Category:Undated AfC submissions warning from EarwigBot I, Task 2
The Earwig, Category:Undated AfC submissions is not empty, and contains submissions! In order to clean it up, per the task I was approved for, I strongly consider running EarwigBot I, Task 4 using this local command: file:///Users/ben/Desktop/Benjamin/Wikipedia/Bots/EarwigBot_I/Task_4/Launch.app. Thanks, EarwigBot I (Owner | Talk) 22:52, 14 June 2009 (UTC)
- Done. It wasn't a submission needing attention, but rather a user that did not know how to close submissions properly. The Earwig (Talk | Editor review) 01:10, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Outline collaboration #2: Outline of Gibraltar
This outline is approaching completion.
I added a bunch more links, finding them with the following Google site-specific searches of Wikipedia:
(You can use the wikicode for the links above as the basis for new searches - just replace "Gibraltar" with any other country or region name).
Request: please redirect the redlinks! (bluelinking...)
The redlinks need to be bluelinked where possible. The most useful way is to create redirects leading to the material (which is usually included in a section of an article - see Wikipedia:Redirect#Redirects to page sections. That way, when the redirect pages are replaced by the actual articles, the links will already point to the right places.
Please take a crack at it, and bluelink a few.
Thank you.
Good luck.
Have fun.

Categorized submissions
Hey, I'm sure you noticed that many users pre-emptively categorize their submissions, or give them stub or other templates that auto-categorize the page. Jitse's bot used to remove the cats and neuter the templates that caused them under the old AFC system. I was wondering if you could set one of your bots (or create a new one) to do the same thing to declined submissions? I noticed you've been running a few AFC bots, so I assumed the request wouldn't bother you. Thanks. Someguy1221 (talk) 05:23, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
- This should be a pretty simple bot, and I'd be happy to do it. I'll get back to you when I have time. Regards, The Earwig (Talk | Editor review) 10:50, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, would be very helpful. An extra colon neutralises the categories and interwikis, and a {{tl}} to kill any templates. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:51, 17 June 2009 (UTC)
I'll begin working on this as soon as EarwigBot III is online. However, before starting this, I'd like to know if I should combine this with the potential bot task I suggested at WP:AN#Category:Declined AfC submissions needs clearing. There does not yet appear to be any consensus on whether to nuke the submissions as Nakon (talk · contribs) suggested, keep them all, or keep them for a certain time period, as I suggested. If we reach a decision to operate a bot to delete old (really old) submissions, then both tasks could be combined into the AfC Declined EarwigBot, in theory. But if we obtain consensus to keep the old submissions, then I might as well just run this as a task of EarwigBot I. The Earwig (Talk | Editor review) 00:57, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
- I think we need to discuss that on the project page. But anyway I don't think they would combine because the category and template-nuking can be done within a day of being declined. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:41, 18 June 2009 (UTC)
Hey, it would be fantastic if we could date all the accepted submissions as well. A small change to your task 2 program should achieve that I think. What do you think? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 18:43, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

RE: Multilinear Transformation rejected
Jenme (talk) 22:20, 25 June 2009
I there, I created the Multilinear Transformation article that you rejected. You suggested merging or adding to "Multilinear Map" which is a altogether different concept. It is a way to describe a tensor analagous to describing a covector as a linear functional (basically in english: describing a geometric object as a function).
So i hope you would be kind enough to start this article due to its foundational role in tensor algebra. Also it goes hand in hand with another article for creation: "Multiarray"
Cheers,
Jennifer
- Hi, Jennifer. Due to the volume of articles that I look at, I'm not quite sure which specific page you are referring to. Would it be possible to point me to the location of the article on Wikipedia? I did a search for Multilinear Transformation, and also looked through your contributions, but I could not find anything. If possible, please tell me what the title of the article was (that is, what it says exactly on the top of the page). If this is not possible, I will continue to look. However, if I am unable to find the article, I will probably be unable to restore it. I know that this question sounds stupid, but I really am unsure of what you are talking about. Sorry for the trouble, The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 02:49, 26 June 2009 (UTC)
Hi there, the article URLs are http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Multilinear_transformation and http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Multiarray
Thanks
Jenme
- I have looked over the pages you mentioned, and here is my interpretation of the results. It seems to me that the reasons Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Multilinear transformation was declined are sound. I notice how you compare a multilinear transformation to a linear transformation. This leads me to wonder why, when a linear transformation and a linear map are the same thing, a multilinear transformation and a multilinear map are not. I am no expert on the subject, but I would still advise you to combine your existing knowledge about a multilinear transformation into the multilinear map article. Upon further investigation, I am almost certain that a multilinear transformation and a multilinear map are the same thing, due to their astounding similarities (e.g., n-linear map and n-linear transformation). I fear that the definition you provided on the multilinear transformation page does not belong in its own article, but both articles can instead be merged together. I'm really sorry, I am hardly an expert on this subject, so it is hard to judge the article's suitability, but this is the only thing that I can suggest you do. As for Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Multiarray, I have put that on hold pending a solution to the problems raised at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/k-array. Both submissions are extremely similar, and I would like to see the problem involving whether the submission is a neologism addressed. Feel free to improve the submission to address how it is not a neologism, and then it can probably be accepted. I have done the best I can, but due to my lack of expertise in this subject, I would advise you to consult WT:WikiProject Mathematics for more help, as they are more likely to know about the subject at hand. Clarification regarding disturbance of an article.
Dear Sir
On 29 June 2009 at about 8:30 p.m.(I.S.T) I received a message from you stating that someone from my I.P. address had disturbed an article(Template:Banking in India).I write this message to assure you I am a responsible netizen and a frequent user of wikipedia and have not done this unhelpful act.As advised by you I have created an account on wikipedia.I would be greatful if you could throw some light on why this happened,is my computer hacked?Though I am not very qualified so as edit a great site like wikipedia but I'll be really happy if you could enlighten me about the features of wikipedia. Meghashish Sharma 17:17, 29 June 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Meghashish (talk • contribs)
- Hi, Meghashish, and Welcome to Wikipedia! (You may find that link helpful if you have not browsed there already.) The problem you are telling me about is relatively common, and I have certainly seen it before. No, your computer has not been hacked, so there is no need to worry about your internet security. The reason this happened is rather complex, but I'll try to explain it as best as I can. When you don't have an account, your contributions are linked to your IP address (click on that link to read more). An IP address is basically the internet equivalent of your real address (even though they don't actually have to be connected), and the same IP address may belong to different users at different periods of time. Sometimes, a user (without an account) will vandalize Wikipedia, and they will receive a warning similar to the one you got. However, if that user's IP address is used by multiple people (as I mentioned above, it can happen), not only will they receive the warning, but you will as well. So there is nothing to worry about, you are not in any trouble, and now that you have an account, it will not happen again. I hope that helps!
- Finally, it is a shame to hear a Wikipedian tell me that they are not "qualified" to edit. Everyone who edits Wikipedia is a volunteer, so even if you're not an expert in the subjects you are interested in, I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay here. If you have trouble writing, you can put your skills to work somewhere else on this site, such as maintenance, or the Counter-Vandalism Unit. If you have any more questions, feel free to type {{Helpme}} on your talk page and ask your question below it, or simply ask me here. I love to help newcomers, and I'm sorry if this answer was rather long, but I couldn't help it. Thanks, and have fun! The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 17:41, 29 June 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject banner
I appreciate your work in adding articles to the presidential elections project. You should take note of a formatting issue, though. When you add the WikiProject banner and it falls immediately before the first heading on the talk page, you must insert a line break. Otherwise the heading doesn't display properly. See this edit for an example of the cleanup needed. JamesMLane t c 07:40, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

about an article i submitted
hey, i was in the process of trying to create an Wikipedia article for my artist name "DJ Petrah" and it says im running into copyright issues? How could i be if the information is mine, or what i initially wrote on my artist profile? Just a question. Let me know whats going on please. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Darksideoftheboom813 (talk • contribs) 15:08, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- Well, I guess my bot is a little picky. It noticed the line "Petrah has made it a point to stay an Underground Artist, as he feels many Music Artists today are out of touch with what creating music is really about" in your article submission, and saw that the line was also in your MySpace profile. Whenever you post content to MySpace, it automatically becomes copyrighted, so if someone were to take that exact sentence and put it on Wikipedia, they would be violating copyright laws. However, because the copied sentence is so small, and also because you wrote it, there is no copyright violation involved. I've removed the warning, and everything should be fine now. Regards, The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 15:20, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
George Mandler
This is not a copyright violation - you cannot copyright names, titles, positions etc - and that was all that was listed in the presumed vioilation. There just is no major variation possible in listing such things., Thanks for listening. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 137.110.22.20 (talk) 09:21, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, you're correct. Sorry about that mistake, but my bot occasionally makes errors like that. I've removed the warning. The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 14:42, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
Things
Sorry to disturb your dramaout. I notice you have been creating lots of articles about your favorite animal. Thanks for running the bot through Category:Undated AfC submissions. I notice there are a few left - what's the story with them? You may have noticed that I created a template (Template:AfC date category) to put the pages in the correct category - monthly before September 2008 and daily afterwards. By the way I see you have been here for more than a year now; congratulations. Are you thinking about reuqesting the mop anytime soon? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:44, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- The pages remaining at Category:Undated AfC submissions are due the bot's inability to process pages with strange characters in them (å, é, á, ü, et cetera). I guess those will have to be done manually; about 3.7% of the original are still unfinished. And thanks for putting the timestamping feature to good use! It also might be fun to do something with the |reviewer= parameter, which has been filled out by the bot as well, but isn't used by {{WPAFC}}. Maybe a bunch of hidden cats, like Category:AfC submissions by reviewer/MSGJ?
- Yes, I've been thinking about adminship for a while. The things that keep me from taking the plunge are mainly related to what I see here. Only 36% of my contributions are to the mainspace (24% are to my userspace), and I've only been active, if you consider the periods when I've made a lot of edits, for about five months. Furthermore, I don't have anything impressive to say about myself in the conflict resolution department, which is an area that seems awfully important for an admin.
- But I digress. I've always had trouble evaluating myself. For example, I wrote a long statement for this because I thought that I would get a bunch of complaints about the task, and I hardly believed that this or this would pass. Maybe it would be better if I simply took a chance and went for it. I don't know; what do you think? The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 21:36, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
- 36% in mainspace is fine (I think mine was only 25%), but yeah, 24% in your own userspace is pretty high! I take your point about only editing actively for 5 months - I'd assumed you'd been fairly active for a year now. You've made quite an impact in the time that you have been here and I think you probably would be successful. However unless you're in a real hurry then I might suggest waiting a little while as it is preferable and less stressful to pass easily (or even unaminously)! I followed your suggestion and created Category:AfC submissions by reviewer/MSGJ and it seems to work well. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:43, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
- Sounds appropriate. I'll wait a month or so and then give it a shot. Thanks! The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 14:46, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Naming guidelines for Australian cities and towns
Hi, just a short note to let you know that I moved back Willow Tree to Willow Tree, New South Wales. This is in line with Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names)#Australia. I agree that this is silly but it appears that that is the way that most here want it to remain. I think there was a rationale for this convention in the deep, dark past but I suspect it survives now merely because "It's always been like that." I raised it for discussion about 18 months or so ago but it is safe to say, "there was no consensus for the change" so the status quo was retained. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 21:21, 22 July 2009 (UTC)
- I guess I just assumed that Australia's naming guidelines were the same as the rest of the world's, but it seems that a good portion of the countries have their own systems. I've seen situations like Denver and Philadelphia, so the move seemed to make sense. Thanks for clarifying. The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 21:58, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm curious about your reasoning
Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/CanItBe was created by a troll named CanItBeMe (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · nuke contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) and serves no purpose beyond general disruption and attacking me. One of the admins that was dealing with the problem speedy'd the page. You removed that tag several minutes later. I think supporting this sort of disruptive behavior shows either a rush to judgment without gathering facts or poor judgment if you did gather the facts, but it It could also be a simple mistake or reasonable based on some facts I do not know. Could you either correct your mistake or explain your reasoning? Thanks, Celestra (talk) 05:42, 23 July 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, it's a mistake on my part for not fixing the template; it seems I only removed it when I intended to replace it with another one. The reason I did this was because, even though it was created by a troll, the page is not patent nonsense, and it concerns me to see situations where pages are deleted under the wrong criteria. However, it is most definitely speediable under G3/G10, so I've re-added the template. My apologies for not doing so earlier. Thanks, The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 13:49, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

Actually, in retrospect, I'm going to decline this. Nothing personal, it's just that I'm not sure I'm really ready to give adminship a shot, and I'd prefer to wait a bit longer. (Half a year, perhaps?) If it's not too much trouble, I'm going to G7 the nomination, so that I have a clean page to work on when I do decide to run. Hopefully, the end of the year, or perhaps a little later, would be a good date to aim for. And Impala: one quick note. It's generally more courteous to wait for someone to accept their nomination before creating the page, in case they decline (like I just did). Bug report
I didn't put Rick May on hold, but the bot says I did. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:20, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
- It's the same issue that you told me about when the bot was still in development. Simply put, the bot only recognizes the first hold, and if the submission is resubmitted and held again after that, it will still use the first. I'm trying to work on a fix for it, but it's an awfully complex aspect of the bot. I think it basically needs to work in reverse, but that will involve some strange changes to the code that I'll have to think through carefully. Thanks for reminding me about this, The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 14:44, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, I see. I forgot that I had already put this one on hold actually. Thanks for clarifying. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 16:06, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Just found an error in the last task: [1]. By the way, do you think EarwigBot might be able to update Wikipedia:Articles for creation/recent automatically? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:35, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, I though I had put something in the code to prevent that. But it's not a dangerous change, just a pointless one, and if the bot ever needs to run again, I have the correction made in the code. Anyway, working on Wikipedia:Articles for creation/recent sounds like a good idea! I'll get started on that soon, and it should be fine as a task of EarwigBot III. It's at User:Penubag/Sandbox3.
But it's not done yet. Feel free to help improve it.
I'm hoping that everyone involved with the WP:WPOOK will sign it (please sign without a timestamp).
Thank you.

I created this text in the submission to Wikipedia's article QuickTime#QuickTime file format in 14 June 2009 upon text on http://www.mp4ra.org/specs.html Creation of this submission can be seen here: http://wiki.riteme.site/w/index.php?title=QuickTime&diff=296338841&oldid=296261583

- Yes, you are correct, that text is not enough to constitute a copyright violation. See, my bot is currently in the middle of a change, and it appears that your submission got checked right when I was making the modification. Because of the problem in the code, it tagged your submission as a copyright violation because there was duplicate text in it, even though the duplicated text was so minor. That is the simplest answer I can give you, and sorry for causing you so much trouble. Regards, The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 13:42, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

IRC EarwigBot died.
Hi Earwig. I know you're on vacation right now, however if you do come on, would you mind restarting EarwigBot in IRC? It seems to have been fatally wounded and died (it's not in the channel).

Earwigbot category pouluator
Hi, is it possible instead of populating a category like Category:AfC submissions by reviewer subpages, it fills in a list on a user subpage? This is because of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2009 August 18#Category:AfC submissions by reviewer (and all subcategories). Graeme Bartlett (talk) 05:37, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
- Hi. Well, simply put, it is possible, but the category system is much easier. Here we would be talking about a bot constantly updating a subpage, while the category system is auto-maintained by parser functions and templates (not by the bot adding pages to it, this was only to speed it up in the beginning). I'd rather wait until the end of this discussion to see what can be done. Thanks for telling me though. Regards, The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 13:49, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

New text for Wikipedia
Dear Earwig,
What do you think of this? How about a new font for Wikipedia instead of the Arial or Helvetica text, how about the text of Adobe Garamond Pro. or Times New Roman? If you can do this, i will be very appreciated.
- George1822 —Preceding unsigned comment added by George1822 (talk • contribs) 23:01, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
- Hi! This is less of something that can be done on Wikipedia, and more of something that can be done in your browser. Most browsers have an option in their preferences enabling you to change the default font used on web pages (Wikipedia uses the sans-serif one, not the serif one). If you can't find the option, just tell me what browser you use, I could probably figure out where you can find it. Thanks! The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 23:43, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, I wasn't the deleting admin there, I just saw that an admin had deleted what seemed to be all the pages, so I closed it as a housekeeping matter. I will tag the remaining one for speedy deletion, as I am not an admin. Gigs (talk) 15:08, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, fair enough. Because you closed the debate, I naturally assumed that you were an admin, forgetting about non-admin closures. The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 15:13, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, over at MfD we have a lot of debates that are speedy closed for whatever reason, so NACs are a little more common. I usually put "NAC" at the end to tip people off, wouldn't you know the first time I forget to do that it causes confusion, hehe. Gigs (talk) 15:29, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

ACC
Hi. Can you please help me to drop the request that you had earlier commented on? I can't access into ACC now. I've no idea what's wrong. Thanks! BejinhanTalk 14:20, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
- Two things. First of all, it would probably be better to email the user using the new "custom email" feature, telling them that they should contact unblock-en-l@lists.wikimedia.org if they still want to create an account. This might be a better idea, because we won't leave them hanging and confused as to why their request was dropped. Second of all, it seems that the Toolserver is offline at the moment, which will explain why you are unable to access ACC. By an odd coincidence, the Toolserver went offline right when you were about to close the request. The only thing we can do right now is wait for it to go back online. Thanks, The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 14:41, 24 August 2009 (UTC)

- It can be anywhere between a half a month and three months, but it really depends on the workload at WP:GAN. I don't think it should be longer than a month, but you never know how things will turn out. And honestly, if you want my input, it won't pass unless we can remove {{unreferenced}} from the "appearance and behavior" section. The rest of the article is very good, but it's that section that concerns me. Maybe I'll have a go at it soon to see what I can do. The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 23:49, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

(outdent) It's a good page, but there are still some things that are bothering me. Personally, I'd like to see the images cleaned up. They're not very organized, and I find them to be a nuisance when reading the article. I'd also appreciate it if you could remove the dead external links, and clean up the More information section, which is far from nice to look at. But beyond that, I still feel like it is "missing something." I'd like to see some more content in the article, preferably about their life cycle (see how I did it at ringlegged earwig; you might find this page useful), and their impact on humans, as seen here. Not all of these things are necessary, but it might be helpful if we want the GA to pass. The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 02:16, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

- Hi. In order for these articles/submissions to be listed, you must specify the timestamp parameter (ts=) on {{WPAFC}}, the project's banner. This parameter categorizes the talk page in one of the dated categories, Category:AfC submissions by date, instead of Category:Undated AfC submissions, which allows the bot to find them. In order to do this, use {{subst:AFC submission/banner|class=}} when creating the accepted article's talk page, instead of {{WPAFC|class=}}. This template will add the necessary parameters that are required by the bot to find the submission. (See here for an example of the change.) I'm sorry if this is hard to understand, but I'm in quite a rush, and didn't have write clearly. Thanks, The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 00:28, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Lightworker
I Am having issues submitting information to the lightworker page. I had some information removed for copyright reasons.
I now have new content but can not access the page. What can I do? --Outelligent (talk) 15:11, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
- The reason you are unable to create the page is because it has been create-protected, which means only administrators can start it. The reason this happened is because it has been frequently deleted in the past; it is a mechanism to stop users from putting the same content in a page over and over again, only to see it deleted. If you are sure that the content you have now meets our guidelines (notability, verifiability, reliable sources, etc), you can go ahead and request that the page be unprotected at the Requests for page protection/unprotection page. I hope that helps; if you need anything to be clarified, just ask! Regards, The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 19:18, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

- Yay! Thanks for this, I really love it. That was some night, heh... I was up until two in the morning making sure that all of them would be closed, and that the IP had finally finished sending them. Really, over one hundred requests to handle – it was tiring. Anyway, The Earwig (Talk | Contribs) 20:27, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

copyright
Hello, My Husband owns the copyrights and gave me the right to put the informations on wikipedia. ist that a problem? Thanks, Dona Dona aglaia (talk) 20:09, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but this is problematic. Even though your husband owns the copyright, the same content can be found on several different websites: [21][22][23][24][25]. On Wikipedia, the only way you can add content that is copyrighted or available somewhere is to release it under a free license that allows commercial use: the Creative Commons. You must also show us that you own it, usually by an author citation at the bottom of each page it appears on. Unfortunately, this will be nearly impossible due to the fact that the information is available on so many different sites, as I indicated above. If you still want to try your luck and make a copyright claim, see WP:CONSENT, but I must warn you that it would probably be much easier to write the content over again. Re: Overpopulated categories cleanup
Hi Earwig, I just wanted to follow up with you on this discussion. It looks like I got a reply from someone here and it seems she's willing to help, and now with this new category tally feature it should make it easier. Any thoughts? -- Ϫ 23:34, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
