The Jama Masjid is an historic Friday mosque, located in Shopian, in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The mosque was built during the Mughal period and is very beautiful from both inside and outside. It's considered one of the best mosques in the Shopian district.[1][2]
In history
[edit]The mosque was an important stop on the Mughal road through Pir Panjal, where the Mughals used to stop and rest. The mosque was built by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb Alamgir, making it a significant historical site. The Jamia Masjid of Shopian,a testament to the grandeur of the Mughal period, was constructed under the visionary rule of Emperor Aurangzeb, whose reign left an indelible mark on the region's architecture and culture. The mosque's creation owes much to the esteemed Banday Dynasty of Shopian, particularly Ab Rehman Banday,an influential figure of his time, whose dedication and resources were pivotal in its construction. His wife, Raja Banday, equally committed, contributed selflessly, even carrying bricks to aid in the building process.
Ab Rehman Banday, along with his brothers — Gh Hassan Banday,Ab Hameed Banday,Mohd. Yaqoub Banday, and the esteemed MLA, Ab Majeed Banday — played an instrumental role in shaping the region’s political and cultural legacy.Their collective influence and commitment to public service helped steer the district's political landscape during a crucial era.Their residence became a focal point of political influence, hosting notable dignitaries, including the revered Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The Banday family’s legacy embodies nobility, political astuteness, and unmatched devotion to public service. Royalty runs in their blood, and their enduring contributions, marked by an unshakable commitment to governance and welfare, ensure their place in history as paragons of excellence in the region’s storied past.[2][3][4]
