Another possible bug
I just bumped into another thing with defaultsort that has come up before but I thought I would mention it again. When people have Cadency's like II, III, or IV AWB changes them to Ii, Iii, and Iv. I don't think that it should be doing this and wanted to bring it up for discussion. An example is Jonathan Mayhew Wainwright IV. When AWB processes the article it tries to modify the defaultsort to be Wainwright, Jonathan Mayhew, Iv. --Kumioko (talk) 14:31, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- That is correct behavior for AWB. First the surname, then given names, then other things like junior or a number, etc. The standard is that each word in the default sort should begin with an upper case letter, then the remaining letters should be lower case. It does look funny, but it never displays anywhere and it's just to get the entry to sort correctly within categories. Actually, a better value for the default sort there might be "Wainwright, Jonathan Mayhew, 04" -- that would make sure that entries stayed in numerical order if there were also articles for senior, junior, III, etc. --Auntof6 (talk) 14:44, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- You can read more about that at WP:MCSTJR. --Auntof6 (talk) 14:46, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- That sorta makes sense know that you explained it that way but yes it does look rather strange. --Kumioko (talk) 14:56, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- It is strange. I was thinking to propose that this numbers change to 01, 02, 03, 04, etc. in DEFAULTSORT but I am a bit lazy. This is not the subject of AWB of course. -- Magioladitis (talk) 15:10, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- It is generally a good thing to use the 01 02 etc.. (same for 1st, 2nd ...) but some things, German Panzergruppe spring to mind (?), go into the hundreds. So 001 would be better and cover pretty much everything except the minor planets, but of course would break the existing numbers on rulers. In the same way, but with less problem, Snr and Jr could become 01 and 02 (or 001 and 002). ..the Elder and ... the Younger are already in the "right" order. Rich Farmbrough, 16:29, 7 June 2010 (UTC).

doubled single quotes in Image/File tags
Status | Fixed in the next release |
---|---|
Description | If the name of a page or image has multiple consecutive single quotes, the link will not be hyperlinked or display the image. As a workaround, "%27" is used in place of single quotes in those cases. When AWB tries to apply general fixes to URL encoding in links, the link/image no longer works. See this change for an example. An exclusion for changing %27%27 inside links should fix this. See this for a side by side example of the single quotes vs %27. --Joshua Scott (LiberalFascist) 13:18, 12 June 2010 (UTC) |

This is quite serious, since AWB aborts after this. Workaround is to delete AWBUpdater.exe. This causes AWB to think it is offline, but it starts and can be used. --WolfgangRieger (talk) 16:14, 20 March 2010 (UTC)
I get the same bug on Windows XP SP3. AWB version 5.0.2.0, AWB updater 2.0.0.5, ASP Frameworks: 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5. When starting AWB, the AWB updater starts and reports "there is an update to the AWB updater", asks me to exit AWB, then downloads something and says
- "Problem replacing file: Could not find file 'C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\$AWB$UPDATER$TEMP$\AWBUpdater.exe'. Please close all applications that may use it and press 'Retry' to try again or 'Cancel' to cancel the upgrade."
I say 'cancel' and am back in the AWB Updater window, and 'Close' gives me nothing. Workaround: when AWB asks "Are you sure to want to exit" click on "Go back" and ignore the updater. AxelBoldt (talk) 19:20, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
I've also been having this bug for the past few updates. If I go to the Temp folder, I see that the AWB$UPDATER$TEMP$ folder is present, but empty. I think another workaround that worked for me was to kill the AWBUpdater program and proceed with AWB, but the better approach is to download the new version manually until this bug is resolved. —Ost (talk) 18:07, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- I am also having the same problem on one of the computers I use. When starting AWB 5.0.2.0 I get "There is an update to the AWB updater" message and the program launches AWB Updater 2.0.0.5 which "successfully" updates the software. However when I start AWB again the same thing happens. Renaming "AWBUpdater.exe" to something else prior to starting AutoWikiBrowser.exe gives some strange errors but seems to work. --Jarekt (talk) 15:16, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

I had the same problem for the other direction as well: When I am marking people as alive, Kingbotk doesn't add blp=yes in {{WPB}} if they is present. -- Magioladitis (talk) 07:44, 19 June 2009 (UTC) |

Here are the rules that should be applied:
- If
|1=
is missing from {{WPBS}} then add it. - If
|living=
yes in WPBiography then add|blp=
yes to {{WPBS}} - If
|living=
no in WPBiography then remove|blp=
(whether yes or no) from {{WPBS}}

- Plugin issue not genfixes. Rjwilmsi 20:00, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
- Path of least resistance would be to stop moving it to the bottom - it's not necessary - frankly I kindof prefer it at the top next to the template name anyway. –xenotalk 17:10, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
- Since this removes the BLP banner [8], can we get it fixed as a matter of import? Again, there is no reason for the blp=yes to be moved to the end of the shell template, it's fine up at the beginning. –xenotalk 17:37, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

- The same happens with activepol. The problem is in the regex. We have located. We ll fix it soon. -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:07, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
- Still not sure why it needs to be 'fixed' - the template should just be left as is. It makes much more sense (to me, anyway) for the parameters to go up at the top with the template name rather than at the bottom after all the banners where someone might not know what it's all about. –xenotalk 21:09, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
- This is what is gonna be fixed. This "feature" will be disactivated. But this is not the big problem. The problem that for every action on WPBS the whole page is scanned and not only the template. -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:12, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

- We list {{surname}} as a disambiguation template, which seems consistent with the documentation page of {{Disambig}}. Rjwilmsi 08:55, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
- {{surname}} is a set index article (SIA) tag. The rules for those are different -- they are allowed to have references and external links, whereas regular dab pages are not. Personally, I don't see the need for the SIA pages, except to allow things that aren't allowed on dab pages. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:40, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
- Not sure if you're waiting for more info from me, but some pertinent info is here in the DAB MOS. I quote (emphasis mine):
- Pages only listing persons with a certain given name or surname (unless they are very frequently referred to by that name alone) are not disambiguation pages, and this Manual of Style does not apply to them. In such cases, do not use {{disambig}} or {{hndis}}, but {{given name}} or {{surname}} instead.
- Some pages are mixed, with both name and non-name data, and those could have both one of the name templates (given name or surname) and one of the non-name templates (such as disambig).--Auntof6 (talk) 17:59, 27 June 2010 (UTC)
- Not sure if you're waiting for more info from me, but some pertinent info is here in the DAB MOS. I quote (emphasis mine):

- Both DABs and SIAs can be orphan
- SIAs allow refs
- DABs don't allow refs.

- Thanks! Question: what happens if a page has both an SIA-type tag and a dab-type tag (that does happen). Which overrides? --Auntof6 (talk) 19:40, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
- The dab. Since it's a dab no references are expected. No big deal anyway, it's just an alert. I think we lost more energy on that than we should. We could just remove the alert altogether. -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:06, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Some things on that:
- Recently the consensus for the placement of "Date of..." categories changed. Now "Date of..." cats are placed in mainspace
- BUT Why there is a "Date of..." category, while any Year of death information is missing?
No, it's not AWB's bug. It is user error who put wrong categories in the article. -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:03, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- It is AWB's job not to be wrong. Any "..death.." category indicates that it is wise not to place the living people cat. I can see that "Date of death unknown/missing" (which misses cases where the month is known but not the day) without a "XXXX deaths" is in itself an indicator of an error, whether of omission or commission, but it is not an indicator of living. First bracket is in nowiki tags. -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:15, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know what that means. There are several methods to generate output like "{{0,1},2}", including the use of nowiki tags. But the last change in the diff I posted above does not involve nowiki tags. In any case, AWB needs to work with the same syntax that the parser accepts. — Carl (CBM · talk) 13:22, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

"sic" template doesn't prevent removal of "tm" symbol
This is a continuing problem with AWB. See this diff[14] and four or five times previously. That Phil Bolger article includes a quotation from the author which uses sarcasm to make a point about outrageous waste of fuel in the industrial boating sector. The quotation from the author involves using the words "Suburban™", with the trade mark symbol meant to convey a sense of sarcasm. AWV keeps coming around and removing this 'tm' symbol from the quotation which inappropriately distorts what the author (Phil Bolger) was trying to communicate. We tried to hide the symbol, using {{sic|hide=y|&trade}} but AWB keeps improperly deleting the symbol. How can this be fixed? It is tiring to keep watchlisting this article to protect it from the AWB bot. The timeline is that I asked about the "tm" problem[15] July 2009, and the "sic" template was added then[16] to fix the problem. Except the problem happened again in Jan 2010. (Which I just discovered today). My concern is that repeatedly, the "tm" gets improperly removed from that quotation in the article. SaltyBoatr get wet 19:26, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
- The use of {{sic}} prevents AWB from changing the "tm" with its default settings (general fixes and typo fixes). In the January 2010 case the user must have manually removed it. There's nothing the AWB authors can do about that. If the same user repeatedly makes the error you can report them for inappropriate use of AWB. Rjwilmsi 07:01, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Multiple substitution in talk pages
Status | Fixed in the next release |
---|---|
Description | When using pt:Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/User talk templates, it should change {{template}} to {{subst:template}} <!-- {{template}} -->, but sometimes it also "substitutes" the template inside <!---->, making it like {{subst:template}} <!-- {{subst:template}} <!-- {{template}} --> -->, which renders like {{subst:template}} --> and adds that "arrow" to the end. To make it worse, it does that repeatedly, which adds up to five arrows! Diffs: [17], [18]. – Opraco (talk) 04:42, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

Just to add some additional background I got this error when I attempted to save some banners and assessment info data to a talk page that was blank. So to recreate this error you could go to any blank talk page and try to save a banner or something. Although I think that its good to generate something to the user if they are trying to write to a blank page I think a better error (maybe more like the one that warns of a sic template) might be more useful. --Kumioko (talk) 13:30, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

AWB shouldn't always remove italics from work=
parameter in Template:cite web
Status | Fixed in the next release |
---|---|
Description | AWB always removes the italics from the work= parameter in Template:Cite web. The definition of the parameter is "If this item is part of a larger 'work', such as a book, periodical or website, write the name of that work. Do not italicize; the software will do so automatically." Per MOS:ITALICS, books and periodicals should be italicized, but web sites should not. Therefore, some editors will add a parameter such as work=''website.com'' to offset the automatic italicization of the template. AWB regards this as an error and removes the italics, which it should not do. GoingBatty (talk) 14:45, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Sort keys of categories and general fixes on ru-wiki

To duplicate: | it's easy to reproduce: for example, add "Малый Казённый переулок" to article list in ru.wiki, mark "Apply general fixes", unmark "skip if only genfixes" and start; you'll see that "Казённый Малый" in cyrillics is changed to "Казенный Маlый" in cyrlat mix. What triggered PERSONDATA in this case? I don't see any infobox. Did you just press "Add PERSONDATA" in the context menu? -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:23, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
- Persondata is not added automatically. If you add it manually in error, it's user error. Rjwilmsi 20:36, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
- No I didnt add it, not sure what AWB looked at when it added it. If I had to guess I would say that its triggering off a template or from the categories that are making AWB think the list is a bio. I deleted all the custom filters I had that did Persondata replacement. It tried to add it in the case of a couple of the other Medal of Honor recipient lists as well I just removed them manually. And to comment to your comment RJ yes I am aware that AWB doesnt add it automatically and the only reason I let it process at all was to show you. Character overruns field in 'Number of levels' dialog
Status | Fixed in the next release |

Description | Character overruns field in 'Number of levels' dialog Lightmouse (talk) 13:50, 30 August 2010 (UTC) |
To duplicate: | Select the List comparer. Select source as 'User contribs (user defined number). This produces a dialog with the title: 'Number of Levels'. There is a spinner box field with a label 'Enter number of us'. The last word that appears 'us' is probably 'user' and the subsequent characters are obscured. I suggest that labels don't provide instructions, so 'Enter' could be removed. I further recommend that the label is put above the field so that it can use the field width. Putting labels above fields is a useful design option because labels and fields can be vertically aligned at the left and it almost entirely eliminates the possibility of the label overrunning (or being too far away from) the field. Furthermore, the dialog label 'Number of levels' is about 1 character width too close to the left edge of the dialog. Also, it isn't a number of levels when it is a number of contributions. |

- Yes, "Number of levels" is the recurse box being re-used, I noticed that but it's cosmetic. Changing
- \WikiFunctions\Controls\LevelNumber.Designer.cs(106): this.Text = "Number of Levels";
to
- this.Text = "Number";
will avoid this.
And a quick fix for the other problem
- \WikiFunctions\Controls\LevelNumber.cs(14): label1.Text = "Enter number of user contribs:";
to
- label1.Text = "Number of contribs:";

Is it inside a reference? In 6709 we expanded check for unclosed tags in references too. -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:24, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
It was removed from inside a reference. The question is: Should small be inside references? The letter size is already small in references. -- Magioladitis (talk) 12:20, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
- Also from inside a gallery here. I'm not in favour of small text anywhere (including in AWB's interface!) - it seems less accessible, but I'm not convinced AWB should be removing it. Rich Farmbrough, 05:02, 30 June 2010 (UTC).
- Inside the gallery is correct. Descriptions should not be in small. CHECKWIKI asks these to be corrected. I 'll give a look at the Manual of Style. -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:19, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

- Are there any unclosed tags in the page? -- Magioladitis (talk) 15:42, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

- Haven't tested that, but guess that is correct. AWB is not available to me for a few hours. LilHelpa (talk) 17:51, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
- If AWB will now correctly handle unclosed tags in table cells, then you have probably fixed the Ives incarnation of this problem. However, users should be aware that when AWB finds such an unclosed tag, the rest of the table needs manual inspection: an earlier AWB may have wrongly removed tag pairs. --LCE(LCE talk contribs) 08:59, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
- There is a "Found unclosed tags" warning. Moreover, (most of) the removals aren't done if unclosed tags are found. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:33, 6 September 2010 (UTC)
- I ran across this problem too when editing List of Wizards of Waverly Place characters - AWB noticed that there were two unclosed tags, and then wanted to remove two good pairs instead. (I didn't save the change, so you could try it out.) Instead of trying to get AWB to figure out which unclosed tag to delete, should it just give a warning and highlight the tag in red, like it does for unclosed brackets and parentheses? Scroll bar slider does not work correctly with a large list
Status | Not a bug in AWB, has been referred |
---|---|
Description | I just created a list of almost 600,000 articles and then sorted them alphabetically. Saving the list to a file works fine. Clicking on an item in the list and hitting end, home, pageup, and pagedown all work correctly. Repeatedly clicking on the scroll bar at the right works correctly. Dragging the scroll bar slider however results in the same 65536 or so articles repeated over and over. Pascal666 22:29, 19 June 2009 (UTC) |

Since the last official release of AWB I noticed that when I use in the editfield the scrollbar, to drag the thumb downwards to see a lower part of the article, the dragging suddenly stops, takes a few seconds, and then continues. All other functions seems to work normal. It mostly occurs with longer pages. Romaine (talk) 20:45, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Summary:
- Don't tag disamb articles as orphan Done rev 5888 too. Rjwilmsi 00:24, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
- IF >= 3 incoming links (excluding redirects, only mainspace, not dabs), then article is not an orphan for sure and AWB should remove the tag if found
- Orphans have less than 3 incoming links to themselves or their redirects. These links should not be redirects or dabs.
Current status:
- Tagger will tag as an orphan an article that has less than 3 incoming links to itself or its redirects that there are not redirects. rev 6013
- Tagger will untag an article from being orphan if it has 3 or more incoming links to itself or its redirects that there not redirects. rev 6013
- Tagger can be restricted to linkless pages by an option to the Options menu.
Conclusion:
- Tagging is 100% accurate. If an article is tagged as an orphan, it is an orphan.
- More articles can be orphans. This is the case that some of the incoming links are dab pages.

Description | At the very bottom of this edit [38], AWB moved comments from interwiki lines to a higher position, which made the comments impossible to understand. IMO, all these comments ("interwikis go here", "categories go here", etc.) serve no purpose and they should be removed. Does anyone know, how many pages have this stuff? -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:31, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
- The purpose there was pretty clear: to explain the purpose of each interwiki link, since there were two of them (and maybe not everyone speaks Swedish). If editors want to use comments like that, AWB needs to accommodate them. — Carl (CBM · talk) 13:35, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
- Is it the case that AWB simply reads the interwikis and then re-writes their wikitext at the end? If so, it could add the comments after each link to the per-interwiki data structure and use that info to recreate the comments. It's a pretty routine thing to do in parsing. — Carl (CBM · talk) 13:37, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

General fixes on :sl
Status | Fixed in the next release |
---|---|
Description | On :sl AWB is using :en style of placing ctgr, templates,... in articles in the bottom section. The correct order on :sl should be: 1) templates (or Predloga), 2) stubs (or škrbina), 3) lifetime or defaultsort, 4) ctgr (or Kategorija), 5) blank line, 6) Link FA, 7) IW Klemen Kocjancic (talk) 06:15, 29 September 2010 (UTC) Lifetime is used on sl-wiki, AWB doesn't place it above categories like a defaultsort. |

- Current order for sl is what you have asked for, which is not the same as en. Please link to some diffs where the order is incorrect so we can see why. Rjwilmsi 07:31, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
- More important: We need a link to the sl Manual of Style. -- Magioladitis (talk) 09:32, 29 September 2010 (UTC)
I'm the only one on :sl to be using AWB on mass scale, but I'm not using it, when AWB suggests re-sorting order. The problem is with articles with template lifetime; then AWB wants to change order to (templates -> lifetime -> stubs -> ctgr); it should be (templates -> stubs -> lifetime/default -> ctgr). So I don't allow such changes (and so for can't show you any). Link: sl:Wikipedija:Slogovni priročnik (biografije). Regards, --Klemen Kocjancic (talk) 19:13, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
- That's fine. Had you specifically told us the problem was over lifetime we'd have sorted it out sooner. I'll add support for lifetime on sl-wiki. Rjwilmsi 19:30, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
- He also says that stubs go above DEFAULTSORT. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:37, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
- Is there any chance that I convince people in :sl not to use lifetime? :) English wikipedia virtually deprecated Lifetime. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:23, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
- That's the wrong approach. Rjwilmsi 19:30, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
rev 7208 Support {{lifetime}} on sl-wiki: place it like a DEFAULTSORT (above categories). Rjwilmsi 19:43, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

- Comma and point = point wins. The rest cases aren't that clear. -- Magioladitis (talk) 19:58, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
- Well there's sixteen cases, they dominate .>:>;>, - however if the first punctuation mark is not used as a stop , it should be left. Apart from "." as an abbreviation terminator, any other cases would probably be pathological - for example, "the track was written after Note To Self:." and should likely include italicisation. Rich Farmbrough, 16:53, 7 September 2010 (UTC).
- Here's another case: the clew here is the lower case after the ref. It seems reasonable here to remove the stop, since we are already a little pathological but we might want to take a sample of 100 and see if that rule actually comes across problems. I'll make another note... Rich Farmbrough, 23:11, 5 October 2010 (UTC).
- OK. I am convinced that we can't make clear rules for that. Maybe we could ask for a bot to detect and fix some cases. -- Magioladitis (talk) 13:42, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

- It seems like there is a very large list of fields for the multiple issues template. Just a suggestion but maybe a page like the Template rename and parameter rename lists could be used. Even if its edit restricted I think it might make things a little easier. --Kumioko (talk) 17:36, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
rev 7933 all tags above now are known parameters of Multiple issues. -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:07, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, but it looks like the code has "morere footnotes" instead of "more footnotes". GoingBatty (talk) 22:20, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- Fixed in rev 7934. -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:33, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- Putting aside Kumioko's idea for the moment, I analyzed a similar bug fix and mocked up what I think the fix for this bug would be at User:GoingBatty/Multiple issues bug. Would you mind taking a look at this to see if this is on the right track? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 03:40, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
