol ensures that the link will send you to a site associated with Wikipedia. Either way, it was already changed. --Diriector_Doc├─────┤TalkContribs 21:07, 8 September 2021 (UTC)

Gender symbol: opting out

Is there a way to opt out of using the gender symbol? wikinights talk 03:21, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

Isn't that symbol the only thing that indicates the gender in the infobox? ―Jochem van Hees (talk) 08:10, 13 September 2021 (UTC)
I believe there is one alternative symbol—the parameter data being other, or a custom entry—but I haven't looked into it. As for opting out, you can choose to display just the text (no symbol) or both, within the infobox instead of a symbol at the top. I personally don't like the symbol at the top:
|gender= leave blank to not display gender symbol at the top.
|custom_gender=male&nbsp; will display any gender you wish (male in this example) in the infobox instead of at the top, along with the symbol on the same line. Adjust Template:Abbr for your chosen symbol, omit the template for no symbol. If there is something specific you would like, but don't know the Unicode for the symbol, reply and I will look to see if the exists; List of Unicode characters doesn't display everything, and omits some of the decimal codes. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 09:17, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Just a note though, Abbr should only be used for actual abbreviations; here, Tooltip should be used instead. ―Jochem van Hees (talk) 10:08, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Interesting, Jochem van Hees. Infobox Wikipedia user uses Abbr in its source for displaying a gender symbol at the top, as described. Does this mean that the source needs to be updated? — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 11:37, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
Oh you're right, I think they should. ―Jochem van Hees (talk) 12:39, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

They both share the same documentation. Although it is explained in the documentation, more examples are given for Abbr than Tooltip. My current usage is in my sandbox, therefor, I will wait until the template has been edited as requested, and then I will update my usage. Are the parameters that I used exactly the same between the two, or does the different coding necessitate slight changes to my parameter usage? — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 18:30, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

Edit request: replace the four Abbr templates in the subheader with the more semantically correct Tooltip. ―Jochem van Hees (talk) 12:40, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

Current location

For me, the template links Current location to York, England which is a redirect to York. This is a minor thing, but it would be better if the link was direct. The value for data8 tests for location, country existing and then location existing. Are there any issues with swapping the order of the tests so that it uses the direct location first? — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 10:50, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

Yes I imagine there'd be lots of problems, because almost always when an article titled "X, Y" exists, it's because the "Y" is needed for disambiguation (for example, Windsor, Berkshire vs Windsor). ―Jochem van Hees (talk) 12:00, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
Understood. Both ways round will be wrong in some cases — GhostInTheMachine talk to me 12:17, 3 October 2021 (UTC)
I don't know about this location testing and I see nothing in the doc that mentions this, other than assigning a flag to the unlinked country parameter. I apologize if I have misunderstood you. If I've read correctly, you're providing the infobox with a location of York, England, which redirects to York. I believe this is due to notability. For instance, if there are two celebrities with the same name, the one that is more likely to be widely known is more likely to have an article title without a disambiguator. If you wish the location to display "York, England" without a redirect, you could do this manually with a link label for the location parameter, e.g. York, England.
If I've misunderstood you, could you provide a demonstration, either here, or in your sandbox, please? I tried to reproduce your issue (in preview mode), but I didn't see anything special. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 23:41, 3 October 2021 (UTC)

Currently, there is one parameter for a custom header, followed by custom labels 1–9. I am already using my custom header for awards. I propose the creation of either a new header—or a new label under the "Account statistics" header—for listing alternative accounts of said user (not everybody likes using userboxes). Thank you. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 09:35, 2 October 2021 (UTC)

I'm sorry to bother you again, GKFX. I have a couple of minor questions regarding the new parameters. In the source of the documentation example, the new parameters come after signature=, but when the template is implemented, they are displayed prior to the signature. Before I adjust the doc, may I have confirmation as to which order you intend for them to display (before/after sig param)? What would you think about trimming the new parameters from "..._account_1" to "..._acct_1" so that the equal sign column lines up? If it's to be done, better now before people start using it. Thank you for your patience with my requests. — CJDOS, Sheridan, OR (talk) 21:19, 4 October 2021 (UTC)

This template is populating Category:Wikipedians in New York which is a redirect to Category:Wikipedians in New York (state). Can this be fixed? Timrollpickering (talk) 14:59, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

Potentially, but it means a one-off check in line 377 so that instead of populating <Category:Wikipedians in {location}> there's an extra check purely to put (state) after a |location=New York adding in at least two extra checks and about six more lines of code. Not saying it can't be done, just going to think about if there's a better way to handle it. Primefac (talk) 15:12, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

@Pppery: I've just come across what I assume is a related case, where location=Ellensburg, Washington created the ambiguous Category:Wikipedians in Washington, which could be the state or DC Le Deluge (talk) 23:24, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
@Le Deluge: Nothing the template can really do about people passing it ambiguous data. The easiest solution, assuming Special:Diff/1089841217 gets reverted, is to create Category:Wikipedians in Ellensburg, Washington as a redirect to Category:Wikipedians in Washington (state) to override the less specifically named dab page. (The category would fail as a standalone category since Ellensburg, Washington has too few people to support a location category) * Pppery * it has begun... 00:01, 26 May 2022 (UTC)
@Pppery: I understand the theoretical argument, but surely in the real world, the format XXXX, Washington is going to be the state in 99.9% of cases? So it becomes a question of letting perfection being the enemy of the good, and causing extra work for 99.9% of cases. I can live with the argument that just Washington on its own is properly ambiguous. Le Deluge (talk) 12:49, 26 May 2022 (UTC)
Category:Populated places in Washington, D.C. is a fairly extensive category tree, so I'm not so sure of that. * Pppery * it has begun... 13:26, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

GitHub dislikes the unnecessary "www." prefix, and automatically redirects all access to just "github.com" without the subdomain. For instance, "https://www.github.com/LastCelebration" would redirect to "https://github.com/LastCelebration". LastCelebration (talk) 03:11, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi everyone, I am attempting to revive a discussion previously posted on this talk page (now found in Archive 2) on 29 April 2022 by @SlySabre:. We think it would be a good idea to include a "video games" parameter in this infobox. Does anyone else agree? Does anyone disagree? Lotsw73 (talk) 12:27, 10 April 2024 (UTC)

This parameter is set to inlink to the relevant article. When the alignment "neutral good" is entered, the link is erroneously set to Neutral good (Economics), rather than Alignment (Dungeons & Dragons)#Neutral good.

I am not sure whether a similar error is reproduced with any other inputs. Doughbo (talk) 22:55, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

It shouldn't. Where do you see this happening? Primefac (talk) 11:04, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Please add Edit filter helper to the account statistics above Edit filter manager. Code should be something like:

| label103     = {{color|{}|Edit filter helper}}
| data103      = {}

Thanks Primefac, I've gone ahead and updated the documentation with the addition. If you have the time please check if I did it right. Nobody (talk) 12:41, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
Seems okay. Primefac (talk) 12:56, 28 May 2024 (UTC)
