Welcome to Bronx

Talk:Bronx is having a discussion of the name and capitalization. Jim.henderson (talk) 21:00, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

See Talk:Bronx#Request for Comments on renaming "(The) Bronx" (September 2010). If moved to add your own comment, please (re–)read the extensive earlier discussion first. —— Shakescene (talk) 03:07, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

New York City articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the New York City articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

For the Wikipedia 1.0 editorial team, SelectionBot 23:24, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

I have nominated World Science Festival for a featured article review here. Please join the discussion on whether this article meets featured article criteria. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. If substantial concerns are not addressed during the review period, the article will be moved to the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Delist" the article's featured status. The instructions for the review process are here.

FYI, World Science Festival is currently being discussed as a featured article removal candidate. Nageh (talk) 08:15, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Should probably be a good article; very well written and a quirky piece of history =) ResMar 20:56, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

Late 19th century near Brooklyn Bridge

If anyone can characterize what is in the foreground of this (where exactly this was taken from, building in foreground), please expand the description (on Commons). Thanks. - Jmabel | Talk 15:58, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

I've added a close-up cropping and enhancement to help identification. It look to me as if the image was taken from the Manhattan side, south of the bridge, looking up the East River. Further than that I can't say, except that I wonder if the building in the foreground might not be along Broadway or William Street, something basically parallel to the river. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:42, 29 October 2010 (UTC)
I'd agree with all that. Manhattan side, south of the bridge is certainly true. The main thrust of my question is whether anyone can actually pin down a geolocation and/or identify the (presumably long-since-demolished) building. - Jmabel | Talk 05:47, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Turning "New York" into a disambiguation page

There is a current discussion at Talk:New York#Requested move about converting New York into a disambiguation page and using another name (such as "New York (U.S. state)" or "New York State") for the state, with implied parallel title changes for Economy of New York (as distinguished from Economy of New York City), Geography of New York, History of New York, etc. —— Shakescene (talk) 17:28, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

Some 19th century images of Brooklyn

I just went through Commons:Category:Stereo cards of buildings in Brooklyn and added some reasonable categories to these images (which were all previously only in a temporary category generated when a bot uploaded the NYPL Robert N. Dennis collection of stereoscopic views). However, most of these could use further categorization in terms of year they were built (and, in many cases, year they were destroyed, or their current use which is likely to be different after more than a century). Doubtless someone who knows Brooklyn history well could come up with additional useful categories and useful description of locations, etc. For example, I imagine it should be possible to add quite a bit of information about the theater and post office in the picture I've included in this post. Some could doubtless be pinned down better for their dates, as well. - Jmabel | Talk 19:39, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

(Former?) fountain in Central Park

Does anyone know anything about this fountain at "the Fifth Avenue entrance" to Central Park? Photos are about 140 years old, so it might no longer be there. - Jmabel | Talk 18:48, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

Got at least part of my own answer. It was apparently called "Swan and Cygnet", sculpted by John S. Moulton, and I suspect it is no longer there. - Jmabel | Talk 19:28, 13 November 2010 (UTC)

Neither the Parks Department website nor the Central Park Conservancy's list that statue or fountain, so I believe you are correct that it is no longer there. I haven't found anything yet that says what happened to it. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:38, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Shadow lengths suggest to my mind a midday midsummer picture, which with shadow directions would make the heading northwest. 1870 parlance would be inclined to label the entrance at now Grand Army Plaza as the "Fifth Avenue" one and be more specific in referring to another of the gates on 5th. Together this all suggests, at least me, three chances out of four that the camera was sitting within a dozen yards of 40°45′57″N 73°58′25″W / 40.76583°N 73.97361°W / 40.76583; -73.97361 and the fountain in the water of "The Pond" a dozen yards northwest of there. And one chance out of four I'm wrong by miles. Jim.henderson (talk) 23:16, 15 November 2010 (UTC)

I agree it's probably either the Pond or something right by the Pond. Oh, well, there's a Commons category for it now; sooner or later someone will run across something about the sculptor. - Jmabel | Talk 06:04, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

19th century photo of "Trinity Church" (not the one one Wall Street)

Church of the Ascension

The NYPL at least tentatively describes this as "Trinity Church", but clearly it's not the famous one at Broadway & Wall. Most likely no longer extant, but can anyone identify it? By the way, there are several unidentified churches in Commons:Category:Stereo cards of churches in Manhattan, New York City if anyone wants to have a go at identifying them. - Jmabel | Talk 06:12, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Looks like the Church of the Ascension, an Episcopal church also by Richard Upjohn, built at about the same time as the current (third) Trinity Church was being built. See here for a period drawing of it. It's still standing, at Fifth Avenue and 10th Street in the Village. Not connected with Trinity, as far as I can tell. Beyond My Ken (talk) 07:58, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks! Yes, I'm sure that's it. - Jmabel | Talk 22:53, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Another church

I continue to work my way through Commons:Category:Stereo cards of churches in Manhattan, New York City. I've been able to identify most of these (even some others that had misleading descriptions) and to add relevant categories. Again, help from someone who knows NYC history better than I would be useful. Here's one where I have no idea, but am intrigued: obviously, some church that was gutted by a fire in the 19th century. Any thoughts? - Jmabel | Talk 07:45, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

The image's alternate title says it's "St. George's", so I think this would probably be St. George's Episcopal Church (Manhattan) on Stuyvesant Square. It had a fire in 1865 -- one source says the roof was damaged, another says it "burnt down", but whatever the specifics it had to be rebuilt. I can't find the date it re-opened, but I assume it would have taken some time, even with J.P. Morgan's money behind it (he was a member). St. George's does indeed have two towers, one on the north side of the building and one on the south, so that fits the description as well. Like the Church of the Ascension, St. George's in also still standing (although it's now part of a combined parish with Calvary Church on Park Avenue South). Beyond My Ken (talk) 07:57, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Yup. Quite familiar with that church (& I'd already tagged quite a few other pictures of it) and even knew it had an 1865 fire. I don't know why I didn't put two and two together. Good detective work! - Jmabel | Talk 05:25, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! I've done a re-write & expansion of the church's article, which you might want to take a look at. Beyond My Ken (talk) 05:34, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

My last thread (I hope) on those stereo cards of Manhattan churches

Commons:Category:Stereo cards of churches in Manhattan, New York City: a lot of these could use a more specific geographic category (neighborhood) if anyone is so inclined. Also, as of this writing, 10 distinct images (with a PNG and a JPEG for each) are also in Commons:Category:Unidentified churches in Manhattan, New York City. Some even have a church name, denomination, or even a street name from NYPL (though we've seen already that 2-4% of those have been inaccurate), but remain basically unidentified. (I wouldn't consider a church really to be identified until we have at least most of denomination, pretty precise location, approximate date of construction, whether it is extant and if it isn't then when it was destroyed, etc.) For some of these where I have guesses, I've made remarks on their respective talk pages. User:Beyond My Ken has been incredibly helpful on this, and his thoughts on the unidentified ones are at User talk:Beyond My Ken#New York churches. Of the ones discussed there, the only one I'd consider now to be firmly identified is the old Mariners Church. - Jmabel | Talk 19:00, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

If anyone wants to use the Notes area of my talk page (linked by Jmabel above) as a central repository for any facts picked up about these churches, that's fine with me. Beyond My Ken (talk) 20:42, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
I think I've done what I can, with two definites and a probable. Nothing else has panned out, and some of the images just don't offer any affordances for me to latch on to and investigate. (Frankly, I don't know all that much about churches per se, so I need something in thye image to kick-start my inquiry.) If something pops up, I'll let you know. Marshall Chess Club

If anyone lives in New York near 23 West 10th Street, and has a camera, a photo for Marshall Chess Club would be lovely. Front door, interior, anything would be great. Oh, and on the way out, scream "CHECKMATE!" as loud as you can.

Many thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 08:32, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

I've added an image I took this afternoon -- I was (more or less) in the neighborhood and went by. Unfortunately it's only an exterior shot, as I didn't have the time to take up the invitation of a very nice gentlemen I met om the sidewalk to come inside. If someone else can do the inside, that would be great, or I may go back if the occasion arises. (Probably not until after the holidays, though.) Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:59, 16 December 2010 (UTC)

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Please let leave a comment on the Portals talk page or let me know if you have any questions or ideas. --Kumioko (talk) 19:19, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

New York by Gehry

The article "Beekman Tower" should be renamed "New York by Gehry" or "8 Spruce Street". "Beekman Tower" is not the name of the building.

Other information about this building, found online:

I've deleted the material you left here, as it was clearly a copyright violation: we're not allowed to post large blocks of copyrighted material, even on talk pages, although it can be used as source material for the facts included.

Yes, I agree that the article should be at "8 Spruce Street", which is where it was until December 5th when another editor moved it without prior discussion. I objected at the time (you can see my half of the conversation here), and I still hold that opinion. The building will always be 8 Spruce Street, but I have grave doubts that "New York by Gehry" will stand the test of time.

Here's what I propose: I'm going to move it back to 8 Spruce Street, and make a redirect to it from "New York by Gehry". If the editor who moved it last month thinks my revert is not a good idea, he can start a request move discussion, and we'll see what consensus is. If that happens, I'll post a notice here for interested parties. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:30, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

Inaccurate map in The Bronx

I just noticed that the map in the article does not include the carve-out of Marble Hill. The question is, should the current map stay or go? More opinions welcome, as we have a stalemate on the talk page. ScottyBerg (talk) 15:52, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

I would note that there's a reciprocal problem in the map in the infobox of Manhattan. I have added notes regarding the error to both images captions. The images really should remain until corrected. —Elipongo (Talk contribs) 18:57, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
I've reverted to older, more accurate maps in both articles until the newer ones can be corrected. —Elipongo (Talk contribs) 19:31, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Yes, I think that helps greatly. Thanks very much. The new Manhattan map is fine. The new Bronx map is better, as it shows Marble Hill, but remains problematic as it shows the neighborhood in the same color as the rest of the Bronx. I've contacted the map creator in Commons and also nominated both maps for deletion there. Hopefully that will result in a better map. ScottyBerg (talk) 19:39, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Actually both of the older maps display Marble Hill with a cross-hatch of grey and yellow. I would speculate that is a compromise from an editing dispute, but I'm not interested enough to dig through the page histories and archives to find out for sure. The deletions aren't the best idea as I've pointed out at the discussions on Commons. —Elipongo (Talk contribs) 20:05, 4 February 2011 (UTC)
Those cross-hatchings aren't visible in the size shown in the article. ScottyBerg (talk) 20:09, 4 February 2011 (UTC)

Prospect Park Parade Ground / Neighborhood Confusion

I would like to write an article on Prospect Park's Parade Ground. Also, I would like to mention it in the Prospect Park article where currently no mention of it is found.

It is an official part of the park and I am not sure why it isn't mentioned anywhere in the Prospect Park article. http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Prospect_Park_(Brooklyn)

Here is the page for it on Prospect Park's official site: http://www.prospectpark.org/parade_ground

It is an important historically significant site in Brooklyn and I think deserves mention.

While researching this I discovered that the Prospect Park article says "public park in the New York City borough of Brooklyn located between Park Slope, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, Kensington, Windsor Terrace and Flatbush Avenue, Grand Army Plaza and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden." In keeping with no mention of the Parade Ground, no mention of the southern border of the park is to be found.

According to the list of Brooklyn Neighborhoods article (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/List_of_Brooklyn_neighborhoods), the neighborhood to the south of the parade grounds is "Prospect Park South" which would sound like it makes a lot of sense to be the neighborhood at the southern border. However, on the Prospect Park South article (http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Prospect_Park_South,_Brooklyn) it says the northern border of the neighborhood is Church Ave., exactly one block south of the bottom of the park.

I have found mention that "Caton Park" is the "micro-neighborhood" immediately south of the park and north of prospect park south. (http://www.cb14brooklyn.com/our-neighborhood/caton-park/). There doesn't seem to be any mention of Caton Park on wikipedia.

In addition to the Brooklyn Neighborhoods article's designation of the neighborhood as "Prospect Park South", Google Maps also makes this distinction. I have also seen all of the neighborhoods in the area referred to as "Victorian Flatbush".

You can see the confusion. Any recommendations for what should be done?

(Very) old post office

"Old post office, New York"

This would predate the City Hall Post Office and Courthouse (New York City). Does anyone know where it would have been? - Jmabel | Talk 06:01, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Before the new General Post Office was built in City Hall Park, the main post office was at the Middle Dutch Church in Nassau Street from 1845 on - which this image doesn't look like at all. That covers the photographic era, so I suggest that maybe "Old post office" doesn't mean "The old main post office" but instead "An old post office", meaning that it's a branch office rather than the GPO. Beyond My Ken (talk) 07:08, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Maybe, but it's in a large set, most of which say "New post office" and show the one near city hall. - Jmabel | Talk 07:58, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Hmm. I wonder if the p.o. at the Middle Dutch Chuch got so overcrowded that they had to build an annex to accomodate the overflow? The building here looks very temporary. I've no evidence for this, it's just speculation. There must be some monograph on NYC Post Offices out there somewhere. Beyond My Ken (talk) 12:03, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Just checked the Encyclopedia of NYC, which confirmed the facts above, but also said that the original city p.o. was in the rotunda on Chambers Street, but that a branch opened near Wall Street in 1835. In 1845 when the main p.o. moved to the church, the branch moved to Chatham Square -- so I suppose what's pictured could be the Chatham Square branch. Beyond My Ken (talk) 12:08, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Interesting. I'll hold off for now on trying to say anything definitive, but at least that gives a direction for research. - Jmabel | Talk 01:29, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
This is the "Old Dutch Church" (Middle Dutch Church) at Nassau and Cedar Streets, but shown from the back (Nassau and Liberty) "where mail bags and carriers received attention[?]". Shown after P.O. had moved in 1875. See back of card at NYPL website. Station1 (talk) 05:47, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

Manhattan photo request

Would someone mind snapping a shot of the Entrance to the Air France ticket counter on the 56th Street side of Avenue of the Americas Plaza? It will be helpful for the Avenue of the Americas Plaza article and for the Air France article

@WhisperToMe: Ok, so I'm a bit uncertain about what you are looking for. The 56th street entrance to 125 West 55th Street is addressed as 120 West 26th Street. Most of that side of the building is obscured by scaffolding, and there's no Air France ticket counter, although there is an empty retail space under the scaffolding. I took a shot of the 55th Street entrance and a couple of the 56th Street entrance, none of which are particularly interesting, as the subject is pretty unphotogenic, at least to someone of my modest abilities. Do you want me to post those so you can take a look, or was there something specific you were hoping to get? Beyond My Ken (talk) 19:24, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Yes, please post the photos. Even if it isn't exactly the take I'm looking for, they will be helpful in illustrating the article about the building. By the way, the shot from Google Maps view I posted showed an Air France logo on the pane of one side of the building - It may be outdated, though. The logo may be gone. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:42, 1 March 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, it's gone. That space is the empty retail space I mentioned above, under the scaffolding. I'll post my shots later tonight -- right now my eyes are dilated from an eye doctor appointment, so I can't do any image work for a while. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:13, 2 March 2011 (UTC)
For what they're worth, you can find my two images on Wikimedia Commons at Category:125 West 55th Street Beyond My Ken (talk) 03:05, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Hmmm, http://www.airfrance.us/US/en/local/avotreservice/pointsdeventes/agence_nyc.htm at the Air France website doesn't list the 55th Street building anymore. It only lists JFK and EWR airports. Maybe Air France closed its city ticket office? As per http://www.airfrance.us/US/en/local/resainfovol/meilleuresoffres/marketing_Week_of_Romance.htm the airline's USA executive offices are still in the building. Great historical photo resource

This may be old news to everybody here, but it's news to me: the entire Berenice Abbott archive of photos of "Changing New York" from the mid-1930s, all public domain (she was working for a federal project) are on Flickr.[1] There seem to be hundreds of them, but only two dozen are uploaded to Commons. ScottyBerg (talk) 16:27, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

I think, although I could be wrong, that all of the Abbott photos were already available on the NYPL Digital Gallery, but it's great to see them collected together and given wider circulation. Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:52, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

Queens photo request: Bulova Corporate Center

Hi! Is anyone near Jackson Heights? Would someone mind photographing the front of the Bulova Corporate Center? It is at 75-20 Astoria Blvd; East Elmhurst, New York - Here is a front view - It would be for the article Bulova

Also, I wonder if the text on this side reads "British Airways" - If it does, it would be nice if that side of the building was also photographed

Thank you, WhisperToMe (talk) 01:36, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Yes it's a lovely building which I haven't seen up close in about ten years. Two weeks ago, biking with a gang to Jackson Dinver we were a quarter mile east of it, and I was half a mile west of it returning alone to Manhattan via Hobart Street. The north or front side which I remember well will be a nice sunrise or sunset picture in midsummer; the other sides might be good any time of the year. I'll keep it in mind, next time I visit Laguardia Airport or South Corona. Jim.henderson (talk) 10:16, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

That's a tough one. I looked around and all I could find was what you've already found. It doesn't help that he has a common name which is the same as a famous jailhouse lawyer. ScottyBerg (talk) 14:34, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Unbelievable. You'd think there'd be more on this guy. He was the Billy Mays of the 1970's. For a while when I was a little kid, I confused him with Jerry Carroll. ----DanTD (talk) 17:41, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Rosenberg was the guy in the hard hat, right? Beyond My Ken (talk) 17:48, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Yup. This guy. I just wish I could find more video clips of his other commercials. ----DanTD (talk) 22:07, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
I looked, and couldn't find any. That video dates back to before the creation of the 718 area code in 1984. ScottyBerg (talk) 01:00, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure they all do. That was actually one of his more recent business ventures. I vaguely remember reading that the guy died in 1984, but I can't remember where I read that. ----DanTD (talk) 01:42, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
Looking through Google News, I found this[2]. Looks like his name was Gerald Rosenberg, and that the city didn't think much of him! ScottyBerg (talk) 01:51, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
Heh. The Times reported in 1977 that he was put out of business by the city for deceptive advertising and was looking for a job. At that point he apparently faded into history. There's lots of coverage. You know, you don't need a death date to start an article. ScottyBerg (talk) 01:54, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
Well, I wanted a lot more than just the death date. Unfortunatley, reading that article either requires buying it directly from the New York Times or reading on LexisNexis. ----DanTD (talk) 02:04, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
I can get those articles without charge, if you need 'em. ScottyBerg (talk) 02:12, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
Go for it. In fact, you can even add it to my sandbox, along with anything else you can find. Just out of curiosity, are you old enough to remember any of those commercials? ----DanTD (talk) 02:19, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
Good idea. And yep, I remember. ScottyBerg (talk) 02:30, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
Me, too. Beyond My Ken (talk) 02:32, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
It would be nice to know if he's still alive. Kind of strange to have neither a birth or death date. ScottyBerg (talk) 02:41, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
I've had this in my sandbox for a while, and ScottyBerg was a great help with it before he was unjustly blocked, but I can't find anything else on the guy. Anyone think I should just post the article as is, and stick an {{Expert-subject}} tag on it? ----DanTD (talk) 15:40, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
I think it's enough to post as an article and see what else turns up. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:15, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

...will take place tomorrow (Friday March 25) at Washington Place and Greene Street. User:Shirtwaist suggested on his talkpage that it would be nice to have an image of the ceremony in the article. I went, but got there too late to get close enough to take any worthwhile pictures. I hope someone else was abl to get something. Beyond My Ken (talk) 20:38, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
Oh no. I went, but didn't bring my camera as I thought you would. Seriously. ScottyBerg (talk) 20:40, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
Darn. I didn't realize that the turnout was going to be so big, or I would have tried harder to get there earlier. As it was, I was so far away I didn't even bother to shoot anything. Oh, well. There were many people with cameras there, hopefully some of them were Wikipedians, or something will show up on Flickr that we can use. (There goes my budding career as a news photographer.) Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:03, 25 March 2011 (UTC)
I feel horrible. I was there a bit early, and while I couldn't see the stage I got up close and could have got some great photos. Terribly sorry about that. ScottyBerg (talk) 02:39, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
Always carry a little camera; not just to a staged scheduled event but always. At least a camera phone. The best camera at home is not as good as the camera you've got with you. Yesterday in Southside Pittsburgh I got plenty of nice shots with my compact camera until its battery ran down and I finished the day using the camera phone. Back to sweet home Manhattan tomorrow. Jim.henderson (talk) 15:31, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

I'm troubled by a number of the Bronx neighborhood articles, which seem to be thinly sourced and filled with OR. This Concourse article is especially problematic because I'm not finding evidence that there is such a neighborhood, though there is an "East Concourse" and "West Concourse" (though not in wide use). I've started a discussion in the talk page of the article and would appreciate input and suggestions. ScottyBerg (talk) 17:04, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

NRHP Categories for The Five Boroughs

This morning I created the Category:National Register of Historic Places in Queens County, New York. At some point during the week, maybe even today, I'm going to create more categories for the other four boroughs. I hope they'll be populated with all the NRHP-related articles for New York City, and I already brought this issue to WP:NRHP. ----DanTD (talk) 18:06, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Don't all these categories exist already? Beyond My Ken (talk) 20:58, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
Perhaps you're confusing them with categories for New York City Landmarks. When I look here, the only borough I see is for Queens. ----DanTD (talk) 03:58, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Yes, you seem to be correct - sorry about that. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:25, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
There's already Category:National Register of Historic Places in Manhattan and everything else is already in Category:National Register of Historic Places in New York City - not sure if there's enough there to split up without overcategorizing, but if you do I recommend using just Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island. That's much more common usage in NYC than "county", and the state is then unnecessary. Station1 (talk) 05:04, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
@DanTD: I second what Station1 said. New Yorkers almost never deal with counties, which are coextensive with boroughs in any case. Beyond My Ken (talk) 11:48, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Well, I saw Church of the Resurrection (Queens, New York) and Congregation Tifereth Israel (Queens, New York) incorrectly listed in Category:National Register of Historic Places in New York by county, and I just had to do something about it. ----DanTD (talk) 12:59, 3 May 2011 (UTC)

Complaint

P L E A S E !!!! Just give us a map -- a simple copy of bus routes in Manhattan and the boroughs!! I can't even find a Bus route map on a city bus!! WHY ??Do the people who design this SO overdone web site only travel by limousine?? Have they ever had to unravel the mysteries of city bus routes? Give them a bus pass and set them to the task for a minimum of seven days before they're allowed to write a single word more. Most of what is shown on these pages is useless. No -- let me amend that -- EVERYTHING that is shown on these pages is useless -- in finding one's way around New York City on a bus. I'm sure no one except other exasperated -would be travelers will ever read what I've written here, which is obvious when reading the comments of others. THAT is the MOST exasperating. Its like giving your writers permission to condescendingly pat us on the head and mummer sweet nothings in our ears . . . and then tell us to go play in the traffic. Larry Conroy 69.200.232.107 (talk) 14:04, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi again! The following photo request for the front of the Bulova Corporate Center at 75-20 Astoria Blvd; East Elmhurst, New York is still outstanding, as far as I know: Here is a front view - It would be for the article Bulova

Also, I wonder if the text on this side reads "British Airways" - If it does, it would be nice if that side of the building was also photographed

Digitalized New York newspapers

This may not be news to the rest of you, but it was to me. I just learned that the Library of Congress has digitalized a bunch of newspapers from throughout the country, including the old New York Tribune, New York World and New York Sun, from the 1800s through 1922. The available dates for each newspaper vary; some have just a few days and some many years, This is a treasure trove of hard-to-find source material, including public domain photographs (such as this one[3] I just uploaded). A full directory of all the newspapers can be found here. ScottyBerg (talk) 15:45, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

That's excellent, a very good find! Beyond My Ken (talk) 16:16, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

I think this view is looking northeast from near the Hudson, indeed near the once and future World Trade Center. The two towers on the right are obviously the Park Row Building and the pointy spire at extreme left is probably the Tribune Building, but what is that big white building in the middle? The other spire in middle left cannot be Trinity Church unless I'm thoroughly confused (Could Trinity be the POV?) Jim.henderson (talk) 00:02, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Jim - I don't have an answer for you, but try going to this website (the city's GIS page), click on the "use aerial map" icon (looks like a camera), the, after the current photo loads,, dial it back to 1924, that might give you a better idea of the buildings that were extant in 1901. Unfortunately, the "i" information icon only seems to work with the current map, though. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:33, 4 September 2011 (UTC)
I think it's looking toward the northwest from closer to the East River. The tall building is probably the St. Paul Building and the spire is St. Paul's Chapel. Station1 (talk) 21:29, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

The primary editor, User:BruceWHain, was exhibiting some pretty extreme ownership tendencies. Other editors have since stepped in, and BHW received a couple of blocks for edit-warring and disruptive editing. The article still needs some trimming, tightening and stylistic re-working, so other input would be valuable. I'm also concerned that the ownership issues haven't gone away, so other eyes to keep a watch on it for when BWH comes off his block would be a good idea as well. The Japanese School of New York

Hi! About the The Japanese School of New York... before it moved to Connecticut in 1992, it occupied two campuses in Queens.

Did the school move from one Queens campus to another? Did it occupy both campuses at the same time? Also, which neighborhoods definitively were the campuses in? Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation COI updates

Someone working for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation has been trying to update the page to the museum's latest mission statement and brand identity, using copyrighted copy-pastes from http://www.guggenheim.org/guggenheim-foundation. After a couple copyvio warnings, they enlisted a sockpuppet or meat puppet for the same copyvio edits.

The article is probably out of date and should be updated, but with non-copyright violating text, and with third party citations. Anyone care to help? (Cross-posted from Talk:WikiProject Museums). --Dennis Bratland (talk) 00:18, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Lack of References and Citations on many street articles

Many articles for New York City streets, particularly in the outer boroughs like Brooklyn do not have proper references and citations proving their notability and historical significance. This has been the case ever since the articles were created. Where can we find proof that these streets are well known enough to be on Wikipedia? I would nominate some of them for deletion, but do not want arguments to erupt like in this this AfD because of people who have no knowledge of street notability voting to keep a street article just because a single subway station serves it. Background: There was a previous requested-move survey which ran from late May to mid June. Are these schools in Coney Island or Brighton Beach?

Hi! At Talk:Brighton_Beach#Map I realized that even though some NYT newspaper sources said that some schools were in Brighton Beach, some maps accompanying different NYT articles about those two neighborhoods would place the schools in Coney Island, and those NYT articles express the boundaries in writing.

How many of you know Haitian Creole, Albanian, Polish, or Hebrew? Ah... this is English Wikipedia. If you want stubs in those other languages, best to approach the Wikipedias written in those languages. Beyond My Ken (talk) 06:41, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
The idea is that we get people on the English Wikipedia to then write articles on the Wikipedias of those other languages (especially since some on here may not have thought about contributing in other languages). There's nothing wrong with cross-wiki efforts, is there? BTW I've made multiple requests for starting articles about the New York City DOE in multiple languages and so many of those requests have been fulfilled. Also I tried the Haitian Creole Wikipedia, and I can't find any active users... WhisperToMe (talk) 06:48, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
English Wikipedia has nothing to do with Wikipedias in other language. Post messages on those Wikipedias if you're concerned about them, or run the English Wikipedia article through a mechanical translator, or something, but this is not the place to post these concerns of yours. Beyond My Ken (talk) 06:55, 12 February 2013 (UTC)
They are separate projects, but they are all related to each other as they are all Wikimedia Foundation projects. There are many users who go across the various language projects with their contributions. In terms of policy (as in 'you guys need to do something about this XYZ policy') one shouldn't campaign on other wikis since they all have separate policies dictated by separate user bases, but I don't see a problem simply asking for users who speak other languages to go on other Wikimedia Foundation projects to help coverage in a subject. And cooperation among the language projects is useful. I wrote an article on Eduardo Darino "eduardo darino"., filmmaker working in New York City since 1973. I think it can be linked to this Wiki. Can you consider -and if I must do it, How is it done? Thanks. Bodora (talk) 22:17, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

I looked through your article quickly (and did some cleanup and wikification on it, but not as much as it needs - which is a thorough copyediting for grammar and style), and in my opinion the subject's connection to NYC is not strong enough to justify linking to this project. Others may differ, though, so see what kind of response you get. But, in any event, the article does cry out for cleaning up, so you would be well advised to find someone who's willing to do that for you -- maybe someone from the Film Project. There was recently a move discussion on Theatre District, New York, to move the article to Theater District, New York. This discussion took place without any notification to this project, which is the logical place for such a notification to be made. The move was closed by User:RegentsPark. I reverted it, totally unaware that it was the result of a RM discussion: I thought it was simply an inadvertent (and incorrect) move by an editor (not an admin - there was no indication that the move was the result of an RM discussion). RegentsPark decided not to revert my reversion, but editor User:Epeefleche decided otherwise, and reverted. I am asking for another RM to put this article back where it belongs, at Theatre District, New York. I have stated that I will stand by whatever the result of the discussion is, but I do insist that the move discussion be representative of the Wikipedia community, and not simply the result of the opinions of a few people.

I urge members of the New York City Project to express their opinions, which I will stand by. Beyond My Ken (talk) 09:02, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi BMK. The move discussion was noticed as required. It attracted robust participation from many editors. Was open for a week. Had a consensus, sysop close. That discussion and that close were both reflected on the talkpage whose move you reverted.
The closer then indicated to you, in subsequent discussion, that though your view differed from the consensus, he did not believe your view was correct. You then anyway edited directly against that consensus, on the article page.
The discussion just closed -- under the circumstances, I'm not clear why we would reopen a just-closed robust discussion, just because an editor dislikes it. There is more on this issue here.--Epeefleche (talk) 10:07, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
The discussion was not properly publicized and I have re-opened it. Beyond My Ken (talk) 10:54, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
The discussion was open for a week, and publicized as required. It had robust input from a good number of editors. What is your basis for asserting that it was not "properly" publicized? Greater publication is acceptable, but certainly the level of publication here met our requirements, and was proper.--Epeefleche (talk) 11:00, 22 February 2013 (UTC)
  • To avoid the communication issue, if someone activates Alerts bot for this project and then each add the Alerts on your watchlists it will automatically pick up any AfDs RMs etc. Cheers. In ictu oculi (talk) 15:30, 22 February 2013 (UTC)

New here

Hello all. I'm new here and not really sure how the Wikiproject works, but I've written an article that I think falls under the aegis of Wikiproject NYC (Chelsea Recreation Center) and I would be interested to find out how it could be categorized here. I'd also be very appreciative of any feedback/edits and discussion re: potentially adding/categorizing other notable Parks & Rec facilities, as well as any guidance on how to better contribute here. Thanks! -Thomas Craven (talk) 23:16, 24 February 2013 (UTC). Editing to add

The Cooper Square Hotel

Hi,

I work for Black Frame PR, who represents The Standard Hotel chain, which currently owns what used to be The Cooper Square Hotel. They have requested that the page be taken down as the building no longer goes by this name, nor is it owned in any way shape or form by those who constructed the building. It is also undergoing a major renovation, to be unveiled this Fall, which will render the facade virtually unrecognizable. Thanks for any help you have to offer.

All the best,

Nick Spain — Preceding unsigned comment added by NickSpain (talkcontribs) 20:40, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

I have moved the article to The Standard, East Village. When the renovation is complete, if it is significant as you say it will be, we will add information about it to the article. In the meantime, I have added a cited mention that renovations are taking place. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:10, 17 April 2013 (UTC)
P.S. Since you are a P.R. person for the hotel, please do not make changes to the article yourself, this is editing with a conflict of interest which we generally try to avoid here. Instead, you can make suggestions on the article's talk page, so that one of the editors who is watching the page can implement them. Thanks. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:10, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Lists of intersections, crosswalks and traffic lights

Some of our articles about New York City streets and avenues include long lists of every intersection along the street, including whether it's controlled by traffic lights, and mid-block cross walks. These lists are largely trivia and aren't encyclopedic. The list of intersections might be encyclopedic (but surely a map is a better way to express this) but the traffic lights and cross walks surely are not. Wikipedia is not a GPS nor is it a travel guide. I propose that we stop adding these lists to street articles and remove them from articles where they already exist. (See, for example, this). Pburka (talk) 21:47, 21 April 2013 (UTC)

We could put it in another article, just for reference. Like this one. Epicgenius(talk to mesee my contributions) 01:31, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
What encyclopedic purpose would that serve? Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information. Users wishing to navigate Manhattan should use a map, such as Wikimapia. Pburka (talk) 01:58, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
A list of intersections is encyclopedic because it shows which streets intersect with what. Just saying... Epicgenius(talk to mesee my contributions) 13:13, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

This article looks really terrible, but the primary author is resisting any changes I make to improve the readability & layout, so I'm backing off. Other eyes may want to take a look. There are also plagirism issues: large blocks of text, suitably credited, but somehow "abridged" and "rearranged" (primary author's words) despite being presented as direct quotes, with no indication (via ellipses, etc.) what changes were made to the text. The amount quoted also seems excessive - even when the text is not still copyrighted, we discourage large amounts of direct quoting instead of paraphrasing or re-writing the information. Incorrect URL

For a brand search for the Ritz-Carlton hotel (The Ritz-Carlton Central Park), the Hotel St Moritz is showing up in the knowledge graph, pulling from Wikipedia. Could you please seperate the two Wiki pages?

The URL of this page is http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Ritz-Carlton_New_York_Central_Park, when it should be http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Hotel_St._Moritz. All of the content is about Hotel St. Moritz. Shouldn't there be a unique page about The Ritz-Carlton, Central Park? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 162.130.196.121 (talk) 18:16, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

I've added a bit of info about the Hotel St. Moritz to the Ritz-Carlton article and changed the Ritz-Carlton New York Central Park page to link to the parent company instead of the building. Pburka (talk) 22:14, 18 October 2013 (UTC)

Untagged articles

There are a lot of articles relevant to WP:NYC that are not duly tagged with the project template. I just added 2009 World Series and 1926 World Series, both of which were partially hosted by Yankee Stadium. Does anyone else want to help me go through Category:New York City and all its subcategories adding the project banner? This is definitely a task for AutoWikiBrowser. – Muboshgu (talk) 15:40, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

I'd be happy to help, I've wanted to do similar tasks with AWB before but wasn't sure how... so just let me know! If it's an extreme amount of work, I know you can request AnomieBOT to handle it. — MusikAnimal talk 16:30, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
Great! I've been doing similar tagging for other projects through AWB by compiling a list based on the relevant category and its subcategories, converting to the talk page, and then having a "skip" defined as when AWB finds the project banner. It might be best to get a bot on it, actually. I looked at it a while ago and it is literally thousands of articles. – Muboshgu (talk) 16:51, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
Cool, well I was looking at the WikiProjectTagger info on AnimoeBOT's talk page, and looks like including all subcategories is not generally done anymore, I guess that means it's not allowed to recurse, and that we should instead provide the list of categories to process. In addition, those categories must be approved by the WikiProject, shown via a linked discussion. Do we have that? I guess we could publicly approve all of them here, unless someone objects... I don't see why any child category of Category:New York City should be excluded from this WikiProject. — MusikAnimal talk 17:56, 25 October 2013 (UTC)

Commercialization of Macy's Parade coverage by NBC

I think it would be interesting if any insiders could share what NBC charges to feature particular floats and have the hosts read scripted commercials for those products, such as Kool-Aid and McDonalds. Newsboy0224 (talk) 16:05, 28 November 2013 (UTC)

Manhattan-centric infobox photo

I apologize if this has been discussed before, but I noticed that the infobox photo in the New York City article only contains one image from outside Manhattan. (Plus the Statue of Liberty). There are no photos of Brooklyn (except for a sliver in the Brooklyn Bridge shot), or the Bronx or Staten Island. I realize there are simply more landmarks in Manhattan, but this struck me as a bit inaccurate. Thoughts? Delaywaves • talk 03:50, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

If the Brooklyn Bridge counts as being in Manhattan, then it counts as being in Brooklyn as well. The Statue of Liberty is in New York Harbor, so of 7 images, only 4 are actually of Manhattan, per se. I agree that a picture from the Bronx or Staten Island would be a nice thing. What instantly identifiable iconic landmark from those boroughs would you suggest? Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:29, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
Since the vast majority of the city consists of apartment buildings and houses, I thought that a simple streetscape photo belongs somewhere in this infobox. I couldn't find any great examples, but maybe something like this, this, or some kind of aerial view. Delaywaves • talk 15:09, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
Most American cities consist of apartment buildings and houses, so I can't see the value in including them in an image which is supposed to identify what's unique about New York. Plus street and streetscape photos tend to be very boring. Beyond My Ken (talk) 15:26, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
Same goes for aerial views - seen one, you've pretty much seen them all. They have value when they're presented at a large enough size to see some details, but in an infobox, as part of a collage of images, an aerial view will have zero impact. Beyond My Ken (talk) 15:29, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
And, we have the Manhattan skyline. Beyond My Ken (talk) 15:29, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
For the Bronx, what about Yankee Stadium or the New York Botanical Garden? (Although including Yankee Stadium could cause Mets fans to feel left out, I guess.) Pburka (talk) 18:18, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
Yes, Yankee Stadium would fill the bill, but there's nothing instantly recognizable about the Botanic Garden, or the Bronx Zoo, for that matter. Beyond My Ken (talk) 18:35, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
When people think about NYC, they usually only think about Manhattan. Not many people would recognise the hills of Staten Island as being part of New York City at first glance. And a tourist would have to look closely to see that this photo was taken in the city. Epicgenius (talk) 20:46, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
True, but my entire point is that for a city of 8+ million people, there ought to be something in the infobox photo that goes beyond the obvious touristy/famous locations and portrays what 90% of the city actually looks like. But I agree that the photo must be somewhat interesting, not just a shot of an average city block. Delaywaves • talk 23:46, 1 December 2013 (UTC)
I actually don't think that's a very good point at all. What makes a city unique -- and identifiable -- is not its prosaic residential or business neighborhoods, which tend to look remarkably similar from one city to another, but the things that make the place special and memorable in the mind of the visitor, resident or casual inquirer. If we were to go with your conception, then all city articles would feature images of apartment buildings and office towers in their infoboxes, but those are simply the background from which the really notable things pop out. The infobox image needs to feature the instantly identifiable and iconic places of a city. After all, it's not a sociological essay or a political tract on egalitarianism, it's an infobox which synopsizes the information about the subject, both textually and visually.

In every city that's ever existed, the majority of places are fairly unremarkable; it's the tiny minority of really special places which serve to define the image of the city. The infobox needs to show them. Beyond My Ken (talk) 04:37, 2 December 2013 (UTC)
