Wii System Updates merge

[edit]

The System Updates alone can't be an article, Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. A list of releases can be included in the article about the software itself, but not as a self article. -- ReyBrujo 02:45, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added an intro paragraph to the Wii System Updates page. Also, why can't the system updates just be a separate page? It is essentially just a list. -Zomic13 18:41, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Playstation 3 has it's own firmware updates. This type of page would be too big for a normal article.--MrBubbles 01:29, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

WHy would you want to merge the pages? this was what i was looking for and it is perfect. Why must wiki be a biyatch all the time with these things? Juiceboyjeff

This was also just the perfect information i have been looking for —Preceding unsigned comment added by 58.174.20.126 (talk) 11:38, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PS3 doesn't have firmware. (As a side note.) Meanwhile, this page should just combine the two. Merge. --Son 04:51, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

PS3 doesn't have firmware lol what http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Playstation_3_System_Software It shouldn't combine both. It's too big and shouldn't be compressed.--MrBubbles 12:29, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Did you not read the first line of the article? "PlayStation 3 System Software (プレイステーション3 システム・ソフトウエア, Pureisutēshon Surī Shisutemu Sofutouea?), sometimes referred to incorrectly as firmware, is updateable software and operating system for the PlayStation 3." Secondly, I don't believe the article would be too long. There are some very long articles out there, such as on WWII and List of DirecTV channels. Hence I support merging. It should be one article, not two. --Son 14:16, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OH what the hell. I didn't see what it was going to be merged to. Yeah, I'm for it.--MrBubbles 19:17, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(Merge.) I think that if this page is merged, it should atleast redirect, as both names are very useful in a search for either subject.  Doktor  Wilhelm  23:09, 21 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi everyone. Your attention please. The reason I deleted (NOW MOVED) the comments is because they were irrelevant to the subject at matter. There were also some idiot/s swearing. Now from what I read many of you are mistaking the merge to be into the Wii article. It is not. The merge is because an editor recently created a Wii System Updates page with basically all the info we have on this page, but it contains more and in better detail. This is what we are asking a merge about, not into Wii, but merging this article and Wii System Updates. To be perfectly honest this merge has to happen, its like having two Tom Cruise articles.

My proposal:

  • MERGE
  • Name: 'Wii System Software' (in accordance with other seventh generation console articles, see Xbox 360 System Software and PlayStation 3 System Software.
  • Keep the information supplied by 'Wii System Updates', keep the table, delete this article's. That article has much better information and table layout. Merge intro paragraphs where possible.

Thanks and I hope everyone understands. JTBX 17:00, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

is if fair for you to delete everyone else's views, just because they don't match your own?  Doktor  Wilhelm  17:38, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
oh yeah, and I say MERGE, but someone'll need to take very special care of putting both articles together, also Wii System Updates need to be left to redirect to Wii System Software, as the name of the former will help people looking for this information!  Doktor  Wilhelm  17:48, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You're right Doktor Wilhelm, lets keep it as it is. Enc Company Agent 23:27, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Two articles, exact same subject. Take the best from both articles, put it in the Wii System Software article, and have the other one redirect to Wii System Software. I fail to see the problem. MERGE VDZ 12:42, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
MERGE No need for two articles about the same topic. Neo Samus 21:55, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So, who's going to merge the two articles?

[edit]

I tried, but I don't know where to even start?  Doktor  Wilhelm  16:26, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll do it.→041744 00:06, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article concerns

[edit]

This article (as well as the other system software articles) seem to lean strongly towards: What_Wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_a_directory and Wikipedia:What_Wikipedia_is_not#Wikipedia_is_not_an_indiscriminate_collection_of_information. The content is useful, but listing every little update isn't useful in my view. RobJ1981 (talk) 04:58, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated the table. I don't really see much difference at this point between this article, or the other articles listed under See Also. I'm also concerned that you'd tap this one for deletion, but not the others. --Son (talk) 18:30, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Listing every update included IS useful as it shows the progression of the console. The system and channel updates have now been split so its easier to read through and shows the evolution of the console 80.7.73.24 (talk) 11:58, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

minor/major

[edit]

With 3.2, people keep changing the latest update to minor when it is a Major update. Nintendo release minor updates, they are kept on the SAME VERSION NUMBER. If it is a major update, the version number is increased. This update was from 3.1 (2nd update) to 3.2, therefore it was a MAJOR UPDATE!!

To prove the point, the 2.0 version of the software (in USA) had 3 MINOR updates before 2.2 came out (2.1 being PAL only) You have to realise that just because one thing is noticable doesnt mean its the ONLY update, there are performance updates and such, none of which are mentioned.

Stop changing it incorrectly. Chocobogamer (talk) 21:43, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of the Major/Minor Update Column

[edit]

I removed the Major/Minor Update column because the only updates classified as "major" are those that have a different firmware version. It's redundant. Additionally, if any other update were to be classified as major it would either be a) because lots of new features were added (in which case it would be obvious) or b) because it is someone's opinion that a certain update is more valuable than the rest. -Zomic13 (talk) 03:57, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Update for Smash Bros. Brawl

[edit]

It seems there's been a new update made since the last one, because when I inserted my SSBB disc, it required that I update before I could play. I know for a fact I had the February 25 software because the disc channel showed the "Update Required" image when I inserted the disc. Does anyone have any details about this update? STLocutus (talk) 16:29, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The update is so that your Wii can receve messages from the Smash Service.--Megamanfan3 (talk) 12:34, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I remember something similar with Mario Strikers Charged (PAL), I had the latest update on the console but the game installed a sort of mini update too. I have changed the details on the page to fit Chocobogamer (talk) 00:00, 15 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

IOS37 update now out for PAL region

[edit]

IOS37 is also out for the PAL region, JP region is unknown. However the date the update was put onto the PAL servers is unknown (between 22nd March and today). See http://wiibrew.org/index.php?title=IOS37 . 195.76.6.5 (talk) 11:44, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

About BBC iPlayer 'channel'

[edit]

It's just a website which streams video with Flash, so the only requirement is the normal Internet channel, if you've already downloaded the Internet channel then no update is required. Therefore whoever placed the cross in the download column was right.

However it's debatable if it should be included as a channel at all as it's not a service provided by Nintendo, it's just a website which detects if you have a Wii and adapts the content accordingly. 195.76.6.5 (talk) 09:37, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding of it is that it's just a special website for Wii. If this is the case, then it has nothing to do with the Wii's system software and should be removed. -Zomic13 (talk) 18:02, 10 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ambiguous Comment

[edit]

Under the Wii System Update releases heading is this little blurb:

At a press conference it was announced a future update would be available in the spring.

Which year's Spring is this referring to, and where is the source for this info? ("a press conference" is not a good source!) This might as well be referring to Spring 2007 making it way out of date... STLocutus (talk) 05:33, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A new feature (regarding SD storage) was announced earlier this month. It will be released in a system update expected Spring 2009. However, it shouldn't be mentioned in the article until it is released. -Zomic13 (talk) 05:46, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

October 23rd 2008 System update

[edit]

The "Checks for and removes modified save files." entry is wrong. It states so in Nintendos update message, but in fact there is no new savegame check added. The only save check that is performed by the Wii is the check to remove the twilight hack, that was added with the June 16th 2008 update. This can be verified in the log of the current update: http://wii.marcansoft.com/wiimpersonator/reports/20081023-031234.log As you can see Nintendo didn't even touch the system menu (which would check for hacked saves) but merely patched all and added a few IOS-versions and updatet the shop channel. Furthermore the new twilight hack still works after the update, so you can see it doesn't remove it. ;) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.218.117.155 (talk) 22:02, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

'pov vandal' post

[edit]

this post: (Though it does not actually run it from SD-card, but copies it into NAND-Flash before execution and deletes it afterwards, causing longer loading times and more wear and tear on the Flash) [1][2]

  1. ^ marcan. "System Menu 4.0 Rundown". Hackmii.com. Retrieved 2009-03-26.
  2. ^ http://hackmii.com/2009/02/why-the-wii-will-never-get-any-better/

although it is written negative POV wise, is actually all true, flash memory does degrade over read-write cycles, and its copying to the system does (although only by a few seconds) slow launch times. I'm a Ninty fan before I get accused of pov pushing. Maybe there should be a criticisms or press feedback section about the software updates below the table.? like the early ones that caused graphics card damage. Obviously his source seems to push the negative so its unusable but there are enough sources to put a flash degrading source on, etc chocobogamer mine 16:42, 1 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I being the one who reverted it twice, have no problem with the truth. So describe it not-POV and with a source better than a blog post entitled "Why the Wii will never get any better" and the copying aspect might be worthwhile to go in. Personally I found the post very interesting, but it was clearly not encyclopedic and is unworthy to be used as a reference. Also note that the blogpost was written BEFORE the new software was released and therefore was pure (though correct) speculation violating WP:CRYSTAL.
Of course, the point of this entire section is to point out the changes between the versions. Not really to explain or (in this instance from our German dial-in user, complain) about how things were accomplished, so keep that in mind. The article could benefit with a paragraph or four giving a detailed and sourced overview of what the system software does and how everything interacts, but that doesn't exist -- and I am not qualified to write it.
Now to think about what to do about the unexplained IOS## stuff that was probably the reason the jargon tag put on top -- I'm leaning towards that it should all just go away with a link to the HomeBrew wiki page.-- KelleyCook (talk)
the IOS stuff is totally irrelevant as it has nothing to do with the user end of the UI. Nobody looking for details on the updates will care wat IOS# it is as it doesnt explain the update. as for the stuff I suggested, I do think its relevant to the Wii, but maybe not this article. If we get an article by Edge or something pointing it out then maybe we can put it on there. I would point out though any flash article will have one link to memory loss, its a fact-of-life with it :/ chocobogamer mine 01:10, 2 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The the post "Why the Wii will never get any better" was only linked as a source in the first version of the paragraph, before it was rolled back a few times and it was only there to explain it a little better, since marcan didn't bother in his "system menu 4.0 rundown" with a lengthy explanation, since he had allready done so. After the rollbacks that particular article was never again used. So maybe somebody should check the sources next time. Furthermore you won't get any better information about the Wii than from hackmii.com. It's the site from team twiizers, the guys who hacked the Wii from front to back and created their own channel etc. If there should ever be incorrect information on hackmii you can be sure someone of the team will correct it and if not some hacker will say so in the comments. I always thought wikipedia was a source for knowledge and not "knowledge some corporation wants you to belive". Anyway I now includet a source from nintendo.com (ofcourse they don't use the term NAND-Flash, but internal memory, but it means the same thing. That will have to do as Nintendo will never say publically that they didn't really implement reading from SD-card but rather automated things that were there already) and a source that says that Flash-memory only has a set number of write-cycles before it dies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.218.112.194 (talk) 18:28, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mario Kart and Wii Fit channels

[edit]

Technically, these channels are not downloaded, but actually installed by the host games (which makes sense, as accessing anything beyond what's in the channel requires the disc of the game in question). Wii System Menu version 4.3U?

[edit]

Metroid: Other M required me to install a new Wii System Menu the other day, less than a week after I'd checked for new updates and found none.

I know the version number because it shows up on the Wii System Settings panel.

Does anyone know what's new in 4.3U? --Powerlord (talk) 23:26, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Googling a bit, I guess this just means the US version, although it's unclear why it tried to install the same firmware version that was already on the system. --Powerlord (talk) 23:29, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Read the section on the article about IOSes. This is just an additional IOS, previously not available from the update servers, but only available on the game's disc (though it might now have been added to the server, I can't remember). It was originally a Korean IOS, used by pirates (mostly) due to bugs in it, so this will effectively stop that from being used, if/when it is released on the update server. It will not affect any of the rest of the system. This has happened before (Animal Crossing: City Folk was an example, including IOS38 with WiiSpeak support) and will most likely happen again. 80.42.232.23 (talk) 17:00, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

About that update history

[edit]

If there is a compelling and encyclopedic need to include details about past versions of the system software, could we limit it to important and/or noteworthy details? Wikipedia is not the place for complete version histories (but anyone can feel free to start your own wiki for that purpose!). —67.14.236.50 (talk) 04:07, 4 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Since there’s some resistance to simply blanking the section for the time being, can I just request that we remove all entries which do not cite (and use) secondary sources? I may do so myself if no one else does. —67.14.236.50 (talk) 06:48, 10 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No justification has been given for keeping the section since I first posted here, and it’s chock full of copyright violations of questionable encyclopedic value, so I’ve removed it again. If there’s any reason to keep it, please join in the discussion here. Thanks. —67.14.236.50 (talk) 23:39, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I wound up just deleting the descriptions of the updates, and cutting the details of the channel updates. But what I want to know now is:

  • Is there a need for the second table of channel information?
  • Is there a need for the minor version updates to be included in the first table?
  • What’s with the multiple release dates for the same version number in the same regions?

Hoping to hear back from someone about these questions, or else I’ll assume it can all be safely deleted. Thanks. —67.14.236.50 (talk) 04:37, 27 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

All right then, I’ll cut it down to one table of major releases. —67.14.236.50 (talk) 03:18, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Restored the page

[edit]

This page was blanked out in favor of a redirect to the Wii#Hardware section. There was no discussion about a merge or delete here on the talk page. Pages exist for Xbox 360 system software and PS3 system software, so why would a page for the Wii system software not make sense?

I don't even completely agree about removing the intermediate updates which added and removed significant features. However, that was the result of a talk discussion. Blanking the page for a possible future summarization within another article, when articles of this sort have been determined to be notable and acceptable Wikipedia content, is silly without a prior talk discussion. Jbbdude (talk) 00:17, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Also, after reading the conversation at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Xbox One system software, it became clear that User:Czar is personally opposed to game system OS articles. I don't happen to agree with Czar that phones and browsers have famous software but game systems don't, however the discussion there came to no consensus. AND, as was pointed out there multiple times, individual articles should have been nominated for deletion. Instead, it seems that months after that discussion, Czar chose to simply redirect this article without a new discussion or merge/AfD/redirect discussion. Jbbdude (talk) 00:23, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like someone's got an axe to grind. Thanks for the ping, but no thanks for the mischaracterization. The linked deletion discussion has a very clear consensus for redirecting the "articles" that consisted of unsourced and trivial lists. Please provide sources or remove the unsourced info. czar 01:05, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No axes here. Apologies if it seems a bit harsh; wasn't my intent. The discussion did come to a conclusion of "no consensus," not any clear consensus to redirect. In fact, it was explicitly discussed that a redirect would warrant a future nomination and discussion. I was surprised that that didn't happen. I understand the concerns you have, but since that discussion much of the changelog elements were removed. Since your comment, a lot of work has already been done on the article on content and sourcing. It looks like at least some of your concerns are being addressed. Proposed merge of Wii Menu into Wii system software

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Per WP:INDISCRIMINATE, I don't think the information included in the Wii Menu article is notable enough to warrant its own article, especially considering that most of it consists of descriptions for "channels" (software applications) that would certainly fail WP:GNG. In fact, I think most of the subjects covered in the article are WP:EXCESS in detail and could easily be simplified and merged into the Wii system software article; by contrast, the current highest-ranked article about video game console system software (Xbox system software at B-Class, at least the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S software section) passively mentions such applications.
