WikiCup 2013 March newsletter

We are halfway through round two. Pool A sees the strongest competition, with five out of eight of its competitors scoring over 100, and Pool H is lagging, with half of its competitors yet to score. WikiCup veterans lead overall; Pool A's Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (2010's winner) leads overall, with poolmate London Miyagawa (submissions) (a finalist in 2011 and 2012) not far behind. Pool F's New South Wales Casliber (submissions) (a finalist in 2010, 2011 and 2012) is in third. The top two scorers in each pool, as well as the next highest 16 scorers overall, will progress to round three at the end of April.

Today has seen a number of Easter-themed did you knows from WikiCup participants, and March has seen collaboration from contestants with WikiWomen's History Month. It's great to see the WikiCup being used as a locus of collaboration; if you know of any collaborative efforts going on, or want to start anything up, please feel free to use the WikiCup talk page to help find interested editors. As well as fostering collaboration, we're also seeing the Cup encouraging the improvement of high-importance articles through the bonus point system. Highlights from the last month include GAs on physicist Niels Bohr (Australia Hawkeye7 (submissions)), on the European hare (Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions)), on the constellation Circinus (Alaska Keilana (submissions) and New South Wales Casliber (submissions)) and on the Third Epistle of John (Indiana Cerebellum (submissions)). All of these subjects were covered on at least 50 Wikipedias at the beginning of the year and, subsequently, each contribution was awarded at least three times as many points as normal.

Wikipedians who enjoy friendly competition may be interested in participating in April's wikification drive. While wikifying an article is typically not considered "significant work" such that it can be claimed for WikiCup points, such gnomish work is often invaluable in keeping articles in shape, and is typically very helpful for new writers who may not be familiar with formatting norms.

A quick reminder: now, submission pages will need only a link to the article and a link to the nomination page, or, in the case of good article reviews, a link to the review only. See your submissions' page for details. This will hopefully make updating submission pages a little less tedious. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WikiCup 2013 April newsletter

We are a week into Round 3, but it is off to a flying start, with Republic of Rose Island Sven Manguard (submissions) claiming for the high-importance Portal:Sports and Portal:Geography (which are the first portals ever awarded bonus points in the WikiCup) and Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) claiming for a did you know of sea, the highest scoring individual did you know article ever submitted for the WikiCup. Round 2 saw very impressive scores at close; first place New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and second place Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) both scored over 1000 points; a feat not seen in Round 2 since 2010. This, in part, has been made possible by the change in the bonus points rules, but is also testament to the quality of the competition this year. Pool C and Pool G were most competitive, with three quarters of participants making it to Round 3, while Pool D was the least, with only the top two scorers making it through. The lowest qualifying score was 123, significantly higher than last year's 65, 2011's 41 or even 2010's 100.

The next issue of The Signpost is due to include a brief update on the current WikiCup, comparing it to previous years' competitions. This may be of interest to current WikiCup followers, and may help bring some more new faces into the community. We would also like to note that this round includes an extra competitor to the 32 advertised, who has been added to a random pool. This extra inclusion seems to have been the fairest way to deal with a small mistake made before the beginning of this round, but should not affect the competition in a large way. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to contact one of the judges.

A rules clarification: content promoted between rounds can be claimed in the round after the break, but not the round before. The case in point is content promoted on 29/30 April, which may be claimed in this round. Motto of the Day Help Request April 2014

Motto of the Day (WP:MOTD) is in a state of emergency and really needs your help! There are not enough editors who are reviewing or nominating mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review, and this probably means that you will notice a red link or “This space for rent” as our mottos for the next weeks and months.

Please take a moment to review the nominations and nominate your own new mottos at Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/In review and Wikipedia:Motto of the day/Nominations/'Specials. Any help would be appreciated! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 09:13, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

This message has been sent by pjoef on behalf of Motto of the Day to all editors of the English Wikipedia who are showing MOTD's templates on their pages, and to all the participants to MOTD: (page, template, and category).

A tag has been placed on File:Help.pdf requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F10 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a file that is not an image, sound file or video clip (e.g. a Word document or PDF file) that has no encyclopedic use.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. MS Antonia Graza (fictional ship) - Proposed deletion

Please note that editors can remove proposed deletions simply by removing the tag; they aren't required to provide a rationale. That said, in this case I agree with you (in fact, I proposed deletion of the article less than a month prior), and would be happy to support an AFD. Alternately I'd be willing to open one if you'd be willing to support. Cheers. DonIago (talk) 19:57, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

I thought that they need to provide reason when they delete. But I would happy to support the deletion. PS I've nominated the article for deletion Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/MS_Antonia_Graza_(fictional_ship). Can you double check for me as I used Twinkle but it didn't add a page to the AFD so I had to do it manually. --Tyw7  (☎ Contact me! • Contributions) 21:51, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
I think you're all set, and I've supported the AfD. If you really want to be above reproach (or feel additional opinions would be valuable, which may be useful if the AfD gets minimal participation), you might mention the AfD at WT:FILM, but I'd say right now you shouldn't feel obligated.
I checked WP:DEPROD, and other than removing the tag, an objector isn't required to do anything else, though it's not a bad idea for them to provide some context for their contesting the deletion. It's also explicitly stated, as I thought, that once a PROD has been removed you shouldn't replace it, so I think AfD was the way to go on this one. Cheers! DonIago (talk) 13:38, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
Article's been deleted. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting with the AfD! DonIago (talk) 15:58, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

Sure! Same to you! I'm happy to report that I don't open a whole lot of AfDs myself, but I'd found this particular article dubious since the moment it was created. DonIago (talk) 14:32, 17 August 2017 (UTC)

How can I disable the AutoSign feature? It annoyingly autosigns every non article page I edit.--Tyw7  (☎ Contact me! • Contributions) 13:33, 23 May 2018 (UTC)

@Tyw7:, If you go to the Preferences link at the top of the page, you'll see a "Signature" section you can simply blank. Then there's nothing to add. I'm not exactly sure why you'd want to have the signature you obviously spent some time crafting not appear on talk pages but if that's happening without using the signature button or the tildes, then you probably have some gadget on one of your script pages. I hope this helps. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 16:46, 23 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:16, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

Avoid red-linked categories

Hello. Please can you remove Category:Tyw7's pictures from User:Tyw7/licence.css? Aside from the fact you shouldn't have red-linked categories anywhere per WP:REDNOT, such user-specific categories are generally deprecated (although there's a handful at Category:Wikipedia images by source). Partly because it suggests WP:OWNERSHIP, but also because there's more efficient ways to track your files, such as going to your Contributions and filtering by namespace. Help with Archive navigation

I am trying to set up the archive navigation and it's counting the header User:Tyw7/Archive header as an archive. How to avoid this?

See User talk:Tyw7/Archive 3 for an example. --Tyw7  (🗣️ Talk to me • ✍️ Contributions) 21:39, 8 June 2018 (UTC)

At a glance there are likely two ways to fix this:
  • Wait until you have five archives. Then the "5" should point to the "real" archive 5.
  • Rename User:Tyw7/Archive header to something without the space, say User:Tyw7/Archiveheader, and get rid of that page and the redirect. The way I understand the {{Archive nav}} template, it looks for pages with a title of "Base/Archive XYZ" and tries some fancy things with the "XYZ" part. When the only pages meeting that pattern are genuine archives, you'll likely not have the "Archive 5" which to me looks like the template's attempt to turn your header page's title into something.
I hope this helps. Huon (talk) 22:30, 8 June 2018 (UTC)
I've renamed but it still counts the header as archive 5 --Tyw7  (🗣️ Talk to me • ✍️ Contributions) 18:13, 9 June 2018 (UTC)
To me it doesn't any more. Not sure what happened; possibly the problem was User talk:Archive header, not the page in user space. Or it was just a server cache issue and it took some time for the various pages to be rendered correctly. Huon (talk) 19:47, 9 June 2018 (UTC)

For goodness sake! Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/Two days ago and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2018 July 14 both appeared in CAT:CSD asking to be deleted. You were lucky - it would have been worse if it was a recent AfD nomination - several more pages transclude the current day's log, eg. Notification concerns

If you are not already aware of the policy, please read WP:CANVASS. I notice that you have notified two users about several AfD discussions (diff, diff), but it appears that you are only notifying those that seem to agree with your views. For example, in this post you mentioned this AfD discussion, but you only notified the nominator for deletion, but did not notify the other participant (User:James500) in the AfD discussion who opined for the article to be retained. Furthermore, James500 has contributed to several of the discussions you listed in your posts, but from the Revision history for their user talk page, you have not notified them about these discussions. Comes across as overt canvassing, and please notify all interested users when sending notifications, not only those that tend to agree with your views. North America1000 11:18, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

Northamerica1000, well, James had already participated in almost all the discussion I listed. I didn't check them all so I might be mistaken. In any case, I had notified him now. And I thought that the wording used was neutral enough not to count as canvassing. --Tyw7  (🗣️ Talk • ✍️ Contributions) Please ping me if you had replied 11:23, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for providing the notification to James500. North America1000 11:59, 22 July 2018 (UTC)
I may have overreacted a bit, because yes, James500 has contributed to many of those discussions (I also have not checked them all). The lack of notifying all involved is what stood out. At any rate, thanks for being congenial. North America1000 12:23, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

Care when reverting vandalism

It's always a good idea to carefully check what you are reverting to when you undo vandalism, especially on a page which has had a lot of recent vandalism. See the image you restored in this edit. For some reason the image doesn't show when I go to that diff, I don't know why, and am not going to spend time finding out why, but the image does exist.) Deletion notifications

I've noticed you leaving messages for users to participate in various AfDs. Just curious what your method is. It doesn't look like you notify everyone in a given discussion (e.g. only select people from the first List of breakfast drinks AfD), but at the same time it doesn't look like the people you are notifying !voted a particular way, so it doesn't seem to be a canvassing thing. Just random selection? Do you keep a running list of who might be interested in what? — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:00, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Well I just notify those who participated in the first deletion (maybe I missed a few as there was tons of back and forth discussion). But I left a general notification on Talk:List of breakfast drinks so that those who are interested can go and participate. More often than not it's if the user had participated in a similiar AFD ie of a similiar topic to the current one, they get pinged. For example, I notified those who participated at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of foods by calorie, which is very similar to the breakfast drink AFD in the fact that both talks about list of food. --Tyw7  (🗣️ Talk • ✍️ Contributions) Please ping me if you had replied 14:04, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
We do have several mechanisms for deletion discussion notification (delsort, article alerts, the dashboard...). I think you will inevitably get accusations of canvassing like you did just now in the breakfast drink AfD. I'm not saying that's what you're doing, but if you're going to notify people you'll probably want to be careful that you are notifying every participant in a given discussion rather than acting like a bot to randomly select some. From your "maybe I missed a few" comment, perhaps you intended to notify everyone, in which case no big deal. :) $0.02 — Rhododendrites talk \\ 17:36, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
The reason I was notifying is to avoid a stalemate. The previous request only had like 3 editors arguing before the time ran out. I feel that there might be an WP:OWN issue going on because of all the WP:PEACOCK praising going on. Therefore, I wanted to get a wider audience of uninvolved editors. --Tyw7  (🗣️ Talk • ✍️ Contributions) Please ping me if you had replied 17:45, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

Editing the Boston Confucians‎.

Some notes on process

Regarding Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Education Not for Sale (3rd nomination), I know you had good intentions, but it's not appropriate to close an AfD that you've participated in (or opened yourself). If you want to withdraw the nomination, just strike through your nominating statement with <s>...</s> and state that it's withdrawn. Some admin will eventually come along and officially close it. That may seem a little silly, but it's the standard practice and promotes full transparency.

The other thing I wanted to mention was the DRV you deleted. Again, I'm sure you had good intentions, but we don't do that. Like the AfD, you should have just struck your argument and stated that it was withdrawn. I've gone ahead and done that. Doing it this way leaves a clean record of what happened.

Please don't go back and change anything now; what's done is done. This is just for future reference. -- RoySmith (talk) 16:17, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

  • It looks like you're going down the same WP:POINT road that DexterPointy did with adding urine to the breakfast drinks list. You're clearly adding material for shock value, complete with terrible sources -- and those that aren't terrible are using (pizza) as a surprise in order to make a point about breakfast cereals, not saying that pizza is a typical breakfast food. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 16:15, 29 July 2018 (UTC)
Well technically pizza could be considered a breakfast food as it is eaten at breakfast, commonly I should add. I found quite a few sources saying that pizza is eaten for breakfast. Heck, one source is saying it's healthier than cereal. I was going to revert the reindeer addition but somebody already reverted me previously. Anyway, sorry. And yeah I stopped adding farfetched food to the list. -- Tyw7  (🗣️ Talk • ✍️ Contributions) Please ping me if you had replied 16:35, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

If you look into the reference by Andrew D., then you'll discover that the source does not even support the claim of æbleskiver being notable/common as breakfast in the USA. - So, it's not you, it's just that some a more equal than others.

Thanks. I am doing what I should have done after I stopped reviewing AFC submissions, at least taking a break for 1 year. DGG's closure was not the main reason for this. Northamerica1000 nuked an AFD which was relisted on an article and didn't even bother to remove the unsourced text and the possible fake prizes. That's the straw that broke the camel's back. Northamerica1000 pointed to a guideline which basically says Your hoax article is very welcome on Wikipedia, and you don't even have to reference your wordpress sites!. I could make an article about a non-existent person, source it with Youtube, Facebook or Twitter (totally acceptable according to keepists) and sources that don't mention the subject. Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Martín_Deiros_(2nd_nomination). Yes, he nuked it twice. I've removed all the bad sources and unreferenced text. It now has 1 source, which tells nothing more than his name, where he lives, and his nationality. Also, [2]. Sam Sailor didn't even look at the comment that someone replaced the sources, and instead ranted about how I don't understand Portuguese. Then he says that I didn't care about looking into the sources (I did, and there were only 2 that might be reliable). » Shadowowl | talk 17:04, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict) A valid rationale for deletion was not advanced in the nomination. You did not state, for example, anything about notability, or spam, or any of the other qualifying reasons that exist for deletion. See WP:DEL-REASON for examples of valid deletion rationales. Also, you simply discussed the sources in the article in the nomination, but again, did not provide a qualifying reason for deletion. North America1000 17:13, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

WP:Canvassing concerns

I am concerned that your post here comes across as canvassing, based upon you and the user you messaged tending to !vote for deletion in articles, and nothing more. (E.g. "we agree in AfD discussions, so they are likely to agree with my stance regarding the template, so I'll notify them".) Cursory checks have not provided any evidence that DexterPointy has edited or been involved in Template:Neighborhoods of Tel Aviv or participated in discussions regarding the template's content. North America1000 15:16, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Did you not see the wider notice at https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User_talk:Valley2city and https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/User_talk:Jethro_B, et all? The message was neutral and I want to see what others may say. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 15:18, 2 August 2018 (UTC)
Still not seeing any evidence that DexterPointy has demonstrated an interest in the topic; you guys agree regarding deletion matters quite a bit; this comes across as canvassing. North America1000 15:20, 2 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi Tyw7! I apologize for suddenly dropping you like that on IRC (we were talking in the unblock channel and getting you taken care of). Either way, I'm happy to see that the issue is no longer present :-). Cheers - ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 13:24, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Maintenance tagging

Martín Deiros was tagged with {{refimprove}} when you nominated it for deletion on 30 July. You had made no previous edits to the article. Following my !vote at AFD you then tagged the article with both {{unreliable sources}}, {{BLP unsourced}} and {{unreferenced}}, and tagged it with {{db-person}} which was declined, and ~half an hour ago further tagged with {{more footnotes}} despite no gen refs being present and this being the only external link. What goes wrong? Sam Sailor 20:25, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

And well it is unreferenced since the only reference link is dead (last I checked). And there was a comment on the AFD that the book even did not mention the subject! The more footnotes was made since there are no footnote for the book. So it's hard to know what the hell that reference is trying to support. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 20:48, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

This addition of {{no footnotes}} to Vestre Hestlægerhøe, an article you also have nominated for deletion, was wrong, all the article needed was a References section and a {{reflist}}. Sam Sailor 20:37, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

I added the no foot note since the foot note all just support the fact that the mountain is in Norway and nothing else. So I'm like, OK the mountain is in Norway.....So? Do you really need three sources to say yes, the mountain is in Norway. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me)
Please actually read the template documentation and identify what you are doing wrong. If you need help, I will be happy to help you, but all it really takes is a moment of reading. Sam Sailor 21:00, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

What a coincidence, I was typing a comment on the same topic at User talk:DexterPointy when I was pinged here.
  • User:shadowowl, This second edit to comment on the editor was totally uncalled for, Such accusations will weaken your case and will be detrimental to you leading to your block. in your own interest, I would advice you to WP:DROPTHESTICK and don't do anything related to EM for the next 3-4 months. Give that guy a chance, if he is really so bad, and unwilling to improve, let someone else take him to ANI at a later date. Not you, since there will be counter allegations and at worst blocks for both parties. -
  • User:Tyw7 yes, as the closing admin said, the BOOMERANG may also deserve short block, you can ask him more at his talk page to elaborate his opinion. -DBigXray 21:16, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
  • I can leave Eastmain alone, but he chose to interfere with my CSD of an advertisement with the non-argument if an article exists for long enough, it must be good. I've reverted my accusation, thanks for telling that it was over the limit. » Shadowowl | talk 21:21, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Good call in reverting. Calling someone a "Paid promoter" without solid evidence is also enough reason for a block per WP:NPA so I would suggest you to remove that as well. yes leave him alone. AFAIK there is no IBAN between you 2, so both are free to comment on each other's AFD contribution (As long as the comment is about the edit/subject and not the editor), If the comment on the editor continues, (which I believe will be the case most likely) it WILL attract a block per WP:NPA the last ANI thread was enough warning to both of you. I personally don't want to see a block on both of yours block list, but not heeding to my advice will surely have consequences. --DBigXray 21:31, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

  • Note that, I am not taking his side, but can both of us please assume that may be he was just trying his best to actually improve that article but his efforts fell short and there is only so much you can do to improve. I dont always agree with his opinion or comments at AfDs. But he still deserves credits for trying whatever he could and I have seen sometimes he does succeed and rightly so. For everything else there is always a closing admin, ready to CSD, or Deletion review or renominate (after a reasonable gap) (even if it is 4th time. --DBigXray 20:33, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Modifying comments

Just a heads-up but it is generally considered poor form, or even against policy, to do more than basic copy editing of comments except immediately after posting. If there's already been a discussion of those comments (as there was at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/IKASI) this is especially true. Let me know if you have any questions by pinging me or leaving a message on my talk page. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 15:11, 10 August 2018 (UTC)

@Barkeep49: How's that? I've moved the addition as a comment at the bottom. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 15:18, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for moving it. WP:REDACT is the policy on this. Basically if you edit comments someone has replied to, it gives a misleading impression of what they commented on. Hope that makes sense. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 15:26, 10 August 2018 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) agree with User:Barkeep49 not following WP:REDACT makes the other person's comment appear stupid or not making any sense. You may edit your comment or even remove it altogether but not after someone else commented on it. Hi, the article Life (2007 film) you included in the bundled AfD has not had an AfD tag added on the article at all so have removed it from the AfD as the discussion is 2 days old now.You can nominate it separately if you choose and link to it from the bundled AfD, thanks Atlantic306 (talk) 18:12, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

RonBot (talk) 17:18, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

AfD improperly transcluded

Can you fix this IPs AFD https://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Lydia_Janssen --DBigXray 20:07, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) There is nothing to fix. The AFD process was never completed. The IP who posted the AFD notice has been blocked after making entirely evidence-free accusations of paid editing at WP:ANI. It was clearly done in bad faith, and the IP is in no position to complete it anyway. [3] 31.49.219.1 (talk) 20:14, 18 August 2018 (UTC)

AFD categories

hey! I'm just curious about what software you use to add the AfD categories? Twinkle? It's very inefficient for that software to add a signature every time. Just inquiring out of total curiosity, not complaining!96.127.244.27 (talk) 01:05, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

Hi you recently added the deletion discuss of the above page to the deletion sorting for Fraternities and sororities which I think is out of the scope of the project as Fraternities and sororities have nothing to do with UK University sports clubs. Maybe it was an error because anyone watching the category will be specifically interested in Fraternities and sororities. the idea of delsorting is "transcluding AFD discussions in category specific pages, that makes it easier for people find a topic they have knowledge and interest in" and it is better not to send it to categories that are not associated. Just to let you know I undid this addition. cheers --Dom from Paris (talk) 10:08, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

I thought it was related because it's a university club, which is sorta like a sonoroty. Maybe I'm mistaken. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 11:26, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
Not really, fraternities do not exist in the UK and their aims have nothing to do with sporting teams. A Fraternity is a social organisation where the members themselves recruit you because there are shared values or class or visions or you are the son/daughter of an alumni etc and the sporting teams are made up palyers selected for their playing ability by the coaches. Children's books AfDs

Hi there. I've noticed you've nominated three books in the Edge Chronicles series for deletion. I think two of them are notable and have been or will be kept, while the the third was redirected to the series. Since AfD is not clean-up could I suggest that if you plan to continue work in this area you try and redirect pages that your BEFORE suggest aren't notable to the series article rather than AfD? Alternatively, you could reach out to myself or one of the other people who work in this area to ask about notability prior to nomination. Not watching so please ping me in any response. Thanks and Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 19:09, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Barkeep49, well I did a BEFORE search and couldn't find any notable sources there. That's why I opted to AFD in case somebody has offline sources that prove otherwise.
And you can take articles to AFD to get a redirect vote. Secondly, the articles had remained reference less for a long time. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 19:39, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
@Tyw7: One can and I in fact do take articles whose outcome I think should be redirect to AfD - but only after trying a redirect and seeing if it sticks. My guess is that in these cases it would. As to the sources, I certainly under why your BEFORE for Freeglader came up empty - while my sources are online they are behind a paywall. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 19:47, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
Barkeep49, I don't think http://lookingglassreview.com/books/the-edge-chronicles-vox/ meets the definition of a non-trivial review by WP:Nbook. That series of book has at least 14 articles with similiarly no references. Should I go ahead and redirect them all? --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 19:50, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
I am not familiar with Looking Glass Review so I don't know whether it's RS (many online review sites are not) but would suggest that the length of review provided there is normally considered substantial in children's book AfDs. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 19:54, 26 November 2018 (UTC)
Barkeep49, the critieria says " "Non-trivial" excludes personal websites, blogs, bulletin boards, Usenet posts, wikis and other media that are not themselves reliable. An analysis of the manner of treatment is crucial as well; Slashdot.org for example is reliable, but postings to that site by members of the public on a subject do not share the site's imprimatur. Be careful to check that the author, publisher, agent, vendor. etc. of a particular book are in no way interested in any third party source."
So I can't really tell if that article does indeed meet the requirements. Looking at http://lookingglassreview.com/books/about/ it is probably one of those fringe cases.--Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 20:04, 26 November 2018 (UTC)

Airline notability

Just to let you know that I consider that actually operating a scheduled service makes them noteworthy, it is unlikely that that would happen without it being reported somewhere. Its just the hurdle I use to consider if these airlines are worth including. I have to say a lot of these airlines dont make it that far for various reasons so are not really noteworthy for inclusion. MilborneOne (talk) 16:56, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

WP:NCORP says "A company, corporation, organization, group, product, or service is notable if it has been the subject of significant coverage in multiple reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject." --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 21:26, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
WP:NCORP is only a guideline so I wouldnt get that worried about it, sometime you have to use a bit of common sense, my made up guideline about operating a scheduled service would still require a non-primary reference. In the end it is up to the closer of the discussion to balance the arguments. MilborneOne (talk) 21:40, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
Well WP:GNG also requires significant coverage. Thus, I respectively disagree with you. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 21:45, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
OK but GNG is only a guideline as well and doesnt always trump common sense. MilborneOne (talk) 21:49, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

Notability

You were involved in an AfD that resulted in a WP:SNOW. You might be interested in this one: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hapa Road railway station. There are currently 2,800 articles written about the 8,500 India railway stations. Two thousand of those are stubs and several hundred are single-source sub-stubs. The inclusionists point to Wikipedia:Notability_(Railway_lines_and_stations)#Stations as policy that presumes notability, but I don't read it that way. --Rhadow (talk) 15:18, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

Rhadow, ditto. I agree with you. I voted to merge. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 15:30, 30 January 2019 (UTC)

Second chapter

Hello Tyw7, my request for a redirect for Sonasan railway station, the remedy suggested by Wikipedia:Notability_(Railway_lines_and_stations)#Stations was ignored. Instead, another editor deleted the article under WP:G7. You are invited to improve a newly introduced Sonasan railway station and to look at Hapa Road railway station as an example of an article that others argue should stay. Rhadow (talk) 12:55, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

Rhadow, I am not touching that article as it was created as a WP:POINT example. I suggest you cut it out as such disruptions can cause you to be banned. I suggest you to work on the existing articles rather than creating new ones. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 13:02, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
Okay, fine, Twy7, I get it. railway station articles stay, no matter their condition. References that don't support the text, completely unreferenced articles, the whole shebang. A review of my editing history will show that I have been working to improve the quality of existing articles. It just takes a lot of work to go through every reference. Thank you for help first and your warning second. Rhadow (talk) 13:16, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
Rhadow, as I said, I think the articles need to be judged on a case by case basis. And I certainly don't think that the blanket comment that all station articles are notable is correct. I think let the first AFD and RFC run it's course. There are a few people supporting your view point, but creating articles to prove a point is disruptive and could see you getting a block, short or perminant. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 13:21, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
Tyw7, so, ultimately, the threat of a block is the tool to ensure that the consensus that all railway station articles are notable. You have stepped out of the ring, I accept that. The second AfD was terminated prematurely; you described it as WP:POINTy. If a thousand edits on railway station articles doesn't establish some credibility, then the system is not working the way it should. Rhadow (talk) 13:35, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
Rhadow, well WP:POINT means that article was purely created and then AFDed to prove a point that you are somehow correct.
That is certainly not a way to change consensus. Work within the system rather than out. And PS you have mispelt my name as twy7. I am tyw7. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 13:38, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

Rocket stubs

I had no idea when you stated "what do you suggest doing then? There's a ton of stub articles on the Nike rocket family." that there were "literally" that many, also involving many different rocket articles.
I have begun to review and tag many, especially dictionary entry articles. I have even found some so ambiguous it is ridiculous like 1.5KS35000 and 1.9KS2150. A main problem I have is that many of these "articles" are just entries from Encyclopedia Astronautica (example: Malemute) that is many times the only source so there are clear notability issues. I have no idea how large a problem this actually is because I think I have been largely only working with sounding rockets so far. Otr500 (talk) 11:13, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
Otr500, I was being cautious by not flooding the AFD with those stubs but I think a lot of them can be merged or deleted. But I don't know what would be the appropriate target. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 11:38, 13 June 2019 (UTC)
I have been looking around. Consensus at the discussion of Nike-Orion indicated merge to Nike (rocket stage). I am not convinced that would be the best location. The "booster" was used extensively in sounding rockets and is listed under Nike as sounding rocket in the Project Nike article. There are many other types (many dictionary entries), that are not Niki, that might benefit from a central location. Otr500 (talk) 01:27, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
A start is a start though as I see the Nike-Orion discussion came to the same conclusion. I can see where there can be some linking like with Nike-Malemute and Malemute. Otr500 (talk) 01:57, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
Otr500, I think there should be some clean up done with the rocket stubs. I don't see much edit history on the stubs. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 02:14, 14 June 2019 (UTC)
I suppose there may be a downside to selectively seeking improvement, and "being cautious by not flooding the AFD" (which is commendable) but sometimes the same closer may not see the intent and we end up with the Nike-Viper/Viper Dart merge. I suppose it is an improvement but will likely still remain a dictionary entry like it has since 2005. Otr500 (talk) 03:53, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

Nomination for Kevin Falk page for delation

Hello! Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Your the expert on if a page should be deleted or not. I will say that people still quite often get in touch with me from this page. Both bands mentioned here that I played in are still very much active. I was only trying to add a picture to it because there is also an adult actor with the same name and his picture was showing up when you googled my full name, Kevin Andrew Falk. I'm in the middle of a job hunt as we just moved to New Zealand so I didn't want potential employers to get confused with that adult actors picture instead of me.

Hopefully, this was informative.

I would prefer the page remain up. Thank you! -Kevin

--118.148.223.62 (talk) 23:22, 28 July 2019 (UTC)

Hiya, it seems that page was deleted as per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kevin Falk. User talk:MB asked at the Articles for deletion page since his deletion request was failing.
That said I don't know what you want me to do. Maybe an admin can chime in as I feel that what you are requesting might require someone with admin permissions. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 23:29, 28 July 2019 (UTC)
The page was "soft deleted" meaning the deletion can be reversed on request. However, to do things properly, one of you should formally request undeletion at WP:REFUND.
If it turns out that I am the admin who handles the request (possible), I am likely to restore it but move it to the draft namespace as the article is very light on references and has been tagged as such since 2010. Note that so far as I know Google does not index the draft namespace. --kingboyk (talk) 04:37, 29 July 2019 (UTC)

I thought popular culture is one where the public would be involved. Like the chip company could be well known in that community. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 19:18, 12 August 2019 (UTC)

Apologies

Please accept my apologies for my unhelpful AfD comment - I understand the confusion in the names between Western Power & Western Power Corporation now. I have been a bit tired of AfDs where users do nothing but a Google search and conclude an article is not notable (which was not the case for you), I accept I was too quick to judge in your case. Bookscale (talk) 11:41, 13 August 2019 (UTC)

Bookscale, no problem. I had a suspicion it could be notable but couldn't find the references to back it up to pass WP:GNG. And I couldn't find any guidelines that say power companies are inherently notable. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 11:44, 13 August 2019 (UTC)

nominating on behalf of IP addresses

Why are you nominating things for deletion on behalf of a single purpose IP address? The people showing up to vote delete are banned sockpuppets, so the IP address used to get you to nominate things probably is as well. I don't see any reason why an IP address with no previous edits should ever be allowed to send nominate things for deletion. If the software keeps them from doing it themselves, there is a reason for that, you shouldn't do it for them. Dream Focus 05:55, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

Dream Focus, well at that posting the IP wasn't banned. We don't have any president to check if the IP had edited before, at least none that I observed. Maybe raise a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 12:22, 16 November 2019 (UTC)

Hello! Thank you so much for your sorting work at AfD. Just a heads up on minor detail: the artist's sort is only for visual artists. Musicians need not apply.ThatMontrealIP (talk) 14:48, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

Ecobranding

Wen you CSD'd Ecobranding, I had already started an AfD, and a CSD had been declined. Can we sort this out? Thanks, Vexations (talk) 12:28, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

It was declined? I say leave it up so an admin can compare the versions. Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 12:41, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

Tyw7, Majavah requested speedy deletion (CSD G4, CSD G11) [5] on 16:41, 30 January 2020. Discospinster then declined speedy as not substantially identical [6] on 20:49, 30 January 2020 and suggested that another AfD would be necessary. I then brought it to AfD [7] on 21:07, 30 January 2020. You then re-nominated it for G4 on 02:11, 31 January 2020 [8]. I'd say we have already had an admin compare the versions. It should go to AfD, which is ongoing, but not linked from the article. Can you please agree to restore the AfD notice? Vexations (talk) 13:21, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
Vexations, erm the AFD notice is there. At the bottom of the CSD notice. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 14:33, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
Tyw7, OK, I'm just going to decline the CSD. Vexations (talk) 15:49, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

AfD proxies

Hey hi howdy. I think you may be dipping your toes into a shark tank with the proxy nominations. Armenian nationalism POV pushing is a big problem here and this may be an example of it. Also, there's no reason except competence he can't do it himself. I'd never do that for anyone, but I think minimally if you are going to do it, you should only do so if the nomination is put together in a convincing manner (citation to policy for instance). Not a warning, just a suggestion. Every edit we make is supposed to improve the encyclopedia. I'm going to snow close the one on the bio. Notability of populated places

I saw that you nominated a few populated places for deletion. Our standards for inclusion of populated places are deliberately very low. Any community that verifiably exists and/or is legally recognized automatically passes WP:GEOLAND - it does not matter if significant in-depth coverage exists. Any AfDs similar to the three you made on June 4 are likely to be WP:SNOW kept. Just a heads up. −−− Cactus Jack 🌵 23:43, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

CactusJack, fair enough. I mostly think that WP:GNG is the minimum requirement to be notable but it seems GEOLAND bypasses GNG. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 10:35, 7 June 2020 (UTC)

Deletion of Wayne Doty entry

Hi there

I got here after searching the name of a person who was the subject of a Netflix Special program. His name is Wayne Doty, and he’s a convicted double murderer awaiting execution on Florida’s death row. Not a nice individual.

I searched him up because I wanted to see if he’s still alive. I see that you’ve tagged his Wikipedia page for deletion because he’s not a notable person.

I disagree with this assertion. I think that anyone who has an hour-long Netflix special made about him is notable enough to have a Wikipedia entry. Not as notable as Stevie Wonder or Ghengis Khan, but surely a little bit notable. In addition, Doty is interesting to legal scholars because of his attempts to hasten his own execution and his rejection of legal counsel while doing so.

I respectfully submit that the deletion request for that Wikipedia page should be retracted.

Thanks Nik

Evening, what we need are multiple 3rd party independent sources writing about them, youtube is a user generated website - anyone can write/upload/comment on the site and as such this isnt normally considered a reliable source. We would be looking for mentions in mainstream media, reputable major publications in their fields or subject areas. Once we have these then they may be able to be included in the encyclopeida but this is not a guarnatee.
Can I also confirm your statement above ps thats my older brother refers to Don Trialeon being your older brother. If so you will need to read this and ensure that if editing anything related to him that you follow the guidance for declaring and editing where you have a conflict of interest.Amortias (T)(C) 20:34, 7 September 2020 (UTC)

Broken archive box

My archive box seem to be broken. It does not show archive 3. --Tyw7 (🗣️ Talk) — If (reply) then (ping me) 03:28, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

You've been around for a long time, so I'll overlook how squirrely your setup is.
Your archive box is working exactly as it was designed to work, but it may have design aspects you are not aware of. In particular, you have a file named User talk:Tyw7/archivelist which is picked up automatically by the archive template and used instead of any automated search for your actual archive pages. As it says in the template doc: If a subpage called "{{PAGENAME}}/archivelist" exists, it will be used as the central content of the box.
This gives you a few options. Perhaps the easiest is to ask for that file to be deleted. The indexer is picking up all of your archives automatically, so if this file goes away, I expect the archives template will also find them. You will lose the customized naming you had set up, but I think that would be a good thing.
But if you disagree with it being a good idea, all you have to do is update the file with your new renaming scheme to include the new archive 3. And remember to update it in the future when the bot starts a new archive. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 06:15, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

On a related note, I'm afraid I only realised after responding to your UAA report that Stevenfernandez00 hasn't edited since 2020 and, so, I'm not sure what can be done now. I mean, a block would probably be unwarranted as a purely punitive measure and the article is currently at WP:AfD, where its fate will be decided... Salvio 20:30, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
