Template talk:Infobox East Asian name

New template

This template has been created as a supplement to {{Infobox Korean name}} and also as a replacement for {{Koreanname Chinesename}}. Although primarily intented for Korea-related articles, Korean name is not a requirement, and the template can display names in any order using the "sort" key (although it cannot display Chinese name first, since this feature would be effectively redundant to the {{Chinese}} template). A more detailed documentation will need to be written at some point, but we'll see how things go first. PC78 16:40, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Chinese name

I have edited the template to allow for the template to show up if the only name specified is in Chinese. It didn't make sense to me for the East Asian name infobox to work solely for Korean, Japanese, or Russian names, but not for Chinese, especially since Template:Chinese is not the same kind of biographical name infobox. I purposely left Chinese out for that very reason: because it's redundant to {{Chinese}}. Neither template is specifically biographical or not; why can't you just use that template for Chinese articles? PC78 (talk) 02:39, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

But it seems to be a template for Chinese words and their translations in other languages, not names of Chinese people. By your logic, though, this template shouldn't allow only Korean, because of Template:Infobox Korean name. After all, other stuff exists, which by your logic makes using this template for Korean names redundant.

From the name of the template, I'd assume that it is an infobox for East Asian names. I was under the impression that Chinese was East Asian. The template already has Chinese name functionality. I just added a line of code that allowed the template to show up if only one of the Chinese name fields were filled out. It was not a huge change and I don't see how it hurt the template it any way. And I have not removed this functionality from the template, though I did not consider its use necessary in the article you added it to (can't remember what that was now). This is also a template for Korean/Japanese/Chinese/Russian names and their transliterations, not specifically for people; I don't see how you can make any distinction in usage between this and {{Chinese}}, or consequently, why you wouldn't want to use {{Chinese}} in a China-related article.

As I think I said when I first created this template, it was created primarily as a supplement to {{Infobox Korean name}}, i.e. where a Korea-related subject required names in additional languages. It certainly shouldn't be used for just Korean names, though it can be useful where there are differences between North and South Korean names. But it also shouldn't be used (IMO) for just Chinese names, because there is {{Chinese}}, or just Japanese names, because IIRC WP:JAPAN prefers usage of {{Nihongo}}, or just Russian names, beacuse this is easy enough to write in the article text. The name of this template is problematic. While {{Chinese}} and {{Nihongo}} make clear on which language they put priority and focus, {{Infobox East Asian name}} inspires use on ambiguous or disputatious topics by misleadingly implying a parity of languages. Unless there is some compelling reason not to, one of three things should happen to this template:

1. It should be merged into {{Infobox Korean name}}
2. It should be renamed to something like {{Infobox extended Korean}}
3. It should be modified to remove its Korean ethnocentric focus

Expanding the Chinese name section of the infobox

I was just editing the Jurchen people article and came across a few issues with this infobox. I am completely ignorant of the coding end of the templates (so forgive me if this request or post is inappropriate), but would like to have it edited and expanded. There are some imperfections which could easily be removed with a minor expansion which I don't believe would affect the template adversely in any way and would make the template more consistent. I would like to see chinesename2 added for an alternative Chinese name and its accompanying c2, t2, s2, p2, and w2 and tags like these below added under the Chinese name section.

pinyin2 for alternative pinyin reading (of the same characters of course)

wg2 for alternate Wade-Giles (again of the same characters)

tradvar for alternate Chinese name in traditional Chinese

charvar for a name in variant characters which exist in both traditional and simplified

McCune–Reischauer

This template currently displays the Korean romanisation method "McCune–Reischauer" (with endash) as "McCune-Reischauer" (with hyphen). Can it be changed to use the preferred endash spelling, in line with WP's article on this subject? I'd do it myself but I can't locate this text in the template code. the order of each languages

At should be aligned as alphabetical order for fair treat. thus, the order is Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, (Vietnamese) I've changed the order anyway. --Carl Daniels (talk) 11:28, 14 February 2014 (UTC)
