Article Improvement Drive: Tallahassee

The Tallahassee, Florida article is now part of the Article Improvement Drive. - Aerobird 02:43, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

Cool. Talk page me if you need help, I live there. SWATJester 19:45, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

Does this mean I should make a better map? astiqueparervoir 19:59, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

ballenisles

On an unrelated note, I'm making the article for Ballen Isles, a major community in Palm Beach Gardens. I need the following done: a redirect to Ballen Isles from Ballenisles or BallenIsles, GPS coordinates, aerial pictures, etc. SWATJester 19:45, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

I think I made a good start, but I got tired. There's Pleeeeeeeeeenty of easily googleable information should anyone want to help significantly expand what could be a feature article someday. SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 07:38, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Florida County Maps

I just wanted to pop in and compliment Bastique for the beautiful and very informative county maps on the county pages. Not to sound intrusive, but are you planning on creating maps for all 67 counties? -Valentino 06:58, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Oh, I dont mind being intrusive. Please please please keep up the wonderful work, Bastique! There are only 67 counties. :D - KillerChihuahua?!? 10:48, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
I'll pile on, too. Very nice job, indeed, Bastique. An ideal way to present locations of places that are more than just a point on a map. -- Dalbury(Talk) 11:40, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
Whoa! Thanks everyone! I need to check this page more often! I've been attacked by several newbies lately...so it was just what I needed to hear! Yes, I do plan on contributing further with maps. Leon County I think is going to be next, considering Tallahassee was the recent Article Improvement Article! astiqueparervoir 16:18, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Okay, Floridians (and friends)! Here's where we can decide what articles need most improvement and what we want to work on! I've created the voting page for the UFAID (Unofficial Florida Article Improvement Drive)! My first nominee is Fantasy Fest. Please! This is fun and productive! Get involved! Lets get lots of Featured Articles. astiqueparervoir 16:46, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Um...howcome every time I add the {{UFLAIDnom}} and {{to do}} tags, I get a speedy deletion candidate remark? SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 18:23, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
Ooops... that should be {{UFAIDnom}}. Sorry about that!!!! astiqueparervoir 18:36, 8 February 2006 (UTC)
Hmm, should this project also be "featured" on the WP:FLA page? - Aerobird 03:09, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

February 12 2006

Congratulations to Port Canaveral as the next UFAID. Cast your vote for the next one! astiqueparervoir 01:58, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

Oh wow, and I just got to '86 on the history today! and went and took pictures this afternoon. I will have to get them loaded somewhere for y'all to decide if any are worthwhile (at least one has to be better than the one we have!) I am so excited. Wow. KillerChihuahua?!? 02:15, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

A few days ago a new user moved the page Timucua to Timucuan indians, which is not necessary. I listed it at WP:Requested moves to put it back where it was, but can someone here do it quicker?--Cuchullain | talk 20:48, 9 February 2006 (UTC)

Jimmy Wales speaking at UFlorida

This is off-topic, but I wanted to let you all know about this personal note:

As you may know (if you've looked at my user page :) I am a student at the University of Florida. At UF, I'm the president of a student group called Florida Free Culture, part of the so-called Free Culture Movement.

Later this semester, we're bringing Wikipedia founder and Wikimedia Foundation chairman Jimmy Wales to speak at UF. The speech will be free and open to the public. Specifically, Jimmy will be talking about universities' role in promoting free culture -- access to knowledge, open technology, etc. We'll follow with a discussion panel of UF students and faculty. It should be a really interesting evening.

Since I think most members of this WikiProject are based in Florida, I hope that some of you (if you're anywhere near Gainesville) will have a chance to come to the event. The date is April 12 (a Wednesday) in the evening. For more information, check the Florida Free Culture Web site closer to the event, or email me. I think it'll be a lot of fun.

Now back to your regularly-scheduled WikiProject. --Tetraminoe 09:00, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

PRueda29 and I have been keeping List of high schools in Florida clear of redlinks. That activity has now been challenged by another user. If anyone else has an interest in the issue of whether high schools in the list should be linked before they have an article is invited to join the discussion at Talk:List of high schools in Florida -- Dalbury(Talk) 23:09, 12 February 2006 (UTC)

Where shopping is a pleasure!

Good morning everyone! I'm pleased to announce the latest UFAID (Unofficial Florida Article Improvement Drive) is Publix. Please, take part...let's make our favorite Florida supermarket into a featured article. astiqueparervoir 13:05, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

I've recently expanded this article I had created earlier and some help from others more knowledgable on the subject would be appreciated. --Revolución hablar ver 01:32, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

New, birdbrained category

I've created Category:Avifauna of Florida. Once that's done I'll do others for the other types of the Sunshine State's wildlife. - Aerobird 04:48, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello. I'm a member of the Version 1.0 Editorial Team, which is looking to identify quality articles in Wikipedia for future publication on CD or paper. We recently began assessing articles using these criteria, and we are are asking for your help. As you are most aware of the issues surrounding your focus area, we are wondering if you could provide us with a list of the articles that fall within the scope of your WikiProject, and that are either featured, A-class, B-class, or Good articles, with no POV or copyright problems. Do you have any recommendations? If you do, please post your suggestions at the listing of all active Places WikiProjects, and if you have any questions, ask me in the Work Via WikiProjects talk page or directly in my talk page. Thanks a lot! Titoxd(?!? - help us) 18:45, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Jimbo at UF -- next week (OT)

Just a reminder: Our feadless leader, Jimmy Wales, will be speaking at the University of Florida next week.

The speech is on Wednesday, April 12 at 7 pm at Emerson Alumni Hall, 1938 W. University Ave., Gainesville. The speech is free and open to the public.

Jimbo's keynote will be on the role of free culture in universities. The keynote will be followed by a discussion panel of UF students and faculty. It's sponsored by Florida Free Culture, ACCENT, and the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

If you're in or near Gainesville, I hope you'll come check it out.

For more information, email me. Hope to see you here! --Tetraminoe 18:41, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Many articles covered by this WikiProject lack photographs. As part of a subcategorization of the requested photos category, there is now a category for Florida articles needing photos - to use it, just add {{reqphotoin|Florida}} to the article's talk page. I have only added a few articles to the category so far, but it would be an easy way to make an extensive list Florida-related articles lacking photos. I hope you find it useful! TheGrappler 09:04, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

For a couple of these, that happen around me, I can go get photos, but for example, for gasparilla that are allready some photos, so what exactly is being looked for? -- Dbroadwell 18:30, 28 April 2006 (UTC)
Hmm, I didn't think I tagged Gasparilla, and I can't find any reference that I did in the page history. If there is a mistaken request then you can just get rid of the tag. If the request needs to be more specific, then when making a request you can say what exactly you are after on the talk page of the article, or even actually making a listing on the main category page if it's important enough. TheGrappler 09:21, 7 May 2006 (UTC)
Got pictures up for WXTB-FM Florida State Fairgrounds Trump Tower (Tampa) Ford Amphitheatre (Tampa) ... and two of those were requested images. Once the state fair hits again i'll get one of that too. Any others in the tampa area that need images? Tagem! -- Dbroadwell 03:53, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Radio Stations Tagged

I systematically tagged the talk pages of all articles in Category:Radio stations in florida noticing that some being tv/radio were already tagged and that some, but not all, were also part of WikiProject Radio Stations. Got started on 970wflaAM by adding a 'listen live' link for me ... as usuall it snowballed. Guess I'm a member now. -- Dbroadwell 18:27, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Florida Portal

Hi Florida people. I'm with WikiProject Kentucky and we have proposed Portal:Kentucky. While investigating other U.S. states states with both WikiProjects and Portals, I found the inactive Portal:Florida. I thought maybe this project could adopt it and bring it to fruition. -- CQ 07:39, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

If you're going to start working on Portal:Florida, better get to it quick - it's been nominated for deletion at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion. Cheers! bd2412 T 23:18, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Florida - um, some help here, people? And at Portal:Florida? Cheers! bd2412 T 21:08, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

Nominate articles for Portal:United States

I've worked for the past month to update Portal:United States and keep it better maintained. Having this portal well-maintained is helpful in making the case for subportals, such as Portal:Florida. Though, I think the Portal:United States would be even better with broader participation. One way to do that is instead of choosing the "selected article" myself each week, if others would nominate articles and help make decisions. (same goes for pictures, though these are stocked up through July 29) If there is anything related to Florida (or anything else related to the U.S. - culture, music, literature, geography, history, politics, ...), please nominate. I'd also like people to weigh in on the nominations and help select what should be featured. Thanks. --Aude (talk contribs) 23:18, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

New "People from (city)" Categories

Hello, everybody. I am the bozo who just recently created the new subcategories in the "People from Florida" category. I thought that some of you might want to know why they were created, and why they often have so few pages in them.

The majority of the states have "People from [state]" categories which have at least 200 entries, sometimes over 1,000. This is clearly an unworkably large number for anyone wishing to use the category for research purposes. In 8th grade in Rapid City, South Dakota, the social studies class asked us to write, over the course of the year, reports on two or three people who were or had been residents of the city. Because of that, I have reason to believe that they could be used and probably are used for research purposes. To make such research easier, I looked at the list of metropolitan statistical areas and basically entered in one new category for each metropolitan statistical area.

I know that many of these categories might well be, in the eyes of you who know more about the cities in question much better than I do, misnamed or otherwise faulty. I apologize for any mistakes I may have made along those lines, and I would welcome any corrections, including deletion, that any of the rest of you might choose to make. With that in mind, I have also generally populated the categories with only one or two names, to ease in the process of deletion or renaming.

I thought you all should know why these categories were created, and felt some degree of responsibility for letting your know. I wish you all the greatest good fortune in making the coverage of your state in Wikipedia of the greatest scope and quality possible, and I hope that I haven't annoyed too many of you by my recent actions. Mess at Cape Canaveral

Somebody moved Cape Canaveral to Cape Cañaveral (place) without any discussion, and then someone else copied the contents back to Cape Canaveral, so that it is all in a mess. It needs an admin to sort it out. Can someone take care of it? -- Donald Albury(Talk) 01:52, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi Donald, it looks like no-one had got to this yet - I've changed it back. I've also restored the changes made while it was in "limbo" state. I'm not familiar with the topic myself, but it'd be great if any Floridans can take a look and make sure it is all how it should be. -- Chuq 15:11, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

Bill McBride and Will McBride

Improvement is direly needed for articles on Bill McBride (candidate) (2002 Democratic candidate for Florida Governor) and the unrelated Will McBride (candidate) (2006 Republican candidate for Florida Senator). Cheers! bd2412 T 19:44, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

{{Florida-sports-stub}} up for deletion

This message is to notify you that {{Florida-sports-stub}} is up for deletion at WP:SFD. It doesn't quite fit with the current naming conventions for sports stubs, and only serves to double-tag other stub articles. I encourage any comments to be added to the discussion over at SFD. Thanks! --fuzzy510 21:15, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Dick Crippen up for deletion

The current stub for sportcaster Dick Crippen is up for deletion here. It would be ideal for his article to be expanded so that his notability can be made more clear. Agne 03:59, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Invite

Wanted to let you know that WP:BIOGRAPHY has added a "work group" called Politics and government, and so wanted to invite you to participate on any biography-type articles. Architecture in Boca Raton

I posted this to the article's talk page, but figured that I might get a better response here.

Both out of architectural tradition and out of the strict building codes and the immense amount of red tape involved in obtaining a building permit, Boca has become home to some very distinct styles of architecture, which have been emulated all around the world. I feel more images would be justified, but am considering creating another page to document this style of architecture. Thoughts? WhoMe? 13:41, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

I just created a new page for Orange County Convention Center. I'm surprised it didn't have one yet. Could we make this a collaboration? It could use some stuff, like pictures, fully-qualified references (which I lack the time to do), and the addition of metric space figures. --Kitch 16:44, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

Cities in X County, Florida categories

People are creating categories of the form Cities in X County, Florida (like Category:Cities in Volusia County, Florida) and putting them inside of the X County, Florida category (Category:Volusia County, Florida), which makes perfect sense. The problem is that the county templates seem to automatically add pages to those X County, Florida categories, so (unless you remove the template) articles on cities would end up both in that category and the Cities one directly beneath it, which is poor categorization style. I can see how having the county templates automatically add articles to the county categories would be helpful, but in this case it is kind of messing us up. Recury 17:29, 18 October 2006 (UTC)

Invitation to new WikiProject

A new WikiProject has been started, and may be of interest to members here. It is WikiProject National Register of Historic Places. It covers all listings on the Register, in all states and territories. Should you be so inclined, please feel free to join. And spread the word to any other interested parties. -Ebyabe 19:36, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 18:58, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Place for cons of florida

I suggested adding some negative opinions of florida (see here) to the main florida article on its talk page and only recieved one response (which was in favor), I'm willing to write the content and find the sources myself, but after skimming florida I didn't see an obvious place for the content. I'm hoping someone in this project could point out an appropriate place. Vicarious 07:31, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

That was awhile ago, wasn't it? Looking the articles on the others states it doesn't seem they have sections for criticism of the state, unless it's some specific issue. I don't think Florida needs to be the exception, especially if all you're wanting to add is generic criticisms from people like Carl Hiaasen, who has made his career by portraying Florida in a certain way. If there are specific issues, add them in the specific sections; otherwise its not very encyclopedic to discuss corruption, evil politicians, and greedy rich people as if they didn't exist elsewhere.--Cúchullain t/c 03:56, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

I wanted to join this group, so I posted at the Talk for members a long time ago. Just now I added my name to members, because I didn't know how else to join. I hope that wasn't wrong. If so, I apologize and hope someone can tell me how I can join. Garnet avi 06:03, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Merger proposed

I have proposed merging Miami, Florida in the 20th century into History of Miami, Florida. I think there is actually very little to merge, but wanted to put this out for comments. -- Donald Albury 11:07, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

  • Agreed. Why have a separate article that mostly duplicates what's in the main one? The other option would be to only have a synopsis in the History of Miami, Florida article, but I think your idea's more appropriate at this point. --Ebyabe 13:42, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 22:07, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
