Images need checking
[edit]Hi Vijay, I added some images and text. I am not entirely sure of the ids, so please keep a watch on the illustrations added and recheck references or expert opinions. For instance I am not sure of the identification of the illustration by Robert Templeton that I added to Neptis jumbah. Shyamal 15:55, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
Silent Valley
[edit]I hoped you may be able to add some info about Butterflys in Silent Valley National Park which is the article of the month, March for Wikipedia:WikiProject Protected areas of India. I heard somewhere that the largest in the world lives there but checked it out and that's apparently wrong. Thanks==Marcus 08:34, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
The specimen has it marked as Lamproptera meges. Any id problem ? Shyamal 06:22, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Oops my mistake. Corrected it. Thanks for pointing it out. Vijay Barve 11:48, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Notability?
[edit]A tag has been placed on ATREE, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}}
on the top of the page (below the existing db tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.
For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 05:12, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Hi Vijay. Nice image ! Do you have a side view that explains the name ? Shyamal 07:21, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately I have only 2 images that I have loaded. Vijay Barve 07:28, 13 June 2007 (UTC)
- Hi Vijay, did you get a chance to handle it? I always try to do so for getting good shots of scale patterns of head from different views, underside, body dorsal and ventral views.
- Happy to see that so many indian butterfly photos being added. By your edits, starting new articles and adding so many missing photos, you have become the fourth member of the Indian butterfly endeavour, besides Shyamal, Viren and self. Welcome to the team and congrats!AshLin 13:43, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Nope, I did not handle the snake. Few people in the group will have better pictures, but I thought it was important to have some pictures to start with. Thank you very much for accepting me as a member of Indian butterfly endeavor. I want to bring in more members in the team soon so that the work really picks up momentum. And thanks for the help and support in helping me to contribute in wikipedia. Vijay Barve 06:05, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
AWB
[edit]Ever considered using Auto Wiki Bot. Will greatly simplify the kind of edits you are doing. I have got my name added but yet to start using it. Regards,AshLin 09:13, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
- Category tagging is often controversial, especially when widespread species are involved. Also categories tend to be used in a rather slipshod way by many other country users. Lists on the other hand can cite sources for why a species in included in a regional fauna for instance. Eventually, when semantic search is well established, this category system will be redundant. AWB can indeed be a good idea for now though. I can try running it if you want that done urgently. See you tomorrow. Shyamal 09:18, 24 June 2007 (UTC)
- Fine. In that case I will hold on the categorization for the time being and work on other aspects. Vijay Barve 09:23, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Moth lists
[edit]Hi, a few comments.
If you are quoting from the excel file provided by Roger Kendrick, please add the reference to that specific list. He has given the exact wording of the reference in his post.
Please consider adding sections for genera. It makes it easier to edit and maintain the list as it grows in size including navigation and placement of images.
If you make a new list, request you take the first line and end sections from one of the other lists and add them. I'm still developing the end sections. In case you make a new list which is not included in the template {{Butterflies and moths of India}}, please amend it and add the new family. You can access the template at Template:Butterflies and moths of India.
I'm updating strictly from Hampson. My data is from an imperfect OCR dump of Hampson. Since my slow internet refuses to download the massive pdfs, I hope someone will correct the specific names by cross-checking from Hampson Vol I.
I request that you take on adding the species from Roger Kendrick's Hong Kong list. We should reference each species to indicate the source, Hampson or Kendrick. We may either use symbols to indicate where the species is listed from or use footnotes. I recommend footnotes.
Regards, AshLin 19:14, 7 July 2007 (UTC)
- Very useful comments. I will follow them. I will add Subfamily and genera to the list. I will take up the checking of OCR from the pdf soon. Please show me a sample of how we should footnote the species, so that I will take that up too. Vijay Barve 07:00, 8 July 2007 (UTC)
How to refrence
[edit]Hi Vijay,
I include two species in the example given below. The citation wikitext is given in full for the first time you use it. You use a shortcut html-like tag each time thereafter.
wikitext begins...
*'''Scarce Evening Brown''' ''[[Cyllogenes janetae]]'' de Nicéville, 1887 (Bhutan, Naga Hills.)<ref name="Savela Cyllogenes">Marrku Savela's Website on Lepidoptera [http://www.funet.fi/pub/sci/bio/life/insecta/lepidoptera/ditrysia/papilionoidea/nymphalidae/satyrinae/cyllogenes/index.html|Page on ''Cyllogenes'' genus.]</ref>
*'''Branded Evening Brown''' ''[[Cyllogenes suradeva]]'' (Moore, 1857) (N.India, Sikkim - Bhutan.)<ref name="Savela Cyllogenes"/>
wikitext ends...
At the end of the article you have to make sure the following wikitext is included :-
wikitext begins...
==Cited references==
<references/>
wikitext ends...
You can see the effect of this in List of butterflies of India (Satyrinae). Giving different references for each species is quite painful and slows you down considerably, but I believe we might as well start doing it henceforth.
Regards, AshLin 11:23, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot. I will get going in this fashion. Vijay Barve 16:50, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Creation of state lists
[edit]Hi Vijay,
As per Manual of Style, the lists should have word 'butterflies' not 'Butterflies'. Please move them to correctly labelled pages using the move tab on the page. The old page and its talk page become automatic redirects to the new page and its talk page. If you need help let me know. Since you are interested in lists would you consider working on a few other important states too - Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh. States which appear in the group as well as completing the Western Ghats and South India.
Also please create a talk page every time and add the following template {{LepidopteraTalk|mid|start}} . The template puts the Project banner on the top. Why mid/start? A list of state butterflies is 'mid' importance while a national list of continental list is 'high' priority. They allow red links to come up which get stubbed and also form indexes to species lists while each state lists merely repeats these links. 'Start' because your list needs to mature before it develops into B class.
AshLin 11:53, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing our Ashwin. I have done the needful. Do you recomend Western Ghats Butterflies also to be moved to List of butterflies of Western Ghats ?
- That would be quite appropriate. AshLin 08:09, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs
[edit]Hello Vijaybarve! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to insure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. if you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 3 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Yaksar (let's chat) 23:58, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Wikimedia Stories Project
[edit]Hello,
My name is Victor Grigas, and I'm a storyteller at the Wikimedia foundation. We're telling stories of Wikipedia users, editors, donors, programmers and staff to paint a picture of who uses Wikipedia - for the 2011 fundraiser.
I am in the process of planning a trip to India to gather stories from Indian Wikipedians in face-to-face interviews (possibly on video).
My primary goal is to conduct 15-20 interviews, and hopefully enough of my interviews will make compelling stories that will effectively solicit donations from the public. These stories may also be used for other communication purposes by the foundation.
I found your userpage on a list of prolific Wikipedians and thought I’d reach out to you. Prolific editing is always a good story to tell!
If you are interested in participating, please contact me via my email:
vgrigas@wikimedia.org
Thank you for your time!

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite
[edit]Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 04:53, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Onitis kethai moved to draftspace
[edit]Thanks for your contributions to Onitis kethai. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing at this time because it needs more sources to establish notability. I have converted your article to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.
Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. TarnishedPathtalk 01:33, 7 November 2024 (UTC)
