Map error article on Telihar
Hi. The article on Telihar says it is in Rajshahi, but the map shows in in Barisal.Mccapra (talk) 02:23, 6 January 2018 (UTC)

Khaleda Zia
Someone changed birth year and I searched around. There are sources for both 1945,[1][2] and 1944.[3][4] Which date is correct? Raymond3023 (talk) 15:46, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
- It's entirely possible that nobody, not even Khaleda Zia, knows her date of birth. It is controversial. Wikipedia is not in the business of finding the truth, but of reporting all significant views. This has been discussed several times on Talk:Khaleda Zia, and several suggestions have been made there about how to handle it. Pick one. --Worldbruce (talk) 19:57, 12 January 2018 (UTC)
- That is where the dispute is and picking one date would conflict with other because the issue is controversial. Do you think that posting this on WP:BLPNB would be any help? Raymond3023 (talk) 04:38, 13 January 2018 (UTC)
- "Pick one" of the ways suggested on Talk:Khaleda Zia for presenting conflicting information. The methods differ in the details but share two basic principles. First, concisely express the ambiguity or otherwise qualify the birth date in the lead/infobox. Second, explain the ambiguity in detail in a separate section, Khaleda Zia#Birthday controversy. --Worldbruce (talk) 05:49, 13 January 2018 (UTC)

Can I send invitations to new members for your project?
Hi, I have been working on recommending new members for your project for a while, and have sent some lists to Worldbruce who was willing to help invite those recommended editors. I wonder if you mind me sending invitations directly for WikiProject Bangladesh on your behalf to save time and efforts of yours? Thank you! Bobo.03 (talk) 16:59, 25 February 2018 (UTC)
- Sure, I don't see any problem with that. It would be very helpful for the project to have new members. Best of Luck.Vinegarymass911 (talk) 17:45, 25 February 2018 (UTC)

Mangalkot (ancient sculpture)
May I ask some assistance with Mangalkot (ancient sculpture)? The second reference is throwing an ISBN error and I can't identify the publication in Google or Worldcat. The article appears to be a copy and translate of the one on the Bangladesh Wikipedia. I do not understand "Publication of seafood" in the ref. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gaarmyvet (talk • contribs) 22:15, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
- I cannot find any record of that ISBN, or the book title, or that person's bibliography. I have no more leads! Blue Rasberry (talk) 22:59, 13 March 2018 (UTC)
- Whoever copied it from bn.wikipedia shouldn't have tried to translate the bibliographic information. The book is only in Bengali, there is no English title. Nor does it make sense to translate the publisher name, it should just be transliterated. Books printed and marketed within Bangladesh are often given "ISBNs" starting with 984. To the best of my knowledge no one outside Bangladesh recognizes them as valid, so they aren't really international or standard, but on a Bangladeshi web site you could find this for sale under 9847011201120. --Worldbruce (talk) 06:14, 14 March 2018 (UTC)
I've restored it as an id, rather than a true ISBN.--Auric talk 12:54, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Placename changes and Wikipedia policy
This week, the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation-Reform (NICAR), an organ of the Government of Bangladesh, declared new English spellings for five districts in Bangladesh.[5][6] This news has led to edit warring over the old and new names on Wikipedia.
Policy Wikipedia:Article titles states under WP:COMMONNAME:
Wikipedia does not necessarily use the subject's "official" name as an article title; it generally prefers to use the name that is most frequently used to refer to the subject in English-language reliable sources.
and goes on to say under WP:NAMECHANGES:
Sometimes, the subject of an article will undergo a change of name. When this occurs, we give extra weight to sources written after the name change is announced.
"Extra weight" means that if a old name was common in sources for a hundred years, Wikipedia does not have to wait (perhaps another hundred years) for a greater number of sources to accumulate that use the new name. It does not mean that sources written after the name change are the only ones to consider, or that a week's usage of a new name is sufficient to determine whether it has become the common name. (Particularly when that usage is restricted to some government websites and the news media within that country.)
Name changes, such as Dacca to Dhaka, Burma to Myanmar, or Peking to Beijing, have usually taken months or years to gain wide acceptance. Guideline Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names) explains in depth how to choose among names.
What can you do to help?
- Editors should create redirects from new names to existing articles. They should expand articles to mention the new official spelling as an alternative name.
- Editors should not move articles to new titles until it becomes clear that the new official name has become the common name. Wikipedia:Requested moves explains the process.
- Editors should be careful about changing spellings within articles. Do not change names in a way that breaks internal links, breaks external links, or puts articles into red-linked categories. Do not change proper names of individuals or private entities that have not followed the government's new spelling. Do not change historical names used in historical context. Do not edit war over old and new names, even if you know you are right. (All of these mistakes have been made in the past few days.)
--Worldbruce (talk) 02:40, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- To address issues specific to Bangladesh, we have adopted a WP:BDPLACE, which is an extension to WP:PLACE. These are the five names of concern:
- চট্টগ্রাম Chittagong → Chattogram
- বরিশাল Barisal → Barishal
- কুমিল্লা Comilla → Cumilla
- যশোর Jessore → Jashore
- বগুড়া Bogra → Bogura
- BDPLACE stipulates that, WP:COMMONNAME should apply in these cases. It is understandable that, all government and some local publications would soon be adopting the name changes. It also worth noting that, neither English nor Wikipedia is local to Bangladesh only and Wikipedia English should reflect global perspective. With that, I'd recommend a moratorium on page moves for three to six months so that we can understand how the global community is responding to the name changes. It is likely that, Barishal or Bogura would get quicker acceptance, while Chittagong or Jessore is likely to stick for a while. For the time being we can display a template that clearly notates the name change. We should revisit after the moratorium. Meanwhile, we should create redirects from all new spellings. --nafSadh did say 06:26, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- The Bengali alphabet spellings of these 5 names, transcribe as "caţţagrāma, bariśāla, kumillā, yaśōra, baguḍ.ā". Anthony Appleyard (talk) 08:48, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- There is no single widely accepted standards for romanization of Bengali. You can use the following to compare between different proposed "standards": http://nafsadh.github.io/bnXlit/ --nafSadh did say 15:06, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- The name for Chittagong District and Chittagong Division have been changed to Chattogram, but do not change the name of the Chittagong Hill Tracts as it is seperate from the district and not mentioned whether it's name has changed UserNumber (talk) 10:33, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
I've changed Comilla to Cumilla. An editor did a search and replace and I've been fixing up the article. I requested the file names be updated on Commons, but it doesn't seem likely.--Auric talk 11:32, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- I've also moved some linked articles to support the new name change.--Auric talk 11:48, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- Moved pages: List of universities and schools in Cumilla, List of people from Cumilla, Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Cumilla, Cumilla City Corporation, Category:Education in Cumilla, Category:Populated places in Cumilla District, Category:Cumilla, Template:Schools in Cumilla.
SRS 00 has moved other articles.--Auric talk 15:19, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- Isn't the point of this discussion is to hold on from making moves until we reach a consensus (or decide to adopt a moratorium)? --nafSadh did say 15:28, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- I made these moves when it seemed the obvious thing to do. --Auric talk 15:53, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- Apologies. I see that your moves were made before this discussion was started -- that makes sense, and you have posted these to keep track here. Thanks! --nafSadh did say 16:03, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- Had the name for Chittagong city been changed to Chattogram? Bangladeshis news only mention about name of districts. NOT city. --Sharouser (talk) 08:34, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
- Isn't the point of this discussion is to hold on from making moves until we reach a consensus (or decide to adopt a moratorium)? --nafSadh did say 15:28, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- I definitely only support the moratorium, and, even more - my experience with renames of Ukrainian localities shows that a lot of driveby editors (those who have very few contributions to the English Wikipedia and sometimes do not even speak English) will just move pages without any discussion. If this happens, I would recommend move protection to enforce the moratorium.--Ymblanter (talk) 11:43, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- I think a move protection is implied with moratorium. --nafSadh did say 13:47, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- Multiple categories were moved. Attempts to return it required admin tools. Artix Kreiger (talk) 13:48, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- (ec) No, pages are not protected pre-emptively. We need to wait for a disruptive move (which, I am sure, will not be long).--Ymblanter (talk) 13:50, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
- I think there have been enough move-warring to warrant move protection. That beside the point, I strongly suggest moratorium with move protection and appropriate redirects. --nafSadh did say 15:03, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

A different consideration
I understand why it may be prudent to wait for a few months to see if the new names get widespread acceptance. So the names of places and other related names e.g. institutions etc. should be left as is for the moment. However, there can be a very strong case to at least immediately rename the pages on the districts and divisions. That is because districts and divisions are official administrative subdivisions of the country and hence the correct official names should be the most representative names. Arman (Talk) 08:56, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Armanaziz: I see no one brought it up yet, but WP:OFFICIAL definitely applies here. A similar example, among many others, of a common name being kept as an article title may be found with respect to Gurgaon. mahir256 (talk) 02:40, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Mahir256: Noted. Thanks for the clarification. Arman (Talk) 06:17, 17 April 2018 (UTC)
I want to know something
There is a section named "Things to do". And i noticed two words "cleaning up". Actually what does it mean? I have no any clear idea about this fact. Can any experienced wikipedian help me to know that? Thank you.- Rafi Bin Tofa (talk) 06:25, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
- It could mean a number of things, but one thing it should mean, is to fix the problems in the articles listed at https://tools.wmflabs.org/bambots/cwb/bycat/Bangladesh.html
- That list appears to be an automatically generated list of all articles tagged as part of this WikiProject, which also have one or more cleanup template on them.
- More information about what the cleanup templates mean -- and perhaps what to do about them in each case -- can be found from the links near the top of Wikipedia:Cleanup.
- So for example some of them need sources adding, some of them need grammar or spelling errors fixed, and so on. MPS1992 (talk) 23:38, 8 April 2018 (UTC)
WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject
The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.
Portals are being redesigned.
The new design features are being applied to existing portals.
At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.
The discussion about this can be found here.
Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.
Background
On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.
Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.
So far, 84 editors have joined.
If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.
If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 07:26, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

This article has been deleted thrice I've created this and then it had been protected from editing. Wikibots told me that this page is a commercial promotion for the company, that's why they have deleted the page. I Haven't created this page for any kind of advertisement or commercial promotions. Mahabubur Rahaman
As part of my work on categories, I came across a newbie editor who says they have been paid to write an article about Mahabubur Rahaman, who seems to have run a T-shirt company and then done a bit of IT work. My feeling is that he's probably not WP:NOTABLE but I want to do things the right way; the editor has provided links to eg interviews with the guy but in Bengali which I don't speak. Even with the help of Google Translate I'm unconvinced of his importance and they both seem to have some kind of link to the BASIS organisation so I'm not sure that the media coverage is independent and significant. Could someone take a look please? TIA. Le Deluge (talk) 12:47, 2 April 2019 (UTC)
Its not at all a little bit of IT work. He is working to stop cyber crime. T-shirt work is his business but he was the first man who wrote article on How to start a t-shirt business? in Bengali. He is an ex Chairman of Affiliate Marketing Standing Committee of eCAB (e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh). He is the host of e/f-Commerce Meetup. He is now a cyber security and crime analyst since 2016 and till now he has give Digital Content Protection Solution to a more than 3000 under aged and aged child. If you are Bangladeshi, You will obviously be known to the case of Junayed vs. Nurullah, where Junayed beat Nurullah in Dhanmondi Lake and taken video of it and uploaded on Facebook. After that Mahabub met Nurullah and Submitted the case in Police Station. He has completed 66 legal case submission in different Police Station in Bangladesh where people knock him online to take his expert help since 2016. In 2017, he found a girl in the road and taken her to the hospital. She was burnt psychological disordered. But Mahabub handled her so well and stayed with her at the hospital for 120 days in a row. Mahabub is popular for his Bengali writings about Criminal cases and regular issues of Bangladesh. He is also a human rights activist. If you want to know anything else let me know.

Greetings, it would be good to see a Wikipedia:WikiProject Film/Bangladesh cinema task force, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Film/German cinema task force, or Wikipedia:WikiProject Film/Italian cinema task force. Regards. --Titodutta (talk) 19:54, 29 July 2019 (UTC)
- We should do this if we can, but, we should also consider how many of us are actively working on articles that would fall within the scope of such a portal, at any one time. Many portals have recently been deleted, it it would be well not to waste time fighting deletionists. (Or becoming one!) MPS1992 (talk) 23:23, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
Seeking collaboration/assistance
Greetings to all,
Putting out this message out there to seek collaboration and/or any assistance any of you could offer with regards to two pages: Nawabs of Bengal and Murshidabad and the Bengal Sultanate. Aiming to better the quality of the former to satisfy the criteria of possible future FA nomination and the later to the quality required for a possible GA nomination. I had worked on the former and helped promote it to a GA in 2012, but given schedule with regards to school and personal life I do not see being able to work on these two alone.
Alternatively copying and pasting this on other relevant WikiProject discussions. Looking forward to your response. Thank you! --Tamravidhir (talk!) 07:08, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool
Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.
We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Indian-POV pushing in several articles
A lot of Indian IPs and users are engaged in unsourced POV pushing several articles. Bakarkhani is one such page which has been receiving continuous disruptive edits from such users, and there must definitely be more articles. In particular, Gotitbro has been extremely disruptive with his seemingly nationalist POV pushing, replacing Bangladesh with India in the infoboxes and ledes of different articles. A page move involving Hindustani and Hindustani language
A page move involving Hindustani and Hindustani language has been in the works since 16 January 2020 unbeknownst to this project as far as I can tell. See Talk:Hindustani#Requested_move_16_January_2020. I am posting here as well as in the India and Pakistan WikiProjects, as they represent nations that are the successor states to the British Indian Empire, in which the Hindustani language was one of the official languages. National symbols
I've removed a series of quite extensive recent additions to National symbols of Bangladesh [7]. These have the hallmarks of one particularly prolific sock known as Zeshan Mahmood, who had the habit of mixing in legitimate content with outright hoaxes. I've reverted all these additions, but I'm asking for another pair of eyes to have a look just in case. – Uanfala (talk) 13:47, 17 April 2020 (UTC)
Hello there. This is an invitation to join the 50,000 Destubbing Challenge Focus of the Week. £250 (c. $310) is being given away in May, June and July with £20 worth of prizes to give away every week for most articles destubbed. Each week there is a different region of focus, including one week dedicated to South-South East Asia, which includes Bangladesh, though half the prize will still be rewarded for articles on any subject. There's a potential £120 to be won in total for destubbing on any subject or region of your choice. Help with a new user?
Hi, I was wondering if someone could help with a new user, Justshepu. (I've tagged them here as well!) I saw that one of their most recent contributions was in another language, Bangla (per Google Translate). I also saw that they had some editing difficulties in the past per their talk page and I'm wondering if there's a language barrier here. They know enough English to create a draft for a cricketer, but I was thinking that it could be good to have someone fluent in Bangla reach out to them just in case. That way they can have someone help with translations of various policies. (Also in the hopes they can help add articles to Bengali Wikipedia, since it looks like that site doesn't have all of the articles the English WP does!) Advice for new users
I've noticed that many of the articles I've had to delete recently for advertising have carried the Wikiproject Bangladesh banner. This suggests that newer project members are not aware of the most important Wikipedia guideline, the NPOV rule. Please don't create any draft articles without reading and understanding this rule. You will simply be wasting your time if you do. Deb (talk) 14:18, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Deb: If you look closely, I suspect you'll find that although the WikiProject Bangladesh banner is almost always placed by a project member, it is almost never placed by the author, and the author is almost never a member of the WikiProject. Don't mistake the banner as an endorsement by the WikiProject. The banner serves three purposes: first, to advertise the project to new editors who may be interested in writing about Bangladesh-related topics; second, to put promising new pages that may need help on the radar of Wikipedians experienced in the topic area; and third, to put hopeless pages that should be deleted in the sights of Wikipedians who have the most invested in keeping the topic area unpolluted.
- You're absolutely right that editors shouldn't create drafts or articles without understanding Wikipedia's core content policies (I would go further, and advise new editors against creating pages at all until they've gained considerable experience editing existing ones). But in posting here you're preaching to the choir, and sadly are unlikely to reach many editors creating unambiguous advertising pages. --Worldbruce (talk) 15:13, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

- New Page Patrol needs experienced volunteers
- New Page Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles, including Bangladesh related articles. We could use a few extra hands on deck if you think you can help.
- Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; Wikipedia needs experienced users to perform this task and there are precious few with the appropriate skills. Even a couple reviews a day can make a huge difference.

Rape during Bangladesh Liberation War
A user named User:MSouvik01 is trying to whitewash the evidence of genocidal claims from Rape during Bangladesh liberation war by inserting misinterpretation of sources and original research to the article. Some help needed to keep the article free from biased edits. A.Musketeer (talk) 18:01, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
A user named User:A.Musketeer is constantly vandalizing the page by adding hindu women as the only victims. He also copy-pasted the same text in the lead that already exists under "Hindu victims" section of the page. He is trying to make the article religion biased. Help needed. MSouvik01 (talk) 18:08, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
- Falsely calling my edits vandalism is a form of personal attack. The verdicts of international crimes tribunal shows that most of the victims of the crimes by Razakars were Hindus, that's what makes it a genocide. You are trying to whitewash the evidence of genocidal claims by removing the sources and adding your biased point of view. A.Musketeer (talk) 18:12, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
Why do you keep saying I am trying to whitewash genocidal claims. When did I do that? Did the ICT say that hindus were the only one getting attacked? You are constantly adding things that looks like hindus were the one and only victims which shows how biased you are. You are trying to make the article religion biased. And who is attacking whom? Aren't you the one who started it first? MSouvik01 (talk) 18:23, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
- All the verdicts by ICT says Hindus were the main victims. The verdict against Abul Kalam Azad says, "Azad, a former member of the Jamaat-e-Islami, was accused of collaborating with Pakistani forces in the murder of Hindus, a minority in the majority-Muslim state. In one case, he was accused of killing at least 12 Hindus while shooting indiscriminately along with Pakistani soldiers."[8]. You can check other verdicts as well, Hindus were specifically targeted and killed/raped which makes it a genocide. By denying these verdicts, you are denying the genocidal claims. A.Musketeer (talk) 18:33, 15 December 2021 (UTC)
Help with this AfC would be appreciated, either finding further English-language sources or verifying and fleshing out what is said in the Bengali sources. Thanks! — Charles Stewart (talk) 14:43, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
The wikibio for Major General AKM Nazmul Hasan is currently at AfD. The article has numerous references with passing mentions of recent activity but little on his career. I suspect this is because the sources needed are in Bengali. I am asking for any editors who can read Bengali to look at the present reference 2 to a Government Weekly Gazette to check on what that reference says, to have a look for any Bengali-language sources that are more substantive, and to contribute to the AfD thread. Of course, any and all contributions ae welcome and invited to both the article and the AfD, whether from Bengali-speakers or not. Information that suitable sources cannot be located would be just as useful to that discussion as locating suitable sources as the bio should not be preserved if Nazmul Hasan is not WP notable. 172.195.96.244 (talk) 23:46, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
- His name, "এ, কে, এম নাজমুল হাসান", appears in the last row of the table on page 5 of the gazette. The name, rank, and serial number column translates roughly to: "BA-3443 Temporary Major General / A, K, M Nazmul Hasan, NDC, PSC" In the Staff/Services column is the word "Staff". Then comes date of commission / date of seniority, which is 24 June 1988. Finally is date of temporary promotion: 4 March 2020. Not a lot of information. --Worldbruce (talk) 01:37, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, Worldbruce. Am I correct that the gazette is dated in March 2021? I am wondering why this information is listed in this specific gazette if it is not recording his promotion in 2020? Does the information preceding this table indicate why he is in it? 172.195.96.244 (talk) 07:53, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
- You are correct that the gazette as a whole is dated March 4, 2021. The date above the table that starts on page 5 is 2 December 2020. I'm reluctant to interpret a primary source that requires familiarity with normal practices around gazetting, with govermentese, and with military-speak in particular. As best as I can tell, the lines of text above the table refer to a section of the army regulations, and say something about dates being given next to the names of the following 372 individuals of various ranks. The dates of promotion in the last column of the next 372 rows are mostly in 2020, but some are earlier, as far back as 2007. --Worldbruce (talk) 15:27, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
- Interesting, Worldbruce, and thank you. Certainly the fact that the gazette is a primary source limits its utility, and avoiding OR is important. 172.195.96.244 (talk) 22:19, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
