DB's message

Currently it says "add {{bots|deny=DASHBot}} to somewhere on your talk page," and that sounds pretty iffy, grammatically speaking. Shouldn't it be "add {{bots|deny=DASHBot}} somewhere on your talk page"? The best, Lәo(βǃʘʘɱ) 19:38, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Album review move: I am starting to feel guilty

Hi Tim. It's now a few weeks ago since I emergency-stopped DashBOT performing the album review move requested by the WP:ALBUM project and I am starting to feel bad about it. I do sincerely hope that I didn't unintentionally hurt your feelings with this action. I can assure you that I had the best intentions, and I have been doing my best to provide guidance in resolving the outstanding issues. I certainly do hope that you are decided to stay on board. It's a big implementation for the project (definitely the biggest since I joined 2 years ago) and we can't do it without the assistance of someone like you. In best cooperation. – IbLeo(talk) 17:01, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

Haha, no I'm a big boy. You have been supremely helpful. Just the fact that you did not use all CAPS was somewhat of a blessing. I will try to get to fixing the bugs, I have been busy lately. Sorry for the delay, and again thank you for the help, Tim1357 (talk) 17:11, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
That's good to hear, a real relief for me! No, I never write in CAPS no matter what state I'm in :-). Sure we all do have a life away from WP that sometimes need a bit of attention, so I sympathize with you on that point. Nevertheless, I hope you get DashBOT going on this soon—I noticed that at least one editor has started moving reviews back into the infobox! Please drop a word on the project page when you start DashBOT, I think other members would be interested to follow the progress. Cheers. – IbLeo(talk) 19:17, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
I finished coding the fixes, I need to test them now. Tim1357 (talk) 03:04, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Sweet music to my ears :-). Let me know if I can be of any help. Cheers. – IbLeo(talk) 06:12, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Do you have a target date for when you will be able to restart the bot in the article space? Not trying to pressure you, just curious... – IbLeo(talk) 10:05, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

Screenshot of abusive use of Wikipedia material

{{helpme}} Dashbot has tagged File:Wokiwiki-Main-2010-01-15.png as "non-free image that is not being used in Wikipedia article space." It is actually a screen shot of a site that serves (or served) subtly adulterated copies of Wikipedia articles, using the Wikipedia name; an activity that could be very damaging to Wikipedia. The screenshot was uploaded to serve as evidence for a complaint filed two months ago in the page Wikipedia:Mirrors_and_forks/Vwxyz. (It is unclear whether the site has been taken down in the meantime.) I could keep a copy in my local computer but there are several inconvenients with that; uploading to Wikipedia seems a better solution. So what shall one do to stop the file being deleted in such cases? All the best, --Jorge Stolfi (talk) 14:27, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

Actually, I have no idea what you should do. Perhaps try archiving it with WebCite, and providing a link to the copied website. In anycase, I asked for comment from people in the wikipedia-help channel. Maybe he or she can give you a better answer. Tim1357 (talk) 16:02, 14 March 2010 (UTC)
I don't think that the image can be kept on Wikipedia. The problem is, if it does contain copyright material, we could only have it under the non-free image policies, which means it would need a 'fair-use rationale'. For that, it would have to be used on an actual article, so that we could give a justification for its use. I understand your dilemma, but I think that it falls outside the project scope, as it is not for an article. I think you will have to link to it elsewhere. This is my opinion on the matter; if you want to check it further, please ask on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Sorry I couldn't give a more positive answer.  Chzz  ►  20:37, 14 March 2010 (UTC)

bot notifications

Hi. Your bot recently notified me a bunch of times about orphaned images; see here. Thing is, I only uploaded reduced versions of these and tagged them to have to old revs deleted. As such, I don't want to be pestered by the bot. Personally, I favor much higher standards for fair use rationals and many articles that don't properly meet a reasonable notability standard sport images with dubious FU claims that are often inappropriately over-sized, so these orphanings are a sign that others are also working to prune the unencyclopaedic dross that the anybodys inflict on the project.

I'd like to opt-out of your notifications, at least for images I didn't not upload the original of, and would suggest that such things be on an opt-in basis.

Also, I went looking off your bot's user page for where these notifications were approved and did not find it. I did notice the FU-resize task and read that discussion and feel that this is a bit dodgy for a bot to be doing. I see there's some discussion about the issue but that it's currently approved. There is little justification for fair-use images beyond the reasonable default sizes used in article space; typically 180px to 220px wide. I often resize images and I will generally resize images that are over 300px wide to 250px wide; sometimes narrower if the image is quite tall. For higher res, interested readers should follow a link to an off-site source or, in the case of a screen-cap, go buy a copy of whatever or learn to use Google Images.

Alan Isler and Les Percussions de Strasbourg

Hi Tim you questioned my article on Alan Isler - fair enough for my failure to meet certain guidelines: I tend to get it up and assume others will go forward, especially for important writers. Having said that, can you help me with another article, on Les Percussions de Strasbourg, a major performance group for classical music in France? I just basically translated the French article. How do I show this? Thanks Peter —Preceding unsigned comment added by Peterbruce01 (talkcontribs) 23:13, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

Paul Newman (linguist)

Hi, Tim1357,

DASHbot has left a message on my talk page saying I created an unreferenced article Paul Newman (linguist) and should add references. I am curious what kind of references you think this article needs to be properly referenced. This article includes a bibliography of 9 books by its subject, the linguist Paul Newman, contains 11 links to other Wikipedia articles, and contains 3 online links, 2 of them to articles on the author from reliable sources (one of them a website at the University of Indiana, another a website at the University of Hawaii), and finally an interview with Paul Newman from the scholarly journal Semiotica. The article text also contains direct references to published works, in the form "Modern Hausa-English Dictionary (1977)" and The Hausa Language: An Encyclopedic Reference Grammar (2000)". This provides enough verifiable material to make up a valid article on a person. Furthermore, the article contains few or no controversial statements and certainly no personal observations, so it is not in any kind of danger zone. I suggest your bot be fine-tuned to avoid these "false positives".

However, if you think there is some other kind of reference that is required (a reference to a paper scholarly journal, perhaps?), I would be grateful for the information.

Cleanup listings

Hi Tim, I've just seen User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects, and I thought I'd point you to Wikipedia:Bot_requests#User:WolterBot, because having done that bot for unreferenced BLPs, it ought to be straightforward(ish) to do variations of that for other maintenance categories. I think this sort of thing is sorely needed, to provide wikiprojects with up-to-date To Do tasks which help keep them alive. Of course there are quite a few maintenance categories and presenting tasks from them in a friendly way is going to be more of a challenge; maybe a complete listing is actually not called for, so much as presenting a limited, regularly updated selection of relevant cleanup tasks. What do you think? cheers, Rd232 talk 17:31, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

I would like to see the focus remain just on uBLPs for now, but if/when we see some significant progress on clearing the backlog, then we could define a list of the most important clean up categories - (maybe just BLP related - the last WP:Australia Wolterbot list had 108 sections in total!), such as BLP refimprove, NPOV disputes and add them as selectable switches in the signup page - uBLP=yes (default to yes if not specified), BLPrefimprove=yes, NPOV=yes etc and have the bot output them into sections. If Wolterbot can be recovered and run by someone, it's would be goof to have as a complete, monthly total cleanup list, but the daily list is vital for the most important cats. Are computing resources - server time etc - likely to be significant for these tasks - even if it's run on hundreds of projects, or is that fairly irrelevant - just your time to do the initial coding/debugging?The-Pope (talk) 18:11, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
How do projects get added to these BLP alerts? I've been looking to get a list drawn up for WP:WikiProject Athletics. No doubt, a lot of unreferenced BLPs reside in this area. Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)Join WikiProject Athletics! 10:51, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
Thats a good Idea. Ill look around for some of wolterbot's code, but If i need to code a new one, what are the maintenance categories that you want listed? (Example: Category:All articles needing copy edit). If you could generate a list for me, it would be helpful. Other then that, it is not too much work, just a few more lines of code. Tim1357 (talk) 10:54, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
I hadn't really thought about it in detail. In principle, all of them! Perhaps initially a selection of different types of task (eg wikifying, NPOV dispute, references improving). Rd232 talk 16:04, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Capitalized first letter

☒N the 'i love' regex. Tim1357 (talk)
Capitalized first letter "I Love" or "I Hate" indicate a proper noun that should be excluded from the regex. Sole Soul (talk) 06:12, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
No, that doesnt work, because we still want to match things like 'I LOVE JHONY DEPP'. I just reduced the points given to that regex. Tim1357 (talk) 17:25, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
But that is not capitalized first letter. It is highly unlikely that a vandal would bother capitalize first character. The other false positive "Dude" is also capitalized first letter. Sole Soul (talk) 21:20, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Fair use on images

Hello,

I updated the page for Dunstable Town F.C. as part of my duties on the committee to run said football club. The badge has no trademark, and if it did surely I'm in a position to permit its use, and was created by myself. I've received a message threatening to delete the image to do with declaring it free to use.

Could you offer some guidance on the issue, as I've uploaded several images I've created/enhanced concerning clubs related to us which again have no trademark.

Hi Tim, It's been a few days since I posted the trial completion and subsequent verification. Is there anything that is holding off the bot approval? Please advise. Thanks. Ganeshk (talk) 01:09, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Many thanks for the approval. I am not too happy about the condition, but I understand the reasons you did that. I will come back to BAG to appeal it once the bot has a track record of creating good articles (may be in six months). Thanks again, Ganeshk (talk) 11:51, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
Hello, I have a question. But we can Request for approval for other Ganeshbot task? Gastropods have few hundred families? Should/can we request for approval for all of those families? And separatelly or all at once? If not, then I (as an individual) do not need that limited approval at all. Your theory, that "Wikiproject would be swamped" is not appropriate. This was request for approval for the only one genus. They are placed in only one category. This is very large genus consisting of over 600 species. This is uncomparable with other animals that are people usually familiar with. There are definitely much more areas, where Ganesbot will need to be used. This is a free encyclopedia so why should we be forced to work alphabetically when we wish to work efficiently? I do not know what other members will do, but I will not even start neither checking nor improving what Ganesbot made until it will be finished all. Compare it with previous tasks of Ganeshbot. Would it be usefull to start only few stubs of cities in a limited area of India in alphabetical order? If still not approved, please, move my protest to a proper place. Thanks. The optimal process would be like this: approved Ganeshbot for all gastropod-related articles from that certain source under supervision (we can not use all Ganesbot's abilities immediately anyway, we have to check gastropod related things - like taxonomy - first) of gastropod project members, not under Bot project members. And this is only one wikiproject(!) that you are restraining in a very limited scope of the project. Will not have other wikiprojects related to all animals the privilege to use Ganesbot's "skills" at all? --Snek01 (talk) 13:09, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
I have also made a comment there [2]. --Snek01 (talk) 15:31, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

DASHBot tagging uploader

Hi Tim. First off, thank you for your contributions in bot creation. Tedious tasks are an inherent part of the wiki, and your work makes everything much easier. Recently DASHBot tagged my talk page about the orphaned fair-use file File:Jollygoodfelon.jpg. I was not the original uploader of the file, but rather I reduced the resolution of the file to comply with fair use policy. The original version was deleted, which is probably what caused DASHBot to tag my page. Would it be possible to make the bot look into the file history and tag the original editors page instead? I know it's not a huge deal, but I'm seldom interested in the article these files are used in, whereas the original uploader most likely is. Thanks for your time. Your bot has just paid me a visit, saying, "Thanks for uploading File:Arthur Schimdt.jpg. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed." Well, it's orphaned because I removed it from the article, because it was removed from DYK. There is no rationale given on the article. Thank you for uploading File:DASHBot_image.jpeg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Chris G Bot (talk) 00:21, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Tim, I added some content to this page, but the literary box with the cover of the book was already part of the page, not my addition. I do have a question, though. Since the text is now public domain because of the publication date of the book, wouldn't the image of the cover be public domain as well? EDSClikes2hunt (talk) 18:22, 7 April 2010 (UTC)

The best idea would probably be to just use a tamplate and let anyone edit it as they see fit. Less job for you Tim. Rettetast (talk) 12:37, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Great Idea: On its next run, the bot will use this template as its message template. {{{1}}} is the name of the Template/Category and {{{2}}}, if used, signifies that the list was generated based on the the Wikiproject's template. DashBot

Hi, I appreciate the reminder from the DashBot.
But, I have found a more appropriate place for the orphaned image, and now the orphaned image template can be removed.
Can I do it myself or do you have to since it was your Bot, which corrected the then-image problem but is now fixed?
How do I note that the orphaned photo has found a "new home" to the Naked Idol (TV movie) article?
Thanx!

No, not at all!

I am not frustrated by you at all, I am VERY pleased by the work you have been doing! I am SO sorry you read my comments wrong. My deepest apologies for the grievous misunderstanding! Okip 00:29, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

If Okip is not then I am. Tim I know your a volunteer, but there has to be a basic level of interaction. Answering questions. Explaining how things are suppose to work. Beta testing things so that it does work. The bot stopping when it's suppose to stop etc. These are things that are to be understood from a bot and operator. The delays of the DASHBot Wikiprojects not working or not working in an understandable manner is frustrating. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 00:56, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I too would be frustrated. What I would appreciate from you is a wishlist. Some sort of list of things I can do to make the whole process run smoothly. Thank you all for your patience. Tim1357 (talk) 02:10, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Tim - I think we just need to bot restarted and then we can see which projects still work using the cat method and which work using the template method and then either move them required or get the projects populate their "articles" cat. I had noticed, however, that some of the cat page ones, such as Category:Sports and games work group articles at Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Sports and games/Unreferenced BLPs hadn't been updated for over a week before all of this happened. SunCreator, apart from the odd one or two, the whole template method addition was done because people were too stubborn to make their project compliant with how V1.0 of this bot worked - it was working perfectly on all of the Australian projects. Tim was nice enough to build V2.0 after being distracted by V1.1 (category wildcards) for a while. Okip probably made an error in trying to migrate every project over to the template style, but we're all just trying to provide a tool that helps to get a job done. And I made my mistake today by posting first, reading second.The-Pope (talk) 13:41, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Tim,
  1. I like you to answer outstanding questions on your talk page. User_talk:Tim1357#DashBot_working.3F and User_talk:Tim1357/Archive_4#Chess_BLP.27s.
  2. Explain why the bot doesn't run daily or any seeming regular basis. What can be done(if anything) to get it to run on a particular project.
  3. Explain what the difference is between using a category, a wildcard and a template selection. How you would go about working out what is appropriate for a WikiProject and why. Then when decided where and what you add to the project list .
  4. Take some actual projects and get them to work(consider this a beta test). Wikipedia:WikiProject_LGBT_studies/Unreferenced_BLPs, Wikipedia:WikiProject China/Unreferenced BLPs, Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Military biography/Unreferenced BLPs seem diverse useful examples that currently don't work.
  5. Amend the message when no unreferenced BLPs are found, to say the bot didn't find any and explain what it look for (not to say there isn't any which in most cases is factually incorrect). Alternatively(and best) give a \notfoundpage where editors can amend the wording in cases nothing is found.
  6. Add the WikiProject Unreferenced BLP list creation in the User:DASHBot#Tasks as currently I don't believe it's listed. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 14:29, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
SC, for #3, see User_talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects#Instructions.The-Pope (talk) 17:23, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Those instructions are useful. What happens in situation (which I think is common) where there is no category nor any template that contains all the articles related to a WikiProject? WP:CANADA for example? Regards, SunCreator (talk) 20:20, 12 April 2010 (UTC) Maybe I am wrong seems Canada is done via Template:WikiProject Canada. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 20:23, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
Response
  1. The bot doesn't update each page daily because the lists don't always change daily. The bot generates the list every night, but only updates the wiki version if there is a difference.
  2. I am trying to phase out the use of the categories. I have automatically moved 200 of them using a simple script. The other 100 or so will have to be done by hand or with a smarter process.
  3. I will redirect User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects to User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects/Templates so that User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects is the secondary option.
  4. I will add more in-depth messages for when a list is empty.
  5. I believe everything is working well now. Please check with your wikiproject's page to see if that is correct. I have checked the example pages that you provided and they all seem to be working well.

Tim1357 (talk) 01:49, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks a lot Tim, I'll try to compare the full list to a compilation of the Dashbot generated lists and try to work out which projects are missing - or are there just a bunch without projects? I think we need to keep some cat based ones, as some subprojects don't have their own template, they use a master project template with a parameter = yes qualifier, so I wouldn't hide the non-template list yet. I've resorted the category list to make it easier to see what's what - does having spaces, or would even having subheadings affect the bot's performance?The-Pope (talk) 13:13, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

CRC Dashbot

Dashbot-1 stopped responding again. The following is the last active line I saw, in case it helps:

Before that, everything was running smoothly. It's not like it slowed to a stop, it just came to a grinding halt. I see nothing else around it that looks unusual, either, so I'm not sure if it's something IRC-side that triggers the failure. Hopefully your logs might be more revealing. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 09:22, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

The bot runs every other night and finds all orphaned non-free images. For hat reason, there is no real need to have a page to do that. However, you can see a list of images you have uploaded here. Good luck! Tim1357 (talk) 02:10, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
Well, I want to scan categories that your bot does not scan, but I hate to bug people to run checks for me. That is why I want to learn how to do it myself. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 04:43, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Apparently they didn't consider removing the image before removing the article. Just go ahead and delete it. CycloneGU (talk) 04:14, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Random question

Your edit-filter tracking bot: How does it work, and is it open source? Image is in use, not showing up under "File links"

Images File:Bell Atlantic logo (1984).svg and File:BellAtlantic97.png are no orphaned, have been in use at Verizon Communications since 19 April 2010 when Cluebot fixed some vandalism. The usage of these images is not showing up under their “File links”, which is why your bot probably tagged them for deletion.--Svgalbertian (talk) 13:15, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

Working well but...

I'm not sure if it's doing every project that's listed? I find it hard to believe that some of the big lists with 1000s of pages aren't being updated everyday - maybe they just aren't being referenced (I know that it just skips the page if there have been no changes). I've referenced a few today from some of the lists that haven't moved, so it will be interesting to see if they get updated tomorrow. Is there an order to the Bot? It would be good if it could run in the same order as they are listed on the submission page so that we could see if it gets stuck or just skips over some. Cheers, The-Pope (talk) 16:14, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

I've yet to find an error. Can you give an example of a list you think has changed. Then one from the list can be referenced and the template removed and you'll see the following day if it has been done. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 16:19, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
OK, some examples:
I wonder if you should try to record a log file, which records both the changed files (maybe copy the edit summary you've been using) but also records if no articles have changed, or if no articles were found. Hopefully it's an easy fix for you.The-Pope (talk) 11:47, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
Australian motorsport, Australian television and Canadian music have the same problem, they don't have a template for there project but use an option i.e {{WikiProject Canada|music=yes}} within the country template. Otherwise it could be templates are working but categories are not. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 01:16, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
The-Pope, there are some problems still unresolved for sure. I've created Category:*New_York_Yankees* to see if this is an issue of populating categories. Only one issue among many perhaps. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 13:30, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
The issue is that some work - some don't. One wildcard cat are being updated - the Dodgers one. Some standard category based ones (option in another template rather than a dedicated template) also work. The following lists were all updated in the last few days from the category list, not the template list.
I think you should delete that new category - it isn't the problem, there is something wrong with how the bot reads the lists.The-Pope (talk) 14:27, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
I've deleted the category. Let's see what Tim says. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 18:06, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Be careful with the MNH Lepidoptera genus database

Just to let you know, you apparently had a bot create a lot of Lepidoptera genus articles which seem to be based on the Museum of Natural History database. This database contains all genera of Lepidoptera that were ever validly established - but this means that most genera listed there are junior synonyms nowadays.

This database is not useful to auto-create articles for Wikipedia. I am presently stuck just with the cleanup work, and the amount of it is staggering. (Still, the valid genera at least now have articles. But it will be a long time til we manage to sort it all out.) All the best, Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 17:54, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

DASHbot

Hi, I uploaded one non-free logo to wikipedia, which was to be used in creating one article Firstsource, but by mistake one User:RadioFan marked article for speedy deletion as i created the page, i thought on creating it on same side, by placing template underconstruction, After my communication with him, he moved page to User:Abutorsam007/Firstsource, as soon as article is completed with proper references & cites. I shall be moving it to main article. Now matter is that your BOT DASHbot removed the logo from the User:Abutorsam007/Firstsource here http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=User:Abutorsam007/Firstsource&oldid=357513799, i do understand it is right, so what i need to do next?, when article is completed, then should i place again the logo, or still can i use it in User:Abutorsam007/Firstsource.(  Abu Torsam  04:50, 22 April 2010 (UTC))

DASHBot Wikiprojects

G'day Tim, Have you been able to find out why some of the category based projects are not being updated? See my comments above for the trials I've done. Cheers, The-Pope (talk) 16:14, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello, Tim1357! You've listed yourself as an active member of WikiProject Macintosh, which is currently seeing very little activity. We are trying to revive the project and your help would be appreciated. To see who is active and who is not, we will be listing all active members under "status pending" in the project's participant list. Please move your name to either the "former members" section or "active" section. Hope to see you in the "active" column! For more information on how to help the project, visit the How to help section at our project page! · EdwardsBot (talk) 02:36, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Oops!

Just thanking old Dashbot for removing non-free from user page. I meant to do it myself after getting the formatting right but then forgot all about the rule... :-(. Very good bot! Give him a pat on the head from me... :-) --Haruth (talk) 04:30, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Heh, you're welcome and will do. Tim1357 talk 04:31, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Improvement for DASHBot NFCC image removal task

Hi Tim. As a result of an editor shutting down DASHBot, I came across User:Shaakunthala/Asia-Pacific Telecentre Network. Three days in a row, about the same time every day, DASHBot removed a non-free media file from the developmental article (most recent example) doing so with its normal editor summary. Everything seems fine. Three times, the editor restored the image, and after the third time he shut DASHBot down. The bot acted correctly, and I turned it back on. I also removed the image again from the development article, and posted a message to the user's talk page. Dashbot also orphaned the image, and I retagged it as orphaned. So, everything seems fine. Except...

Dashbot never informed the 'owner' (defined as the editor in who's userspace the development article exists) of the development article about what it was doing and why. This flummoxed me. Dashbot always informs (removal, notification. So what happened? I thought perhaps it didn't inform on subpages. So, I went digging further.

Dashbot does inform 'owners' of subpages sub page removal, notification. What the...?

Then I found it... Dashbot doesn't inform owners of subpages if the owner of the subpage does not have a talk page. That was the case in this case that drew my attention, it was the case User:HappyPalooza/Marvel Cinematic Universe (still no owner talk page). I haven't found other examples as yet, but I believe I've uncovered a failing of Dashbot.

Would it be possible to improve Dashbot so that it can post notices to talk pages of users who do not have active talk pages? --Hammersoft (talk) 16:00, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Re: Heh

!! Busted! I have to say, I get to clicking through with Huggle and I have to learn to slow down. Had I noticed your edit summary, I'd have left it be. My bad. Sorry!  :) Wikipelli Talk 18:25, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

I probably would have even if I saw the edit summary. Sneaky vandals! Tim1357 talk 18:26, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Filter 39

Hello Tim1357. I can't figure the false positive on filter 39, but I'm guessing it was your changes that did it. I notice the filter will now also pick up words like 'rapper' and 'closer'. Be great if you could take a look, and perhaps roll back some of the changes. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:07, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

It wasn't me, the problem was that syllabuses has the word abuse in it. All fixed. Tim1357 talk 22:18, 27 April 2010 (UTC)
OK thanks. I've hopefully fixed those other things. I think it's generally a good idea to know when the removed lines also contain the bad words and libel, don't you? These are often articles with existing vandalism, and not widely watched. Any addition including these words is usually problematic, even when they were already there. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:32, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Move-to-commons assistant

Hi. I see that you're tagging a lot of images for speedy deletion F1. Good work but... could be even better. :-) Many of these images are public-domain and would be better off at Commons. You can use the move-to-Commons assistant. I also suspect that at least some of these images already exist on Commons so all of their copies on en.wiki should be removed. Cheers, 74.59.148.107 (talk) 17:21, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, heh. I have used that before. Right now, however, there are 13 thousand images to be deleted because they are {{NowCommons}}; I don't think I want to make that backlog any bigger for the moment. Tim1357 talk 02:45, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Specific examples - uBLPs lists not being updated

Tim, Going down the list at User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects:

See also the lists above where I referred to specific articles that I referenced a week ago, but were only removed from some of the lists. It appears (to someone who knows nothing about python or bots) that the bot has is not reading the "full list" or is being tripped up by one of the category related tasks. It's really becoming an issue - I want to start notifying some of these sub-projects that they aren't performing well, but without up to date information, it is hard to do. Thanks for all your help to date but this is getting frustrating. The-Pope (talk) 17:24, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Done. I have no idea what I did that fixed it, and frankly I don't want to. Tim1357 talk 02:42, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Better, but...

Tim, thanks for getting one more cat done, but the (at least) the following are still not being updated.

I don't know what you can do to stop this chipping away at the problem and just force all listed articles to be updated, but I feel we're getting closer! Cheers, The-Pope (talk) 13:49, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

It might be that I havent ran the bot since I saw that Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Science and academia/Unreferenced BLPs worked, I figured when the bot runs tonight It could do all those. Ill force it to start right now and make sure all those pages work. Sit tight. Tim1357 talk 16:15, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
Ugh, I found the error. I don't wan't to tell you what it is because it's so embarrassing and miniscule. Anyways, I'll babysit the bot until it's finished. Thanks for being so patient! Tim1357 talk 16:33, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
All done, those pages seem to be updating now. Tell me if there is anything else I can do! Tim1357 talk 16:55, 28 April 2010 (UTC)
Excellent Tim and The-Pope. This error has been bugging me for a while. If this is now working then I think the next stage is to extend the lists to include other active WikiProjects. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 17:14, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

It's been bugging me for a while too, and I feel pretty stupid that the bug was so (ssoooooo) minor. Tim1357 talk 17:15, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

Don't care why, glad you found the minibug. I'll have one more request for you soon.... just need to do some more investigation to see how big an issue it is. Thanks again, The-Pope (talk) 12:23, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

user-space drafts

Hiya Tim -- Why would fair use images not be appropriate for user-space drafts? Those drafts certainly qualify for the basic fair use criteria. We do need a better quarantine system for media that hasn't been confirmed to be under an appropriate license, or that is only around for fair use... but until a technical solution exists, I wonder why you are worrying about this particular corner case. SJ+ 22:17, 28 April 2010 (UTC)

  • SJ, you might be interested in this conversation. I attempted to get an exemption added to the policy for development articles to have some leeway, and it was not accepted. I agree with you; I think development articles should get some leeway, but the community does not agree. --Hammersoft (talk) 16:03, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
Yes, can't say I'm a huge fan of the policy. In the end, however, it isn't up to us. Cheers. Tim1357 talk 03:41, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Abusefilter

Do not reuse low unused filter numbers. It makes the log confusing. Prodego talk 22:29, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Terribly sorry. I thought that because the filter was deleted (and had no future of being needed again) that I could reuse the filter. Anything I can do to fix it? Tim1357 talk 03:40, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

AbuseFilter improvement

Hey Tim. I noticed the work you did with filter 260; great job getting the time down. I'm sure you know it used to be horrendous. I was wondering if you could do the same with filter 58, which is at 7ms now, and is in a form identical to the original filter 260. Thanks. Someguy1221 (talk) 22:54, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Done. Tim1357 talk 03:38, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Hi Tim. Just an FYI, I had to revert this change because it was denying a lot of legitimate edits. I'm not quite sure what was wrong; perhaps you can take a look at it again or we can go over it later together. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 14:57, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Dashbots

Hi Tim. I'm trying to test a fix I made to CRC I made today that should fix the crashing issues for Macs, but DashBots 1 and 2 went MIA recently. Do you think you could pull them back up when you get a chance? Thanks! --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 23:02, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

BLP Bot

Hi Tim, remember the DashBot run you did in January to the authors of unreferenced BLPs? I was wondering if DASHBot could be induced to do a follow up. I suspect that some of the authors have subsequently had their usertalkpages go blue, and as I remember it DASHBot was not writing to people with redlinked talkpages, also a lot of new editors and articles are likely to be in that group both because of the thousands of recently tagged unreferenced BLPs, and because some editors are changing unreferenced tags to unreferencedBLP ones whilst leaving the date unaltered. But the main reason for a reminder is that some of the authors who did get a note in January are probably ready for a reminder now , perhaps including the phrase "If you no longer think it will be possible to find sources for any of the articles that you created, you might consider tagging them for deletion with the tag {{db-author}} at the top of the article." ϢereSpielChequers 16:18, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

If I do that, I'm redirecting all the hate messages I get to WT:UBLP. Perhaps you can start a discussion there and get some sort of consensus to go again? Ill make a list right now of users who were not notified, and update you later on how many there are. Tim1357 talk 19:30, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks that's brilliant. I've started the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons#Another Dashbot run to the authors?. By the way I'm thinking of messages for both groups, a followup to people who got the last message and still have UBLPs, and a message to people who now have UBLPs and didn't get the first message. ϢereSpielChequers 11:02, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Hi Tim, we've got a draft wording at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Unreferenced_Biographies_of_Living_Persons#Wording and yes it includes a talkpage to take responses. So I think we are green to go, unless we need to run this though Bot approval, or can you arrange that? ϢereSpielChequers 09:36, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Bot Disarming

I disarmed the bot for removing an image on my User page that was fanmade. This was the second time the bot did that.--It's my Junior year in High School! (talk) 20:39, 28 April 2010 (UTC)Chris

The image (File:SLAPSTICK.jpg) is tagged as a fair-use image, and is therefore (on wikipedia) restricted to the Non-free content criteria. If I may quote that page:

9. Restrictions on location: Non-free content is allowed only in articles (not disambiguation pages), and only in article namespace...

I am sorry, but unfortunatly you cannot have that image on your user page. (You can, however have a link to it.) Please ask any other questions you may have.
Sincerely Tim1357 talk 01:06, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

The articles on Gerry Desjardins and Marty Pavelich are legitimate articles. www.hockeydb.com was their source.

And I have another complaint. Game two of the 1925 Stanley Cup finals was played at Denman Arena in Vancouver---yet the Stanley Cup final article says all games were played at Patrick Arena in Victoria. Could you please change the location for game two to Denman Arena? My source is The Trail of the Stanley Cup Vol. I by Charles L. Coleman (The reason they played at Denman Arena for game two was that Denman Arena had a seating capacity of 10,500 and it helped pay the increasing Stanley Cup salaries to players. Patrick Arena only seated 4,000.) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Corey Bryant (talkcontribs) 19:05, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Tim1357!
DASHBot has given me a notification that File:Kolkata Meetup Map 9 July 2011.png is orphaned. However, the file is being used on a Wikipedia:MEETUP page (Wikipedia:Meetup/Kolkata/Kolkata6).

Dashbot is having a good run tonight, I see...

Noticed that Dashbot is running tonight, and having quite a run tagging all the orphaned non-free files. One thing that it did, however, is it double-tagged File:RachelJ.jpg (diff). I've already fixed the double-tagging, but I thought I'd let you know, just in case this is something where the bot isn't (yet) programmed to check for existing tags before tagging, or if it is and it's malfunctioning.
