Rejected draft reports no longer updating?

[edit]

Hello William Avery,

The rejected draft reports you created doesn't seem to be updating anymore. The last information is from 10th of September: https://heber.toolforge.org/drafts/filter/20220910. All the following days show an empty report. MKFI (talk) 11:24, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know. I'll take a look later. William Avery (talk) 12:32, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It should be updating as usual now. I am subscribed to the appropriate mailing list, but missed this. 🤭 William Avery (talk) 15:46, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! MKFI (talk) 06:19, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rejected drafts report stopped updating

[edit]

Hello William Avery,

The rejected drafts report has stopped updating, the last information is from 6th of April: https://heber.toolforge.org/drafts/filter/20230406. All the following days show an empty report. Could you please check it? MKFI (talk) 08:22, 12 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. The MariaDB software used by ToolForge was changed from version 10.1.44 to version 10.4.28 by this, and that broke it. William Avery (talk) 10:37, 12 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the quick fix! MKFI (talk) 10:44, 12 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

[edit]
The Original Barnstar
Thanks for helping new drafts I created (like Madeira parakeet and Providence blue pigeon). I know it was a while ago but I truly appreciate it! Underscore1234 (talk) 17:45, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Much appreciated.😎 Glad to know I was a help and not an annoyance!

Invitation

[edit]

Hello William Avery!

  • The New Pages Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles needing review. We could use a few extra hands to help.
  • We think that someone with your activity and experience is very likely to meet the guidelines for granting.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time, but it requires a strong understanding of Wikipedia’s CSD policy and notability guidelines.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision, and feel free to post on the project talk page with questions.
  • If patrolling new pages is something you'd be willing to help out with, please consider applying here.

Thank you for your consideration. We hope to see you around!

MOS:RANGE edits

[edit]

As in this edit, you mention MOS:RANGE as the reason for your edit, but the text you cite does not prohibit the use of en dashes as a separator for a date range. In fact, in the examples listed "For ranges between numbers, dates, or times, use an en dash: pp. 7–19; 64–75%; Henry VIII reigned 1509–1547" the en dash is specifically listed for a range of dates. Why bother "fixing" a non-problem that is specifically permitted by the guideline you point to as justification for your edit? Alansohn (talk) 14:05, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

And if you read the guideline a little further it advises, "Do not mix en dashes with between or from", giving the specific example "from 1961 to 1964, not from 1961–1964". Is that not clear? William Avery (talk) 15:25, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Page edit help

[edit]

Greetings William, I was giving your name from Senior Wikipedia Administrator, Brendan Conway. A friend of mine has a Wiki page nominated for deletion.

https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/David_Boulton

David is ill with COVID and asked me to assist him. I don't have enough experience to update his page to meet the objections to his page. David would like to keep his page. He has a list of more resources that would be helpful to document his case for keeping the page. He asked me to contact you on his behalf, my name is Kevin Manley. Are you available to help with any edits to comply with wiki standards? Kevin Manley (talk) 16:23, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I don't think I want to get involved with that. I would encourage you to read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. William Avery (talk) 07:59, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, William. Kevin Manley (talk) 13:01, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Article improvement help

[edit]

Hello Mr. Avery, Brendan Conway, Senior Wikipedia Administrator, recommended that I contact you regarding my Wikipedia article. It was nominated for deletion on December 10th, so I only have four days to respond.

The page is https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Gary_W._Lopez. As you will see, we have been responding to editorial requests for several months. Mr. Conway stated that it was his opinion that my work was worthy of a Wikipedia article, so I am reaching out to you for help. I was informed that your fee will be $1499. How do I pay you? Shall we communicate via email, telephone, what works for you?

Thanks for you help,

Gary GW Lopez (talk) 18:48, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The information you have been given is not true. I do not offer such assistance.
See Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive1144 § Another dumb AfD scam for background. William Avery (talk) 21:44, 14 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for this heads up, Mr. Avery. So you know, the email address, links, and all other indicators appear legitimate. GW Lopez (talk) 00:15, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
GW López: They are not legitimate. It is a scam. Wikipediaafd.org domain has no relation with Wikipedia. MarioGom (talk) 21:55, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

January 2024

[edit]

Information icon Hello. This is a message to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions, such as the edit(s) you made to Alexander Zhulin, did not appear to be constructive and have been reverted. Please take some time to familiarise yourself with our policies and guidelines. You can find information about these at our welcome page which also provides further information about contributing constructively to this encyclopedia. If you only meant to make test edits, please use your sandbox for that. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you may leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 22:16, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Figureskatingfan, What on earth are you talking about? Did you not understand my edit summary? William Avery (talk) 22:22, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
William, I understand that your addition was a direct quote of Zhulin, but I reverted you because the language is inappropriate for an encyclopedia, as per WP:OM. A better way would be to summarize his offensive comments and state that he personally attacked Rippon and Wagner for their statements about the Russian ban from figure skating. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 04:43, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page stalker) @Figureskatingfan: No, the quote was already present. The only thing William Avery did was replace wrongly-used curly apostrophes with straight ones. AddWittyNameHere 05:57, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@AddWittyNameHere, I see. Nonetheless, I think the quote is inappropriate. I'm happy to make the change myself. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 06:04, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/William Avery Bot 5

[edit]

Do you have any plans to take up Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/William Avery Bot 5 again? No worries if not; I can always file a request at WP:BOTREQ. Thanks! HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 19:52, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have no plans to do so, but the code I wrote should still work, so I could run it if required. AFAIK, no agreement was reached about where a discussion should take place to reach consensus over whether the changes were wanted. I wrote it in response to a request at WP:BOTREQ, and I'm not best placed to advocate for it. Pinging @Izno: for possible input. William Avery (talk) 09:34, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Your Edits regarding Acanthopale laxiflora

[edit]

Can you please explain to me why did you change the template? The Previous template showed Kingdom: Plantae Phylum: Tracheophyta Class: Equisetopsida Subclass: Magnoliidae Order: Lamiales Family: Acanthaceae Genus: Acanthopale

and now the Names have been replaced with "clade." could please look in it and fix the issue?. Thank you ‍ TomLovesFar ‍💬 09:14, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The Speciesbox template shows a taxonomic hierarchy that is used consistently across all the articles where it is used, rather than having hierarchies that depend on individual editors opinions. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Plants/Automated taxobox system. For discussion of the hierarchy, use Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants. William Avery (talk) 09:25, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sydney

[edit]

Hey, just a heads up as I saw that you reviewed a pending change at Sydney. Consensus is that native Indigenous names of places in Australia should not be added to the infobox unless backed up by a reliable source AND that the name refers to the entire metropolitan area, and not just one singular part of the city, e.g. the name only refers to the CBD (Australian English)/downtown (American English) or in some instances, the native name only refers to an area of the city between two particular rivers, i.e. the native names are loosely defined. Cheers, Fork99 (talk) 05:49, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

But the the edit was not vandalism, therefore it deserved to be approved. William Avery (talk) 06:09, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm aware of that since I'm a pending changes reviewer too, but it would have been reverted anyways, and reviewers are allowed to use discretion to undo an edit if it would have been reverted anyways. Plus, this was actually one of the the reasons why Sydney was pending changes protected. Fork99 (talk) 21:20, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dr John Campbell

[edit]

Why is Dr John Campbell an antivaxxer, please? 88.214.184.246 (talk) 01:39, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have only made a minor style edit to John Campbell (YouTuber) and I'm not in a position to answer questions. You could ask at talk:John Campbell (YouTuber). William Avery (talk) 15:12, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Cephalopods described in 1912 indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. plicit 13:15, 26 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

IP at Curry

[edit]

William, there is an IP editor at curry who has objected violently to the infobox's claim, and then (paradoxically) to its removal. They've now extended the Lizzie Collingham quotation to 73 words, which may be problematic as a fair usage. I could revert it but I've already made 2 changes, one of them certainly a revert, and they may not take kindly if I revert something which they feel is reasonable. Would you mind taking a look? Many thanks, Chiswick Chap (talk) 12:53, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks. You may like to note that someone, very possibly the IP in question, has today created an account and has edited Curry and nothing else ... with at least one definite POV edit. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 14:17, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
