Addressing "copy and paste", previous deletion of page, and notability
To address a possible issue, this article should not be disallowed admission to mainspace due to its appearance as somewhat of a "copy and paste" article (details listed here: Wikipedia:Moving_a_page#Fixing_cut_and_paste_moves). It is not meant to simply be a name change, but yet a different version of an already existing draft, Draft:Jin (singer) (I would not mind if it is deleted). Although, I do believe that the name change is somewhat necessary, as part of the subjects relativity (...I've given up on my first desire). Edits to this article specifically, information addition/referencing, is mine. It started in my sandbox (seen here: User:IdkSam/sandbox/jin, and the first edits of Draft: Jin (singer), if you would like to see. Basically, it is not only a name change, but a slightly different version of that draft curated by me. It was complicatedly rejected, so this is a different shot I edited with similar but different/added information, and additional changes addressing concerns of previous reviews. Please consider this article as what it is. It is slightly modeled after already-accepted article V (singer), for reference.
To address problems with previous deletion of the page, it was simply deleted due to its tag as an abandoned draft, (Wikipedia:WikiProject_Abandoned_Drafts) it is not a concern and I am aiming to being an improved article of this subject nonetheless. I have reviewed the discussions of his notability and deletion, but I believe I can resubmit my version, which applies to the rules, as this has new information and research... https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Talk:Kim_Seok-Jin#Requested_move_10_February_2018
Finally... Notability concerns I have found, from Wikipedia:Notability (music) and Wikipedia:Notability:
"Has been the subject of multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable, not self-published, and are independent of the musician or ensemble itself."
This has happened countless times, although, both as recognizing his covers AND countless articles (many Korean, yet some English) that describe HIM as an artist and member specifically.
"Significant coverage" addresses the topic directly and in detail, so that no original research is needed to extract the content. Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention, but it does not need to be the main topic of the source material."
This excuses articles that speak details about Jin separately, whilst also considering that the article still talks about others. (ex. an article about BTS that has a section about Jin.)
"Note that members of notable bands are redirected to the band's article, not given individual articles, unless they have demonstrated individual notability for activity independent of the band, such as solo releases."
Jin has had lead artist solo releases, both charting relatively high!
"For example, material about individual members of a musical group are normally merged into larger articles about the group. Songs may be described in a discography or one of the many lists of songs."
Grammy and Billboard (very reputable sources!) have written independent articles specifically highlighting his own cover. It is NOT a cover produced by BTS (band), but Kim Seok-jin. ("In Front of the Post Office in Autumn" // Merrill, Philip (June 8, 2018). "BTS' Jin Covers Korean Rock Ballad, Debut Track Of Yoon Do-hyun". grammy.com. Retrieved July 6, 2018. // Herman, Tamar (June 7, 2018). "BTS' Jin Releases Cover of 'In Front of the Post Office in Autumn': Listen". billboard.com. Retrieved July 6, 2018.)
"1. Has credit for writing or co-writing either lyrics or music for a notable composition. 3. Has had a work used as the basis for a later composition by a songwriter, composer or lyricist who meets the above criteria."
Jin has written and particpated in writing Korean BTS songs that are notable as songs by that group. Also, there have been instances where a notable person has used his work or taken his work as a basis for a full composition, like RM (rapper). Jin has written parts of songs produced by someone notabale (RM, if he counts. I'm not sure, but only if that is what number 3 means.) https://www.komca.or.kr/foreign2/eng/S01.jsp, search "10005243" for songwriting credits.
"Additionally, Wikipedia:Notability, General notability guideline: • "Sources" should be secondary sources, as those provide the most objective evidence of notability. There is no fixed number of sources required since sources vary in quality and depth of coverage, but multiple sources are generally expected. Sources do not have to be available online or written in English."
I have several sources in Korean that are allowed, so it is not a concern that I have those as citations.
"Determining notability does not necessarily depend on things such as fame, importance, or popularity—although those may enhance the acceptability of a subject that meets the guidelines explained below."
Members of this group BTS (band) are immensely famous. They have been the most mentioned, top social artists for so long. They have appeared on countless talk shows and interviews, especially as this phenomenon as the "biggest boy band on the planet". Considering that...
I hope this shows some of my ideas. idkSam (talk) 02:12, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

Kim Seok-jin → Jin (male singer) or Jin (singer, born 1992) – He is known for his stage name rather than his actual name. Kanghuitari (talk) 13:27, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose: There are numerous active singers, male and female, in both Korea and Japan who are commonly referred to as "Jin". Honestly the Jin page mentions some, but it needs updating. Thus, the one with his birth year would be needed for the sake of clarity, and by that point his real name is more commonly used. His birth name has his stage name in it, and while all major publications that mention his birth year also mention his real name (examples: [1] [2]) I also found numerous examples that mention his birth name without the birth year (examples: [3] [4] [5] [6]). Honestly, his birth year is sparsely mentioned beyond "meet Jin" profiles written by reliable sources, and even then they always mention his birth name, which makes the idea of his birth year being mentioned in the title less ideal. Thus, his birth name is more commonly referenced than his birth year, so I think due to how common the name "Jin" is we should keep the page title "Kim Seok-jin". DanielleTH (Say hi!) 21:47, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
- Support move to Jin (singer, born 1992) he’s more commonly known by his stage name, his birth year doesn’t need to be in most sources as long as it’s reliably sourced at least once
in the article, that’s simply for disambiguation purposes.Alexanderlee (talk) 22:12, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
- @Alexanderlee: I think you forgot to sign your comment! ^^' My point with the mentioning of the sources was that his birth name is more commonly mentioned in sources that cover him against his birth year, meaning it's more publicly known. Adding his birth year doesn't help with disambiguation purposes because anyone looking for an article on him would be less likely to know his birth year versus is real name, and to show this I used these publications as samples. His stage name is part of his real name so I feel that they convey equal, if not less with the mention of the birth year, amounts of clarity. DanielleTH (Say hi!)

- Oppose per WP:NATURAL"
Using an alternative name that the subject is also commonly called in English reliable sources, albeit not as commonly as the preferred-but-ambiguous title.
Year of birth is a terrible disambiguator and should only be used as the last resort. He seems to be reasonably well-known under his born name. No such user (talk) 08:26, 22 October 2018 (UTC)

[1] Popularly known as the Worldwide handsome and it is Scientifically proven as On February 16, 2018 a famous foreign plastic surgeon examined and analyzed 269 different Asian faces. While doing so, Jin's face caught the attention of the surgeon as the BTS member possessed the "golden ratio" of 1:1.618. The ratio requires the space between the two ears to come out to 1 while the distance from one's hairline to the chin must result in a 1.618 measurement. Another aspect it focuses on is the proportion of one's lips and the chin must be 1 whilst the measurement between the lips to the mid-eyes line should exactly be 1.168. - I still think all of this is fancruft. No one cares that someone thinks seokjin has a "golden ratio" for his face except fans. Just post it on a fan board or twitter. This is wikipedia. I myself am a fan of BTS and sometimes that line gets blurry so when I am unsure I put a note that I am so future editors can decide if it's notable enough to keep on the page. In this situation numerous people have stated this material isn't noteworthy. As for the consensus on not to add visual rankings that was a decision decided by the k-pop community as a whole. If you want visual rankings to be added again you'd have to bring it up again among the whole community. But realize though not every ranking should be added. How much coverage a piece gets among other things is what makes a ranking notable. Ukiss2ne14lyfe (talk) 05:06, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
- I'm going to have to agree with Ukiss2ne14lyfe here. I don't see how this anything other than fancruft. The point of Wikipedia is to summarize key points relevant to the subject. In this case, it is to summarize Kim's career as a singer and public figure. Just because information is provided by reliable sources does not mean it is relevant. If you believe his physical appearance is central to his career beyond what is already included (him being scouted by his agency for it) I fully invite you to explain it, Shin hi. The only reason I could see including it is a mention of his idol persona in an Artistry section. This, however, wouldn't mention various random awards he won for his face, but moreso his stage personality, similar to the Marilyn Monroe article's "Screen persona and reception" section. DanielleTH (Say hi!) 06:00, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
- I am trying to tidy up the page (and if anyone knows how to get the "sources" to say with the sections and not sink to the bottom have at it). The information is total cruft however and has no place here. Britmax (talk) 18:49, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Britmax: If you meant to get the sources to stay with the talk page sections, I've done that. And it seems consensus is pretty clear not to add this fancruft. I'm not convinced the sourcing is sufficient to add anything. But if people are saying no beauty/physical appearance rankings are ever justified I'm not sure I'd agree this is supported by normal practice. Emma Stone as FA currently says
It said something similar when it was promoted. [8] Jennifer Lawrence another FA saysIn 2009, she featured in AskMen's Top 99 Women, FHM's 100 Sexiest Women in the World, and Maxim magazine's Hot 100;[129][164] the latter also placed her on the list on three other occasions—2010, 2011, and 2014.[165] She continued to be featured in AskMen's annual beauty lists from 2010 to 2015, ranking among the top forty each year.[166] In 2011, she appeared in Victoria's Secret's list of What is Sexy? as the Sexiest Actress.[167] She was mentioned in several other media outlet lists that year, including People magazine's 100 Most Beautiful Women, each of FHM's and FHM Australia's 100 Sexiest Women in the World, and Men's Health magazine's 100 Hottest Women.[168] She ranked sixth on Empire's list of the 100 Sexiest Movie Stars in 2013.[169] <snipped> In 2017, Buzznet named her one of the world's most beautiful women.[172]
Again similar when promoted [9] Perhaps this is more important for actors as they are regularly appearing on screen, but it's hard to argue it isn't also important for musical artists sometimes. After all, that tends to be seen as a key defining feature of boy bands. But anyway, let's see Taylor SwiftLawrence appeared in Victoria's Secret's listing of the "Sexiest Up-and-Coming Bombshell" in 2011,[149] People's Most Beautiful People in 2011 and 2013,[150] Maxim's Hot 100 from 2011 to 2014,[151] and topped FHM's sexiest women in the world list in 2014.[152]
Again similar when promoted [10] Another one Katy PerryShe refuses to take part in overly sexualized photo-shoots,[277] although Bloomberg L.P. views her as a sex symbol.[278] <snipped> and ranked first in Maxim's Hot 100 list.[282]
And yeah similar when promoted [11] There are obvious sexism problems if we say this sort of stuff is sometimes acceptable for females but never males. And of course that isn't how things are handled anyway. Shah Rukh KhanPerry is considered a sex symbol; GQ labelled her a "full-on male fantasy",[9] while Elle described her body "as though sketched by a teenage boy".[21] Vice described her as a "'serious' popstar/woman/sex symbol".[259] She was placed at number one on the Maxim Hot 100 in 2010 as the "most beautiful woman in the world", with editor Joe Levy describing her as a "triple – no quadruple – kind of hot".[260] Men's Health readers voted her the "sexiest woman of 2013".[261]
Even if this one was the rarity when it wasn't when promoted I think it would still be relevant but of course it was [12]. I gave more examples here although many of them aren't FA [13] (but I think Bradley Cooper is, and not given there but one I noticed is Brad Pitt). He has regularly featured among the top ten on The Times of India's list of the 50 most desirable men in India,[256][257] and in a 2007 poll by the magazine Eastern Eye he was named the sexiest man in Asia.
To be clear, I'm not saying this means we must mention the above in this article, as said the sourcing looks too poor. And I'm aware of WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. The point remains I find it hard to justify any suggestion this sort of content never belongs no matter the sourcing since no one cares or only fans care or whatever, or it's completely subjective. Subjective but well sourced rankings and opinions of someone's physical attractiveness are a common part of articles including our best work, so seem to be something the community has accepted.
I don't think Marilyn Monroe is the best example because she passed before this sort of thing was so common, which doesn't apply here. Also, the lengthy time since her passing means retrospectives that can be used to put things in perspective. (That article does still mention sex symbol or similar words a lot of times.)
Nil Einne (talk) 19:50, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
- BTW, I missed something above. If some WP:Consensus was reached to always exclude such rankings from K-pop stars, that may be sufficient justification subject to the limits of WP:Local consensus. Such a consensus should be linked though, especially since I can't find it mentioned in any WP:MOS Nil Einne (talk) 19:55, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
- Nil Einne I've always excluded such rankings because of the consensus. I've always thought some of them should be added since they've received a lot of coverage, such as the Chandler list, but abstained because I've always been told not to add it. Although I do still believe the above request is trivial and fancruft I think other official rankings should be able to mentioned since other pages outside of the k-pop community does it. I think back then they came to the consensus because there wasn't a lot of coverage for the rankings but now there is a lot more. I'm not certain, it was decided before I became an active editor on here.Ukiss2ne14lyfe (talk) 21:27, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
Net Worth Source
Is this source really considered reliable: '"BTS Net Worth". The Wealth Record. January 6, 2019. Retrieved January 17, 2019.'? The article itself appears to be very poor quality, with spelling and grammatical errors, personal opinions and vague facts. There is no mention of their sources of information to determine net worth. This appears to be a rumoured net worth and I believe that it should be removed. VarietyofBlack (talk) 00:20, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
- Agreed - this is pure puff and tabloid-y Evaders99 (talk) 02:58, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
- @VarietyofBlack: Pinging Ukiss2ne14lyfe as she added the net worth. It's worth noting that net worth does appear quite frequently on articles, including GAs like Beyoncé, though that does have a more reputable source, Forbes. I know nothing of the Wealth Record. As an additional note, what are these personal opinions, vague facts, and grammatical errors? The article talks about music he's released as well as descriptions provided by critics. The only thing I could consider vague is the Gallup Korea note, which could be explained further. DanielleTH (Say hi!) 04:24, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
- Went through and clarified what I could and fixed any grammar mistakes I noticed (there weren't that many). Not going to touch Net Worth just yet. DanielleTH (Say hi!) 04:59, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
- It doesn't matter if it's taken off to me. I only added it after I saw other pages had it. I added the same thing to the individual EXO member pages too so I'd have to pull it off from there also. Ukiss2ne14lyfe (talk) 16:40, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

"Change Kim to Jin". Kim is his surname and not how he is normally addressed, whereas Jin is his stage name and what he is known as. JR9241 (talk) 03:02, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
- Not done - Wikipedia is a use formal encyclopedic syntax - WP:SURNAME is the guideline for this. Evaders99 (talk) 05:30, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
- But the policy states: "People who are best known by a pseudonym should be subsequently referred to by their pseudonymous surnames, unless they do not include a recognizable surname in the pseudonym, in which case the whole pseudonym is used. For people well known by one-word names, nicknames, or pseudonyms, but who often also use their legal names professionally [which is not Jin's case, though] – use the legal surname. If they use their mononym or pseudonym exclusively, then use that name." --Chiya92 14:45, 2 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Chiyako92: That's in relation to page titles, that's why it's under the header "subsequent use". If the title of the page is the stage name, like V, J-Hope, or RM, use that for the rest of the article. I'm considering doing a move request for this page anyways, to Jin (singer). I wanted to avoid the year disambiguation cause it's bad (see the move discussion) because Jin (singer) redirects to the "Jin" page, but only one other musician is listed, and they're disambigulated as musician. Kim Seok-jin → Jin (singer) – Multiple editors have raised concern with the page title being Kim's real name over his more commonly used stage name "Jin". It was initially kept as "Kim Seok-jin" due to his birth year being added to disambiguate, but that actually isn't necessary. The only other notable singer listed on Jin#People is former J-pop idol Jin Akanishi, who has never been known mononymously as "Jin", like "Britney" for Britney Spears. Kim is also the primary topic for "Jin (singer)" anyways, as his page sees significantly more pageviews—a daily average of 3,480 vs. 127 for Akanishi. DanielleTH (Say hi!) 16:50, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

- Comment: There is also a singer in Lovelyz who uses the mononym Jin, and there is also MC Jin. Partial disambiguation should generally be avoided. —BarrelProof (talk) 20:33, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
- @BarrelProof: MC Jin already has the “MC” as a disambiguation in his name already? And Lovelyz Jin doesn’t have her own article, is it necessary to disambiguation between a singer with an existing article and one without? Alex (talk) 20:49, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
- Regarding disambiguation from MC Jin, the question is not whether MC Jin's article's name is sufficiently distinct, but whether this article's name sufficiently distinguishes this person from him. Regarding the Lovelyz singer, per WP:DAB, disambiguation on Wikipedia should be a matter of topics, not just stand-alone articles. Disambiguation should consider all topics discussed on Wikipedia, regardless of whether something is discussed "as the main topic of an article, or as a subtopic covered by an article in addition to the article's main topic". The article about Lovelyz does not say very much about her, so perhaps she is not especially notable. However, it worries me somewhat to see that there are at least four different topics on Wikipedia that appear to fit the description of "Jin (singer)". Generally, when we put a disambiguation term in parentheses, we would like it to be sufficient to uniquely clarify the topic, and WP:NATURAL disambiguation is preferred. Terms that have only partial disambiguation are generally redirected to a dab page, per WP:INCOMPDAB. —BarrelProof (talk) 20:59, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
- @BarrelProof: thank you for the explanation. Though now it makes me wonder whether it is actually worth changing the article if it means adding a disambiguation. Going by your comments above, perhaps a better solution would be turning Jin (singer) into a redirect to the people section of the Jin article. Alex (talk) 21:21, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
- @BarrelProof: MC Jin is a rapper, not a singer. Those two professions aren't really confused to the point where the "singer" disambiguation would be an issue, in my opinion. In terms of Lovelyz Jin, as you said not much is written about her on the Lovelyz page itself, let alone as her own topic, for there to be substantial confusion. Not sure if this makes a difference, but Kim's page sees a lot more traffic than Lovelyz or Akanishi. I still feel this falls under WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, see also Google trends comparisons, and a Google search of what shows up when you look for "Jin singer". (Here's the encrypted link that prevents personal search bias to check results.) Given the dramatic difference in traffic statistics it appears that most readers are looking for this singer in particular and using a template like {{for}} will clear up the additional issues. DanielleTH (Say hi!) 21:49, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose, changing from my original support vote. If there are multiple entries which would fit Jin (singer) then more disambiguation would be required for the new titlez if the article already has a name which doesn’t require further disambiguation it’s probably best to leave it that way. Alex (talk) 21:21, 19 August 2019 (UTC)
- Comment: As for me, I support per DanielleTH's nomination reasons, but maybe we could move the page to Jin (singer, born 1992). --Chiyako92 09:52, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose. There are four entries on the DAB page who readers might reasonably search for as Jin (singer). Making one of the WP:TOPIC will confuse some readers and very likely accumulate bad links.
- Support the proposal to rename this article Jin (singer, born 1992), with Kim Seok-jin as a redirect to it. That title would, with any luck, jump out of the options in the search box to anyone looking for this article. Narky Blert (talk) 13:04, 22 August 2019 (UTC)
- Support Jin (singer, born 1992) - Having it just at Jin (singer) could cause confusion ... although I still kinda think the proposed one could cause confusion .... meh it's better than Jin (singer) anyway. –Dave | Davey2010Talk 13:24, 22 August 2019 (UTC)
- Strong Oppose move to Jin (singer, born 1992) per my reasoning in the last move. A reader unfamiliar with the singer would be much more likely to know his birth name than his birth year, so the 1992 disambiguation does little to help differentiate him to most of the readerbase. I will quote what I wrote in the last discussion: "His birth name has his stage name in it, and while all major publications that mention his birth year also mention his real name (examples: [14] [15]) I also found numerous examples that mention his birth name without the birth year (examples: [16] [17] [18] [19]). Honestly, his birth year is sparsely mentioned beyond 'meet Jin' profiles written by reliable sources, and even then they always mention his birth name, which makes the idea of his birth year being mentioned in the title less ideal. Thus, his birth name is more commonly referenced than his birth year, so I think due to how common the name 'Jin' is we should keep the page title 'Kim Seok-jin'." See WP:NATURAL, the current page name isn't ideal but I don't feel it should be changed to a less helpful one just to get his stage name in there. Narky Blert and BarrelProof, how would you feel about using the suggested name and adding a {{for}} template up top? I still feel that the the viewership stats I linked above indicate few editors would be looking elsewhere, but I do understand your reasoning.
- Somewhat unrelated but, Chiyako92 and Alexanderlee, how would you feel if, should the page be kept to his real name, we ignored the rule about using family names in subsequent mentions on the page and just used "Jin"? That may be clearer to readers and solve part of the issue. DanielleTH (Say hi!) 00:16, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
- @DanielleTH: if the article does stay with the name it currently has then I think using Jin throughout rather than Kim could potentially cause more problems in the long run, and disruption to other articles with names being changed and this article being used as reasoning. I’ve seen editors take one thing from one article and use it as reason to change numerous other articles to be the same. Especially with how prolific BTS members are I personally think it would be better to leave what isn’t broken, though if others disagree then I’ll support and continue to implement any changes to this article. Alex (talk) 00:39, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
- @DanielleTH: I think that he should be mentioned as "Jin", and that the article should be moved anyway, that's why I proposed the birth year disambiguation, even though I would prefer "Jin (singer)" and the {{for}} template you suggested. I don't really know if it makes sense to completely disambiguate the title preventively when Lovelyz's Jin might never be encyclopedic as a stand-alone article. I know this is the policy at it.wiki, but I admit I'm not familiar with en.wiki's one. --Chiyako92 07:26, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
- @DanielleTH: There was a recent discussion on a similar topic at Talk:Steve Smith (cricketer)#Requested move 14 July 2019. The discussion mentioned several other examples, and led to a further discussion at Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation#Primary topic and Incomplete disambiguation conflicts. Those are not precedents for this or any other RM, but the arguments are worth reading. Narky Blert (talk) 06:17, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
- Personally, I tend to be very reluctant about partial disambiguation. I generally think that if we're going to use parenthetical disambiguation, we should use a disambiguation phrase that is sufficient to fully disambiguate. —BarrelProof (talk) 07:07, 25 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose - I have no problem with partial disambiguation when used judiciously, and frankly the suggestion to move Steve Smith (cricketer) to Steve Smith (cricketer, born 1989) is an appalling one. But in this case, given the confusion and ambiguity, and the available of the naturally disambiguated full name, which is used in a reasonable number of places, I don't see a pressing reason to move. — Amakuru (talk) 21:50, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
- Oppose - WP:SINGLENAME suggests using the last name is known and used fairly often. Google search seems to show that it is. Given that other disambiguation seems problematic, this seems like the best title to stay at. Evaders99 (talk) 03:00, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Please change the name of the Wiki page from Kim Seokjin to Jin (at the top of the Wiki page). He is a member of BTS and his stage name is Jin. Please change the name above his main photo from Kim Seok-jin to Jin, his stage name (look at other members example). If you look at the pages for the other BTS members, their stage name ie RM, J-HOPE, Suga is the name of their page and above their photo, not their birth name. Because of this error, Google cannot find Jin's page to add to their BTS members page. Also, his name Kim Seok-jin should go underneath the main photo, above born ie:
Kim, Seok-jin Born December 4, 1992 (age 27) Gwacheon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea

The Kim Jin discourse
This whole discussion arises from Twitter, where people are questioning why is it only Jin's Wikipedia page that is using his last name whereas other members' pages all use their stage names/real names (All English Wikipedia pages). Usage of Kim in the page instead of Jin
As noticed, user Alexanderlee has said that we cannot use Jin just because it's an English Wikipedia. Therefore, A) Change his name to Seokjin Kim as it's an English Wikipedia B) This does not give user Alexanderlee to disrespect the culture, his own culture because of their stupid refusal to use his first name Seokjinnie moon (talk) 14:49, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
- Per MOS:SURNAME, subsequent uses of a person's name in a biographical article will use the person's surname, not their given name. This is the standard of the English language Wikipedia. If you wish to change this, and instead have subsequent uses of a person's name use their given name, I recommend you initiate a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biography to that effect. Also, referring to someone's actions as "stupid" is not helpful in achieving your desired changes. This has rather the opposite effect in convincing people you are correct. I strongly encourage you to use other means. Please see Wikipedia:No personal attacks. --Hammersoft (talk) 15:07, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
- As stated above, see MOS:SURNAME. Reason for using Kim instead of Jin has been stated time and time again, as seen in the history section; and not only by myself. Oh great, you're throwing in personal attacks now? If you're going to insult me, you could at least ping me. Alex (talk) 15:17, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
Why can't you just use his full name? Melcru11 (talk) 01:19, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- @Melcru11: because of the reasons stated above; I suggest you read them. Alex (talk) 07:35, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- If the issue is on second usage, we are inconsistent across the articles of BTS members. Compare:
Article title | Kim Seok-jin | Jungkook |
---|---|---|
Introductory sentences | Kim Seok-jin (Korean: 김석진; born on December 4, 1992), also known by his stage name Jin, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, and member of the South Korean boy band BTS since June 2013. Kim was scouted for the group while in university and joined Big Hit Entertainment as an actor, eventually transitioning to a Korean idol. | Jeon Jung-kook (Korean: 전정국; born September 1, 1997), better known mononymously as Jungkook (stylized as Jung Kook), is a South Korean singer and songwriter. He is a member of and vocalist in the South Korean boy band BTS. |
Subsequent reference in solo activities section | Kim collaborated with fellow BTS member V on the song "It's Definitely You", released as part of the Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth original soundtrack. He also joined BTS member Jungkook to sing and release an alternate version of "So Far Away", a song from BTS member Suga's self-titled mixtape Agust D. | In September 2015, Jungkook participated in the "One Dream, One Korea" campaign, taking part in a song collaboration alongside numerous Korean artists in memory of the Korean War. |
- That passage in this article is the most damning. We refer to Kim Seok-jin by his given name and Jeon Jung-kook by his stage name. Why the mismatch? I would argue that the article should be rewritten to use "Jin" as the subsequent reference form, at least once he begins performing. (Compare Madonna (entertainer), which never uses her surname as a subsequent reference.) Otherwise, there's a strong case to rewrite that passage in this article as follows (optional given names for clarity in brackets):
- Kim Seok-jin collaborated with fellow BTS member Kim Tae-hyung on the song "It's Definitely You", released as part of the Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth original soundtrack. He also joined BTS member Jeon [Jung-kook] to sing and release an alternate version of "So Far Away", a song from BTS member Min [Yoon-gi]'s self-titled mixtape Agust D.
- So, to reframe the question, why are we externally inconsistent with other entertainers' articles, both inside and outside BTS, and why are we internally inconsistent, using other members' stage names but the subject's surname in the same sentence? —C.Fred (talk) 16:15, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
- Let's be externally and internally consistent and apply WP:MONONYM to the article titles and MOS:SURNAME to the articles then. I opposed the Jungkook rename. If Wikipedia is going to be a model encyclopedia, then these are consistent policies to follow. Evaders99 (talk) 23:58, 21 September 2020 (UTC)
- And why not MOS:STAGENAME? —C.Fred (talk) 01:17, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
- Because in most cases, these aren't pseudonyms. Most Kpop artists are called "Group-name's First-name" and I believe the intent of WP:MONONYM is not to make the First-name the primary article. Evaders99 (talk) 04:07, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
- And why not MOS:STAGENAME? —C.Fred (talk) 01:17, 22 September 2020 (UTC)
- Let's be externally and internally consistent and apply WP:MONONYM to the article titles and MOS:SURNAME to the articles then. I opposed the Jungkook rename. Suggestion for title change
As a continuation of the discussion on the move (?) of the title of this Wikipedia article. May I suggest simply Jin (of BTS)? Sorry I am new here so please tell me if I didn't understand something but basically I think the uniformity of the BTS member's articles as a whole should be taken into consideration especially because they are of same type (they are all biographies of living people, of South Korean Nationalities, with stage names and Korean names, etc). And in comparison with the other member's articles, all the members are referred to by their stage names or pronouns. Jin is the only exception. PurpleIsTheBestColour (talk) 13:26, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

Jin’s military Career
Is it too early to add a military career for Jin’s wiki? Since he enlisted yesterday December 13, 2022 2603:8080:7D07:7700:E9BA:DB27:7165:67E8 (talk) 15:09, 13 December 2022 (UTC)
- Could someone add am A:B comparison photo of him like in the BBC here [20] for how he looked before and after going into service. ErnestKrause (talk) 15:27, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- I already mentioned this on Btspurplegalaxy's talk page, but there are no pictures of him entering service (maybe a few paparazzi ones; it was a private ceremony and media was not invited). The picture of him with a buzzcut, apart from not adding anything of value to the article, is a selfie uploaded to Weverse; not sure that passes Wikipedia's filter (I'm really not familiar with that). I checked multiple articles of enlisted or formerly enlisted idols and couldn't find any pictures of them during their entrance ceremony, service or discharge. Unless being in the Army impacts his health and or looks I fail to see how a before and after comparison would be relevant enough to include, especially now; he enlisted only a few days ago. - Ïvana (talk) 18:18, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
- This other image from Billboard is being marked as a 'courtesy' photo here [21]. ErnestKrause (talk) 18:09, 17 December 2022 (UTC)
- I'd also like to know what value including such a photo would add to the existing article. And the BB photo looks like a snap from the Bangtan Bomb video. -- Carlobunnie (talk) 00:52, 18 December 2022 (UTC)
- The image looks flattering and as if the members of the group are taking it all in stride and not moping. If they are going into the service with high spirits, then I think it is to their credit and will gain fan loyalty. ErnestKrause (talk) 16:17, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
- But what encyclopaedic value does that add to the article? -- Carlobunnie (talk) 17:25, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
- They are going into a scheduled separation for 3 years starting this month; are they happy about it or do they have regrets? Are you saying that its enough said in the article as is in its current form? The FA for Elvis on Wikipedia seemed to make more of an issue about this same type of transition into the military. ErnestKrause (talk) 17:35, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
- Ernest you seem to somehow not understand what is being asked, so I will repeat it again: what encyclopaedic value does adding that photo of Jin contribute to the article? -- Carlobunnie (talk) 18:35, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
- "are they happy about it or do they have regrets?" I don't think we can infer from a picture what is their state of mind; if you feel that that is important to include then you should rely on sourced statements from Jin or the other members, not pictures open to interpretation. There is a lot that could be said about enlistment and the backlash BTS, and especially Jin, received even when they never said they were aiming for exemption; how entertainment companies (not Hybe) used their name to push for exemption for their own artists; how politicians discussed it for years; western media response to the news etc etc. But thats a different discussion and it is probably better suited for the BTS article. Like I said before, I don't see the value of adding any of the pictures mentioned above. - Ïvana (talk) 18:49, 19 December 2022 (UTC)
- You're both rather convincing on this; it may be a matter of a few months before he is in the press again. What if he receives an offer to remake a film like GI Blues. ErnestKrause (talk) 15:28, 20 December 2022 (UTC)
- I don't know the scope of restrictions imposed on conscripts. Either way, WP:CRYSTALBALL. - Ïvana (talk) 18:34, 20 December 2022 (UTC)

Wouldn't consider that 'official', the website that picture was taken from is for family members and friends; you need to register and know exactly where he is stationed, which was leaked to the media. Soompi is also an unreliable source per WP:KO/RS. Even if Big Hit released a picture, what's the point of adding it? Not trying to be rude but I don't understand why you're pushing so hard for pictures to be included. Like Carlobunnie said, what encyclopaedic value does that add? I haven't seen any in other idols articles, not even Seungri who was suspended from service and is currently in military prison. Mentioning his date of enlistment and circumstances surrounding it seems more than enough. - Ïvana (talk) 01:16, 29 December 2022 (UTC)

Where Jin grew up - Gwacheon
Hello! I know Jin was born in Anyang, but can we add that he grew up in Gwacheon? I submitted this request before and it was brushed aside however, I am bringing it up again as I watched a YouTube video from a relatively large creator who incorrectly stated Jin grew in up in Anyang.
During his "Running Man" appearance, Jin himself said he moved shortly after being born in Anyang and does not remember it. I think it is a disservice to not add Gwacheon to his page.
Thank you! 2607:FEA8:33A0:D400:707F:2653:4A38:9 (talk) 23:09, 24 February 2023 (UTC)

- Oppose - This was last discussed here Talk:Kim_Seok-jin/Archive_1#Requested_move_19_August_2019 and the same concerns remain. I don't think Jin (singer) is enough to disambiguate from other singers with this stage name. Evaders99 (talk) 04:43, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
- I agree, especially since Seokjin has other business endeavors besides being a singer. He's a restaurant co-owner and establishing a brewery. Having his wiki page under "Kim Seokjin" seems appropriate to highlight all these different professional avenues. 2607:FEA8:33A0:D400:ECFD:6FB0:4AF7:AC52 (talk) 12:22, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- Support per nom. Jin is his official stage name. His official artist profiles also refer to him as Jin. Examples: Official website: [23] Spotify: [24] Other articles that are disambiguated as Jin use it as a surname, Astro's Jin Jin doesn't use the singular name. Global revision: Change from “Kim” to “Jin”
Could we make a global revision and refer to Jin as “Jin” rather than “Kim”?
First, “Jin” is how he’s known as a BTS member. While the stage names of other BTS members are used in their respective wiki pages, “Jin” is a more appropriate option for the sake of coherence.
Second, “Jin”, “Seokjin”, and “Kim Seokjin” – but rarely just “Kim”, if ever – are how he’s addressed officially by his music label, by the media both foreign and local, by his fans, and in his own introduction in various appearances.
Also, using “Jin” helps avoid misunderstanding because two other members also share the same surname “Kim”. ElfZiry (talk) 05:39, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
- Read Frequently asked questions (FAQ) above. Btspurplegalaxy 💬 🖊️ 06:03, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
- The other BTS members all have their stage names as the title for their page, could we change Jin’s page title from “Kim Seok-jin” to “Jin”, for the sake of coherence?
- By doing so, we can then make a global change from “Kim” to “Jin”, which is a better option for the reasons cited above, in the original question. ElfZiry (talk) 06:26, 17 March 2023 (UTC)
