Oppose(Change of Name) and Support(International Status)- It is given International status but not yet renamed as per Union Civil Aviation Ministry. And thus name can be Vijayawada International Airport.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Agasthyathepirate (talkcontribs) 16:09, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the move request was: page moved. No opposition and this was listed as an acceptable alternate title by a commenter at the previosu RM. The other opposition there was to the length of the name, which would not apply here. (non-admin closure) TonyBallioni (talk) 15:19, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Vijayawada AirportVijayawada International Airport – Following a query by Vin09 on my talk page, I am reopening the above discussion, but with just the addition of "International", to see if there's consensus for that. I didn't see enough evidence that the WP:COMMONNAME has changed in the discussion above to make that determination. Note that I neither support nor oppose this request, I'm simply opening it to get clarity on this question.  — Amakuru (talk) 07:32, 24 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@TonyBallioni: The move itself is irrational and neither do any of the sources cite that the name of the airport has been changed rather than merely stating that it has been granted international status. International status does not automatically imply that there is a name change.  LeoFrank  Talk 13:10, 25 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

International status

[edit]

I'm looking at this page following a request made today&oldid= by LeoFrank. I'm not wild about granting the request without there at least being some explanation on the talk page as to why it has been move protected. (Admins are generally not directly familiar with the areas where requests end up on noticeboards like RfPP, so it can often take a bit of unpicking to find out what's going on.

Back on 24 May 2017, a requested move was made on the talk page by Amakuru. The RM was closed on 7 June 2017 by TonyBallioni. On 25 December, LeoFrank moved the page, with the following edit summary:

The mere fact that the airport has been granted international status does not imply that the name of the airport has been changed

LeoFrank also left a message on the talk page saying the move is "irrational". Since then, any change to the page suggesting it is an international airport has been reverted, mostly by LeoFrank, mostly without explanation.

The RM contained links to at least four sources noting that it has been granted international status. Upon seeing this, I found it rather strange that the article refers to it as a domestic airport when we have sources that say it is an international airport. The mention of it being a "domestic" airport then has a footnote, to a source that says it is an international airport. What?, I thought.

I had a look at the departures and arrivals board on the Vijayawada Airport website and I'm not seeing any flights outside India, so I guess that is a fairly clear demonstration that despite the international status, it is still a domestic airport. It'd be helpful if when there are numerous editors reverting, experienced editors put a brief notice like this on the talk page explaining why the page is titled like this, especially if a Requested Move happened fairly recently and was closed by an admin. It wasn't obvious to me why the consensus of the RM had been overriden and took me a fair bit of digging through diffs and a brief web search to understand why. If it isn't fairly obvious to an admin why the page has a particular content and title, it probably won't be obvious to an unregistered/newbie editor. Noting that kind of thing on the talk page is exactly what a talk page is for.

I'd suggest to LeoFrank that reverts in the future really ought to contain an explanation as to why—feel free to point to the talk page to explain why. —Tom Morris (talk) 17:08, 31 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, given the recent move request and formal close to that name, it shouldn't have been moved without discussion, so I've moved it back to the agreed title. Subsequent moves should go through a request at WP:RM. The name with "international" is supported by recent sources anyway,[1][2] so I certainly don't think it's uncontroversial to remove "International" from the name. Thanks for spotting this, Tom Morris.  — Amakuru (talk) 21:06, 31 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well, well, we are back at it again! While Tony made an irrational move, we do it again now. Newspapers do not use the official name of the airport. For eg, Bangalore's Kempegowda International Airport is referred to as Bangalore International Airport. Why don't you move that article as well then? Also, do the articles state that the name of the airport has changed rather than merely calling it Vijaywada International Airport unanimously themselves?
The article was moved back without discussion to Vijaywada Airport since the the previous RM conclusion was not right and did not take into consideration whether there is an actual renaming of the airport done. See here. Choose location code, enter VGA, you still get Vijaywada as the name. I'm moving it back to the correct title.  LeoFrank  Talk 03:14, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Source here for Bangalore's airport being called wrong. [3]. Most news sources do not even know the difference between Bangalore International Airport Limited (the holding company) to Kempegowda International Aiport. They think that KIA is BIAL. How can such sources even be considered? Even AAI's website still calls this Vijaywada Airport [4].  LeoFrank  Talk 03:30, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@LeoFrank: it doesn't matter. Once the name has been established by a requested move discussion, and your move back to the old title was questioned, you should then list it for a new discussion instead of repeatedly moving the page back to the old title. Also, your point about official names is not necessarily conclusive, as it is the WP:COMMONNAME which is important on Wikipedia, not the WP:OFFICIALNAME. I suggest that you start a discussion at WP:RM if you think "International" should be removed again. Thanks  — Amakuru (talk) 16:45, 1 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Amakuru: OK. I'll probably take this discussion to the project page to reach a consensus on the naming. In general, Indian airports have the issue with their names and it is presumed that if an airport has been granted "international" status, the word international automatically should get added to the title of the airport, which is not the case. FYI, if we go per WP:COMMONNAME, then the 'a' in the word airport, should be lowercase in the title. There was a discussion on this either at WT:AVIATION or WT:AIRPORT (I'll try finding the link of the discussion). Citing that, given the current title isn't official, it should rather be Vijaywada International airport.  LeoFrank  Talk 11:14, 7 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Vijayawada International AirportVijayawada Airport – This airport has been granted international status, but that does not automatically imply that word "International" gets added to the name. With respect to names of airports, newspaper articles are not reliable as they keep referring to airports with different names (eg: Bangalore's Kempegowda International Airport is referred as Bangalore Airport, Bangalore International Airport, Bengaluru Airport, Bangaluru International Airport Kempegowda Airport, or Kempegowda International Airport while the latter is the official name). Also, per this discussion, if an airport article is named other than the official, the 'a' in airport, has to be lower case. The previous discussion which was closed as move, did not take into account if the airport has been officially renamed. The official website of IATA (search with Location code = VGA), lists the airport as Vijaywada Airport  LeoFrank  Talk 14:42, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

LeoFrank Repatriation flights will land only in International Airports not in domestic airports if you see Kolkata Airport doesn't have London operation but now Air India is operating through VBM and that destination is included in that page Ktdk (talk) 13:25, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sources:
As to whether it makes more sense to describe it as an International airport or Customs airport in the lede is another matter. I'd lean toward the former. Even if it's not currently operating the Singapore flight, that doesn't change it's designation as being officially licensed/approved/staffed to handle international passengers and customs; a lot of air services are currently under temporary suspension.OhNoitsJamie Talk 13:24, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Vijayawada AirportVijayawada International Airport – The official website of AAI mentions airports official name to be Vijayawada International Airport, and search with Location code = VGA on official website of Indigo also lists the airport as Vijayawada International Airport. The official website of IATA doesn't seem to be a reliable source as mentioned by @LeoFrank (search with Location code = HYD), lists the airport as Metropolitan Area. The Flightradar24 shouldn't be considered as a source (as per discussion between @Fylindfotberserk and @LeoFrank (talk)) as it lists LKO / VILK as Lucknow Chaudhary Charan Singh Airport rather than it's official name Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (AAI, CCSIA Lucknow). As of posting this topic, bi-weekly flights to Sharjah are being operated by Air India Xpress (IX 975/976), which are scheduled passenger flights rather than repatriation flights. —SMorphius (talk) 00:38, 24 September 2023 (UTC) — Relisting. – robertsky (talk) 15:49, 4 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment - The official website of AAI also mentions "Vijayawada Airport". Better to check for hits in Google News. From a preliminary search, I get 300 hits each for "Vijayawada Airport" (search results) and "Vijayawada International Airport" (search results) in quotes. Maybe it is not the time to change it? - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 09:18, 24 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Fylindfotberserk I went through the search results posted for "Vijayawada Airport", "Vijayawada International Airport" and went through the news articles dating back to 2015. There seems to be an issue of consensus regarding the official name. It took me some time to get in contact with an official who can shed some light on this. According to them the airport acquired the international status in 2017 but the title change of the airport hasn't been authorised at that time as there was a proposal to rename the airport's title as Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao International Airport by previous AP State Government. For this reason it was decided to continue the title as Vijayawada Airport until the resolution was passed. 2 years later this renaming proposal was rejected due to which the airport's official title continued to be Vijayawada Airport until early 2020 after which it was officially renamed as Vijayawada International Airport by AAI which is current displayed in airport's description on the official website of AAI. Due to the COVID, the official plaque at the airport remained as Vijayawada Airport which was supposed to be changed but in turn didn't take place. They informed of the possible plaque change at airport to Vijayawada International Airport after the opening of the new terminal building which might happen at later time. At the moment only official documentation/source seems to the official website of AAI and tender documents for Snacks Bar, MEC as I'm not able to find the proper sources or citations for the rest of the information. —SMorphius (talk) 13:20, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@SMorphius: Thanks for the chronology. So I took a 3 year slab starting from 29 Sep 2020 this day. I got 175 hits for "Vijayawada Airport" in quotes in Google News, while 90 hits for "Vijayawada International Airport". Hence, still have to wait till "Vijayawada International Airport" becomes the most common phrase. Ergo Opposing for now. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:52, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Fylindfotberserk I have read through all the articles from the 175 hits for "Vijayawada Airport". Out of the 176 results from 18 pages, I found out that 78 articles used the term Vijayawada International Airport in either content, 14 articles are unrelated and doesn't mention airport at all, 10 articles used term Vijayawada Airport along side generalised titles of other airports such as Delhi Airport, Bengaluru Airport, Hyderabad Airport etc. and 74 articles used the term Vijayawada Airport (many of these have a single mention of the airports title as they are articles related to travel, politics, blogs etc). During the time frame of 29 Sep 2020 to 29 Sep 2023 Vijayawada International Airport seems to be one of the common terms used to mention this airport and considering that the official website of AAI and tender documents for Snacks Bar & MEC also use the term Vijayawada International Airport , I think we can move the article from Vijayawada Airport to Vijayawada International Airport.SMorphius (talk) 19:49, 28 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Move as said by @Thewikizoomer Jayanthkumar123 (talk) 06:52, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose per rationale in the last move request, which isn't even a year back. The current name is used often as can be seen by a simple Google News search - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 12:42, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In the last request, it was observed that the AAI website is displaying the name as Vijayawada airport, however, that's not the case now - https://www.aai.aero/en/airports/vijayawada Thewikizoomer (talk) 13:50, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The AAI source still uses both names. Also Google searches use "Vijayawada Airport" often. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 14:42, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The source displayed me this ''Vijayawada International Airport (IATA: VGA, ICAO: VOBZ) is a public international airport serving Andhra Pradesh Capital Region. The airport is located at Gannavaram 25 KM from Vijayawada, where National Highway 16 connecting Chennai to Kolkata pass through.'' Thewikizoomer (talk) 14:54, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but a bit below you can see Vijayawada Airport alongwith Useful Links and Contact Us. Also Google hits. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 14:56, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose per Fylindfotberserk. It would be useful to stop having perennial RMs on this same question.  — Amakuru (talk) 15:02, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

if this is the official name of the airport according to the airport authority and local governing bodies, it should be the name of the Wikipedia article, unless a preponderance of secondary sources call it something else, which doesn't seem to be the case. Quick search of the Googles suggests that "Vijayawada International Airport" and "Vijayawada Airport" are used with roughly equal frequency. Also, it's commonplace for locals to drop "International" from an airport name when there's no nearby rival airport for it to be confused with. makes more sense.Thewikizoomer (talk) 16:55, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The official source suggests the airport's name as Vijayawada International Airport and Vijayawada airport here.

It is generally known as Vijayawada International Airport too.

If the argument is to let the name stay as Vijayawada Airport, then Rajiv Gandhi International Airport may be also named as Hyderabad International Airport, as it is referred like that. Same goes with Delhi International Airport which officially is Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Inviting comments on this matter. --Thewikizoomer (talk) 13:00, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
