References
[edit]Just wondering, are references even necessary for this page? I'm worried it would clog it up. The source for all numbers given are right at the top of the pages for the cities listed. Alex of Canada (talk) 18:02, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
Page issue
[edit]The content on this page is heavily skewed/biased towards the Western United States, there's plenty of towns in NC and other places in the east with an elevation over 3,000. I attempted to add them myself but Wikipedia refused to save it and I lost my progress. If anyone could add more info on eastern US towns that would be nice — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lfax-nimbus (talk • contribs) 02:40, 10 August 2020 (UTC)
Ruidoso, NM
[edit]What about Ruidoso, NM, which is almost at 7,000 feet? Alto, NM? Capitan, NM? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.18.160.106 (talk) 14:48, 29 November 2020 (UTC)
Changing height requirement
[edit]The requirement for a town to be 7,000 or higher excludes a LOT of towns that are known for their elevation, and further makes the list biased towards the Rockies, as pointed out two and a half years ago by another user. The 7,000 feet requirement gives a really bad picture of what towns in the US are considered high - I have attempted to remedy this by making a small list of communities outside of the Rocky Mountain states, but more work may be needed. This username should not be capitalized (talk) 02:45, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
Cities or settlements
[edit]The article says list of cities but these are mostly small towns. A bit misleading. 2601:602:8080:7590:991F:15B4:CA9A:C734 (talk) 10:36, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
Requested move 17 September 2023
[edit]- The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
The result of the move request was: no consensus per WP:NOGOODOPTIONS. Many titles proposed, no consensus for any of them. I invite the nominator to pick one title and make a new move request for it. (closed by non-admin page mover) — MaterialWorks 17:47, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
List of cities in the United States by elevation → List of towns in the United States by elevation – Most of these high elevation places are towns and villages rather than cities. No big deal, though. Thanks for this list, Buaidh talk e-mail 20:06, 17 September 2023 (UTC) — Relisting. – robertsky (talk) 15:57, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
- Move to alternative, likely List of highest towns in the United States. The "highest" qualifier should be in there, as it is not a list of all towns by elevation, just the highest ones. Not sure if there is another term that would be more inclusive to the entries on the list, like "populated place" or "municipality". Mdewman6 (talk) 22:22, 17 September 2023 (UTC)
I agree. List of highest towns in the United States is much better. Thanks, Buaidh talk e-mail 03:23, 18 September 2023 (UTC)- There are still some cities listed here, including Leadville, Colorado, Victor, Colorado, and Cripple Creek, Colorado. So if we applied Mdewman6's criterion that the 'highest' qualifier should be in there, then "cities" instead of "towns" should still be in the title. Zzyzx11 (talk) 03:45, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- Would List of highest cities and towns in the United States work? List of highest municipalities in the United States? Though the latter may not quite be accurate either. Mdewman6 (talk) 15:54, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

- Move to List of highest populated places in the United States, which would be more consistent with the master Lists of populated places in the United States. Zzyzx11 (talk) 03:45, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
- The Geographic Names Information System uses the term "populated place" to refer to any place that currently or previously had residents, regardless of its current status. If we use that criteria, this list would be almost completely full of ghost towns. I limited the first table to only places that were counted in the 2020 United States Census. Please see below. Yours aye, Buaidh talk e-mail 06:33, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
- List of highest populated places in the United States can be confused with "List of most populous places in the United States."
We could use List of highest elevation populated places in the United States, but that a mouthfull.Yours aye, Buaidh talk e-mail 06:51, 20 September 2023 (UTC)- Then I see WP:NOGOODOPTIONS, when you include existing cities, towns, villages, and census-designated places here. Move: After this discussion, I would like to move this list to the List of highest elevation towns in United States. I would also like to move the second list to the List of highest elevation towns in eastern United States. Does anyone object? @Mdewman6 and Zzyzx11: Buaidh talk e-mail 12:51, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
- It's confusing to vote in an RM you proposed, especially since you already supported (and haven't struck) List of highest towns in the United States above. Not sure how I feel about "highest elevation". It doesn't seem to be used, while we do have List of highest towns by country not List of highest elevation towns by country. It may fail WP:CONCISE. That said, I haven't received any comments about my possible alternatives above. Right now, any potential closer would need to invoke WP:NOGOODOPTIONS. As for the second part, you're talking about a WP:SPLIT- one thing at a time. Let's figure out the title first, and a separate discussion can consider spinning out the second table to its own page. Mdewman6 (talk) 17:40, 23 September 2023 (UTC)
I'm withdrawing my suggestion and supporting the List of highest towns in the United States. We can deal with a split sometime in the future. @Mdewman6 and Zzyzx11: Yours aye, Buaidh talk e-mail 22:14, 23 September 2023 (UTC)

- Neutral comment Would List of highest elevated communities in the United States be a good target to encompass the multiple municipality types, or is that not a standard article title type? Nate • (chatter) 22:39, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
- @MrSchimpf: The word "elevated" implies the communities are above something, which they are not. "Communities" is a better term than "cities", "towns", "villages", "settlements", or "populated places", but if I change my title preference one more time I may get shot. List of highest communities in the United States is our best choice. I apologize for my caprice, Buaidh talk e-mail 23:31, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
Limit to municipalities and CDPs
[edit]While the first table includes only places with 2020 United States Census population data, the second table includes places not included in the census with only population estimates. I think both tables should be limited to places with census data. Perhaps the second table should be moved to its own list article. Yours aye, Buaidh talk e-mail 20:14, 17 September 2023 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: moved. There's a rough consensus here that the proposed title is better than the current one. (closed by non-admin page mover) Elli (talk | contribs) 21:40, 17 October 2023 (UTC)
List of cities in the United States by elevation → List of highest communities in the United States – Following up after the no consensus result of the previous RM, I think there was rough consensus that the current title is worse than at least some of the options mentioned in the RM. Given that the closer did not fully invoke WP:NOGOODOPTIONS and actually choose something that is an improvement over the status quo, let's try again. Now that Buaidh has added designations, perhaps "communities" is the most accurate descriptor for the inclusion criteria as the list is currently constructed. Open to alternatives, but let's try to reach consensus on something. Mdewman6 (talk) 21:49, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
- Move to List of highest municipalities in the United States Rreagan007 (talk) 19:42, 9 October 2023 (UTC)
- I think the issue with "municipalities" is that the list includes census designated places, which are not municipalities. Mdewman6 (talk) 03:24, 10 October 2023 (UTC)::
- The majority of places on this list are not municipalities. We can call these places either communities or towns. Yours aye, Buaidh talk e-mail 12:36, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
