Questions
Hello, I'm relatively new to Wikipedia. I just edited the Hawaiian monk seal page and thought the new information (that the seal was officially designated Hawaii's state mammal last week) might warrant it a spot on Wikipedia's home page in the news section. How do I submit it? Also, why did you choose to change your username? Is there a liability in using your real name (as I have)?
Thanks!Shannon.wianecki (talk) 18:43, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Re: The Hawaiian Wikiproject Newsletter
I'm putting some interview questions together now. I'll post them on the news bureau page for you in a few days and notify you here. :) Viriditas (talk) 18:03, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
- Not done yet, but I'll be placing the questions here in the next 24 hours. Thanks! Viriditas (talk) 04:17, 24 June 2008 (UTC)
- It took a little longer than I hoped, but I've placed the first question for you in the above link. Feel free to be as brief or as long as you like in your reply. The next question will be in reply to your response. Thanks! Viriditas (talk) 11:26, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
- Since the newsletter is going to be published in less than 12 hours, I've moved the interview to the August issue. Viriditas (talk) 12:35, 30 June 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for the response. I suppose we could do part 1 and 2? :-) FYI...we're going to publish a little late today, as MPerel won't be able to distribute the newsletter until later tonight. Plus, I haven't finished it... :) Viriditas (talk) 22:16, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Karen_Carpenter_-_1980.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.
As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 22:55, 6 July 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nv8200p talk 22:55, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Orphaned non-free media (Image:Ebony and Ivory.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:Ebony and Ivory.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 19:27, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Rcpacc.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Rcpacc.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check
- That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
- That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Category:Disputed fair use rationale images, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Category:Disputed fair use rationale images is used solely by a template that has been deleted (CSD C3).
To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Category:Disputed fair use rationale images, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. - Did the DYK you added[1] previously appear on the main page? All of the DYK's on the Portal talk page have appeared on the main page, which is what I'm trying to replace the old ones with here. In other words, only DYK's that have actually appeared on the main page should appear on the Portal. Viriditas (talk) 23:39, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm going to be offline for a bit, but feel free to leave me messages. :) I think your idea for writing about the garbage patch around Hawaiian waters is a good one, but we need to create the appropriate topics first. You could even cobble together a stub from the information on already existing pages. We've got images, so that isn't a problem. So what we are really talking about is creating a new article. Let me know what you want to call it. Viriditas (talk) 23:41, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

If you did not create this media file, please understand that the vast majority of images found on the internet are not appropriate for Wikipedia. Most content on the internet is copyrighted and the creator of the image has exclusive rights to use it. Wikipedia respects the copyrights of others - do not upload images that violate others' copyrights. In certain limited cases, we may be able to use an image under a claim of fair use - if you are certain that fair use would apply here, you may choose one of the fair use tags from this list. If no fair use rationale applies, you may want to contact the copyright holder and request that they make the media available under a free license.
If you have any questions please ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you. -Nard 01:48, 17 October 2008 (UTC)- The actual license is cc-by-nc-sa, which due to the nc restriction is not free enough for Wikipedia, not the cc-by-sa you uploaded it as. -Nard 01:48, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

- I appreciate you nominating Hokulea for GAN, but if Newportm doesn't have the time to work on it (he's been busy) it will probably fail if nobody lends a hand. I've added a checklist here. You are of course, welcome to help bring it to GA status, and I hope that you do now that you have nominated it, but it isn't quite ready yet. If I was the reviewer, I would fail it automatically based on the criteria I've detailed on the temp page link above. Viriditas (talk) 00:27, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

DYK for Soon We'll Be Found
Done. I left some comments at T:TDYK for you. I really want this hook to get to the main page, it's a topic that I personally find fascinating; there's just a little more work we need to do on the article before I can check it off. —Politizer talk/contribs 07:30, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
- I just notice another thing you'll need to do...the section on Music and Lyrics will probably be criticized as original research by most reviewers, as you're using the lyrics to try to extrapolate themes. You'll have to find some outside source (such as a review or something) that mentions those themes on its own, and then cite it...we're not allowed to figure out themes on our own.
- The other issue is the number of self-published references. For example, ref 7 (for the iTunes thing), as well as refs 1 and 4, are from Sia's website; you'll have to add more references from third-party sources that aren't affiliated with her.
- I also left some comments at the article talk page about the Reception section. —Politizer talk/contribs 07:57, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
- I just noticed, none of the refs currently in the article (at least the ones I looked at last time) say that the language used in the video is ASL. In fact, given that the singer is Australian, wouldn't it be reasonable to expect that the language used is Auslan or BSL? —Politizer talk/contribs 08:26, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
- The official site says that? I didn't see it in there (the page I was looking at is this). Can you show me which page you found it in? It's fine to use her official site to verify the ASL thing; I just want to make sure it's really in there. —Politizer talk/contribs 08:43, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I noticed that Yahoo thread when I was looking for reviews...but unfortunately, we can't use it as a source. (Although at least it lets us know what we're looking for.) —Politizer talk/contribs 08:44, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
- I'd say give the BBC video link as the main source, and then as a secondary source (since non-UK people can't watch the BBC video) give http://siamusic.net/news/640 , and in the ref include the quote "...Sia discusses her passion for the beauty of sign language, how she took inspiration from watching uk tv for the soon we'll be found video and her reasoning behind choosing american sign language." —Politizer talk/contribs 08:47, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
- I don't know anything about the charts, but Some People Have Real Problems#Sales and chart performance has a ref and a table. —Politizer talk/contribs 01:15, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
- I verified it, so unless someone else challenges it then it will go to the main page eventually. It will probably take another 2 or 3 days, as we do the oldest nominations first. The best thing to do is just keep an eye on the page, checking back once every 24 hours or so just in case any other reviewers leave comments. In any case, no one will revoke the nomination without giving you a chance to respond first; when someone does challenge a nomination, they generally leave it up for at least 48 hours (and usually much longer than that) to give the nominator time to respond, and only remove the nomination if it is sitting around for longer than that with no one responding to it. But if you don't hear anything or see any new messages on the nomination, that means eventually it will go into the queue to get to the main page. I don't know when that will happen because, as the person who verified it, I can't also be the person who puts it into the queue. —Politizer talk/contribs 07:39, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
A Humble Thanks
I humbly thank you for the barnstar, I am very, very appreciative. As for the article, I hope to continue copyediting Mediocre (album) through every section, as per your request to the Guild of Copy Editors because, for some unfathomable reason, I enjoy copyediting. How far do you think Mediocre (album) is from A class or even from a Good Article nomination? Scapler (talk) 20:55, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
- I would love to help bring it to GA if you think there is anything else I can do to improve it. Scapler (talk) 22:29, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
- I can certainly do that, I will get to it a little later, however, I am currently writing a report on Cormac McCarthy's novel The Road (highly recommend it by the way, an excellent book) Scapler (talk) 22:46, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Do you have any idea where additional pictures could be found? I looked through the website for the album, because reading things in Spanish is almost as fun as copyediting, but I did not find any images actually relevant to the album itself, no production videos or anything... - Another issue is the use of uncollapsed "Assessment Comments" as default. Default should always be collapsed. Viriditas (talk) 09:48, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
- For an example of the nesting problem, see the tags on Talk:Huna. The project template should have the same width, size, and font as all the other project templates. Viriditas (talk) 09:51, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
- Another issue is the use of uncollapsed "Assessment Comments" as default. Default should always be collapsed. Viriditas (talk) 09:48, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Ack! Now all the templates on all the talk pages are screwy unless one does a null edit to reset the template. This is a good example of why we should use the testcase page before making a change to the main article. Don't worry, we'll figure this out. Viriditas (talk)
- Hi. For now, it would be best if you just use Template:WPHawaii/sandbox for testing any new template design, Template:WPHawaii/testcases for viewing the changes, and Template:WikiProjectBannerShell/sandbox for viewing banner shell test cases (you need to change the code on that page). We want to avoid making interface changes to the live template unless we test it first. Right now, there are still problems. As a result, I've reverted back. Let's try and work the bugs out in the sandbox/testcases/BannerShell area first. Thanks. Viriditas (talk) 07:55, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
- I've just added your most recent changes to Template:WPHawaii/sandbox. Viriditas (talk) 07:58, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
{{Infobox Anthem}} edits
Hi,
Can you shed some light on your recent changes to {{Infobox Anthem}}? You reverted the template from using the {{infobox}} base class to using raw HTML, including a large amount of superfluous styling. This made the template significantly more difficult to comprehend and maintain, so I've reverted it. Was there a particular change to the appearance or logic you hoped to effect? Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 10:17, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
- On a related note, there's some redundant text from {{Infobox font}} on articles using it. -- Mentisock 15:43, 25 November 2008 (UTC)
Hi, I don't know if you realized it, but I think some of your recent edits to Template:Infobox mineral messed up some formatting; pictures now appear far too large. See, for example, Pyrite and Amethyst. I don't know enough about template syntax to find what you did, but could you please go back and change it? Thanks, FlamingSilmaril (talk) 22:08, 26 November 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for notifying me about that. I have fixed it. If you see any pages that contain huge images, please simply edit it and save it without making changes. It will fix the problem. After that, you may want to press Ctrl + F5 (on Firefox and IE) to clear your cache. Again, thank you! – Obento Musubi (C • G • S) 00:30, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Just reset to older version as image size problems remained - noted on diamond. Vsmith (talk) 01:16, 27 November 2008 (UTC) After re-reading the above note, I have no clue why you would expect any random user to do that - or why it would work. Please explain and fix any source problems before re-instating your changes as we are here to write an encyclopedia - not experiment with obscure code. Vsmith (talk) 01:22, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Fine, whatever. I personally don't care if you reverted it because I know it worked. I was being bold because I wasn't satisfied with how it looked. If you don't like it or you don't like what I'm saying, then tell me straight up. I can sense from all of your comments (as well as those from the Spanish Wikipedia) that my edits aren't up to par in your opinion. And that's fine. But this is a free encyclopedia. So far, all I've experienced is continuous reverts because my edits caused some problem. And when it got fixed, it got reverted anyway, and people claimed it still didn't work. But, as far as I'm concerned, it worked perfectly. I thought this case would be different. I edited the template, and after I saw nobody reverted it, I assumed that people liked it and thought it looked nice. But now even this template is being reverted. It frustrates me, and it pains me that, when I try to help, people point out the flaws, and instead of fixing it, simply revert it. Good luck, because I will not stop contributing to templates. I am going to keep making templates and keep modifying them. Keep reverting them. Sorry for this long rant. I'm frustrated right now. Happy editing, – Obento Musubi (C • G • S) 05:15, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- I am looking at the versions of pyrite and amethyst (which experienced image problems as mentioned above) with my template, and it still works just fine. The pages have not been updated, and still contain my edits after I fixed the image size. It works fine. So I don't know what you're talking about when you said Diamond was experiencing problems, because it looked perfectly fine to me (I saw diamond before it updated to the new, or really old, template). Please indicate to me exactly what was malfunctioning, and exactly why you reverted my edits. I believe it to be unfair and, frankly, uncalled for. – Obento Musubi (C • G • S) 05:19, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

I liked your template so much, I think I will send it back to you! So, have you spread the Thanksgiving wikilove to anyone else? (I think I should make a template to give to my wikifriends for every holiday, this one was great fun!) Scapler (talk) 01:37, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Changes to Infobox U.S. state
Hi - Can you please comment on the thread about the changes at Template talk:Infobox U.S. state? -- Rick Block (talk) 00:42, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.
It's good to get many different perspectives on a topic, including how people view infoboxes. Take a look at this discussion as one example. My guess is that you will be more successful with infobox design if you can try to streamline it as much as possible. Good luck. Viriditas (talk) 11:34, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
Speedy deletion of Ben Smith's Blog
A tag has been placed on Ben Smith's Blog requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for web content.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. New Userpage
A new userpage, I see. It looks very sleek, what made you decide to change it? Scapler (talk) 21:42, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Nope, not rounded, I'm afraid I'm using Safari. Update: Just looked at it in Firefox, the rounded view is even better! Scapler (talk) 21:55, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I do not see the roundness in Safari, but this is not a big deal really. Scapler (talk) 23:39, 30 November 2008 (UTC)

GA Review
Though I no editor is prohibited from doing a GA review, I have worked on the article. WP:Reviewing good articles states: "Reviewers should avoid reviewing articles that they have edited significantly", however, I only copyedited it, and I suppose I did not contribute any content to the article, so I am not sure if my contributions should be considered significant. What are your thoughts? Scapler (talk) 22:30, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- Alright, I will put on my reviewing cap and go for it! Scapler (talk) 23:08, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- I am currently reviewing the article. Scapler (talk) 23:39, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
I have finished the review, as you can see there, I found only one problem that I am uncomfortable with. If you can fix this issue, I would have no regrets with passing the article to GA status. Scapler (talk) 23:57, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- In that case, I will certainly pass the article, thank you for removing OR I did not catch, I wasn't aware that you had translated them yourself. Scapler (talk) 00:08, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
No problem, the article is certainly coming together. Scapler (talk) 00:44, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
Corner Rounding
Unfortunately, it appears that rounded box edge code cannot be written for viewing in both Firefox and Safari. I was able to write the code so that they appear rounded in Safari here, but when I viewed it in Firefox, then that browser did not display the rounding. Sigh, it is a depressing and impossible cause. Scapler (talk) 01:06, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

- What do you think of the template below as a means of asking it?
Obviously, your opinion is valuable to me, so I will await your reply. Scapler (talk) 02:08, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thank you for your opinion, I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't a completely stupid idea. Scapler (talk) 02:33, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Big chemistry test, huh? I don't have incredibly fond memories of chemistry class, my teacher talked to palmetto bugs and changed her accent about every other minute. She also spoke Spanish like a complete gringo (then again, I am a gringo, but at least I don't speak español like one). I have really never gotten a good science teacher since eighth grade...so sad. - Yeah, I suppose so. I have always heard that the admin process was brutal and jarring (as well as seen the fact in RfAs), guess I just wanted the opinion of someone who has gone through it. I do not know if I could self-nominate anyway, it would make me feel odd. Scapler (talk) 04:48, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use Image:Karen Carpenter.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Karen Carpenter.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the media description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? NrDg 21:54, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

La Wikipedia en español
Hey, I have an account over at the Spanish Wikipedia, but have used it mainly for translating articles to English. I recently transferred over an article when someone posted it here (in Spanish). So, I put the article on the correct project. Unfortunately, I believe I named it incorrectly, and since I am not autoconfirmed (less than fifty edits) there, I cannot move the article to a new name. So, as a favor, could you go to the Colibrí de Scintillant article and rename it Colibrí Scintillant? You have my profuse thanks! Scapler (talk) 21:24, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

- Cool. Basically, my main concern is that the WP:HAWAII main page has some duplication and appears mostly on the left side, unlike a balanced layout that you see over at Wikipedia:WikiProject Olympics, for example. Also, the current members box on the right duplicates the one on the left, and the one on the right doesn't let you join, so it should be removed. I guess it would be nice to take the left column and balance it out on the right, because in Firefox, it appears as a huge column on the left with a giant blank space on the right. Image copyright problem with File:No Vuelvo Más.ogg
Thanks for uploading File:No Vuelvo Más.ogg.

Merge?
Don't you think it makes sense to merge House Bill 444 into Recognition of same-sex unions in Hawaii? The Bill article has some good other sources, but the content is pretty much the same. Best wishes Hekerui (talk) 21:48, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
- If I may jump in here, I don't think there is any hurry to merge if the original author (OM) is interested in spending some time expanding the HB444 article. However, if OM isn't interested in expanding the article past the stub stage, then it could be merged into the parent article, however both articles need significant expansion so it could go either way.
