Help with article/diplomacy?
I've tagged you on NinjaRobotPirate's page, but I'm posting here and I'll send you an email about the whole situation because it'll take a longer explanation and I don't want to TL;DNR your userpage. Long story short, on the Chris Alexander (editor) page we have some argument about content in the article. Originally there was a controversy section about a piece Alexander wrote for Fangoria under a pen name. There's been contention over whether it was a review or a general article, and whether or not the usage of a pen name is deceptive due to Alexander not outright stating in the article that it was him. We have some fairly heated comments between Alexander and David Pace, who used to write for Fangoria and currently writes for his own website. For the controversy we only have one source, Bloody Disgusting. Alexander argues that the source incorrectly states things and shouldn't be used, whereas Pace says it should be included. It's not a huge mess at this point, but it could get worse and we need a good diplomat to help keep it from getting bad. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 23:40, 23 July 2014 (UTC)

A Good Article (soon hopefully)
I found an article I'd like to bring to GA status. What has to be done to this to make that happen. I read the criteria and have a general idea of what needs to be done, but I really like this article/topic and feel it needs a GA :-) ♥ Solarra ♥ ♪ 話 ♪ ߷ ♀ 投稿 ♀ 06:26, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Solarra. Well, if you've read the criteria then I'm not sure what more to add. My approach is usually to go through the criteria one point at a time, then go through the entire article to see whether it meets that particular point. Repeat as necessary; I find it usually takes me about a week to go through them all, but for such a lengthy article you might be looking at a longer stretch. It can also be an idea - given the current backlog at GA - to put the nomination in before you start work; that way you'll get a reviewer on board earlier and can start working on their feedback (because there will be feedback...). If it's your first time, you might want to see whether anyone at Wikipedia:WikiProject Hawaii wants to chip in and lend a hand; it's always helpful to have an extra pair of eyes.
- Remember that not everyone's interpretation of the guidelines is the same, and don't be afraid to challenge your reviewer if you feel that they're ignoring the guidelines (telling you to change "who" to "whom" when it's gramatically correct is a necessary part of the process, telling you to change "clearly" to "obviously" because they personally don't like words beginning with "c" is not on). Above all, have fun - it's quite an enjoyable process if you go about it with an open, inquisitive mind (which I'm sure you have!). Yunshui 雲水 12:56, 28 July 2014 (UTC)

Protecting transcluded pages
Hi, when you add protection templates to a page that is transcluded, please make sure that the pp- template goes inside a <noinclude>...</noinclude>
. This ensures that the transcluding pages are not marked with the same pp- template, and so keeps them out of Category:Wikipedia pages with incorrect protection templates, because they are unlikely to have the same protection as the transcluded page. See this edit, where your {{pp-vandalism}}

- You're the only contributor - so just copy the code for the table in the "As actor" section, and paste it into the Amrita Rao article, overwriting what's currently under the "Filmography" header there. If you do this, it preserves the attribution, which makes life easier for everyone (otherwise you'll need to reuest a hitory merger between the pages). Yunshui 雲水 20:20, 1 August 2014 (UTC)

Checking Previous Edits of Blocked Editors
Hi Yunshui, on 2 May you (justly) blocked User:194.83.240.157 in response to vandalism. I recently noticed an old vandalistic edit from that IP address and undid the revision. It took more than three months for someone - me - to notice that old vandalistic edit. If I hadn't noticed it, maybe nobody would've ever noticed it. When someone gets banned for vandalistic edits, is the procedure to check that person's recent edits for things that need to be undone? If it is, I guess you missed something; to err is human, no problem. If it's not, and I think it's not, do you know where on Wikipedia I could post to suggest a change in policy? Thanks. --82.136.210.153 (talk) 02:22, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
- Guess I did indeed miss that one. Usually when I'm blocking a user I'll check through any edits they have that are still listed as the most recent page revisions, revert if necessary - in this case I clearly overlooked one. Thanks for picking it up. Yunshui 雲水 06:50, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
- I'm afraid that just looking through the list for recent page revisions may not be enough. Anyone could've made a (minuscule) change since, including bots. Multiple articles failing WP:ENT
Recently I saw several articles on actors who aren't notable enough to meet WP:ENT. A few of them are Daisy Shah, Mishti, Punit Pathak, Henry Byalikov and Isabel Kaif. I have nominated a few others for AfD. Most of them are created by the same user. List of pages created by the user is here. Should I nominate the non-notable ones for AfD? What do you suggest?--Skr15081997 (talk) 13:49, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
- I've not done a full analysis of all the sources, but (with the possible exception of Byalikov) you probably wouldn't get far with these at AFD. Entertainers don't have to meet WP:ENT if they meet WP:GNG, and it could be argued that the sources in these articles are sufficient for that. The way it basically works is that all articles have to meet WP:GNG (with one exception I'll get to in a moment), but we have pages like WP:ENT because if articles pass the bar there, it's almost certain that they would meet GNG anyway, even if that's not evident from the article. If you've made significant impact in your field, one would expect that there are sources out there. However, it's WP:GNG - not WP:ENT - that ultimately dictates whether an article belongs on Wikpedia; if it passes WP:GNG then it doesn't have to meet any of the more specific guidlines.
- The one exception to this rule is WP:PROF, which is the only notability guideline that can actually supercede WP:GNG. Because academics don't always receive much press coverage, a pass of WP:PROF is accepted as an indication of notability even if there aren't sufficient sources to pass WP:GNG. Needless to say, an academic who passes WP:GNG but not WP:PROF would still merit an article.
- Hope that makes things clearer. With regards to the articles, I'd recommend trying to make improvements rather than angling for deletion; those you've listed could probably be brought up to scratch with a bit of work. I'm not saying you shouldn't file an AFD for some of them, just be circumspect, and don't expect the discussion to automatically go in favour of deletion. Yunshui 雲水 14:04, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
- I totally agree with your reasons above. The deletion debates of a few articles AfDed by me are Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Rishabh_Sinha, Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Khushboo_Purohit_(2nd_nomination). Sooraj Pancholi and Athiya Shetty only have an unreleased film to their credit. I have another issue with this user. When a redirect is created by someone else and he thinks that the subject is possibly notable he creates a page with a wrong title and then requests at WP:RM to move the page. The latest example is Dhoom 4. I had created it as a redirect to the film series and he created a page with a different title and in the very next edit he made a request at WP:RM. The film's actors and actresses haven't been announced and he had created the page.--Skr15081997 (talk) 14:33, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

User Name Issue & Some Other Items
First, thank you for clearing up the issue with the Rehsgal user name --- I have requested the Gulakos name to avoid any future issues.
Now on to the Rehs Galleries issue. When that page was originally added to Wikipedia (back in 2009) it was accepted and I was very clear about my connection to the firm. I am pretty sure that the text (firm's history) for the Wikipedia article (which was removed by an editor this week) was written and posted before a very similar text was added to the Rehs Galleries web site. I have read all the links that editors have posted about the COI and even though I would technically have a COI, I do not think (and please correct me if I am wrong) that anything in the text would be considered self-promoting. The text is a simple history of the gallery which began in the 1940s. Is it possible to get the history added back to the article? If there is still a serious issue with the text being very similar on both sites, the one on the Rehs web site will be rewritten.
In addition, I would really like to understand why the name of the firm's page (originally Rehs Galleries, Inc.) was changed to Rehs Galleries? The firm is known worldwide as Rehs Galleries, Inc. --- not Rehs Galleries.
One more item ... the same editor, that seems to be coming at me for some unknown reason, has asked for a speedy deletion of emile munier. I am the world expert on this artist and nobody knows more about him than me. Back in 2006 I posted a longer article and was told that it was identical to the one on the emilemunier.org web site. The original editor who reviewed it stated that if I left the article on the page it would become public domain and I would not be able to keep the copyright ... I then went ahead and cut the article down to just some basic info, hoping that someone would come along and add more info --- that, over the last 8 years, never happened.
I do not understand why this page would now be flagged for speedy deletion? I am not Emile Munier and he was an important 19th century French artist. Also, an image I added to Wikipedia was deleted ... when it was originally added I gave up the copyright -- it is a photo I personally took of a painting by Munier.
Again, thank you for your assistance.

- Regarding editing the page; no, I'm not particularly concerned by your previous edits. However, our COI guideline states that If you have a personal connection to a topic or person, you are advised to refrain from editing those articles directly, from adding related advertising links, links to personal websites and similar, and to provide full disclosure of the connection if you comment about the article on talk pages or in other discussions.. We don't entirely forbid editors with a conflict of interest from editing pages about themselves or their organisations, but community consensus is very strongly against such editors doing any more than very basic housekeeping and anti-vandalism work.
- Your website's About Us page was created on July 26th 2009, at which point the History text was already present in the Wikipedia article, so hosting it on Wikipedia is not a copyright violation. Exceptions are made when disambiguation between similarly-titled entities is needed, but that's not the case here. "Rehs Galleries" is therefore the right naming format on Wikipedia.
- Unlike the Rehs Galleries page, the article on Munier is undoubtably a copyright violation. The text appeared on http://www.emilemunier.org/biography.htm in 2003, several years before you added it to Wikipedia. At that time, and ever since, the page stated This essay is copyrighted by Rehs Galleries, Inc. and may not be reproduced or transmitted without written permission from Rehs Galleries, Inc. We therefore cannot host this text on Wikipedia (although if you were to release it under CC-BY-SA, as described above, then we could).
- The issue with the image appears similar on the surface - you added it to Wikipedia after placing it on your website. However, in this case the picture was in the public domain (the artist was deceased and his copyright had long since expired, and photographic reproductions of flat images such as paintings do not generate a new copyright). I will restore the image and add the appropriate licence tags.
- Again, I apologise for the length of the above, but I hope this covers all of your questions adequately. Yunshui 雲水 13:10, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

I would like to know if you can now put the Rehs Galleries Wikipedia page back to the way it was a few days ago -- images, links and all? Shortly, we will have a new history page written for the gallery's web site which is completely different from the Wiki page.
In the future ... if there are timeline updates/corrections for the gallery's history how do I have those added or changed? Do I just post them on the talk page and wait for someone to add them? Will an editor actually look at that?
I will also work on new text for the emile munier Wikipage and post that shortly. In addition, thank you for putting the image back.

I've reverted your change on Rehs Galleries. That clearly remains copywritten material on his web page and needs to follow this process for inclusion in wikipedia. Even if he were to remove the copyright, WP:PERMISSIONS and OTRS is there for a reason. As an admin, I'd have expected you to know that. The Dissident Aggressor 19:35, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- If you check - as I did - you'll find that the Wikipedia text predates the text on his website, by about four months. The CC-BY-SA licence is there because I asked him to put it up to comply with the licence under which he was reusing Wikipedia's content. Since the free CC-BY-SA release of this material predates the copyright claim on his website, that claim is nullified with respect to the reproduced text. If you take thirty seconds to read the thread above you will see the discussion which led to my re-instatement of the text. Yunshui 雲水 21:54, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

- By doing a very simple Wayback search. If you don't know how to do that... perhaps you should learn, before making very bad calls on copyright issues and then aggressively going after those who try to correct your mistakes. The About Us page on the gallery website first appears on June 26th 2009, at which time the text was already in the Wikipedia article - which you can verify by checking the page history. And please don't lecture me about OTRS; I volunteer there and deal with multiple permissions tickets every day. Rather than assuming that anyone who disagrees with you is ignorant/incompetent - which seems to be something of a theme for you, by the looks of your talkpage - perhaps you should consider the possibility that those of us who have been here for several years might actually know what we're doing. Crazy thought, but hey, why not give it try for size? Yunshui 雲水 22:07, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) And, uh, even if not, given that the article text is now released under CC-BY-SA, we don't need to go through any process to use it; it's free for us to use anyway, as its license is compatible with Wikipedia's. OTRS isn't required regardless. Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 22:13, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- Wayback shows when it was crawled, not created. The Dissident Aggressor 22:15, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- Well, it's irrelevant, because I've re-added the text with attribution, so even if that site's text predate's Wikipedia's, the CC-BY-SA license both texts are licensed under is now satisfied. No OTRS permission necessary, since it's CC-BY-SA. Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 22:22, 8 August 2014 (UTC)

What the heck are you doing here [3]? No CC-BY-SA in sight. The Dissident Aggressor 22:54, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- That image is tagged as public domain, is it not? I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be; I don't think taking a picture or digital image of a painting gives one copyright, and I doubt adding a watermark would either (though I could be wrong). Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 22:59, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- Those watermarks are put there deliberately to trace the origin of the image. Almost every gallery does that and the Rehs Gallery page where it's used says copyright.
- I probably should just walk away now because it's clear that copyright is pretty lax here. If you admins don't care, I don't either. The Dissident Aggressor 23:05, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
- Well, if that's how you're gonna be about it. I mean, copyright is important, but we must beware of cutting off our noses to spite our faces, too. Writ Keeper ⚇♔ 23:08, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
As far as the copyright for images. Most works by artists who have been dead for more than 75 years fall into the public domain (though there are exceptions to this). We place that watermark (as do others) on the images so people cannot attempt to sell the painting without our knowledge ... which happens from time to time. We have found our paintings (before watermarking them) being offered on sites like eBay. Of course, a person with great talent can remove a watermark, but in general most people will walk away from watermarked images and bother someone else. I should add that in the beginning we watermarked images in a way that you really needed to look hard for the watermark ... and when we found them on eBay, etc. we were able to take swift action.
By the way ... if you look at most of the images on our contemporary site, they are watermarked as well ... and we really do not need to do that since the copyright rests with the artist ... but once again, it keeps some people from 'stealing' and 'using' them when they shouldn't.
For all involved here ... even The Dissident Aggressor ... enjoy your weekend/vacation
Peace Out!

Just a thought
Hello! I have read many of your posts, but I do not think I have had the pleasure of "talking" to you directly until now. I finally got around to really reading your user page. Your insights into Wikipedia addiction are hilarious! Thank you for brightening my day. Just a thought... I recognized the pattern of this "obsession" from another community, the SCA which sports a similar list: "You know you're in the SCA when...". So, have you ever thought of sharing your brilliant observations on a page here on the Wikipedia (aside from your own), something like "You know you're into the Wikipedia when..."? Speaking from personal experience, I am sure others have had moments like yours when the Wiki-way (or Wiki-do, the first non contact martial art) takes over, and could add to such a compilation. A couple of days ago I actually reacted when a friend said: "But it's a great film!" I thought: It should be "noted film"...
Btw, for other interesting martial arts see: Gar-de-ning, a messy, full contact sport where many of your opponents always die. Hope you have a very pleasant holiday and don't respond too quickly to this post.Cheers, w.carter-Talk 15:09, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
Reviewing Sandbox Drafts for Student Articles
Hello @Yunshui:. Thanks for all your terrific feedback on student proposals. Students have now posted a link to their sandbox draft in response to your feedback and are ready for your final review of their full article draft. Please try to have this review finished before Monday (August 11) at 6pm. Thanks so much for your help and let me know if you have any questions. Matthewvetter (talk) 12:42, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

DYK for Morihei Ueshiba
On 14 August 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Morihei Ueshiba, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Morihei Ueshiba founded the Japanese martial art of aikido? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Morihei Ueshiba. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

A few days ago, you closed this AfD as a delete. Today, the subject of the article posted a video detailing a somewhat unrelated part of the affair, most likely leading to it being recreated today. I just wanted to let someone know that first it might be a G4 (and is definitely a BLPProd), since I haven't seen the previous version of the page, and second, might be worth protecting for a few days, given the publishing of the video calling attention to this article. Thanks for your time, Nolelover Talk·Contribs 00:08, 25 August 2014 (UTC)

Regarding deleted page Goonga Pehelwan.
Hi. This is with respect to the discussion we had a few days ago. I would like to clarify that Goonga Pehelwan is the name of the documentary for which I am trying to create a Wikipedia page. This does not violate any rules, I hope. Can I go ahead and rewrite the article now?
Goonga Pehelwan (talk) 10:28, 25 August 2014 (UTC)
- I'd recommend that you file a change of username request first (you're likely to run into difficulties with your current username, as it matches the title of the film; see the username policy for more details), but I see no harm in you rewriting the article. Remember that you absolutely must not use text that has already been published on the web or anywhere else (write the article in your own words) and that the content must be written from a neutral point of view - if there's any suggestion of advertising or promotion, it's likely to be deleted, especially so since you have an admitted conflict of interest. However, as long as you are careful and abide by the best practice guidelines for editors with a COI, I've no objection to you writing a new draft. Yunshui 雲水 10:40, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

Regarding deleted page of VisionDirect
Today you've closed VisionDirect's AfD through deletion. I was hoping some of the users would re-read through the article again since the last comment of the discussion was the 1st of September and the page was completely re-written on the 3rd of September. I see that no users re-reviewed the article in the deletion log. I should have mentioned this myself in the deletion log, but believed others would spot that the article had been re-written to conform with Wikipedia guidlines. After the 3rd it was no longer WP:PROMO, reliable sources were added for WP:CORP, no longer a WP:SPA and followed the guidelines set down in WP:WEB. Would it be possible to re-open the discussion for the AfD for a period of week or two. This would ensure more discussion in the deletion log and ascertain if the new page really did not conform to guidelines. Thank you for your consideration User:Smeldridge 14:40, 08 September 2014 (UTC)
- That seems perefectly reasonable (I was a bit surprised at the direction the discussion had taken when I saw the article, but it seemed that the community had spoken...). I should have checked the history and dates more closely, of course. I've recreated the page and relisted the AFD discussion, with a note regarding this conversation. Curtis Books
Why in God's name did you speedy this article immediately upon undeletion? Curtis Books was a significant American publishing house for more than fifty years, and certainly is not a subject meriting deletion, no less summary deletion without discussion. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo) (talk) 15:26, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
- Well, I now see what was going on, which was that another user commandeered the redirect I created (which pointed to a very major publishing company) and converted it into an unsourced article of dubious accuracy. Before I speedy-nominate a page, I check for things like this -- which turn up with unhappy frequency. The Big Bad Wolfowitz (aka Hullaballoo) (talk) 18:09, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
- Not entirely sure what has you so worked up over a redirect (I assumed from your protestations at WP:UND that you were happy the redirect had been overwritten, and that you approved), but since it seems to be generating some ire, I've recreated the redirect for you. - You're more than welcome. Incidentally, there are a couple of "official" ways to thank someone on Wikipedia - if you pull up the edit history of a page (using the "View history" tab) you'll see that there's an option to thank a user for their edit on each line - this sends them a discreet ping to let them know someone appreciates their work. For more public thanks, or for some particularly major bit of assistance, you can use Wikilove - click on the little heart-shaped icon that appears near the search bar when you're on a userpage, and follow the instructions in the popup window that results. - Apart from the promotional content, the article was, from its first iteration, a copyright violation of an article published in Hollingsworth Heritage (page 10 of this document). It therefore cannot be restored in its previous form. I've nothing against someone creating an article about the company (provided that the usual notability and sourcing requirements are met), but it can't use that text.
