Disambiguation

Hi. Thank you for Casolari. Is it better Delrio? Rago (talk) 07:52, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

@Rago: It looks better, but it's still missing a header. Something along the lines of "Delrio is a surname and may refer to to:" Check it out now and see the difference. -- Tavix (talk) 04:11, 17 December 2015 (UTC)
Ok, I was thinking that {{surname|Delrio}} includes automatic the header. Thanks. Rago (talk) 19:43, 17 December 2015 (UTC)

78.26's RFA Appreciation award

The 78.26 RFA Appreciation award
Thank you for the participation and support at my RFA. It is truly appreciated. I hope to be of further help around here, and if you see me doing something dumb, you know where to find me. Again, I thank you. 78.26 (spin me / revolutions) 02:22, 24 December 2015 (UTC)

So you know the rule instead of me continuing to fix your mistake. Of course, the last few people I fixed the article and left a talk message about it, they yelled and reverted. So, no matter what, I get yelled at, just like you did. Bgwhite (talk) 08:24, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

@Bgwhite: Hey now, I didn't yell at you and I'd like to offer my sincere apologies if you took it that way. I think the best way to go about it is to make the fix and leave a gentle talk message including the diff. It shows people what the mistake was and how it's fixed and it doesn't revert other things that took place in that edit (I was making changes to comply with WP:DABPRIMARY and your undo reverted that). I'd be surprised if you've been consistently yelled at for simply explaining a rule to someone... Maybe you just had a string of bad luck. Thanks for your work! Merry Christmas, -- Tavix (talk) 14:54, 25 December 2015 (UTC)

Some bubble tea for you!

Thank you for using the subtlest way (the thank button on my discussion closure edit) to remind me that I had yet to delete some of the RfD items that I had closed as delete. Merry Christmas. Deryck C. 23:03, 25 December 2015 (UTC)
@Deryck Chan: Happy to help! I "thanked" you because that edit summary made me smile, so it was a way to acknowledge that. I did notice a discussion you closed as "delete" was still blue, but didn't think anything of it since sometimes it takes a while for the link to change colors. If it's still blue a day later or something, that's when I check it out and G6 it if necessary. Merry Christmas to you too! Red River

Thanks for doing this and closing the RfD. A long time ago, some editor suggested to me that it's better to advise on the proper course of action and let the editor do it themselves, rather than doing it for them, so that inexperienced editors get to see how things are done. I thought that was good advice, so now it's usually how I address these sorts of requests. I just thought I'd share the advice with you; our colleague Anomalocaris is very obviously not a newbie. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 17:17, 29 January 2016 (UTC)

Ivanvector: I appreciate Tavix taking care of this, and in the future if I want to delete a redirect so I can move another article to its name, I'll try to remember how it was done this time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anomalocaris (talkcontribs)
@Anomalocaris: a lot of these cases qualify for WP:G6 speedy deletion if the redirect has no history. You can use {{db-move}} to shortcut the process. Ivanvector 🍁 (talk) 17:30, 29 January 2016 (UTC)
@Ivanvector: Hmm, that's interesting advice. I've thought that doing something for someone once shows them exactly how to do it, so they can actually see how it's done and they'll have a reference to use in the future. An analogy would be a teacher doing an example problem before students are turned loose to do their assignment. Doing it this way also closes the wrong forum discussion faster so others don't have to waste time with it. I'd be curious to know which philosophy is "better." Next time I see this situation, I'll do it your way, at the very least to see how it works, and I'll go from there. Thanks for the note! -- Tavix (talk) 18:43, 30 January 2016 (UTC)

Help with RfD nom

Hi, remember those Main Page redirects (that I had trouble to nominate. I have found a similar set of those that point to Wikipedia, and I think they should be dealt in the same way. Could you do me a favour and nominate them, they are at User:Champion/Redirects to Wikipedia and the nom is on today's RfD page. FYI if you were wondering how I made the list, I used this. Help would be much appreciated. Thanks. - Champion (talk) (contribs) (Formerly TheChampionMan1234) 06:18, 8 March 2016 (UTC)

Update:I have added them all to the nom, but haven't yet marked the R's. - Champion (talk) (contribs) (Formerly TheChampionMan1234) 06:25, 8 March 2016 (UTC)
@Champion:, I went ahead and cleaned up the nomination a little bit, but you did a good job. I did remove Wikipædia from the nomination, as that one isn't a foreign language (see, for example, Encyclopædia Britannica). I hope you don' mind! -- Tavix (talk) 16:13, 8 March 2016 (UTC)

Miss february 1990 listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Miss february 1990. Since you had some involvement with the Miss february 1990 redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. —Anomalocaris (talk) 08:17, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

Untitled Redirects

What do you think about making a request at MediaWiki talk:Titleblacklist regarding "untitled"? It could be shown that they are consistently deleted at RfD. It is easy to make a request to create a page with "untitled" in it if needed (e.g. one listed at untitled). Best Regards,Godsy(TALKCONT) 00:19, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

I'd be against that, believe it or not. If you check out the prefix index for "untitled" and the Untitled disambiguation page, there are a lot of legitimate articles and redirects. What I'd like to see happen instead is to crack down on is deleting "untitled" articles before they become redirects, a la WP:HAMMER. Now, I would've just nominated these types of redirects for WP:G6, but they've been objected to in the past (eg: Nyttend wanted to keep ROH's Untitled PPVs), so they technically wouldn't be "uncontroversial" maintenance. -- Tavix (talk) 00:50, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
If we have an article about such a topic, it's entirely reasonable to have "untitled" in the article name. I agree with Tavix that the problem is the inclusion of articles about such topics; the presence of "untitled" in their names isn't a problem. Nyttend (talk) 01:06, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

FAMA

It's okay, I wouldn't have expected anyone who hasn't heard of FAMA to check search results for 農夫 and accidentally discover there is a rap duo by this name! Deryck C. 09:32, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

@Deryck Chan: Yes, but FAMA is the first result when one searches for 農夫 on Wikipedia. I almost always do at least a basic search before nominating a redirect and I did't do that this time. That comment was just me trout-slapping myself. It's all good though, we got the redirect where it needs to be! -- Tavix (talk) 00:18, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

Thanks but I thought that was a quick reply from Ivanvector because of the quick posts and his (I think) post before... but nicely done in fun, I !voted properly afterwards. I'll amend the jibe back cos I was assuming it was Ivanvector and he and I have a good-humoured Canada vs. UK jibe every now and again, just because of timing I didn't think to look at the sig, my apols, but don't want to offend either of you accidentally. Si Trew (talk) 23:46, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

To make it clear, I laughed genuinely at your wit and I am glad my feed joke was taken well, what a serious place Wikipedia can be sometimes and serious but well-humoured discussion I always think is better, I am sorry to labour the point, but things so easily go awry when written; yours didn't except I got the wrong guy giving the punch and credit where it's due, when you set up a joke and it is not knocked down it is more disappointing. I know WP is not a place to make jokes (I use the Usenet Oracle for that) but a bit of a smile in real life can sometimes ease things along. Si Trew (talk) 23:54, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
I'm glad you got a laugh out of it! Wikipedia can be a place to make jokes if you know where to look! See WP:LOL, for example. -- Tavix (talk) 00:18, 20 April 2016 (UTC)

I'm not sure what you're asking, but both the redirect and the name of the article looks fine to me. -- Tavix (talk) 19:11, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Use your best judgment

WHat do you think I am doing old bean? Am listing stacks at CSD, retargeting and doing so for other obvious ones, the ones I bring to RfD because I have enough judgment to know I can't judge it. What do you think I am doing? I can give up ploughing through the list if you want. My best judgment is to list a few at RfD if I am in doubt. Si Trew (talk) 22:34, 6 May 2016 (UTC)

I just wanted to make sure you weren't going to take all Neelix redirects to RFD, even if you felt it should be kept. Thanks for the clarification! -- Tavix (talk) 19:11, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

RfD

I am not sure it was you but I got an edit conflict I think you are around so I better stand off from RfD and I will do the lists of the Neelix redirects mostly at CSD. Si Trew (talk) 00:14, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Don't let edit conflicts discourage you! The only way we can get through this list is if we're diligent to get it done! -- Tavix (talk) 19:11, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Neelix redirects

My attention did not fall upon the discussion, but please note that while I deleted the redirect "sea devils" did not delete "sea devil"". Neelix had a habit, inexplicable to me, of creating redirects in both the singular and plural, which is wholly unnecessary except in rare cases where the spellings of the two are markedly different. --Anthony Bradbury"talk" 18:33, 10 May 2016 (UTC)

Yeah, I noticed that. I just retargeted the other one after I closed the discussion. Thanks for all your hard work! -- Tavix (talk) 19:11, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
also, my deletion of ="Nuestra Señora de Candelaria Parish Church (Mabitac)" which received a Weak keep !vote. Apparently wrong, but you can in fact see that "Nuestra Senora de Candelaria Parish Church (Mabitac)" is retained. The difference is the acent over the "n"; I was pretty sure that an editor on the English Wikipedia would not search using that.--Anthony Bradbury"talk" 20:35, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

Hockey on the ice listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Hockey on the ice. Please participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. . Right now this links to bandy, which is quite ridiculous if you ask me. Hockey on ice is ice hockey, and the redirect should justifiably go to that page. That's precisely why I always read each RFA before I give my vote. If your intent is to continue to building the project with tools you acquire you have my support. I've seen far too many admin editors who found themselves the target of harassment because they didn't quite understand the purpose of getting them in the first place. have a clean mop! (don't worry, it won't stay that way)

Congratulations on your successful RFA!
Allow me to impart the words of wisdom I received from the puppy after my RFA passed – nine long, sordid, I-should-have-found-a-better-hobby years ago:
  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version. (I got nothing here. It's inevitable.)
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. Without exception, you will pick the wrong one to do. (See #5.)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll. (You'll attract many more of those now, because mop. They must like to drink the dirty water in the bucket.)
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block, because really, what else is there to live for?
  5. Remember that when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology. It will not be a personal attack because we are admins and, therefore, we are all rouge anyway.
  6. Finally, remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Congrats on the RfA

I heard via another user late last night that your RfA succeeded. Well done and you will be excellent at it. Apparently my advocacy created some kerfuffle but I was deliberately standing off looking as I didn't want any accusation of WP:CANVASSing beyond saying that you didn't, I imagine that comes from the four or five personal attacks I get every day for listing Neelix redirects at CSD so my name is now "known". Oddly, the licence I granted to Wikipedia does not exclude me suing for libel and since I use my real name yet I "blacken" another user's name who I don't even know his real name, I am the one who can take any other Wikipedian to court if I find a personal attack against me. Odd, that. I don't mean you, we always argue WP:CIVILly at RfD and I don't know how to measure it but I bet it is about half and half who "wins". Or, I just simply resign and then the Neelix list will never get finished because nobody else is diligently doing it. I am trogging through them nobody else is and yet get personally attacked usually four or five times a day. Don't bother me that much what are they going to do come to Hungary with a brick to throw it through my window? But, yes, it hurts sometimes when all I am trying to do is make the encylopaeidia better. I'll keep going with them since the general consensus seems to be that is the right thing to do. I am not going to get every one right of course. Congratulations, thoroughly deserved. Si Trew (talk) 08:08, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

Hey, Si! Hope getting all that off your chest has helped you. Lots of people like ol' Neelix, because all things considered, he's a good editor to work with, as many of us have done on occasion. So yeah, I like Neelix, and I like you, too. So there's no way anyone should fault you for diligently looking after the interests of our community. Thank you for that, sincerely! CfD deletion

Do you mind undeleting Category:1315 in the Old Swiss Confederacy? That one needs another CfD; it wasn't a part of the actual nominated categories and was improperly listed as one of the ones that would be emptied. It's not empty. I'm doing the follow-up nomination. ~ RobTalk 17:42, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

Actually, nevermind, this seems like WP:SNOW/WP:IAR territory. ~ RobTalk 17:42, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
@BU Rob13: Yeah, it wouldn't make sense to keep random years just because they weren't included in the original nomination. Do let me know if I accidentally delete something though, I can see that happening! -- Tavix (talk) 17:46, 3 June 2016 (UTC)
Everything looked right to me other than those few extraneous years that I had planned to renominate. I re-categorized them appropriately now, so everything should be good. I wish Cydebot could have done all that, but it was outside the simple use cases the bot usually handles. Thanks! ~ RobTalk 17:48, 3 June 2016 (UTC)

twodabs

I don't understand this edit summary or your removal of the CSD. There are 2 articles on the dab page, one at the primary topic. So the dab page is an unnecessary dab page and should be CSD'd. What's the problem? PamD 06:44, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

Certainly. The rules stated at {{db-dab}} states: a disambiguation page which either disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title. Shin Min-a (disambiguation) disambiguates between two pages, so it doesn't fit either criterion. I still think it should be deleted via WP:TWODABS, but it's not speedy-able. In this case, the WP:PROD works fine, and gives others a chance to find more links. -- Tavix (talk) 11:56, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
Ah yes, I see. So many different rules, so many silly dab pages ... Thanks. PamD 08:26, 5 June 2016 (UTC)

Redirects are costly

Tavix, I see you moved a userpage over to Wikipedia:Redirects are costly. However, looks like there was a MfD with the consensus that the essay actually belongs in userspace. Oiyarbepsy (talk) 05:06, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

  • Yes, Godsy, you would be correct. I thought moving the essay would be a better solution than having a CNR, and didn't notice the MFD until a bit later. I think RFD has evolved to the point where people might be more accepting of the essay, at the very least as a rebuttal to WP:CHEAP (which is also an essay). I don't see the harm in having it in Wiki-namespace, noting that consensus can change. Thanks for the kind words, Godsy. Best, -- Tavix (talk) 14:38, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

Hi Tavix! It's great to see you wielding the mop! Or do you have a new/better scheme or archiving your talk page? Just curious, thanks. -- œ 05:48, 7 June 2016 (UTC)

I wanted to practice using the history merge tool, and the first thing I thought of was using my talk page archives. In the past, I had archived by moving my talk page to an archive page, but I wasn't consistent about it and had re-archived a few things so the history wasn't in sync with the contents. I figured the easiest way to "fix" that would be by merging the history so that everything before an archive would be in my main talk page. -- Tavix (talk) 15:32, 7 June 2016 (UTC)
Ah, that's what I figured too. :) Thanks! -- œ 02:30, 8 June 2016 (UTC)

Pruned tree

I think your redirect is not really careful enough : if you read the target article, there is only one occurence of "pruned tree" and as far as I can see, no definition. This is data loss and this makes the article incomplete and unanderstandable. Typically in this kind of situation you want to know a definition for some term and ... you get redirected to the article you are reading. This kind of not careful merges hurts wikipedia articles about maths very bad. TomT0m (talk) 11:04, 12 June 2016 (UTC)

If you want to add the definition to the article, then please, by all means go for it! -- Tavix (talk) 01:11, 16 June 2016 (UTC)

Acts of Mar Mari

Hello Tavix, I saw you nominated a couple of redirects for deletion. I would like to have your opinion on why editors won't includ their opinions at my nomination for the Acts of Mar Mari. I would really want to recreate the article as an independent. Your thoughts please. Thnx! — JudeccaXIII (talk) 22:09, 18 June 2016 (UTC)

@JudeccaXIII: You don't need to have a redirect deleted to create an article, you can write one over the existing redirect (just edit the page, remove the contents, and start writing!) If you still want to wait, you don't have anything to worry about. Per WP:RGUIDE, any RFD that doesn't have any "keep" opinions will default to delete. You can check out WP:SILENCE for an essay on why that's the case. Happy editing! -- Tavid (talk) 21:02, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
OK, So if no one places a keep, it should do an automatic delete is what u said? — JudeccaXIII (talk) 22:14, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
Yes, that's what will happen. -- Tavid (talk) 23:26, 19 June 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for your replies, and one more thing, How long does this process last with no comments from editors? — JudeccaXIII (talk) 02:37, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
No problem, discussions normally last one week. -- Tavix (talk) 02:47, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

Re: PRODs

Sorry you had to revert all of those articles marked w/ PROD. This is the first time someone has raised concerns to me about redirecting song titles to album articles. ---Another Believer (Talk)

@Another Believer: No problem! I got a little thumb workout in as I'm on my phone right now, but it's all good. In the future, I'd recommend tagging those redirects with {{R from song}} as that gives a little explanation as to why you're creating those redirects. It might prevent this situation from happening in the future. Cheers, -- Tavix (talk) 04:53, 20 June 2016 (UTC)
Thanks. ---Another Believer (Talk) 04:54, 20 June 2016 (UTC)

Moving pages

Hi. Thanks for moving pages to X as food. I think you missed one. Could you please move Dog meat to Dog as food. Many thanks. DrChrissy (talk) 21:16, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

@DrChrissy: I declined to do so as that article has a different formatting. I found consensus that "X as food" was better to use than "X (food)" but since no one besides you discussed that article, I couldn't find consensus there. That being said, I do think another WP:RM on that one would be beneficial. Would you like to start it up? -- Tavix (talk) 21:23, 22 June 2016 (UTC
Will do, thanks. DrChrissy (talk) 21:44, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
@DrChrissy: Great! I reformatted your request so it'll show up in the log at WP:RM. The instructions are at WP:RMCM if you ever want to request a page moved in the future. Best, -- Tavix (talk) 22:04, 22 June 2016 (UTC)
Thanks again. DrChrissy (talk) 22:08, 22 June 2016 (UTC)

Big state deletion

Hello, I don't really see the logic behind deleting big state, perhaps you can explain it to me? Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2016 June 17#Big state Siuenti (talk)

@Siuenti: Better yet, I'll relist it and add my comments as a !vote. I felt that the "delete" arguments were stronger, but I don't want you to feel like it was a supervote and I'd like for you to have a chance to reply to my comments in a more open forum. -- Tavix (talk) 15:32, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

Policy and guidelines

Hello Tavix, Do you know the policy for education and school articles. I'm not entirely confident about edits at El Shorouk Academy after this discussion: hello. Thank you & Cheers! — JudeccaXIII (talk) 22:35, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

  • @JudeccaXIII: You may find that at WP:SCHOOLOUTCOMES. While not a policy or guideline, it outlines what typically happens with schools during WP:AFD discussions. As long as the article in question meets the standards at WP:GNG, it'll be fine no matter what kind of school it is. I hope that helps, that's not really my area of expertise. -- Tavix (talk) 22:41, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Is the draft for Director General of Indian Coast Guard accepted or not? I can see the article but I was not notified anything about the accepting it and on the talk page of the article, it shows as Draft-class article and I can neither see the article in articles created by me on X! Tools. KCVelaga ☚╣✉╠☛ 03:14, 10 July 2016 (UTC)

January 1, 2003 listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect January 1, 2003. Since you had some involvement with the January 1, 2003 redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. All other such MDY date redirects are also nominated. Pppery (talk) 00:38, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

rm superfluous heading

Why remove the header? DGG nominated the two redirects separately, so the "this redirect's entry" link on Cavalcading now goes to a section header that doesn't exist; it looks odd, but having two headers seems to me to be the simplest option for someone who reaches RFD from the redirect. Please leave a note at my talk, or leave me a ping, so that I know you've responded. Nyttend (talk) 00:44, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

I did that because that's the proper way to bundle on RFD. For example, if you bundle 40 redirects, it wouldn't make sense to have 40 headings. There should be an anchor within each redirect's entry, so it'll go to that redirect's line instead of the header when one doesn't exist. -- Tavix (talk) 03:26, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
I was unaware that the coding included an anchor; I left the header because I figured that it was the only way to take readers directly to that section. Nyttend (talk) 01:38, 19 July 2016 (UTC)
No problem, it's something I had to double check as well. To be honest, I've never even thought about that before you brought it to my attention, and I've made probably 100+ bundled nominations. I guess it's something I've taken for granted. -- Tavix (talk) 01:57, 19 July 2016 (UTC)

Sneaky

Hello, friendly Tavix. I want to thank you for leaving your thoughts on Yeshua (name). However, I want to apologize for missing your fiasco party at the talk page. I really wish I was invited! So I could be told how I am canvassing when I am not. But again, I could say the same about you, my friend ;) Listen, I don't want drama, but I don't like you falsely accusing me in front of the whole Wikipedia community. Why not tell me via email, or on my talk page? I was not canvassing nor was that my intention or purpose for notifying my friend Juju. I just wanted them to leave their thoughts on the matter. But I am certainly fine with you leaving yours, as long as it is not a personal matter, grudge, or false canvass accusation. If you want to talk about it, let me know my friend. Cheers! Oh, and want to congratulate you on becoming an admin! I encourage you to work at AfC that benefit the community. Ḉɱ̍ 2nd anniv. 01:06, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
@CookieMonster755: I appreciate your message. I wasn't trying to start drama or anything, I was just making sure there was transparency regarding how the discussion was advertised, and it seems like Jujutsuan took it the wrong way. Hopefully there's no hard feelings on the matter. As far as AFC, I wish I could help out there, but I've got enough on my to-do list as is. Maybe I'll check it out if I get burned out at my current projects. Best, -- Tavix (talk) 05:41, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
Oh no Tavix, no hard feelings Cheers, Ḉɱ̍ 2nd anniv. 16:45, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

No rationale?

Don't you think a close of a closely contested RM like at Talk:Mooloolaba deserves at least a closing rationale statement from the closer? Dicklyon (talk) 22:07, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

The closer doesn't need to give an additional statement. In this case, I didn't see the need to clarify anything further. -- Tavix (talk) 22:35, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
Not to but in where my opinion wasn't asked, but given that the vote was split very evenly, it does seem like a comment justifying choosing one side over the other would be more appropriate than no comment. juju (hajime! | waza) 22:46, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
I don't normally leave additional comments on my closures, unless it's needed for procedural or clarification purposes. When I write additional unnecessary comments, it usually seems to come off like a !vote, and I think the closure should have impartiality. -- Tavix (talk) 22:56, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
OK, your vote is better than making it a supervote. Dicklyon (talk) 23:19, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

If you're not willing to state your rationale on close cases, please do not close them. Dicklyon (talk) 23:18, 23 July 2016 (UTC)

I will state my rationale when I feel one is necessary. Thanks, -- Tavix (talk) 23:18, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
That's good, but please also state one when it looks like others would feel one is necessary. Thanks in advance. Dicklyon (talk) 23:24, 23 July 2016 (UTC)
Pretty disgraceful to close an RFC without stated rationale, to favour minority opinion. Tony (talk) 02:36, 24 July 2016 (UTC)
Technically it was an RM... and "disgraceful" might be a little harsh... juju (hajime! | waza) 03:24, 24 July 2016 (UTC)

Newsletter

Thanks, I was debating doing that as well. Couldn't decide if the spam reverts were worth it. :) I was like whoa where did this come from and who is this guy who sent it. I had never seen him editing hockey articles before. -DJSasso (talk) 17:20, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

@Djsasso: I was so confused waking up to a Hockey newsletter when I thought we weren't doing those. So I decided to look into it a bit more, and was even more confused to see it coming from someone who isn't active in the project and without any input from the project itself. Seeing the promotion of task forces is what pushed it over the edge for me, that's not something I'd like to encourage. -- Tavix (talk) 17:26, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
I just found that he named himself WikiProject Co-ordinator as well on the project participant list. Such an odd thing for someone to do who has never been active in the project. Which has made me notice that I didn't do my semi-annual clean up this year which I will do now. -DJSasso (talk) 17:28, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
Weird. That also reminds me that I never re-added myself to the participant list. I was active in 2008-09, but am just starting to edit hockey articles again in the last ~6 months or so. -- Tavix (talk) 17:31, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

History has repeated itself

So I created a redirect on the Chinese Wikipedia titled zh:中國共產黨亡 (Communist Party of China perish) and redirected it to the corresponding page to Hidden character stone. Minutes afterwards, it was take to the XfD (They don't have separate forums for AfD, RfD, TfD etc.). It was claimed that it was an attacking redirect, even though I said it is mentioned at the target, it was still described as attacking (zh:Wikipedia:頁面存廢討論/記錄/2016/08/16. It is a perfectly valid redirect, and someone even called it a misleading search term and the reader may be looking for WP:CRYSTAL information, I had a little argument at zh:Talk:中國共產黨亡 and User:南极的熊 said that people would look for info about when the CPC collapses rather than info on an obscure stone. How many differences are there! I have justification for creating such a redirect, the Chinese Wikipedia, in my opinion, is as corrupt as the regime is. It reminded me of the many discussions that have occurred here at RfD, especially the one at Wikipedia:Redirects_for_discussion/Log/2016_March_1#Windows_Technical_Support
Give me back my redirect! Give the rights back to the editors!. - Champion (talk) (contribs) (Formerly TheChampionMan1234) 05:34, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

Lip-synced

You deleted the redirect Lip-synced citing Wikipedia:Neelix mass deletions. That issue is about thousands of redirects, so it seems likely that this specific redirect was a baby thrown out with the bathwater. "What links here" lists four articles. Any objection if I restored it? Art LaPella (talk) 21:47, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

@Art LaPella: No objection from me, I've went ahead and restored it. I've cycled though probably 10,000 redirects, so I'm bound to make a mistake every once in a while and delete one that's useful. That redirect was one of them. If you happen to see any more like that, feel free to recreate them. Happy editing! -- Tavix (talk) 23:30, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Redirects

May I kindly ask you to stop creating make-work projects by deleting popular and useful redirects, please? I do understand the process and am aware of the fact that Bossanoven, a sockpuppet of TyrusThomas4lyf was once a productive editor in my area of interest. But a single glance of where his redirects lead should not be that much of a challenge. For example if SS-Scharführer redirects to Scharführer, The Holocaust in German-occupied Poland redirects to The Holocaust in Poland, and Thomas Toivi Blatt redirects to Thomas Blatt deleting them inevitably produces redlinks showing up in multiple articles and therefore would need to be recreated. I don't have time nor desire for undoing your own efforts in this way. Thanks in advance for your kind understanding. Poeticbent talk 18:51, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

If you see a redirect that should be created, then create it! Thanks, -- Tavix (talk) 19:35, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Removal of William Lawton Page

Dear Tavix- Thank you for all the excellent editing work you have been doing on Wikipedia over many years.

Please allow me to ask about your deletion of the page "William Lawton." I believe the page to be of important informational interest and should be re-instated if possible, or that improvements be made to address concerns you have about the content. William Lawton is an important community activist working to help many families in Southeast Asia and Papua New Guinea.

If you go to the following web page you will can see the work Mr. Lawton has funded in China, the Philippines, and the war torn break-away island from Papua New Guinea. He has is also working to provide loans to small businessmen and businesswomen in Malaysia. http://www.seagateglobal.com/poge-1

In my opinion the page on Mr. Lawton and his background was not promotional, was not conflicted and provides information on an important public figure whom is helping over 150,000 families through POGE. Plus his achievements such as helping to set up the central bank of China, The People's Bank of China, make him notable.

Please also go to the Facebook page for POGE: https://www.facebook.com/pogecorporative page and review the important work he is doing to educate people from the war torn island of Bougainville. Deleting the William Lawton page on Wikipedia means that the Wikipedia users will not have information about this important public figure.

There was little discussion of the removal, so it is not clear why the page was removed.

Could you please provide me more information as to your thoughts? Thank you

we can't go by intrinsic importance, because who are we to judge intrinsic importance. We're not experts. We have no way of evaluating whether this work is significant or trivial. So we have to go by the sourcing: it reliable sources treat him as important, then we can make an article. There is one shortcut that is often helpful: a major national level award. The lkey word there is major, not local ,not routine, not very specialized. DGG ( talk ) 05:08, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Dea Tavix and DGG. Thank you for your reply. William Lawton has been given several international awards and has numerous independent sources references that were not included in the article. I can add those to the article that was previously posted and meet the notability guidelines you cited. Can I edit the prior article, or do I have to start a new article? Thank you for your guidance.Berkeley222 (talk) 16:54, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

I'll let you draft an article using the Articles for creation process if you can prove notability using the criteria at WP:GNG. After it's drafted, a reviewer will come by and accept or reject your draft. If it's accepted, it'll once again be a published article. Best, -- Tavix (talk) 21:37, 21 August 2016 (UTC)

Thanks. I will give it another try. Berkeley222 (talk) 22:14, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

Hi Tavix. Please could you restore the above article so I can bring the following links which highlight Gannon's notability under WP:GNG to the attention of those who voted to delete the article in the deletion debate and improve the article to the required standard. I realise the deletion debate was only recently but unfortunately I didn't get the chance to do this then and it got deleted very speedily. See: [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]. They are just an example of some of the articles relating to Gannon showing coverage across a range of national and international media. Many thanks, --IrishTennis (talk) 02:44, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

Typically, footballers need to have played in one of WP:FOOTY's list of fully professional leagues to have an article on Wikipedia. It was determined at WP:Articles for deletion/Sean Gannon (footballer) that he does not meet the criteria for inclusion at this time. If you'd like to appeal the decision, see WP:DRV. Thanks, -- Tavix (talk) 03:50, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I am aware of that, however footballers may also meet the WP:GNG criteria, and in this case (as shown by the links I have presented) I feel Gannon passes the test. Unfortunately these were not presented at the time of the deletion discussion and I feel they would change the outcome entirely. --IrishTennis (talk) 04:15, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
It's possible. You're more than welcome to make that case at WP:DRV if you'd like. Best, -- Tavix (talk) 05:26, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
No problem. Have done that below, thanks. --IrishTennis (talk) 13:08, 26 August 2016 (UTC)
