Joseph Stalin

Please stop putting that flattering, stylized painting of Stalin. Please stop preventing me from trying to clean up text and making the article more neutral by removing other people's POV. Thanks for your cooperation. Kurzon (talk) 07:55, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Tocino, it's my opinion that you and Kurzon are in an edit war with each other over the article Joseph Stalin. I suggest that you both step back for a while from editing this article and let someone else take over editing this article. Mikaey (talk) 08:10, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
And kudos to you, but edit warring can occur regardless of whether or not 3RR is violated. 3RR is simply a measure of whether or not an edit war is going on, but it is not the only measure. Looking at the edit history shows that you and Kurzon have been going back and forth with each other, and regardless of who is to blame, I think it would do both of you some good to step away from the article for a while. Mikaey (talk) 08:21, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
Gentlemen, I've requested that Joseph Stalin be fully protected. It is now uneditable for the next two weeks. I suggest that you take the time to raise your issues on the talk page and get a consensus on what you want to change. Make your changes, based on consensus, once the protection has expired. Mikaey (talk) 16:40, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
Hello there, I have unprotected the article again, however I will warn both of you that if you continue to edit warn, you maybe blocked for violating the 3RR rule. Please discuss conflicts on the talk page of the article so that protection/blocking isn't required. Thank you, The Helpful One 22:24, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

2009

I'm sorry but i don't agree with that for the fact that she was the world's oldest person for 4 or 5 months so there would only be around 3-4 people a year. They aren't all the oldest people at the same time 'cus they die which is added to it e.g. Maria de Jesus (blah blah) oldest person untill time of death. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hawkania (talkcontribs) 18:37, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

I don't understand the eagerness to include De Jesus. The other Oldest person in the world title holders, weren't pushed on their respective YEAR articles. GoodDay (talk) 23:29, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
It's probably a recentism thing. I wonder if those who favour 'inclusion', are prepared to add more names to 2009 if a few more Oldest Person title holders pass-away this year. GoodDay (talk) 23:41, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

Honestly, I think the best suggestion that I could give you is to get in touch with User_talk:Kurzon and discuss the changes that the both of you would like to make. I think cooperation and collaboration would probably be the best way to prevent an edit war. Thanks, Matt (talk) 01:41, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Albanians in Serbia

I see that you added the material I recently removed from this article. I don't believe it belongs here, but I wanted to talk to you about it before reverting. The material was improperly copied into this article over a year ago from Albanians in Kosovo. I understand the political overtones in having the material in one article v. another. But we can't have the same material in two places. I'm open to suggestions on how to resolve this. Thanks! // Chris (complaints)(contribs) 22:08, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Your comment in the Serbian-Americans talk page

I was checking that talk page to see if anyone had maybe listed new data to a question I had posed a few months ago and I saw your comment there. I thought it was interesting.

I've never before seen someone else write about an "American ethnicity" the same way I have thought about it. I know that the Southeast has the greatest number of people declaring their ethnicity as American, but I think this ethnic label would apply to the majority of racially White Americans and not just those in the Southeast. The Americans (outside of the South) that descended from pre-20 c. immigrants from the UK, Ireland, and Germany seem to have substantially = meshed together into a "White ethnic group", not just racially, but ethnically as well.

The only cultural differences between ethnic Whites of the North (where 19c. immigrants mostly settled) and those of the South is that the South still experiences religion and social conservatism as very influential forces on daily life. Where for the more recent ethnic Whites, this is not the case (e.g. in the North). So, the distinctive cultural aspects of the South have not been adopted by the ethnic Whites of the North even with several centuries having passed. I do not want to make false generalizations, however this is my sense of the average situation in those regions based on my travels and time spent living here.

The areas where distinct ethnic identity has been conserved is in the major cities. The city-centred ethnic groups in the US have preserved a substantial part of their culture in absence of preserving their language (for the most part). A few well-known examples would be the Irish- and Italian-Americans of the Northeast. So long as their numbers are high enough to have a large enough community - cultural traditions endure. What I am getting at is that so long as a Ukrainian-American stays in a major city s/he has no reason to be forced into completely adopting a new ethnicity. S/he won't have to abandon the culture of his/her community. If s/he were to move to an area in the Southeast, then it would be a completely different story.

I'd like to give you a further illustration - the Poles of Chicago. Most arrived somewhere between the 1850s and 1940s or so. Many have had families there for well over a century. There has been very limited migration out of Chicagoland for this period and the Polish community there has remained extremely strong. So there is not much past observation that would suggest that cities are only an entry point from which ethnic communities later break-down as they go their own ways.

I've written all of this to demonstrate how the "ethnic Americans" and people who ethnically (not racially, but ethnically) identify as "White" are distinct ethnically from the more recent (post-1850) European ethnic communities in the major cities. I find it all very interesting. The only problem that sometimes arises is when individuals do not make the distinction between an "Ameican"/"US citizen" and an "ethnic American" and in so doing sometimes end up labeling certain individuals as being un-American. These people, that do not make the distinction, show frustration when a person does not abandon his/her culture and adopt their own. This is of course on an individual-by-individual basis and I would not generalize this in any way to any region or sub-region.

I've seen ethnic hostilities projected towards myself or family/friends from people of all sorts of backgrounds. I've seen it demonstrated by Southerners, New Yorkers, and even Jews in South Florida. By the way, most of the time my ethnicity (and that of family/friends) would have been indeterminable by those people. I'm saying this because I don't want to suggest that any particular regional group of Americans is more racist/discriminant than another region. I've spent a lot of time in South Florida and the racist attitudes that come from some of the people there have been really surprising at times especially when you take into account that many of those racists that I have come across would themselves been the target of racism less than 50 years ago. Its all unfortunate and these types of racist, discriminatory, and nationalistic attitudes are probably present in most countries.

The good part about our differences is that ethnic Americans and newer Americans have no trouble in cooperating with one another when it comes to maximizing profit. This is not the case in say many areas of the former Yugoslavia or in the areas where ex-Yugoslavs have settled throughout the Western world.

Sorry for the lack of brevity. Your comment was interesting and I wanted to expand on it. Also, I want you to know that none of the above is meant to be offensive towards any group or the US or the US as a whole. Usually when I do say something negative about this country it is only in attempt to point out what can be done to make it better and the solution almost always comes down to changing attitudes and beliefs...

Cheers.

Hi,

you might want to reconsider the wisdom of linking the map from your userpage. You wouldn't want to be confused with a Great Serbian Chauvinist on Wikipedia. I've noticed the map you're linking from your userpage. It shows borders based only on ethnicity... well almost. There must be some mistake with Kosovo: it should be a part of Albania on such a map :) --DIREKTOR (TALK) 17:59, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Hey dude, I applaud your initiative with adding the kits to the above article, but I'm not sure that the kits have actually been decided yet. IIRC, when the home kits clash, they toss a coin to see which team gets to choose what kit they want to wear. So it could still end up with Man Utd wearing red and Barcelona wearing yellow. – PeeJay 21:27, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Hmm, I guess I could be wrong, but it may still be best to hold off on adding the kits until we know for certain which kit each team will be wearing. Also, according to this, the United away socks do have a blue line down the sides. I think the reason why they look so odd on the United article is that the length of the socks in {{Football kit}} was changed recently. – PeeJay 21:48, 6 May 2009 (UTC)
Ah, you are right. Regulation 18.03 seems to confirm that the designated "home" team always wears home colours, and if there is a clash the "away" team must wear alternative colours. – PeeJay 21:50, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi

Could you do me a favour please? Tell these POV pro Kosovo editors that the article "Kosovo" should not be only about the Republic of Kosovo. You will see the discussion here Talk:Kosovo#Split_article. I've tried telling them that Pro Serbia editors will never agree to the Kosovo article been only about the Rep of Kosovo because that is biased and POV. I've said that it must include that it is disputed and that Serbia still claims it. Also it must include UNMIK / EULEX too. Will you just get them told please? I think they are just kids in to be honest. Regards Ijanderson (talk) 14:21, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Serbia Map

You are the third person to revert the change I made to the map on the Serbia article, without commenting. If you do not explain why you are removing the map, and discuss it on the talk page, your edits may be mistaken for vandalism. Discussion on the talk page seemed to indicate wide support for denoting the region of Kosovo on the map in some way. Prodego talk 18:01, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Talk:Serbia#Locator_map, and the newer, unopposed proposals at Talk:Serbia#Kosovo and Talk:Serbia#The new map is unacceptable seem to disagree. I saw no disagreements, and I made the edit. There was a week where you could have commented about your objection, but you chose not to. Please discuss it now. If you aren't willing to support your edits via talk page discussion then they mean nothing. Prodego talk 19:17, 12 June 2009 (UTC)
Wikipedia is based on consensus. That means editors need to work together. I don't really care what the map on the Serbia article is. But I saw discussion supporting it, asked for opinions, and no one gave me any. It seems reasonable to mark Kosovo, since it is excluded from some of the statistics in the infobox, but formal UN boundaries carry a lot of weight too. As I mentioned, I don't care what happens with the map. But I do care if people are reverting other editors changes without comment. If you undo someone's edit, you discuss it with them, or on the talk page, period. It is highly disrespectful to do otherwise. Prodego talk 20:21, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your involvement. It is very helpful to have more than one view represented in discussions, particularly as I am not an expert in the content matter, so I don't have much of my own opinion as to what is appropriate. Prodego talk 00:51, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

I like to think of the wiki process as a bouncing spring. Ideas, decisions, and arguments bounce back and forth, side to side, slowly but surely loosing energy as both sides compromise, eventually settling somewhere in the middle (ideally, at perfect neutrality). This is why so many highly controversial subjects (with lots of editors with lots of different opinions) have very good articles, the metaphorical spring moves much faster, and thus, settles much faster, whereas more out of the way articles with few editors might bounce back and forth very slowly, taking years to calm down. In the case of the map, at some point there is going to have to be a decision for all these types of article about how to deal with disputed regions. More generally, it isn't so important to deal with everything at once, and create a perfect article, with perfect consensus. Piece by piece, edit by edit, each article will get there, so long as there is discussion to beget compromise. Look at the short term, the single issues, and gradually there will be less and less issues left. Prodego talk 05:26, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Moving articles while semi-formal discussion is underway

Please do not move a page to a title that is harder to follow or move it unilaterally against naming conventions or consensus, as you did to 2009 Honduran constitutional crisis. This includes making page moves while a discussion remains under way. We have some guidelines to help with deciding what title is best for a subject. If you would like to experiment with page titles and moving, please use the test Wikipedia. Discussion was rather clearly underway. Thank you. Bkalafut (talk) 06:55, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Bkalafut, don't template the regulars.
SqueakBox's ninja move was invalid, and nothing should have been gained from it. It was "unilaterally" done, "while a discussion remain[ed] under way." There had been no consensus for the move. Tocino was right to revert it.
When editors cheat and get away with it, editors -- that want the rules followed -- may leave.
"Disruptive editors harm Wikipedia ... exhausting the patience of productive editors who may quit the project in frustration when a disruptive editor continues with impunity."[1]
I note that -- an hour and twenty-four minutes after SqueakBox accused me of having done something I hadn't done -- you jumped onto my talk page to accuse me of having done it,[2] before I even had a chance to thoroughly refute the allegation, which I did.[3] -- Rico 19:16, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Considering the way both the attempt on the noticeboard to scrap NYT et al as RS and the attemp on WP:ANI to involve WP:BLP were going (ie very badly for the coup defenders), I would say you were right. By the way, when I saw it change, I wanted to revert immediately, but could not. Some trick was used, I suppose. Another argument for not giving in to cheating. So, no criticism from me, but congratulations because you managed to do what I could not.--Paul Pieniezny (talk) 08:44, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Tocino. My name is Mike Lyons and I am a doctoral student at Indiana University. I am conducting research on the writing and editing of high traffic current events articles on Wikipedia. I have noticed in the talk page archives at 2008 South Ossetia war that you have contributed to the editing or maintenance of the article. Re: Debrecen

Hi. The article says: "UEFA does not allow Debrecen to play their home matches in Str. Oláh Gábor Stadium due to the weaknesses of that. So if Debrecen will be promoted to the next round after match against Kalmar then they will be forced to play home matches in Ferenc Puskás Stadium, Budapest. This decision was posted on Debrecen's website. UEFA-supervisors were displeased by the original place on Wednesday (against Kalmar first-leg), too. After the supervisors' report UEFA informed Debrecen's Direction that they are not allowed to held other matches at that stadium (Oláh G.). So if Debrecen can qualify for 3rd Qualification Round then they must play their coming matches at Ferenc Puskás Stadium."

I know, that the match against Tallinn was held at Debrecen's stadium but that was because Ferenc Puskás Stadium was in a final status of constructions. I hope you can understand this translation and it'll be enough for you. Hi, --145.236.156.239 (talk) 21:19, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

There's also been a fair amount of sneaky vandalism -- changing small details like the numbers of caps etc. Once it's protected, you might consider sifting through that lot, or else reverting to an earlier version before the present madness began and then building up the transfer story again from scratch using reliable sources. As I'm sure you now, it's often difficult to distinguish legitimate info from vandalism (or even good-faith but unsourced changes) when this kind of thing has gone on for a few hours. --RrburkeekrubrR 16:49, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

28 was probably right, then. While a page is under attack, you sometimes have to take your best guess about whether an edit is vandalism, and then go back and check your own work afterwards. In this case, User:Jenningson had previously vandalized this statistic here and have vandalized the article several other times, so I (wrongly) assumed that this edit was also vandalism. Thanks for catching it. --RrburkeekrubrR 17:51, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

The article Kade Weston has been proposed for deletion because under Wikipedia policy, all biographies of living persons created after March 18, 2010, must have at least one source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners or ask at Wikipedia:Help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 17:52, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited 2014 Crimean protests, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Crimean Tatar (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Ukrainian names are used for places in Ukraine by English language media and scholars these days

In English Wikipedia we do not use Kharkov but Kharkiv (to reflect common English usage & for consistency within this article + others + the Wikipedia article on Kharkiv). The same goes for Dnipropetrovsk and Luhansk. I also noticed that media in English but from Russia still uses the Russian names for these cities (Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk and Lugansk), but in doing so produce faulty English articles. — Yulia Romero • Talk to me! 23:51, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

Interview request

Hi Aleksandr,

I'm a PhD student at Oxford University and long-time Wikipedian studying breaking news articles on Wikipedia and am working on a new paper about how Wikipedians decide which sources to add to breaking news articles with User:Madcoverboy. I would love to talk to you in general about your wiki work and about sources and references in particular since you have done such great work on the Crimean crisis article.

We're testing out a new methodology for visualizing a user's sources over time and will show you some network diagrams of all the sources and the ones you added in particular to the 2014 Crimean crisis article as a way to discuss source practice.

Do you think you could spare 30 minutes over Skype next week - preferably Wednesday or Thursday? I'm in Oxford (GMT). You can email me on hfordsa at gmail dot com.

Looking forward to chatting! hfordsa (talk) 18:52, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

misleading edit summaries

Re [5]. Please don't make controversial and substantial changes with misleading edit summaries. That edit wasn't just an "updated", it was a blanking of well sourced material. Please be aware that the article is subject to discretionary sanctions.Volunteer Marek (talk) 15:23, 12 April 2014 (UTC)

Misleading edit summaries, yet again

These changes (here and here) made to the Donetsk People's Republic article were not "updated" as per your edit summary. They were actually a refactoring of the infobox content and blanking of reliable sources. Please do not engage in tendentious editing practices. --Iryna Harpy (talk) 05:16, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Template:Donetsk People's Republic topics requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about something invented/coined/discovered by the article's creator or someone they know personally, and it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 18:57, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

the tag has, of course been removed, and the template has been protected. DGG ( talk ) 20:05, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

Nomination for deletion of Template:Donetsk People's Republic topics

Template:Donetsk People's Republic topics has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for discussion page. Aleksandr Grigoryev (talk) 19:38, 10 February 2015 (UTC)

Greetings! Since you previously introduced a proposal to move Hillary Rodham Clinton to Hillary Clinton, would you like to help draft a new proposal on this topic at Talk:Hillary Rodham Clinton/April 2015 move request? Since some editors have objected to a new move request on the assertion that there has been no change since the last inconclusive request, it would be particularly helpful to find newer evidence (arising within the past nine months) in support of such a proposal.

This proposal is likely to launch about a week or so after the closure of the current Village Pump discussion on whether another move request should be permitted, if that discussion produces a consensus in favor of permitting another move request. Cheers! bd2412 T 18:58, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
