Newspaper circulation

I didn't really know where to ask this, but this project seemed like it could handle my question. I've been working on bringing the Meridian, Mississippi article up to GA status, and one of the issues brought up in the GAN is that the circulation given for The Meridian Star, the city's only daily newspaper, is not dated. In fact, there are several numbers floating around on the internet, all of which are undated, and none of which are equivalent. Is there some central location or agency that publishes dated circulations of newspapers? The circulation is only about 16K, so it's a very small newspaper (for a very small city), so that makes it even harder to find information about it. In fact, the entire Meridian Star article is pretty much unsourced. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 03:35, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Disability in the media is a new article created by members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Disability. We would welcome participation from members of this project. The article is intended to be an overview of the way the media deals with topics related to disability. It is just a rough stub at present so there is a lot of scope for expansion. Paddlesworth - spoof newspaper etc - help needed

Today an internet spoof has been launched based on Paddlesworth a small village in Kent (see Guardian report & fake newspaper. It is likely that this will lead to disruptive edits to the village article & I would welcome the help of others in keeping an eye on it. I think wikipedia should probably have an article on the spoof (once there is enough coverage) but we need to inform readers what is real & what is spoof - I'm not sure of the best way to do this & I would appreciate any help.— Rod talk 10:09, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

Media event article needs attention

I found this article while looking for information on the social impact for media events but this article needs a lot of attention from someone knowledgeable in the field. I flagged the talk page template "as needs" attention but not sure who sees that flag. Good luck with it.

P/S: If you have any good sources that discuss the social impact of a global media event I can use as background for a similar section in our Chilean miners rescue article, or want to help us make that section more academic then it is now, I would truly appreciate it. Sources for basic facts about UPI's history

UPI and journalism generally are way outside of my usual interests. I just stumbled on this article. Its history section had never been properly footnoted and, as a result, was done away with, so that the basic facts of UP's origin and 1958 merger to become UPI were missing (though paradoxically a section header still announces "Creating UPI" while offering no information on that subject). See the article history and talk page. My point here isn't my disagreement with the editor who wants the whole section removed under WP:BURDEN vs. my more patient approach to getting ideally written and footnoted articles to emerge from the crowd (though any help here would have the added bonus of solving that disagreement). It's simply that I generally work to footnote articles about Ancient Greek, and I'm hoping someone in WikiProject Journalism might want to work closer to their own comfort zone to footnote this article about a major news agency. It's a shame for the article to be missing the basic facts in this way. Wareh (talk) 00:16, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

User:Urbanhistorian has been adding what appears to be every single thing published by National Tribune. Since, AFAIK, that's not the objective of the page, I've messaged him about it. I've gotten a "go pick on Canada" response, but the listing remains, & appears to be growing. Am I so wrong about deleting it? Also, there seems to be a sense of WP:OWN at play. Unreferenced BLPs - the final surge

Since early in 2010, many editors have assisted in the referencing or removal of over 90% of the Unreferenced Biographies of Living People, bringing the total down from over 50,000 to the current 4,861 (as of 16:00, 1 June 2011 (UTC)). Thank you for all of the work you've done to date, but we are now asking for your help in finishing this task. There are two main projects which are devoted to removing UBLPs from en.Wikipedia:

All you have to do is pick your articles and then add suitable references from reliable sources and remove the {{BLP unsourced}} template. Notability of news sources

I've run across ‎Wisconsin Reporter on new page patrol and I'm not sure about its notability. Additionally, the organization belongs to Statehouse News Online, a network of similar "news" organizations. Besides notability, the pages feel spammy to me. Several have/had links to the websites in the lede. As there's no notability guideline specifically about news sources I thought I'd come here for help. The actions of these websites seem decidedly bias to me which makes me think the articles' content may also be bias especially since the author has made statements like this. I'm looking into filing a report at WP:NPOVN but until then, I thought I could use some help assessing notability of Statehouse News Online and the other articles in that network from people who actually know something about journalism (because I sure as hell don't). I should note, I'm not saying that a news source having an admitted or omitted bias is a problem. I'm only saying it's a problem if that bias somehow makes the article bias. If we removed every news source that someone thinks is bias from Wikipedia, we may not have any news sources on here anymore! OlYeller21Talktome 21:45, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

Over at the WP:CRIC cricket project, I've created an article on the chap above, who played 82 first-class cricket matches in the first decade of the 20th century. A little later on, he became editor of the Daily Mirror at a particularly low point in its history, but I have no decent sources of information on his career in journalism or the circumstances of his departure from the Mirror, or on what he did afterwards. Does anyone have any ideas? At WP:CRIT someone has kindly provided a list of potentially relevant books that members of this project might just possess. Thanks. I'd like to invite anyone involved with this project to help out with a project I have been working on related to C-SPAN. The C-SPAN Video Library has thousands of landing pages about specific individuals who have appeared on the network, and Wikipedia editors have recognized the value of including these in External links by creating Template:C-SPAN and adding a relevant parameter in Template:CongLinks.

Unsurprisingly, however, the C-SPAN Video Library link is missing from many articles, including a few that may surprise: George H.W. Bush for one, and Edward Kennedy for another. I work with C-SPAN's media team (I helped bring their main article up to GA status earlier this year) and I suggested that I find as many gaps as possible and then seek to invite other editors to help fill them. They agreed. To this end I have started a project page in my own user space to identify pages where it is missing and make available the specific markup text necessary to include that link, and keeping whatever relevant markup was there before. You can see the first few I have located here, and more will be posted soon: User:WWB_Too/C-SPAN_ELs

Hi. I've been working for some months now on taking this article, which falls into your WikiProject, to FA status. I was wondering how you allocate your "importance" tags.

Agnew is pretty much a household name in the UK, as the longstanding BBC cricket correspondent, and one of the two radio commentators involved in "the greatest sporting commentary ever" according to a BBC poll; he has also been described as "one of the most highly regarded cricket ­commentators in the world." Probably what it is currently rated at, "Low", as though he's an important journalist, he's not necessarily one of the most important figures in the field of journalism itself, as compared to, say, David Frost or Walter Cronkite. I notice that neither of those have importance ratings allocated. I'd guess they were both "top" importance. Below "top", there's "high" and "mid" before one hits "low". I'd suggest Agnew is probably more accurately "mid", as the leading exponenet in his field. --Dweller (talk) 13:55, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
"Mid" sounds reasonable, if he's that important in UK journalism generally and cricket journalism globally. Cronkite and such could be "High" (if he's recognized outside North America as being important, a question I can't really answer), but I don't think anyone can be "Top" importance, because that's generally for the tiny handful of, well, top-level articles, like for this project Journalism, Journalist, News, Newspaper, Magazine, Mass media, etc. Individual bios don't reach that level of overarching encyclopedic generality, even when they're flagged as Vital Articles or picked for WP1.0 distribution (it's a different kind of prioritization). — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 13:39, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Andrew Orlowski

I was looking at the Andrew Orlowski article and I had concerns about notability when I had a go at seeing if any secondary source mentioned all the stuff he wrote about climate change. He has got hundreds of things on the web by him in the Register but I can't find much comment about him or anything he's written in reliable sources. Is there some provision for journalists who have I guess a reasonable sized influence on the web but I can't find much comment about in reliable sources? Fixed. And a forced-archival bot should never be used on a low-traffic project talk page like this, or it effectively kills collaboration. This template is largely sub-divided on the basis of paper size, but I think 'middle-market' is an incorrect sub-division as this denotes the target market of the paper, rather than paper size. It could also be argued that tabloid can be describing both the size of paper and its audience. As a wider point is there a better way of sub-dividing the papers - by target audience (e.g. middle-market, although this is clearly subjective), by publisher, or perhaps just split into dailies and sundays? WikiWomen's History Month

Adopt a hero?

As some of you know, I've been working for a while to try to increase WP's coverage of world journalists, as a part of both this project and WP:WikiProject Countering Systemic Bias. While the US, UK, and Australia seem well-covered, up until last week, we still didn't even have articles on Steven Gan (Malaysia) and Aboubakr Jamai (Morocco), for example, each of whom is widely recognized as a leading journalist of his country, and whose struggles for press freedom have been regularly covered in world media. I'm glad to say that we now have at least a stub for each of the 100 or so CPJ International Press Freedom Award laureates, which has been a pet project of mine for a while, but working through these has also shown me how much is still missing.

I'm now setting my sights on a new list, the 50 International Press Institute World Press Freedom Heroes of the 20th century. Sadly, even on this one, we still have 14 redlinks, and many more articles in need of cleanup. (There's still some CPJ winners badly in need of cleanup, but I'm trying to prioritize the completely missing first.) I'm hoping to start filling in a few of these each week myself... would anyone like to pitch in on this project by adopting a redlink?

Additions to Bloomberg Markets Article

Hi, I wanted to propose additions to the Bloomberg Markets article. Currently, the article lacks any significant information and has been flagged for poor citations. I have create a built-out draft of the article in my sandbox User:RivBitz/Bloomberg_Markets_Sandbox for review. I would like to note that I work on behalf of Bloomberg L.P. and realize that creates a conflict of interest. My COI has been acknowledged in the Conflict of Interest Noticeboard here to make sure that any edits I propose are handled under all Wikipedia guidelines. Because of this, I would appreciate it if someone else would take a look at my draft, and if deemed appropriate, please implement the changes into the current article. Would someone please review this deletion? I believe that this material ought to be in the article, as it simply describes the content of this publication. Note that the statement is referenced to Commentary (magazine) in addition to the blog Mondoweiss (which appears to be a well-edited, respected blog). But, if the problem is simply the reference to the blog, let's just delete the blog reference and rely on the Commentary reference. It's a pretty good start, but now please pay attention to the irritating little warning flags ("Vague" and the rest) that have been added by irritating little people such as myself. (In particular, what's this about "pythagorean numbers"?) Don't remove the flags until you've fixed the problem; if you genuinely see no problem, ask in the article's talk page. Columbus Commercial Dispatch

Quasi-crossposted from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Mississippi, where there hasn't yet been any response.

A template on its talk page tells me that The Commercial Dispatch (newspaper) is of "low importance" to Mississippi. But its website suggests that it's a solid little newspaper. A pity, then, that the article on it is completely unsourced. Google News doesn't show any news about it. By contrast, Google Books has a dizzying number of hits, but those I was able to read were mere mentions of news stories, and not about the paper itself. I (in Tokyo) have no relation whatever to Mississippi, but perhaps somebody here will have a book about about news media in the US that will say something. -- Hoary (talk) 00:31, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Magazines

His, some magazines (and sometimes even academic journals) are being tagged with talk page banners from this project. I remove those for academic journals, as I don't think that those actually fall within the realm of journalism, but I'm not sure about magazines. Note that there is a WP:WikiProject Magazines (even though it is currently not very active). Indonesian newspapers category

Category:Indonesian-language newspapers contains four entries, three of which are about newspapers that have not been published since the Japanese occupation or the Sukarno era. Is there any reason not to merge this category into Category:Indonesian press?

Newspapers

I wonder if there's any advice, sage or otherwise, editors might have for those of us interested in improving articles about newspapers -- but there's a dearth of secondary sources (and when there are, it's largely anecdotal ... rarely on point).

Newspapers don't tend to write about other newspapers much (and outside of industry trend stories, TV news sites tend to write about them even less). If a newspaper writes about itself, is that reliable? What about in an op-ed or unsigned editorial? Their "about us" page? (Outside of E&P, CJR, Poynter and the like, there's not much sourceage out there -- especially when you're talking about five-figure circulation papers, to say nothing of the non-daily set.)

I'd like to improve articles in these areas. Any advice you could give me that might point me the way of success would be, by me, appreciated. Woodshed (talk) 11:15, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Welcome to the project!
As far as Wikipedia is concerned, any time a newspaper writes about itself -- "About Us" page, editorial, news stories celebrating its centennial, advertising rate cards available in PDF form on its website, etc. -- it is considered a primary source and a self-published source. That does not mean information from these sources is banned from Wikipedia, however.
Remember that the WP:V standard is verifiability, not verified. If you're reasonably sure that a reliable source exists offline, go ahead and add the fact and cite the "About Us" page where you found it. (common example: the Advocate-Advance claims on its website that it was founded January 7, 1923, through merger of The Evening Advocate and the Anytown Advance. Can't find a reliable source anywhere to back this up, but I trust the self-published source and am reasonably sure that I'd find documentary proof in the 1923 microfiche archives of the Advocate-Advance). Also note that under WP:SELFSOURCE, an organization's own homepage or self-published documents are considered reliable sources as long as they are presenting noncontroversial material in a factual way.
Some other places to look:
1. Alongside newspapers in large or midsize markets you are likely to find alternative newsweeklies, business journals and community weeklies -- sometimes even smaller dailies -- that love to point out their larger competitors' foibles, including any sort of scandal, ownership change, layoffs or decline in circulation/profitability. These are generally considered WP:RS reliable secondary sources. Often their "media watch" column is a web feature or part of their blog; such blogs, when they are part of a news organization's online presence, are generally also considered reliable secondary sources.
2. There are also, in some areas (Boston, Seattle and British Columbia come to mind) robust online-only sources dedicated entirely to analysis of the local media scene. These are often run by former print journalists or journalism professors. They look like and are frequently touted as "blogs", which we tend to avoid on Wikipedia, but a close reading of WP:USERGENERATED yields this: "Self-published material may be acceptable when produced by an established expert on the topic of the article whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable third-party publications". So cite away.
3. For papers owned by corporations, don't forget to search for information about the parent company. If the company is publicly traded, its annual reports can be useful for merger/acquisition news. Even if not, sometimes a competitor/third-party source in a different market will write about the company's woes in general, and give the specific example of some scandal/trouble at the property you're writing about. I recently found that the best source I had for a newspaper sale in Illinois was from a completely unrelated newspaper in Ohio that happens to compete with other newspapers owned by the purchasing company.
4. Here in the United States, and I suspect elsewhere in the anglosphere, it was quite common in previous generations for local historians or historical societies to publish books on their town's or county's history. As local newspapers were a huge part of the 19th-early 20th-century development of US settlements, these published books represent a treasure trove. Some of them have been scanned into Google Books.
5. Another hit-or-miss source is the industry newsletters published by local press associations (good for editor/publisher changes, mergers, milestones, circulation figures, layoffs, awards, etc.). These are often little better than glorified press releases, but technically speaking, they do represent a third party with editorial oversight. I've used the Hoosier State Newspaper Association and New England Newspaper & Press Association as sources in the past.
I've long been of the opinion that this WikiProject needs something -- a policy? an essay? -- to address how the points you raise affect sourcing and determinations of notability for articles about newspapers. When a newspaper writes about itself, particularly in a bylined news story, yes, it is technically "self-published"; but it's also (usually) subject to the same editorial process and standards as when a newspaper writes about any local business. I'm not naive enough to think that newspapers will write many negative stories about themselves, but the positive information they do write should be treated as a reliable source. I have a feeling that the editors of this project probably have the most experience in dealing with such issues, and I think their input in the discussion on the article talk page might be particularly useful and welcome. Articles on websites

Hello, folks! Articles on news / entertainment media typically describe in detail the "original media" (television channel, radio station, newspaper, magazine), but usually include very little about their websites. In the case of United States media, there are individual articles like nbcnews.com, espn.com and foxsports.com, articles like Forbes, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times include decent sections, but there is little or nothing about the websites of ABC News, CBS News, Fox News, Bloomberg, USA Today and The Washington Post. Post-Journalism

I'm not a member of the project, but want to relate an incident. I was having an email exchange with a former journalist-now-blogger, accusing him of using sensationalist meta-stories (e.g. why someone was canned at a particular news organization) to exploit his readers. He responded, "It's post-journalism." I actually think I've heard this neologism before, but it would be nice to have an article about it. (Calling Jeff Jarvis?) Hi, I added in a sentence to reflect it was announced last year, but need to find sources saying it actually happened. I just realized, I need to go through the entire article also to change the wording of his accomplishments to past tense instead of present perfect - EG "has been" to "was." I also found sources announcing Brian Lamb's intent to step down, but not any mentioning that the leadership transition was completed, although that was due to take place in April last year. Given the coverage of the retirement by the New York Times, the Associated Press, the Purdue University paper (his alma mater) and the inclusion of this event on the Official C-SPAN timeline, would you feel comfortable making the changes I requested? I'm particularly concerned about correcting the error in the introduction. As this C-SPAN page shows, Brian Lamb is still Executive Chairman at C-SPAN and I'd like the introduction to reflect this. Requesting peer reviews of C-SPAN

Greetings, WikiProject Journalism members. A few weeks back I initiated a peer review for the C-SPAN article—I'm interested in taking it to FA soon—and I'm looking for editors who might be interested in helping with this process. Avoiding the scandal

It has been claimed (I believe in an article in Salon) that "Wikipedia has more articles on female pornographic film actors than on women poets". This is atually patently false, there are probably at least twice as many articles on women poets as on female pornographic film actors. However up until recently (as in last Saturday) Category:American female pornographic film actors was bigger than Category:American women poets, and it may still be true that Category:Female pornographic film actors has more articles directly and in all its sub-cats than Category:Women poets. It is definately true that Category:American women journalists is smaller than Category:American female pornographic film actors. This may be depressing to some, and be a reason to attack wikipedia on the part of others. However, the situation is not really that dire. It is fairly easy to remedy. There are 4 ways to help. I am going to try to fix it, and am hoping amybe some others could help. There are 3 ways. 1-the most straightfoward way is to create more aritcles on women who were journalists, making sure to include Category:Women journalists or one of its sub-cats with the new article (the people should also be put in a gender neutral subcat of Category:Journalists. I would love to see this done. 2-people could find articles that are on women who were involved in journalism that do not mention this fact, add the information and categorize the women into Category:Women journalists or some sub-cat thereof. 3-Find women who the article mentions they were journalists, but they have not been categorized as such yet and so categorize them. 4-this is the easiest, find women who are in some journalist category, but have not been put in Category:Women journalists or any of its sub-cats.John Pack Lambert (talk) 19:26, 13 May 2013 (UTC)

Image of newspaper

Hello, I created the article Colorado Springs Business Journal and found that there are images of newspapers and journals on commons with the {{Non-free newspaper image|image has rationale=yes}} tag. I tried to upload the image (from here), with that tag. On preview, I saw that the image would be a candidate for immediate deletion because it was a disallowed fair use image.

How might I go about getting an image that would be able to be used without a copyright concern?

Help reviewing revised draft of C-SPAN

Hello, anyone watching this page! I'm looking for an editor (or editors) to review an updated draft I have prepared for the C-SPAN article. Back in late April, I requested a peer review of the article and received feedback from two separate editors. I incorporated a number of their suggestions, and what I did not include I subsequently explained at Talk:C-SPAN. Unfortunately, neither editor has offered any follow-up comment.

The reason why I have not been bold and made these changes: I am not just a fan of C-SPAN, but in fact I am a consultant to the network. Because I have this financial COI, I am avoiding all direct edits to the live article, and my revised version remains in my userspace, here: User:WWB_Too/C-SPAN_(2013_revision)

Since this article falls under the purview of this WikiProject, this is one place I'll be asking. If an editor here is able to review the the changes—and perhaps move them live—I would really appreciate it. Worth noting: my explanation is meant to be thorough, so it will take a bit of time. The Berryesa family was having a party in now Sausalito, when John Fremont, Kit Carson and a man know as three fingered Jack ambushed them as they were getting out of their boat. Journalism: I'm currently in search of two ambassadors who would like to sign on to my semester-long journalism safety/freedom of speech project (COMM 192: Intro to Mass Communication). For this project, students write about notable journalists (sometimes events involving journalists) who have been killed while reporting or killed, imprisoned or sent into exile because of their reporting. In addition to bio writing, students fill in infoboxes or incident boxes for attacks and create maps. Ambassadors will typically field Wikipedia-related questions from students who are mostly in their freshman or sophomore year and offer them help or tips on policy, technical and cultural/behavioral issues. We do work with Wikipedians who are active in this area and on the lists of killed journalists (e.g. List of journalists killed in Mexico) Crtew (talk) 19:10, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
Photography: In addition, ambassadors may want to also consider signing up for my current fall semester Digital Photography course, which is more limited in length (a matter of two or three weeks on the assignment). Students will be illustrating several Wikipedia articles each. They will be finding articles that are in need of illustration or may use current images request categories to get ideas. Some students may want to brainstorm with an experienced Wikipedian. After the photo shoot and photo editing, these students may need help with questions about uploading, filling in copyright forms (easy because they will be the creators), or placing images with captions in an article. This assignment requires knowledge of Wikimedia Commons as well as Wikipedia. The majority of these students should have had COMM 192 (see above) and will have some prior experience with Wikipedia. Disagreement between History of British Newspapers and article 1780

There is a discrepancy in what the first British Sunday newspaper was, and I don't know which is right. On the article "History of British newspapers", it says: "The Observer, first published on 4 December 1791, was the world's first Sunday newspaper." Because this is under British newspapers, it must also be Britain's first Sunday paper. Under the article "1780," it says: "March 26 – The British Gazette and Sunday Monitor, the first Sunday newspaper in Britain, begins publication."

Obviously the two are not in agreement and one is wrong. I don't know how to fix it even if I did know the right answer.--76.123.43.150 (talk) 22:01, 22 January 2014 (UTC)

Hey all! I would like to request that an experienced editor communicate with User:Reedabplanalpcowan, who has edited on the article Reed Cowan. He has openly stated that he is Cowan himself, so I thought it'd be good if there was an intermediary to help allay any concerns of COI as well as to help go over Wikipedia policies in general. His edits do appear to have been made in WP:GOODFAITH, so I'm not concerned about there being any self-promotion or any of the typical concerns we'd have with a COI editor. One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Per Wikipedia's conflict of interest policy, I'd like to request someone update pages for the St. Louis Beacon and KWMU, which merged in December 2013 (I work for the merged organization, so I'm not sure I should make the edits myself). Additionally, the Beacon's logo is out of date; the one current as of the merger can be found on its homepage.

Wonder if anyone can help me track down a newspaper

I'm trying to track down a newspaper known as the Courier operating in London during the 18th and 19th century. I'm working on the article Archer family and the family had connections to this paper, so I'm trying to determine what I can about it. Based on "A genealogical and heraldic history of the colonial gentry (in two volumes)" by Sir Bernard Burke at least one of the owners as a Dr. Frost, who married Mary Archer. A long shot anyone has ever heard of it, but I thought I'd ask. Googling brings up a whole list of possibilities and I have no clue on which it might be. I expect it shut down many years ago. Proposed Descendent Project

I would like to start up a new sub-project on the provincial / regional press. There are a large number of important non-metropolitan newspapers (especially in from the nineteenth century) that have no presence on Wikipedia. Should this BLP be deleted?

The article Sarah Gardner, about a TV person, may not meet notability requirements. It would appear to need updating. In addition it is very poorly sourced: two of the sources are articles from the 90s, not online, and the other two are dead links.

Vandalism on Kodiak Daily Mirror

FiveSix times now, I've reverted an IP who has changed the circulation figure for the Kodiak Daily Mirror from 1,900 to either 11,900 or 19,000. As the 2010 Census reported the population of the surrounding Kodiak Island Borough as 13,592, common sense tells me that the latter figures are completely bogus. It's bad enough that virtually every article on my watchlist covering a media outlet serves as little more than an advertisement for the outlet's current owner, and this article is no exception. Trying to puff it up in such a manner rather than substantially improving it isn't making that any better. I went looking for websites covering circulation figures and only found paywalled sites. Help on Hill+Knowlton

Hi there, I'm looking for editors who might be interested to help improve the Hill+Knowlton article, which is a public relations company with focuses including journalism and media. Currently, the article's content suffers from POV issues, as it is focused almost entirely on a handful of more controversial clients and work, while there is little to no information about the company's history and overall operations. Although H+K is one of the largest and longest-established PR companies in the United States, the article's History is just five sentences long, and the only other section in the article, the Controversies section, dominates its content.

On the Talk page, I've proposed a new draft for the article that relies on secondary sources and aims to add more information about how the company operates, and how it has developed over time. I should note: I am working as a consultant to H+K and prepared the draft with the company's input, so I'm not going to make any edits to the article myself. Instead, I'm hoping to find editors who would be interested to review the draft and move the content into the live article if they feel it is appropriate. Hunt does indeed seem to be notable. As often happens on Wikipedia, articles do not appear until someone with an interest in the subject matter creates the article. Given the number of online references to him, I think Hunt would be a good candidate. Perhaps if you started the article others might contribute to it to expand it.DanDavidCook (talk) 21:52, 21 April 2015 (UTC)
I second what DanDavidCook said. (I found one promising source here.) Are you by chance the author of the draft you linked? If so, it looks like you're in a very good position to start a short article. It needn't be very long or in-depth -- for instance, if you wrote one or two paragraphs with a few good citations, with an overview of his career, you might find that others contribute to it over time. Medical journalism

There is a discussion on Wikipedia talk:Identifying reliable sources (medicine) about the use of the "Popular press" or news media.

Wikipedia:Identifying_reliable_sources_(medicine)#Popular_press currently starts with the statement, "The popular press is generally not a reliable source for scientific and medical information in articles."

There is quite a bit of academic research on the coverage of medicine by the mass media, some of which we have cited in Talk.

My reading of the research (and my personal experience as a medical journalist) is that the quality of reporting varies greatly, with the best reporting, for example Science magazine, highly reliable (sometimes more reliable than the peer-reviewed literature), while the worst reporting, for example diet advice in many of the womens' magazines, is not reliable. I usually use the criteria of HealthNewsReviews.

For example: Analysis of health stories in daily newspapers in the UK. "CONCLUSIONS: There are significant differences in the quality of reporting within and between major daily UK newspapers, with anonymous articles being the poorest quality, and widespread reliance on press releases from the major UK scientific journals."

I think WP:MEDRS should reflect that academic research.

Yeah, I used to write for those newsletters at McGraw-Hill -- in the 1970s and 1980s. They had newsletters like Electrical Wholesaling, Nucleonics Week, Biotechnology Newswatch, Inside Ferc, and others. They would charge $500-700 a year, and provide top corporate executives, government officials, and anybody else with a great need to know a concise 8- or 10-page executive briefing every week or fortnight. The beat reporters at the Wall Street Journal, New Scientist and other serious publications used to subscribe and use our (attributed) stories when they were significant, so anything major would filter down into the major media. But it is an interesting journalism niche that I didn't know about until I worked at McGraw-Hill. --Nbauman (talk) 01:16, 1 December 2015 (UTC)

WikiProject English Language

It's rather shocking that this project is missing, though its absence explains why we have so few articles about our language (most of the linguistic material on English is buried as sections, when we're lucky, in general linguistics articles), and why so much of what we do have is riddled with Victorian prescriptivist PoV-pushing and original research. Properly sourced, neutral, linguistically descriptive, detailed, encyclopedic coverage of the language is one of en.wp's most obvious topical gaps. The scope is general, including everything from the Great English Vowel Shift to Quotation marks in English to English as a global language, and various missing articles like major styles of English writing.

I've drafted the wikiproject outline at User:SMcCandlish/WikiProject English Language, including some "Goals" and "Scope" points. Please "pre-sign" as a participant so that it already has a number of supporters (7+ would be nice) when I take it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals in the next day or so. I've not yet created a to-do list for it or other resources (mainly so I don't have to move them later after the proposal goes through).

As far as I can determine, this project is missing because several times in the past, various camps of prescriptivists have tried to create something called "WikiProject English" to PoV-push their version of "correct" English on Wikipedia, and had it deleted at WP:MFD. This proposal would be the diametric opposite of such WP:FRINGE / WP:SOAPBOX campaigning.

I'm a sporadic editor who cannot give this situation the attention it deserves. Searching sources for news sites

Does anyone have any tips on how to do this? I tried template:find sources but the barrier I'm running into is that when you search 'news' on a news site, most of the articles you find are from the news site itself. Is there a way to exclude a web site from the results so that you only see if the site is mentioned on other sites? Ranze (talk) 06:49, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

On google you can exclude specific websites with a minus sign. For example, if you wanted to find other sources covering The New York Times without the NYT website actually showing up in the search, you can use these search terms: "New York Times" -nytimes.com. Thanks for bringing attention to this. It is marginal at best and is written like an advertisement. I've nominated for deletion. I note that it was created by an SPA and is apparently self-promotion. Reliable Circulation Figures for Newspapers

For US newspapers, circulation figures used to be cited from the Audit Bureau Circulation. However, this source is no longer available, and I don't know if there is a good replacement. The Bronx Times

Would somebody from this WikiProject mind taking a look at The Bronx Times and possibly assessing it? The article was recently prodded, but was restored per WP:REFUND#The Bronx Times. Are there any notability guidelines in addition to WP:GNG and WP:NORG which might specifically apply to online newspapers such as this because the subject does not (at first glance) appear to be notable enough for a stand-alone article. The article has been tagged with maintenance templates since January 2014 so it may simply be a case of WP:NRV. Anyway, any suggestions for improvement or ideas about where to find better sourcing would be most appreciated. Feel free to add them to the article's talk page. Opinions are needed on the following matter: Talk:Milo Yiannopoulos#RfC: Should the article include text/sources analyzing Yiannopoulos's statements on pedophilia?. A permalink for it is here. Help with Matt Lauer issue in NBC News

Hi,

I've proposed new language on the NBC News article regarding the description of the Matt Lauer sexual misconduct allegations. Right now, the only mention is criticism of NBC, even though others said NBC handled the situation well.

The section on " Media coverage of the Bengal famine of 1943" is already too long in an article that is generally concerned with wholly separate issues. The issue of media coverage, unlike such things as the origins of the famine, is not directly germane to the famine itself, except with respect to the Statesman articles and their very direct and very tangible impact... I also shortened the "other media" section a tad and merged it with media (and properly so)...

To aid in this effort, I have started a new article, Media coverage of the Bengal famine of 1943, and will cleanup/extend bit by bit as per meta:eventualism.

  • There was of course a great deal of political hay-making going on in the media, as nationalist papers hammered the UK govt. Publications such as The Statesman, Amrita Bazar Patrika, Biplabi, and the Indian Communist Party's organ, The People's War, defied gov't arm-twisting and outright censorship; even the word "famine" was banned as a political tactic...this is a journalism major's dream topic.
  • There was of course tremendous speculation – now completely irrelevant, except for brief mention– of the causes of the famine. That blind speculation of the day has been supplanted by modern analyses, which are covered in depth in this article, but they would be fascinating to see in an article about media coverage...

And many other topics to be explored. All of this will total up to really really really significant verbiage – far far far too much for an article that is already large.

I think it will be an excellent article and a fit project for valiant editors to expand and enrich. Lingzhi ♦ (talk)
