New Page Triage engagement strategy released

[edit]

Hey guys!

I'm dropping you a note because you filled out the New Page Patrol survey, and indicated you'd be interested in being contacted about follow-up work. This is to notify you that we've finally released both the initial documentation about the project and also the engagement strategy, which sets out how we plan to work with the community on this. Please give both a read, and leave any comments or suggestions you have on the talkpage, on my talkpage, or in my inbox - okeyes@wikimedia.org.

It's awesome to finally get to start work on this! :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 02:40, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE March drive newsletter

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (talk), Stfg (talk), and Dank (talk)

GOCE March drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive
GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graph

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! This is the most successful drive we have had for quite a while. Here is your end-of-drive wrap-up newsletter.

Participation

Of the 70 people who signed up for this drive, 40 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Special acknowledgement goes out to Lfstevens, who did over 200 articles, most of them in the last third of the drive, and topped all three leaderboard categories. You're a superstar! Stfg and others have been pre-checking the articles for quality and conformance to Wikipedia guidelines; some have been nominated for deletion or had some preliminary clean-up done to help make the copy-edit process more fun and appealing. Thanks to all who helped get those nasty last few articles out of the target months.

Progress report

During this drive we were successful in eliminating our target months—October, November, and December 2010—from the queue, and have now eliminated all the 2010 articles from our list. We were able to complete 500 articles this month! End-of-drive results and barnstar information can be found here.

When working on the backlog, please keep in mind that there are options other than copy-editing available; some articles may be candidates for deletion, or may not be suitable for copy-editing at this time for other reasons. The {{GOCEreviewed}} tag can be placed on any article you find to be totally uneditable, and you can nominate for deletion any that you discover to be copyright violations or completely unintelligible. If you need help deciding what to do, please contact any of the coordinators.

Thank you for participating in the March 2012 drive! All contributions are appreciated. Our next copy-edit drive will be in May.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (Talk), Stfg (Talk), and Dank (talk)

GOCE May mid-drive newsletter

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors May 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

Participation: Out of 49 people signed up for this drive so far, 26 have copy-edited at least one article. It's a smaller group than last drive, but we're making good progress. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive, largely due to the efforts of Lfstevens and the others on the leaderboard. Thanks to all. We have reduced our target group of articles—January, February, and March 2011—by over half, and it looks like we will achieve that goal. Good progress is being made on the overall backlog as well, with over 500 articles copy-edited during the drive so far. The total backlog currently sits at around 3200 articles.

Hall of Fame: GOCE coordinator Diannaa was awarded a spot in the GOCE Hall of Fame this month! She has copy-edited over 1567 articles during these drives, and surpassed the 1,000,000-word mark on May 5. On to the second million! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa and Stfg

Bacon Challenge

[edit]

Sorry to be always on your toes about this, but are we having a Bacon Challenge/Wikicup 2013 this year? It was great fun last time and I'd like the chance to enter again. It says at the top you're on vacation; I hope I'm not disturbing anything but I want to stir up the challenge and get it going again. Rcsprinter (speak) 20:34, 21 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there! Long time no see. Extremely outdated message, but here we go...I'm afraid I'm not planning on hosting another Bacon Challenge this year, as fun as it has been in the past :( I've basically been on hiatus here on Wikipedia since April (though this may change soon), and looking at the trend overall, the popularity of the Bacon Challenge has been on the decline since the beginning of the Challenge. Simply put, I'm not planning to run another one due to my own inactivity, and an overall lack of interest in the event. Sorry! Thanks for the interest and all the work you've put into it. Of course, this doesn't mean someone else can't take over running the Bacon Challenge ;) ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 05:24, 16 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE November 2012 copy edit drive update

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors November 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

  • Participation: Out of 31 people signed up for this drive so far, 22 have copy-edited at least one article. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!
  • Progress report: We're on track to meet our targets for the drive. We have reduced our target group of articles—November and December 2011—by over 50%, and 34 of the the 56 requests made in September and October this year have already been fulfilled. However, the rate of tagging for copy edit has increased, and this month we are just keeping the size of the backlog stable. So, all you copy editors, please do come along and help us!
  • The September 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest was won by Baffle gab1978 for his copy edit of Expulsion of the Acadians. Runner up was Gareth Griffith-Jones for his edit of I Could Fall in Love. Congratulations to both.
  • The October 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the discussion and voting stage until midnight November 30 (UTC). You don't have to make a submission to vote!
  • November 2012 Copy Edit of the Month Contest is in the submissions stage until midnight November 30 (UTC), when discussion and voting begin.
  • Seasonal oversight: We had a slight fall from grace in the title of our last newletter, which mentioned the season in the northern hemisphere and thus got it wrong for the southern. Fortunately an observant GOCE member was ready to spring into action to advise us. Thanks! In future we'll stay meteorologically neutral.

Orphaned non-free media (File:Lionheart Kings' Crusade cover.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Lionheart Kings' Crusade cover.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:10, 9 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm the one that uploaded the Commons files. I received permission from the company to upload them, but there was a problem with the publisher's logo being present on the covers. I spoke to an admin on the Commons and he put the old revisions only (ones with the logos) up for deletion. You can see the discussion at commons:Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:NeocoreGames. As far as I know, there is no worry about the image actually being deleted. I reverted your change on the article. I hope this is okay with you. --Odie5533 (talk) 14:42, 19 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Twin Skies Logo.png)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Twin Skies Logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful.

Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:45, 11 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE July 2013 news report

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors July 2013 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter
  • Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. If you have signed up for the drive but have not yet participated, it isn't too late. If you haven't signed up for the drive, sign up now!
  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.

Images

[edit]

Hi, I haven't talked to you for a very long time (guess there was no point)! Can you be so kind and see this user's sandbox? He is in need of a photo of Damon Matthew Wise which he claimed can be found on his official website, Facebook, and bunch of Irish Damon Matthew Wise-related sites.--Mishae (talk) 02:00, 30 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! Sorry for this very late reply - I wasn't active when you left me that message. Not sure if you found an answer, but here is mine either way (better late than never, eh?): the images he mentions are most likely copyrighted, and not released under a free license compatible with Wikipedia. Copyrighted files like video game covers or movie scenes are allowed to be used on Wikipedia, since no free alternative would realistically exist. A picture of a person, though, could be realistically freely licensed by its author, so it's required. Nice to hear from you! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 07:00, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bat Species in your photo

[edit]

The bat species in your photo on Wikimedia (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dead_Bat.jpg#file) is the big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus. It also appears to be a juvenile bat (you can tell by the proportion of ears to head and body size).

SVG

[edit]

Quick question. I downloaded Inkspace and opened the file. But I feel like I'm missing something. I see that they have the states outside the margins of the image for users to just move into place, but they don't fit right. Am I missing something? Thank you! EvergreenFir (talk) 06:28, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hrm...I opened it up and experimented a bit. You're right that the states don't fit exactly, but it's, well, close enough. That's just the design - if you look at the navy-colored states already placed onto the map, such as Massachusetts, they don't fit exactly, either. That's fine though, and it turns out all right in this situation where 100% border-exactness isn't needed. If you click and drag the state you want (yea Utah!), position it the best you can, and give it the white border, I think it should be fine :) ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 06:39, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I'll give it a shot! (Yea Utah!!!) EvergreenFir (talk) 06:43, 21 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bloons TD

[edit]

Hey! Thanks for the help at the Teahouse!

I was wondering if you could point me toward what needs cleaning up in the Bloons Tower Defense article. The article also lacks citations; do you know a good place to find refs for video games?

Thank you! Bananasoldier (talk) 21:18, 30 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No problem! Happy to help.
Regarding the article, great job so far. It's been a while since I've worked on article content and I'm not the hottest in that department, but I'll give the article a look. This seems like a good way for me to get back into it ;)
Overall coverage of each game looks good, but I also think it's a bit long. Excessive gameplay detail isn't desirable for an encyclopedia, such as lists of all the types of towers, bloon colors, etc. (particularly for Bloons TD 4). Focusing on the key features and biggest changes between each game (graphics, game modes, new features, etc.) are the most important.
I think the next best place to look at is the reception section, since it only mentions a couple of games right now. It's complicated since it's going to cover the entire series. I'd look at the Grand Theft Auto series' reception section as a good example; we can provide an overall impression of the entire series, then get into game-specific ratings (with a table?).
Also, question: I believe the article should be moved to Bloons TD, since the series seems to have been renamed? Unless I'm missing something.
For reliable sources related to video gaming, Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Sources provides more information than you could ever want about video game sourcing. This list provides a comprehensive list of commonly accepted sources, along with custom Google searches set up so your search only returns results from the listed websites. Hope this helps! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 00:59, 31 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, gotcha. Kevin from NYS sounds pretty cool. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 14:08, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You were supportive of the idea that Jehochman proposed: "A message is most effective when it matches the format of the media. We're an encyclopedia. On Feb 11, I suggest we fill our front page with articles, blurbs and news about mass spying and privacy. That will send a strong message, and help educate people. It's sort of like what we do on April 1, except serious instead of foolish."

Since this proposal received so much support, I and several others have done our best to begin the process of implementation. That said, the proposal is very controversial with Main Page insiders who have, understandably, objections that boil down to WP:NOTADVOCATE.

It's valuable to have feedback from people who oppose any deviation from the status quo, but we really need feedback from people who understood Jehochman idea, supported it, and could tell us whether we're succeeding in "implementing the vision" that Jehochman laid out and how to improve the proposal.

If you have the time, would you lend your view over at Wikipedia:Surveillance awareness day. If you want to see a list of custom content that could be available, we have a Arbitrary mockup #2, that shows lots of proposed content on one page.

Your feedback is most appreciated. --HectorMoffet (talk) 09:55, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome to see the proposal come this far! I've been a bit busy this weekend, but I'll try to provide input where I can. Thanks for the update, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 20:24, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey! I was wondering if you'd be interested in doing a collaboration for Draft:Honest Kids, which is a juice brand. Thanks, --Bananasoldier (talk) 05:26, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've been a bit busy, but I'd love to help. I'm not sure about the availability of sources, though - do you think it might be better as a section in the Honest Tea article? ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 07:37, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I agree. As far as I know, Honest Kids doesn't have a logo, either. We'd have the freedom to work with all the other brands as well as the company's history, etc. Bananasoldier (talk) 16:35, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the Honest Tea article history, I noticed an edit war that occurred between August 19, 2013 and August 22, 2013 between MrOllie and Bethesda36. I have no experience in dispute resolution, and I was wondering if you know how to deal with these situations. Thanks, --Bananasoldier (talk) 17:36, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Expanding Honest Kids sounds good to me, then! As for the edit war, there's really nothing to do at this point. Usually when there's an active edit war going on, you'd want to follow the instructions here, which could involve warning the users, or reporting them to the edit warring noticeboard depending on the circumstances. Since that edit war took place months ago though, there's nothing to do - blocks are to prevent disruption and encourage change, not to punish. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 20:07, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, got it. Thanks. Bananasoldier (talk) 23:56, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Jett

[edit]

Hey, Paul Jett is a legendary swimmer. He qualified for the state meet for his high school swim team in every event he swam in. He deserves recognition on the Wikipedia page for Skyline High School due to his outstanding achievements. Paul is a charitable human being, and he donates his time to a local soup kitchen.

Thanks for your consideration. Have a nice day. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.56.127.199 (talk) 17:09, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! People listed in articles should meet our notability guidelines. Basically, people need to be both significant and have been covered in multiple, secondary sources. Unfortunately being a high school swimmer by itself would not be enough to meet the notability guidelines. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:55, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

New Berlin Revert

[edit]

Hey Kevin-

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure, in the future, to follow the guidelines you linked to. They were very helpful. I didn't realize that alumni had to be notable on a scale larger than those viewing the page; the people that were listed as alumni were very notable in their community and the regional area. Sorry for any confusions, misunderstandings, consternations, frustrations, palpitations, constipations, discombobulations, or problems. By the way, I found some really cool Tony Holmsten style pictures that you may like: this one is my favorite.

Thanks! Homburgerc (talk) 06:30, 10 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted change

[edit]

I think that there is a problem with citing Clarke as a source.

Perhaps my edit was premature. However, he is apparently retired from the US government / NSA and in no position to know what they knew. At least, as far as Wikipedia reflects.

Therefore, if my edit is not acceptable, I think he should not be mentioned at all. I didn't delete information, I added it. He is being cited as an authority, while the (Wikipedia) record shows him to be not in a position to know.

If I made minor transgressions against the terms of service, it was not my intention. I stated fact (as far as I know it).

I don't yet have a Wikipedia account but I have used WP for years. Perhaps sometime I will create an account.

Bests,

68.189.111.223 (talk) 06:49, 19 April 2014 (UTC)68.189.111.223[reply]

Hey there! The reason why I reverted your edit is that we don't refer back to Wikipedia for information. This is referred to as circular referencing. We go by what reliable, third-party sources say (see Wikipedia:Reliable sources and Wikipedia:Verifiability), not what our own articles say - it wouldn't make much sense to refer to ourselves as our own source of information!
As for the issue involving Clarke, reading the cited Reuters article reveals that Clarke was apparently part of "a five-member advisory panel convened to review electronic surveillance policy", which is why he was able to comment on the NSA's involvement with Heartbleed. It may be worth clarifying this in the article(s). I'm about to head to bed, so I can't look more into this at the moment, I made a clarification of this fact in the Heartbleed article. Hope this helps! Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 06:57, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

In December, a five-member advisory panel convened to review electronic surveillance policy urged the White House to sharply curtail the use of undisclosed flaws and stop undercutting encryption standards. The panel included former White House cybersecurity advisor Richard Clarke.

In late February, a senior White House official said the Obama administration was intensively studying both issues.

The administration statements issued on Friday confirmed that the review had already "reinvigorated an interagency process for deciding when to share vulnerabilities" on a case-by-case basis.

The activities of the NSA have come under sharp scrutiny since former agency contractor Edward Snowden leaked numerous documents exposing expansive U.S. surveillance efforts.

Even before Snowden's emergence, former officials, including Clarke, told Reuters that offensive and spying considerations had dominated inside the NSA, causing it to withhold information instead of warning the public about new flaws.

Clarke told Reuters Friday that the NSA had not known of Heartbleed.

Based on the article you have provided, I still think Clarke should not be cited as an authoritive source for the Heartbleed article. From what I gather this former Bush advisor apparently said some things to Obama's administration. I'm not even going to deal with Snowden in this comment. It's not my intention to split hairs. But seriously, Clarke's claim that the NSA "did not know" doesn't carry weight to me because he was apparently inactive/retired/"not in the know" of NSA activities during the timeframe of March 2012 - April 2014.

I like open source software and support it in principle. However, delving into (and understanding millions/billions of lines of) code is not something most people do. I don't blame Obama nor Bush for an OpenSSL vulnerability that came to be by some (allegedly lone) developer. Certainly, Bush was not President during the time this vulnerability was in the wild. Nonetheless, I haven't seen evidence that Clarke was in a position to know what the NSA (nor KGB, nor MOSSAD, etc) was up to. Consequentially, I feel it is inappropriate to consider his claim as evidence that the NSA did not know. Again, in light of the present fact that Wikipedia does not show him to be in a position to know. Although the reasoning is a tad circular, I similarly take my own grandparents' opinions on "cybersecurity" with a grain of salt. In other words, [(better) source needed]

Bests,

Hey again - I understand where you're coming from, but I disagree. In my opinion, he does have the proper authority - he's got a big background with government surveillance, and was selected to be part of a panel to analyze the NSA's activity. Even if Clarke himself is not worth mentioning on his own, the result of the five-member panel's investigation is worth mentioning in the article. But what I say is moot with regards to what the sources say. It's not up to editors to decide whether or not he's got the proper authority in this situation. Multiple reliable sources in addition to the Reuters article (including ABC, NPR, and The Guardian, to name a few) considers Clarke's position and stance on the NSA to be relevant. If you wanted better sources, there are a myriad of them that consider Clarke's input to be relevant and worth mentioning. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:55, 19 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly what Clarke says is relevant and should be in the Heartbleed article, but "authoritative"? Clarke's viewpoint should be included in the neutral point of view, summarized and cited just like other sources on the same issue, but not more. This discussion should probably be on the Heartbleed talk page; I just noticed it here by accident. 70.36.142.114 (talk) 22:33, 20 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Johnny Appleseed

[edit]

Hi,

I was wondering why you deleted my post in the 'Modern Culture' section, as this is a professionally produced tribute to Johnny Appleseed

Regards,

Troy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Troylangman (talkcontribs) 05:51, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Troylangman: The reason why I (and another editor) reverted your addition was that Wikipedia articles should contain content that is significant. Content should be backed by reliable third party sources, which provide both verification and establish the significance of the subject you're writing about. In your case, if you wish to write about the music video in the Johnny Appleseed article, you'd need to find a few sources discussing the music video and its relevance to Johnny Appleseed.
As enjoyable as the linked Youtube video was, it is not significant, especially since it was just released. Imagine if every YouTube video created was mentioned in Wikipedia articles...that'd be a mess. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 06:03, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. When multiple editors have reverted your edits, pause and don't keep trying to re-add your edit. Try discussing things out before continuously reverting :) ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 06:03, 21 April 2014 (UTC)+[reply]

G'day, I am very new to Wikipedia, and still trying to work out how to use it, so appreciate your advice : )

Certainly I would not want to add any content to Johnny Appleseed's page lightly, as he is a hugely important historical figure.

I felt that as the Cannabis issue is such a huge one now, and also that the particular uTube video was professionally produced and had a good message that it was worthy of including.

My role is as CEO of the first Cannabis Medicine company in Australia, hence my interest tascann.com.au

If in time it becomes more prominent (as the video is currently very new) can we consider including on the page?

Cheers, Troy--Troylangman (talk) 06:21, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If the video ever becomes prominent enough and receives media coverage, then yes, it can be considered. Until then, though, I recommend you take a look at some of the fundamentals of Wikipedia editing. I've left a welcome message on your talk page with some useful links to check out. Also, seeing that you work in the Cannabis industry, I recommend you take a look at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. It's generally recommended that editors stay away from editing on subjects they are closely tied to, to avoid any promotion or bias. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 06:22, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you superhampster, appreciate the assistance. There is another page which is about one of our employees, which he did not write and contains a lot of misinformation. Can you please provide some advice on how we can go about tidying this up and getting factual information about him included. T--Troylangman (talk) 06:26, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Troylangman: Material clearly violating our WP:BLP policy can be removed by anyone. Any other WP:COI edits should be proposed on the article's talk page. --NeilN talk to me 06:30, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Soooooper Hamster! [2]
Re your revert at Khosa, there was a BLP page but it was deleted (several times) as the editor isn't bothering to provide any references. They then recreated, under a slightly different name. :-\ They re-reverted you too by the way! :-O. Just FYI. :-) --220 of Borg 08:11, 21 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

EXCUSE ME SIR

[edit]

Let's say there was a fish. Perhaps his name might be, oh I don't know...FREDDIE? Now let's say this fish lives in a post-apocylyptic world where fish, cars, and foxes can talk. Now let's imagine that this apocalypse was brought upon by none only than SAM. PAJAMA SAM, that is. Let's say he failed to bring peace to the world of the food and they launched an all out war on humanity. All that's left is cars, fish, and foxes. Now let's furthermore assume that this history were to be documented by, hmm I don't know, a GAME company maybe called Humongous Entertainment (from here on out referred to as He, which works out considering we also refer to God as He, so they are one and the same). He documents this history in a series of games aimed at the young minds of our current population, seeking to save their innocent souls before inevitable destruction. Hmmm, yes that would be interesting, interesting indeed. He would have created a world and brought life to it, and then told the story to young children of a new civilization. He is truly a good God. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 164.107.94.255 (talk) 07:25, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Thanks for reverting the WDAF-TV logo back to the one I had uploaded. I wrote on Dobrate's wall to ask why he thinks that it needs to be that one. I had told him that WDAF-TV's website and social media pages both use the "Fox 4 News" logo and not the "Fox 4 WDAF" logo that he had uploaded. I didn't want to get into a war with him so that is why I never reverted. Once again, thanks! Corkythehornetfan(talk) 03:24, 3 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi SuperHamster, I have nominated "Work (Iggy Azalea song)" for C/E at the Guild's request page weeks ago, and the article is currently being reviewed for GA. I've noticed you're great with C/E, punctuation, grammar et al, and was wondering if you could perhaps skip some requests in the queue and do a C/E for "Work" pretty please? I know it's a lot to ask, but the GA reviewer has said the article needs a C/E and I don't want it to fail the nomination. [Article content removed; copyright violation] ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 07:08, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Ivanlai12: Hi there. Just from taking a quick look at the article's content, there are two major problems:
  • The article is copied and pasted from the official Heilind Asia website. This is considered a copyright violation, and isn't allowed. Text on Wikipedia is released under a free license, and copying and pasting content from other sources violates copyright and isn't encyclopedic.
  • The article is also entirely promotional, due in-part to being copied from the official website. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that aims to provide a neutral, non-promotional view on its subjects.
Also, being an editor associated with the company, you are considered to have a conflict of interest with the subject, and are strongly advised against editing or creating articles about the company. Editors who edit on behalf of their companies often do so with a bias, even if unintentional. Since I strongly advise against creating an article on the company, there are two options:
  • Create the article (from scratch, not copied and pasted) in your userspace, which will allow you to work on the article freely without it actually being "released" as an article. You could do this at User:Ivanlai12/Sandbox. Note again that the article cannot promote the company you work for. Once you think your article is acceptable to be released on Wikipedia, you can submit the page for review by using Template:AFC submission. Once you request a review of your page, an experience editor will come and either accept the article or decline it with reasoning. Note that this can be a long process, especially for an editor with a conflict of interest. Many articles will be declined multiple times before being successful.
  • You can submit the subject over at Wikipedia:Requested articles, to request other editors to create the article instead.
I definitely recommend reading the pages I linked to get more info on this before doing any more work. I also recommend taking a look at some of the other links posted in the welcome message at the top of your talk page, for guides on creating articles, reliable sourcing, Wikipedia's five pillars, and more. Note that article subjects on Wikipedia also need to meet our notability guidelines, or in other words, are "significant" enough to have an article. Might seem like a lot, but at this point it takes research before an article can be created from scratch. If you have any more questions, please ask. Thanks for reaching out about this! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 07:19, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fredrik - I see you've asked and received help over at the help desk, so I'll leave it at that :) In summary of what has been said at the help desk, since the wiki you are discussing is a completely separate wiki from Wikipedia, you will have to construct the infoboxes at that wiki. Help regarding the copyrighted information.

I submitted our article for reviewed but tagged as "copyrighted information". This is my case, I'm was their web admin/master of this organization and instruct me to create wikipedia page for them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

--Designthatrock (talk) 01:31, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Designthatrock: Hey there, and thanks for asking. I've got a few points to mention, but I'll begin with answering your question first, and then stating what I believe the best course of action is.
Wikipedia's text is licensed under a free license, specifically the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license. There was no indication that the copied content was released by the company under a license compatible with Wikipedia's license, so we cannot accept it. See Wikipedia:Copy-paste for more information. If you wish to use the company's content on Wikipedia, it will need to be explicitly released under a compatible free license, which can either be made clear on the company's website where the content is sourced from, or permission can be sent from the company to Wikipedia through the OTRS process. You may be writing on the company's behalf, but the company needs to explicitly show that they have agreed to license their content accordingly. However, rarely is a good idea to copy content from other sources (even if the license is compatible), especially from companies, as the content is often promotional and/or not written in an encyclopedic tone. Chances are, the content you wish to include on Wikipedia is written in a promotional tone and would not be appropriate for an encyclopedia. And ultimately, it's generally better to have original content anyway, as there really isn't any good reason to copy-and-paste anything that could be re-written to better fit encyclopedic standards.
Going off of that, editing on behalf of an organization is frowned upon, because it often ends up in promotional content, intentional or not. You took the correct steps by going through the drafting process for review instead of directly making an article. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for more information.
At this point, I'd advise that if you want to re-create the draft, you are free to do so, and do so with original content you write. Keep in mind Wikipedia's policies about being neutral and non-promotional, and also keep in mind our notability criteria for corporations and the proper sourcing that needs to be done. Having a conflict of interest, the article will be scrutinized if it sounds promotional. I know this is a lot to hit you with, but there's a lot to be handled when creating an article. I've left a welcome message on your talk page with some helpful links and advice. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Thanks! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 02:05, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Will you help me with knowing how to write my article Native Son (American Band)

[edit]

I don't know how to phrase things, I am an English major and my usage of descriptive words are no different the the articles that I have seen on the Musician Pete Townshend of the Who or the artist (Prince).

I really don't understand why you have rejected the article...I use to work in the music industry for more than 20 years and use to be a radio announcer...

The things I am writing are from descriptions of these peoples work from their peers...

How is it suppose to read...I am simply in the beginning stages of working on this...it is going to take me more time to build each of the members profiles, which I intend to do, inclusive of each of these gentlemans works with EVERY recording artist they have worked with...THAT is why I FIRST put each of their PRIVATE wiki articles as reference links so what I have said...is verifiable if only by that...

Please let me know what I need to do...

Hi Poekneegurl - thanks for reaching out about this. When it comes to writing about the reputation and reception of a band, Wikipedia reports on what prominent sources and the general public have to say about it. From WP:SUBJECTIVE:
Wikipedia articles about art and other creative topics (e.g., musicians, actors, books, etc.) have a tendency to become effusive. This is out of place in an encyclopedia. Aesthetic opinions are diverse and subjective—we might not all agree about who the world's greatest soprano is. However, it is appropriate to note how an artist or a work has been received by prominent experts and the general public
Wikipedia isn't an authority to claim who is or isn't a great musician. Instead, Wikipedia's goal is to cover what notable sources say about it. For example, when you write that the band members "are heavy hitters in their own right, who are not only extraordinary musicians, but are lyricist, composers, producers and arrangers as well", who says that? When you say the band is "bringing pleasure to their many fans, music aficionados and connoisseurs worldwide", that's according to whom? If you simply want to say that the band members are still working, you can write "John Smith is still performing with a wide audience, with his latest work receiving X amount of downloads this year." Phrases like "bringing pleasure" and "music aficionados" are loaded when they are unsourced or not based on anything in particular.
For a nice example, take a look at Halo's critical reception section. All opinions on the piece are sourced to who said it. Note that both negative and positive reception should be included, if the subject has received prominent negative reception.
In addition, article claims should ideally be sourced with inline citations, so readers can immediately tell the source of information. If you have any more questions, please let me know. I know I hit you with a lot to take in, but I hope this all helps. Thanks! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 04:29, 8 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Native Son (American Band) article

[edit]

Thank you so much for your help and very detailed answer...the things that I list are basically from Youtube "talk" vids regarding the individuals by their peers in the industry that have used them in their concerts. So would it suffice if I said the "information came from say...George Duke on such and such a date and then refer the youtube vid? And since it came directly from his own mouth would that be considered "viable" are any of the youtube vids considered viable?? And with some of the others I have researched their backgrounds on the net, where, once again...there are things in print...I took a look at what you suggested, Halo, and I sort of understand what you mean. Thanks for that as well. I am not quite sure how to "attach" the reliable sources... you know, with the numbers after the information and the little "bubble pops up" :).

One of the other guys who let me know what I needed to do...also told me I was "emotionally" invested in the article...I kinda am, from what I have heard through the grapevine....one of the guys is having a hard time in his life and kinda unstable right now...so I was really attempting to do this, I guess in a way...to give some hope and let them see what others think, in the industry about them...

Is it also ok to quote some of the fans...like the news interviews folks to create intrest??

Thank you again SuperHamster (I use to have one when I was a kid) lol... appreciate your help..and if you'd be kind enough to school me on how to do those little number references I would be very grateful...

Have a great evening... Jess — Preceding unsigned comment added by Poekneegurl (talkcontribs) 01:54, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again Poekneegurl - here are a few points in reply to your answer:
  • YouTube videos are typically not used for reliable sources; see WP:YOUTUBE. Most videos on YouTube are copyright violations and cannot be used. If the video is officially updated by the copyright owner (i.e. a documentary from National Geographic's official channel), then that can be acceptable. However...
  • Reception should follow Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy. In basic terms, Wikipedia reports what the media reports, and gives a balanced representation that is representative of the media. In this case, YouTube videos probably aren't the best source. What are these "talk" videos you mention? What you'd want are news article, official reviews, magazine entries, etc. from reputable sources that cover the band. This includes both positive and negative reviews.
  • Being emotionally invested in the article, it will be hard to properly edit from a neutral point of view. Going through the articles for creation process is the proper process, though, since other editors will have to review your edits before they go live, so nice job with that. Just remember that we're going for an objective coverage of the subject.
  • For in-line citations, Wikipedia:Inline_citation and Help:Footnotes would be good places to start.
  • Quoting is fine, just take a look at WP:QUOTE for advice and specifics. Again, however, note what you're quoting - is the quotation from a significant figure, coming from a reliable source?
I recommend reading the linked articles for more details. Feel free to ask more questions, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:47, 9 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Twitter account edit

[edit]

Hi!

I am trying to do some edits on Wikipedia for a class project. You just commented back on my verified twitter account edit and said it read like an essay (which I am trying to fix! it's finals week so I am used to writing essays). But also you said my sources aren't reliable, should I use sources from online newspapers? And lastly, I am trying to edit the Twitter Wikipedia page, I am not trying to make a Wiki page solely for verified accounts, where should I add that when I am sending in my sandbox edit?

Thanks!! Dprotzeller (talk) 01:06, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Dprotzeller! Bleh, finals week...
In regards to sourcing, the priority is independent, reliable sources, which does mean things like newspaper articles, news stories, magazine articles, etc. WikiHow, for example, would not be considered reliable due to it also being a wiki, editable by anyone. The JustGo article also isn't too reliable of a source, seeing that it is freelance work that serves more as a how-to guide than a reputable article on the subject.
In terms of writing, it's not bad - I'd trim back on the list of people, as that's a rather indiscriminate list. I'd also remove the unsourced bit about being able to verify your Twitter account through illicit means; it's unsourced, and doesn't sound too true to me.
Since you are attempting to write an addition to an existing article, there are a lot fewer loops to jump through compared to creating an article. The Articles for Creation process is technically only for new articles, but I have seen editors put through submissions to edit existing articles. I don't recommend it, however, especially for smaller additions.
Instead, I recommend continuing to work in your sandbox, but when you are ready to submit, try one of the following (whichever works best for you):
  • Bring up the edit over at Talk:Twitter, and see what other edits have to say.
  • You could also go to the Wikipedia Teahouse and ask for a quick review. Sometimes you might not get any luck, but editors there are often willing to help out as much as they can.
  • I'm also always willing to provide input, so feel free to come back here!
Let me know if you have any more questions! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 01:43, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Armagard Rejection

[edit]

Is it possible to request that a Wikipedia peer writes this article for Armagard, because no matter how much I edit it according to the 'rules' those rules cannot be met, probably because I work for the company. Despite trying to implement the same 'tone' used by Hewlett Packard & Coca Cola, I find the article constantly refused. Because we only receive generic responses, could a more specific answer be given re: the problems. It would help us here greatly.

Thanks for your time & efforts. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Armagard (talkcontribs) 14:40 10 June 10 2014 (UTC)

Hi there - sorry to have your draft rejected! For specifics behind why your submission was rejected, I recommend reading up on pages linked to from the notes I wrote on the page. Naturally, yes, writing about your own company will lead to an article promotional in tone, even if unintended.
As for requesting someone else to create the page, you can do so over at Wikipedia:Requested articles. If the subject is found to be notable, an editor should hopefully get to it in eventually. Let me know if you have any more questions. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 16:59, 10 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

MAB Community Services Rejection Question

[edit]

Hello, I've been trying to create the MAB Community Services Wikipedia page and I understand that I need third-party reliable sources, however in the references I added third party websites mentioning MAB, including search engines and website posts about the organization, however they aren't present within the information from MAB so I didn't cite them within the Wikipedia post only in the references.

Do I need to cite them in the post for them to count? I just don't know what else I should do to make the post express its notability when I've already added outside references and that seems to be the main problem.

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mabcommunity (talkcontribs) 16:17, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Development at Mabcommunity: Hey there. Regarding the sources outside of MAB, they are still only basic directory listings of the company, many of which come from MAB itself. These sources aren't considered to have much depth or significance to them. Organizations need to meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability in order to be listed, which means that the organization requires more extensive coverage outside of basic directory listings - things like news and magazine articles, interviews, etc. You've got a good start, but more coverage is still needed.
In terms of citing, inline citations are typically preferred but not required, except in specific cases such as quotations or challengeable statements. As long as what is written in the article is verifiable through the sources, it's fine. I know this is all very general info I gave you, so let me know if you have any more questions! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 04:10, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Miss Multiverse page deleted

[edit]

Greetings Kevin, you have a very nice wikipedia page and profile... congrats!!!

I have a frustrating issue here... I have created the page Miss Multiverse, it was deleted once before about a year ago, i don´t understand why if it has all the right references, no use of promotion, just facts, there are even winners of miss universe that have participated in Miss Multiverse whom have profiles on wikipedia... and its still deleted as if this beauty pageant does not exist.

There are many smaller beauty pageants listed on wikipedia, we are just not able to comprehend why this is happening, it almost feels as if enthusiasts or supporters of other pageants are deleting this one, it takes time to learn how to use wikipedia and frustrating to see someone just come and delete it.

I will appreciate your help enormously, if you would kindly take a look and figure out a solution.

Best regards,

Jose Cuello (talk) 14:14, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Jose Cuello - thanks for the compliment! Sorry to hear about the trouble.
As it stands, your article is doing all right, with some concerns. The biggest reason behind editors taking issue with the article are concerns about its notability - everything may be true and factual, but subjects require extensive coverage in independent, reliable sources to be considered significant enough to have a Wikipedia article. Whether or not the subject is notable is something a deletion discussion would determine, if the page is ever put up for deletion (as was done once before in September 2013 as you mentioned, though the discussion had a weak consensus).
As for other smaller beauty pageants having articles, they either have more coverage and sources available, or they also lack notability. Each article is analyzed independently for notability; see WP:OTHERSTUFF for more info.
In the end, I wouldn't sweat it :) There's no shady anti-Multiverse business going on. If the article is ever put up for deletion, that's when notability concerns will be dealt with. Let me know if you have any more questions, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 17:02, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

duplicate photo uploaded

[edit]

You notified me that I inadvertently uploaded two identical photos. I am not sure how to correct that, could you help me? Thank you. Docia49 (talk) 16:34, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Docia49 - if you meant to upload another picture, you can just upload it on top of it. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and under the "File history" section, you should see a link that says "Upload a new version of this file".
Otherwise, if you wish to have the file deleted, you can slap an F1 speedy deletion tag on it. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 16:46, 13 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Kathleen Andrews

[edit]

Good Morning SuperHamster,

I recently submitted an article about Kathleen Andrews, Edmonton Alberta's very first female city bus driver. You declined the article suggesting (This submission's references do not adequately evidence the subject's notability). Im not sure if I understand correctly as I have never submitted a article to Wikipedia, but does that mean you want more 3rd party articles or confirmation that she really was the First female bus driver for Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Thank you for your help!

Lisa Andrews — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skylaa (talkcontribs) 13:45, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Skylaa: Hey there Lisa - your former point is correct. There's no doubt about the factuality of the article, but rather, whether or not the article's subject meets our notability guidelines of being covered in multiple published sources. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Thanks! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 15:45, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please remove incorrectly-placed "speedy" tag from File:Bliss magazine final issue July 2014.jpg

[edit]

Hi,

You placed a "speedy" tag on File:Bliss magazine final issue July 2014.jpg despite the fact it had already been marked with the correct "fair use" information by that point.

The file was very (and I mean *very*) briefly labelled as an "own work" before the "fair use" info was placed on top of it as- quite bluntly- it's simpler and involves less pointless jumping through hoops.

I would remove the "speedy" template myself, but strictly speaking I shouldn't as it's my upload, and I've no intention of giving some over-officious editor an excuse to whine about that.

Can you please remove this, thank you.

Ubcule (talk) 22:19, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers, Ubcule (talk) 22:25, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Ubcule:  Done, sorry for the confusion, though I don't appreciate snarky remarks like this. Uploading a file with incorrect licensing and then having it tagged shouldn't be a surprise; it doesn't make sense to do so, and it doesn't make the lives of new file patrollers easier. We get dozens of copyvios like this uploaded daily.
In the future, instead of uploading a file with incorrect licensing and then fixing it afterwards, I recommend preparing the information template and fair use rationale beforehand, and then uploading it through Special:Upload - this avoids the annoying hoops that you and I both hate. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 22:32, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting, thanks for pointing that out. I must admit that despite having been on Wikipedia for some time I wasn't aware of that (most file uploads I make are to Commons, I only occasionally upload "fair uses" here); or more likely, I'd forgotten where it was, searched for it, and assumed the Wizard was its replacement.  :-/ All the best, Ubcule (talk) 23:26, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sure - you can actually see the list of all alternative upload methods at the bottom of the upload wizard. Cheers, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 23:28, 24 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Enderugby - first things first, I'm not a representative of Wikipedia or anything. I'm an individual editor, just like you. As for the deletion your userpage, I'm not the one that reviewed and tagged it. Regardless, the tagging was correct; please refer to the talk messages left on your talk page, and read up on the relevant policies. Once you've done that, feel free to ask any specific questions. i'm Owner of my organisation and want to add my article and i have right to write article on my organisation — Preceding unsigned comment added by Flameshaxor (talkcontribs) 03:56, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Flameshaxor - seeing that the content came from the subject's official website, we cannot accept it as it is not knowingly released under a free license compatible with Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Copyright violations for more information. If you do own the content you are posting, you would need to explicitly release the content under a free license and show proof (either on the website, or through our OTRS process) However, the content you copied wouldn't be acceptable for Wikipedia anyway. It isn't appropriately worded for an encyclopedia, and is promotional.
In addition, subjects need to be notable to have an article. This means coverage in a variety of independent and reliable sources. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Thanks. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 05:25, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
