WP 1.0 bot announcement
This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:42, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
Wikipedia requested photographs in Queens
Hmm, this seems rather a quiet Project; maybe it should absorb or be absorbed into a busier one. Anyway, in the past few hours while I was processing some Manhattan pix for upload soon (nothing that is much sought; just snowy pictures I liked, a news pic of a fire scene, and a better shot of a statue than Commons already has) I noticed two of my watchlisted articles slipping into the new Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Queens. Good work. Surprizing it has only half a dozen articles for places too widely scattered for me to snap up half of them in an afternoon bike ride. Presumably many of the topical requests (subway stations or whatever) have not yet been entered in this cat; surely there are at least five times as many unillustrated articles in the longest Boro as have been categorized as yet. Perhaps this kind of category should have links to and from the corresponding Commonscat for quicker hopping back and forth to compare. Ho, hum, too sleepy now to say anything more intelligent; nighty night. Jim.henderson (talk) 06:38, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
Manhattan Chinatown
Why is the Manhattan Chinatown article listed as only mid-importance in the New York City Project? I would question this and propose that it be upgraded to a higher importance....--Dpr (talk) 10:54, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
Wikipedia requested photos in the Bronx, or in The Bronx
When we use template {{reqphoto}} with a Bronx argument, The Bronx is not mentioned in the box that the template puts at the top of the article's talk page. Assuming it was a bug in the template, having to do with the "in" name leading with a miniscular, I created a Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in The Bronx with a capital T. That didn't show in the talk page, either, so I forgot about it.
Now my inspection reveals that The Bronx is the only Boro without a subcat in Category:Wikipedians in New York City. Since the location indentifier in the talk page notice always points at a location category of the Wikipedian tree, this is probably why the location isn't showing in the talk page. So, if I have this time reached a correct conclusion, what we need is for some Wikipedia editor to admit to being a Bronxian. Well, one other thing: Capitalization. Is the capital T correct? About a quarter of the subcats of Category:The Bronx that include the word "the" have it capitalized; the rest not. Alas, we cannot assume that a three quarters majority are always right. Irving Plaza / Rock Hotel
I have been doing some work on The Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza sorting out refs after a new editor posted OR about the Rock Hotel efforts there in the late 80's. Going through the NYT archives turns up a great number of refs telling a fascinating story going back 120+ years which will take a little time to sort out. I'm quite happy to do the work myself, but if anyone else feels like joining in they'd be welcome. Rock Hotel seems notable in its own right so I've initiated a project here. Signpost
Hello! I'm Belugaboy, and I'm with the Signpost. Recently, I've been doing reports about large cities in the U.S., but I haven't done WikiProject New York City yet. Has this project ever been featured before? If not, I would like to do an interview with the coordinator[s] or most active member[s]. Thanks!
Photos required from NYC
I am currently working on many various articles for which I require photos from around the world. I am currently requiring photos from NYC for these articles, and I was hoping that this message would reach a photographer who can take the photos for me. The photos I currently require are listed at User:Russavia/Required_photos#New_York_City. If any photographers can assist with this, I would be most appreciative. Please leave any comments or questions for me on my talk page at User_talk:Russavia as I am unlikely to read replies. Thanks in advance for any assistance which can be provided. Which article gets the boundaries wrong? Morningside Heights or Upper West Side
Please see my post at Village Pump Miscellaneous regarding the boundaries between Morningside Heights (says its southern boundary is 110th) and Upper West Side (says its northern boundary is 86th). Thanks. 128.59.179.81 (talk) 00:29, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
- New York City neigbborhoods do not have officially defined boundaries, so it's complicated, but I'd say that the Morningside Heights article is more correct -- the Upper West Side certainly extends past 86th Street. I'll try to find a citation. Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:50, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
- I've responded more fully on the VP: basically, Morningside Heights is part of the UWS, which goes to 125th St. MH starts at 110. (This according to the Encyclopedia of New York City, a comprehensive reference work.) I've edited both articles to conform with each other. Beyond My Ken (talk) 01:12, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Chinatown - Which one?
I found: "Funeral for Chinatown's godfather." Associated Press at Houston Chronicle. Saturday August 20, 1994. A19.
But which Chinatown is it talking about? Is it the Manhattan Chinatown? WhisperToMe (talk) 22:05, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
- Is there another Chinatown in New York City? Beyond My Ken (talk) 22:58, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
- New York City has many Chinatowns. There is one Chinatown in Manhattan, but there are others in other boroughs. WhisperToMe (talk) 23:11, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
- I have no doubt that there are other predominantly Chinese neighborhoods in the city, but are they called "Chinatown"? Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:14, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
- To answer my own question: apparently yes -- there seems to be a Chinatown in Brooklyn and one in Flushing. Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:16, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
- Judging by this NY Times article, the "Chinatown" being referred to is Manhattan's. Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:19, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you for finding that! I added Ong's death to Chinatown, Manhattan WhisperToMe (talk) 23:32, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Further help at Bronx High School of Science#Notable alumni
There is some continuing problems with this article. Here is the short if it:
- There is a lengthy (75-100) person list of notable alumni. I made the recommendation to have it split off into a separate list. That was done, and it is substantially expanded and referenced.
- The original list was deleted from the article. Left behind was a summary and a link to the stand alone list.
- An editor is not allowing the original list to be deleted, citing among other reasons, WP:SIZERULE does not permit the article to be split, and that (quoting) Forked-off articles generally are much less read than main articles, so I feel strongly that this article needs to have the significant names here.
I do not find any of these arguments compelling. I have advised this editor that if he feels this long list really belongs in the article, then the stand along should be sent to AFD. The editor in question does not want to do this, and feels that it is acceptable to have the stand alone list and the other list within the article. As noted above, there was an RFC which did not break the deadlock on this issue. My original involvement with the article was in a response to rate the article, and at this point I would think there are problems with further evaluation moving forward until this deadlock is resolved, one way or the other. I would appreciate any and all editors taking a moment to peruse what has been going on with the article, and weighing in at the talk page. LonelyBeacon (talk) 18:20, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Would someone please take a picture of the Charging Bull and upload it? It's one of the most photographed objects in the world, and Wikipedia doesn't have a picture, due to licensing problems. Thanks. --John Nagle (talk) 18:34, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- I'll try to get down there this week, but since it's a bit off my usual stomping grounds, don't let me inhibit anyone else from taking a shot. Beyond My Ken (talk) 19:00, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
- Well, partial success. I did go down to Bowling Green, but, unfortunately, the volume of tourtists having their picture taken with the bull was such that I couldn't get a good shot of it -- so I took pictures of the tourists crowding around the bull instead. When I got home, I found a good usable image on Flickr and uploaded it to Commons and added it to the article, and then added my tourist shots as well. I've also cleaned up the article and removed the cleanup tag. Beyond My Ken (talk) 20:51, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
- However, although the image passed its Flickr review, it's been marked for deletion on Commons because of the lack of specific freedom on panorama in the US. However, since the statue sits on public property, owned by the City of New York, I do not believe this is applicable. Anyone wishing to express an opinion on the deletion can do so here Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:01, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
- Also, the person who nominated it for deletion on Commons removed the image from the article. I have restored it, as until it is deleted (if it is), it is usable for the article. Comments to the editor involved may be left here. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:17, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

Mosque controversy
At Talk:Cordoba House the mosque was rated "low" on importance for this wp. Given the coverage and statements by NY papers and politicians, I'm finding that questionable. Can someone take a look, with an eye as to whether that rating should be raised? Tx.--Epeefleche (talk) 01:05, 5 August 2010 (UTC)
