Bot Request

I'm responding to your posting on the bot request page. What you are requesting wouldn't be difficult to write a small bot for. I although don't understand if you would like for the bot to tag articles in subcategories of Columbia University or just articles in the Columbia University category itself. --Android Mouse 02:21, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Oh, I don't know how to write bots; is it easy to do? Does it require I create a new one or is there a preexisting one that would already do it (I feel that Snowbot fits the description). I would want to tag articles in Columbia University AND all of its subcategories to be part of the WikiProject. Thanks, --Valley2city₪‽ 02:28, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
It isn't difficult. All that would be required is to write a program that makes a few requests to http://wiki.riteme.site/w/query.php and filters through to find talkpages which don't contain the template. I wouldn't mind writing it. Although as you suggested, there might be bots that can already do this. I'm not sure --Android Mouse 02:37, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I think I'll give it a shot. I have no idea what I am doing, but can it be completely programmed through AWB? I see there is a bot option in the program. --Valley2city₪‽ 02:47, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
I'm not sure, I'm pretty new to writing bots for Wikipedia. --Android Mouse 02:53, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Are you also new to Wikipedia itself? If so, welcome! Anyway, I'm not sure if I am going to go ahead with creating the bot until I do a little more research. If you want to collaborate on one, I'm game. I've just forgotten all of my C++ and Java. --Valley2city₪‽ 03:05, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, but I've been editing mostly without an account. I created one primarily so I could get involed in bot creation. I'm not a big fan of OOP, I prefer using primarily C. Although looking at the manual for AWB it can 'Append/Prepend message — Appends/Prepend the given text to the bottom of the page (talk pages only).', I'm not sure to what detail though. I'll have to download it and see what it can do --Android Mouse 03:28, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

I've been prepending through AWB, but it's just tedious to have to push the button each time. To use AWB you need to get approval first and they normally require at least 500 mainspace edits under a username, but perhaps if you show them your IP contributions they might authorize you. I have no idea. --Valley2city₪‽ 03:32, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

Oh, I was under the impression that you could set it to be more automated instead having to click for each one. --Android Mouse 03:40, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

It's semi-automated. I don't think they give users carte blanche to automate strings of edits. That's what bots are for and there are additional options for bots which I would assume involve complete automation (but then again I don't know because I do not own a bot). Take a look at the user manual to see if this is what you are looking for. Here is some information about what it can do for bots. --Valley2city₪‽ 03:46, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
I'm going to jump in and say that WP:AWB can do automated text addition to the top of talk pages, and it's completely autonomous. To get access to the automated section, you need to request approval and myself or someone else should have you ready to go within a week or so. ST47Talk 10:34, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Thanks, I set up a BRFA and let's see what happens. --Valley2city₪‽ 17:36, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

I already have a bot that does this. It can also be used to traverse the category hierarchy to find other relevant categories and tag all related articles. Another feature is that it can create a list of all tagged articles for you, to be used as a watchlist. The bot's page has links to examples and more details. Let me know if you want me to run it for you. Ingrid 22:13, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Ingrid. Please run your bot to tag untagged remaining articles in Category:Columbia University and its subcategories with WikiProject Columbia University. I'm going to be incommunicado until tomorrow night so go ahead if you wish. Thanks, --Valley2city₪‽ 23:40, 4 May 2007 (UTC)
On second thought, Ingrid, I kinda want to experience operating a bot on my own. I want to wait for the results of the BRFA before proceding with anything. If that fails then I will seek you out again. Thanks for the offer. --Valley2city₪‽ 04:17, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

I was wondering why you added Jonathan Daniels to the Columbia University WikiProject. It doesn't seem that Daniels had any connection to Columbia University. Thanks for your attention to this. Dce7 01:18, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Good call, Dce7. I didn't notice that the wrong Jonathan Daniels was tagged. It is Jonathan W. Daniels, not Jonathan M. Daniels, who famously failed out of Columbia Law School. I have since removed the WP tag. Thanks for your alertness and it goes to show that all of us can make mistakes. --Valley2city₪‽ 03:41, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

GAC backlog elimination drive

This form message is being sent to you either due to your membership with WikiProject Good Articles and/or your inclusion on the Wikipedia:Good article candidates/List of reviewers. A new drive has been started requesting that all members review at least one article (or more, if you wish!) within the next two weeks at GAC to help in removing the large backlog. This message is being sent to all members, and even members who have been recently reviewing articles. There are almost 130 members in this project and about 180 articles that currently need to be reviewed. If each member helps to review just one or two articles, the majority of the backlog will be cleared. Since the potential amount of reviewers may significantly increase, please make sure to add :GAReview underneath the article you are reviewing to ensure that only one person is reviewing each article. Additionally, the GA criteria may have been modified since your last review, so look over the criteria again to help you to determine if a candidate is GA-worthy. If you have any questions about this drive or the review process, leave a message on the GAC talk page. --Nehrams2020 01:01, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Your sig

Replace Valley2city₪‽ with Valley2city₪‽ (<span style="background: blue; color: white; font-family: Comic Sans MS;">Valley</span>2<span style="background: skyblue; color:white; font-family: Arial;">city</span>₪‽). Its down to 233 from 269 characters. Alternatively, I would suggest you consider dropping "Comic Sans MS" as it will render nothing on non-Microsoft Windows machines, and using Valley2city₪‽ (<span style="background: blue; color: white;">Valley</span>2<span style="background: skyblue; color:white;">city</span>₪‽), which will drop it to 185 characters. Cheers, Iamunknown 06:14, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Ah, thank you so much, I was working on alternatives removing the symbols from my sig, but this works even better, though I have truncated it even further. Thank you! Valley2city 06:26, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
(Edit conflict with below) I just managed to reduce the number of characters in your signature, but apparently somebody else beat me to it. Oh well. Glad you can use it now. -- kenb215 talk 16:58, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Your sig

Try this, which is under 255: <span style="background:blue;font-family:Comic Sans MS;color:white">Valley</span>2<span style="background:#8CE;font-family:Arial;color:white">city</span>₪‽. It's exactly the same sig, excapt that the 'city' bit is a very slightly different shade of blue (change #8CE to skyblue and it's still within the 255 character limit if you want it exactly the same); the reason your sig was over the limit was that it was coded inefficiently (it's possible to combine more than one style into one span tag, and if you do that you don't need font tags at all). --ais523 16:54, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

Heh, I see Iamunknown beat me to it. --ais523 16:55, 14 June 2007 (UTC)
...and I think we wrote exactly the same thing, except that I removed redundant spaces and changed the shade of blue to make it still shorter... --ais523 16:56, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

I'm glad so many people are taking an interest in my signature. I love that aspect of Wikipedia. :) Thanks everybody. --Valley2city 17:17, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

This one is identical, and only 228 chars: <b><span style="background:blue; color:white"><font face="Comic Sans MS">Valley</font></span>2<span style="background:skyblue; color:white"><font face="Arial">city</font></span></b>₪‽ Cheers, —Preceding unsigned comment added by HiDrNick (talkcontribs) 19:14, June 16, 2007 (UTC)

Excessive wikification on a disambiguation page

The accepted practice on a dab page is not to have more than one wikilink per item; people are expected to go to the listed item for additional detail. I thus reversed your (unmistakably well-meant) additional wikification of various items on the Milton page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Orangemike (talkcontribs) 13:30, June 26, 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice and I'll keep it in mind in the future. I sometimes go on wikilink sprees. Valley2city 20:45, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

July 2007 GAC backlog elimination drive

A new elimination drive of the backlog at Wikipedia:Good article candidates will take place from the month of July through August 12, 2007. There are currently about 130 articles that need to be reviewed right now. If you are interested in helping with the drive, then please visit Wikipedia:Good article candidates backlog elimination drive and record the articles that you have reviewed. Awards will be given based on the number of reviews completed. If you have any questions about this drive or the review process, leave a message on the drive's talk page. Please help to eradicate the backlog to cut down on the waiting time for articles to be reviewed.

You have received this message either due to your membership with WikiProject: Good Articles and/or your inclusion on the Wikipedia:Good article candidates/List of reviewers. --Nehrams2020 03:41, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Halivni.gif

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Halivni.gif. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

 1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add , without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
 2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast 15:50, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

WP:HL

Hi there, I noticed you had the shortcut WP:HL for Wikipedia:WikiProject Hebrew languages I just started at WikiProject of my own here. I was wondering if we could work out some kind of compromise with the HL shortcut? Stormin' Foreman 05:01, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Hey, though I have already taken WP:HL as the acronym of Hebrew Languages, there are still plenty of good redir shortcuts that are not currently taken: WP:High is still available. Sometimes the good ones are already taken, as I can attest when trying to develop shortcuts for Wikipedia:WikiProject Columbia University. WP:CU is already taken by Cleanup so I had to resort to WP:Columbia, which, though significantly longer, is much better than having to type in such a long title. I think that a short, easy to remember shortcut like WP:High should serve your purposes. Hope this helps. Valley2city 05:31, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

User page renovation

Hello Valley2city! I noticed your request to have your userpage renovated, and I will be happy to help. I am handy with Wiki-markup, and know my way around the Userboxing world. If you agree, I will create a sandbox page and make changes to your userpage there, as not to disrupt your real userpage. I will take the changes you want me to make one at a time, with your comments on how I am doing. I can offer advice, and, when you are completely satisfied with my work, I will turn the sandbox into your true userpage. No change of your signature required! No redirects! Tell me on my talk page if you accept, and also tell me what you want changed. Thank you! --FastLizard4 (TalkLinksSign) 00:39, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

Hey, yeah, I'd love that. Thanks! If you are trying to consider a color scheme, by the way, I kind of like the colors that appear in my sig. Thanks again! Valley2city 05:36, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
OK. Just tell me a little about what you want done, and I will get started right away.

WikiProject Harry Potter roll-call

Hi there. Your username is listed on the WikiProject Harry Potter participants list, but we are unsure as to which editors are still active on the project. Your name has therefore been moved to a "potentially inactive" list. If you still consider yourself an active WikiProject Harry Potter editor, please move your name from the Potentially inactive list to the Active Contributors list. You may also wish to add User WP Harry Potter to your userpage, if you haven't done so already. Conversely, if you do not wish to be considered a member of the WikiProject, leave your name where it is and it will be moved to the Inactive Contributors section. If you wish to make a clean break with the Project you may move your name to the Known to have left section. Many thanks.

Unspecified source for Image:Valley2cityhpsp.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Valley2cityhpsp.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the GFDL-self tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as article name or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 02:30, 25 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. CO2 02:30, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Hillel logo.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Hillel logo.gif. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 22:50, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Redirect deletion notice

[1] With all due respect it's not an attack page. It's a good faith redirect that I thought (a loooooooong time ago) might be useful. Please don't template the regulars, especially if you can't find the right one. No hard feelings--just thought I'd let you know. (I lean in favor of keeping the redirect, but not enough to justify any further defense.)--HereToHelp (talk to me) 23:32, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

I am leaving you this note because you have edited this article in the past. While vandal-watching today I noticed the removal by CaseyHamMD (talk · contribs) of the entire "Criticism" section. This looked to me like common vandalism, so I reverted it with the rollback tool. Checking the article history, I saw that rollback had reverted a string of 12 edits and, checking them, it was clearly not a case of simple vandalism: on the other hand, the edits showed a pattern of removing properly-sourced criticism and inserting favourable opinions which suggested that CaseyHamMD had a COI and was not editing from a NPOV. He had made one earlier edit of a similar type, which I have also reverted.

He is a new editor, first edit 24 Sep, and his talk page was blank. I have given him a standard welcome paragraph and a note explaining what I have done, outlining relevant WP policies, and inviting him if he wants his changes made to outline them on the article talk page and try to reach consensus.

As I personally know nothing about the subject, I am posting this note to editors who have worked on the article and seem to be still active, so that they can take part in the discussion and/or watch the article.

NYC Meetup: You are invited!

New York City Meetup

Next: Sunday November 16th, Columbia University area
Last: 6/01/2008
This box: view  talk  edit

In the afternoon, we will hold a session dedicated to meta:Wikimedia New York City activities, finalize and approve bylaws, interact with representatives from the Software Freedom Law Center, and hold salon-style group discussions on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects (see the June meeting's minutes and the September meeting's minutes).

We'll also review our recent Wikis Take Manhattan event, and make preparations for our exciting successor Wikipedia Loves Art! bonanza, being planned with the Brooklyn Museum for February.

In the evening, we'll share dinner and chat at a local restaurant, and (weather permitting) hold a late-night astronomy event at Columbia's telescopes.

You can add or remove your name from the New York City Meetups invite list at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Invite list.

To keep up-to-date on local events, you can also join our mailing list.
