Deepak Kalpoe

I was in the process of writing a comment at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2014 May 12 when you deleted the article. I reproduce below the comment I was writing, and I wonder if you will be willing to reverse your closure of the discussion, as the result is far from clear and uncontroversial. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 10:46, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

My comment written for the RfD discussion:
Keep. I am bewildered by the arguments advanced for deletion. The article Disappearance of Natalee Holloway contains several mentions of Deepak Kalpoe, so anyone searching for information about him will stand a chance of finding what they are looking for via the redirect. That is what a redirect does. That is all that the redirect does. The existence of the redirect merely says "information about the subject that you typed is is available on this article": it does not say anything else at all, and it absolutely certainly does not make any allegation or accusation about him. In fact, if anything, the contrary is so: by far the most likely reason why anyone might search for "Deepak Kalpoe" is that they have heard or read somewhere that he was a suspect in this case, in which case the redirect will take them to an article which tells them that a court ruled that there was no evidence against him, and which explicitly refers to an investigation of a sample from his car as a "false lead". Thus the redirect might well result in removing a reader's suspicions against Deepak Kalpoe; I cannot begin to see how it could possibly create or confirm such suspicions.
Having said all that, I take a very different view of earlier versions of the page Deepak Kalpoe, which was a negative unsourced BLP, and I shall delete the earlier versions. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 10:46, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Of course; I'll take care of it now. Yunshui  11:34, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Done I've left the pre-redirect revisions deleted, however. Yunshui  11:39, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 11:55, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Don't do that whyile it is at RfD. THat is "Redirets for discussion". So discuss it there, ter is a discussion inprogress there. It is typical now to do whatever one thinks and I uppose one wou claim WO:BRD but since the discssion is open, contrbute to the discussion rather than just being Adolf Hitler. 14:01, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry? My closure and deletion was a direct response to your request for speedy deletion. Want to perhaps rethink comparing a volunteer administrator on an online encyclopedia doing what you specifically asked him to do with a genocidal dictator? Yunshui  14:10, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Deleting a redirect

Dear Yunshui: If this cross-space redirect has only one incoming link from the Cut-and-paste holding pen archive, is it needed? I'm thinking not, but I wanted to check. —Anne Delong (talk) 18:14, 13 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Anne. Not sure which redirect you mean (links please!) but assuming it's a standard mainspace page redirecting to user, talk or another inappropriate namespace then I can't see there'd be a problem - just remember to clear the backlink. Yunshui  07:23, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, rookie mistake. Here's the link: Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/DragonWave. Of course, now it will link to this page, too. What do you mean by "clear the backlink"? —Anne Delong (talk) 11:10, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Backlink = page that links to the page you're on (so everything in What links here?, basically). If you use Twinkle, there's a useful pre-deletion function called Unlink in the menu, which will automatically remove the links on any pages that direct to the page you're nuking. Incidentally, an AFC redirect isn't a valid target for speedy deletion under R2; that criterion only applies to redirects from mainspace (so if the article DragonWave was a redirect to the AFC page it could be deleted, but not the other way around). Yunshui  14:23, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, Yunshui. Two things:

I've nominated hundreds of pages for deletion in the past, and links to them show up on various talk pages in other places. I can't remember ever seeing one that wasn't a redlink after the deletion. Knowing that a page which is being discussed has been deleted is often useful to the discussion. This can't be a very widely used feature. Maybe it's intended mainly for redlinks in articles?
I was considering deleting the page under G6, rather than R2, as cleanup. The page was historymerged with, and redirected to, Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/DragonWave, Inc., which then became an article, so that title is also a redirect. The link back to the page creator is from this second redirect, so that's covered, and the cut and paste archive already has another link that's a redirect to the same article. The first redirect looked useless to me, but I wasn't sure if there was another reason for keeping it that I hadn't thought of, which is why I asked you. Sorry I didn't explain more fully right away. —Anne Delong (talk) 15:49, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
I think Unlink is indeed intended to deal with article redlinks - personally I rarely use it, so I'm not too familiar with how it runs. Hadn't realised you were intending to use G6 - in that case, I can't really see any reason to object (nor - more importantly - any reason for anyone else to object); it's not as though the redirect is doing anything useful. Request for adoption

Hi Yunshui, I am a bit old user here (more than 6 months experience), but to understand the rules and guidelines properly I am requesting you to adopt me.--Skr15081997 (talk) 09:10, 14 May 2014 (UTC)

I don't know that you need it, to be honest - you're pretty competent already. Are there any particular areas where you feel you need to improve your wiki-skills? Maybe we could operate a slightly less "official" adoption focusing on one or two specific bits of Wikipedia - you're certainly not going to learn anything new by jumping through the hoops of an adoption school. Yunshui  09:42, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
The WP:MOS appears a bit difficult for me to follow. Part of the problem arises from the fact that I am still learning English(I don't mean a, b, c etc.) and frankly speaking I feel a bit inferior here when someone needs to copyedit the articles which I had created, especially Manta, Manta and Gustav Scholz which I had nominated for DYK. I think my vocabulary is not as large as compared to other regular contributors. I am just a teenager right now and still learning. I felt a bit confident when I started leaving a space after full stops and comma. I want to learn a more about the Manual of style because I want to create and expand good articles, featured articles and lists. I hope you are able to understand my problem.--Skr15081997 (talk) 14:14, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Trust me, your English is a damn sight better than my Hindi... Okay; in that case I suggest what we do is take an article that's currently in a bit of a state - there's plenty of them out there - and work through the appropriate MOS requirements to bring it up to speed. Do you have any you'd like to suggest? Yunshui  14:18, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
I can speak ,write and think in Hindi better than my schoolmates. Even, they know have the similar knowledge and understanding of English like me, but I am zero when it comes to typing in Hindi. SuggestBot gives me suggestions about articles that need cleanup. I think any one of those articles would be good to start with. I would make the article encyclopedic in tone, neutral and try to make sure it follows Manual of style. You can check the article after I have finished and give your suggestions for improvement.--Skr15081997 (talk) 14:45, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Sounds like a plan. Let me know when you've picked something and we can take a look. Who knows, maybe you'll end up creating a GA by accident while you're at it? Yunshui  14:49, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
Today in the morning I was searching through the List of American films of 1914 and I saw a redlink The Wrath of the Gods (1914 film). I have made a lot of edits to the article and I would be glad if you make suggestions for improvement. I have really worked a lot on this film's article but never seen the film. I have even nominated it for a DYK.--Skr15081997 (talk) 14:57, 14 May 2014 (UTC)
I'll try and take a look at it some time this morning. Yunshui  07:17, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Okay, here's a point by point review:

  • In the third sentence, replacing "The film was released" with "It was released" would avoid the repetition of the phrase, "The film", which is a little grating.
  • "Buddhists" should be capitalised.
  • "Tom Wilson(Frank Borzage)": missing space.
  • In the sentence, "The locals, who have been stirred up..." the phrase "the family" has been used twice - the repetition reads a bit awkwardly.
  • Consider wikilinking "Sakura-Jima" and/or "Kagoshima".
  • "...and decided when possible to use Japanese..." should read "...and decided where possible to use Japanese..."
  • "Approximately 1,000, mostly Japanese, extras were used" should read "Approximately 1,000 extras, mostly Japanese, were used".
  • "January 1914,just": missing space.
  • "...audiences as an heroine..." should read "...audiences as a heroine..." (or ,better in this context: "...audiences as the heroine...").
  • Punctuation: "...films release.[6] on May 1, 1914" should read "...film's release[6] on May 1, 1914" (apostrophe, removed full stop).
  • "large scale" → "large-scale"

Most of this is nit-picking - overall the grammar, spelling and style is exceeding good (you've even used semi-colons correctly in a couple of places; most native speakers can't do that!). Nice work, and pretty much compliant with MOS:FILM, too. I'm most impressed. Yunshui  10:17, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the review, Yunshui. It's quite pleasing to see an article with so much context and sources. I have even added 2 images to it from Commons. Can I use one of these images for DYK, both of them are in public domain(pre-1923) in USA.--Skr15081997 (talk) 10:40, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Yes; if they're PD there should be no problem using them at DYK. Yunshui  12:30, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

Hajimemashite,

I am not sure what I did to offend you but I genuinely say sorry for it. I am not out to offend other people and WP:AGF edit in good faith. If I made a mistake – and I very often – I am sorry. And even if I didn't, I am not here to offend other editors.

I never suggested that you were. I removed the deletion template from the article - the source was enough to show that it wasn't vandalism - but since the page was little more than a dictionary definition, and there was no more really to be said about the topic, I redirected the page to Pyrroline (since we don't have an article exclusively on 1-pyrroline).
By the way, I have more facilty in English than Japanese, and it make life easier for other people reading this page if you write in English too. Yunshui  13:08, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Deletion of user talk page

I have already read your 'check this page first' and I am still bewildered as why you have deleted a user's talk page. User_talk:Drowninginlimbo. Usually, the only reason talk pages are deleted are in exceptional circumstances, so I'd like to ask what that circumstance was. Courtesy vanishing? Also curious is because the speedy deletion criteria you mentioned specifically prohibited user talk pages from the criteria. Was this just a misclick or an oversight? Tutelary (talk) 19:40, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Neither; there was a valid reason for removing the page but I'm afraid I'm not at liberty to share it. Yunshui  06:58, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

Holding tickets

Hey there Yunshui. I'm just popping in here to give you a friendly reminder about the section of the guide on Reservations and note that you've had to have two of your reservations broken by a tool admin this week. I'm guessing that you just get distracted and loose track of it (as I've done that before as well), but when John (broke the most recent upon my request) and Mlperc (broke the other one and closed it) or any other tool admin has to go in and break the reservations, that can be a minor annoyance to them. All that I'm asking is that you "try" to be a little more mindful and remember to break reservations or leave a comment as to why you are holding them in the future. Thanks. — {{U|Technical 13}} (tec) 15:03, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

I've no idea what you guys are talking about here; I'm guessing it was one of the other admins with "John" in their username. (Maybe we should have a dab page or a category?) CVUA mentor

Hey! I have been here for almost a year now and with 3,000 mainspace edits. I would like to learn more about how to deal vandalisms in Wikipedia because I have installed Twinkle a couple of weeks ago. Can you be my mentor in CVUA? I specialize in sports-related articles, especially in professional wrestling. Thanks and happy editing! FairyTailRocks 14:11, 27 May 2014 (UTC)

Sure, why not? I've created a CVUA page for you (you can move this into your userspace if you'd prefer); have a look through the tasks there and let me know how you get on. Sports and wrestling aren't really my thing, but those articles do get a lot of vandalism, so more competent anti-vandal patrollers in that area would definitely be a good thing. Yunshui  14:16, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
Thank you Yunshui! Is there a deadline for answering those questions? FairyTailRocks 05:48, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Informal mentorship requested

Hello Yunshui! I saw you at the WP:Teahouse and your profile caught my eye because of your O Sensei quote. I have trained Ki Society Aikido for over a decade; it's quite a journey. I like your tone and approach in your responses. I've wanted some mentorship around editing a specific controversial page - it's an alternative medicine "fringe" modality which has attracted a number of editors who are very strict (which is appropriate) but who seem to be more interested in blocking anything that's not right rather than improving the quality of the page. The result is an article that reads poorly, with some factual errors and also some serious omissions. I have educated myself on WP:MEDRS and have concluded that the scientific studies that have been done are not valid for WP health claims because they were published in non-mainstream journals, so I'm not debating that aspect. Presently I've been focusing on locating more secondary sources, mostly books from mainstream publishers, because the article lacked good citations and relied too much on a primary website. I've been slowly adding some better-written content when I feel that I can strongly justify it with my sources - I accept that anything not supported will be reverted. The experienced editors on the page are not ideal collaborators for drafts, though I recognize that some consensus will have to be reached. That's why I'd like a mentor for discussing the issues and working up drafts, so when a change is presented it is already good enough that it doesn't ruffle any feathers. Would you be willing to help me with this? --Karinpower (talk) 03:55, 26 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Karinpower. Rolfing, eh? Not something I've much knowledge of, so I don't know how much use I would be, but I'd certainly be happy to look over any draft changes you have and give my opinion as a Wikipedian. I suggest you use your sandbox to prepare your proposed amendments - then just drop me a link here when you have something that needs looking at and I'll see what I can do. Yunshui  07:12, 27 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, Yunshui! It may be a couple weeks til I have time to put something together, but I'll let you know! In the meantime, would you be willing to take a few minutes to look at the short article Rolfing and the recent history? I think it will help give you a sense of the dynamic that's happening around this page. I've edited on a handful of other pages and this is the first time I've experienced having the feeling that editors were sometimes more interested in blocking improvements that fine-tuning them. Looking forward to having your neutral perspective; in a sense it's perfect that you aren't very familiar with the topic. --Karinpower (talk) 18:03, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

And while the subject is open I should probably chip in myself. Nearly got an edit down at UAA two days ago but the guy got blocked for vandalism before I could save the report. I really need to get around to finishing the Reliable Sources, that said that's what's dragging me back, unfinished business, that said Wikipedia is always 'unfinished business' as it's never finished, maybe I need that in my motives. Ah Well, CestLaGaire as I say randomly. Hope it ain't too crazy in your area. MM (I did the who in the whatnow?) (I did it!) 23:49, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi Yunshui, I wanted you to see some work which I have done on this article. Please review it for Neutrality.--Skr15081997 (talk) 11:00, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

I don't see any glaring issues with it, certainly, although I'll confess I havn't given it a very thorough going over, just a quick read-through. I certainly wouldn't have any qualms about offering it up at WP:GAN in that state; you'll probably have to make some adjustments before it passes but it wouldn't be quick-failed that I can see. Yunshui  11:34, 29 May 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick review, I admit some more work is needed on the article. I am glad to read that it won't be quick-failed in the present state but since it has now become so dear to me(more than 99% of the content was added by me) I won't nominate it in this state. There's a lot more that has to be added and that will definitely be done.--Skr15081997 (talk) 11:59, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

Re: User:TheLittleDuke's NLT block

TheLittleDuke (talk · contribs) has now deleted the tweets and this comment on his talk page shows that he has rescinded his legal threat. Since you was the blocking admin, this block can now be lifted. —Farix (t | c) 17:00, 29 May 2014 (UTC)

The legal threat was part of the reason for blocking, and rescinding it certainly goes some way towards mitigating the necessity for a block. However, I personally am still not convinced that he has any intentions here beyond plugging his company, and I see no sign that he has understood why that isn't acceptable. I am therefore not going to lift the block - other admins who monitor Category:Requests for unblock will review it in their own time. Yunshui  07:31, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
I've put in a request at WP:ANI for the block to be reviewed. TheLittleDuke has an outstanding unblock request that is two days old with no action take as of yet. —Farix (t | c) 17:05, 30 May 2014 (UTC)
Well, I'm not totally convinced either, but the page in question is salted against recreation, so there's probably not too much further disruption that TheLittleDuke can cause; Yunshui, would you be okay if I unblocked on more-or-less the basis of "sure, why not" (with a long statement I'll write regarding notability as it pertains to Wikipedia, AfC, etc.) ? Seeking Adoption

Hi Yunshui, I would like you to admit me into your adoption program. Although I am a bit of an old user I would not say I know my way around entirely. I am part of the welcoming team and I receive a lot of questions from new users, in most cases I'm not in the position to give them the best of answers so what I do is to reconstruct the question on their talk page and place a "help me" tag on it. I find that most of the time the response comes from you and it's usually very good though concise. But anyway that's how you came to my attention and I thank you for all the responses that you give out. I'm an admin hopeful and I believe there are so many lessons here and there you could teach me to becoming a better Wikipedian and a successful admin one day. I am looking forward to drinking from your well of many years of experience and great contributions. Kind Regards... —Sadat (Masssly)TalkCEmail 22:16, 15 May 2014 (UTC)

I don't see why not... you're experienced enough that my adoption school is probably pitched a bit low for your skills, though if you want to make use of one or two sections to test your knowledge you are more than welcome to do so. What might work better would be if you led the way in letting me know what areas you want to improve in - helping new users is certainly a laudable goal, so you might want to pitch in at the Teahouse and the Help desk - just monitoring those pages is a good way to learn the standard solutions to new editors' most common issues. If you're looking to run for adminship at some point in the future, I can point you at the areas you'll need to work in and suggest how to approach them. Or if there's any specific element of Wikipedia's policies that you think you need more explanation on, just say the word. Look forward to working with you. Yunshui  09:05, 16 May 2014 (UTC)

 ::Speaking (or in this case writeing) of {{subst:uw-disruptive1}} Is used for vandalism that doesn't fit into anything else but doesn't fit into {{subst:uw-vandalism1}}

☒N As above. {{uw-disruptive1}} is worded more severely than {{uw-vandal1}} - why would you use one in preference to the other?
...I admit i havent really Used {{subst:uw-disruptive1}} I hadn't Had much idea about what it was Used for. In fact i only noticed what it was ment to be used for when i read it on the warnings page :(. Dudel250 ChatPROD Log CSD Logs 10:02, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Well, the key advantage of the {{uw-disruptive}} templates is that they can be applied to edits which might not actually constitute vandalism in the strictest sense, but are nonetheless disruptive. An example might be the good-faith addition of clearly unencyclopedic or inappropriate content. The {{uw-disruptive1}} template also has a link to the Welcoming Committee, which you might want to offer the user to help them feel more at home. It might help if you can clarify in your own head why disruptive editing differs from vandalism - the two terms cover different, if related, issues. Yunshui  10:39, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

The Brass Armadillo

Hello, I was trying to add an article about The Brass Armadillo, but I wasn't finished. I tried to simply save my work, not knowing that the article would be posted immediately. I was under the impression that until I had a verified account, nothing I wrote would be seen. Also, I forgot the password to the account I originally posted the article with so I had to create this one today. I will be resubmitting the full article again, so it will be similar to the first one which was apparently rejected. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WilliamtempletonIII (talkcontribs) 16:20, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

I assume that makes you User:Badbatchbilly. Technically what you're doing would be considered an abuse of multiple accounts, but if we can assume that you won't be returning to your previous account then there should be no problem.
The original article was deleted because it did not make any case for the company being notable - the version you have posted under your new account, whilst in need of some editing to remove the promotional language therein, does contain sufficient sources to attest to notability, and so you need have no fear of the page being deleted again on that score. 'Fraid not. Once a page has been deleted, a search on Wikipedia for that exact page title will always bring up the deleted article page (although it will eventually drop off search engines such as Google or Bing, if that's what you're asking about). The only time this won't happen is if a new page is actually created at that title. Yunshui  13:05, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
