Hasidic storytelling on Yiddish literature page

Hello Yoninah! I've just improved the Yiddish literature page, especially my former text on Hasidic storytelling and the Sippurei Ma'asiyot. Now it doesn't refer to "fairy tales"! I therefore took off the heading-section banner of "citations lacking". I hope it's OK now. Also, the image to represent the Sippurei Ma'asiyot on Hasidic philosophy is better! N.B. the former comparison of the Sleeping Beauty princess with its inversion in the "Lost Princess" is discussed in the Roskies book, "The Lost Art of Yiddish Storytelling" first chapter on Rabbi Nachman. But I took the uncited reference to this from the Yiddish literature page, as the Hasidic section needed to be similar brevity to the other sections, while such a detail, if cited, could be put on any future Sippurei Ma'asiyot page. I won't myself have the time to make such a page yet, as I now realise I would only want to do a proper job, and the research would take a long time.

I also admit (if you hadn't realised it already) to attempting to put the image of the Ukranian Trees-intuitive depiction of the imagination of Rabbi Nachman's Tales-on Nachman of Breslov page a couple of days ago! It was a long shot, as I guess it wasn't in keeping with the favoured concision of this page, but such intuitive imagery is more in keeping with the styles of other Hasidic pages on wikipedia. The image and caption probably wouldn't be out of place on, say, Hasidic philosophy or Deveikut, but there is already the other intuitive image to the Tales on Hasidic philosophy. I've changed "controversial" to "major." I think this is NPOV and I hope we can agree on this. Why should "controversial" be the first and foremost feature of this article? Anyone who's been to Israel has seen and heard Na Nach; the presence is very bold and widespread, and it is clearly a major influence. Also, why should opinion of the controvery be formed with respect to opinions of other "leaders" who are POV and have an interest in gaining or building a dynasty? Notability concerns for Myer Rosenblum

Thank you for your comments - I now realise that his notability is questionable. Rosenblum is only just notable per WP:ATH. He played four (yep, only four) games for the New South Rugby union team. These were only post-facto recognised as Australian national Rugby Union team matches, and the retrospective recognition was for Rugby union in its amateur era . In that respect, the Rosenblum article would appear rather not DYK-worthy. I would argue that the "hook" for the article is that he gave the second longest serving Prime Minister of Australia his first job. Your thoughts?

Thanks for treating the DYK for the singer! I said soloist to stress that although he has a career as a soloist he is also interested and engaged in ensemble singing. But singer is fine, of course. I will try to find out more precisely if he had solo or ensemble function with the Huelgas Ensemble and others, "worked with" could mean both. I've improved a number of the refs, but it is slow going because so many are from the 50's and 60's. (See Talk:Terrain_Gallery for some of the details.)In many cases, the original editor used a footnote as a combination of a citation and an explanatory footnote. I left the explanatory material in, and converted the citation, when I could find one, to a proper format. Is there an official format style that indicates that titles in submissions should not be linked? I had seen in both ways. The vast majority of the time without a link. Sometimes with. That caught my eye, and seemed better. But if it is forbidden, I apologize, and thank you for the de-link. If there is no rule on it, I imagine I would prefer to link it, as in my official edit. Building and destroying the Beit Hamikdash

Looking over the articles relating to the Temple in Jerusalem, there is lots of confusion, some stemming from opposing secular and religious scholarly outlooks, but more so from various editors making major contributions over the course of a decade and creating and running parallel articles about what should be one topic. This is the situation at the moment:

1. Temple in Jerusalem is the over-all article. So far so good, but it does not connect with so many other articles about its own subject matter, essentially the First and Second Temples. There should really be more about its name and place in Judaism over the millennia as the Beit Hamikdash - "House of Holiness" that was built for, functioned for, existed for, was destroyed for, and prayed for by the Jewish people.
2. The First Temple article is at Solomon's Temple which reads like a Christian exposition and not like the holiest Jewish house of worship and sanctity that it was, while the Second Temple article is at Second Temple of Jerusalem. This is inconsistent. In addition, there is also a separate and parallel article for the Second Temple at Herod's Temple since Herod's Temple was an extension of the Second Temple.
3. When trying to place the destruction of the First and Second Temples, which according to Judaism occurred on Tisha B'Av, with the general dates for their destruction in Jewish history conventionally given as 586 BCE and 70 CE, when one tries to look for the times relating to the destruction of the First Temple, there is no linkage to the subject matter of the Jewish version such as the build up from The Three Weeks and The Nine Days but rather the Solomon's Temple/First Temple article links to Siege of Jerusalem (597 BC) which cites "Babylonian chronicles" (published by Donald Wiseman in 1956) making no mention of the accepted Jewish chronology and observances relating to the same time-frame. In fact it uses the Jewish-sounding months in the non-Jewish Babylonian time-frame. (The names were originally from Babylonia, but not the actual concepts and months themselves which were of Mosaic origin in the Torah itself). With more articles like this from non-Torah sources each with their own POV of course.
4. The only "normally named" Temple is the Third Temple, which does not even exist! While the First Temple and Second Temple have still not earned the honor of a clear-cut and clearly identifiable name and articles for themselves.

This is a big job. But to start, please see how the article about the First Temple/Solomon's Temple can be improved by inserting into it more Jewishly relevant material about it's destruction that incorporates the timely themes of Seventeenth of Tammuz; The Three Weeks; The Nine Days; Tisha B'Av. DYK hook for Sherman White (basketball)

Hi Yoninah. I see that you've been pretty active on verifying DYK hooks lately, and I didn't know where else to turn regarding a concern for one of my hooks. A few days ago, my hook for Sherman White (basketball) was accepted. I had written it to be:

"...that Sherman White was banned from ever playing in the NBA due to his involvement in a point shaving scandal in college?"

I just now looked at Template:Did you know/Queue to see how long it'll be until it makes the main page (because I thought it'd have been up there by now) and I find that the hook now reads:

"...that in 1950–51, Sherman White came within 77 points of becoming the National Collegiate Athletic Association's all-time single season leading scorer?"

Frankly I'm pissed. Not only did no one bother telling me, as the creator of the article, but the reason I chose my hook was because practically the entire article is about his involvement in one of the biggest controversies in college basketball history. Not only that, but the reason he didn't break the scoring record was because he was forced to prematurely quit the team once he was caught and the scandal broke! The hook, as it stands now, is a tangential DYK to Sherman White at best and is far less interesting (not to mention it's misleading) than the one I had written about being banned for life from the NBA.

Is there any way, if you get this in time, for you to change it? I can't figure out how and I'm really mad at whatever editor thought that his/her hook is better, because frankly it sucks. Thanks. Jrcla2 (talk) 16:23, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

RFA - I think you ought to!

I can understand your preference for content work. Despite Jimbo's pronouncement that adminship "should be no big deal" it has a habit of drawing people into all sorts of machinations. Thanks for your edits. Referencing is not my strong point, so I'm grateful for the help. One point I noticed is that you changed "sweepstake" to "sweepstakes". That reflects US usage rather than my (UK) usage (where the word "sweepstake" is used, unless there is more than one of them), and therefore your change is fine - but I wonder whether the drawing of lots to choose a name would be described as a "sweepstakes" in any case in the US. Possible copyedit of hook for Mesa/Sespe/Vaqueros

Hi Yoninah! Is it still possible to copyedit that hook? I just now looked at it for the first time. It's an unusual usage to say that an oil field is "part of" a geological formation, so can I suggest this -- "... that the Mesa Oil Field is within the Sespe and Vaqueros Formations, which together form the second-most-prolific oil-producing geologic unit in Southern California?" (changed "part of" to "within", added "geologic" before "unit" since that terminology may not be obvious to everyone).
