Zabreh/Hohenstad

[edit]

I would like to contribute an article regarding Zabreh/Hohenstad. The family Froehlich lived there and I have an Article about one of the members born in this city in 1876. Leo Froehlich. 50.34.114.21 (talk) 00:10, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

English-language Wikipedia already has an article on Zábřeh (also known as Hohenstadt). If you mean that you have an article (published in a periodical or similar) that could be used to benefit the article Zábřeh, then, if the article is published and reliable, you might use Talk:Zábřeh to alert other editors to its existence and availability. -- Hoary (talk) 00:48, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It was me who added the heading to a post with no heading. Maybe it should have said Leo Froehlich and the poster wants to create a new article about him, not merely add mention to Zábřeh. See Wikipedia:Articles for creation, and note the requirements in Wikipedia:Notability (people). New users usually have difficulty making an acceptable Wikipedia article. Timeline template

[edit]

Hello, is there a suitable timeline-style template that could replace File:History of St Mungo's.png? The file is quite poor quality, being raster and having arrows pointing in directions that seem to have been selected out of a hat. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 07:30, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The image is also fully invisible in Dark Mode (gadget version). Matrix, see Template:Graphical timeline for instructions on how to create timelines using templates. The splits in the topic institutions might make it a potential use case for {{Tree chart}} instead. Folly Mox (talk) 09:50, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Approval of a Profile

[edit]

Hrishikesh Pawar, dancer/choreographer's profile is not approved yet ? Can someone help ? 213.220.158.179 (talk) 14:23, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We don't have profiles here, we have articles. It would help us if you linked to the draft, but there is no way to guarantee a speedy review on this volunteer project. 331dot (talk) 14:39, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
IP editor. An article called Hrishikesh Pawar was deleted way back in 2011 as being about a non-notable person. If that's not what you are referring to, please link the draft or sandbox where the current version is located. Mike Turnbull (talk) 21:25, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

upload an article

[edit]

I need to upload a completed article. ReverendRobertMortimer (talk) 14:24, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You must use the Article Wizard to submit a draft for review. New accounts cannot directly create articles. 331dot (talk) 14:38, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ReverendRobertMortimer: I assume you mean that you created an article on your computer using some sort of word processing software. There is no automated way to "upload" such an article to Wikipedia. Wikipedia articles use the Wikimedia markup language and are produced using one of several Wikipedia editors. You will need to tediously cut and paste the contents of your local copy into the editing window of the Wikipedia editor, using the markup syntax for headers, etc., as part of creating your draft. -Arch dude (talk) 15:45, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Furthermore, as you are a new editor and don't appear to have spent time learning how Wikipedia works, it is likely that you have written your draft BACKWARDS, and written from what you know, rather than from what your independent sources say.
My earnest advice to new editors is to not even think about trying to create an article until you have spent several weeks - at least - learning about how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles. Once you have understood core policies such as verifiability, neutral point of view, reliable, independent sources, and notability, and experienced how we handle disagreements with other editors (the Bold, Revert, Discuss cycle), then you might be ready to read your first article carefully, and try creating a draft. Lucretia Garfield

[edit]

I've found some sources reporting that Lucretia Garfield was born in Hiram and others in Garretsville. Could the discrepancy be due to the fact that the village of Garrettsville was formed from portions of Hiram? Which is more correct to cite in our entry? 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 15:38, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When reliable sources differ, the article should use both and report the discrepancy. You as an editor must use editorial judgement as to how to do this. Often, a footnote will be the best/least disruptive choice. -Arch dude (talk) 15:49, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude Thanks for your kind help, but are they two different places? Because our Garrettsville article says that it was formed from portions of Hiram. 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 15:51, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just describe it. Maybe "was born in Garretsville[a]" -Arch dude (talk) 16:16, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude the consistent majority of sources say Garrettsville. So, I just want to know if Garrettsville and Hiram are the same place or not. If I say that she was born in Hiram, I include also Garrettsville? Do these statements express the same concept? 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 16:52, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ip editor, I have found a Google books link that explains that Garrettsville was "carved out of the south west corner of Nelson and the south east corner of Hiram" (page 459) in 1874 (page 460). TSventon (talk) 17:51, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon many thanks for your response. So, if I say that she was born in Hiram or if I claim that she was born in Garrettsville, I express the same concept? 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 18:01, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon Also, for our entry is it better to say she was born in Garrettsville or in Hiram? 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 18:10, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Garrettsville and Hiram township in 1832 are overlapping concepts. I don't have a strong opinion about which is better, but you can add a note as Arch dude suggested. TSventon (talk) 18:26, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
She was born in the unincorporated community of Garrettsville, which was a bunch of dwellings around a crossroads. After she was born, Hiram came into existance, and later the legal town of Garretsville came into existence. There is no need to go into all of these details in the Lucretia Garfield article. Just say "Garrestville", with a footnote. -Arch dude (talk) 18:55, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude @TSventon But, I'm not understanding well. Hiram Township didn't exist when she was born? And Garrettsville was a village or a community? Is it a mistake to say that she was born in Hiram? If it is so, the note is misleading for readers. 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 19:06, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You said you have reliable sources that say "Hiram" and others that say "Garretsville". We cannot know which is correct. You are not supposed to make a choice when sources differ. Just saying "Garretsville" is, by our definition, misleading to readers. Just say "Garretsville", but with a footnote. -Arch dude (talk) 19:16, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude Yes, there are some sources reporting Hiram. But were Garrettsville and Hiram two distinct or overlapping concepts? 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 19:24, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As a wikipedia editor, it is not your job to answer that question. It is your job to summarize what reliable sources say. This is my last word here. You may discuss this further on the article's talk page, but who cares? -Arch dude (talk) 19:31, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude Considering that I can't know if they were distinct or overlapping geographical entities, unfortunately I don't feel like adding a note. Anyway, thanks for your help. 151.82.79.137 (talk) 19:37, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to correct an image

[edit]

The first chemical structure given for glutamate is incorrect; this is the structure for glutamine. When I tried to edit, I found that the entire block is based on a template that seems to link all of the pictures. I only want to remove/replace one of them. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks! Mrcc78578 (talk) 17:23, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

glutamic acid
@Mrcc78578 We don't have an article for glutamate, that's a redirect to glutamic acid. The structure in the chembox is correct for that compound (see thumb here to the right) and more detail is given at Glutamic_acid#Ionization. Glutamine is the amino acid with a sidechain that terminates in CONH2 and the article glutamine correctly shows this. Please be more specific about what you think may be wrong. See also File:ProteinogenicAminoAcids.svg. Mike Turnbull (talk) 21:14, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I looked again. You're correct. 2603:6080:6203:2F8D:E4A7:5FBB:4415:9874 (talk) 21:34, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Shifting table template alignment

[edit]

Is there a way for me to move to the left a template which is by default centered? I'm not talking about the alignment of the text within the template, but the template as a whole. I am specifically referring to the Template:S-rail and Template:S-rail-start. RyanAl6 (talk) 17:30, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Searching sub pages?

[edit]

So I got a load of bits of articles all started half-assed in user space, and I suspect that one of them has something useful for now... way of finding it without opening all the pages? Cheers! ——Serial Number 54129 18:38, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Are you asking for something like this? -- D'n'B-t -- 18:49, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey D'n'B, very clever  :) as simple as a userspace search. D'oh. I thought it would involve SQL:QuarryQuery, etc! Thanks for that! ——Serial Number 54129 12:16, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question about fatality count

[edit]

I'm working on an article about a disaster that injured several people, one of whom was a woman 6 months into pregnancy that lost their child. The source does not count this as a death in its section about casualties. Would we count this as a confirmed fatality? GeorgeMemulous (talk) 22:00, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If the sources (preferably multiple) say it is not a fatality, then it is not a fatality. WP:Verifiability, not truth. Sungodtemple (talkcontribs) 06:20, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
See Omagh bombing. There have been various attempts to change the death toll to 31 because one of the victims was a woman pregnant with twins. However, the agreed death toll in reliable sources is 29.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 06:46, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's not to say a footnote could not be added. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 12:22, 27 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
